Good morning #hacklearning! So glad to be back after traveling for the past FOUR weekends (can you say crazy schedule?)! And what a great topic! Aubrey, ed tech specialist in CO.
I'm Connie Hamilton, co-author of Hacking Homework and curriculum director in Saranac, MI. Enjoying coffee from my new mug I received for Mother's Day from my son Luke. #HackLearning
Good morning, #HackLearning! Lauren from NY - I teach 6th grade English and write about empowering students and teachers to live their values at school.
Morning, #hacklearning. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado where I'm in a fog at the moment. And not due to lack of coffee; this fog's literal.
I have! I'm in the Berkshires visiting with Ellen. Working in North Rockland, NY this week, so it was a nice fit. Back there tomorrow. Rainy but pretty here, still. Hope you are having a good one, too! #HackLearning
I think “surviving” also suits me. Hanging on to my sanity by a thread! Luckily, my students keep me pushing forward. This is our last week. #hacklearning

A1 We might need reminders that so many students don't experience much kindness outside of school. What we might think is insignificant might carry them through an entire day. #HackLearning
A1 The AP during my early years at my current school was an incredibly compassionate mentor. On my worst days she pointed out my strengths and offered help, not judgment. She understood my values and almost clairvoyantly knew what I’d end up becoming. #HackLearning
A1: My 10th grade geometry teacher Mrs. Lish stands out for me. She knew how much I was struggling w math, tutored me, and used formative assessment and standards based grading rather than relying on summative assessments that I struggled with. #HackLearning
A1: Mrs. LaBarbra was my second grade teacher. She tutored me in math at my house after school because when I changed schools that year, I learned I was very much behind. She made certain that I knew I was capable, and she was very warm and kind. #HackLearning
I see @stacysanders3 share her compassion to others (students and staff) on a daily basis. There is no question she cares so much. She makes everyone know they're loved. #HackLearning
#hacklearning A1: The most compassionate teacher I ever had was Dr. Howard Mancing who is still a Spanish teacher at Purdue University. I called him from Madrid once while lost looking for a restaurant, and he guided me there on the phone from overseas. He always encouraged me.
Most compassionate teacher: HS LA, Mrs. D. I will always remember how she connected & cared with current & former students. Whenever any of them joined the military & were deployed, she had our whole class write letters/cards of encouragement to send them. #HackLearning
A1: Ms. Bowling had a passion for teaching rural mountain high schoolers Language Arts. She was a saint! She’s the first teacher that I can remember who tried to personalize our learning! I wasn’t ever an ELA fan, but she helped me embrace it! #hacklearning
#HackLearning My most compassionate teacher was Mr. Hickson, my grade 5 teacher. That was the year my dad died and he let me work thru things in my journal, even letting me to not write after getting in a "fight" with said journal. Man ahead of his time.
Compassionate ... nine ... passionate would be a different story, but I never had a teacher K-12 that I felt some warm and fuzzy feeling ... nor do I believe they genuinely cared about me, but then I did not make it easy for them to like me. #hacklearning
A1 Dr. Mendelson, my Amer Lit Prof ... he saw on me a teaching ability that I did not see in myself ... he helped me earn college scholarships so I could stay in my university. #HackLearning
A1. Mrs F @SpfldCollege pushed me to write everyday as a freshman. I still have that journal That pushed my creative and efficient work ethic. Let me be me and learn and support an area of weakness #HackLearning
A1: Mr. Johnson, my first grade teacher, was compassionate and soft spoken. He never got angry but you knew immediately if you were misbehaving. He made learning fun! #hacklearning
A1: My most compassionate teacher always left his door open. He was always accessible and ready to engage in discussions that had nothing to do with academics #hacklearning
A1: in HS I had 3 Ts that were compassionate. 2 really built relationships while the other did, just in a different style, but she understood that I really didnt know how to read and helped me with that. #hacklearning
A1 The most compassionate teacher I ever had was my 5th grade teacher who was an amazing story teller, cared about our personal lives, and was there when my best friend lost her father. #hacklearning
A1 Mrs. Douglas in second grade. She was patient and kind even when the kids were struggling. She made us feel important and loved. Her kindness made an impact on my career. #hacklearning
A1: The most compassionate teach I had was Mrs Bright in 8th grade!! She really helped many young girls like me through the pressures that often experienced in HS as we all tried to find our place in life. #hacklearning#gwinchat
#HackLearning My most compassionate teacher was Mr. Hickson, my grade 5 teacher. That was the year my dad died and he let me work thru things in my journal, even letting me to not write after getting in a "fight" with said journal. Man ahead of his time.
