I feel like you're a celebrity I need to meet ASAP! You're kind of a rockstar to me
I will DM, thanks for the invite.
Alright! Let's get this party going! We'll be discussing the balance between direct and indirect instruction tonight
Good evening everyone. Christian. Inst Tech Coach in Atl. Still trying to make it home.
Drive safe and glad you could join us!
Heather here!! Ready to chat with !
Hi guys! Emily Davis, METI @ Dolvin!
Happy to have you here, Heather!
I'm not. Lol. Waiting at Marietta Diner. Trying to pick up dinner
Hey, Emily! I've been seeing some pretty great things on Twitter about y'all :)
Hello this is Hannah Rome - CCES Kindergarten teacher!
A1: I see direct instruction as some of those times when a teacher is personally not guiding all students at once
A1 It's that learning that takes place when the teacher steps back a few steps from the students and allows learning to evolve
What would be some examples of those moments?
a1: constructivism. Allowing Ss to construct their own meaning of learning
I'm totally flattered. To what do I owe that honor! Lol.
- I like that, Christian!
Hey all! Megan Endicott, music teacher, here!!! Ready to party!
A1 The first that that comes to mind with indirect instruction is when students learn from each other.
- Yay! No chorus concert!!
too many times we focus on direct instead of letting students develop and struggle.
A1 Today students were looking at form. assess. results and realized they needed that T to reteach the information.
I love that! Great image of the student to student relationship without direct teacher contact
don't worry my kid is still singing nonstop
- Very true! Teachers struggle with student struggle time!
Nope!!! Just viewing chorus audition videos via submission! LOVIN' technology!
It's clear we have a good idea of the difference between direct and indirect, so...
Providing resources and letting kids make the meaning
Are you viewing through Participate Learning?
Ok guys I'm going to be MIA for a moment. About to start driving
A2: I'm not sure about a percentage, but it should only be a piece of the pie instead of the majority of one!
And then I wonder how much of that piece can be individual direct instruction, sm group, and how much whole group!?
I agree with . It's about using varied strategies to
A2: I like the workshop model idea of quick 10-15 minute mini-lessons.
A2: I like have a "group meeting" / direct instruction 4 sure at the beg. & ending of my 45 min class 2 check 4 understanding.
- I don't know....I guess the variance depends on the Ss and their needs/interests/etc.
Ah I like the "group meeting" label!
It's important when I only see them 45 minutes once a week. Varied strategy for sure is the name of the game.
Direct instruction to get the show started (and sometimes back on track 😉) then let them work!
A2: Maybe it's not how much time is DI but how much time shouldn't be DI?
A3: Too much of one or the other may cause Ss to miss essential information and experience.
In the better late than never dept, Kathleen from Hillside checking in.
A3: I think the balance provides Ss a chance to "work it out" w/o being "told" the process / guided. Become problem solvers.
The results you get should help you figure out the right balance. As you figure things out it is normal to have to tweak things
A3-The balance affects student engagement and in turn affects a teacher's ability to accurately determine students' knowledge.
A3: also provides different learners with varied strategies
A3: It creates "Partners on the Path" to learning not leaders and followers.
Problem solving is so important to young learners! I like the idea of 'working it out'!
A3 striking the balance depends on what's being taught, who the Ss are
So true! How does finding the right balance for your students help their learning?
https://t.co/gvZNQRhkSY
Q3: this balance allows students to show what they can do while having the skills and support from the teacher
A4-Flipped and blended learning would be a good way to merge the two.
A4: Small group rotations, tech integrated content to guide or facilitate then send off to tasks or PBL.
a3: it gives Ss the opportunity w the instruction they need. Allows misconceptions to be addressed & ah ha moments
a4: THIS IS WHERE PERSONALIZED LEARNING TAKES PLACE
A4 Blended learning, especially the station rotation model. Allows for direct instruction in small group w/ ID @ other stations
A4: I'm a HUGE fan of on HW mode so Ts can have just-in-time direct scenarios 1 on 1 AND other Ss their own pace
a4: find a balance btwn the too. For me my inquiry days of use to be M and W. No WS Wed at my school and Manipulative Mon
- I got distracted and then my eyes saw ! You know I love me some Nearpod! :)
A4 just made videos for parent univ we did one was all about learning stations.
haha. I LOVE no WS Wednesday!!
curious to see how MS Ts handle station rotation. Wonder if it looks like ES
https://t.co/3LK3vRUPcJ
I use that quite often. A loud classroom often means Ss need a second to "work it out" verbally w/ a knowledgeable other.
We do stations often in MS. I've taught/led K-12 and seen them at all levels... different in management, tho
You're in good company! Don't we all love
A5: Ahh, classroom management. A tricky game for many to master!
A5: Ts will need to learn to manage a louder classroom thru signals. This blend will require collaboration which = amplitude.
a5 a lot of upfront work but worth it. Also less behavior problems
You bring up the best point!!! Is there less to manage if the students are engaged?!?!?! I think not!
A5 once Ss get in the routine of stations, classroom management works well. Ts need to set expectations, have meaningful work
Ss engagement = decrease in behavior problems! https://t.co/GyjFri5IFw
a5 a lot of upfront work but worth it. Also less behavior problems
A5-Management is essential! Practice routines, share expectations, include S input and giving S time to explore will help!
Great S relationships+ engaged learners= S success https://t.co/KCEdewzWTW
You bring up the best point!!! Is there less to manage if the students are engaged?!?!?! I think not!
I like to link nearpods into my Ss tabs for lessons!
Which again leads us nicely into...
A6: I LOVE using to include direct instruction thru video w/ live embedded links for tasks / assessments etc.
A6-I use QR codes! To record directions, lessons and links to student creations.
a6: LearnZillion; MobyMax; I love NCTM materials and the frameworks for math; Pinterest; Twitter; Vanguard; Voxer
A6: and now i'm excited to give a try! (thanks )
A6 I've seen Ts use edmodo really well! is a real pro!
A6: can't forget ! We also have students on
Alright... let's try to round this one out!
love ClassDojo for that reason as well. https://t.co/eTrFlhPViC
A5: Ahh, classroom management. A tricky game for many to master!
... this is what is all about!
A7: Failure doesn't exist... Failure = Growth. Try, try, and try again! The gradual release method is great starting place!
A7 remember that advance planning is key!
A7-Reach out! Teachers learn best from each other
That would be a good Q for experienced Ts who are used to being the facilitator / heavy on direct! https://t.co/Wt9iZ8aUAB
A7: Failure doesn't exist... Failure = Growth. Try, try, and try again! The gradual release method is great starting place!
A7: Sometimes it takes years to "get it right." And even then it's not perfect!
KEY! Will never be perfect! https://t.co/btAWGQet1D
A7: Sometimes it takes years to "get it right." And even then it's not perfect!
is so important in this arena
A7 Admin needs to let Ts try new things so they aren't afraid to fail.
Such great advice from the crew! Thanks everyone for indulging me as I led my very first Twitter chat!
