I’ve really enjoyed #fromstrivingtothriving and the daily check-ins & posts with #BookCampPD Such an inspiring and research filled book that gets to the heart of reading with kids 📚❤️
Good morning #BookCampPD I’m Phil, 6th grade teacher from NJ. My favorite part of reading is being able to explore new places, go on an adventure, meet new people, and learn new ideas.
A1. We created "book nooks" in corners all over the building that previously stored long forgotten items. We wanted them to know how very much we valued them as leader readers. #BookCampPD
Q1: From Striving to Thriving" encourages educators to take action and create a classroom of confident and capable readers. What are ways you have encouraged students to become confident readers in your classrooms? #BookCampPD
Q1: From Striving to Thriving" encourages educators to take action and create a classroom of confident and capable readers. What are ways you have encouraged students to become confident readers in your classrooms? #BookCampPD
A1: Reading menus or smaller pieces of text (only way to work in math!) and having struggling kids reread after a partner to build confidence. #BookCampPD

A1: Having a balanced library is a great way to encourage Ss to become confident readers.
FYI a balanced library MUST have PLENTY of diverse/authentic books that represent ALL children
#bookcampPD
A1: I strive to make real world connections to what we are reading! Something hands on! Here are items from the historical society to make nonfiction reading tangible for students #bookcamppd
A1: plenty of CHOICE...getting to know my readers in authentic ways through whole class read alouds (sacred time in our room!), shared reading, strategy groups & conferring...I model my own excitement and talk about the “reading zone” as a place they want to go! #BookCampPD
A1: I encourage them to read whatever they want, create a reading goal for the year, and made a book recommendation area for them to recommend to others. #BookCampPD
I LOVE this!! having realia is definitely very helpful for students learning English. Making text connections with real objects its imperative! Kudos to you, BreAnn #bookcampPD
A2. The graphic below shares three ways an educator can model curiosity. By encouraging these things students will increase their wondering and exploration of new ideas. #BookCampPD

I wonder what some of their favorites were? I use to love listening to students continue talking about the read - aloud in the lunch line as they were so excited! #BookCampPD
A2 I want my students to notice the world around them and to ask questions. At first it can be intimidating but questions are great to start off with. There’s so much out there. #BookCampPD
A2: Curiosity leads students to new ideas and new interests. I remember reading HP while I was in 3rd grade and that made me curious to read the next book and other books like it. #BookCampPD
A2: THIS is why it’s important to encourage curiosity. Ss need to see beyond what’s available and understand that our world is diverse and beautiful! #bookcamppd

A3. By sharing with students how reading increases their base of knowledge so as they move forward they are "using their own minds ... someone else is not doing it for them." #BookCampPD
A2: THIS is why it’s important to encourage curiosity. Ss need to see beyond what’s available and understand that our world is diverse and beautiful! #bookcamppd
A2: Students need to be curious to become life long learners, thinkers, readers, and leaders. When they are curious and think about their reading you can teach them to think about their thinking!! #bookcamppd
Question 3: Striving readers can recognize the power of their own thinking. How can educators help students understand that reading is a meaningful act and it will make a difference in their lives? #BookCampPD
Thanks Meredith! I'm excited to leave ALL these books behind for the new ESL teacher taking over my classroom!
I must begin to build my library at the HS!! #bookcamppd
A2: Curiosity and wonder evoke lifelong learning...kids come with it naturally...tapping into this natural strength & setting aside intentional time to explore their curiosities communicates its importance to learners #BookCampPD
Reminds me of sitting at a party beside two people. One reads all of the time and the other hasn't cracked open a book since HS. Quite the difference in conversations! #BookCampPD
Question 3: Striving readers can recognize the power of their own thinking. How can educators help students understand that reading is a meaningful act and it will make a difference in their lives? #BookCampPD
A3: Students need to learn and understand that we read with a purpose! Whether we read fiction or non-fiction, Ss need support to read these genres. #bookcampPD
I wrote a blog post about this with several resources: https://t.co/v7nCR91Sc5
A3 Reading changes how we get to point A and then B. It provides a story and captures the minds and hearts of so many. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to expand our mind. #BookCampPD

Totally agree and I am not an EL. I took me a third of the book to start understanding and I kept having to go back to put it in context. Great reflection in your blog post!! #bookcamppd
A4. Teaching with images, videos, graphics and artifacts is one of the most effective strategies I have used. I still use it daily on Twitter! #BookCampPD
A3: I’ll be trying out the “textual lineage” lesson #fromstrivingtothriving with my Ss in the fall...I love the idea of presenting them with a timeline of books that have made an impact & difference in my life...I enjoyed reading @Stephharvey49 sample #bookcamppd
right?!?!? I am so glad to hear its not just me!! haha! Thanks for letting me know! It's definitely beautifully written but it takes a little work to get into it #bookcamppd
Last question: Q4: What are ways educators can promote striving readers while promoting instructional strategies? Share what has worked with your students and/or a strategy you like best. #BookCampPD
A3: Connecting students to content that is meaningful in their lives. These students are using reading to find answers to their own questions. #BookCampPd

A3: I’m also a H U G E believer in the power of reading aloud for J O Y...everyday I read aloud at least twice...once w instructional purpose...once for the pure thrill of it...I find this is one of the best ways to engage striving readers in meaningful conversation #bookcamppd
That half hour sure flew by in a blink! Please know how much you are appreciated in spending time sharing your thoughts and passion for children with others. You are appreciated!!
Please thank @Hahne_Elyse for leading the chat as our guest moderator. Marvelous job!! #BookCampPD
A3: I absolutely ❤️ this visual from @BurkinsandYaris. While we chose read alouds for many purposes, we sought out books that taught empathy or made Ss want to take action. #BookCampPD#WDTW
A4: I have used pictures or images along side reading. I have used and loved a routine called See-Think-Wonder. It aids with inferencing, using evidence, activating prior knowledge, and so many others. #BookCampPD
A4 My students are visual and need a lot of support. Thinking maps as well as visuals during stories and for recall are huge. I love seeing them successful! #BookCampPD
Jot down a note to jump into #BookCampPD again next Saturday morning when @Stephharvey49 and @AnnieTWard authors of "From Striving to Thriving" will be joining us. Hope to see you then and please invite your friends - caring is sharing!
A4: One way we can support striving readers is by students writing their own stories and sharing with one another.
Ss LOVE reading about each other. They love reading experiences they can relate with.

A4: I had this idea to use these blank journals from @Target dollar spot to create the Wonder Journals from the book! #fromstrivingtothriving . Connecting to what we read through drawing, questioning, writing, (or twittering) can help us make connections! #BookCampPd
