Hi. it's Christine from the Sunshine Coast. Math Educator, Sessional Instructor, and School Trustee. Love to hear about Revisiting ADST and how it's working in classrooms. #bccurric#bcedchat
Howard, 5 & 6 full inclusion (special ed/general ed) math science. Interested in Technology & making things. I've not seen any of the movies up for Best Picture, so I vote for Rocky. #bcedchat
Hi, #bcedchat I am Kyla, from Maple Ridge #sd42. I teach Grade 6/7 and areas of interest are many and include but are not limited to #SEL#selfReg#STEAM#ADST#literacy Hope for best picture is "Shape of Water" as I am del Toro fan and haven't seen enough to be more informed
Hi #BCEdChat, I am a pre-service teacher, studying at the University of Regina (currently in my last semester). I will be teaching high school Social Studies and ELA. Just heard about #ADST today, so am looking forward to learning more about it!
A1. I will be listening/reading the responses on this. I have not had the privilege to implement ADST in the K-12 classroom... but would love to know how it's going. I love the idea of diversifying learning for our students and educators. #bcedchat#bccurric
It’s has been even more than I thought it would be. Love that it embraces no tech and tech. I didn’t think it would take as long as it has to catch on though. A lot of fear it’s an add on for teachers. #bcedchat
A1: So far the rollout has seemed unsupported. A 1 day pro-d on coding isn't going to help a teacher with limited computer knowledge feel comfortable with teaching computational thinking. #bcedchat
A1: I am loving #ADST, but I'm not sure we're all on the same page about what it looks like, especially from K to 5 where there is no content. I am constantly having chats with Ts who don't know what to do with this programme. #bcedchat
A1: ADST has become way more than I expected! I see students engaged, taking risks. I never thought I’d be able to implement wood working or sewing like I have this year #bcedchat
A1: I'm finding that depending on the class, the computational thinking around ADST will be different. But supporting all my teachers is important (start where they are). #bcedchat

A1: I am so excited to be integrating it into the less obvious subjects - my students especially love it in the writting process - they refer to their drafts as prototypes! #bcedchat
Our board just hasn't supported this programme enough, they only give programming workshops and people doN't realise you doN,t need to be coding to do #ADST#bcedchat
ADST is about having an environment to tinker, to foster critical and creative thinking, to problem solve great things. Its about discovery and the wonder of discovery #bcedchat
Are we suppose to be on the same page? We will progress at different rates and directions. This is what I expect. However, I also expect that the general principles of ADST and the reasons WHY we are implementing ADST into K-12 classrooms are the same. #bcedchat