Tough one - there were many...all showed concern and care for the person not necessarily the grade (but they were concerned about learning too) #HackLearning
I think “surviving” also suits me. Hanging on to my sanity by a thread! Luckily, my students keep me pushing forward. This is our last week. #hacklearning
YES. We speak about this often, Ellen and I...this notion of seeing rather than simply sorting the huge number of students we work with. In fact, it's how our friendship began. By talking this through as parents who were coming to know each other. #HackLearning
A1. Had to be my high school math teacher. She was the first person who told me I was really good at math. I thought I was just too slow but she let me know that I was extra careful and that was a good thing. I was never the same. #hacklearning
A1. One of the most? Formerly Mr. Bartunek. He was my history teacher and baseball coach. He’s now a priest. He never ignored the content but always focused on the student. He was like a human trust fall. He challenged you but was there to catch you if you missed the mark.
Compassion would’ve been to let Daddy sleep in instead of shouting my name from the other room until I got out of bed. Instead I’m here to join the conversation about compassion. 🙄 #HackLearning
A1 my 3rd grade teacher because she believed in me and never gave up on me when i didn’t understand. She also allowed me to be creative rather than just doing worksheets. #hacklearning
A1 My middle school band teacher taught me perseverance, compassion, and to relentlessly follow my own passions. He inspired me to get into education and we still speak to this day. #HackLearning
A1) I worked with an incredible 6th grade teacher whose blood, sweat, and tears were all for kids. He connected with every student and taught them to care about others. #HackLearning
A1 Running through litany of past teachers, my elementary 1s consistently stand out for their compassion, kindness -- efforts I recall in hindsight to make classmates & me feel included, safe, welcome. Belated thanks, Mrs. Rustin, Lynn, Campbell, Benson, Horton. #hacklearning
I saw him 4 years ago at my grade school reunion. He has retired and takes care of his son who has Down's Syndrome. It was amazing to see him again and talk about his influence on all of us. #HackLearning
A1: Most compassionate teacher that I didn't actually take a class from let me come to his classroom every day during lunch for about a year to help me work through a tough time. Knowing how much I value my lunch period now, I'm amazed & grateful! #HackLearning
How many hard to like kids are having this experience today, I wonder. What advice would give their teachers now, based on your own, Dennis? You're an expert here...that many could learn from. #HackLearning
Rob from western NY jumping in late- I have to nominate Mr. Braas 10th grade English. Taught me the power of words and how to use them. His lessons stick with me today in my 5th grade classroom #HackLearning
A1: in HS I had 3 Ts that were compassionate. 2 really built relationships while the other did, just in a different style, but she understood that I really didnt know how to read and helped me with that. #hacklearning
A1 Mr. Winkler my Geology teacher in high school. He was always interested in how things were going outside of the classroom. He was great at creating relationships with students. #hacklearning
A1-pt2: Mrs. Bright helped me appreciate my differences and how my opinion and experiences affected others. She inspired me to take risks and step out of my comfort zone. Build my own box! #hacklearning#gwinchat
A1 Sister Linda in 1st grade. She was a ventriloquist and used that to help talk us through some difficult conversations. She was upbeat, friendly and gave us lots of smiles each day. Positive experiences all around. #HackLearning
Hello! I’m Reyna from NY! I’m heading out on the Hudson River for Kayak Guide Training, so I’ll try to jump in when I can. Just wanted to say how lucky everyone is to connect with @AngelaStockman & @EllenFeigGray today. The work they’ve done is incredible! #hacklearning
A1 High School Spanish teacher who shared stories, and showed she cared about us with personal connections and listening. The content was important, but you could tell people were important too #HackLearning
A1)Mrs. Mensik, 4th grade. She was in my life during my mom’s second marriage to an abusive man. She knew my awful situation at home and would find ways for me to help her after school so I could delay going home. Must have done a million bulletin boards for her. #hacklearning
