So true. Definitely need to be aware of biases that we have and figure out how to defy those biases
Cultural Competency is Proactive and Intentional
A1: Constantly working toward understanding Ts & Ss different than you and how that impacts interactions/learning/p.o.v.
A1. Wow! Great question. No one can be proficient. It's an on going learning event towards equality for all.
A1: attitudes and beliefs that enable us to be supportive of people in cross-cultural settings.
that sounds like a textbook definition
A1 Our organizational policies, practices, and values connected to (or in response to) diversity.

Thanks for joining us Samantha! Vance in the house!
Agreed. You have to understand your own bias' https://t.co/No6DjzZKI1
A1: Understanding & identifying your bias, others' differences, & working to teach/learn with that gap in mind.
I think it's an odd pairing? Can you "achieve" cultural proficiency? There's always someone else to meet and something to learn
And be willing to question that bias
Appreciate your view here - would you say people are proficient in their own culture? https://t.co/HTcP4SZk8A
A1. Wow! Great question. No one can be proficient. It's an on going learning event towards equality for all.
Thank you for joining us Dr. Webb!
A1 I think it's when everyone is comfortable enough to ask questions and nobody is offended.
Thank you "love the embracing"
A1: being knowledgable &continuing to grow in knowledge of other cultures &their acceptance/tolerance/integration into classroom.
I'm with . I'm a sponge tonight, .
Excellent answer! https://t.co/HXgukF89TM
The understanding that cultural ideologies and understanding fall on a continuum for everyone
Yes, we must have the courage to openly question and have discussions around our own bias
A1. Being inclusive and accepting of others beliefs and values and a willingness to learn
Thanks for joining us Kara!
We can’t change others’ biases if we don’t change or question our own
Totally agree, continuing to grow is important!
BTW nice pic in the N&O's North Raleigh News...congrats TOY finalist!
A1 I guess we'll know we're proficient when it's no longer an issue.
so true! It starts with reflection. https://t.co/zCw6h40H8b
We can’t change others’ biases if we don’t change or question our own
LOL, my brain can do that sometimes. Promise I'm not cheating.
Just to clarify...biases & lenses are two different things. Not sure you can change bias?
Great answer. Thanks for joining us Paula!
I don't think you can achieve. 1 culture has many diff aspects & differences within. It's a constant learning process.
A1: it is your ability to engage your Emotional IQ with the world around you
Awareness is key. Great answer.
Great discussion tonight! https://t.co/wS6EVgXsok
A1: Understanding & identifying your bias, others' differences, & working to teach/learn with that gap in mind.
I feel like we could have the whole on Q1! Love this.
More and more I see the issues in my classroom are a result of my own bias/perspective of 'What is School,
We're always on a journey toward being better than we were yesterday! Live, work, act, speak w/ intention https://t.co/rKqfpDzMXh
I think it's an odd pairing? Can you "achieve" cultural proficiency? There's always someone else to meet and something to learn
Not sure. I think your lenses can redefine your bias if you adjust them enough.
Yikes! I hope we can. I would like to think we can evolve, grow, reflect and change with experience https://t.co/opkuEosLlB
Just to clarify...biases & lenses are two different things. Not sure you can change bias?
A2: Stereotypes/labeling impacts students’ perceptions about themselves
I agree with that! It's taking me awhile to read through as I process these great responses!
Agree..I think teaching empathy and graciousness through exposure benefits everyone https://t.co/h4PUy4bF7b
I think it's an odd pairing? Can you "achieve" cultural proficiency? There's always someone else to meet and something to learn
A2: Definitely can hinder the environment of inclusiveness we all try to create in our classrooms/schools
Thank you! All about developing best practices and awareness
A2 - Self-fulfilling prophecy. How we are treated/labeled will impact how we view ourself and others.
A2: Well I think in the simplest answer...students lose trust in those organizations and classroom.
We leaked questions for some prep time 🤔
A2: They create a barrier that stifles or inhibits the growth of a student (or even a T's capacity to grow).
A2: if we close ourselves off in the classroom - we try to fit others into our boxes and not allow them to be themselves
A1:Culture has a complex definition.
A2: Lack of staff self-awareness/perspective=belief blinders=no change in practices= continued assumptions & outcomes disparity
A2: We say "all kids"...but how often do we hear "well you know *that* class" or "*these* kids"...
Problematic much?
How can systems avoid this issue?
I agree. It creates a vicious cycle. https://t.co/uKGtC5JX8j
A2 - Self-fulfilling prophecy. How we are treated/labeled will impact how we view ourself and others.
