Jay, Gimli, MB. HS ELA, hardcore aficionado
Hi! Pam, Special Ed & intervention teacher, Charleston SC. Fav pen = Flair pens!
Hi Everyone! I will be in and out tonight! I started sketch note because of this group! My Ss love it!
Don't feel like you HAVE to draw your answers tonight, I'm sure some will, I haven't. :)
Oh I am Kathy grade 3 from CT Hi Everyone!

Hi, All! I am Ashley from NC. Fave pen = Staedtler sketch pens.

LOVE the Sakura Pigma Microns!
Hey Stacey, Ashley, & Leslie!
Those are some of my favorites!
I'm taking notes (no pun intended) tonight! I seriously love pens!
no way. If I wasn't so hooked on , this would be my go to. Old school cool!
Same here! I think this could become an intervention group.
For ball points, Bics are my faves!
Not much buddy! I only sketched a few answers tonight! Busy week!!! š³ Looks like I'm stuck with 140. https://t.co/cvmHrlm6xR
I think we'd encourage the habits, not fix them. ;)
I am like, "I HAVE FOUND MY PEOPLE!!!!"
When it comes to pens, it's all good...
A1 I when I really have to pay attention, or when the information is something I need to remember.
Hey, how are you all tonight?
I like Sharpies too. I with or . :) No name iPad stick. hehe
A1: My students sketchnote the ribbons in Microsoft Office. Gives them their own visuals.
A1. I currently when I am not learning something totally brand new since I am new to the process.
Hiya a bit late today sorry what'd I miss? Jo from Melb Australia :)
A1: mostly and , but for funsies, nothing serious. Can't find any examples right now.
Tina from TN, lurking to learn tonight
A1 I was taking notes in a district lvl mtg, sitting next to superintendent. He leaned over and said, "You take cool notes."
Hi ! Maifran, hs librarian, playing w my kid, so I'll be a little distracted
Thank you for sharing. I didn't know.
Want to be able to effortlessly & will in time. Need to let go of being "just right" w/ art. Embrace the process.
Chris, rdg spec, from PA who is not making sketchnotes due to a desire for perfection. Now doodling for no purpose--yes.
Welcome!!! Join in on the fun! Some amazing folks in this chat tonight! https://t.co/pxfjqwNxal
Tina from TN, lurking to learn tonight
A1: I anything from conference sessions to faculty meetings. Keeps me focused oddly enough.
A1 I sometimes notes in my journal - my supervisors always comment on how cool they are
this is a great chat for that, though you may be tempted to do more than lurk...
A1: w/my S's Learnzillion notes by drawing pictures to help them remember. I'm trying to encourage them to do the same.
A bit late, but Kim from Sydney here! I love my . Writes beautifully and I love my clear casing! https://t.co/8mZy7yw3zh
Also need to keep the learning first. I sketchnote when planning a PD session or when revisiting notes.
A1: using for review of conference materials, meeting minutes, etc - good review for me
If only I could send hugs via pixel...
Android developer here. I love my Copic Markers. Does that count as pen?
OOOOO that's a gorgeous pen!
looks great...lurking from a beta club event
part of my plans for next semester is an analog design unit, on lettering & sketching to build skills!
I want some of those! Have to save my money! :)
Checking in a little late. What's up everyone?
Hey, ! Ross from NJ. CSA. Sorry I'm late!
A1:I'm going 2 offset the ebb & flowš I don't sketchnote. I see why it works, but I find myself overthinking it & missing info.
1 of the same setbacks I saw with my Ss at first. No perfection? No problem! Sketchnotes r for you! https://t.co/8hzVdM8ASM
Chris, rdg spec, from PA who is not making sketchnotes due to a desire for perfection. Now doodling for no purpose--yes.
I do blame previous Ts who had me copy notes rather than think creatively for the lack of ability to think quickly.
Oh, that's cool! Thinking, thinking....
That's one of the nicest tweets I have seen all day! :)
Heck Yeah! And welcome to the !
thx Jay! Anything w/ has to be fun! Lurking fr a beta club event
Likewise! Also makes the review a lot more engaging!