A1: Dr Bijoy Sahoo was my International Business professor in college @SCSTATE1896 . He had high standards for us but he showed us compassion when we were struggling with the information. He was patient. He understood that we were juggling a lot of stress. #hacklearning
A1 Mrs. Douglas in second grade. She was patient and kind even when the kids were struggling. She made us feel important and loved. Her kindness made an impact on my career. #hacklearning
A1: My daughter has a teacher, Mary Conners, who always puts kids' emotional needs ahead of academics. She's so amazing that my daughter wrote a story about her favorite place in the world, and it was in Mrs. Conners' classroom. How many kids would write that? #hacklearning
A1. Dr Pullan at @BostonCollege pushed us in Ed Law to dig deep and pushed us to learn through challenges and feedback but routed in care @MMARPS#HackLearning
Oh, yeah. I struggle to write--especially journaling--when I've suffered a hard loss. So many Ts might require it for a grade. Perceptive and compassionate, that guy. And hi Pam! I'm glad to see you and grateful you're here as always my friend. #HackLearning
A1 The best teacher I had was my high school calculus teacher. Besides being a great educator, she cared about my interests. She taught me it’s all about relationships! #HackLearning
A1: I'll never forget how my kindergarten teacher, Ms. Borkell, helped me make the transition from nursery school to K. I entered a week later than the other kids and was very nervous. She made me feel right at home!
#hacklearning
Yes, in my experience having a teacher believe in you makes all the difference. I had a compassionate math teacher too who tutored me when I struggled. #HackLearning
A1. Had to be my high school math teacher. She was the first person who told me I was really good at math. I thought I was just too slow but she let me know that I was extra careful and that was a good thing. I was never the same. #hacklearning
It was the beginning for me ... he planted a seed and other professors watered and sunned it ... I am who I am in EDU today because of his insight! I need to see if he is still with us. 😍 #HackLearning
A2: Someone who knows connections Trump content if you want Ss to reach their potential and who also breathes empathy in the face of suffering #HackLearning
A2: Compassionate Ts are real. They go in, they’re giving it their all and they’re smiling while they do it. All of the pressures of “outside” are left at the door bc they know that inside of that CR- Ss NEED them. Do they fail? Sometimes, but they never give up. #hacklearning
A2: Compassionate teachers get to know their students' character strengths as well as abilities, see their potential as human beings as well as academic achievers. #HackLearning
A2: A compassionate teacher ACTS on what is learned by listening to and truly seeing students--those who are suffering and those who are thriving, too. Compassion is a verb. It's intentional, purposeful action. #HackLearning
#hacklearning A2: A compassionate teacher cares about every single student. He develops relationships regardless of socioeconomic status or grades. Kids know he truly cares about them, and they know they are important to the world.
#HackLearning Ts who listen, take time to learn about their Ss and find ways to engage students that may not be conventional are right up there in my books.
The problem is there are few teachers who actually understand what it is like to truly loathe school ... so many educators loved school as a kid and now have a hard time connecting with "those" kids who really don't care. #HackLearning
A1: Most compassionate teacher that I didn't actually take a class from let me come to his classroom every day during lunch for about a year to help me work through a tough time. Knowing how much I value my lunch period now, I'm amazed & grateful! #HackLearning
Q2: To be compassionate (and consequently what a good teacher is), think these questions about EACH student—“Is she/he being seen? Is she/he being heard?” And then make sure of it. #hacklearning
A2 A compassionate teacher recognizes that everything important is also a potential source of struggle and pain. The teacher notices that pain and offers the type of support that the student needs—not necessarily what’s convenient or comfortable.
#HackLearning
A1: Mrs Bunyard, my 5th grade teacher. She wanted to know what our passions were & utilized this to allow us to demonstrate our learning. She was the first teacher to allow me to use my artistic, creative side! She also ate lunch with us & came to birthday parties!
