No, I think I'm going to be the angel advocate tonight!
School devices ā ruled & restricted by network managers! Is this the norm?
Secondary educator/learner of all things educational!
Good evening Why does it feel like I'm always making and eating dinner for this. Bad time management I guess?
Great to have you with you friend!
School hols, finally I've made this one, Ken fr Sydney,
Hi multitasking at its finest tonight. Cooking, watching the news, drinking red wine and tweeting!
Great multi-tasking in my opinion Michael. What's for dinner tonight has already given me coffee!
Welcome aboard Kendall, great to have you with the team!
Hi Nor sure ill stay awake till 10!
Great to have you on deck as always! Don't get your tasks mixed up!
Hi all. Matt from Perth. Just watching the doggies play, chilling and will try and make the
leftover chicken stirfried in leftover rice. A Monday staple Plus a salad
NO worries, quality over quantity!
Roxanne from Melbourne. Tweeting and replanning because team leader has changed her mind :-I
tweet of the night already. Well done!
Ok, lets do this - I've only got til 730! Then, dumplings!
Welcome as always, you can do this!
if you hear a snoring its just me.. no offence :D
Not your greatest tweet to be honest!
Hi everyone! Greetings from
Great to have you on board, keen to have to the Northern Hemisphere POV!
Hi all, since we're talking dinner I just had chops, mash and gravy...yum!!
can be a problem if you don't have a team of teachers and support staff making the decisions.
I already like the title!
Hi Patricia here from AKL, NZ
I had chicken pasta and destroyed it in the microwave
Ha ha. True. I'm learning to just plan less and have fun with my students. It's actually a win win most of the time.
Welcome as always Patricia!
Oh well, nobody's perfect!
Are the any questions coming? .
I don't have no microwave. Crazy new technology...
Going to jump on board my first
We had bruschetta from scratch. Yummo!
Ta! Always happy to participate and learn
A1 We are 1:1 Macbook Airs from Year 3-6. Personal devices aren't welcome at school. Frankly, network wouldn't cope!
A1 BYOD but must be a laptop type device
A1 Y3-6 classes have 10 chromebooks (soon to be 15), an iPad and some desktops, BYOD is active, but 5-10 Ss/class at best
Hi lovely! How was your first day of holidays?
A1: Wanting to go BYOD, not enough support from parents
A1/ BYOD & magically use ninja like skills to only use it for learning. Dont even dare to touch your smartphone in class.
A1: Not sure about the high school, but no BYOD in Primary at the moment.
I luv Macs! We may be getting them later this year https://t.co/pKURLf0AGZ
A1 We are 1:1 Macbook Airs from Year 3-6. Personal devices aren't welcome at school. Frankly, network wouldn't cope!
A1 any welcome- but we will supply a range of different devices as well and teach 'fit for purpose' tool selection
all devices all platforms all on all the time 24/7 and available for learning - off in exams - BYOD future of Educ
A1 our school is BYOD but no phones
A1. I am going to answer with a ? What is your classroom position on what should drive learning? https://t.co/JP2GRxy2SI
A1 Our BYOD is pretty flexible, we have tablets, iPads, chromebooks and laptops - basically anything that can access GAFE
yum, I'm coming to your house for dinner
less device choice for more digital opportunity..
A1 Unfort we are well under state average in device/student ratio and not ready for 1:1 BYOD. Using laptops & handful iPads
A1: 1:1 laptop school. Each student has a Macbook Pro/Air. Student devices not 'supported'. Used to get past network issues!
A1: senior school uses chrome books, juniors i-pad
We allow student devices but in my experience Ss need guidance on how to use appropriately.
I don't understand why ppl are so against smartphones
Outstanding. I sorted and tidied. I know how to have a good time!
Driven by a software company?
Junior and prep have iPad trolleys, plus these amazing z space 3D computers
Hee hee. My PLN is welcome anytime you guys are in Melbourne!
No byod.... but roughly 80 devices/laptops incl 20 iPad
A1 I personally think that a total BYOD plan is totally unfair to teachers...
