    A1 The AP during my early years at my current school was an incredibly compassionate mentor. On my worst days she pointed out my strengths and offered help, not judgment. She understood my values and almost clairvoyantly knew what I’d end up becoming. #HackLearning

    A1: My 10th grade geometry teacher Mrs. Lish stands out for me. She knew how much I was struggling w math, tutored me, and used formative assessment and standards based grading rather than relying on summative assessments that I struggled with. #HackLearning

    A1: Mrs. LaBarbra was my second grade teacher. She tutored me in math at my house after school because when I changed schools that year, I learned I was very much behind. She made certain that I knew I was capable, and she was very warm and kind. #HackLearning

    #hacklearning A1: The most compassionate teacher I ever had was Dr. Howard Mancing who is still a Spanish teacher at Purdue University. I called him from Madrid once while lost looking for a restaurant, and he guided me there on the phone from overseas. He always encouraged me.

    Most compassionate teacher: HS LA, Mrs. D. I will always remember how she connected & cared with current & former students. Whenever any of them joined the military & were deployed, she had our whole class write letters/cards of encouragement to send them. #HackLearning

    A1: Ms. Bowling had a passion for teaching rural mountain high schoolers Language Arts. She was a saint! She’s the first teacher that I can remember who tried to personalize our learning! I wasn’t ever an ELA fan, but she helped me embrace it! #hacklearning

    #HackLearning My most compassionate teacher was Mr. Hickson, my grade 5 teacher. That was the year my dad died and he let me work thru things in my journal, even letting me to not write after getting in a "fight" with said journal. Man ahead of his time.

    Compassionate ... nine ... passionate would be a different story, but I never had a teacher K-12 that I felt some warm and fuzzy feeling ... nor do I believe they genuinely cared about me, but then I did not make it easy for them to like me. #hacklearning

    YES. We speak about this often, Ellen and I...this notion of seeing rather than simply sorting the huge number of students we work with. In fact, it's how our friendship began. By talking this through as parents who were coming to know each other. #HackLearning

    A1. Had to be my high school math teacher. She was the first person who told me I was really good at math. I thought I was just too slow but she let me know that I was extra careful and that was a good thing. I was never the same. #hacklearning

      A1. One of the most? Formerly Mr. Bartunek. He was my history teacher and baseball coach. He’s now a priest. He never ignored the content but always focused on the student. He was like a human trust fall. He challenged you but was there to catch you if you missed the mark.

    A1 my 3rd grade teacher because she believed in me and never gave up on me when i didn’t understand. She also allowed me to be creative rather than just doing worksheets. #hacklearning

    Yes, becasue you can see it on their face, before they even tell you there is something going on. I had that a couple of weeks ago with a 3rd grader. The frustration on his face nearly broke my heart. #hacklearning

    This is the kind of thinking that destroyed education, & MADE it #hacklearning When an adult exploits what we have always known (youth is emotional) they are saying we don’t want students to EVER outgrow and overcome. Fight the #EducationalIndistrialComplex Or your kids are lost!

    It was really interesting for us to think about, because even during our most successful moments (and it was the same for our children) we struggled with things. Hard things. And people aren't quite as compassionate then. Assumptions are made. #HackLearning

      The problem is there are few teachers who actually understand what it is like to truly loathe school ... so many educators loved school as a kid and now have a hard time connecting with "those" kids who really don't care. #HackLearning