A2 I think when teachers authentically care about their students - who they are as people -- it shows. Kids can spot a phony. Relationships matter! #HackLearning
A2 every experience as a student and person from their youth to the present develops compassion. The relationships they have with others play a huge roll. They are invested and passionate about people #hacklearning
A2 I think when teachers authentically care about their students - who they are as people -- it shows. Kids can spot a phony. Relationships matter! #HackLearning
A2: Time - giving time to your students in and outside of the classroom. Listening - actually hearing your students and following up/showing interest. Actions - showing up to that school play just to say hi, and showing a true interest in your Ss. #HackLearning
A2) Ability to listen, focus on developing relationships, being nonjudgmental, seeing students in spite of behaviors, helping others through tough times. Happily, I get to see this daily. #HackLearning
Is suffering necessary, though? We talk about this often......the notion that traditional defs speak only to suffering. Don't all deserve empathy and our compassion, even those who are not suffering? #HackLearning
The problem is there are few teachers who actually understand what it is like to truly loathe school ... so many educators loved school as a kid and now have a hard time connecting with "those" kids who really don't care. #HackLearning
A2 Compassion comes from a place of genuineness and that comes from getting to know you. Relationships, active listener, supportive are things I think of related to compassionate people. #HackLearning
A2: Compassionate teachers never carry judgement. They build relationships with students that are anchored in trust and forgiveness. They always focus on growth regardless of how destructive a student’s behavior is because they recognize that pain manifests as anger #hacklearning
I think my first teacher to show me compassion was my 1st grade one. My kindergarten teacher had focused on weaknesses, that I barely spoke, downplaying my advanced reading skills. In contrast, the first thing my 1st grade teacher noted was my “beautiful smile.” #HackLearning A1
I am tired of sitting in meetings with "school lovers" who don't understand the "shop kids" ... I totally understand why some kids are not into writing essays. #HackLearning
A2: the key to compassion in teachers is understanding that a kid's emotional well being is far more important than her academic well being.
#hacklearning#CompassionateClassrooms
A2) I think when teachers remember and live their own humanity, they better remember to treat their Ss for who they are: fellow humans, who need empathy, compassion, and grace. That is the root of compassion. #hacklearning
#HackLearning A2: Also attending as many sporting events and extracurricular activities for your students as you possibly can. This shows we care, and Ss really appreciate it.
A2 Compassionate teachers educate people and adjust the routines & systems based on the circumstances of the children. We’re people not robots 🤖. #HackLearning
#hacklearning A2: A compassionate teacher cares about every single student. He develops relationships regardless of socioeconomic status or grades. Kids know he truly cares about them, and they know they are important to the world.
#HackLearning A2. A teacher who would relate to the Ss needs ,a Ss should be able to identify with the Teacher. An approachable attitude will be good to have . One who has faith in the students capabilities and even if the T doesn't ,he makes the Ss believe in themselves.
The problem is there are few teachers who actually understand what it is like to truly loathe school ... so many educators loved school as a kid and now have a hard time connecting with "those" kids who really don't care. #HackLearning
Great talk about compassion here in #hacklearning. From a leadership perspective...how do you teach compassion? If a teacher is less than compassionate, how can we coach them to grow? #HackLearning
A2 compassionate teachers make sure every student knows they matters and make sure everyone student knows they will be expected to learn. #HackLearning
For those who have asked about receiving support beyond the book: @EllenFeigGray and I have facilitated this work on the ground for some time now. We just opened our digital course last week as well. Join us. :) https://t.co/Byhj5ocC53#HackLearning
We can show our compassion as educators by recognizing that every child is different and meeting kids where they are in order to help them learn. #hacklearning
A2 compassionate teachers make sure every student knows they matters and make sure everyone student knows they will be expected to learn. #HackLearning
I was just thinking about that. There are people that I don't like (even some Ss!) but I know in my heart that they probably need more compassion than others. #HackLearning
A2: Compassion is natural, however being compassionate in the face of all that must be done, what is seen and heard, and what is left at home is what makes many really compassionate - knowing that the Ss and our co-workers need us. #hacklearning
THIS. I find myself reflecting on this so often. I did not like school. I was not successful at it until I realized that college was my ticket out of a troubling home situation. I played school well, then. Our biases compromise our work as Ts. Yup. #HackLearning
The problem is there are few teachers who actually understand what it is like to truly loathe school ... so many educators loved school as a kid and now have a hard time connecting with "those" kids who really don't care. #HackLearning
I think suffering is just the easiest to recognize the need ... everyone needs compassion though because many hide their suffering (or are between sufferings) 💜 #HackLearning
#HackLearning A2: Also attending as many sporting events and extracurricular activities for your students as you possibly can. This shows we care, and Ss really appreciate it.
