Our 5th grade team created a student created and run city. Ss had to develop laws, businesses, and a bank system. Then they got to bring their city to life! It’s was amazing! #learnLAP
A1. I loved having my students create in my class. One of the last assignments was one where the students had to create a species for a mystery planet. The Ss talked about adaptations and habitats of the organism. SO MUCH FUN. #LearnLAP
A1 well as a Principal this is a little different for me, but I saw a T give a lesson on students creating TedTalks and it was great. The kids spoke to their passions #Learnlap
A1: I had the opportunity to work in a grade 1/2 classroom this past semester and I learnt so many amazing things from my teaching mentor! I her use of videos to reinforce content! #learnLAP
A1 Still feeling a little mad here with over a week left! This year I tried to create more experiences, not just activities. Ss loved being blood cells and CDC investigators. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP. There were 2. Ss asked if we could learn how to dance the salsa - so we did! Also Ss were required to do a major PBL presentation. The majority dreaded it, but most reflected that it was one of their favorite activities, that I should definitely do it again next year!
A1: The activity that my student most enjoyed was our “passion projects” in which they got to pick a topic that they were passionate about and create a way to share it with the world. It was fun seeing their passions and showing them ways to connect with others. #LearnLAP
A1: Students blew themselves away when they presented their spoken word pieces on political issues they were passionate at our Free Speech Poetry Slam. It was a wonder for me too watching them become something more than they knew they could be! #LearnLAP
A1: I added a mystery bag to a lesson on Federalism. Throughout the lesson I gave characteristics of Federalism which hinted at the contents of the bag (Oreos) and then we used the Oreos to show he meaning of Federalism. #learnlap
Hey everyone! My name is Nikki and I teach 5th grade!
I love everything Alice in Wonderland!! It is my classroom theme!! The Mad Hatter is my favorite!! #LearnLAP
A1: In the fall I taught comp sci. I love Imitation Game and it is SO important to their understanding of both tech and social justice. They can tell you all about the first computer and are appalled when an S who hasn’t had me doesn’t know what a hero Alan Turing is! #LearnLAP

A1 when studying characterization we had a S write a murder mystery participation play. Ss received brief character information and had to create detailed backgrounds and relationships to interact. It was amazing. No one guessed the correct killer. #LearnLAP
A1: The 9th grade poetry unit this year was a lot of fun. The students analyzed poems of their choosing and created motion poems. They created blogs for their favorite poems, analyzed them and connected them to artistic works. #learnlap
My 6th Graders in GREAT (Gang Resistance Education And Training) put on a dance and raised over $1,300 for a kindergartner who is battling cancer. I was so impressed by their dedication and hard work! #learnLAP
A1: I surprised my Ss each week with a new S selected theme. The room was decorated and we had background music for the theme. I also provided a driving question to go along with each theme. #learnlap
A1: as a way to show their own use of theme, literary devices, and creativity, my 10th graders created a children’s book. They loved it! #LearnLAP#READ5305
A1 I started the year with "Lucky Leprechaun" Ss had to find a 4 leaf clover, then talk about strategies used to find it as well as perserverance. It ended with a bag of lucky charms. Yum! #LearnLAP

What experience/lesson did you create that filled your students with wonder?
#LearnLAP#EduGIFs
A1 Any time that I was able to have reading-based game days for my RTI groups, especially after state testing was over. #LearnLAP That’s when I could see their enjoyment of reading shine through!
A1: As an administrator I get to observe lots of cool lessons. I love seeing creating. I had a teacher making pull toys and robots this year. So cool to see teacher crest great lessons and kids create great projects! #LearnLAP
A1 - My kiddos say that a few of their favorite experiences this year (that filled them with wonder) were Cardboard Challenge, Global School Play Day, and entering the Inventor's Challenge from @imagination! #LearnLAP
A1: This isn’t huge, but when I told the Ss about how the US had treated the Chinese and Japanese, they wondered why they hadn’t heard about this and whether that kind of cruelty could happen again... #Learnlap
A1:
We did an improvisation lesson based on the Rashomon format--telling the same story from different points of view. It was two weeks ago when we all wanted to give up in exhaustion, and the Ss LOVED IT!! #LearnLAP
A1 In social studies incorporating poetry i our westward expansion unit. It was eye opening for Ss to write poetry from different perspectives #LearnLAP
A1. When we did our chromatography with nature using rose petals, leaves, various types of each. The S were amazed to see the diff. colors that were present in each substance! After they learned this tech. is a way of ident. and purif. for substances using var. types #learnlap
A1: We experience wonder almost every day in our Kinder class...not driven by me, but driven by my students’ curiosity and passion for inquiry and play! #LearnLAP
A1- My Ss love Mystery Hangouts- Ss have a lot of questions afterwards- They want to see where the place is, and what it looks like! #GoogleEarth#learnlap
This is a great idea! I did something similar to this in high school! We then shared our stories with elementary students! So beneficial for everyone! #LearnLAP
A1: I created this insanely complex year-in-review scavenger hunt my students have been begging me for more clues for. It's incredible, but also incredibly time consuming to develop, but oh so worth it! #learnlap
Q2: “I'm late, I'm late, I'm late.”