Now I can do that but never as I am listening to the speaker. Maybe I just can separate the two.
A1 I've been trying to use paper 53. Still prefer my composition books.
Hey Ross! Glad to have ya!
That is exactly my "struggle"...
A2: Yes please I do need any resources you can suggest.
For me, pictures + words stick better in my brain than just words. Also easier to review...
Staci from TX - lurking while watching my son's Ninja Zone class!
I finally got home. Let's chat
A2 a really nice texta, a cool journal and a growth mindset - "I can do this, practice is the key!" Remember notes r 4 u.
I wonder why we struggle with this? Maybe it has to do w/ how we lrn best.
You came up in a search, that's why I tagged you in the invite! Gorgeous stuff!
Watching on Blab and participating in while cooking dinner and prepping for tomorrow's PD. Whew. I'm tired.
Me too! I like to make 'em, buy em, decorate them, whatever!
Agreed. I need to get past my artistic filter. I don't yet have a knack for speaking in pictures. l https://t.co/cwxFAMtQFi
For me, pictures + words stick better in my brain than just words. Also easier to review...
Going through my archives to post a pic of the books I plan to use in my ADU
I find myself trying to make my doodles during phone conversations make sense. More than just squiggly lines now.
Maybe b/c we are wanting our brains to do 2 meaningful things at once?
A2: I want to explore this! Sat w/ during keynote and watched him sketchnote. So much awesome!
A2 start with paper first. Then move to tech
I am SO behind on reading, but that's OKAY. Idea-share is STRONG tonight!
You are at the right place. We should probably have a school supply addiction chat too!! https://t.co/vCTy0yagBf
Me too! I like to make 'em, buy em, decorate them, whatever!
Never heard of Blab. I googled it and what is the best way to get me started?
I like including this in exam Qs too. So few Ss take me up on the offer though.
Oh, yeah. I'm keeping Office Depot in the black.
I LOVE one of your most recent doodles you shared on Voxer!
A2 is my fav I think along with she does great ones too!
She was the other one I was searching for.
A2: Aside from 53 and Glow Doodle, which I've already amply tagged, have you tried ?
okay, so sketch notes is something you lrn or just do naturally?
Just so happens I will be participating in a new Blab starting Feb. 11th. Search for DCTV430.
This is what I struggle with.
A2 I also have Mike Rhodes books. A lot of good ideas for scaffolding the concept to kids.
I doodle a lot now, but I don't know if that translates to actually having my doodles become sketchnotes.
- was a-mazing at last year!
I love using a so I have room for sketchnoting on my calendar.
Gah sorry forgot . This is my first twitter chat and I'm totally overwhelmed.
A3 I found examples on line and then let them have at it! I can't draw..they are way better than I am
Welcome to the struggling group!!!
Thanks! Got the idea from istagram.
I was sitting right next to her in one of the sessions and didn't even know it!
Is there a place that the nature vs. nurture debate won't go? hehe
I doodle all the Time. Need to put my skills to good use
A3: Some of my Ss LOVE it. It gave them an outlet for their creative side.
We are so glad you joined us!!! https://t.co/PZAf1n7S51
Gah sorry forgot . This is my first twitter chat and I'm totally overwhelmed.
O.M.G. I JUST got my a few weeks ago. LOVE.
No worries, it's a fast chat, but everyone here is lovely!
we encourage students to sketch ideas before they start building
Sorry I'm late, but better late than never!
A3 I'd love to see some examples of elem Ss use of sketchnotes or ideas for sketchnotes with my young Ss.
We really are your people, hu?
You ARE! I think you are my long, lost soul sister! LOL!
I teach it to the kids, break it down. Sometimes we focus on text, sometimes connectors or pics.
Oh c'mon! That sketchnote could not have been done quickly by an average joe/jane!
I do make them sketch when I am reading aloud, especially if the author is using good description
A little from column A, a little from column B.
Yes and I cannot be any happier!
A3. I gave my grade 6 the option to do sketchnotes for creating content. Some loved it, they absolutely flourished.
A3: I'm thinking about holding quick how-to-sketch groups before implementing it while group...
