#MasteryChat is a weekly chat with a growing family of educators from around the word focused on teaching better and reaching more students. Topics cover an array of challenges and solutions for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas, admins, and support staff.
#MasteryChat occurs every Thursday at 8:00pm eastern.
The chat was created by team at @thegridmethod, but is hosted by guest moderators each week. Our primary moderators are @techieteachott, @raehugart, and @jeffgargas.

Hello. My name is Susan, and I am a first year teacher from IL and founder of #newteacherjourney. I am on a walk, so I will try not to run into anything. 😀 #masterychat
Hi all! I'm checking in from Guadalajara, Mexico! I'm Tami, doing some international teaching since 2009. I teach pre-first (a grade between K & 1st). #masterychat
I was watching "America's Got Talent recently and some guy was simultaneously spinning eight plates on poles. I was like "pssshhh, I can read eight books in eight different rooms at the same time."
#masterychat

A1 - A lot of what I read is directly related to education or new ideas in Education and my writing is much of the same. Always trying to #teachbetter#masterychat
A1: Much of my reading and writing relates to teaching and learning, but I do try to branch out and read texts that might be outside of my comfort zone, too. I don't really write outside of my comfort zone, though! #masterychat
Whoops! Was logged on as my teacher account instead of my professional development account. Kristen here from PA. I teach 6th grade physical science. #masterychat

I’m constantly inspired by my #PLN to read awesome books and blog!!
#masterychat
My reading life has become so much better now that I read with my kids and have focused on reading their recommendations! My writing life needs more time #masterychat

A1: I’m reading about 4 education books right now and one just for fun. We started DEAR - drop everything and read @SSCMSStallions this year. The SS love seeing the ts read with them. #MasteryChat
A1: I consistently blog and write with my students. I recently read an idea from #SparksintheDark to carry a notebook like I would a book. Then I can write anytime, anywhere. #MasteryChat
A1 My reading life is all about escaping into different worlds and seeing different points of view. My writing life is all about expressing myself, emotions, and moods. #masterychat
A1: As a reader...I love reading for more information at work. I like to be in the know! But then in my free time I love fiction & YA lit. 📚 Writing for me is extremely therapeutic. 📝 #MasteryChat
A1 I have always considered myself a reader. When I was young you could rarely find me w/o a book in my hand. I didn't much consider myself a writer, until recently. I have found my written voice, and I love it! I look forward to developing more as a writer. :) #masterychat
A1: Currently taking admin classes so reading life is edu. leadership lately! Pleasure read Suspense & Forensics!
As a student I write reflections and assignments...when I'm done I hope to get back to writing poetry and song lyrics! Reading/writing = therapeutic! #MasteryChat
A1: My reading life is on a very personal slide lately. I'm reading for pleasure, thought, & entertainment more. Same for writing. It's the creative side of me bursting at the seams. I need to find the balancewith professional reading and writing this year. #masterychat
A1: As a child, I loved to read books. As a teacher now, I still love to read, but I wish I had more time to do so. I try to write a blog post every week or so. #masterychat
A1: I consistently blog and write with my students. I recently read an idea from #SparksintheDark to carry a notebook like I would a book. Then I can write anytime, anywhere. #MasteryChat
A1. Reading: Flying through leadership and educational books and still have a large pile on my nightstand. Writing: Let’s just say I’m more into reading... #MasteryChat
A1- My reading life is my very own escape hatch. I read for pleasure, for learning, for relaxing, for imagining. I love to write letters and stories- and, more recently, comic books with my 4-year-old #MasteryChat
A1: Right now all of my reading and writing is centered on W620 which is a course dedicated to assigning and assessing. But, when I am not in class, I like to read poetry and approaches to poetry books. Currently reading STARTING WITH LITTLE THINGS. #masterychat
Always enjoy reading to learn something new! I feel as if using written communication has become even more important as technology has increased. Knowing how to get a clear message across is crucial! #MasteryChat
A1: I read a book every two to three days 4 pleasure reading. I've been working on a professional book every two to three months. I write w/my son back and forth and I write to model 4 my Ss #MasteryChat
A1: I’d describe as vital to both my work and my play. The only thing I do more than communicate with video creation: communicate via the written word. #MasteryChat
A1: I enjoy motivational books that expand upon my ideology of leadership, understanding how to best meet the needs of special education students, and writing on college & career preparedness.
#MasteryChat
A1: I'm a voracious reader and love to writing but hesitant to share my voice in print. (My HS english teacher told me I wasn't a good writer and I let that stick with me for far too long!) #MasteryChat
A1. I probably write a lot more than I read when it comes to the amount of time. But there’s nothing better than reading and writing with my own kids. That’s when it’s precious #MasteryChat
A1 I am an avid reader. I read everything. I prefer mindless romance at the end of a long day but this summer I read 3 professional books as well. I read novels, newspapers, real books and ereaders... I suck at writing. #MasteryChat
A1 professionally, my reading life revolves around Spanish... news, short stories, song lyrics etc. I love writing and enjoy writing individualized letters of rec #MasteryChat
A2: Transparency teaches! Be open, critical, sharing struggles and breakthroughs. This takes pressure off of Ss who think everything they read or write has to be perfect. Nope.
#masterychat
A2: As a first year teacher, I plan on publishing a post about my journey each week or so. I plan to write one tomorrow. I also want to add what I am reading to my email signature. #MasteryChat
Just because I teach math, doesn't mean I only teach math. Math in found in the Interdisciplinary areas of the real world. #BlendContent#teachBetter#Masterychat
A2: I share my writing with my students. Most of my writing comes from learning I do with my students. Lots of what I read, I share with students. I read along with my students (YA Lit. ) #Masterychat
A1: I have been reading a lot. Recently read #tlap and #theinnovatorsmindset. I started #BetheOne and next is #plap #. I have not written anything in a while, but I would like to get back to journaling. #masterychat
#masterychat A1 Reading life needs improvement. Writing Life = I AM PUBLISHING MY 1ST BOOK IN ABOUT 2 MONTHS! So exciting now. "The Story Of Always Believe" will be coming out late October.
A1 - I love to read and write, but I often find that they both get put on the back burner. Family and students come first and take a ton of my time. I read when I can, and try to write at least a little each week. The struggle is real. #MasteryChat
A2: I talk about reading and writing constantly. I share my opinions (positive and negative) with my students. I tell them what I loved, hated, and how passion inspired me. When teaching creative writing, I let them read my writing too. #masterychat
A1 My reading life right now is focused on the professional side. I am genuinely a nonfiction reader by choice however I am a sucker for a good fiction mystery thriller! My writing currently is subpar I would have to give myself a D minus LOL
#MasteryChat
A2: I am sharing my book choices with the class and they recommend YA books they think I should know. We are becoming a reading community and it's exciting! I write with them and share my writing. We are writing a blog together. My class publicists are pumped #masterychat
A2 - I think reading WITH students is huge (not aloud) but finding common thematic connections between what you are reading and the content is always a great way to engage them in the conversation! #masterychat
A2 I share my own writing including my own struggles w/ writing.
Also, as a math teacher, Ss resist the idea of writing words, but I like to connect writing with communicating, and math is ALL about communicating!
I also use #mathacognition developed by @ItsAMrY#masterychat
A2: I share my writing with students, whether it be in my notebook or on chart paper. I write what they write. Ex. Writing about reading from Raymond's Run using Writing Units of Study from #tcrwp#MasteryChat
A2 I share my own writing including my own struggles w/ writing.
Also, as a math teacher, Ss resist the idea of writing words, but I like to connect writing with communicating, and math is ALL about communicating!
I also use #mathacognition developed by @ItsAMrY#masterychat
I agree. Sitting next to students reading while I am reading, then stopping to ask...how is it going, what is going on in your book... Great stuff. #Masterychat
A2 - I think reading WITH students is huge (not aloud) but finding common thematic connections between what you are reading and the content is always a great way to engage them in the conversation! #masterychat
A2. Instead of novels or formal literature. Show kids how you read & react to current events, personal interests, & reading to teach yourself how 2 do something is valuable. 4 writing, I threw away every example provided by textbook & wrote own to relate with the Ss #MasteryChat
Me too! I found that it engages my students more because I am literally "in it" with them. Even if this is the fourth or fifth time I've read a book. #masterychat
A2: Here is how I bring my reading life into the room at the beginning of each school year. Note that my stacks are perfectly. . ."level." #MasteryChat
Once more. What's my level again? This weekend, I'm working through BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME, a Walt Kelly Anthology, Black Panther comics, a writing assessment source book, and assorted picture books. I get to read what I want (and need), why shouldn't my readers in #Room407?