A1: By student devices I mean phones/iPad, etc. Most use to circumvent network. SM, better internet etc!
A1 - Most ban them? Seen as a distraction?
yes & no. It's kind of patchwork and depends on Ss. They don't always bring them either, which can be a pain
A1/ Most responses about hardware, not about softskills or that goes with device use
A1: iPads and MacBooks in the classes 3-6, not sure about lower grades. Guessing iPads and laptop access.
Standard first day off activities. We started back today. That was HARD!
A1: iPads Only - to minimise teachers becoming technicians and minimal software update
BYOD with no plan encourages S entitlement to use devices often to the detriment of S learning.
I think that's our problem as well. Shouldn't be a problem, though. It's 2016!
A1/ Remember pen licenses? Why dont we have licenses for when kids have the softskills to use responsibly/effectively?
.Good evening. I just had roast beef and have finished dishes so joining from Hastings NZ
Most work is through GAFE & tbh it's avail on most devices, only real barrier is smartphone screen too small
Interesting discussion on digital literacy at the moment, 4 Ts & Ss https://t.co/Q1XSstDPpf
A1: iPads Only - to minimise teachers becoming technicians and minimal software update
and these should be earned in primary school so that by secondary responsible usage is embedded.
and to students whose parents can't afford the latest device
i think they r around in some schools
Below par HP laptops for Ts, but some have own chromebooks, tablets, smartphones (1/)
A1 That's why my school loves the Chromebooks, no network issues!
we allow byo-anything. We use gafe and 365 and other web2 tools.
We are 1:1 School. 70% of our students are in the BYOD Program so we supply the rest (140/200) we=60
A2: Our school, couldn't tell you. Still working it out. I would hope that there is staff and student input somewhere there.
Would be happy to! Must look at Jocelyn's resources from last night.
mmm...could be in the future
Gr8 idea, we sort of do that w/ agreements, parents and teachers sign, but it's not digital literacy https://t.co/j9CFXpxi5a
A1/ Remember pen licenses? Why dont we have licenses for when kids have the softskills to use responsibly/effectively?
That's the key! Equity means success for all!
(2/2) Most Ps don't ask, but whatever they might use @ home, as long as 1) has a browser, 2) can access GAFE
Yes and thats why we've just stuck with iPads - its meant we can concentrate on teaching...
A2 The budget is the biggest influence for sure
A2 money allocation normally
A2 the design of the curriculum
.We have 1 to 1 ipads in middle & Snr & varies in Jnr depending on numbers sometimes 1to1 or 1 to 2.Not all wk on ipads
A2 $ and that means the people who decide where the small amount gets spent
This is a great idea, we're looking at an digital citizenship license or something similar!
from a position of teacher support person and it is a totally unfair expectation. How can they concentrate on pedagogy?
can be a tricky equity issue. Tech provides support for some ss who need it or voice typing screen reading
can definitely sympathise with below par teacher devices!
A2: The biggest influence is network/connectivity, or lack thereof. I think fear is a big driver too. No device = No probs!
Hi Megan and welcome! We're facing the same q in our school, some classes 100%, others 20-30%.
sorry i'm late! Annabel from Melbourne
which is my daughter but is still would have supported some sort of licence when she was ready
A2 Our Ss lease their Airs for $110 per term and buy out when they leave Year 6. Must have parent sign agreement 2 take home
Nice point. The challenge is for schools to have enough access it is up to the Ts. A2
demand for use has increased number of laptops available, though still not enough. Slowly moving to byod
A2 funds and Ts skills or leadership biases should be through consultation and research???
A2 Money & the ability of parents to pay for devices, but personally don't think parents should have to (should be option)
Onyl fashionably late! Welcome to
A2 we do a rent to own scheme over 3 years...
.A2. Budget. Money and lack of it. Small sch lowest decile 1a & no extra money so work with what we have got.