A2: Set the stage for the rest of the student's life, how the student views themself and others.
A2: Stereotypes create barriers
As an educational system can we move past this?
A2: Stereotypes can effect Ss self thoughts &ability to feel connected part of community. Can hinder a Ts true perspective of Ss.
A2: it all goes back to our willingness to build the relationships with our students. They are who they are - r we a role model?
So true!! I can't stand that!
A2 Labels and stereotypes perpetuate a cycle of inequity (I could go on, but I'll just leave it right there...).
When kids articulate how adults cast judgements over them b4 giving them a chance to prove them wrong! It hurts them and us
A2- this reminds me of the saying "if you think you can or you think you can't, you're right"
We need to. The labels lead to inequities.
that keep the system going
A2: When Ss come to you w/ labels given to them it hurts their mindset. They believe it &it's hard to chg https://t.co/ga4euw68Wz
And barriers are hard to break!
Limits what we expect Ss to achieve-and we tend to get what we expect :(
Absolutely! Thanks for joining in tonight.
A2: a) accidental labeling & stereotping = self identify as much more proficient than you are = Ss lose trust/can't connect
A2: When S's don't feel like they belong in any capacity, they will not grow to their fullest potential
As leaders what can we do to change this perception?
When we stereotype, we label others and ourselves... So much for proactive thinking and mindset when that happens!
A2. It nurtures the belief in our students that perception is reality!
Yes. I wouldnt be in this work if I didn't believe that.
But I think it starts with us. Me. You. Not Ss. https://t.co/50NSNHqk9y
As an educational system can we move past this?
A2 when a students speaks a certain way, you immediately judge them
A2: b) labels & stereotypes breaks down student ability to feel accepted/understood in class
Agreed. And then you get see...they behave just as I expected...sad cycle. https://t.co/Y3fj4I77Ni
that keep the system going
A2. Stereotypes =A wall between students and teacher
Stereotypes creates barriers period. They are a block for learning.
A2.Labels/Stereotypes can give you tunnel vision and you lose sight of the whole person
Sure. But can we dig where we stand? Education is where we are. What can we do here? Today? Now? https://t.co/IZwofMuVg0
It's bigger than the "education system."
Is that the speakers or listeners issue?
a2: it is not what we say, but how we say it - do we perpetuate the stereotype? Do we stay silent? What do SS "hear" us saying?
A2: c) orgs that don't recognize this is occurring can then have breakdown within their own staffing ="taking sides" within staff
A2: We must BELIEVE that all students are capable of learning no matter what history might tell us otherwise.
A2: Actions speak louder than words. Even if we have addressing it verbally how are we checking our actions? Ts set the tone.
Stereotypes create barriers period. They are a block for learning.
Thank you! I believe it's very important to recognize the ones we do have
Amen! If a Ss does poorly on an EOG, you say "I knew it!" Did your actions HELP create that poor score? https://t.co/8dTkPbI7dc
Limits what we expect Ss to achieve-and we tend to get what we expect :(
I agree and in our actions as well-they speak volumes as well
Preach it! Bury 'I can't" all students are miracles in motion. Pure potential https://t.co/DXIVlutvUC
A2: We must BELIEVE that all students are capable of learning no matter what history might tell us otherwise.
Please remember to include the in your responses!
Stereotypes stifle prototypes And ignoring the presence of such tragedy is perpetual suffocation
Stay open for THEM. Give them a chance. Don't allow Ss to believe it. Help them prove it wrong. w/them!
A2: d) in the end Ss lose in the classroom itself (Ts stereotype) and within a system if perpetuated within a school.
the listeners issue. More important to hear what they are actually saying
I just said this same thing on another post....I completely agree!
Absolutely! To quote Elsa "Let it go! Let it go!" https://t.co/4tf543oumb
A2: We must BELIEVE that all students are capable of learning no matter what history might tell us otherwise.
Stereotypes are real. It is hard work to see past them. We must keep working hard and continue the crucial conversations
Absolutely! But the digging needs to be done in regards to bigger issues.
YES. Not only what history might tell us, but also what our biases and (some) core beliefs tell us. https://t.co/H3XoJyISxi
A2: We must BELIEVE that all students are capable of learning no matter what history might tell us otherwise.
I think we do a lot to fix the system but not too much to prepare students to fix the larger problem.
Hey family!! Made it back ahead of schedule! Tweeting via iPhone while Mac/tweet deck fire up! Brendan, IRT at
hmmm. Say more about what you mean
A2: Stereotypes exist so we have to identify and address them with adults before we can teach children not to have them.