I basically only PD books like @burgessdave books...so meant to list. Also just ordered two books last night. Thank Heaven for #AmazonPrime! I read lots of info on Twitter, and I’m also a @google that fanatic. Writing has not been a big priority. Sigh...
A1-reading, I like to keep it simple! I love mystery novels and quick reads. I read what I like! Writing, I’m in grad school, does that count? I recently started a blog, trying to put my thoughts out there #MasteryChat
A2 I read many different genres and provide many different texts as well. I make time everyday for reading. We're starting DEAR. We write in all 4 core areas such as ADI, math stories or problems, raps/songs, comics, stories, informational, etc. #masterychat
✨A1: Lofty goals for more reading and writing, but time keeps dancing away! This further validates that we need to provide students with time to read and write in our classrooms! Adults need it too! #MasteryChat✨
A2: I always keep a notebook with my students. Not only do they see me as a reader & writer with them, but can access it as a resource whenever they like. #tcrwp#MasteryChat
A2: I have a bookshelf of YA books that I have read in my classroom for SS to use and I keep what I am currently reading on my desk so SS can SS what I am reading. #MasteryChat
Q2: One awesome idea I have read about recently is to have a book stand up in the room displaying a current read that the teacher has enjoyed. I plan to do this with quality professional development reading in my office to model. #MasteryChat
A1: I’m an avid reader of a wide range of genres both fiction and non-fiction. I blog and write short stories and I’m piloting some picture bus for dementia patients. #MasteryChat
A2 I love to talk to my Ss about what I read, I talk about the Ed books and if they agree with the stuff inside, but I also talk about how I just read all of the Harry Potter books for the first time and how they should be required reading for all! #MasteryChat
A2 Oh I remember when the Twilight books came out and the high school girls were reading them at the same time I was! We couldn't wait to see each other in the hall and talk about what was happening! I love how excited they were to talk to me about books! #MasteryChat
A1: thanks to my friends @emilyfranESL@MissCoffey5 my love of reading was reignited this past year. Reading today’s YA novels have been like mini PDs educating me on cultures different from my own! #Masterychat
A2: I have students do several writing assignments in my history class. RAFT assignments are my favorite. Having students take on roles and participate in various forms of writing helps them do more than simple regurgitation. #masterychat
A2 - I write letters to students and the class. After they read the letters, I have them do Reflections about what they liked and how it applies to their life. Also, we always take time to read and write about topics that we love. #masterychat
A2b Everyday in my enrichment class we have a creative writing and I always share mine with them when they come in, to get their minds moving! #MasteryChat
Hi! Erin from Chariho HS (Rhode Island) checking in a bit late. I teach English but haven’t been an avid writer in my personal life... until the @TheRIWP Open Air Institute this summer! Looking forward to practicing this skill more WITH my Ss. #MasteryChat
A2: I consistently recommend YA Texts that I have or am currently reading. I connect our curriculum and units to texts as often as possible. #MasteryChat
A2- I tell my 1st and 2nd readers all about the novels I read once I've finished- they get comfy on the carpet while I take them through the story. They ask all sorts of questions and are always so curious- they end up being amazing conversations #masterychat
A2 - I write letters to students and the class. After they read the letters, I have them do Reflections about what they liked and how it applies to their life. Also, we always take time to read and write about topics that we love. #masterychat
Rich. 9th grade social studies in North Syracuse
A1 My Reading life goes in spurts but is on fire since discovering @dbc_inc books. Writing—I write small things all the time but doing more as I started a blog. #masterychat
A2: When it comes to non-teaching books, I look for mentor texts that model skills I want my Ss to develop (e.g., argumentative writing, analyzing cause/effect, etc.) If I ask my Ss to write in a new way, I am also doing that w/them & showing my thought process.
A2: Sharing what I’m reading with students, including YA and even picture bks. I want kids to know that reading is powerful and we shouldn’t be limited by levels or colors. #MasteryChat
A2: going to share my blogs with my ss, as 2 of them are abourmt own #passionproject and going to write a class blog for the first few weeks to show them how to do it on their own!! #masterychat
A1: I tend to be a binge reader, so when I get bogged down and busy I don't do it as much.
Writing is abit more consistent, I can do it bit by bit! #MasteryChat
A2-I’ve shown the students what I read for choice and my grad school reading to show Ss the different types of books and show I relate to choice in reading #MasteryChat
A2: Share my ♥️ of reading w/ them:
-Laminated sign in my room where I post what I'm currently reading for my Ss to see & start dialogue!
-Discuss books with Ss based on interests!
-Have a classroom library of science books and magazines!
*** Write DAILY!
#MasteryChat
A2: I share w/my Ss all the time what I am reading. I tell them the genres I love &that I am a sucker 4 a good romance which usually causes some groans 😂😂. Ive read many YA books so we talk books all the time &I love when they share a book 2me I haven't read yet. #MasteryChat
A2: I share my writing journey with kids. I write with them. Share struggles. Ask for help. Keep a visible record of what is published, working on, and new projects. #masterychat
A2 always share what I’m reading, learning. Lots of reading comprehension with real life content and news from Spanish speaking countries. We write stories, dialogues, poetry etc. Reading Writing Speaking and Listening are always the focus #MasteryChat
A2: I also quick-check myself (or at least note when I do it now) when the phrase, "Something I was reading just this weekend or last night" slips right into my share. The reading and what's being read just works into the vernacular. It's hard not to do this. #masterychat
A2: this year I want to make a “What We’re Reading” display that includes what I’m reading too! I want Ss to seem that reading is important to their teachers too and that you’re never too old to enjoy a book! #Masterychat
A2. I just brought my entire personal library into my classroom this year, hoping that my enthusiasm for my favorite novels will inspire my students to find their favorites! #MasteryChat
A2: Encouraging Ss to compose the genres with which they are the most familiar opens the class to reading and writing for authentic purposes. Ex: a business student who creates an online timeline to demonstrate the causes of the 2008 housing crisis. #Masterychat
A2: Our Learning & Innovation team plan to focus on writing this year. WE kicked the year off with writing PD and plan to have a Read like a /Write Like a (Mathematician, historian, engineer, scientist) series this year and next summer as part of our PD offerings #MasteryChat
A2: just make time and do not limit students from exploring their passions when it comes to different reading & writing styles. Personally, all subjects should incorporate both topics to reaffirm core fundamentals.
#MasteryChat
A2: my kid had Teacher who did Indy reading half hours and she would ALWAYS read a novel or some literature. It fascinated the kids.
Modeling
#MasteryChat
A2: when Ss are really interested in a set of books. I’ll read them during the school year with them so we can discuss during small group sessions. When reading PD books, I try to bring what I learned into the classroom. #masterychat
I have always ❤️ed to read. I read for own personal enjoyment, for professional learning & books my own kiddos & students are reading. Often carry 1 of my current reads with me. My own writing is mostly done via SM 😜 & co-constructing texts with my class. #MasteryChat
A2 - We do positive words of the day that all students must write about. Then we share responses with partners and they read what their friend wrote. Also, writing for students has to be fun. If they hate it, they’ll never do it well. #Masterychat
A2: Writing is almost easier bc so many ways to express learning and curiosity. One of the reasons I promote wonder walls to help Ss discover interests and questions worth answering. #masterychat
Q2: One awesome idea I have read about recently is to have a book stand up in the room displaying a current read that the teacher has enjoyed. I plan to do this with quality professional development reading in my office to model. #MasteryChat
A2: Student choice! Just as students select books and reading materials based on interests... Writing should be the same. Let them choose topics, modes, the audience. Even how they publish and share their work. The sky is the limit! 🚀 #MasteryChat
A2: When I taught mid school ELA, I read and wrote with my students. Harry Potter was big then & we’d all be buying the books 😜 Have to live it because they can smell inauthenticity a mile away #MasteryChat
A2. I share my own writing experiences in classroom. I used to teach scientific writing on the college level, which many Ss struggled with because they aren't used to writing in third person subjective! We need to teach it earlier to our Ss! #masterychat
A2. As an AP, I bring reading into the classroom by applying what I read. I keep a journal of books I’ve read with notes to review frequently. Today I reread notes on The Energy Bus when I felt we needed some positivity on campus #MasteryChat@JonGordon11
A1. I would like to say I’m active in both but haven’t been able to write as much.. Goal is to blog when my kids do! Want to tell my story just need to DO IT;) #MasteryChat
A2)I do make a point to talk about how I read and learn new things from my reading. I don't know that I bring my writing life into the classroom.Wait! Not true! I have written digital books for my class. I wrote this 2 years ago: https://t.co/GOj78On6F0#masterychat
A2: Now as an administrator I bring it to life by posting pics of my nightstand book stack, referencing books in meetings, and blogging frequently.
