Q1: Let's start up front with the interior DL - what are we looking for as far as skill sets/body types. Feel free to respond with the scheme you are playing in. #swarmfbchat

A1: I’m currently not playing in any scheme. But if your DL are 300lbs, have them two gapping and occupying OL’s. If they’re 185 lbs, slant and move. #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:04 PM EDT
Q1: Let's start up front with the interior DL - what are we looking for as far as skill sets/body types. Feel free to respond with the scheme you are playing in. #swarmfbchat
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1: I really like good feet and long arms to be honest - weight isn't as big of a factor when selecting DL regardless of front. We have always 1-gapped; quick twitch is good as well. #swarmfbchat
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 3 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1: We are on odd front, so if we can find a 2-Gap NG it makes life easier. We've had big, and we've had smaller but uber athletic and strong. Both work. Awesome when they are all three!!! #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • coachwithgloves Apr 3 @ 9:06 PM EDT
#swarmfbchat A1: I would always try my best to have a 2-gap Nose.
  • teshda Apr 3 @ 9:06 PM EDT
Big and fast! I like to move my interior dlinemen a lot. We will run stunts with them. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachWilliams22 Apr 3 @ 9:06 PM EDT
a1: MOTOR. Everything else can vary. Obviously length, size and athleticism are a plus. Able to get to the QB. #swarmfbchat
  • CODY_GARDNER Apr 3 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A1) Nose - Jet player(TGOG) no size just has to be a high motor guy, can be on the undisciplined side. T must have the best overall skill set -Deuce player(TGOG) size is nice needs to be steady. #swarmfbchat
  • ThompsonDub Apr 3 @ 9:07 PM EDT
Hands on gap players. Will fit in biggest physical at tackle, quicker guy at nose, pass rusher at end and best at doing it all at anchor. No jetting up the field, squeeze and spill. Nothing worse than getting trapped all night, not happening #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:04 PM EDT
Q1: Let's start up front with the interior DL - what are we looking for as far as skill sets/body types. Feel free to respond with the scheme you are playing in. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachSCDub Apr 3 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1 2 Mindsets, Either a plugger (aka big boy) that requires a Dbl team. Or a shooter (Wrestling type kid) who is an interior pass rusher and should try and win with speed. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • freezysmalls Apr 3 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1 need someone with a sense of urgency and has a great motor, ive learned at a HS level that there are plenty of look like Tarzan and play like janes out there, but those with a good get off and active hands are those who win the most. 3-4 scheme #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:04 PM EDT
Q1: Let's start up front with the interior DL - what are we looking for as far as skill sets/body types. Feel free to respond with the scheme you are playing in. #swarmfbchat
  • Joebruneel Apr 3 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1: For a 3-4, I need a big strong kid to play Zero Nose, because he will two gap most of the time. For my two four techs, I like guys who weren't good enough/quick enough to start at OLB. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • JerryGordonFB Apr 3 @ 9:08 PM EDT
A1 We just want guys that go hard...relentless..we will adjust the defense to match the body types..#swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • jhackett14 Apr 3 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A1: I want selfless team first guys. I have had the big guys who can't move and hated it. I like for mine to be around 200 and run and do what I ask of them #swarmfbchat
  • JerryGordonFB Apr 3 @ 9:09 PM EDT
Jerry Gordon Broad Run Hs Ashburn Va #swarmfbchat
  • coachwithgloves Apr 3 @ 9:09 PM EDT
#swarmfbchat Specificially, things that I try to stress are LEVERAGE and AGGRESSION/TENACITY. QUICKNESS in a short space is also pretty good.