You're a braver man than me on the phone with
- I call them toothpaste comments - once you say it, not goo go back in tune! Same as actions! https://t.co/B1rkqjpsEm
I agree and in our actions as well-they speak volumes as well
Welcome!! We've missed you!!
Yeah! Glad you made it! Did you register for ? https://t.co/bmTn9fczTe
Hey family!! Made it back ahead of schedule! Tweeting via iPhone while Mac/tweet deck fire up! Brendan, IRT at
It's fine to work w/in a "bubble" or what we call the edu system. But how does that impact the bigger picture?
We as teachers & school staff need to reflect on our actions& words to ensure that we aren't passing on biases/stereotypes.
I agree, those conversations are difficult. But they are needed, our students need the adults to be brave.
Absolutely! An sadly enough, in some cases that language/message comes from people they admire.
Ss need to learn that once they join the real world they have to be the ones to challenge inequity
Good work in isolation is just that.
We also stereotype ourselves! How do we uplift our profession if we only highlight the obstacles?
I think the problem of inequity is so large that the only logical place to start is in education. Where else?
This work is enormous-we must band together to improve our system-the ripples will have an effect https://t.co/8x0e02zoU1
I think we do a lot to fix the system but not too much to prepare students to fix the larger problem.
Welcome back! Great chat tonight. Tons of people on and it's moving fast!
agree! we can do it with the help of
I agree but it should be work that empowers our students to take that work out of the classrooms and use it.
We are as powerful as we believe we are. If you think you can change a student's life you will!
I think I need to think about this some more...sitting here reflecting
Yes!This is why teaching connectedness through curriculum is so important! So Ss see vitality of learning. https://t.co/P83awxV4Ze
Ss need to learn that once they join the real world they have to be the ones to challenge inequity
We must persevere as we expect S's to, change does not happen overnight, the ripple effect is a process https://t.co/Gb0rmsApRi
This work is enormous-we must band together to improve our system-the ripples will have an effect https://t.co/8x0e02zoU1
I think we do a lot to fix the system but not too much to prepare students to fix the larger problem.
but nothing we do in ed is isolated. Ss are impacted by what we teach, they in turn, impact others.
A3: By not naming *white* dominant culture. IJS.
Start by following & ! too! Keep tweeting & sharing the positives! https://t.co/i3CGGzSTx2
We also stereotype ourselves! How do we uplift our profession if we only highlight the obstacles?
Ditto I want the work to be worth the work. Every little bit helps- agreed! 1/2
A3: Intentionally & unintentionally by not providing equity in the classroom
As an entire ed system it's tiptoed around but as individuals many TRY!
A3: Oooo...I'm thinking about who I call on and how I call on students
we've been doing a little bit of work for awhile. Ready for change that carries outside of class
honored that you remember our work together.
A3, By not teaching how we really got here. We leave many things out of books/lessons.
When we expect all ss to align themselves to the white dominant culture, we are reinforcing the dominance.
Wow there are not enough characters on Twitter...see the Ignite2020 video and you will see plenty...
A3: By only telling one side of story. Sticking to the historical narrative that we've always told.
By the curriculum we use!
A3 - We do this by assuming there are dominant cultures. No culture should ever be considered a “dominant.”
A3: Intentionally and Unintentionally being solely reactive and selectively responsive.
A3: Literature choices, exposure to historical/current leaders, etc.
Also, how we respond to students when they are called on (wait time, praise, further questioning, etc).
Not being inclusive of non-dominant cultures in our curriculum
Often seen that the "dominant culture" can very per school/organization
Yes. We do a great job teaching THE narrative. Let's teach more ABOUT narrative in SS class https://t.co/SLE9fgmCOT
A3: By only telling one side of story. Sticking to the historical narrative that we've always told.
A3: Questions asked, students called on/not called on, materials used, prior knowledge just to name a few
And unfortunately, sometimes it's because our Ts lack the knowledge themselves
I find that the curriculum is becoming more and more diversified over time…especially social studies.
A3: we become lazy and allow ourselves the easy way out! Kids are smart - they notice!
We are doing the same-careful observation revealed response and participation could def be more equitable https://t.co/j5PXm0belL
A3: Oooo...I'm thinking about who I call on and how I call on students
A3. Books in classrooms, classroom/schoolwide culture, tone, etc. Ss can pick up quickly if we genuinely care or not.
A3: Grouping Ss, utilizing/not until ing various cultural examples in texts, even specific holidays off school.
A3 One way is by not using/including a variety of cultures in our lessons, examples, and images.