#masterychat
Hey all! I'm jumping in late. Stella from KY here. I am an instructional tech coordinator and I'm excited to learn with the fabulous @teresagross625 tonight. #masterychat
I think that it was from 180 Days - but I have part of my whiteboard reserved for what I just read, what I'm reading now, and what I'm reading next. Gives me great talking points about those weeks when you don't get to read much as compared to finding time #masterychat
#masterychat A2 As a math Tr my Ss write every Friday. I also have them create their own word problems and illustrate them. Last year when my book was accepted to be published my Ss were so excited, so... I made a "Story of Always Believe" wall that talks about the book.
When serving on an academic standards committee, we would ask a student who was petitioning to return from academic probation: What have you been reading? Great Q to assess the cognitive preparedness of a student. #Masterychat
A2 I have always talked about books I am reading or have read—even if they are edu books...I share things because I want to model that adults read & reflect. I stress writing but need to do a better job—this year I’m going to have Ss write regular reflection letters #MasteryChat
Biggest way is actually sharing with my students what I’m reading and what I’m learning from it via social media. Same w/writing. BUT ALSO encouraging my students to write and record as well! #MasteryChat
A1 - I consume books, from as long as I can remember I would check 10 books out at a time, I escape in my reading. I am a storyteller, I love telling stories about what I experience, share others experiences , one day I will write a book! #MasteryChat
Yes, that idea is in there! I have been lucky enough to attend several workshops w/@KellyGToGo & @pennykittle. They always have so many great ideas like that one! #masterychat
In reply to
@BrysonBridget, @teresagross625, @KellyGToGo, @pennykittle
A2: I loved bringing @newsela in and then having the students reflect through writing with those articles. I usually would give them choice on reflection: Comic, story book with slides, writing an essay, etc. #masterychat
I like the idea of doing it when kids do. Sends a powerful message about the importance of telling your story, and also shows how real the process is #masterychat
A2 In science communication is a key goal! Scientists have to be able to communicate their findings both verbally and in writing. I will be using Flipgrid to do more post lab reflections to hit this harder!
#masterychat
A2 I haven't before as I always have taught science. This year I'm reading The Martian to my science 10 class in honor of our #GameMyClass (@MrHebertPE )and stories about mathematicians to my math 8 kids #MasteryChat
A2: When I taught mid school ELA, I read and wrote with my students. Harry Potter was big then & we’d all be buying the books 😜 Have to live it because they can smell inauthenticity a mile away #MasteryChat
A3: Students don't do well with-Do as I say, not as I do... We need to live the importance of the act and art of reading and writing with them. Validate! #Masterychat
#masterychat a1 I pretty much revolve through a teacher text, then a free choice, like a thriller, then a #YA book and #PictureBooks It keeps it from being too hard or too samey, samey. I read a LOT
My schools accepts a teaching credential from your state, or master's I teach reading, writing, math, with social studies and some science integrated. #masterychat
A2. During Silent reading I read with the kids & when we blog I Plan to blog with my kids;) I have this up in my room to showcase to kids what I’m reading;) #MasteryChat#leadwithliteracy@mandyeellis
A3: If we always show students finished pieces of writing, they think we can do something they cannot. Thank you @LisaEickholdt ! When we participate with them, they see us going through the process as well and how we think. #MasteryChat
A3: it’s great to show reading and writing can be enjoyable! It’s not only for learning, it’s to be entertained. I love finding fun books and reading to the Ss just because it’s a fun book to read. I #MasteryChat
A3: "Hey students, I'm doing what you are doing. Sometimes it's hard. Sometimes I struggle. But here's what I have learned. What have you learned? Was that book/draft awful? No, you're not wrong or dumb. Let's talk about it and find solutions."
#masterychat
A2 - We do positive words of the day that all students must write about. Then we share responses with partners and they read what their friend wrote. Also, writing for students has to be fun. If they hate it, they’ll never do it well. #Masterychat
A3: Ss need to see that reading/writing isn’t just a “school” thing. It’s a life skill that inspires, educates, fulfills.. if we just tell them to do it, it’s a compliance task. #masterychat
A2: make the writing part of some other kind of output - like a video. Then there is context and a process. Also makes it easier to think of audience because the writing supports what will eventually be a a sensory output. So you get empathetic and authentic work
#MasteryChat
A3 I feel Ss don’t see reading and writing modeled enough on the real world—they think it’s something limited to school or work—it’s important that they learn its important to make them well rounded people. #MasteryChat
A3 because in books they can find connections that can validate who they are when they might otherwise questions, escape or visit the world outside of their street. Reading and writing helps them find and share their voice, handle emotions, and grow as individuals. #masterychat
A3: We all have more to learn. And we all have a voice. Students need to see that it’s ok to not know everything, but they still have so much to offer.
And if they don’t find themselves in a book, maybe that’s exactly what they NEED to write about. #MasteryChat
A3 All professionals should strive to be current in their field, so keep up on readings in important to model. I like to take 5 minutes to talk about current events and read short articles when they have a connection. Science literacy is important for ALL. #MasteryChat
A2 - I bring books I enjoy into the classroom to share with my Ss, as well as providing them popular books that they might read for fun. I enpower my Ss to tell their story, they write some very powerful narratives #MasteryChat
A3 - This goes for all topics. Reading and writing are universal for learning. I model writing all the time and read something every class to students. Kids will always model what they see and hear. It’s about being passionate about the topics. #masterychat
A3: When Ss see that Ts take risks as readers and writers, they may be willing to take their own risks in those areas. Talking through our own problem solving process can equip Ss with similar skills when they approach similar tasks. #masterychat
A3 I think what is more important is sharing with them how we are readers and writers on a journey. Showing them how we grow and change over time is a better model than simply showing them we read and write. #masterychat
A3: It is important to show Ss we are readers/writing to show them that learning never stops. Reading and writing (no matter what it is) is always a form of new learning. I am and will always be a learner. I want that for my students. #masterychat
A2 Sorry a bit late. I share the books I read with my Ss and Ts. Read to classrooms and take part of book studies with Ts. I also share my writing with Staff through a weekly blog. I want to do more book talks with Ss through Flipgrid, goal of mine. #masterychat
Q3 by letting our students know what we are reading, especially when it relates to what we are teaching, it lets them know it's cool to want to know more about it. #MasteryChat
A3: I struggle as a writer because my thoughts are usually jumbled. I like to model to kids how I brainstorm (usually the good old fashioned web!). I think showing them my "scattered" thoughts and then how I overcome that helps motivate them to try. #masterychat
A3: ❤️ this question. Think about the people you look up to most in your life. Often we’ll alter our behavior based on what we see those people doing. Ss often look up to us & seeing us genuinely enjoy reading can alter how they see reading/writing #Masterychat
A3. Showing your authentic humility to your students is an equalizing and empowering action! Proves to all students that learning is a life-long journey 💡 #MasteryChat
A3: Ss need to know writing isn’t always a grinding task but then we need to do better to design activities that offer flexibility in how they write so they can explore voice and style. #masterychat
Makes me think... what if we added our current reading on our email signature line... would that promote a culture of reading and learning amongst our peers? #masterychat
A3 Like anything it is important that Ts model a healthy learning life When we read/write we show Ss the relevancy of those two aspects in life #masterychat
Reminds me of my own kids! My 2 year old sees me and his older siblings read, so he picks up the book and picture walks. My oldest who is almost 6 sees me using my post its and told me he needs to "write it on a post it" the other day. Kids will do what is modeled. #MasteryChat
A3: I find it helpful to make my thinking visible and explain my choices, my difficulties, my celebrations, etc. Also what I do when I get "stuck". It allows them to see a model, as well as build their toolbox of strategies. #MasteryChat
