Hi . Please introduce yourself and let me know how the year start has gone.
Good evening and ! Bryan from Dayton - the year has gone in fits and starts, I feel. Not sure if that makes progress...
I think it does. Our field is rarely linear.
Question 1 is coming up shortly.
Hello friends Lisa from here! Start of year super BUSY but good and sooo proud of our Ss today! https://t.co/hCzESSTfxd
iterations make the world go round. Welcome to the chat Bryan and thanks for having me as well!
That's a fancy lookin' table!
That looks like quite a day.
Howdy all! Ellen in SF Bay Area. I need to turn off the debate! I know I shouldn’t look, but it’s on!!
our year operates in quarters and it’s been a very serious exercise in organizational shift in culture / mission. Iterating...
our Ss presenting on a panel today at the African American Chamber Breakfast and did Amazing!!!!
It is like a car crash. Hard to turn away.
Present their work? Love it. Kudos!
A1: topic must interest Ss in Ss get to identify/solve problems and concerns meaningful to them! https://t.co/VjR16mZKoQ
Ela here! Systemic Design conference was great; coming back w/ a cold and without a voice less so. May be a short-timer tonight!
Good evening everyone! Jessica, SF bay area
I know you and your team do this well Lisa. How do you draw this feedback from students?
A1: Right now, I'm hyper-focused on providing our teams time to do the actual work. W/out time (& attention/energy) it's tough
Glad you're hear for what you can manage. :)
Bryan, do you embed time into the instructional day?
we use methods, improv routines
I work mostly with my colleagues & no, they don't have such time.
Thank you , and thank you for moderating !
I agree! Student investment is huge in Ss taking time to be thoughtful & interative
So this kind of work can happen in constraints.
Some mix of primary/secondary research and field based learning can create deeper engagement.
Lisa have your teachers experimented with action research?
A1 we need to recognize that failure is an option to be able to learn & make appropriate changes, interactions & iterations.
Agreed. Constraints are absolutely necessary. There's a happy medium between no time and too much time. :)
i think time is one of the biggest challenges.
all the time. We are building the school together. Solve problems thru CPL (collaborative professional learning)
That balance is key. Looking to scaffold but also provide enough freedom.
A1. Another approach is mentioning that IDEO teams hit 100 ideas in an hour and challenging folks to beat it.
A1: Ss need to be okay w/ messiness, inperfection, & making mistakes w/each interation getting closer to the solution
Such an invigorating strategy.
I love seeing what folks can come up with when they have less time than they want. :)
. Yes! Otherwise what need is there for iteration if the goal is immediate perfection
Q2 for : “Along with literacy and numeracy, is there an argument that creative confidence is essential… “… https://t.co/wfh6S8ErEm
favorite method 4 this is creative matrix
A4: I think creative confidence is part of the needed soft/human skills.
A2: I think we can build creative confidence while becoming literate and numerate (is that a word?)
it is now if it wasn’t. ;)
It provides "rationale" for prototype not being perfect/done etc. Helps push them past their issues
it's a word if you used it! I think creative literacy is just as important .. like DT is a literacy.
A2: I think all 3 are needed & necessary at the level that literacy is.
or . it's like watching a ball game during dinner ...
This is an important point I think and reminds me of the book Show Your Work.
A2b: Without creativity, what will you do with your literacy or numeracy?
what would you say literacy is to you ?
ooh--I haven't read that one (but loved Steal like an Artist)--have to check it out
I've seen you and post this, love it!
In this context, fairly traditional definition of being able to read and write well, I guess.
Eeeek! I can’t look away!
And if creative confidence includes problem defining, then it's your skill set to change the world
They are starting to look alike to me. These split screens are killing me.
Can we add problem finding?
hmmm. challenge maybe accepted. do you have a link to that?
I think that's what I mean by problem defining so definitely!
A3: I think divisions might develop closer partnerships with post sec to foster apprenticeship models.
A3: What if Ts in training worked in design methods in addition to the traditional methods? Would they take it 2 their classrooms
I always expand it to think of just a literacy of art, literacy in design thinking, entrepreneirsikp etc
A3: such an important question b/c I don't think it's currently happening :(
YES! Improvement is always possible - though it might not be defined as a "problem"
I think if they took it to schools that would be a really good place to start.
Sure, then numeracy could be called literacy of numbers and mathematical thinking, I suppose. :)
That might help us make our schools the most amazing places to work.
How do we get that going?