If you want a variety of workshops of #designthinking or my own model of W.E.D.E.S.I.G.NthINKing that is inclusive of Indigenous ways of knowing and naming the world, please do connect. #bcedchat#dtk12chat
A2 I’ve been integrating a range of coding “games” and activities through “T(ec)hursday challenges” on my virtual assignments page https://t.co/rNKxP0Rzge#bcedchat
ADST is not as easy as saying “by grade 2 students will.....” even though we are trying by having the same big questions over a couple of years #bcedchat
A2: Scratch/Lego WeDo + cardboard inventions. AI2 or Thunkable to make phone apps w/appinventor.org tutorials. https://t.co/c09CgU5SGb - think mario brothers and scratch. Has tutorials. #bcedchat
A2: Starting w/ @codeorg , moving to @ScratchJr, @scratch, then to @makeymakey and @LEGO_Education WeDo. It's all about building on our skills to tell stories, explain scientific concepts, & show our learning differently. And to reach Ss who learn differently #bcedchat
A2. Still listening/reading. I love what I'm reading so far. Lots of passion out there about ADST. I also love the learning. Keep sharing everyone. Lots are lurking and learning. #bcedchat
A1 The ADST course has given us free rain to teach some many intetesting things. We are running out various passion blocks through this title. #bcedchat
Even though I am passionate about design thinking, it is important to recognize that we need to teach other inquiry or thinking models as appropriate. #bcedchat
For me, coding is not necessarily computer-driven. You need to have that computational thinking aspect, which definitely does not need to have electricity to work #bcedchat@elaan thoughts?
A1: Yes, it is what I thought it would be because I have the freedom to make it that way. Also support form #sd42 with ADST kits that include- Cooking, STEAM, wood/metal working, Sewing and Coding #bcedchat Pro-D through @ScienceWorldTR also amazing support.
A3: I used a grid on the floor with tape and put images of places in some of the boxes. Students had to code one of their friends to follow the storyline and go from one place to another - they used clipboards with arrows for the code. #bcedchat
#bcedchat ADST is quite a broad curricular area (particularly High School) Because this is quite new for Elementary teachers, I tend advise to start small to begin with. ADST is also easily interweaved into other curricular areas much of which is hands-on learning.
A2 I love basing my course on my old manitoba robot wars days. We build tethered robots for sumo wrestling and they work on making them arduino run. We also use spheros and scratch programming #bcedchat
Yes, definitely it’s a way of thinking that does not need a computer to teach or practice. I wrote this post a few years ago. https://t.co/vfqFzbhpHT#bcedchat
A1: I haven't had first hand experience with #ADST, (not in #SaskCurriculum), but I've been learning about #coding and #technology for my #edtc300 class and am trying to learn more about how technologies are being implemented in different curricula #BCEdChat
A3. Wow... I might be listening/reading throughout this #bcedchat. I've read some examples already, like knitting. I love learning activities like this. Not all of us are techies. Diversity is good.
Still remember a time when a school I was at lost power - we didn’t know as we were composing GarageBand on iBooks and our router and server had UPSs #bcedchat only class to not know the power was out!
Yes yes! Seen a ton of knitting clubs and projects. And theres bracelets and wearable art. Some of these have moved into Junior Achievement teams #bcedchat
Q4: We hold an annual K-7 #MakerFaire@PacHeights36 incredible student inventions, tinkering, problem solving, design, experimenting. So many fantastic ways to incorp #ADST#bcedchat
check out cup coding. Use solo cups and write down operations that a need to be done by the user. We've done it a lot here @leclair_t has great examples of no-tech coding too!
A4 i think design thinking comes from the inquiry model more focus on sciences and math, it is more systematic. read design thinking by A.J @ajjuliani and john spencer #lauch#bcedchat
A4: Design thinking in science - playing with our predictions and trying to design new experiments to test them, lots of "I wonder" questions #bcedchat
A4: One issue is that the presentation of 'design thinking' is sometimes product design. ie: Design playground equipment for someone with a disability is product design. Design thinking begins w/ interviewing a person with a disability and finding out their needs 1/ #bcedchat
A1: Prior moving to BC, I was a MI trainer, so I'm actually able to use many of our critical thinking activities as ADST challenge, which is essentially STEAM challenges. #bcedchat
A4: Anytime a systematic approach is used I think it applies. Thinking like an engineer can be done for any subject. Even when you are laying out an essay or a presentation. Break it down, tackle each part, put it back together #bcedchat
I’ve really enjoyed bringing in Design thinking to many subject solos (to tear them down) from restaurant building in math to cardboard arcades and super hero/villain/lairs with many points in between (and very inclusive!) #bcedchat
A4 I have a design project attached to every chem, physics, sc tech and math units. I find this shows my students knowledge of out units the best #bcedchat
A4: Writting as a process that leads to a book - knowing your audience (empathy), figuring out the best way to reach them (problem), writing your drafts & reworking them (prototypes), reading to test audience and adjusting (testing), publishing + presenting #bcedchat
A4: The needs of the person drives the 'product' . Too often, I've seen people only talk with able-bodied classmates. There is no opportunity for empathy, feedback, or analysis. #bcedchat 2/
Q4: We hold an annual K-7 #MakerFaire@PacHeights36 incredible student inventions, tinkering, problem solving, design, experimenting. So many fantastic ways to incorp #ADST#bcedchat
A2: It's not all about coding...I think people who are not familiar with it though, think that it is. An idea to work through that resistance is to organize a #hackathon! Having a multitude of ideas and backgrounds coming together, helps to familiarize everyone. #BCEdChat
I think it's called Float your Boat. We have secondary/elementary design teams (one box, 1 roll ducktape/per). Goal get 2 pple row length of swim pool. #bcedchat
A3: prior to all the lit bot or scratch, I was already creating classroom size mazes with chairs and tables, then setting obstacles which the kids have to maneuver through. Also the S going through the obstacle maze would be blindfolded. #bcedchat
A4/ That being said, we can isolate different 'phases' of the design thinking process to teach the skills and knowledge for a particular strategy. That won't happen if the focus is on getting to the maker-ed part . #bcedchat 3/
A3/A4: My 5th gr's covered 'gravity'. Circled back to build Air Rockets & launch phone running Google Science App. It will record & graph Change in y-axis. Bought pool noodle today. Finished code in (AI2) for an Altimeter using Tan-got help from the HS math guy. #bcedchat
A4 @CarrieAntoniazz gave a great #designthinking workshop at the super conference. I have used her ideas multiple times in the classroom. We also do cooking, design build challenges, and some hand sewing. #bcedchat
A4: Writting as a process that leads to a book - knowing your audience (empathy), figuring out the best way to reach them (problem), writing your drafts & reworking them (prototypes), reading to test audience and adjusting (testing), publishing + presenting #bcedchat
A5 ADST has been inclusive in that it allows students to go in directions that they are passionate about. Exclusive in that not all teachers are comfortable with that. #bcedchat
A3: another cool activity that my Ss love is creating an entrapment maze and hanging bells to challenge them going through the maze without ringing the bells. #bcedchat
A5. Continuing my passive participation in tonight's #bcedchat but I love what I am reading. It sounds like ADST is inclusive. Would love to hear more.
A5: so many students that struggle with the so-called “typical” classroom model thrive w/ #ADST - I also appreciate that it’s about the process of learning, not always a focus on an end product #bcedchat
A4: I've been experimenting with textile. Wetfelting and burlap sewing. A lot of fine motor practice for Ks, but once they see the results. They jump back up and want to make another one! #bcedchat
Ss created a bath bomb..soap or other item using hydrocarbons and then created ads and packaging and tried to sell it to each other. Labels include chem names and % composition and more. #bcedchat
Exploratory. More learning happens if they don't know what they are supposed to get. But of course some understanding of the skills needed to get there #bcedchat