I do the challenge. My son suggested I start there. I like not having to think of what to draw.
A3: Does sketchnote fit in with "traditional" note taking? Are there data that support effectiveness in developing skills?
Not yet, but I will now. Planning a pd on this topic.
I hope it is something we can learn!
Hi ti all from Ireland.Kevin a Teaching Principal of multi classes in a small rural school.Sorry for late join but ids 12.30am
apparently not. I am soo upset--sketchnotes are up my alley and I feel so inferior in the skill.
Don't know. Do know some cultures encourage doodling before teaching letter formation.
You sound like you're an admin, Ross with all that data talk. :-P
Data!! That's good! Oh, are you serious? https://t.co/7aqpRv2qIQ
A3: Does sketchnote fit in with "traditional" note taking? Are there data that support effectiveness in developing skills?
NO!! This is a great time for us to practice having a growth mindset!
Absolutely Ross. I will dig it up, but I know I've found it once before.
is trending on Twitter in
Skipping ahead, I was like 4m behind on reading! !
How much time do you generally give them?
no, definitely not in real-time for me - I can't listen and process and draw
Yes, check out 's book...lots of research!!!
LOL! I think as long as Ss are engaged with content and owning it...let'em doodle till the cows come home!
I also share my notes that I take at conferences so that kids can see that I also to use in real life. https://t.co/CuvUjJ8LsJ
mine is a lot of big 3D letters with drawings. And a lot of sarcasm
A3: I haven't show them the best patterns, I'll have to do that before our next Learnzillion reteaching lesson.
. I'll take a look. I want to be sure when I bring this to my Ts, they'll see it as more than a chance to be artsy.
I'm considering putting some value there as a carrot, but if I teach skills, then that might help them use it more...
I feel many can not visualize when listening or rdg. Now, is this how/why sketchnotes originated. https://t.co/mpziDFQUla
I do make them sketch when I am reading aloud, especially if the author is using good description
When do you color your notes? During? After?
OOOOO! I vote Amber for teaching us skills! That's awesome! And love that you share w/ Ss! :)
I agree!!! It's not all pics! Fonts, size, color, boldness all are important to make things standout https://t.co/DpQv1OBoq7
mine is a lot of big 3D letters with drawings. And a lot of sarcasm
Thanks, Stacey! Great profile pic!
me too. I often work from my plan, right in front of them so they can see!
hmmm depends colour can be added as a revision lesson for yourself after
She'll be leading a session on it at in June in Clearwater, FL.
No, I use one color during. Add color after and more details sometimes. I get down the BIG IDEAS. https://t.co/DwguhqnXXc
When do you color your notes? During? After?
Oh, I hope I never have you sitting next to me b/c I am the exact opposite---line after line of words.
Again, sounding like an admin....... :-P
I have been really trying to be sketchy, but I am very digital now.
RU able to create these beautiful sketchnotes during the conference or do you take notes and create this later?
is now trending in USA, ranking 48
Leslie, you're super sketchy.
A4. It depends on the task.. I've been trying to teach my Ss to take quick sketches, write dot points, fill out the rest later
How much thought went into this before you began sketching?
I started with this academic year - need to upgrade to the lrger one next yr
A4: I plead the 5th. We are ramping up our SM professional presence this term. Hard to do it all as a subject T of seniors.
A4 depends...think of it as part of the learning esp. if u do it as a class on a particular lesson that takes no time out
hey, Beth--there are all kinds of ways to use visual notes w/elem students! I can help w/ideas š
A lot of the big pictures I create &then I fill in the blanks when I get home and have time to reflect. https://t.co/bxzpjALQ5d
RU able to create these beautiful sketchnotes during the conference or do you take notes and create this later?
I don't know how they originated. I have been doing sketches in read aloud forever! :)
we try to include some sort of sketching in every project
. I face a lot of Ts who think that the tips/tricks/tools I bring them are nothing more than toys.
That is how I taught it, esp in writing-quick sketch to plan.
Not a lot. I think about what I want to say, and then use arrows to move around when I run out of room.