Thank you! I think that is what all organizations strive to obtain
A3. Through what is not addressed or said to avoid discomfort, opportunities for students participation, materials
One of my struggles is when do I *speak* up as a white dude that gets the benefit of the doubt, and when do I *shut* up?
A3. Defining school norms based on our own, expecting students and parents to make the adjustments curriculum
I agree culture and tone is key, evident in your everyday conversations and actions
like, how many PoC are here in this space?
A3: How do we work to look through the eyes of others on a daily basis. Build awareness.
True, I sadly admit that I just recently obtained a ton of new knowledge of how we are where we are today
When our lessons/ books in elementary still still include the fable of "the first thanksgiving" long way to go!
Building relationships with all students, listening, student feedback
A3. If we believe the stereotypes.
Wow, time is flying! Q4 coming shortly
A3. Non-responsive and Instruction, Curriculum, and Environment; we put the learner last
"Books should be windows and mirrors" Diversify instructional materials
Reflection is an essential tool for every educator. Review your implicit bias in the microscope, but it can be uncomfortable!
Good point. In response to that, what do you do? I have to find additional sources, but cmapp is getting there.
A3 Watched the famous Ferris Bueller classroom clip during PD. Was asked "What did you notice?" I said "Every1 looked the same."
And I fear Ss can pick up when we aren't being authentic either. We should point out our weaknesses & blind spots
Erin Lawrence IRT/ Coach@ BES
A1. Cultural proficiency is being aware that we all have a "story"
A3: By ignoring the intentional and unintentional infrastructures and patterns , yet expecting different outcomes!
Ts need more PD on this! Need modeling. Need to teach how to embed. Would help improve beliefs & stereotypes.
I think truly great teaching requires no small amount of courage. https://t.co/nPJzCa1cON
Good point. In response to that, what do you do? I have to find additional sources, but cmapp is getting there.
Absolutely!! https://t.co/nQkyXHTVe6
Pls don't EVER stop "speaking up". We ALL need more people like you to speak up no matter what color you are.
A3 By not validating all students.
Good point! Becoming aware is key!
Yes and then the hard work comes, if you are uncomfortable with what you see what will you do about it.... https://t.co/godSuPLFG5
Reflection is an essential tool for every educator. Review your implicit bias in the microscope, but it can be uncomfortable!
A3: Hiring practices, “school within a school” scheduling, thinking is better than ,
work in Hillsborough County Florida as a Social and Emotional Learning Coordinator
Many college of educations are training prospective teachers on this...and rightfully so.
Yes! We are so worried about offending someone, that it's safer to chose silence sometimes. https://t.co/Bho9yJIY6w
Ts need more PD on this! Need modeling. Need to teach how to embed. Would help improve beliefs & stereotypes.
A4 cannot be answered in 140 characters!!
A4: Wondering if it's possible to answer "how do they not?"
A4: All of these impact classroom instruction & culture b/c the teacher must be responsive to student needs
A4: I think A LOT about the texts I choose to use. A LOT.
Completely understand. How do I show real empathy? Is it possible or am I too privileged for it to be real?
A3: Asking are we embracing true diversity or expecting acceptable assimilated diversity? Ie: Be you but do it "this way"
Awesome to hear for the future of the profession! Need more for the present, too.
A4: They allow for a rich classroom environment when they are celebrated, embraced, and embedded in a positive manner.
My view is constantly evolving on this...but I think for me, raising the issue, & then supporting those w lived exp.
A4: Should in SO many ways but think bigger issue is they need to more in a positive way.
Do you feel anyone one area takes precedence over the others?
A4 I'll say they influence positively if the space is safe, accepting of diff, and constantly reflecting on personal growth.
A4 - Choose your resources intentionally. I always make sure to find multiple perspectives and Ss have to view/respond to both.
A4. They all effect the learning environment. Trust, compassion, tolerance and relationships are essential!
I know what is in my heart, I hope my students can see through my race to my heart.
A4: whew unpacking this might break the Internet 🙈👂🏾
A4 the culture of the school starts first with the staff. We are the role models for our students. Seek to understand
Authentic and real learning in place when this occurs.
A4. A lot has to do w/ exposure. Coming from elem lens, when Ts have culture of genuine caring & discuss differences Ss flourish
As a white man, I don't get labeled as the angry ____ or "always bringing it up"
A4: huge Q: As white, southern baptist, middle class, college grad born in eastern Nc- IMPACT? Have 2 draw on experiences
A4: Every single class that I walk into is different. Important to know that tmw might require different practices than today.