Biggest way is actually sharing with my students what I’m reading and what I’m learning from it via social media. Same w/writing. BUT ALSO encouraging my students to write and record as well! #MasteryChat
A2: We have a ‘currently reading’ display in the classroom which everyone, including me, contributes to, & I always have a recommendation on one of the stands below which are displayed around the room. I write my own texts at the same time as the students & share. #MasteryChat
Yes, absolutely. Reading and writing need to be taught in all content areas so Ss see how these skills transfer beyond subject-area boundaries. #masterychat
A3 model life long learning. Knowledge is power and sometimes knowledge about insignificant things can bring laughter and spark conversation #MasteryChat
A2: I like to write notes to individual Ss. They think it’s awesome to get one. teacher. I’m excited about a new writing program we are trying, Developing Strategic Writers through Genre Instruction: Resources for Grades 3–5 by Zoi A. Philippakos. #MasteryChat
A3: Sharing our reading and writing is the best way to demonstrate--with earnest and authenticity--that this is "WE-DO" work. This is important work that WE do. All year long. Together. Independently. Shared responsibilities. Shared reflections. Everybody in. #masterychat
A3: Reading promotes empathy in that the reader learns to identify with the character or writer. Important for our Ss to develop this empathy today & into their futures. Writing provides agency in that they learn to advocate for themselves through the power of words #Masterychat
A3: It shows students the we practice what we teach. It is much more motivating to learn from someone who is actively pursuing what they are teaching. #masterychat
A3 Students need to realize reading and writing are life skills. They also need to understand that the adults in their life are always learning 😀 #lifelonglearner#masterychat
A3 We are creating learners! That means we need to model how we learn! Reading, writing, taking ideas and putting them into practice. Failing, reflecting and learning! #MasteryChat
Students look up to their teachers. When my own daughter saw me reading by the pool this summer and she would dry off and get her own book to join. #MasteryChat
A1 just recently got back into reading. I have 3-4 books going right now, all PD. also participate in research block for my position at work. I've starting blogging too. I do feel like I need a more organized routine for it all though #MasteryChat
A3: it provides an important connection. It allows the Ss to see me as a geek who loves to read and is proud of it. By putting my love of books out there they often want to impress me with their reading whether they have struggled in the past or excelled. #MasteryChat
A3: When students see that we value reading and writing, including giving them time to independent read and write, it can have a positive impact on how they view themselves as readers and writers. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A3 One of my favorite days is #ReadAcrossAmericaDay I read a story from my book about me getting bullied in 6th grade. The kids LOVE IT! Most of the time they applaud at the end. #RelationshipBuilder Ss at my school are really excited abou my upcoming book.
Hello from Rio Hondo, Texas! Jennifer Alfaro here 👋Currently teaching Biology, Chemistry, A&P, & Biomedical Science. 14 yrs in ed, 9 in science 🔬 Checking into #MasteryChat
A2: I’m currently writing a book, and I’m taking my Ss through the editing process. We talk about my successes and failures along the way. #MasteryChat
A3 - I think showing them the importance of their story and how impactful it can be, why reading other’s stories can give us perspective; how telling our own can make us relatable #MasteryChat
Yes - life is not a 5 paragraph essay of 500 words. It’s complex and context specific. They should be writing blog posts, emails, technical directions, product reviews, etc #masterychat
A3 Like all things we shouldn’t ask Ss to do things we aren’t willing to do ourselves. We must model what we ask of them! Show them not just ask them. Plus, how can you be the best for them if you aren’t learning and perfecting your craft daily? #masterychat
Reading and writing are deeply connected to every field of study. Every human interaction. Every investigation and communication! I love helping them see this! #masterychat
I make sure to point out, this is a fun book I’d thought you’d enjoy. I don’t make a teachable moment out of expect for, reading can be fun! #MasteryChat
Important to note that our Ss are right now readers and writers. They do not need a classroom in which to exercise these powers. Life is their classroom. #Masterychat
A3: YES! When we say that "reading and writing are life skills." Students do not automatically believe us. We have to show them what that means and WHY it's important. We also need to incorporate Ss choice into reading. #masterychat
A3 Students need to realize reading and writing are life skills. They also need to understand that the adults in their life are always learning 😀 #lifelonglearner#masterychat
I don't think this tweet made it: sometimes I write digital books for my class. This one I wrote about 2 years ago: https://t.co/GOj78On6F0#masterychat
A3: They see the value and lasting impact of writing and learning. When I share what I'm reading or talk about my blog, it shows them that these are skills and gifts that don't go away. #masterychat
A3b - When I discuss reading and writing it’s always framed as a way to enhance their life. Rarely is it about a grade or number. We should focus on growing a love both. #Masterychat
A3: Reading promotes empathy in that the reader learns to identify with the character or writer. Important for our Ss to develop this empathy today & into their futures. Writing provides agency in that they learn to advocate for themselves through the power of words #Masterychat
A3 Students need to realize reading and writing are life skills. They also need to understand that the adults in their life are always learning 😀 #lifelonglearner#masterychat
#masterychat a2 'We had a what did you read over summer?' digital and it was interesting because the picture of the person, showed. Kids don't get to see adults reading necessarily, this made it part of normal life, along with DYI. #Reading
A3. I had a college professor which made us read our papers into a tape recorder to distinguish how to punctuate the sentences! It's important to work with our Ss on both reading/writing! Practicing, encouraging, and devloping the love of the subject matter! #masterychat
Hey everyone! I'm a college sophomore studying to be an elementary education teacher with a concentration in reading. This is my first time in this chat. Any tips for me in general when it's reading time or writing time? #masterychat#EDW200
A3: I think it’s vital to convey our joy in something to ignite that same passion in students. It’s also a way to connect with them & build meaningful relationships. Not to mention the important learning that occurs when we ‘think aloud’ while reading & writing. #MasteryChat
When I was 6 I told my Ts I couldn’t read (but I could). My mom asked me why and I said I couldn’t read the big books she had in her room. (Prob a good thing since they were romance novels 😂) #masterychat
A2
☠️ 📚 ☠️ 📚 ☠️ 📚 ☠️📚 ☠️ 📚
When you read, I read, we read! ☠️ 📚 ☠️ 📚 ☠️ 📚 ☠️📚 ☠️ 📚
My Ss are well aware of how into @dbc_inc books I am! They’ve even picked up on the inspiration for the giant maze in the back of the room! #MasteryChat#TLAP#XPLAP
A3 - I think showing them the importance of their story and how impactful it can be, why reading other’s stories can give us perspective; how telling our own can make us relatable #MasteryChat
A3: More than hyperbole. This is fact. I'm the ONLY male English teacher students will have had since they started switching classes specifically to do ELA work. For this, I get to be a reading mentor for many of these students, male and female. Mr. Hankins = reader. #masterychat
Welcome! So glad you are joining us tonight. :)
I think one important idea to consider is that reading and writing time are not necessarily reading and writing time! All learning involves reading &writing, so I always try to infuse it within and with other subjects!
#MasteryChat
When I was in my leadership classes, I would share my writing struggles and how I take what I learn to make my writing more engaging authentic.
A3+ the best part about being an avid reader and following authors on Twitter is being retweeted by a revered author. @se4realhinton retweeted me and I'm still on cloud nine - months later!! Imagine how our students feel! #MasteryChat
Important to note that our Ss are right now readers and writers. They do not need a classroom in which to exercise these powers. Life is their classroom. #Masterychat
Hey everyone! I'm a college sophomore studying to be an elementary education teacher with a concentration in reading. This is my first time in this chat. Any tips for me in general when it's reading time or writing time? #masterychat#EDW200
International schools will often recruit through job fairs. However, when teachers are interested in a specific school, they can contact a principal directly. #masterychat
#masterychat a1 - I am *constantly* reading. This summer I went a little overboard with PD books. I LOVE forensic mysteries as a personal choice. I'm HUGE on audiobooks. Writing is pretty non-existent.
