Hello everyone my name is Cliandonica. I am an undergraduate at Stockton University, inspiring to be a Special Education teacher. My favorite way to exercise is free weight exercise and running. #globaledchat
Hello everyone! My name is Samantha and I am a UTeach student at The University of Texas at Tyler. I am studying education with a specialty in math 4-8. My go to exercise is walking with my dogs. #globaledchat
Hello! Gretchen from California. I have some gym buddies who are also teachers. We vary our workouts and do classes together including LesMills Body Pump or Spin and sometimes water aerobics. #globaledchat@VillaSportClub
A1) I believe there could be success using exercise or movement in the classroom. Exercise in the classroom is so important because students, especially younger students, need to move around occasionally. You can’t expect children to pay close attention #globaledchat
A1 We have 85 minute blocks two days per week, and that’s a lot of sitting. I ask students to get up and move around after 30-45 minutes. With the antsy students, I ask them if they would prefer to stand rather than sit. #globaledchat
Hi everyone! My name is Sarah and I am an undergrad studying Speech Pathology with a minor in Mild to Moderate Special Education at Kent State University. My favorite way to exercise is the stair climber and Pound! #globaledchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A1: It's great for "getting the wiggles out" as my son's kindergarten teacher used to say. He had them doing the chicken dance at least once a week - I'm not sure I could handle that though! #globaledchat
A1: Exercise is important in the classroom because it promotes brain activity. Also it helps the students form good exercise habits. #globaledchat#sp19edfb4338
A1: I think that it is important for students to be able to move in the classroom. You cannot expect them to sit in their desks for prolonged periods of time without zoning out, especially the younger students. #GlobalEdChat
A1: Got this from @JustStandNews and @Ergotron. Vital that we understand that sedentary behavior is a serious problem. Our student’s brains and bodies will benefit from exercise. #GlobalEdchat
Oh my goodness, dancing is one of the best ways to exercise! It's entertaining and fun to do. I remember in pre-school my class would dance to the YMCA, Head Shoulders, Knees, and Toes and a lot more! #globaledchat
A1) I think that there could be a great amount of success by incorporating exercise in the classroom. Especially for younger children with longer class period blocks (90 mins at times). It is a great way for students to take a break. #globaledchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
As a teacher, I love looking around my classroom and seeing my kids productively working however they are comfortable-lying on the floor, sitting under a table, etc. As long as I can see them and they are safe, we are good! #Globaledchat
A1: I think its important because it keeps the kids active and a good way to get their "antsy" ways out so they can pay more attention to lessons. All my experiences with exercise in the classrooms have been great! #globaledchat
A2)There are barriers that could occur in the classroom. Two that came to mind is the cardiovascular health or respiratory disability of the student.A student who has moderate-severe asthma may not be able to participate in activities. Also a child who is overweight #globaledchat
due to various circumstances, may not be able to endure a certain exercise which would unfortunately prevent him from participating (having a hypothyroid condition could cause this). #globaledchat
A2 Let the students choose what they want to do within reason. You can create exercise stations of student choice. Take a 5 minute break and move. Just moving and not sitting is better than nothing. #globaledchat
A1: Incorporating exercise & movement in education is important & helpful for all learners. Students & teachers need active participation. There are multiple modalities of learning educators have to address. #GlobalEdChat
A2) I think that time is a barrier for a lot of teachers or they may worry that it will difficult to get students back on track following exercise breaks. Also, they may not want some students with physical disabilities to feel left out. #globaledchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A1. I believe it is super important to promote exercise in the classroom, in my experience in the classroom I have encouraged students to get up out of their seats and move around if they need to, as long as they are not distracting other students. #globaledchat
A2 Barriers can be time related as well as students who have physical challenges. Let students choose what they want to do. 5 minutes of time exercising might make more productive students during the rest of the class time. #globaledchat
A2. Sometimes it can be difficult to include exercise in the classroom, especially in higher grades because of the limited amount of time. That being said maybe our curriculums should include some type of way, to include more exercise in the classroom. #globaledchat
A3) Of course! Goal number 3 is all about living a healthy lifestyle and maintaining well-being to all. Teaching students how to use bodyweight exercises is a great starting point because it teaches them that being active is actually very accessible. #globaledchat#GEN2108
A3: A couple things that can be fun and engaging. Tie a project to exercise or work with another teacher or subject matter and connect it to exercise. Ex: how does exercise help with blood flow to the heart? Science, math, pe, even art! #globaledchat
A3: The first one that comes to mind is walking for water (https://t.co/0amy46rtwk) or the simulation where students carry water to experience what some families have to do to get water on a daily basis. #globaledchat
A2: There are a variety of factors. I’ve heard - too much content, concern over instructional minutes, challenge of gathering attention again, ... The time invested in classroom structures for physical activity help in the long run. #globaledchat
A3: Yes, these goals could be easily incorporated as goal 3 is all about good health and well-being! Teaching kids small exercises in class gives them ideas they can take back home with them and start developing a healthy lifestyle early! #globaledchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A3: The first one that comes to mind is walking for water (https://t.co/0amy46rtwk) or the simulation where students carry water to experience what some families have to do to get water on a daily basis. #globaledchat
Embed functional fitness training and PBL into CAS projects or making PE more relevant for lifelong wellness. Not everything about varsity sports. (And I like sports... coached for many years)
A3: Goal three is all about healthy living, so teachers could come up with a fun activity that involves movement while teaching students about the UN sustainable goal. #GlobalEdChat
A3. I believe by encouraging exercise in the classroom will promote knowledge about the sustainable goals. in order to go for runs, go hiking, surfing or so now we need the outdoors. If the outdoors are unsustainable our well being will be effected. #globaledchat