A1: It was my mission to find literature that my students would connect with. They filled out “what I’d love for my teacher to know” survey & I used that information to help select texts. We discussed themes that were important to them & had never been addressed before #learnLAP

#LearnLAP
A1: I want to focus on building positive relationships with my Ss. As a new teacher, I definitely have a learning curve, but I am excited to begin this new chapter in my journey. #learnlap
A2: I have already begun to schedule Google Expeditions! We are taking a virtual trip to Angel Island using @SkypeClassroom I teach in a small rural community so the kids are going to LOVE it! #LearnLAP
A2: Something that I am dying to try in the classroom as soon as possible is @geniushour ! I just love the idea of giving ss the opportunity to follow a passion they have! #LearnLAP
A1: I’d like to say that it was their Thinkery time. It was a specific time set aside for them to explore their passions. There were no “rules” kids had the opportunityto just explore. #LearnLAP
A2). I have got to do a better job and curbing our absenteeism. My goal for next year is to call (or stop by) a Ss house when they are OSSed to make sure they know they are missed and cared about. #learnLAP
A2: one thing I want to do better about next year is daily independent reading! It's so crucial, but easy to put aside when state testing rolls around #LearnLAP
A2: I began dabbling with #gamification late in the school year & want to pursue a year long narrative game alongside the core content of my course. I'm hoping to spend some time this summer weaving the narrative, content & optional quests together #learnlap
A2: I did a lot to differentiate this year but several of my colleagues are facilitating self paced classroom and I’m already so excited to figure out how to make that work for my learners!!! #LearnLAP

A2: HYPERDOCS! I've never used them before but after @DeemAlysia and @PHausTech did a great presentation on them, I have designed two to start next year with (1 for 6th grade and 1 for 7th). Excited to see how they work!! #learnlap
A2: I am going to go back to having my student collaborate on the class procedures and atmosphere starting on day #1. I liked the ownership the students took in the class. #learnlap
A1 We did several project/experiences which were meaningful: East of Eden Timshel Bucket Lists, Guest from The Old Globe, some stduents' first time seeing theater, a visit to the Museum of Tolerance #LearnLAP
A1: We did a Neon Read to examine nonfiction text complete with blacklights, glow decorations, and flashlights! Same lesson we would've taught that day anyway but a thousand times more engaging! #LearnLAP

A1: I had my students create a book about their families. Each book was published kindergarten style and then each student presented their book to the class! They absolutely loved publishing their own book! #LearnLAP#edu5213SBU
A2: We are a 6-12 building so over the summer I will be hand writing a note to every 6th graders to put in their locker for the first day of school; I also want to eat lunch with MS kids more and take time to play at recess! #LearnLAP
A2: I want to provide even more flexibility in our classroom...snack time, arrangement and rearrangement if furniture, seating preferences driven by students, Genius Hour. #LearnLAP
A2: I want to try some Smart STARTS to get the year going to encourage tam work and build a learning community within my classroom. Using frayer a classmate and the cardboard challenge. #learnlap
A2: I want to use either FlipGrid or Voxer as a way of doing reflection and discussion. This time, not giving the Ss a choice to opt out. If they hate it at the end if Q1 we’ll find some other vehicle. #learnlap
A2 - I'm a HUGE fan of having students set & track goals using @sowntogrow but never made the change from binders to this website! I'll be doing so in August next school year! Can't wait any longer! :) #LearnLAP