  • coachsmitty_43 Apr 3 @ 9:09 PM EDT
A1: Two unselfish kids that play with aggressive technique first and foremost...after that, size is great and length is a bonus #swarmfbchat
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:10 PM EDT
Q2: How about those DE - do you look for separate skills for a Strong End vs Rush End? #swarmfbchat
  • coachdboucher Apr 3 @ 9:11 PM EDT
We play a 425, we want quick agressive/tough kids, who will play with leverage. Let me say for everyone of these, weight/height/measueables don't matter to us, relentless pursuit and an attitude of "we are going to get it done." Those things are the "it" we need. #swarmfbchat
  • mikestauffer Apr 3 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Mike Stauffer, Arrowhead Christian, SoCal #swarmfbchat
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2: Even front, different skills - like high IQ and arm length for Strong End; like quickness and toughness for Rush End. IMO, can't forget to coach up taking on pullers even for a rush end! #swarmfbchat
  • Joebruneel Apr 3 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2: For a 3-4, of the OLB's, one should be a good zone dropper, one should be a good rusher. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • freezysmalls Apr 3 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A2 need a guy with great awareness, knows how the blocks develop and knows when he gets a down blk then he knows something is coming around and not getting upfield too fast. Square shoulders #swarmfbchat
  • teshda Apr 3 @ 9:13 PM EDT
Strong end needs to be able to play a 7 technique and control c gap, rush end needs to be long and fast and be able to get to the qb and squeeze down blocks. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • mikestauffer Apr 3 @ 9:13 PM EDT
    A1: Speed kills!!! #swarmfbchat
  • jhackett14 Apr 3 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A2: DE to field I want more of a typical DE body. Viper is a hybrid OLB/DE gotta be gritty/smart/tough as hell. I want both my to get hands on squeeze the air out and hit the kick out in the mouth #swarmfbchat
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 3 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A2: Our DE's are usually very similar kids, but we try to have our stonger one to the TE side to help defeat that dbl team and quicker one on the open end side. But we teach both same techniques and prefer twins. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • JRGrayson Apr 3 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A2: these are not technical terms but my rush end needs to have some wiggle in those hips. Longer and slender. I want the strong end to be a little bit more of a bully. Barrel chested. King of a thug. #swarmfbchat
  • JerryGordonFB Apr 3 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A2 My strong end is usually bigger (prefer a 220 lb wrestler) than my Rush end. the Rush end is usually more athletic and can drop into zone coverage #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:13 PM EDT
Q2A - If you utilize OLBers instead of DE....what are you looking for? More variety if they drop in coverage? #swarmfbchat
  • coachsmitty_43 Apr 3 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A2: we play a field DE and boundary DE...bigger, more physical kid is to the field and smaller/quicker more LB type kid is to the boundary so we can drop him to become the boundary LB and get into an okie front with ease #swarmfbchat
  • CoachWilliams22 Apr 3 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2: strong end is a ‘true’ end. Hands, squeeze, spill, ru. Stuffer. Rush end is an LB/Athlete that can play down or up. Quick twitch. #swarmfbchat
  • mikestauffer Apr 3 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2: Interchangable. Maybe weak side or boundary dude the better speed rusher #swarmfbchat
  • ThompsonDub Apr 3 @ 9:15 PM EDT
Yes. Like to have each guy offering something different to strong/weak side. We trade our ends, strength is determined by run strength not field, so it is important. #swarmfbchat
  • Joebruneel Apr 3 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2 Cont.: I emphasize to my guys that they are Outside Linebackers, not Defensive ends, because I want to emphasize to them that they should be a complete player that can rush, drop, set the edge. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • coachdboucher Apr 3 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2: not really, we are switching what we are doing a little bit to better address some league schools, so the 2 positions for us are really the same. Work block recognition everyday and get after the ball. #swarmfbchat
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:16 PM EDT
Q3: Now those ILBers - what are we looking for - again, be specific to your schemes - let us know what you are looking for based on what you play. #swarmfbchat
  • jhackett14 Apr 3 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2a: we base out of 425 but I like the viper to be more OLB type who is tough/ smart and can drop. Like switch fronts to keep OC guessing #swarmfbchat
  • freezysmalls Apr 3 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A2a I like those “to big for safety” type of guys here.... maybe even those safeties that are very physical and who I know can take on a puller... counter is a force to be reckoned with and having good stand ur ground OLBs are great to have #swarmfbchat
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 3 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A2: We really try and keep our field and boundary players interchangeable as well, so it is easier for us to adapt to shifts, motions, and injury substitutions. #swarmfbchat
  • teshda Apr 3 @ 9:18 PM EDT
We look for kids who can run sideline to sideline and high football IQ kids because they have to be able to make adjustments. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A3: Gotta have toughness, instincts, great vision, and football IQ. Great vision (key OL) can make up for a lack of movement. Gotta bring it downhill as well. Do NOT like tall ILBers either. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachWilliams22 Apr 3 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A3: Sam/Star is a hybrid Safety. Long, smart, space player. Mike is tough, smart, physical and has a nose for the ball. Will is athletic, explosive and good in pass rush. #swarmfbchat #MultipleFront