We did get our students to sign for a digital license this year rather than an acceptable use agreement
Chicken and egg problem for us...we bought devices but now the network struggles to cope
A2 Also, have had some mgmt who have said: "we're not buying any more chromebooks" w/ no reason except he doesn't like them
Tamaki has a truly unique scheme, what if a student leaves? A2
A1. they're not banning but they're not encouraging either. Well I am encouraging :)
That's sad. For the average user, Chromebooks did all that's needed at a good price.
Did they have to sit and pass a course for that? https://t.co/WdSJBN0UsM
We did get our students to sign for a digital license this year rather than an acceptable use agreement
Yes unfortunately a big influence can be the Ts with the loudest voice.
this is always my biggest problem with BYOD
if they still owe money, then they are "contacted" by the scheme
A1 - Bring it They need to have a laptop (we have min specs), everything else is a secondary device. https://t.co/ndAHmB38d1
A2 What NSWDEC supplies & supports mostly. Though some iPads with support unit interest & my skills :)
yes it is. Not once did he come see what I was doing with them in my classroom over a year
We allowed phones to be the device, can't compete with a CB or laptop, we'll be going with specs in 2017.
A2: Budget would also be an issue in many schools. I have no doubt we are privileged. We need to be careful of the divide.
A1 sadly very low ses means poor availablilty & quality of resources
Is there even enough agreement on what these would include? Or cooperation? https://t.co/41MwZf8DAi
A1/ Remember pen licenses? Why dont we have licenses for when kids have the softskills to use responsibly/effectively?
I've never heard the term softskills. Can you explain/define https://t.co/LF1tP7m4rz
A1/ Most responses about hardware, not about softskills or that goes with device use
we are laptop primarily as well. Seems to be more practical for most of the uses we have going.
Hey dropping by a little late tonight
A2 It appears a lot of personal preferences rather than sound pedagogy in decision making.
so you're saying have a variety of devices, software? Prob most ideal, gives Ss & Ts more options & flexibility
A2 we supply laptops for staff and still have labs for technology/media/photography classes https://t.co/0vqSawpTfZ
A2 In addition to 1:1 laptops, we also have access to a class set of iPads in learning areas. On the whole, I prefer iPads
She does/did. These issues need change management priniciples applied + consultaion
Our school's Decile 2 but have extremes. Now expecting devices, we have greatest inequity we have ever had.
No worries Jo always welcome!
How many schools would do all this better if they had better onsite support? That wasn't just overworked teachers?
A1 many schools I visit as ed consultant are BYOD (not phones though)
Some schools definitely have these. A great idea and easy way to ensure skills and safety.
my personal preference is for any device that can connect if that is what is required
The biggest issue with iPads is storage of larger files. Videos, etc. That's my struggle!
a1 in DET schools we get an allocation. We distribute equitably to classes from there
are aligned to emotional intelligence, but also Executive Functions.
Great point Stephen. When we reinforced our Wi-Fi, teachers didn't have to worry about being techies!
A3 BYOD is totally unfair to teachers. They dont work in Dick Smith!!
BYOD is MUCH harder to regulate but is more realistic to real world and ipads are $$$ https://t.co/E6wbUjNuiY
A1: iPads Only - to minimise teachers becoming technicians and minimal software update
A3 Having taught in a BYOD School I don't know that I could ever go back to a non classroom
A3 I'm a fence sitter. Idealistic yes I agree with total BYOD but I also believe in choice.
This is really interesting, please elaborate.
A3 I can see the benefits of BYOD but after working in a school where we supplied pens, books, food and bags. 1/2
I've been supplied a spare S laptop while I wait for the Dept to get me one. Our staff used to lease like the Ss
A3 Against - too much money, no device is perfect, shouldn't force particular one on a family
A3. Would love BYOD for all, but hard to do (equity mostly). But BYOD + school devices is more workable & fair.
A3 prefer BYOD Ss tend to look after them better but don't think schools prepare well enough in using them as tools
We had students buy phones so dear, they could have got CB and decent phone and had change.
Yes it is a trade off - but the iPads are robust we haven't lost one to friendly fire in two years at school
A3 BYOD ā Do we ask this about pens and pencils? No we insist they come prepared to learn!