A1: I’ve definitely learned a lot professionally this summer from reading suggested books. Writing is more of a “when necessary” thing, but I would like to get back into journaling. #MasteryChat
Hey everyone! I'm a college sophomore studying to be an elementary education teacher with a concentration in reading. This is my first time in this chat. Any tips for me in general when it's reading time or writing time? #masterychat#EDW200
A4: They choose their independent reading books. I offer choices related to units/curriculum, if we do book clubs I give them a choice of text. The more choice Ss have, the more engaged they become. #MasteryChat
A4: I will say the way NOT to do it is to depend on AR to be the independent reading police. Like book club, give time to authentically share books/writings. Have places to post recommendations. Encourage new ideas. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A4 I strongly believe Ss should wirte in EVERY class at least once a week. If the Tr shows to the Ss that is important they WILL buy in and write with #MorePower
A4: I hope to create a community of readers and writers who are flexible, respectful and supportive.
This means a lot of "nobody's wrong" and emphasizing the joy of learning in the process.
#MasteryChat
A4: I think a great way to build a community of readers and writers in any class is to provide authentic venues for Ss to share their work (e.g., community projects, blogs, videos, etc.) Give Ss opps. to see how using those skills can help them be informed citizens. #masterychat
A3: I can introduce students to @MrSchuReads and @colbysharp and @aschoenborn and @mrbgilson and so many who model this kind of active reading with students. But I'm the one they are going to see every day. I point to these guys. But, I'm the guy on point in #Room407#masterychat
In reply to
@MrSchuReads, @colbysharp, @aschoenborn, @mrbgilson
Thanks to @jmarangell I've been implementing workshops in my classroom for a couple years now. It has slowed down Ss process while reading/writing so that they can focus on a positive experience. It lets them review, revise, talk, write, read, and repeat. #masterychat
A4: We read A LOT. We read silently, I read aloud, we read in partners and in small groups. I've always believed you become a better reader by reading. So we read. Nothing will replace reading. #MasteryChat
I open math workshop with a read aloud (a math book, but a book nonetheless). I also include math stories for Ss to write during our math centers. #masterychat
A3:
Be OPEN to letting students read without restrictions! As adults no one tells us what to read, how long to read, or what to write before, during, or after we read! Let students see you read solely for the love of reading, and then let them do the same! #MasteryChat
✨❤️📚
A4: When we read and write in front of students, we are modeling how important they are, demonstrating that reading and writing have different purposes, and expressing that they can be fun and entertaining! #MasteryChat
A4: Create a safety net where students get to know one another and respect each other. Peer editing/revising/conferencing/reading. Collaborationist key! #MasteryChat
A4 - We make reading and writing a daily habit. But the topics are chosen frequently by students. Also, there is rarely a guide as to how much. I want kids to explore and take their time. Placing parameters on them only makes it seem like work. #masterychat
The book is just getting stared, so they are seeing the entire process in action. It will be even better once the comments start coming in from my editor 😲 #MasteryChat
Every single week, #Masterychat feels like a warm hug embracing me and supporting me through the joys and trials of my journey. Truly brings tears to my eyes. Thank you so much!
A3: I think it's a "practice what you preach" thing! I can't just tell them the importance of reading/writing and that it's a lifelong skill/passion...I need to show them! #MasteryChat
A4: Thanks to @jmarangell I've been implementing workshops in my classroom for a couple years now. It has slowed down Ss process while reading/writing so that they can focus on a positive experience. It lets them review, revise, talk, write, read, and repeat. #masterychat
A4: Flexible seating has been a focus for me over the past few years. Allowing Ss to have choice and be comfortable in their learning environment. Thank you to @DonorsChoose for the big pillows! #MasteryChat
A4 Math is a subject that requires collaboration to growth. In my math class I try my best to create better mathematical communicators! Reading and writing are means of communicating what we know! Mathematical literacy is so important! #MasteryChat
A2: I utilize a lot of what I read (more professional best practices & random facts to share w/Ss). Writing hasn’t had to be incorporated as much BUT I‘ve learned that being as precise as possible is key when “mentally writing” my LPs b/c of the age group I teach. #MasteryChat
A4 Provide lots of choice in books and kids current hits helps with engagement 😀 Many of my students are reluctant writers however ☹️ so I address that with speech to text sometimes and they will write. Script to record in @Flipgrid#masterychat
I love being able to say oh I think so and so read that, or having them keep a list of our reading life to refer to. It warms my heart to hear them making and asking for recommendations from each other. #masterychat
A4: I will say the way NOT to do it is to depend on AR to be the independent reading police. Like book club, give time to authentically share books/writings. Have places to post recommendations. Encourage new ideas. #MasteryChat
A4 I build a community of readers and writers by sharing the joy of both of them😊 Our school shares book tasting across grade levels and with families. #Masterychat
A4. When I taught 4th grade, I created book bins for each student before school started with 7 books each. I used the previous year’s data to get reading levels and included nonfictions books on popular topics. My students read more that yet than ever before. #masterychat
We need to incorporate the ss interest into the subject matter for both reading and writing! The more interested in the subject matter, the more engaged they become!Do it with unique opportunities in writing which allow for their imagination, creativity, dreams, etc. #masterychat
A4: So much of reading/writing in academic settings is performed in a vacuum — a solitary student writes for a lone instructor who is the primary audience and also the judge of the product’s value. This must change. Ss should be writing for authentic audiences. #Masterychat
A4: Ss pick their own books and change once a week if they like. They can create recommendations ad rate the books they read. We also do novel Read alouds which we talk about lots and I share how I love the books we read #masterychat
A4 whenever I “catch” someone reading during Spanish, instead of telling a kid to put it away, I celebrate their love of reading and ask them to share what they are reading. In Spanish of course! Great opportunity I get to know kids and their interests. #MasteryChat
I have started giving several options for book talks. Many of them love the video! They plan out a script and add music and really make it come to life! #masterychat
A4: We write in some capacity (bell ringers, journaling, research, etc) daily!
I have a class library of magazines and books!
We'll read a book in class in Forensics Spring semester.
Biology will do a book report over SciFi or SciNonFi.
#MasteryChat
A4: By making all types of genres accessible to Ss. It’s important to show a love for reading. Have Ss journal their thoughts and ideas, so they can reflect when they begin writing. #masterychat
A4: I’d love to see bulletin boards not just be polished work, but clipboards of works in progress with post-it’s so ppl can provide encouragement/feedback/edits. Make the room part of the process #MasteryChat
A4: Biggest thing I’ve done this year is to make time in our busy schedule for students to read books of their own choosing & to read for the simple pleasure of reading, every day! I also ensure our classroom library has books they want to read. Most popular atm? #MasteryChat
A4: As a school, we adopted the DEAR strategy: Drop Everything And Read, for 20 minutes every Friday. @SSCMSStallions#MasteryChat The SS are loving it!
Important to note that our Ss are right now readers and writers. They do not need a classroom in which to exercise these powers. Life is their classroom. #Masterychat
A1. I can always read more. I am working on my dissertation so most of my writing is there, but like our moderator, I find time to write #StoriesInEDU on occassion. #masterychat
A4: Keeping "fun" materials is a great way to build a community together. Ss have access to a variety of writing utensils, post-it notes, etc. as we proceed through the year together as readers, writers, learners, teachers, etc. #MasteryChat
A4 I take interest in what they are reading and writing in class and outside of class. I’m intentional in my attention to it so it makes it a positive. #MasteryChat
#masterychat a3 L2 or Bilingualism means for us another way to learn things, it builds on L1, esp if L1 has missed the point. In Auslan it's great for listing facts and Chinese is magic for numbers for example.
#deafed#deafgain
A3 - The writing we do in our narratives are deeply personal, I let Ss decide if they want to share or not, usually they are excited to share. I want to help them find a way to showcase it while granting them anonymity #MasteryChat
A4: Make the writing relevant. Today we summarized a video using 140 characters or less (I’m old school). Great precise language and revision exercise. #MasteryChat
A3: Ss look to us a leaders. It’s important to show them the importance of reading and writing so they can become well rounded. It helps to be excited when teaching reading and writing techniques to Ss. #masterychat
A4.2 Modeling moves from teacher to S. They have the opportunity to share books read and pieces written. Scaffolded experiences and rigorous expectations help. My Ss are eager to complete the yr long rdg project.