A2: the key to compassion in teachers is understanding that a kid's emotional well being is far more important than her academic well being.
#hacklearning#CompassionateClassrooms
In order to be compassionate you need to understand your kids, develop empathy by learning their stories, being their champion , relationships are key #HackLearning
THANK YOU for choosing the profession in spite of—and apparently because of—your own negative experiences with school. I’m sure you’re making a real difference with kids like you. #HackLearning
In reply to
@LaurenPorosoff, @DennisDill, @gwena_walker
A2 I suspect the most compassionate teachers recognize what students need often before students themselves. Depending on circumstances, meeting of such needs can be subtle, stealthy, barely perceptible or bold & demonstrative. Compassion there, too. #hacklearning
Yes! It’s important to show you care about the whole child and not just your content area. Also your presence is demonstrating an interest in the community. #hacklearning
This was one of the most important things I learned very early on in my own teaching career. But I find that some teachers and leaders still struggle when I practice vulnerability. I admire those who do. They get it. #HackLearning
The problem is there are few teachers who actually understand what it is like to truly loathe school ... so many educators loved school as a kid and now have a hard time connecting with "those" kids who really don't care. #HackLearning
A2 Once I wore a pair of blue pants instead of the 5 day a week khaki and I stood in front of my class saying how out of my comfort zone I was...then they all replied with similar feelings about theirs...was amazing. #HackLearning
I must agree ... there are days some drive me crazy, yet daily they each get a fresh start ... I wish I had more patience so that I could give more compassion at the end of each day #HackLearning
A2 I would say being Emphatic and creating experiences that allow others students connect to the student feeling a need to compassionate action. This triggers an environment where each student feels safe and among. #HackLearning
A3 In a compassionate classroom, students see their common humanity. They accept struggle and give each other support, encouragement, and constructive feedback. They hold themselves and each other accountable for creating a positive learning environment. #HackLearning
Definitely important for Ts to be able to be vulnerable in front of their Ss as a way of modeling how you struggle and allow yourself to be supported and then overcome the obstacles in front of you. #HackLearning
A3: The atmosphere. Are students comfortable in your presence? Can you connect with them? How do they feel there?
You can change this with: smiling, seating options, and lighting.
Empower Ss. Embrace their personalities. Let them have a voice in how THEY learn. #hacklearning
A2 I think a compassionate teacher intentionally & deeply cares for all of his/her Ss both in & outside of the classroom, makes no assumptions about any Ss & chooses love @ all times #HackLearning
A2: When a student is struggling, you don’t make class content the priority. Everyone has “off days.” You do your best to help. But if it is beyond your scope, give the student a pass to the counselor, nurse, etc. Allow the student to call their parent. #HackLearning
I love this definition! Mostly because I know how much it has meant to me when others recognize what I need before I do and gently point it out to me. It makes me feel so known & understood. I hope to be able to give that same gift to others! #HackLearning
A3: One essential element: Acceptance. It's bigger than tolerance. Also, @EllenFeigGray and I share our principles for compassionate classrooms right here. #HackLearning
A3 A compassionate classroom is created for an by the Ss. It changes every year according to the Ss. Content does not drive the environment. Perhaps the Ss need an area to let out some energy and structured, designated areas for independent work vs. collaboration. #HackLearning
Some struggle "out loud" and this makes it easy for us to notice their need. How many are silent in their struggles? How many feel they aren't entitled to them because they have other privileges? Maybe our empathy and compassion can't be dependent on suffering. #HackLearning
I think suffering is just the easiest to recognize the need ... everyone needs compassion though because many hide their suffering (or are between sufferings) 💜 #HackLearning
A2) Not trying to self-promote here, but last week Meg’s story that some may have seen, restored my faith in how many compassionate Ts are among us. Here’s a storified version. #http://kentuckyschooltalk.org/2018/05/teachers-twitter-thread-went-viral-good-reason/ #hacklearning
A2: A compassionate teacher observes, connects, listens, and shows a sense of vulnerability with their students. They build a sense of family where every member has a voice and is able to coach & support each other to be their best versions of themselves. #hacklearning
A2: Compassion requires the ability to accept that each person has a perspective born out of personal experiences. So the same event will have a different effect and garner different reaction/emotions. Cultivate the differences. #hacklearning#gwinchat
#HackLearning A3: I can tell you what a compassionate classroom is not. No bullying. No making fun of each other. There is support. I try really hard to make my classroom a family environment.