A3 2/2 BYOD isn't always equitable
We pay for a full time tech. He spends most of the day fixing the network. Poor guy.
One would hope, but not always the case, I'd say
. Somexs I dream of being at bigger Sch again wth more money.Taught at decile 10 bt look at my Ss & think they love sch & lrng
That's cool. I think we have to go this way in NZ.
Spot on! As they change their needs we work with their parents to provide the best https://t.co/gwYwe9GVcU
so you're saying have a variety of devices, software? Prob most ideal, gives Ss & Ts more options & flexibility
A3 I like 1 to 1 and I think it unlikely we get that w/o compulsory byod. Hard to use tech well if some kids have no access
a3 Compulsory is tricky. I'm happy with 1:2 to allow rl collaboration so I'm not for compulsory byod.
We now have two and one for our social media!
A3: I like the idea of letting students bring the device they are comfortable with. But our IT dept hates the idea. Too hard!
NSWDEC made it work for a time with onsite TSO to reinforce tech. Note past tense though.
Whoa! What's a Pen Licencse? I'm trending from Baltimore/DC Learning a lot at https://t.co/DaO1KiKXOB
A1/ Remember pen licenses? Why dont we have licenses for when kids have the softskills to use responsibly/effectively?
what happens to families who can't afford a device because they are struggling to pay for the basics?
The cost is a little different here...
Would a class Google Drive help? I'm looking at going Google Classroom soon
Great answer and nice of you to join us for THE chat LOL. I want REQUIRED at our school but there is resistance.
We can plan for any device, smartphones can do just about everything with targeted outcomes and objs https://t.co/Kop3Mnum6q
We allowed phones to be the device, can't compete with a CB or laptop, we'll be going with specs in 2017.
A3: What if a ss can't afford a device?
Love the concept of byod but the equity issue arises.... Especially in inner London schools
pedagogy needs to be the focus, not how many devices a plan has to work on...
That's exactly what we're finding out...the hard way!
We explained to Ss that a licence is a privilege to be earned-AUP is an expectation & requirement
not always and even that can sometimes be out of the reach of low ses families
A3.BYOD can highlight&exagerate social inequity. What if your parents cant afford the most 'fashionable' device...?
Absolutely. Changes what you can do and how to make access equitable.
does the school supply class sets?
A3 25% of my Ss don't have internet at home so doubt they will be getting devices so against
how can you expect an essay to be typed on a phone?
This is the key, most school would go compulsory if not for the cost issue. We certainly would. We "expect"
we buy. No point in leasing. Not cost effective in the end. After 3 years warranty runs out we give to other
this is when schools should have devices to lease/lend for no charge depending on situ
Sorry for being late tonight. A3-Whilst I love BYOD (which my class is) being compulsory could add a lot of pressure on Ps
does it? Otherwise some ss would be disadvantaged
I've been at 2 schools 1:1 and they've both had devices for Ss who can't afford. They cant take them home
is life equitable? I think byod compulsory and then the school backs up by quietly filling the gaps.
It's had the biggest impact on teacher attitude - lack of budget has become an excuse to avoid digital change
agreed, but technology helps pedagogy, allows more ways of learning, more access to information
Yes I agree ICT - It Can't Teach
lol. I ate too much. Back on the bike tomorrow. Hubby driving so free to chat
A2 Range of apps available, durability, and IT support willingness to regulate all BYOD. In the end $ https://t.co/zNdO4UYmwI
but how is that equitable is tasks are needed to be completed at home
Anyone know a student over age of 10 without a smart phone?
Actually, with 84 Year 3/4 Ss, only 4 leave them at school. 2 are for religious reasons.
And that's the problem. Its easier to 'do' what we've always 'done'. Understandable though.