A2: I feel like our primary focus is to remediate struggling readers. I really want to provide extension opportunities for our advanced readers as well. I’d like to be more proactive rather than reactive with our LA instruction. We have to stop “changing the subject” #learnLAP
A2 Improve my HyperDocs. I ❤️ tailoring them to individual Ss, goals, and TEKS - but I want to make sure I’m not just creating digital worksheets! #LearnLAP
Our middle school art teacher does that, ending in a ceramics Pie Guy created by each student from their story and drawings. Love their work. #LearnLAP
A2b: My wife @LBStrunk teaches 1st grade and we are talking about using Seesaw & Flipgrid to let her 1st graders and my 7th grade remediation block for English be penpals! #learnlap

Our school does a home visit for every incoming freshman over the summer to hand deliver their schedule and a school T-shirt. It’s a mix of teacher, admin, and student volunteers. I’m new to the school but I’m told it’s very successful in making Ss feel welcome! #LearnLAP

A2:
I want to get my students making models of sets, and designing some costumes. We can't do that right when we get back, but my goal is to plan everything this summer, so I am beyond prepared. Then we can ease right into them when the time comes. #LearnLAP
A1 I exposed my Ss to the course curriculum and then asked them what sparks your interest? What do you want to learn? How do you want to learn it and once you have learned it what will you do with the info? I am pretty sure there was a lot of wondering!! #learnlap
Q2: “I'm late, I'm late, I'm late.”

#LearnLAP
A4: we build on each other’s strengths. I don’t do mental math. At all. So I ask them for help. I ask tech questions too. Like what button did my 2 year old daughter press to make my font huge and squished together?!!! We didn’t figure it out but the tech guy did! #LearnLAP
A3: Celebrate their differences and give each student a chance to explore what they are passionate about. Focus on creating a culture that is supportive, understanding and not afraid to express their voice. It starts with us! #learnlap
A3: I think it's important to encourage different ways of learning/knowing! Giving ss the opportunities to showcase their knowledge in their own way is great! I also love the idea of giving ss choices! #LearnLAP
A3 I have the luxury of teaching in a moderate-severe unit & my students and I create a class constitution. It’s not about the label; it’s about who Ss are and what they can do! #learnlap
A3: I'm all about encouraging my kids to let their freak flag fly. Modeling that it's perfectly OK to nerd out about things, get excited about things other people think are dumb, etc... That takes time and effort in getting to know your students as individuals. #learnlap
A3 I ❤️having lunch w/ my Ss at least once a week, attend their extra curricular activities, learn about their cultures, and play basketball w/ them. #learnlap

#LearnLAP#EduGIFs
A3: Set up groups with varied learning styles. Ask students to suggest new methods/apps for showing learning. Allow them to incorporate their interests in class activities. Talk about your interests, too! Let them see that you have other interests as well. #learnlap
We couldn't do it on test days themselves, but I firmly believe daily independent reading the rest of the year was crucial to student achievement on those tests. Like Diffendoofer Day. #LearnLAP
A3: I use Kagan strategies to promote community building and relationships within my classroom. I also have a daily oral language block where Ss answer specific questions based on the topic. I also have a share chair where students can share good things! #LearnLAP#edu5213SBU
#learnlap A3: We decide as a class what our classroom expectations should be and all sign them and they hang in the room. We also spend a lot of time learning about one another at morning meetings!
Structuring groups strategically so Ss can help engage and encourage each other. Having manipulatives, charts and accommodated work available to help with struggling learners as well as extension work for fast ones.

A3 I spend the first 2 weeks of school focused on learning about each other. By the end of the year Ss know I am a little nutty! When I dressed up like a CDC scientist name Dr. Jenner (w/a southern accent) they just went with it #LearnLAP
A3 Meeting the needs of diverse learners requires addressing the “WHOLE” child. Often times Ss come to us with “HOLES” and we have to get on their level. We must continue to dig deep and get to know Ss where they are at! ☠️👊🏼 #LearnLAP
A3 Genius Hour, Choice in Assessment Types, Grade Conferences at the end of semesters, Saying YES to students' ideas & permission requests ("Can I use...?" "Can I try...?") #LearnLAP
A3 My classroom is diverse due to the fact that I work with English Language Learners. In addition to their cultural diversity they also have diverse learning styles and needs. Differentiation is not just a nice thing to use; it is a necessity. #learnlap
A1: Late arrival but here! I believe one learning experience I created was having a face painting activity to help Ss understand the psychology of masks as we studied Lord of the Flies. Here's one of a S that picked "scary" & me in my mask behind him. #LearnLAP
A2: I have never been able to get to fully planned out flipped lessons. I am working on the planning and resources now and experimenting on my summer course students. #LearnLAP
A2 I hope to look at what worked this year and what didn't work and try to implement the best version of inquiry in my classroom. I hope to have weekly sharing groups as well as look for more adult volunteers for my classroom to help support PBL. #learnlap
A3: Truly get to know your Ss: their strengths, areas to grow, things that make them curious, what makes them passionate, what frustrates them. I also try to be cognizant of various learning modalities and honoring that everyone may need something a little different. #LearnLAP
A3: I obtained an ELL endorsement, and I plan on reading "Other People's Children". I am thinking about doing an identity text at the beginning of the year which is a presentation about their ethnicity, interests, etc. #learnlap
A3: have the students interact with one another, know each other’s names, understand each others passions. One thing I want to start at the beginning of the year is a passion wall for students to post the things that interest them. #learnlap
A3 #LearnLAP I have the chance to work with 8 unique, multi-age groups a day for up to 30 minutes, and each group has different needs and confidence levels. I build a rapport and trust with my students so they are not afraid to make mistakes/grow as readers.