Compassionate teachers don’t quantity their time, not because their time isn’t valuable but because they’re so invested, they’re not looking at the clock. #HackLearning
Suffering is the traditional definition of compassion. Angela and I believe everyone deserves to be treated with compassion, whether or not they are suffering. #HackLearning#CompassionateClassrooms
I think suffering is just the easiest to recognize the need ... everyone needs compassion though because many hide their suffering (or are between sufferings) 💜 #HackLearning
A3: The actual classroom being compassionate definitely takes practice: skill and nuance to offer compassion for all and the right compassion for each individual #hacklearning
A3) I get to see teachers creating compassionate classrooms by having morning meetings, creating that community feel, helping students show empathy toward others, and sharing their own vulnerabilies. #HackLearning
A2 a compassionate teacher has empathy. A compassionate teacher models resilience. I often do think alouds when I am working through something so my ss can “hear” what my brain is thinking. #HackLearning
A3: Compassionate classrooms do not keep students out. They do not operate in fear of disruptive students. They welcome the most challenging students because they recognize that they are the kids that need us the most. #hacklearning
I get what you are meaning, @mexusmx. You’re not saying that your focus is only on those who are going through stuff, but sometimes they’re a little more difficult to get warmed up to you. It’s a little more challenging. #hacklearning
#HackLearning A3: A compassionate classroom is also one where a teacher who senses there might be something wrong with a student today, asks the student if they are okay.
Mutual respect by and for everyone. Engaging activities with choice to show Ss their educational experience is important. A T who is understanding of other factors such as the impact of poverty. #HackLearning
A3: I don't think any classroom is compassionate ALL of the time, so it is extra important to call out the moments when we are falling short and re-norm. That creates the safety & standard. #HackLearning
A3: Classrooms where Ss and Ts work collaboratively to define and defend a safe space for thinking about and communicating all ideas for the purpose of learning. #hacklearning
I read once that you need to give kids a fresh start with each interaction - your answer reminded me of that, forgiveness is so important, and not taking behavior personally, and giving kids second, third, fourth chances... school is for learning, after all #HackLearning A2
A3: In a compassionate classroom, teachers respect their students... and students respect themselves and each other. We don’t always have to agree with one another, but with that respect comes understanding. #hacklearning
A3 I have adopted 2 goals above all in my classroom. I want my students to be happy and respectful. If I can accomplish that everything else will fall into place. #hacklearning
A3 I think the atmosphere/culture in your class has a big impact on comfort. Teachers need to model kindness, empathy, support and caring to have a good culture #HackLearning
Withholding judgment....I always see this as the marker of a seasoned, compassionate teacher. This can be so challenging when we feel compelled to "fix" problems. #HackLearning
A2) Ability to listen, focus on developing relationships, being nonjudgmental, seeing students in spite of behaviors, helping others through tough times. Happily, I get to see this daily. #HackLearning
A3: Compassionate classroom - open for Ss, T who allows conversation past the curriculum, structured yet accommodating to individaul needs. #hacklearning
#HackLearning Being responsive and proactive in classrooms can provide a much needed reprieve for some who have struggles at home or in other areas of the school.