I know of a primary sch in AKL that helps ss get a laptos for $15 a month and free WiFi at home
i cant even write a text properly on a phone... working collaboratively etc is too much to expect of a phone
life is not equitable but we shouldn't always reinforce that in our kids
yes b/c schools insist on putting red flags on them like logo stickers to ensure it's not lost grrrrrr
We know we're doing good, no-one complains anymore. Anywhere can now be a classroom due to devices.
hard for teachers - at least in some situations/subjects too. I know a limited amount to help Ss with tech issues
Different device difficulty overrated, esp with tech department! Cloud tools bring same experience diff hardware
Ok, ciao for now digital peeps. I gotta go and talk to real ones.
.. What decile is your school?
it should be a level playing field, that is my argument. Imagine not being able to achieve cause you are poor
Cost & Equity are not issues! Schools need to ditch paper and texts, go digital texts and response.
Equity is matched to need
A4 Money, time to sort all devices out, theft, breakage, playing games in class, having to share with siblings, parent views
haha thanks. I'm not familiar with ink technology or Judy Blume. Public schools here don't teach cursive
vriety of devices has meant more time lost to Ss and Ts trying to make stuff go.
That's my next project, free Wi-Fi then no excuses for our community!
There hasn't been much. It's more unplugged home learning/activities
religious reasons? Never thought of that
wait... since when do Ss not achieve b/c they don't have a device?
A4: Biggest one is infrastructure. Having a network that can cope with the influx of devices. 2nd is monitoring their usage.
A4. None that haven't always existed in schools!
2 so we have to make sure somehow our students can all afford devices, can't afford not to!
A4 Monry, parental trust, community concerns.
Yeah but harder to set up and maintain connection. Rather than one set of specs, there are many.
A4 School leadership? Limited insight? Fear?
school covers. Lots of low decile schools making it work.
it makes a big difference
A4 Security, storage, charging stations, clear expectations about usage all need to be planned for.
Very multicultural school with lots of muslims. I love learning about different cultures and religions!
oh no, not saying that. Was saying school should be equal for all and social econ shouldn't play a part
Great point and welcome friend!
I've heard the chromebooks for $3-4/week, which is roughly the same. Will look into that one soon
. A4 .As I said money to buy them. Someone wth 8 kids has to buy food & shoes 1st.Their choice kids over devices so sch supply
https://t.co/fco9Vo5vUT issues!How does a school cater4so many different devices?How2maintain safety&security for staff&Sts?
me too. Can I ask what religion?
always remind myself the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again & expecting new results!
Primarily cost, but also insurance/damages which personally do not want to deal with
Well, yes, most of them? I find high school age/teens clearly change point.
A4 the number of kids parents have in the cluster as they have to finanace a device for each
Yep what Anna said - biggest issues right there... Why can't they just get it right? https://t.co/nKul9Gdz93
A4: Biggest one is infrastructure. Having a network that can cope with the influx of devices. 2nd is monitoring their usage.
Thanks for the global education I'm gonna be late for crew practice... then again i'm the coxswain :-)
A4-we found T had biggest impact on BYOD. If T planned for their use, S brought them in, otherwise they didn't bother
but what if we made it the Ss problem?! GIve them the opp to learn, rather than go to IT support?
When we got fibre and then Wi-Fi for all 100m out of school, the students bought in!
Also want to look into this. But baby steps, maybe too much in 1st term at a new school
It's not always about achievement. It can be the pace of learning or support for learning. https://t.co/tEJNHUmnVz
wait... since when do Ss not achieve b/c they don't have a device?
it does! It has the ss's interest in mind.
the TLN has been great...
All of these are about education, is that not what we do? https://t.co/N1pigGk8W5
A4 Money, time to sort all devices out, theft, breakage, playing games in class, having to share with siblings, parent views
Got to drop off my daughter Ros we her friends, back in 20 mins if the chat is still happening, been fun
And perhaps that's where people like you take risks and lead others! It's not easy, though.
Imagine? Don't have to. Have seen it first hand.
It's a real balance isn't it. The network has to work for Ts, Ss to believe in devices.
Not sure where I saw this though, may have been heavily subsidized
when they leave school do they keep the device?
okay, I didn't know that. You learn something new everyday
So many schools when they put their networks in underestimated tech usage. Pretty common I think.
