The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Summer is an awesome time to reflect. I also read great PD books and middle grade books. My grade was changed 2 weeks b4 school started one year, so I try to not do too many grade specific things. #bfc530
Rest and rejuvenation is so important. I didn’t do enough of that last year and need to this year. I’m getting old! This body needs time to heal! #bfc530
Summer, for me, is all about restorative practices: swimming, reading, camping, biking- no alarms and giving my body a chance to live by its own rhythms. #bfc530
Hey all! Good morning! Coming out of my NyQuil coma - feeling a bit better, but I start to lose it around 6th period as my head just wants to hit the desk and my eyes start to close... lol #summercoldsstink#bfc530
My best summer habit is just being with my kiddos. We explore, relax, go on local adventures. It prepares me for the school year by reconnecting with them and remembering that the most meaningful learning doesn't come out of a book #bfc530
I reflect back on the year. I look at the good&bad, see where the school, & I need to improve. And it is a time for professional reading as well. #bfc530
We've been taking long family vacations - two trips out west, three weeks in Maine, Air B&N hopping last summer ton a trip that took us into the path of the eclipse..spending time with family is a great way to recharge. #bfc530
Reading summer pd books, relaxing in the sun at pool to recharge, and experimenting with different teaching strategies on my daughters during daily DaddySchool. My daughters complain because their friends don't have to learn during the summer (they will thank me later). #bfc530
I take time for myself so that I can rest, relax and get ready for new opportunities. I also read books that inspire me to challenge myself, reflect and prepare for anything & everything that may come my way. #BFC530#LoveLiteracyLearning
I walk away from work completely. I don’t think about work, I don’t go into work, I completely decompress for a couple of weeks. It’s important to take that time. #bfc530
Always started planning lessons and activities for upcoming school year in the summer. However, many years came back in September & was told I was teaching something different. My Beginning of School Pages https://t.co/BhtCOu38Cm#edchat#bfc530
Good Morning #bfc530
Umm, the only think I always do is set up my classroom before we start. Usually last week of August. Even though I'm in HS I still decorate. Also I write some lessons:)
No school thoughts for 1st 2 weeks (although Im not always so good w/it) Focus on my family, after July 4 read, brainstorm, and tinker w/ideas, August start putting things together. Well before end of summer, Im rested & ready to return. I love my job #bfc530
Most summers of my career I’ve sat a ten day retreat. Do a lot of reading for fun and work. Garden like a crazy person. Plan units. @DFinnEd always builds great stuff for me and my kids and installs it 😍. Kayak. Travel. Hike. #bfc530
This summer I’m planning on cleaning out and purging things I haven’t used in the last couple of years. It’s amazing how teaching “stuff” accumulates. #bfc530
Reading first and foremost. I also put school things away for a bit—I find that if I unplug myself from my “teacher brain” for a bit I return more refreshed. It’s hard though—even when hiking I find stuff that I want to share with the kids! #bfc530
I TRY to dedicate July to me and my personal reading. Then August to PD books and middle grade books. It doesn’t always work that way, but that is the utopia I strive for. #bfc530
Over the summer, I sleep, read, hike, enjoy my family, work in the yard, DIY on my house, and get trained on the latest tech to use in the classroom. There's never enough time. I would love year round school. #bfc530
I totally recharge in summer, catching up on friends, reading, exercise, family.... and by mid-august I'm back in planning mode. I attend a local teachmeet to reconnect with colleagues. I hit the sales for notebooks, pencils, etc to stock the classroom cabinet. #bfc530
That's awesome. This will be my first summer not either doing marching band or XC camp as a teacher/coach since 2000 and so excited and sad abt it at the same time #bfc530
I spent 2 weeks last July moving into my new class. Hadn't appreciated before how different it is moving into an empty class vs. one packed with stuff. Very different experience! #bfc530
Too much changes on a daily basis for me to attempt to plan ahead. I do earmark activities for different units that I would like to try, as I regularly change what each year looks like. #bfc530
Good morning #bfc530! I tend to give myself a couple of weeks to unwind with family & lots of fiction reading. Then I start researching, reading prof books, & blogging: I love looking at possiblities for Sept.
Hey #BFC530 ... Carle Place's @RushmoreAve School raised over $19.000 this year alone for the @American_Heart Association! Could you send a vote their way? Scroll down to "Sort Order", then "Most Votes". Confirm in email. THANK YOU!

I take two weeks where I completely unplug. I spend most of my time outside; family time rules the day; read two fiction novels. I spread out my school responsibilities so that I prepare a little at a time. No stress...no pressure. #bfc530
Sorry to hear that. Labs should be sacrosanct. BTW I told your tour guide I heard he took a trip w/the Girl Scouts over the weekend & he asked how I knew. Gave me time to share about #bfc530
Continue to get up early, spend a lot of my time out in my yard with my flowers, def getting to the YMCA more for exercise, lots of time w/family near&far ...bff margarita nights for sure!!!! #bfc530
Make sure you don’t bemoan the part of summer that has already passsd. In the past I would sometimes look at the calendar and realize it was July and get sad that I only had x amount of days left. Treasure the days and recharge for the year! #bfc530

One summer I read three books that helped me rebuild myself as an educator. I changed everything the next year.
A great book can truly transform.