A5 can be segregating for teachers and students who are not passionate about high tech. I try to bring them in with no tech options like knitting and carpentry. #bcedchat
A2: It's not all about coding...I think people who are not familiar with it though, think that it is. An idea to work through that resistance is to organize a #hackathon! Having a multitude of ideas and backgrounds coming together, helps to familiarize everyone. #BCEdChat
A5: So inclusive! Ss can choose their material, their passion, their way of sharing, and decide how big or small their project with be. I have 100% buy in from my Ss and they ask for it! They love the challenge, that it's 'hard work' and that there are many solutions! #bcedchat
A5 love that my modified G student has been able to do parallel activities (including a great cardboard arcade station based on captain underpants & a great super hero currently) same as my high achieving gel-pen girl! #bcedchat
A5: I think its inclusive. Because it's so discovery-based and applicable to many ideas and intelligences I think many people would find it relatable #bcedchat
A5: ADST really challenges every one of the CCs to the extreme, esp when you need to work as a team to achieve the best results. Even when I did wet felting with my class, the class created indiv design, then I took an idea from each to collab create a big piece. #bcedchat
If you are designing a process, service or product with a person and addresses their needs then that is #designthinking. If you are creating something to address your need to bring something to an "authentic audience" then that is more product design. #bcedchat#dtk12chat
Check out the arduino lilypad. We've used them for wearable technologies. Can be done quite simply or more complicated with coding specific sensors. #bcedchat
I found that it was difficult in september, until they realised there was no right answer, that they can use google to help them along, and that the process is more important - but took lots of reinforcing! #bcedchat
A3: Going back to the basics -- Rubix Cubes are great for no-screen #coding! -- Learning to recognize patterns, there's no secret knowledge about how to solve it, it's hands-on, and improvement comes with time and practice. #BCEdChat
A6: I think everything we teach should involve play, imagination, creativity, problem solving & exploration! Kids need to play, adults need to play! #bcedchat
Check out twine for creating choose your own adventures. Uses basic HTML coding but easy for kids to grasp and has a fun gamification element to it! #bcedchat
A6. I am hoping there is a lot of PLAY in ADST. Let me listen/read what the #bcedchat PLN have to say. It seems that ADST lends to play. Play is a way of learning. We need to do it more often regardless of ADST. Learning should be fun.
#bcedchat My mon-linear WEDESIGN thinking that includes driven by the user, inclusive of systems thinking, innovation (agile thinking), and reflection. #dtk12chat
#sd33learns For human-centred design thinking follow #dtk12chat running on our 5th year ... Lots of models but here is mine, the original circular model version 2.
Definitely some importance in giving some free time to let learner brains work without so many guidelines (my class liked a ‘boredom break’ I recently scheduled) #bcedchat
A5 ADST makes it more inclusive in my opinion because there is no right or wrong. The are iterations and changes. A continual cycle of improvement. #bcedchat
A6: So much play! It's how we learn, how we remember - we seem to start education this way, then move out of it. The Lifelong Kindergarten group at MIT had the right idea - every grade should look like kindergarten!!! #bcedchat
A6: I second this! My fear with ADST is setting my Ss up for failure where I do not have the resources to support them. I had anxious Ss who were excited at the start but gave up easily when it didn't go as planned. The collaboration from other Ss was powerful. #bcedchat
A7 I don’t like to evaluate the final product at all. The process is more valuable. Glad my school moved away from letter grades. ADST should not have a letter grade! #bcedchat
#bcedchat My non-linear WEDESIGN thinking that is driven by the user, inclusive of systems thinking, innovation (agile thinking), and reflection. #dtk12chat