  • jhackett14 Apr 3 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A3: I have short stocky and long lean. Doesn't matter as long as they are aggressive play downhill vs run and can get sideline to sideline and bring the funk when they get their #swarmfbchat
  • Joebruneel Apr 3 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A3: For a 3-4, I like ILB's who can run sideline to sideline and pursues the ball at a proper angle. I don't need big thumpers, I can adjust the front if I don't feel comfortable with one of them taking on a guard. Also, obviously smart. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • mikestauffer Apr 3 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A3: Aggressive, downhill fitters, unblockable. Again, speed kills. #swarmfbchat
  • coachdboucher Apr 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A3: ball hawk, sideline to sideline go get the ball. We want our ILBs to be free players, we see the read and go. Need to be a communicator to get the DL lined up, and they hopefully will recognize scouting reports and be loud about what they know is coming. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachSlade_Cal Apr 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A2: no. In high school we have who we have, plus if you have a real dominant guy, people shift the te or back to run away from him or chip him. I would be more likely to play a field end and a boundary end. That way my more dominant guy is always to the wide side. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • JRGrayson Apr 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A3: 3-4 ILB’s have to be like the DE I described. A little more barrel chested, not afraid to take on a guard. 4-3? A little longer more athletic (B. Urlacher).. 3-5? Athletic, and can run run run! #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:16 PM EDT
Q3: Now those ILBers - what are we looking for - again, be specific to your schemes - let us know what you are looking for based on what you play. #swarmfbchat
  • freezysmalls Apr 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A3 fields generals, and who ever can get downhill NOW, gotta be able to have active hands.... don’t want guys who are gonna “take the charge”. Want guys who are gonna get their face in there and scrape over top #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:16 PM EDT
Q3: Now those ILBers - what are we looking for - again, be specific to your schemes - let us know what you are looking for based on what you play. #swarmfbchat
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 3 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A3: Our ILB should be our best football players. Toughest guys that are the best tacklers. Whoever those guys are...we will adapt to their size and speed and intelligence. However, we would like them to have some lbs on them. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Q4: I'm very interested in this - what do you look for in a FS? This is a position where I hear the most variations in skill sets. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachSlade_Cal Apr 3 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3: everybody has great answers, I concur. #swarmfbchat
  • JerryGordonFB Apr 3 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3 We are an under front team..generally my Mac (1,5 side) is bigger a little less athletic than our will (3,5 side mostly boundary). Our will is usually a little less experienced but is asked to cover more than the Mac #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A4: Personally, I always like a taller FS with long strides vs straight speed. High IQ is a must here. I'm not big on him having to be a huge tackler either - I know others rely on him to make hits in their schemes. #swarmfbchat
  • JRGrayson Apr 3 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3 cont: regardless of scheme, every good defense has an alpha at ILB. He needs to be your leader. Not necessarily a meat head pounding his chest, but it’s his huddle. He is an extension of you out there! #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:16 PM EDT
Q3: Now those ILBers - what are we looking for - again, be specific to your schemes - let us know what you are looking for based on what you play. #swarmfbchat
  • Joebruneel Apr 3 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A4: My most instinctual player. Shouldn't have to be coached up a lot. Just put him back there and leave him be. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • coachsmitty_43 Apr 3 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A3: 4-2-5...looking for the Mike to be the bigger of the two and an extremely aggressive kid that can defeat blocks...Will is more help in coverage but is expected to be just as aggressive and run to the ball #swarmfbchat
  • freezysmalls Apr 3 @ 9:25 PM EDT
I think someone who can just be in the right position at the right time, someone always around the football. I think this quality makes them fast and a “ball hawk” #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Q4: I'm very interested in this - what do you look for in a FS? This is a position where I hear the most variations in skill sets. #swarmfbchat
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 3 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A4: We are a Cover 2 team predominately, so both S are FS. So I'm looking for speed and guys that can read. My corners press, so those are my thumper DB's, and my S are my speed guys. Who has speed and can play downhill to the ball. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • teshda Apr 3 @ 9:26 PM EDT
Fs is the quarterback of the secondary super important in making coverage checks... he also needs to be able to activate when he reads run. Long and ranging kid. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • mikestauffer Apr 3 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A4: Smart, recognizes formation fast and communicates coverages and checks. Cover/ball skills. In C3 will run the alley full throttle. Very good tackler. #swarmfbchat
  • jhackett14 Apr 3 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A4: I want someone not afraid to run the alley and hit been looking for that guy for aboit 2 years now. Also has to be smart and make coverage call for his side #swarmfbchat
  • CoachFonville Apr 3 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A3: 4-2 Sam is the man, best football player and the one the offense should run from. Mike is a bit quicker to close backside holes and can run outside. Size is variable but I like the sam to be a bit bigger. Both of mine this year were 200+ #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • coachjsam Apr 3 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A2: long, athletes that can run and are physical #swarmfbchat