@ChrisQuinn64 Next weekend, I am running a mud run on Sat and a 10k on Sunday. Any tips on the 10k? It will be my 1st one done as a race. My average distance is 3 miles. #bfc530
In previous schools, as Head of Curriculum, I’d bring the whole timetable for the school (100 Ts & 1200 High Ss)home for holidays, often finished to ‘practical completion’&needed rooming&minor clashes resolved. If a T left=major revision.Usually spend Dec & Jan Timetabling

Yes...My wife has often said I should take advantage of that ‘perk’ we have in our benefits. I rarely think of massage...and, yet, I know it can be a wonderful stress reliever! We just need to slow down enough to take advantage, eh? #bfc530
When I'm not horseback riding 🐴 or canoe camping 🛶 or cottaging 🏞 I often use summer to catch up on blogs (I find may /June gets so busy I stop reading them).
This summer I'll do my teacher-librarian AQ part 2 while I coordinate the summer school Math teachers.

I will schedule in my calendar reading time, writing time, and walking time, half hour blocks, helps to make my unscheduled summer days more productive #bfc530
Hey you devoted teachers who get up at 5:30 am to hone your craft. Consider a visit by the “Father of the Constitution,” 4th President James Madison. (Constitution Day is Sept. 17) and 2018 is the 230th anniversary of its ratification.

For sure! Love exploring our city with my family! We hike, go to museums, find new places to eat... I love what my kids know from being out on adventures with us! #bfc530
Excited for this summer. I think my girls are old enough to take a history trip w/Dad. Thinking Boston, Lexington, & Concord. Havent been up there in about 20 years. I can already picture my girls running across Concord Bridge. #bfc530
This summer for the 1st time in about 17 yrs I'm teaching summer school. I'm also going to do a lot of PD reading and take care of myself by hiking. My body and brain need both of those to prep for next year. #BFC530
I have a knot in my back that won’t go away..I want someone to work it out.. insurance doesn’t pay for us, but there are plenty of deals on @groupon. #bfc530

Good #bfc530 PLN! I am Josh from NJ. During the summer, I spend more time with my family than I do during the school year. This allows me to recharge because I know I am giving more of myself the people I love the most. I am also read more books during the summer.
Thanks! Plan on running 5 miles this weekend..I have never done two races in one weekend, so I am excited to see what i can do. #bfc530 It is a 7 AM; thoughts about food before?
Boston! Great city! Take them to the 4 seasons! Best hotel for kids. I took my in middle of winter they had a great time! The hotel set up a tent in the room so kids could Glamp:)

This is worth doing! You have to look after your own well-being, in order to be up to the daily challenge that working with Students in schools. #bfc530
I try to do activities that are difficult to do during the school year. Go bike riding on local trails. Spend more time with family and close friends. #bfc530
For half or full marathon, fuel consumption is a little different. For 10 kms, I eat very little, before a run. I certainly drink water before I run...usually 30-45 min before...and void before the run. A banana can be helpful, but not too close to race time. #bfc530
As a former environmental science teacher, I use 2 travel internationally each summer. Utilized my vacations as opportunities 2 teach science like contrasting biomes between Alaska & Costa Rica or history & purpose of aqueducts in Spain or bioluminescence in Puerto Rico. #bfc530
I loved teaching summer school before, was a much slower pace. Now that my daughter has graduated high school I need to find something to help occupy my time so I don't go stir crazy. Hope this is the right avenue. #bfc530
You make sure you look after yourself Bridget. Maybe spend some time this weekend on doing things you like! I’ve always found that 2 day break over the weekend was important to my well-being. #bfc530
An even better thing is as I taught it Ss saw me in the pics with my wife doing things like #pushups on a glacier in Alaska or walking in a rain forest in Costa Rica or walking alongside the ancient aqueducts in Spain. I made it relevant for them. Talk about engagement! #bfc530
I have The Book Whisper and started it a few years back, I must not have been in a place to really learn from it. I need to pull it off the shelf and give der where it takes me now. #bfc530
I'm still going to do a lot of reading, writing, conferencing, and traveling this summer, but I'm also super excited to spend lots of quality time with my wife @LeannHamstra and our six-month-old son. #MyalsMoments#bfc530
I've been missing #bfc530 since I started the new book—early AM is writing time—but this is a great Q. Last year @jhweinstein and I wrote about how we can reframe "summer mode" as self-care, which we can practice all year long: https://t.co/mhAaZdzAxp
Hey Jen! My oldest daughter spent 5 months in Uganda last year and my in-laws (and wife, when she was 5 years old) spent a few years in Ghana in the 1960’s. #bfc530

Such a perspective changing experience. I definitely learned so much about the universality of human experience and how much we have to learn from one another. #bfc530

Just one?? It would have to be either the visit to a doctor with a mother of seven who had typhoid or visiting our almost built family home and meeting the kids who will live there or seeing our Ss who are so stigmatized because they are deaf signing happily at school. #bfc530

@susankotch Re: student literacy. I share this James Madison quote with you while thanking you for your particular efforts. “Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power that knowledge gives.“ #bfc530
I keep learning. This summer I’m taking online courses to better myself with classroom technologies. I’m going to a district that is 1:1. It keeps me fresh. #bfc530

I practice solving Math Qs in ways that are different than how I learned as a Ss. Usually this involves using Math manipulatives so it’s a ton of fun😁 Doing this helps my own conceptual understanding & also helps me to build a better sense of what I could observe from Ss #bfc530
Thank you, @ChristineBemis2. I have always taught my kids to find something they are passionate about and take action. If we each do our small part the world will be a much better place. #bfc530

Can someone please tell 44 that it's time for him to shut the back door. His time has been up, there's a new sheriff in town. His name is President Donald J. Trump. Stop getting it twisted number 44. You ain't the President no more.

The past 2 summers I've offered to meet Ts at various locations #CoffeeEDU#PatioPD#PubPD No negative connotation of coming to school for meetings. We just hang out and learn. Can't wait to continue it this summer. #BFC530