A4: Build a classroom culture where reading and writing are expectations...and not just during a language arts “block”. We read in math. We write in science. We read & write for so many purposes. It’s how we get through our day. ✍️📖 #MasteryChat
I often think about that..... every time i read something I don't have to actually do something with it.....usually I give a summary for others. So, let the Ss do that too! #masterychat
A4 By providing lots of opportunity to do both in all areas, comfortable seating, variety of and lots of books, different tools for writing (typing, pen, gel pens, etc.) I read with them daily and now I get to stop and read beside them. #masterychat
A3: My Ss will learn firsthand this year just how important writing is. Recent writing w/my teaching partner successfully secured a large grant award for our dept to receive BreakoutEdu kits & new iPads. You never know when great writing skills will pay off in life. #MasteryChat
A4: Our book talk isn't finished until we've asked the question, "Who is the reader for this good book?" Rarely do I put a book back on display or on the shelf. Almost always in the hands of the reader that was meant in the moment for that book that was just shared. #masterychat
A4: I consider my walls "living". Consistently showcasing skills and strategies we are learning, examples of writing, etc. that change as the year goes on. Ss always have access to resources. #MasteryChat
A2: I collaborate with teachers to see what topics they are reading, researching, or writing about to incorporate in their STEAM lesson to help make it more purposeful. #masterychat
Have you used @Flipgrid for that? I have seen teachers create open "topics" for book talks and leave it open for Ss to add their videos after reading. Sounds like a great idea! I love how your Ss add music to their videos to give them personal touches! #masterychat
Microblogging, blogging, and creating podcasts are deeply rooted in the writing process and are relevant to the lives of our students. Great modes to teach to help Ss amplify their voices. #masterychat
A4: Make the writing relevant. Today we summarized a video using 140 characters or less (I’m old school). Great precise language and revision exercise. #MasteryChat
A4: Build a classroom culture where reading and writing are expectations...and not just during a language arts “block”. We read in math. We write in science. We read & write for so many purposes. It’s how we get through our day. ✍️📖 #MasteryChat
A4: I think students have to have choice in what they read and write. Most importantly, reading and writing should not be the task. They should be a vehicle they use to find solutions to problems, to apply their knowledge, etc. #MasteryChat
Yes! Isn’t that how we discover books? Recommendations? Even if it’s just the B&N shelf w/books highlighted, Ss need that too. No adult picks a book based on lexile level 🙄 #masterychat
Every single week, #Masterychat feels like a warm hug embracing me and supporting me through the joys and trials of my journey. Truly brings tears to my eyes. Thank you so much!
Model model model- #flexibleseating because when u are comfortable you are more productive! Empower my kids to share and present what they read or wrote, Skype with authors! Book Raffle every Friday! #MasteryChat
Q4 Making students accountable and including them in the process of their learning is priceless! For example, let them help create rubrics, let them self grade and let them reflect!!!!! #MasteryChat
A3: it’s important to show my students that I’m a reader/writer, because if I want to make them value something, why would I not practice those things myself? Kids see through being fake! #masterychat
A3) I believe we, as educators, must demonstrate learning in general as a way of life as opposed to a phase in their lives. This could change the way they perceive schooling completely...ideally :) #MasteryChat
A4: I LOVE my buddy @hayes_melisa who sent me a wonderful text which is being shared with my Ss. Seeing friends share books w/ friends shows them gifting books can make the heart full! #MasteryChat
Interesting community-building exercise — having Ss write letters to incoming Ss about how to be successful in the course and how to extract the most meaning out of the academic experience. Peer-to-peer instruction at its best. #Masterychat
A4: My 9th graders have the first 15 (of 80) minutes each day to read (goal of one novel every 20 days). I have built my classroom library. I need to do better to encourage conversations, but they have been informally recommending books to each other. #Masterychat
A3 - Credibility. We can’t tell students that reading and writing are important unless we do them and do them well. I cringe whenever I hear a teacher say, “I don’t read.” #MasteryChat
A4 whenever I “catch” someone reading during Spanish, instead of telling a kid to put it away, I celebrate their love of reading and ask them to share what they are reading. In Spanish of course! Great opportunity I get to know kids and their interests. #MasteryChat
Great point. I expect students to read a minimum of seven books from different genres over the course of the year. I ask that they share opinions with another classmate for all seven but only need to lead a whole class chat for 2. #Masterychat
Students often love creating multimedia presentations of their understanding! It's also why I really like @flipgrid. I've done book talks before on Flipgrid that went really well! #masterychat
In reply to
@teresagross625, @jmarangell, @Flipgrid
A4: I model reading for my Ss with storybook read-alouds which tie into our curriculum. Writing tends to focus more on doing so as composers, but I incorporate spoken phrasing to model understanding musical phrasing, questions, & endings. #MasteryChat
A4: this year I teach 1-1. Only 6 students. Whether math, science or Spanish, there is always something to read. I started with authentic Spanish articles with S interests in mind. Lots of hand-on for geometry and science with reading, too. #MasteryChat
A4 as a school we make reading a big deal. We make IRT a priority, have family reading nights, battle of the books, k-6 book clubs, and our teachers talk about books all the time! We do need to do better with writing so always looking for ideas.#masterychat
Years ago, I had my Ss create videos to this effect on the last day of class, and they all got so creative--even creating short skits to illustrate their points. Remember that, @Lindsaygw9?! We should bring that back! #masterychat
A4: my kids bring home some truly terrible and contrived “newspapers” designed for kids. They are right through it and the comprehension questions: interest killers.
Gotta get away from this inauthentic and regimented approach
#MasteryChat
A4
SEE IT THEIR WAY!
😎📚😎📚😎📚😎
Give students choice and time! Make the environment cozy and comfortable, and let them read in any way they see fit (audio book, kindle, regular book, or any combo of those!) #MasteryChat
A5 - Show them in small steps how they have the ability to be creative and expressive! Sometimes its the length of writing that becomes daunting. Allowing them to show their expressiveness in other ways before writing can also help! #masterychat
A3 I read aloud to my Ss when I was in the classroom. Even though I was a science teacher I loved starting class by reading a few pages from a good book! I remember reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH and then sparking conversations about animal research #MasteryChat
Super late to this, but I’ve loved reading everyone’s insights! I teach 9th grade government in Missouri. Looking for innovative ways to better engage some of my struggling readers! #MasteryChat
A5: Having Ss help organize the book corner is a great way to immerse them in books. I often have Ss pull out books as they are going through them that look interesting. #MasteryChat
A5: Ss sometimes believe reading and writing have to be this perfect-in-one-go experience which is why sharing struggles and strategies is so valuable.
"I'm not a reader" is a cover for "I haven't found the right book yet."
#masterychat
A5: It sounds silly but I remind them that if they can read/write, they are a reader/writer. They may just need more practice and help to be a more successful reader/writer. That's worked a lot for me 🤷♀️ #masterychat
A5: I feel like every student has an earnest desire to find a book that they can resonate with. I think that some of our students just haven't found the right book yet. I also want my students to share out their story and not be afraid to let their beauty shine, #masterychat
A5) My Ss r not reading words at the beginning of the year. We learn we can read words, pictures, & retell stories (The Daily 5). They choose books of interest, begin to engage w/them in ways they can, & that seems to naturally bring out a love of reading. #masterychat
A5: I think we need to help them start at their level, but keeping the focus on keeping their interest. Even if they start with small steps, we have to genuinely celebrate their successes. #MasteryChat
A5 Ask them their interest and then hit the library! Show them there are tons of different reading material about their exact interest including books! #masterychat
A5: I feel like every student has an earnest desire to find a book that they can resonate with. I think that some of our students just haven't found the right book yet. I also want my students to share out their story and not be afraid to let their beauty shine. #masterychat
Finding what a student is passionate about is important. Once you can identify a "drive" the literacy components can be connected. If there is no love of literacy the challenge is greater. Surveys and interest inventories work great for this!!!#MasteryChat
Love. Being. Here. For. Educators.