A3 You must start by celebrating diversity and differences! Sharing about culture, selecting literature that represents a variety of people, passions, and interests, and incorporating personal passions into the daily workings of the classroom #learnlap
I was fortunate enough that one of our high school teachers was in a POW camp as a kid herself. She and parents of fellow students who had been interred talked to us in the '70s. Invaluable. #LearnLAP
A3) I love morning meetings that allow students to do 2 things: share with one another and have fun with each other/ teambuild It helps make the classroom a clear community #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A3 Good Evening. Joining late after a #school event. A community of diverse learners is fostered by the idea that our strengths complement each other. We focus less on weaknesses when we see what our combined strengths can do. #middleschool
A3: the best things I’ve seen teacher do to hike Community is show their kids that they truest care about them as people. This becomes contagious for everyone. Taking time to help every on the class get to know each other in a personal level is critical! #LearnLAP
A3: building a culture of trust by working on relationships through kagan strategies and #eduprotocols like #frayerafriend that aren’t content related #LearnLAP
To play off of that I want to do a mystery bag lesson where every students brings something in and places it in a brown paper bag and we try to guess who the item relates to and why. #learnlap
A3. The goal is for our ELL Ss and other minority Ss to celebrate who they are and what they bring to the table. Share about their differences in holidays, lifestyles, etc. Every Ss should be proud of their ethnicity and who they are! #learnlap

A4: I think it's very important to communicate with students and make your goals clear! Rubrics are great for laying out goals and expectations! #LearnLAP
A4: the objectives are through Google Classroom as we begin a unit where Ss respond to a question. It’s also on their summative assessment and rubric #LearnLAP
A3: The only way that I have found that has worked for me is being weird myself. When you celebrate weirdness, it makes the Ss feel comfortable at being themselves. #learnlap
A4: I put it on the board. I also like to open up by saying, "Okay here is my plan of attack." There are those who don't like the analogy of teachers "working in the trenches," but I am a believer that everyday we go to war against ignorance in our classrooms! #learnlap
A4: As a history teacher, I feel this is easy for my students and me. I state objective and importance before every lesson. Sometimes, I ask the students why they think this lesson will be important and have them share out. #LearnLAP
Even seeing my kinder classes once a week, this is how we start. Building relationships, listening to each other, is crucial. Also, it's a great way for anyone who lost a tooth, got a puppy, went swimming, to share. #LearnLAP
A3: I’m myself, I greet, and I make time for all of them. We have fun!! It’s all about building relationships and making connections. That’s the root of the root! #LearnLAP
A4: I do a combination of projecting the schedule throughout the day, writing "I can..." statements on the board & writing the skill (for math) on the board before they take notes. #LearnLAP Sometimes, I don't like to spoil the plan though & they find out when it's discovered! :)
A3: It’s all about relationships. When students like each other, a community evolves. I try to model and have tiny short lessons on how I want them to talk to each other, how to be supportive or each other. #LearnLAP
A4 would love to hear what everyone is doing here. I think we need to be more proactive of involving our students in this process. What are you doing people? #Learnlap
We discuss our objectives as we begin each unit, it is part of the lesson introduction. I like telling my Ss what we are doing and why we are doing it. They really seem to enjoy the "insight information".