. it starts w/ building the pre-service Ts creative confidence-I've found low-key making activities & impro help
, seen this video https://t.co/8tEDuH8YuW ? We usually didn't comment on each idea—still you can see how they add up!
I have heard a few people talk about using improv but that is new for me.
And if I may push this further, creativity might be defined "literacy in productivity" ;)
I like that. Bias for action right there.
We've been doing it w/"regular" teachers to support getting out of the expert mindset & embrace ambiguity & uncertainty
Love using improv 4developing mindsets and creative confidence! 2 bad ur not closer. Doing workshop 11/10!
Improv tenets are amazing 2 open folks up 2 possibilities. See Action Collabs & talk to
so sad that I can't come & screwed that you won't be helping me :|
A3. Barkai Jewish School in NY used DT to create their "PD system" itself—T's asked and offered topics to learn from each other.
Jealous! I'm currently trying to get permission to redesign our PD experience. SO much potential there for folks to own
We do a lot of that (learn from one another). If needed, someone goes out to learn, brings back, then adapts & shares
A3.I've found that giving folks—T's or otherwise—space to use DT on their own challenges is powerfully motivating PD.
Yes, is also an improv all-star.
that was one of our challenges I tried 2 make change at my former school. no chance.
Inertia is SOO strong sometimes. :(
We just formed a committee tasked with this very thing. Please see me your ideas for how do best do this.
Addressing the potential for improvement in any way is a VERY good start. :)
It can be like moving icebergs. I think we just need to find our tribe.
and I are almost done putting together a design sprint around PD.
In a weird way... yes. Though I am indeed looking for alternative opportunities :)
Sneaky & subversive is the way to go. No idea why there is an edcamp scheduled during regular meeting...
Yup. Even recognizing the need for change is already ahead of lots of folks. https://t.co/bGDHt21yX9
Addressing the potential for improvement in any way is a VERY good start. :)
Hmm, what if it isn't "PD"?
& I like Michael Fullan's "no plans longer than 90 days" approach. Dream it, plan it, do it, iterate quickly
As an English teacher, I just gotta say… someone give ‘he who shall not be named’ a thesaurus!! Word 4 disaster?!?
Hehehe.... super small school here... missing people are noticed ;P
Q5: … even reflecting on our question, how much do you bring ‘solutions based thinking’ into your contex… https://t.co/KaAHWUZ5dv
Edu definitely gets bogged down in "this is how we've always done it"/very, very slow change
Yeah... lots of things going on now. Gotta be careful about messing up other valuable plans. We'll get there, I hope
Q5: Really easy to get bogged down in the quagmire. Design can break things open and let in a little light.
Tasked with what? redesigning PD? teachers driving their own learning?
Trying to frame it as professional learning as a way to think about opportunities other than 'sessions'.
Reviewing our pd model at ind, school and div levels.
we talk about it as modeling life long learning & create opportunities around that
A5: Lots o' ways! What if we began our units listening for MoVes from our Ss & designed learning approach from what they need?
I think we need to figure ways to give time and resources. Hard to change with no relief for t's
All about the tribe! That's why I love https://t.co/0gF3bfLj2x
It can be like moving icebergs. I think we just need to find our tribe.
I agree COMPLETELY. We keep those Ts runnin'...
I think we could also fit community in this model. Schools as hubs of social innovation.
I like it too—tho it's more like a pilot than prototype to me—many smaller adjustments/cycles in 90 days
Yes and!! Ts really need time. One of biggest challenges. Ts overwhelmed! https://t.co/6rKZ1VuD3i
I agree COMPLETELY. We keep those Ts runnin'...
& whyI love dt --figuring out the real issue/what we really need & then focusing energy on that
Indeed. I think an element of it is the philosophy that there never is a final version. We live in prototypes
If we can get those feedback loops rolling a learning culture emerges.
I think folks can always find more time PROVIDED that they have the energy of attention to give to "one more thing"
I like to under sell and over deliver whenever possible ;)
Woah... it's almost 10? How'd that happen? Great convos :)
cool meeting you, going to catch the ... it's loopy land.
Ditto - though I might NOT go check the debate... They don't need the ad revenue... ;) Goodnight
Folks make some amazing things happen w/ the smallest amounts of time but not when they have no energy for it left :(
thx 4 great chat tonight! Sorry I was a bit distracted
yup. needs to meaningful and real.
Understandable. Let's get a designer in the White House!
. thanks for the chat! Loved your questions