If I can make any single person's day a little brighter by connecting with them in some way, I am a happy human. #masterychat
In reply to
@MsJachymiak, @RaeHughart, @chadostrowski, @jeffgargas
A5: in first we bring attention to reading pictures to build Ss confidence and enjoyment. Stress not letting words get in the way. Same with writing-show wordless books and how it can still tell a story. #MasteryChat
A5 - A book is more than just words, it tells a story, it has a purpose. We start with an outline, pictures, sketches. Because my Ss enjoy graphic novels, they should be given the choice to write their own graphic novel. Tap into your Ss interests #MasteryChat
A5 Not every S will see themselves as a reader or writer and we do not have to make them love it but we need to build their skills, expand their horizons, & bld confidence. Playful exploration connected to academic rigor matching their interests to the subject. #masterychat
A5: Some Ss view reading/writing in traditional/academic sense only. Show them other ways - read & write tweets, posts, poems, stats, articles, lyrics, game directions, etc. We need to value it in all forms, and convey that value to Ss. #masterychat
A4. We write up our laboratory experiment results and the Ss will write in several parts and descriptions from observations, data, hypothesis, results, discussion, summary, etc. Reading for information, background data or history, researching, etc. #masterychat
A5: Find books or topics that interest them, let them listen to an audio version, let him/her read with a friend. Meet with them often, maybe even read aloud to them some chapters and model how to love it. Offer options. Give them choice and voice in their learning #MasteryChat
A5:
Provide opportunities for practice often!
Praise the process and the progress!
Build relationships so you can have open and honest conversation!
Preach/practice growth mindset and model it!
#MasteryChat
A5: Speed Book Browsing is another fantastic way to have Ss peruse books in a social way. They have the opportunity to preview many books in a short amount of time. #MasteryChat
A5 It is important that build relationships w/ Ss to help them build confidence and to help find what interests them. TEDTalks & lunches w/ the teacher are a great way to initiate that. #MasteryChat
A5: Get to know your students. As you know their interests you can recommend things for them to check out (and read!), you could ask them to send you an email after the finish reading it about their thoughts. Then in class give specific praise to what they wrote. #masterychat
A5) My Ss r not reading words at the beginning of the year. We learn we can read words, pictures, & retell stories (The Daily 5). They choose books of interest, begin to engage w/them in ways they can, & that seems to naturally bring out a love of reading. #masterychat
A5: Create a safe place for the student to exercise these skills. The worst thing we could do is apply assessment to the struggling student. Instead, allow the student to decide when assessment is appropriate or when he/she feels confident enough. #Masterychat
A5 Make time for low stakes reading and writing!
-creative writing prompts
-writing tweet summaries/statuses/Instagram captions
-Having a variety of reading materials, novels, biographies, graphic novels, comics!
#MasteryChat
A5: we all start somewhere. Read what you can and write what you can now, but challenge yourself to do a bit more and a bit better next time. Jumping in sooo late from Texas!! #MasteryChat
A5 Show them reading/writing in diff forms Not all reading has to be a novel, not all writing has to be a essay Reading & writing can take on diff forms that connect w/a student likes #MasteryChat
A5 Expose them to as many genres as possible. But also, I feel that Ss feel that writers are only people who right big books. I don't think they realize that jokes, raps, songs, short stories, poetry, etc. are all writing. #masterychat
I just got (and read) a copy of MEMPHIS, MARTIN, AND THE MOUNTAINTOP: THE SANITATION STRIKE OF 1968 by Alice Fay Duncan with illustrations by R. Gregory Christie. Based upon a real-life experience. Picture book, yes! Rich back matter. Connection-to-Other-Text-Ready. #MasteryChat
A4 I think writing in journals reading aloud sharing interests talking about books newspapers journals magazines my Ss always kept a journal about labs wrote lab reports and then read them out loud to one another they also wrote reflections about labs and results #MasteryChat
A4 Students’ choice of novels can solve so many problems we have in getting students to read. If we let students enjoy reading and discussing books, instead of attaching more work to them, maybe we’ll have readers in our classes. #MasteryChat
I really am trying to help them see that sharing their voice via social media is a form of writing and expression that cannot be overlooked. It’s the getting them to actually write/share that’s the hardest part 😅 #MasteryChat
A5: To quote @pennykittle, "Interest trumps reading level!" If Ss are hesitant to read, or doubtful of their skills, guide them to texts that appeal to them personally. When they are successful w/those, they will be more confident in branching out to other genres. #masterychat
A5 I’m planning on using loose parts for writing, where students write their parts on post it notes. It’s easier to rearrange, edit and revise in bits 😀 Not an overwhelming task to rewrite (my S’s are special needs) #masterychat
A5: Modeling the mistakes is key. More specifically, bringing your thought process to the forefront as a think-aloud for modeling. As adults we resolve problems in our heads. Ss don’t always know HOW. Thinking aloud teaches them the skills to be more successful. #MasteryChat
I had a Ss who had difficult time with reading and writing. However, he loved comic books. I found a collection of graphic novels for him to read, from fiction to nonfiction. He started his writing using Google slides, which turned into 5 paragraphs. #masterychat
A5: I’m teaching a same group of 4 boys that I had last year. I keep showing them how much they have grown. They are transitioning from decoding words to reading multi syllable words. They keep having ah ha moments. Makes me tear up with happiness. #masterychat
A5: Allowing Ss to teach or share their writing with others empowers them to be the teachers. Some have been pleasantly surprised when I have asked to share their work! (Note: I always ask before I share. Some have politely told me, no thank you, and I respect that.) #MasteryChat
Finding "that" book for every student is a great adventure to share with students! Very fortunate to have a large classroom library to help with that adventure. #masterychat
A5: For some students, it helped to start by telling a story...especially if they felt an emotional connection. Once they had time to share it aloud, they started to think about how they could write the same details and descriptions.
🎤➡️📝 #MasteryChat
A5.5: "You are too a writer!"
T: Do you eat pickled pig's feet?
S: No.
T: Yet the store manager still has it on the shelf. Know why?
S: Why?
T: Because it will appeal to someone's tastes.
S: What does that mean for me?
T: It means you should write for that someone.
#masterychat
A5: Relationships build readers and writers. Both require risk taking and students need a safe environment where they feel encouraged and supported by Ts and classmates. #MasteryChat
A5 - Never focus on the end product with students who lack confidence. Focus on the positive steps they take and provide feedback that promotes getting a little better each time. Also, give them choices. #masterychat
A5. I like to tell my kiddo “I know exactly how you feel! I am very uneasy & self conscious about Art.” Then I ask my kiddo to teach me how 2 draw 2?build my self confidence & in return I will build his/her confidence in reading & writing! It’s a win win! #MasteryChat#family
A5: We also need to recognize that Ss don’t have to ❤️ reading/writing, but they do need to be proficient in it for life success. So don’t harp on those who have different passions. Help them see the connections. #masterychat
A5 This is where having built a relationship can come in handy. I share with all Ss that I didn’t really value reading/writing until I reached HS. My main strategy is 1 on 1 convos—find their passions and also ex. Ways they write already (social media) #masterychat
The short answer to what we must do during reading and writing time is to read. And to write. Right there with our students. Only giving up this time to confer with a reader or a writer one-to-one or in small group. Our model here is more than text. It is the life. #MasteryChat
Hey everyone! I'm a college sophomore studying to be an elementary education teacher with a concentration in reading. This is my first time in this chat. Any tips for me in general when it's reading time or writing time? #masterychat#EDW200
You absolutely hit the nail on the head!! They need to see that writing is all around us and that everything they read was written by someone. #MasteryChat
He was thinking critically, analyzing, and engaging with the literature in wonderful ways! Another student found a connection between an article they read in history about agricultural domestication & the novel they were reading in English: Brave New World! So Cool! #masterychat
A5.2 I will never forget my 1 that told me how much he hated writing, but drew comics every chance I got. LOL loved popping his bubble to tell him that that's writing!! He told a story with his drawings. Saw him the other day and he still draws & is in high school #masterychat
A5. Most of mine see themselves as unable to read. They become good listeners and memorizers. We work a lot on associating pictures and sounds with the words. We spend time making sure they understand the mechanics of writing will working on reading fluency. #masterychat
A5: Find our their interests, then find books around that, which students will be successful reading. Success breeds success. With writing, have them record their ideas/writing so we can listen & celebrate they ‘are’ a writer, even if it’s hard to put down on paper. #MasteryChat
A5: Getting to know our Ss and being able to recommend books has helped me make connections, build relationships and help Ss get "hooked" on an author, series, genre, etc. #MasteryChat
A5 Providing some writing freedom should help! Trying blogs to practice writing skills and devices. We’ll share with other classes. Reading is intriguing if we let the texts intrigue our students. Question lists and quizzes disconnect the student from the message. #MasteryChat
A4 I think writing in journals reading aloud sharing interests talking about books newspapers journals magazines my Ss always kept a journal about labs wrote lab reports and then read them out loud to one another they also wrote reflections about labs and results #MasteryChat
This is a powerful point. Brings to light the power of digital & analog platforms. Journals, backchannels, Drive, and blogs all give SS a chance to write and share their writing at home and beyond. #masterychat#TeachWriting
A5b - Keep things between you and the student unless the work is really well done. Kids need to feel good about what they read or write. Sharing varied examples can also be a great idea. #masterychat
A5: I saw a tweet recently about a teacher in this situation. She asked the student what he liked to do and when he answered she said, “I bet we can find a book about that! Let’s look together.” #Masterychat
You must know that I'm always open for conversation regarding the sharing of picture books in the secondary classroom. And so many titles ready for content area classrooms. These quick-hit looks at so many subjects with the visuals to boost the ideas being presented. #masterychat
Curious how many teachers get to practice being readers and writers within their school culture. Does admin promote it? Value it? Do you get to share your work w/colleagues? #masterychat
Honestly, I think that if they don’t see themselves as readers/writers it’s about encouraging them to DO THINGS that will either confirm or reject that as well as other skills/identities. #MasteryChat#SelfAwareness
It's so true! I started blogging with my 8th garders last year, but we kept it private between teacher and Ss since it was a brand new experience. #masterychat
Being authentic with our students about our own growth in becoming passionate readers and writers is essential in our pursuit of starting their own journeys! #MasteryChat
In this present time where educators often bemoan the perceived degrading of Ss reading/writing skills due to all the devices and tech, it’s neat to see Ss using their devices to learn and communicate. No matter the mode, the key is the communication. #Masterychat
A5. Using a book to read, draw pictures, sketches, short words to describe what's taking place, build it up to summaries in the pics, from summaries work on introduction, then conclusion and tieing everything together! #masterychat
A4: I let kids choose cozy spots in the room to read & work comfortably. Some Ts think giving them this freedom can cause distractions, but I’ve found that Ss get more done when they enjoy their environment! #Masterychat
A5 Find their interest & let It grow! I remember a LS student who loved building engines fixed lawn mowers & tractors could write about and read about it all day long! That is science so I made connections to what we were studying especially to physics! #studentvoice#MasteryChat
#masterychat a4 - I have a pretty big classroom library. I make a point to pair up kids with books on topics that interest them. I try really hard to help them fine that *one* book (esp reluctant readers).