#LearnLAP#EduGIFs
HI, LAURA! You toally snuck in here! Off with her head! JK! Okay... you can keep your head, but only because that picture is WAY scarier than mine! LOL!!!! 🔹☠️✨#LearnLAP
A4 I post objectives each day on the white board, in Google Classroom, QR code by the door. I want to build anticipation and create excitement. #LearnLAP
Q4: I take the last part of our morning meeting to introduce new learning stations or activities. In my daily interactions with my class I learn quickly what they do and don't like. I take time to incorporate that in my planning and let them know I was listening. #learnlap
A3: We coteach (ESL teacher & classroom teacher) to meet the needs of our diverse students. We also build a culture of encouragement! Mindset matters & impacts achievement. #LearnLAP
A4: I absolutely involve my Ss in the decision making process. I found that when I provided my Ss with an opportunity to share their voice & then again to make choices, they were much more engaged. “Ss don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” #learnLAP
A4 Because so much was experimental this year, I was explicit in my intentions, smaller goals, processes, and year-end purpose. I asked students for input & the year was better for it. We were a team (and only at times did I have to be coach). #LearnLAP
Q4: I hook and engage first, unwrap and show objectives later. Everything is transparent as Ss create connections to and between objectives before they ever see them in writing #LearnLAP
A4) I try and communicate by breaking down barriers. I joke, I laugh, I stand on desks, dress like a knight. I’m also at almost every school event. Humor is my key to showing Ss that I’m a human first. Once a relationship is made, everything else falls into place! #learnLAP
A4 At the end of each course I plan to sit with all of my Ss and get their ideas on how to make the course better. I am fortunate that I get a lot fo the same Ss back again. It is their class, I want their input, I am very transparent. #learnlap
A4: I let Ss in pick some of the activities or tools we use for each unit. Our district mandates horizontal alignment so we can’t have differing objectives, but I try to roll with their comprehension level on a daily basis. #learnlap
A4: I share the learning target and purpose for learning. The targets are posted and refer back to them when needed. Students need to understand the purpose to gain a deeper understanding. #LearnLAP#edu5213SBU
A4 I share the learning targets with my Ss and then they come up with the ways that they would like to achieve the targets. I've found that when the students have a say in the activities they tend to me more engaged. #learnlap
Yes! @jcorippo and @mhebern developed an awesome way to use the Frayer model and created an #EduProtocols and explain it in their book! It's great! Can't explain in a tweet. Too many words. :) Will dig up my pic of it. #LearnLap
A3:
We perform under the idea that we are trying to make our acting partners look the best they can on stage. We spend two weeks just building class ensemble/community. I'm not sure if I have activities specifically meant to celebrate diversity. I need to think on that. #LearnLAP
A4: I write the plan for the day on the board. But additionally, I schedule time to ask them for ideas for apps to use, etc in the next unit. We always discuss it and come to a consensus on how the class would like to proceed. It worked really well this Spring. #learnlap
#LearnLAP A4 depends on the lesson. Some start with a hook. Others students read the objectives aloud after our daily warm up. With the new NGSS it will be through a phenomenon.
A4: I place guiding questions on my wall for some lessons. Other lessons I let the students come@up with the questions after an introductory lesson. #LearnLAP
Exactly. I need to see if there are oral histories preserved online for secondary kiddos. It was one of the most important experiences of my education. #LearnLAP
I’m attending a 2 day digital learning summit being offered by my school division. Ts and ITS are presenting various topics showing how to integrate technology into instruction. #learnLAP
A4: As a teacher, I always made sure my students knew what we were doing, why we were doing it, what skills they would be developing and how those skills would help them in college/a career. #LearnLAP
A4– overarching goals are shared through my mission statement I had out to students (thanks, @JoyKirr) and I also have students read learning goals. In fact, some sing the learning goal for the day. Other classes have chanted the learning goal! #LearnLAP
A4: Learning targets on the board helps provide clear directives for students, and helps hold teachers accountable to what the outcome should be! Also, share out time at the end of the lesson to talk about what was learned and how it will continued to be built on. #LearnLAP
My favorite lesson this year was a Mad Hatter Main Idea Party. The entire 5th grade traveled though Wonderland (aka my portable) to find multiple main ideas of passages. My teammate and I dressed like Alice and tried to speak in British accents! 😂 The kids loved it! #learnlap
A4: I do it pretty informally - at the start of a block I give a plan for a few days so they get why today is important. At the end I restate the plan. It’s almost a question at that point. If I see they’re stressed/overwhelmed I’ll ask for input on what needs to change #LearnLAP