A4 - Money, Wifi/broadband capabilities, security, Schools commitment to devices and their safety policies
I'm sharing this to in Baltimore/DC https://t.co/bYQWqAng96
I know of a primary sch in AKL that helps ss get a laptos for $15 a month and free WiFi at home
I planned for a BYOD lesson and the first week I had three devices the next week half the class.
I agree. S know how to use their own device-let them teach each other. Cloud tools make it easier tho
agreed, so compulsory for those who can and fill in the gaps. Visit Manaikalani trust to see low ses full 1- 1.
A4: Policy...and why we write policy imagining 90% of our students to be evil and deceptive. Block it to solve issues! Why?
Yes my point is that so many have had issues yet we still keep having them - not learning from each other?
Are they compulsory BYOD? Or do they provide the Ss with devices?
We get a 1 year interest-free Harvey Norman for under $1 a day approx.
We get a 1 year interest-free Harvey Norman for under $1 a day approx.
Knowing T value them as a learning tool makes a lot of difference to uptake
I haven't really asked. Other muslim parents see it as part of our learning and for Skyping relatives!
what if that was the content? Ss using problem solving to solve problems? I'm ok with that!
my son has a lot of Muslim friends in his online community
A4 I'd say a level of 'embarrassment' could affect Ss bringing their devices. Don't won't to have a 'lesser' device to peers.
Yep and schools needs to constantly update and maintain servers, yet many think it will be ok to leave them.
https://t.co/sHzKbh5jnt do you make sure students&staff are safe and supported online with a variety of devices&software etc
the low ses Ss are the ones who most need tech access through school. high ses get it at home
Sounds like a pretty good deal!
except it may be good to get some sleep too
so maybe turn off hour before sleep but BYOD
yet they would probably update their home hardware regularly
Plus, don't they have some massive corporate sponsorship?
A4 Plan, plan, plan. We called for volunteers for a team, 9 months before. Went through every scenario, S, T, P, $, wifi,
A5 Hard to do with BYOD policy. Bank of devices available for loan?
Not a expert in anything but from age when they begin use onwards!
A5 Buy the ex TELA machines from MOE and hire companies and give to students who need them on loan for a year
Significant focus on support and strategy too but does work eh
A5 we have so few devices we divided them up to allow for permanent access to digital learning opportunities
A partnership based on clear communication
But we go with the fear response. What if our kids do... We need to deal with behaviour. Tech not the prob
A5 They can't. The world is unequal. We can't ensure anything but just try our best to provide for those who need it
A4 asTs it may be difficult to navigate their uses - but then that's why we give Ss autonomy so conflicted right now
A5 share devices use phones use cheap chromebooks use cheap i tablets use shared devices use raspberry pi's?
ours don;t go to it support - the Ts have to figure it out or have Ss thumb twiddling. Some learn, some don;t.
totally agree that low ses def require more support.I think BYOD+School device is the best.
We're trying to stay away from the finance companies, they charge huge interest! Welcome Maro by the way.
Many schools have deals with local banks for 0% finance! https://t.co/R5j8Pk7yo6
We get a 1 year interest-free Harvey Norman for under $1 a day approx.
Never thought of this, benefit of a good D/A LOL. Need to think out of the box indeed!
A5 get money from pokies, raffles, fairs, fetes, raffles, sponsors, charities to buy and repair
I ask this, how do we refine fine motor skills such as writing (which does need to be taught) with tech?
yes when they can. When they can't I help them w content. I can;t help them all w too varied tech
And I could work with that. Most are too scared to try at our school. Get told off for 'fiddling'...
Yes but when it;s consistently down, it's very hard to regain faith and trust of Ts and Ss. Book rarely down!
access to the network at school.
A5 recycle old machines, laptops devices,do deals @ sponsors, i rebuilt pods of machines in early 00s hotwire
As much as it would be lovely to go all tech and paperless, it's not realistic. Foundation considerations need to be met.
