Hi #squirrelschat friends! It's Emily from @Squirrels. I am SUPER pumped to have @dsdPD host our monthly chat tonight. She is a rockstar in many ways, but also has vast knowledge about bringing #futureready skills to the classroom. Can't wait to hear from you all!
Welcome to #squirrelschat everyone!! I don't even want to talk about the last house project we started here because it's ongoing 🤦🏼♂️ Believe it or not, you have to have some amount of skill to redo a bathroom 🤷🏼♀️ Whoops!
Hello Kelly from Hiram OH last house project that I started may have been the flooring in the addition to the farmhouse (did I finish it no but my wonderful husband did 😀) #squirrelschat

A1: I believe knowledge is having information about a specific topic or to complete a task. Thinking is applying or combining knowledge of concepts to generate plans and new ideas #squirrelschat
A1 - To me, knowledge is about knowing facts, theories, or stories. On the flip side, thinking is the practical application of knowledge. It's the action. You can have knowledge, but how do you apply it in life? #squirrelschat
I love this video! Thank you for sharing this @dsdPD. It's a fun and light-hearted way to look at knowledge vs. thinking by the distinguished @neiltyson. I suggest people take a few minutes during or after the chat to watch! #squirrelschat
A2: I love to “Figure it Out” when working on DYI projects or when I am implementing new #futureready ideas for the classroom. #squirrelschat@squirrels
A2: For my project the practical building part was knowledge I got from the internet, the thinking was more related to the planning, idea generation, and a lot of asking myself, is this really a good idea? #squirrelschat
A2 one project I did this summer was to make a “giant” kerplunk game for my classroom! It definitely was a figure it out! I had ideas of what it would look like and then searched for items that would work for it. Made it then had my own kids try it & then adjusted #Squirrelschat

When you’re figuring it out on your own, it leads to more satisfaction when the project is complete. Bet the game is a great hit for the class! #SquirrelsChat
A3: have Ss work together and being creative about problem solving! Teaching then that it’s okay if they fail but what did you learn & how can you make adjustments #squirrelschat
I actually had them predict how many balls would drop if they pull a stick and if they predicted correctly it didn’t count against them on their score!! #Squirrelschat
A3 - Creating a safe space for students to fail is incredibly important. They will mess up in their career (I know I do 🙋🏼♂️) and they have to be ready to admit their mistake, make adjustments, and move forward. #squirrelschat
A3: What is #futureready? One Student is different from another student. Educators need to look at the individual S and see them for what they want their future to be. #SquirrelsChat
A3: At work we are asked to do tasks w/out specific instructions. In the classroom give Ss ambiguous or non-specific directions. Step back & let productive struggle happen. Ss learn teamwork, initiative & how to ask for help, all necessary skills in the real world #squirrelschat
I just did this with my Ss this week I said separate a mixture and gave them no procedure!! I had lots of kids just dive right in but then at the end of the period they said we totally screwed but no what to do tomorrow & will get it all done !! #Squirrelschat
Yes, yes, yes! Failure to admit failure always results in more failure...I'm pretty sure that's my own original idea so feel free to quote me on that one #squirrelschat

It's so valuable! As teachers its hard, our natural inclination is to jump in and provide answers but letting the struggle happen is preparing students to be successful in the real world! #squirrelschat
Do you want a new Twitter header?! Should I get it tattooed on me with your name? Maybe a statue in your honor with this on the front?! Trying to decide the best way to showcase your genius 🤔 #squirrelschat
A4: just talking to Spanish T about @Flipgrid & told her she needs to connect with a Spanish speaking classroom so we can help their Ss learn English and we can work on our Spanish #Squirrelschat
Which helps teach awareness and general habits of noticing which is a skill lot of people are really lacking today...your class sounds on point! 👏 #squirrelschat
We built @ReflectorApp and @classhub specifically with feedback from educators who were using our existing products in the first place. Using student devices the right way in class builds better learning for all. #SquirrelsChat
A4: also showed a wonderful group of Ts Google Drawing & all the amazing things Ss can create in it we even found a scramble template for Ss to play against each other #squirrelschat
I think I might have been one of the first @ReflectorApp users :) I love Reflector and now use @classhub during my mini lessons to make sure the students are staying focused during digital content and future ready learning labs. #squirrelschat@squirrels

A4: I like to use tools that Ss will likely encounter outside of the classroom. @Slack is a messaging tool that is great for collaboration & communication and is used in a ton of companies & organizations in the real world. #squirrelschat
A5: Flexible w/ opportunities for students to have choice in where and how they learn. This helps students learn the executive functioning skills like self-regulation & time management that they'll need when teachers & parents aren't around #squirrelschat
My favorite question! I love talking about a physical space that promotes #futureready learning. Especially because I've never worked in an office that looks anything like a "traditional" classroom. 🙃 A mixture of flexible, collaborative and independent work areas #squirrelschat
A5: Where S's can go and work on projects as a group or as an individual. We need to change the classroom and get away from desk and rows. #SquirrelsChat
A5: one of my Ss just asked me today “ why don’t you have a desk?” I said this is all your space to learn so if I want to sit I will sit and learn with you! #squirrelschat
I have actually taught in the first classroom set up. That is from Iowa. #squirrelschat@squirrels. An amazing space with a campfire in the middle. It works well for PD and classroom instruction.
Take a look at this photo from Tuesday. A 2nd grade classroom where students were working on #FutureReadySkills while the teacher was conducting a mini-lesson. #squirrelschat@Squirrels