  • CoachSCDub Apr 3 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A2 In 4 Down front, Speed guys. In 3 Down front, bigger stronger gap control guys. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 3 @ 9:29 PM EDT
We run a 3-3-4 with a Rover. We move the rover around before the offense declares formation - F/B/S/W. Never been "caught". We try to be balanced across the field. We just try and put the quicker guys to the wide side to cover more space. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @freezysmalls
  • coachdboucher Apr 3 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A4: versatility is crucial, because we want our ILbs to be free flowing aggressive types, FS has to be able FWN and make them right. But they also have to flip and get deep. Intelligence to presnap read is huge, top end speed with physicality. #swarmfbchat
  • MTCoachBerry Apr 3 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Also, through scouting, we may change strength call from Wide side, to a true strength, or to RB side for that week. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @freezysmalls
  • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Keep replying - 30 minutes sure goes by quickly - I'll be looking forward to re-reading these in the morning and comparing notes! Great to see you all again - let's get our numbers back up there for next week! #swarmfbchat
  • CoachFonville Apr 3 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A4: 4-2 my fs is a sure tackler and the shot caller of the secondary. Has to be able to be a jack of all trades. I like him to be an ally runner and be able to cover but if he is better in one area over the other then we will work around it. Has to be intelligent #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachSCDub Apr 3 @ 9:30 PM EDT
A3 MLB Has to be smartest/2nd smartest kid. Really athletic kid who can go sideline to sideline. Should be able to direct people and ideally recognize fronts and tendencies. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • coachsmitty_43 Apr 3 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A4: SMART. Film junkie. Can make coverage checks on the field n get us in the right coverage vs the formations we have to defend. Needs to be fast n good in coverage as well. Lastly, he needs to be reliable with his fit in the run game, doesn’t have to kill people #swarmfbchat
  • JRGrayson Apr 3 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A4: 1 of the best I’ve coached wasn’t overly skilled. Wouldn’t blow you away at the combine. Had that Nose for the ball and was mean, commanded respect in the middle. Unbelievable ability to play center field. Patient but then aggressive. And incredible tackler. #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Q4: I'm very interested in this - what do you look for in a FS? This is a position where I hear the most variations in skill sets. #swarmfbchat
  • coachjsam Apr 3 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A3: bigger athlete that can process information quickly. Physical kid #swarmfbchat
  • JRGrayson Apr 3 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A4 cont: your defense is built up the middle. FS, ILB, NT! #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Apr 3 @ 9:23 PM EDT
Q4: I'm very interested in this - what do you look for in a FS? This is a position where I hear the most variations in skill sets. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachFonville Apr 3 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A2: Depends on what I got. If they are bigger and slower then will use to spill and read. If fast then they are go go go. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachWilliams22 Apr 3 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A4: Smartest DB. Must be able to communicate. Has to be a team guy and it must be important to him. Intangibles are the most important for us in this spot. Obviously speed and length are awesome, but not make or break in our scheme. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachFonville Apr 3 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A1: if big they need to be strong and take on double teams. Won't ask them to chase but will ask to take up the lane and get to heal line. If smaller I want penetration and force the offense to avoid them. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachSCDub Apr 3 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A4 Either the most athletic or 2nd most athletic kid. Smartest/2nd smartest kid. He directs the DB's. Usually use him as Cov 1 floater, or use him to bracket a stud. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • Coach__French Apr 3 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A1: lots of guys have "ideal" images for what interior defensive line guys should be..... personally I just need two dogs. Take your measurables and throw an out the window. Two savage dudes that love to battle and we'll be in good shape. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • Coach__French Apr 3 @ 9:37 PM EDT
@rmacblue A2: Strong side defensive end needs to be able to battle TE and tackles. I like my weakside defensive end to be my high motor renegade type player. #swarmfbchat
  • freezysmalls Apr 3 @ 9:44 PM EDT
Ha! Toughest things ever! There are plenty of coaches in the #swarmfbchat that are willing to share info!!! I learned a lot from participating last year when installing, plus trial and error. Adjusting to motion was the toughest

#swarmfbchat A1:Nose: short squatty guy that can fire off the ball and make the oline have to double team. Ends: long arm guys that can get their hands on the tackle quick so they have control Interior tackle i want a powerlifter that can man handle whoever is in front of him
  • CAM387 Apr 3 @ 9:52 PM EDT
#swarmfbchat A2: I want guys that can play strong and weak side. I'm not a jug fan of flipping my guys.
  • CAM387 Apr 3 @ 9:54 PM EDT
#swarmfbchat A3: ILB i like to use those kids that are little to slow to play safety. Kids that will read and then react. I want a free safety mentality that is not afraid to run downhill and hit.
  • CAM387 Apr 3 @ 9:58 PM EDT
#swarmfbchat A4: Need a kid that is cerebral. He is the guy that can make or break a game. He has to be a corner that isn't afraid to smoke someone downfield.