I add to things while revisiting as well. Often the 2nd/3rd colours tell me I've been back thru!
The only thing that would make it better is a spiral spine. I like to bend it back.
YES!!! This is perfect! I use lots of speech bubbles, thought bubbles, lines, and arrows too!! https://t.co/ochTFW4hK1
Great! I'd love the help.
some good neuroscience supports the use of visuals
Beth, check out Wendi's book! Full of so many resources!!
This is a skill that takes a while but it pays off. This is what I try to teach my students to do https://t.co/7JoF7QQ9oL
A lot of the big pictures I create &then I fill in the blanks when I get home and have time to reflect. https://t.co/bxzpjALQ5d

A4: I'll need to get a better handle on my own process & enlist one of the art teachers in my building (or import !)
I would be trying to decide what color to use when I miss something earth-shatteringly impo. https://t.co/JnEFIEmY57
When do you color your notes? During? After?
I often sketch out handouts or graphic organizers before digital construction.
Put me onto your stuff. I'm going to check it out. Thanks.
Have you read Flora & Ulysses? Holy Bagumba!
listen 4KEY WORDS, sketch from "image library" that I can sketch and deal with words when I can't draw https://t.co/Zeaawfl6B9

It is a GREAT book! I thank for the suggestion. Love the edu slant!
In the middle of my 2nd reading. I love it so much!
ha, "sketchy" - that's what my nana called an old boyfriend
Give them an article that has been outlined and a sketchnote. Which would they rather read?
Thanks, ! I'm going to sift through the storify to snag some resources! For now, are reading, and so must I!
I used it as my primary resource for PD I am delivering on Monday.
Modeling sketchnoting during teaching can teach a lot about the process.
I use one and circle, underline or bubble in different colors.
YES! I'm a librarian, breaking the binding is a no-no
Thanks for stopping by, Ross! I'll be by for after I drop off my rent check tonight!
I teach a block area class & don't get to see the Ss as often as reg Ts. I'm still modeling for them. Lots of thinking aloud.
Hi , Just stopping by before I start teaching here in Phuket, Thailand. Lots of great tweets to read!
when my Ss say they like how the sketches help them remember and keep them engaged, that's pretty awesome evidence
We did some work with sketchnoting as annotating on visuals. Annosketching? Love to play with that notion further.
I'm one of those thinkers that needed to be moving during lecture. This was perfect! Pencil always moving. Focus--doodle.
I don't think she has written a bad book yet. I am loving the break-offs from the Mercy Watson series.
A3: Drawing can be intimidating. Think of it as taking notes in 2D instead of linearly.
saw that resource online--I need to get one too!
are easy for recall information too! Look for your visual image, easier than sorting through pages of sentences.
There're too many good books, and not enough bux! More pay, plz!
Love it! The goal setting part is nice to force yourself to use.
Agreed! Sometimes hard for people to image that notes can start in the middle of the page :) https://t.co/5xjhNGfgvB
A3: Drawing can be intimidating. Think of it as taking notes in 2D instead of linearly.
I wish the spam would get out of the way!
My wife is at her school's STEAM fair. Need to feed the Meddling Kids some tacos before they riot. Thanks folks!
Sad, my teenage daughter is watching me chat and told me she is not allowed to doodle while she is taking notes at school.
I can't answer these Qs bc I asked all of them!!
I'll be back to liberate more of your insights and advice!
Send her in with some solid research!
Haha, I noticed that!! You're awesome !! We love you!! https://t.co/5hp5mwl0mR
I can't answer these Qs bc I asked all of them!!
It has to make some sort of sense for someone else to understand
Hah! I run into that problem most weeks!
And a paid day off each month to catch up w/ rdg them.
A5 try not to focus too much on the fine details in sketching and don't be worried if you 'can't draw'.
Gonna have to talk to those HS Ts!
wow! Excellent! Let me know how it goes!! way to be proactive!
A5 don't get hung up on drawing great images - use shapes, arrows, and lettering to create
Rain predicted Sunday. Good book readin' weather.
"skkkeeeettttchhhh" (<--what some of my Ss used to say back in the day!)
