Welcome everyone! Looking forward to moderating tonight's

Hi all! Welcome to , excited for a great discussion with our
Nicki Brucki-4th Grade-Excited to be in Mrs. Ruane's chat!
Nicki here! Excited for this week's math chat!
Q1: Pre assessments are powerful in math, what types do you use and how do you use them?
A1: Tenmarks ass. are a great tool 2 determine where 2 focus lessons based on ss needs. Setting goals, generating curiousity!
A1: have always used unit pre tests. Love the assessments b/c of the great data I get back so quickly
A1: We use pre assessments to determine which skills are mastered and which need attention. Data driven instruction.
Getting kids excited about "flipping data" is still one of my favorite things!
A1 I have seen many forms of pre assessments - I like seeing Ts try different methods to uncover strengths and needs of Ss
Q2: How do you use formative assessments, both hi tech and low tech, to drive your math instruction?
A1: after the initial unit pre test I like to do a pre test with each small group that is more of a convo and hands on tasks
A2: Quick feedback, flexible grouping, ss self-reflection/assessment,variety in ss products that demo understanding.
A2: My favorite formative assessments are done is under a minute. Thumbs up, 1-5, circulating class, exit tickets
Padlet is always a good go to, I have a new one I am about to try called LetsRecap that looks promising too!
I'd like to see one of these in action : )
hey guys! come join if you can!
Q3: Assessments come in many forms. What are some non traditional assessments you have used?
Q3: PBL is great when appropriate but T's have to ensure it measures objectives! When kids can build/create, content=meaningful
Yes! No disrespect to TPT...love them for inspiration, but they often need to be tweaked : )
I'm almost home from work
A3: assessment can be a conversation with a small group or a task that you have a S do while you observe
Sorry to come in late! Katie from Chicago. Junior high interventionist.
Q4: Students should own their learning. How do you have Ss self-assess in math?
Q4: It is engrained in our practice, beginning of lessons, reflecting @ the end,1-4, teach others, ss deciding what they need!
A4: created a great scale for Ss to use to self assess - share here if you can later, Dina
A4: I have Ss self assess so much that they do it naturally and let me know what they need b4 I ask most of the time
That ownership is one of the greatest motivational tools we have...t's- don't be afraid 2 give up a little of it : )
Self assessment is critical! Journal writing, thumbs up / down, reflect before a summative assessment
and this is why I love you...have done the same thing. Last week I was in at the grocery store! LOL
Late is ALWAYS better than never D! : )
A4: I think having students teach their classmates is very powerful. It confirms understanding and boosts confidence.
Yes, and u gotta love those times where u find yourself thinking they r teaching a concept better than you! LOL
Q5: How do you use data from assessments? Do you include Ss in goal setting?
This is excellent! One thing to add to the blue column could be "I can teach others the concept"
This is SO great! https://t.co/c3iG5tJkQR
and this is why I love you...have done the same thing. Last week I was in at the grocery store! LOL
A5: I like to have Ss involved in understanding their summative & state assessments and helping set goals for growth
A5: I use data to determine if we need to visit earlier skills/fill gaps. Ss are involved in goal setting. Ownership is key.
That is the 4 on our scale! I don't have any pics.