A4 I share the Ss friendly learning target(s)throughout the lesson and as part of the reflection piece. I also make sure they are making real life connections. #learnlap
A3: I use exercise on empathy w one card that has fear about something in society, politics, & govt and card that has a hope. I randomize the cards and pass back out for Ss to read quietly and ponder. Then take vols to share thoughts or what they put on card and why. #LearnLAP

What is your favorite way to help students visualize their learning and have meaningful conversations about it?
#LearnLAP#EduGIFs
A4: I leave a math formula on the board w/o mentioning it and begin to teacher, build, scaffold our way to understanding it. Then I explain the formula to tie it all together. I find this helps the various disabilities I encounter in class. #LearnLap#DiffEdu
A4: Schoolwide we have our CLAW on the board. C=I Can statement, L=Learning Assessment, A=Agenda, W= Why? or What's Next? (We're War Hawks, so that's where CLAW came from.) Anyway, I go over the CLAW daily, so students always know where we are and where we're going. #LearnLAP
A4 Classrooms have a daily schedule. Then morning message that can be very general to specific when special events are happening that day. #LearnLAP for young children knowing what’s next, what’s happening let’s them focus on the “doing” and not the what’s next.
A1: Probably my Red Scare unit where we play “Find the communist”. Students were very curious about what happened to those falsely accused. Some really good conversations were born out of it. #LearnLAP
A4: I ask my Ss what theme they want to learn. The objectives for the week are posted by content area on the board. We review these before each class. #learnlap
A4: I make sure the plan for the day is posted before they come in. Now, if there’s something I don’t want them to know just yet, I’ll write a little something that keeps them intrigued. I 💗 those days! #LearnLAP
A5: I love having students answer thought provoking questions by creation. Then the students share out with @Screencastify.
One of my favorite things to do is to have two Ss who have different views create a screencastify, state their claims and prove their points. #learnlap

What is your favorite way to help students visualize their learning and have meaningful conversations about it?
#LearnLAP#EduGIFs
I try to have informal conversations with Ss so that we can see what, how and why they are learning something. We do a lot of brainstorming with whiteboards in my classes #learnlap
A3: pt2 I also talk to other faculty about remembering Ss are individuals with hopes, needs, gaps, challenges and talents. Always look past content to see the person. #LearnLAP
A5: We have to get out of their way! If we give enough wait time, and let Ss think things over, they will ask better questions than we ever could have written. Or, they will create a plan to bring learning to life! #LearnLAP
A4. I like starting out with questions to address that make the Ss think! Stir up their curiosity before letting them know the plan of attack for the day! Can they figure out the topic? #learnlap
Q4: Mine is rather old school but I like to do original anchor charts with my class. I sometimes do the same ones year after year but I don't recycle - I want each class to experience doing them together. Then we can refer to it through the year when needed. #learnlap
A5: I like having my Ss create graphic organizers and think about what they are learning. I want to tailor my instruction to different learning styles. #learnlap
A5: oh my! We don’t have time. Novels / stories are my specialty in teaching. I bring the novel to the Ss. Ss put themselves into the story by understanding the characters #LearnLAP
A5) I love focusing on project based learning. Let the kids guide the lesson and go with it! I am never let down after “going down the rabbit hole!” (See what i did there??!!) #learnLAP
A5: #Sketchnotes and TicTacToe writing exercises - Teamwork + Sketching + Connections = a rigorous, collaborative experience that my students hated to love. #learnlap

Very cool! In high school, I struggled with the mob rule theme my teacher promoted. Love that you are giving them a different way to voice their ideas and feelings. #LearnLAP
A5: I like to teach different note-taking strategies using graphic organizers or #sketchnotes and I also encourage using @Buncee for visualizing their learning because of the critical thinking it promotes #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A5 immersing students through local history helps students appreciate where they come from. Also showing students relevant news clips to things we are studying helps drive discussions.
A5: Illustrations! I have students illustrate our weekly poem to reflect how they visualize it. I have also have had students explore Google drawings, and love using the app tellagami to bring characters to life! #learnlap
A5 We participated in #gra17 & connected with other classes via Flipgrid and google hangout to discuss #Fenway&Hattie Sts asked & answered ?? from Sts in different classes #LearnLAP
A5 This year we tried Growth Reflection Websites & used them in our 1st student-led (-created) conferences! They started w/ their career/college/life goals & chose specific Eng-related skills to focus on, improve. Ss then discussed growth with own family & another. #LearnLAP
A5: Many of my Ss struggle with visualizing. We talk about mind movies and trying to picture what's happening. We draw often and use PicKids to help visualize. #LearnLAP
A5: We visualize through sketching and discussion. My Ss like to “sketch to stretch” or “doodle a story”. They quickly sketch illustrations that help them visualize what is happening and go back and retell, then add the text as a final step. Helps them find their way! #learnLAP
A5: I use Flipgrid and I get my Ss to see the importance of working on the math in groups. They are always sharing their learning and helping others. If they have a question, I try to get them to explain their process instead of showing them how. #learnlap
A5: With geometry it was easy, but for math generally, I love error detection activities because they have to look at the problem in a totally new way - not just “can I do it?” But “can I find the problem, fix it, and explain the change?” #LearnLAP