A3: Ss must feel safe. Safe to make mistakes. Safe to not be bullied by other Ss in the class. They should know that you care about them as a person, not just their grade/behavior in your class. They must trust that you have their best interest in mind. #hacklearning
A3: Modeling the values of compassionate classrooms! Letting students know that all emotions are welcome and that we’ll always be there to support and learn from each other no matter what! #hacklearning
We will extend the chat this week on #HackLearningDaily ... will you join the conversation? Q1 on Mon (-Wed) and Q2 on Thurs (-Sat) ... as we apply our learning today, we grow together! #HackLearning
A1: Most compassionate teacher that I didn't actually take a class from let me come to his classroom every day during lunch for about a year to help me work through a tough time. Knowing how much I value my lunch period now, I'm amazed & grateful! #HackLearning
A2: Not trying to self-promote, but the response to Meg’s story last week restored my faith in how many compassionate Ts are among us. https://t.co/pJpMaKQveN#hackLearning
A3: Compassionate classroom - open for Ss, T who allows conversation past the curriculum, structured yet accommodating to individaul needs. #hacklearning
A3: Guiding students to BE compassionate helps the classroom atmosphere: giving them tools to be compassionate to each other and then growing that to the building and then outside of the walls #hacklearning
I try to remember how important those hard lessons were when my own children confront "non-examples" and I want to rush in and involve myself. Those struggles are teachers. #HackLearning
Yes, I have disliked some of my students. And the reality is that many teachers do. I think we need to be honest about that and not shame people for it if we're going to make progress. I'll be brave enough to say it. I'm human. Others are, too. :) #HackLearning
A3: All stories, voices are heard and valued. Lots of discussion. TIME to connect, to laugh, to share, to get “off topic”, my students described our classroom as having a particular ‘feeling’ built over time-culture of respect and trust, place where everyone thrives #HackLearning
A3: RESPECT!! Without respect and acceptance of our differences, the classroom becomes a smaller version of the societal cliques that have become the norm of all levels of schools. Teach Ss that it’s okay to be different. Take risks. Find their voice. #hacklearning#gwinchat
Some students are unkind. Some are abusive, even. We have to be real about that and about the fact that we are human and can be hurt, too. #HackLearning
Wonderful point, Gwena. Thanks for bringing extra value to today's #HackLearning chat. Hope you'll join us each #SundayMorning. We're trying to help educators reimagine teaching and learning.
Yes, becasue you can see it on their face, before they even tell you there is something going on. I had that a couple of weeks ago with a 3rd grader. The frustration on his face nearly broke my heart. #hacklearning
This is the kind of thinking that destroyed education, & MADE it #hacklearning
When an adult exploits what we have always known (youth is emotional) they are saying we don’t want students to EVER outgrow and overcome. Fight the #EducationalIndistrialComplex
Or your kids are lost!
A2: the key to compassion in teachers is understanding that a kid's emotional well being is far more important than her academic well being.
#hacklearning#CompassionateClassrooms
Damn I love the energy in your tweets about teaching & schools.
Do you wake up like that or does it require some sort of crank-handle to get it running every day?
#hacklearning
Thanks. I appreciate the gentle nudge from the group to start thinking about whether I need to expand or redefine when I begin to feel empathy for another. #HackLearning
Join #HackLearning chat May 27 at 8:30-9:00am EDT when Creed Anthony AKA "The Captain" @acjlist will be guest moderator leading chat on the "hacky" topic of End of the School Year.
It was really interesting for us to think about, because even during our most successful moments (and it was the same for our children) we struggled with things. Hard things. And people aren't quite as compassionate then. Assumptions are made. #HackLearning
If they’re not in a bubble, they may also have a misconception that “because I loved school, I’m in a great position to get kids to love school, too. And if they don’t, it’s not because of me.” #HackLearning
The problem is there are few teachers who actually understand what it is like to truly loathe school ... so many educators loved school as a kid and now have a hard time connecting with "those" kids who really don't care. #HackLearning
It actually goes deeper that way. No one is perfect, and that's okay. It can be more meaningful when we fail, reflect, come back, and work through the process together. That's real life! #HackLearning
Once again weiners,I must warn #hacklearning about RETROTONES.These little shits are playing dial tones in our faces, and ignoring us.Unacceptable!Ban RETROTONES.