A5 I’m planning on using loose parts for writing, where students write their parts on post it notes. It’s easier to rearrange, edit and revise in bits 😀 Not an overwhelming task to rewrite (my S’s are special needs) #masterychat
Curious how many teachers get to practice being readers and writers within their school culture. Does admin promote it? Value it? Do you get to share your work w/colleagues? #masterychat
Letting them see that growth with their own two eyes can be so powerful! That is why I ALWAYS give pretests in math even if I KNOW they don't know anything about the topic! Showing them two weeks later how much they have grown always has a positive effect. #masterychat
A5: I take the TIME in the beginning of the year to teach ALL kids they are readers starting with the book: Rocket Learns to Read. Students start by reading pictures, letters, numbers and their name as I prove to them they are readers! #masterychat
If you’re interestedly trying something new to get students reading, discussing, and enjoying literature, this works! It’s also great practice before writing. The podcast has lots of ideas and ILeo many this week have started sharing their experiences with it! #masterychat
A5: My amazing professor @ISUPanamaTrip mentioned bridging the gap between an ELLs native language and the mainstream language. I feel the same applies. We need to bridge the gap and help ALL students become proficient readers. #masterychat
A6: Be truly present with your students as they read and write. Be mindful or their needs as you listen to their reflections of process and the love of the art. #Masterychat
A6: It is interesting to see how many Ts blog with their Ss. I have had my Ss blog before, and I have written a couple of professional blog posts, but creating a collaborative blog is something I would like to look into further! #masterychat
When we adapt our instruction to student individual needs and interests, phenomenal things can happen. I love that @MsSmith0908 did this for her student! #masterychat
I had a Ss who had difficult time with reading and writing. However, he loved comic books. I found a collection of graphic novels for him to read, from fiction to nonfiction. He started his writing using Google slides, which turned into 5 paragraphs. #masterychat
A6: Shepherd readers and writers from behind with encouragement and choice. It's okay to struggle; everyone does. I'm not the only reader and writer in the building, so if you need help, ask around!
#MasteryChat
WOW! Fast, furious and fabulous chat! Now let's take a moment to breathe and reflect.
Be sure to follow at least 5 new people tonight! Grow your PLN!
#masterychat
A5: Gardner's MI Theory is showing Ss how we may gravitate towards passions different from others. Writing what we feel words mean was a great kick starter, even my Ss who felt they were not great at literacy skills saw how read/write connects to their strengths. #MasteryChat
I’ve been trying to model writing & annotating skills with my students... a couple days ago I had them ask me ANY question they wanted... on paper... and I’m having so much fun answering them back! Ss want to get to know you, too! #MasteryChat
A6: Giving the Ss short writings like tweets, social media posts about what either we or they are reading to show them they actually write all the time. #MasteryChat
A5: I think it’s important to emphasize that in order to be a reader, you don’t have to consume full novels or the classics. You can read on social media, in magazines, and while on your laptop in class. We all read all the time, and everyone is welcome as a reader. #masterychat
A6: I plan on having a laminated poster sharing what I am currently reading and helping my students to realize the importance of sharing their story. #masterychat
Q6 Definitely going to recommend the teachers complete at least one interest inventory so that the classroom is more student led. I will make it a priority to support their student's interests with books and resources. Great chat! Wonderful educators! #MasteryChat
A5: As author friend, Cynthia Lord, once told me (in reference to my own confidence as a collage artist): "If you do the VERB, then you are the NOUN." The definition cannot life in the mastery as it can and must in the active pursuit/passion. #MasteryChat
A5
CHOICE ELIMINATES FEAR!
✨💥✨💥✨💥✨💥💥✨
Giving students freedom to read anything and everything eliminates the fear of “not being a good reader”. Too often kids are labeled “a bad reader” early on in reading groups and they believe it from then on! #MasteryChat
#masterychat a5 and #whatisschool Telling short stories about bears stomping through woods, gives you a whole nother view of the universe. Learning happens on a sea of talk (Britton, 1970) This speaking is another way into writing
#deafed
A6: read and write WITH your students. Show them genuine interest, disinterest, wins, and struggles. Vulnerability and authenticity goes a long way #masterychat
The moment my students felt comfortable telling me they hated the book we were reading, I knew they had made it to a higher level.
What did I do next? I helped them articulate, with evidence, why it sucked and how it could be improved.
#masterychat
A6: Thinking hard about @LauraMcConnel18’s comment that there isn’t “bedtime writing” at home. 🤔 How do we encourage writing like we do reading??? My brain is contemplating this one!! 🧠#MasteryChat
A6: Got to get my @Flipgrid on! Been watching YouTube tutorials & need to just get it out there to my Ss! Love seeing what everyone does with it in their classrooms when they TwitterBrag! #MasteryChat
A5: "Fake it til you make it?" Here's a twist for "non-readers." "Take it (to them) until they know you mean it." Take a book to another room the student will be in. Leave it on their desk with a note. I'm not just thinking about readers when they are in my room. #MasteryChat
I hope everyone is having a wonderful start to the school year! If you have not started yet (like me), best wishes for a fantastic first few days! #MasteryChat
I know I said it before, but I must say it again, your video responses are breathtaking. I love how ASL is storytelling w/ facial expression & movement. It is a language & a dance.
I am honored that you shared this piece of you with the #masterychat family tonight.
A6. Sometimes having a Ss verbally speak the sentence, can help them to understand those punctuation marks by hearing the pauses in their voices! Start small with writing pieces, and build Ss up as they grow with confidence ! #masterychat
A6 For me the biggest take away is to just be yourself! Be authentic let Ss know that you value reading and writing and they will value reading and writing Model good reading & writing habits and make time in class for it to be genuine and meaningful! #masterychat
A6 Working on a book log where they're sharing their wow! Hmmm...I Wonder? etc moments to make better connections rather than just summarizing and feeling like a chore to read and write. #masterychat