A6: sometimes independently finishing a novel is a daunting task, even for teens. This is why I'm thankful for audiobooks! It changes everything for reluctant readers! #learnlap
A6: I have created a lesson where I had the Ss solve puzzles around the room. The Ss were trying to break out in 25 minutes, and I gave them an incentive if they were the first group to break out. Of course, looking back, I would change some aspects, but it was fun. #learnlap

A6: Conversations play a HUGE role! Students have the time to think through material with their T&T partners. They are able to better internalize what's happening and then share their own ideas. #learnlap
A7: By watching CNN10 Ss were exposed to a variety of current events around the world. It made them curious to learn about new cultures as well as to explore solutions to global problems! #LearnLAP

A7: In some of my HWs, the Ss have to come up with their own questions about the material. I don’t allow them to say “nope, I understand it all, now I can die in peace.” #learnlap
A6: I work in academic support at a high achieving independent school. Its not a lesson, it’s a mindset for my students. We work everyday on embracing the “you are not a grade or number, you are a person with so much more to offer” idea #learnlap
A7: We have to encourage them to be willing to take a leap of faith. They need to know that we are there to support them but they need to know it’s okay to fail, we just try again and again. We must inspire them to think outside the box! #learnLAP
A5- My favorite way is to get my Ss up & moving. When we talk about states of matter, we go to the gym & act out the different phases or when discussing diffusion we go outside & diffuse! Ss understand concepts better if they can refer back to an activity or model. #LearnLAP

Same here. Work at an international school, and the Ss define themselves by their grades (even when the parents don’t put any pressure on them). I constantly have to reason with them on this. I don’t get a grade, or number, as a T. How do I know I’m doing well. #learnLAP

Students have “statements” they can go get and put on their desk so they can move from I can’t on the learning grid, to I’ll try. The premade statements are -stuck on vocabulary word, need a strategy to get started, I can’t read the text ..#Learnlap
A7: I like the idea of using genius hour for this; but anything gives students choice and doesn’t limit this interest. I hate it when I see a kids start a project or a conversation and it is curved because an adult doesn’t think it is going to work. Let them go for it! #LearnLAP

Q7: .“It’s the most curious thing I ever saw in my life.”

How can we open our students' eyes to new experiences and allow them to become “Curiouser and curiouser”?
#LearnLAP#EduGIFs
A6: We talk a lot about growth mindset and even have a weekly growth mindset goal. We discuss famous failures and research failures. This makes them more comfortable to try new things and fail. #learnlap
Q8: “Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.”

What lesson/experience have you created for students that really sparked their imaginations?
#LearnLAP#EduGIFs
A7) I think I personally try to transform my room into locations, allow my Ss to connect via twitter, and research things they want to know more about #geniushour#VR#LearnLAP
A7. We need to share our passion of the subject areas with them, allow Ss voice and choice and leading the way! Alllow for exploration, experimentation, dissection, challenges, creative writings, etc.#learnlap

CREATING COUNTRIES
As part of our classroom game,
students created countries and
characters! They developed their
county's culture & customs. Their
imaginations ran wild!