ADST is soooooo #inclusive!!! Every challenge, I do a briefing, mid check-in (or multiple check-ins), and debriefing... and if needed we redo it again to give 2nd chances and debriefing again!!! #bcedchat
A7: I am using lots of videos, photos and students presentations (we use @freshgrade). I always share the criteria before the activity so there are no suprises, so students know what to focus on, what they will reflect on after, and the best way to show their learning. #bcedchat

A7: I don't assess it every time, some things just for the engagement, or Ss self-assess, or verbal throughout the process, or class does a quick assess after final product presented. Lots of pictures, videos, reflecting and sharing. #bcedchat
My youngest would be all over that! Just picked out some @lushcosmetics bath bombs for her birthday tomorrow! #bcedchat hmmm great Mother’s Day project...!!

@rilmcknight, @mrsclark87, @lushcosmetics
A6: to me ADST should be ALL play and authentic play when engaging in the process. That's how they create, try, error - mid check-in, then polish design and recreate again! It's a spiral of learning!! #bcedchat
A8. Heard some great examples so far. Any others? Love how ADST has provided educators an opportunity to experiment, explore, and innovate... and empower students to do the same. #bcedchat
A7 Assessment thru self reflection, core competencies. Redesign process allows for reflective thought, problem solving explanations. Ss get better at explaining their thinking process #bcedchat
I don't think it's different. Ss need to know where they are going, no matter what subject it is. What is different: that the process is the criteria, not the finished product! Ss take ownership for the steps along the way and find how to share them w/ photos or videos #bcedchat

A5: I think #ADST has the means and ability to be inclusive if educators receive proper training and supports, otherwise it could be segregating. It starts at the top right? If some teachers are(n't) trained properly, there is potential for disconnect. #BCEdChat
A8: Personal Responsibility, specifically self-determination. #ADST skills build resilience. It teaches our students to value the process, to reflect on initial designs, to not give up if they aren’t successful the first few times #bcedchat
A8 It should be blended. Gr 6/7 students at my school designed tools that could have in prehistoric times and 3D printed them. (More went into it, I’m simplifying!) #bcedchat
Do you think this is true at the secondary level? Or have we been shifting in our assessment practices that it's the same? I wonder about the A, B, C's in grading versus focusing on competencies and process. Thoughts on this? Curious. #bcedchat

A8 My gr 8 students teaching physic 11 students how to use spheros for their speed and velocity labs. This was an amazing example of how coding goes across years and that age doesnt limit your knowledge growth #bcedchat
A8 - Using open ended questions in mathmatics, students find multiple solutions then have to choose which one is the best for them - which one allows them to find a correct answer in a reasonable amount of time - this will be different for many questions #bcedchat

Big thank you to everyone taking part in tonight’s #bcedchat got me thinking of some projects to get ready for my kids (bath bomb!!) speaking of which....
Just a heads up that seasoned teachers and students struggle with the ambiguity of a 'right answer' and the focus on process and not product. #dtk12chat#bcedchat
A6: Incorporate as much play as possible in #ADST. The more engaged students are in their learning, the more they will understand, and the more they will remember. #BCEdChat
I don't have much experience at the secondary level, but I would like to see the focus moved from A,B,C grading to constructive, timely comments - research proves this works better. I get that Ss need grades for university, but maybe the entire system needs to shift? #bcedchat
A8 I began my ADST class this year with drawing a map of the school and outlining all the play areas. We talked about design thinking and researched playground planners. Socials studies mapping blended with design thinking #bcedchat
#bcedchat I'm wondering what supports teachers are looking for in terms of the ADST Curriculum (Elementary & Middle School)? For PSA support there seem to be multiple that may support ADST, so as a teacher which one would one choose?🤔

Q10 - I want to better integrate it into social studies! I find it is quite similar to the creative process in the new art programme, so it's fun to compare both with Ss #bcedchat
Thanks Carrie. Grades are limiting in terms of describing student learning. Thanks for replying. Agreed. Grades needs re-evaluation and re-consideration. #bcedchat

My favourite is trying to get to “deep play” which takes about 45 minutes with kids not knowing when it will actually end....tricky in a bell-dominated schedule! #bcedchat
We have a technology district teacher, yes! I have started very small with my students, but as a new teacher sometimes even the small projects are daunting with complex social emotional learning needs. I want to support the best I can! #bcedchat