A3: We're talking mostly about gross motor, but fine motor activities such as knitting, sewing, crochet can be done during read-a-loud to satisfy the need for movement and create products for #teachSDGs markets #globaledchat
I completely agree with you, Goal 3, as well as all the other goals, are very important to the sustainable goals, teaching about being active and moving will fact help out the goals and make us that much closer to reaching them. #globaledchat
I have had success using movement in the classroom. During transitions from math to reading, I've had the kids do jumping jacks and stretch. They enjoy doing it and it helps them get ready for circle time. #globaledchat
There could be some possibilities of using exercise in the classroom with children with a disability. Depending on what they are dealing with, it is up to us to adjust and adapt! #globaledchat
Q4: Connecting to the #globaled community opens students to new experiences. How could we use exercise to teach students about other cultures, people, disabilities? #Globaledchat
A3: Connect exercise to a larger need for healthy lifestyles that include nutrition, mental/emotional health and provide Ss with tool that don’t require much equipment or $. #globaledchat
Linking to goal 6, students could "walk with water" or dumbbells/weights to not only exercise but to show them that this is what some kids do everyday and sometimes more than once a day. #globaledchat#sp19edfb4338
A4: Using song and dance from other cultures (not just the chicken dance!). This is a classic for foreign language classes, but could be used in others as well. #globaledchat
I had that same thought! Showing students what others have to do on a daily basis would open their eyes to the poverty of other countries. #globaledchat#sp19edfb4338
A4)The great thing about exercise is that there are no boundaries or restrictions to any race, gender or religion. Exercising is meant to be a community of uplifting and positive experiences. #globaledchat
With this in mind, different people, cultures, and people disabilities all have their own exercises that they prefer. Exercise is great because it acts as the bridge between all these groups. #globaledchat#GEN2108
A4: I think a great way to teach students about other cultures is trying to use music from different cultures as they work out in class. Then, you could go over where that country is and discuss their values with the class. #globaledchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
This is like reading my mind. W created an avenue for students and individuals to create their own videos and share them with the world on our platform. #GlobalEdChat
With this in mind, different people, cultures, and people disabilities all have their own exercises that they prefer. Exercise is great because it acts as the bridge between all these groups. #globaledchat#GEN2108
A4. There are many exercises that are prominent in other countries that we can use during these lessons. During or after the exercise the educator can inform the students where the exercise originated or how it is practiced in other areas. Ex. Yoga #globaledchat
A4: Some countries have cultural dances that are very active. Students would have fun learning them, but they would also be exercising at the same time. #globaledchat#sp19edfb4338
Great idea, for instance, if you decide to use dance as an exercise you can use music from other areas or cultures to make the students more culturally and globally aware. #GlobalEdChat
A1 exercise if important because it does not just acyivate the brain but creates neural pathways to help students grasps concpeta they are learning #globaledchat
A2 one barrier I think is that of Te mindset in the inclusion of movement in the classroom. If they understand the importance of movement it shouldn’t be a barrier #globaledchat
With the help of the internet, I managed to find multiple resources such as https://t.co/GgweG10Ilm to help teach physical education with a global perspective. #globaledchat#GEN2108
Hello #globaledchat! Dropping in a bit late. Great to see this conversation, especially the ways students are sharing dances and exercise through a global lens.
A5) With the help of the internet, I managed to find multiple resources such as https://t.co/GgweG10Ilm to help teach physical education with a global perspective. #globaledchat#GEN2108
Usually for the younger kids find some type of follow along dances online that we could play on a huge screen where they can easily see the moves and imitate them!
A5. Youtube connects most of the world and I am sure there are exercise routines from around the world or health tips that are being sued in other countries, some of them may help us and our students are while connecting with another culture, visually. #globaledchat
A4 exercise is one great way to let students understand that people from different places may practice exercise in various ways and that they can have similarities as well as differences #globaledchat
Youtube is great. We will be bringing videos from around the world together on our platform as well. The goal is to profit share with the individuals who create the videos as well. Good content and engaging exercise! #GlobalEdChat
Q6: What could administrators do to help the #GlobalEd community not only exercise more but create a culture for inclusive exercise and the breaking down of barriers? #Globaledchat
A6: Ideas: could admins provide incentives for teachers to get their classroom moving? How about intra-classroom competitions? School-wide messaging? Before, during, and after school programs for students and teachers? #GlobalEdchat
A6. Administrators should be apart of all our actions and aware of our mission to be global, by providing ample outside time, or access to health equipment, teachers will be able to teach with a global perspective. #globaledchat
I agree with this! I believe everything starts with the individual's mindset! I believe if we, as educators, can help change this and provide a positive light to the importance of exercise then inclusion will follow! #globaledchat
encourage students to exercise and classes could compete to see who got the most tallies. There were also incentives for reaching a half marathon, marathon, etc. #GlobalEdChat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A6) Administrators could make time oriented assessments that are required each year. Also, the administrators could hold friendly competitions between the teachers to see who can make the most creative and fun way to integrate inclusive exercise. #globaledchat#GEN2108
A7. As an educator, I will make sure to keep in mind the benefits of exercise and try to implement healthy lifestyles beginning with my self. Furthermore, I will make sure to include physical movement in my lesson plans, at least once or twice a week #globaledchat
A7) With my classroom, I would love to have them take walks either outside or through the building. I would do this by having components of my lesson plans set up at different locations and then we would walk as a class to each spot. #globaledchat#GEN2108