A7: I have to work on changing my Ss’ mindset. They limit themselves by their overfocus on grades. It is a real struggle. When I have succeeded, the Ss grow in confidence and in outlook. #LearnLAP
A7: Genius times: Shared spreadsheet for submissions/shopping lists. used up my monthly budget. Most importantly I said YES. Or a Try Something Different 2 wk project instead of HW. #LearnLap
A7: Dedicate time at the beginning of the year to help cultivate a safe and supportive classroom environment. Students are more open to new challenges and risks when they feel a part of a strong community! #LearnLAP
A7 expose them to course material & then let free to wonder. @pmg12 discusses curiosity in his book The Wonderwall -great read! This needs to be nurtured at a young age, b/c I can tell you a lot of Ss have had the curiosity beaten out of them by the time they get to HS. #learnlap
A7:
I'm not being flippant, but we just need to give them time. Time to question, to explore, to even become curious. We get on the hamster wheel of coverage, and we forget about just giving Ss to let the learning and ideas sink in. #LearnLAP
A6-My school uses the AR program for reading. I encourage students that don’t like to read to listen to the books while they follow along. I also have given students Reading Calendars to help them stay motivated to read! #LearnLAP#middleschool
A6: I am handing over the objectives & lessons for my govt class of future Ts to them so they have to learn, plan, and teach the lessons to each other. We are going to stay at the top of Bloom’s all semester and get them creating to prep for their own classes. #LearnLAP
A8: I’m double dipping, but we did a google expedition to places like Jamestown, battles like Gettysburg, and even Ford’s Theater. Learning by immersion! #LearnLAP
A8 Creative narrative writing. Also, sketchnoting and group free verse poem writing have both yielded to some amazing creativity. Activities allowed the imagination space to thrive. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A8: I feel like my answer is the same for several questions. But basically pbl's and just listening to their interests like dancing the salsa. They also wanted to bring in authentic Hispanic food which I of course allowed. Primarily allowing what they're interested in
A7 Always allowing for time to question, ponder, and wonder. Exploring topics that Ss are curious about. Having a parking lot or wonder wall for questions that come up and allowing Ss time to research and create more questions based on their findings! Genius hour!!!! #LearnLAP
I'm late! I'm late! For a very important date!
Don't be late to #LearnLAP again! Sign up for free REMIND'ers via text or email here (I forgot to do one today - sorry!): https://t.co/7Ga9QqNfq9
A8: my 8th graders did a blogging project where they created a federalist or republican character and blogged f on that persp crime as they lived during the first 5 presidents. Check it out at https://t.co/piKoJWxZ00#learnlap
A7: Incorporate student choice/voice to increase engagement. Provide driving questions and learning that requires time to complete. Many Ss want immediacy and it’s OK for lessons to take more than a day. #learnlap
A8: We do a muckraking project where Ss have to analyze a societal problem, come up with a solution, and then give the class specific ways to make that solution a reality. One of the best projects we have ever done. #learnlap
A7 Getting involved in the World makes them curious. We have had great experiences with Virtual Field Trips, Collaborations with other classes in North America and Australia and we are currently working in #GridPals with Lakeshore CSD in the States #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP A8: Also I just recalled one of my students during her pbl created QR codes and the kids loved going through the school building finding the links to the answers for her questions! Kids loved getting out of the classroom for a little while.
Thanks so much to everyone who participated in this week's #LearnLAP, especially @KimSnodgrass for moderating such a great chat!
Please join us next week as @Rdene915 moderates. TOPIC: “See me, Know Me, Grow Me”: Relationships and engagement in learning and growing!
A8: Used PGViewer where Ss could build just about anything. I had Ss create something, then write How-To instructions so that another S could replicate the object. This got imagination going, Ss able to share how to do new things in app, & learn technical writing #LearnLAP
Dressing up in characters and face painting really hook the younger grade levels.
My profile pic is me at our field day and I had so many Ss coming up to me throughout the day asking who I was and why I was "dressed up".

What lesson/experience have you created for students that really sparked their imaginations?
#LearnLAP#EduGIFs
My 7th graders created a character and blogged as though they were living during the Middle Ages. They chose a castle, created a coat of arms, went on a Crusade and did a simulation to see if they survived th Black Death. #learnlap
A8) I have a lockdown protocol i call SPAR, and a lesson that i call “Rethink School Safety”. It is based on allowing Ts and Ss become more empowered when it comes to school safety policies and drills. Allowing a Roundtable discussion allows for ideas to be traded! #learnLAP
A8: so in college I took non-Euclidean geometry (I’d call it “weird geometry” if you’re not mathy). Several concepts are super accessible to high school Ss - showing them a triangle with 3 right angles or a circle that looks like a square shows them anything is possible #LearnLAP

A8: working on their metacognition when it comes to study strategies allows them to reflect and create active learning opportunities that allow for collaboration and immediate feedback #staringisnotstudying#learnlap
A7: I bring in people who are professionals in the related fields so they can teach about the applications of the content in real life; elected officials, lobbyists, campaign managers, journalists, etc. I want them to dig into it. #LearnLAP
