The format for #425chat is different from the others. While we use the Q1:A1 format to answer all the questions and answers, I post ALL the questions at once so everyone can pick and choose what you spend your time on! Just be sure to use the format and hashtag!
Alright! ALL questions are posted! Please don’t forget to preface your tweet with A followed by the number of the question you are answering. And of course include #425chat in ALL responses or comments!
A1: Defensively we get 60-70 mins a day Monday through Wednesday...about 45 mins for walk through Thursday...everyday after practice we meet defensively and either watch practice and/or the opponent on film and have board time for at least another 15 minutes #425chat
I didn't start until 8/15 at my new school..so the best thing we did was really focus on kids busting their butt during pursuit drill..we tried to make it a special deal for the kids #425chat
A3: not many anymore. We condition non paid pre practice and stay consistent with drills and schedule. Try to focus on less rather than multiple skills at once. #425chat
A2: Up tempo Formation alignment period that also incorporated running to the ball...DEF on sideline, get call, set-GO, run onto field n line up to scout formation, COMMUNICATE n align perfectly, then SPRINT to wherever I throw the ball, as many reps in 5min as possible #425chat
A2: We were much more intentional about teaching guys a common vocabulary on the defensive side of the ball. Really helped the kids communicate with each other during practice and on Friday nights and made teaching during defensive periods much easier #425chat
A4: we Announce the periods on the PA system 1 minute before period changes. Try to keep the format consistent everyday. Easier for the players to know where to go. More time for coaches to focus on instruction #425chat
A2: Vs. the Option, practicing without a ball. Vs. a Wing-T team, we did a Read Period for our ILBs, $, and WS where we faced 2 Guards, QB, FB, RB, TE, and the Wing Back. We repped their main Run and PA plays before Inside Drill & it helped them to read their keys. #425chat
A2: I think the best enhancement I’ve made since I’ve been at my school was just defending everything out of base. But also in my time at my school coaching the heck out of pursuit drills, tackling drills and turnover drills. We try and swarm to the ball. #425chat
A1: is our defensive day where we just focus on it for the majority of practice. Monday-Tuesday we more so walk through with it & Thursday is just a big review for the week, double checking the boxes & film studies. #425chat
A6) #425chat LOL,If coaches could still get reps that’d be the solution. In recent years depth has been an issue..suspect it will continue to be. so it’s a balancing act of staying healthy yet challenging young bucks to step up. HC or someone who knows opponent needs to run it.
A6: Have the scout team watch an Install video of the opponent's best plays before practice. Got our HC to give us a 5 minute Indy period for Scouts to work Dbl hand-off vs a big Counter Criss-Cross team. All this helped us to be fairly crisp in simulating our opponent. #425chat
A6 cont.) #425chat also, have been part of rotating captains where scout player of the week is named captain for the next week during film review. Creates buy-in and is fun!
A3: during the summer and up to the season we will pursuit everyday. We will back off during the year. During the summer and up until game week we rotate tackle circuit one day and turnover circuit the next. During season we have turnover Monday and tackle Tuesday. #425chat
A3: We work tackling/TO circuits to build a foundation for the start of camp. In August our coaches focus on position specific and team tackling. We rotate guys based on time and period number especially for pass skel and inside run, especially our Rovers and Backers #425chat
A4: I think our practice, while organized, can be very fluid based on the need of the kids..with a younger, more inexperienced group, being able to be dynamic, while staying organized, is essential for maximum growth!

A3: Tackling Circuit n T.O. Each once w/ 4 stations in each circuit...Circuit on Thursday during walk through non-padded that has 4 stations, 2 Tackling and 2 T.O...scares me to not tackle from Wednesday evening to Friday night so I like the combined walkthrough Circuit #425chat
A5: Our biggest infences during the week on tackling is on Tuesday. However, we work tackling every day. I believe in drills where you work more than one thing. On the Dline we will work a block Rec drill and add tackling in with it. #425chat
A1) #425chat anywhere from 40-55 minutes for defense daily basis. Monday’s usually a little longer due to new game plan. As week progresses time should go down as we get better with execution (ideally).
A4: We have some great scout team players. Our guys love to compete and get after it. They feed off each others energy and it’s contagious, definitely challenges our Varsity groups. #425chat
A5: Every day at least 15 mins in Indy...being one of the first things that is done each practice, it sets the tone for how we will be the rest of the day...a great "temperature check" for us as coaches to see how the guys are for that day!
#425Chat
We also two platoon. We are on the practice field for approx 2 hours daily, 75-80% is defense, other chunk is specials. We will shorten practices as the season wears on and watch more film #425chat
A4: Emphasis on bein high motor, high tempo..short periods of high intensity tryin not to sit in any one thing longer than 10-15 mins..this gives everyone, coaches included, a sense of urgency..practice situational defense n RUN everywhere just like you will to the ball #425chat
A2: We REALLY simplified our defense this year. We had multiple games where we didn’t call anything besides our base defense. It allowed our kids to play fast. We also drilled tackling a lot more then previous years. #425chat
A5: We work tackling every day. We stressed the importance of doing the little things well this year and it showed. Tues. and Wed. we work position specific tackling. Thurs. we rep fits and leverage. We want our guys to take pride in being great tacklers. #425chat
A6: Being the WR Coach, I volunteer to lead our scout team and mandate my 2nd string or JV guys participate....Our DC draws cards by hand and we have a script that we adhere to...our scout guys bring the energy and use this time to make our starting D better!
#425Chat
A3: We do most of our circuits in summer workouts. Once the season starts we have a tackling circuit and a turnover circuit....both twice a week #425chat
A4) Coordinators and Box Coaches were in charge of practice periods to get good/great reps and correct mistake during or after practice by watching film with a report to our HFC next morning #425chat
The rotating or tweaking of drills is crucial...as easily as kids get bored with certain things it’s almost a necessity to have ways to change drills, or incorporate new ones...amazing how much harder they go when intrigued by something #425chat
A4: near the end of the season we end up running a lot of plays vs the scout team. Our practice becomes very efficient because our defensive staff takes a ton of time outside of practice drawing up plays we will see in the game #425chat
A6: We have a scout team player of the week we recognize at team dinner. We also have a scout team depth chart for certain periods. It lets us create matchups for the week and imitate our opponents top guys. Really helped our guys take pride in the scout team. #425chat