We need a two year deal. Many families need 2-3 devices!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but quick read of the website mentions Spark and Samsung
Fine motor skills and writing do need to be taught, but I think drawing and planning sketches r šš» https://t.co/J6ovPk8d0V
I ask this, how do we refine fine motor skills such as writing (which does need to be taught) with tech?
Problem solving&independent learning are gr8 skills. But in the end content must be covered!
Loving the great ideas Tony. I know many schools in the US are putting Chrome into old laptops.
A5 shame govt, ask for cheap deals, ask for parent sponsors for other students, cheap loans, kalani style
our parents pay millions in via $15 per month..
out external exams in year 12 are still pen and paper, kids know how to write legibly
I meant devices purchased by the school that can be loaned to Ss during the day
I need to talk to you and Russel about this more.
A5 we ensured that all Sts who we knew were on bursaries or fee concession were loaned a laptop https://t.co/gS0QdclHYm
1 :1 laptop deals from UN anyone there who may be able to help??? unesco? hell maybe MOE, maybe rotary, jaycee
A5 tough 2 answerbut simple as make sure you have enough for at least 1:1 during a lesson otherwise Santa
Exactly and until that changes, then we are bound to pen/paper constraints.
. Families with multiple chn. Could be the only way they access a device https://t.co/BA5Pql41U6
We need a two year deal. Many families need 2-3 devices!
. That's why we are not soley ipads, use books too.5yr olds need to write their name etc
LOL. My misunderstanding Sorry! We do this but we have over 1500 students and a fair few without.
A2 cost influences school decision we cannot afford teh IT costs so better to go BYOD also maintenace licenses
Still the same skills that need to be taught.
.So are Universities in NZ & NCEA etc
Nice, I have to admit, my spelling's gone downhill!
yes I think they do get some help. But still impressive and possible.
tech is a tool not the be all and end all. Paper is still needed as are fine motor skills
listening to NZQA .. changes are in the near future
A5. Match the device to the student need and teach students about empathy!
A5 the only truly equitable way is to supply them from school free of charge
I think in most countries tbh.
A5: Considering each S and their individual needs. Make concessions for those who need. Loan computers they can take home!
A2 speed of obsolescence increasing so need to change more often - also no repair or maintenace budget
Great point! Come 2020 NZQA want all exams digital. What about those without?
Pedagogy then technology (Fullan).
Agree. Tech needs to help learning not become the main subject of learning.
LOL. Great minds.... just mentioned the 2020 expectation of all exams digital.
I'm big on this my son loves tech and writes like a 5 yr old
A5.2 once our laptops are out of warranty we give to country/overseas schools who ask. A bit harder with BYOD
I am the biggest tech advocate, but we need to think of the pedagogy first, then work from there.
and how will they be marked? Computer programs?
I can't even decipher my own writing and I'm not five!
Balanced or Ss will be tech-capable but literacy, numeracy poor.
are you secretly a doctor?
no one in their right mind says it is the main subject of learning!!!
In the case of English, will be submitted via secure link...I think!
Yes pen and paper and talking all important. So is tech in this world too.
A6 No one device. Have a mix of chromebooks/ipads and even smartphones for various things. More than 1:1 would be ideal
I remember our school trying to go paperless. Didn't work. Needs to be a balance.
A6 chromebooks... less hassle for staff...
Hard to believe only four years away? Optimistic! Realistic?
A6 The Qn should not be about devices ā it should be about facilitating learning.
computers can't mark creativity though
A6 Plus robots (programmable) and other makerspace things like littlebits or Makey Makey, etc
Hi Charlotte here - late. Online testing obv issue if limited device access issues with infrastructure too
yes this is v. important as one never knows what will be using in life after school
Whilst I agree w sentiment, its not poss 4 most schools-mine would never have the devices we have now w/outBYOD
A4 Cost culture typing literacy credit maintenance, priorities upkeep value worth need currency
A5.Teachers must make time to ensure class is nonjudgemental&safe to protect those without a 'cool' device
A5 - $64million question. There is no easy answer. Best option is 1:1 but you need a sponsor with deep pockets for that
Great point, schools just don't have the funds or R & M budgets.