A4b. I'll say it's a negative influence if the space is close-minded, untrustworthy, disrepectful and unwelcoming of diversity.
A4: They create it. Wealthy, white, Christian males have their experience as the school culture and everyone else has to adapt
A4 - Ss need to know that they are respected and appreciated. That cannot occur if you are not equitable and tolerant.
all are equally important...but responded to differenty
Agree, went last weekend!!
A4-most people have said what I was thinking- the influences are always present, we just need to make sure they are positive
Very important topic will take more than a hour to break down!! Our Final Question is coming up.....
A5: I think a great start is by text & video choice & letting Ss share.
I agree. In some spaces, the differences are used as an asset. In others, they are not which is a real shame.
Thank you for sharing. And I hope we, as Ts, see thru to our Ss hearts as well.
Recognize and celebrate the races, cultures, languages and more! Kids must know what they bring/who they are is important
Let's not forget about sexual orientation and gender identity
A4. (b) Growing up in rural Ohio my parents went above & beyond to expose me to so much culturally. Helped me understand/relate.
A4. All can turn a classroom into the "family" Ts yearn to create! Modeling social awareness is key!
A4: If we embrace diversity, we all grow and benefit. If we avoid it, we stifle those who do not look, think, act, etc. like us.
Very true. When used as an asset it's a dynamic learning space/opportunity.
A4: we have to put ourselves in experiences that allow us to understand our students - allow them to influence our heart
A4. (c) In short, experiences I was exposed w/ growing up helped mold me into the global thinker I am today as an educator w/ Ss
We have to decide: how are we going to use them as positives to enrich our classrooms/schools? https://t.co/rF1navJAM5
A4-most people have said what I was thinking- the influences are always present, we just need to make sure they are positive
Amen! https://t.co/tmc1MtYiZm
A4: If we embrace diversity, we all grow and benefit. If we avoid it, we stifle those who do not look, think, act, etc. like us.
A5: In my short time as AP, I think the biggest thing we can do is build practices that embrace restoration and healing.
A4: knowing and understanding our students
A5: CP PD and awareness training…REI institute is amazing!!
A4: It facilitates what is grown, inhaled, and nurtured in your building. The support or lack there of becomes the trademark
A5: Be open and talk with students about procedures AND resources in class
I agree. So many opportunities for empowerment/stereotype shattering in those classrooms.
Let me just say... is always great, but tonight's dialogue is phenomenal! We need more of this!
So proud to be in this work with you all. https://t.co/cjzMakrARv
Let me just say... is always great, but tonight's dialogue is phenomenal! We need more of this!
A5, knowledge and relationships
Edit: A5: In my short time as AP, I think we should build practices that embrace restoration, awareness, relationships & healing.
A5 - Ts need trainings on how to build these relationships AND how to teach Ss to do the same.
A5 Make cultural diversity more visible.
Q5: one: talk about it! Raise the awareness. Ask the tough questions - stop rationalizing and start looking for a solution
SM has made differences more public. People aren't trying to hide as much as they used to. It has advantages and disadvantages.
A5. Relationships that are genuine and meaningful. Ongoing communication w/ Ss & parents. Balance positives & negatives.
A5. As Ts it's our duty to be life-long learners and constantly evolving humans. Tolerance & a true interest in others is a must
For sure! But my feed (or phone) can't keep up! Love the pace, the dialogue, and the challenge of this
Q5: Relationships are key before any type of curriculum change. Build that trust and accepting environment first.
A5: Text & media choice, Ss & families sharing & interacting to make their culture part of the class/school culture. T too!
A5: I think someone said it earlier. We need to be brave. Difficult conversations need to be had. We r the change we seek
A5. PD, scrutinize our practices w/ others to further embrace cultures of our classroom, make changes based upon T & S's needs
Well said! We need to get comfortable having more uncomfortable conversations https://t.co/ulptHz6vQD
A5: I think someone said it earlier. We need to be brave. Difficult conversations need to be had. We r the change we seek
Thank you all for joining in on the conversation tonight! Continue to make & your organization the best it can be!
I yearn to have Open conversation s about critical topics that affect our Ss! Trust has to be established.
. made a HUGE step when creating the position of Asst Superintendent for Equity Affairs and hiring Dr. Rodney Trice.
I think (hope) this is he goal. How do we begin the building of these aspects?
Awareness: do not allow uniforms to mask the issues - everyone not the same! Work for an equitable education to meet needs
A5: Student choice!!! In seating, how assignments are completed, etc. Each S's choice & opinion is valued