A6. The device that each student needs to achieve the goals and skills they have
A4 Number of kids, decile poverty cash credit cost access to advice and loan sharks insurances
A6: keep researching, testing out new ways to learn/teach, network, share ideas, involve learners in the process.
no it would have to be funded by government
. ipads suit us for the moment as can get google on thm. Also across age ranges so suits all ages.Adapt apps for S needs/levels
A6 A mixture of devices, like in workplaces. 3D printers, spheros, robotics etc Of course, Apple is the superior product!
pilots show Ss need familiarity with relevant tech I think?
A6.I think ipads offer the best opps for learning, teaching&ease of use
I so agree, or a really really fair and accessible payment scheme. That's our challenge for this year.
as Michael Fullan says: pedagogy is the driver and technology is the accelerator
A6: The device we need rather than the one we want. Why before what. Might be different across learning areas? Let me choose!
A6 not sure there is a best device.
Maybe the one that fits the schooling context
A6.A lot can be achieved on a smartphone these days!
Interesting, we've gone with CBs but I think tablets better option for juniors.
A4 weight transport storage charge life fragile screens lockers software licenses repair costs
Yep! Exactly. And he is a very wise man!
by Ts. Just think how good to be able to read them properly!
A6 best option forward thinking-teacher education -develop capacity & build pos attitude toward device use and implementation
they are a great learning tool. Wish more teachers embraced them
A6 - I have no idea seeing I'm a student teach but I like laptops. I'm extd to c where future of teaching goes
yep.More than likely they already know their way around them too!
A6: My ss are experimenting with Bee Bots at the moment! :D
A6. Could schools pay a percentage of the cost of the device needed under discussion between St,Parent educator?
. Good night need sleep.Up late with last night. Gd thought provoking chat & grt discussions
So true, I've seen students type essays, slides. My Year 11s are making wevideos on their phones.
Sure, but the same with schools. They often go for the best deals, not necessarily the best options.
A6 access to variety of devices? some suit some Ss better than others just like our preferences change
true, just hard for Ss with issues such as dyspraxia or vision difficulties
Exactly! I think we all just need to win the lottery
Woah, steady on, your opinion is valid. After all, you have no baggage!
Ts have to let students lead in terms of possible tech options!
I would argue that dispensing w fine motor skills for instance is not progressing at all
I agree, but cost makes them prohibitive for so many.
agree absolutely. But there are great voice command options out there to help with those issues!
i cant see my kids using tinkercad on a phone!! too small ..
A6 Great post, particularly in 140 characters! Nice work. A
A6 we go for laptops - better for writing. We are MS365 not google so Cbs less appealing. HP streams ok and cheapish. abt$350
They are! ss love them and they don't realize they are coding!
Fair point but it is a start. I'd prefer CBs for all students and phone as second device!
Content over learning? Not sure I agree with that one! Hear what you're saying though.
true and they are becoming more effective although the laptop versions are much more powerful
No, but adequate fine motor dexterity is needed to be able to hold a pen/pencil/stylus/mouse.
Just think from the students and their future back and you'll do GREAT!
Yes! Students are more likely to be engaged with something they already are comfortable with using.
Two dimensional 3D printing!
A6 Our high school decided on a laptop-we did not restrict platform, just min specs for power & wifi. https://t.co/581jphW4XE
The streams are awesome can run both 365 and Chrome!
Also might want to look at and Dash & Dot from A step up from Bee Bots
Same skill. But is it enough? And those students who don't have that same tech at home?
We went Google due to some many Ss having android devices and CBs more cost-effective for our community.
I totally agree with you!But sadly standards must be met&exams passed. A truely hateful reality.
SPOT ON! https://t.co/5DXA4DsTJg
A6 best option forward thinking-teacher education -develop capacity & build pos attitude toward device use and implementation
yes we are liking them. Light and strong too.