NO ERASER rule when sketching. Mistakes are ok. Don't try for perfection. Can't draw, that's ok too. Its for YOU, nobody else.
I can draw but I pay attention to the details. Personality flaw.
Trying to figure out the "teaching" others piece...PD on Monday & requests from Ts. W/o a class I don't have As.
grrrrr keeps some Ss focused
Does anyone like a particular notebook to Sketchnote in? I LOVE however I find the passes too thin
Don't be afraid to be terrible at it if you're new. All good things start that way.
I am having much more success trying it when the content isn't too much or coming at me too quickly.
so many nice features (quotes, weekly focus) plus the drawing area
I use 11 x 18 paper. I need space to draw
Will do! Was thinking of using to catch the session.
A5: Don't worry. Embrace mistakes. Go for it! Now, if I could just follow my own advice...
I'll on anything- once planned a whole term's art curric on a napkin in cafe
A5: Keep it simple so you don't waste time.
I use a sketchbook and stick two pages together.
A5: Use a pen. If I use a pencil I'll keep erasing and redrawing and never actually take any notes. https://t.co/X8J7usoska
Nah, it just means you care. Set out to do it badly on purpose (best writer's block advice, too).
pleeeeeaaaase send me the email for her teacher(s)!!!
That's how I feel during a fast chat.
Good. 1 of my Ss just purchased a book for me from the Bk Fair. He's in 3rd gr & it's 1 of my best gifts ever.
Model, model, is the best advice I can give. I do lots of thinking aloud. "What would be a good image?" https://t.co/qmNOt1HkNU
Trying to figure out the "teaching" others piece...PD on Monday & requests from Ts. W/o a class I don't have As.
That's so hard for some of my students! They get upset when it "doesn't look right"
I've barely met you, and I love you so much right now. https://t.co/a3v93aw3NL
pleeeeeaaaase send me the email for her teacher(s)!!!
I have to do it in pencil. Some things I HAVE to erase
I use plain old composition notebooks. We also use these for INB in science. I think I'm just used to them.
wonderful! I am impressed!
Definitely like that learning how to sketch is giving me insight on learning process & how to help Ss persevere.
YES! I use sharpie to demonstrate. DRAW/WRITE with purpose. Ever mark is there for a reason https://t.co/47vf4D5iTI
A5: Use a pen. If I use a pencil I'll keep erasing and redrawing and never actually take any notes. https://t.co/X8J7usoska
What?!?!?! Don't they know you are ???? And have all the great ideas?!?!
I have those huge chunky pencils in my room that don't have erasers. :) https://t.co/UxjwnNonf0
That's so hard for some of my students! They get upset when it "doesn't look right"
I used to say "a little sketcheroo" with my mom. It didn't catch on.
Don't ever try to do a pinterest search while trying to chat I'm getting a bit ADHD. ;)
also have pens available for them. They love 2 use them 4 writing & drawing. So much comfort w/ them & see growth.
yay, - that's how I started!
A6 I do on whiteboard esp. when introducing new stuff Ss take photos sometimes!
I use a pen to write & draw, then color w/ markers during the dull moments in the talk.
This is awesome. I'm also teaching genetics right now. I may have to steal...
A6 Taught this to some 5th graders. Need to check in and see how it's going! cc
I want to do a donors choose for note taking supplies for my kids. I make fabric role ups for them.
A6 A few of my kids do independently, the rest often copy as I model.
If I really have to erase something I draw a black box over it
A6: Trying it with teachers first, then taking it to kids...
A6 some found it difficult others absolutely loved it. Ss who thought they were terrible writers produced some of the best ones
my drawings are big. That would be a huge box
As an aside, I'm so glad that is here - I miss being b/c it's past my bedtime
Truth. Haha. https://t.co/SnKfMGg2kW
I use a pen to write & draw, then color w/ markers during the dull moments in the talk.
My problem, too, Marifran!
Yay! It's taking hold! https://t.co/1UDp9LrCmD
some students asked if they could sketchnote the other day for reading!!
I do that too!!! Did you see the last question!! Haha. https://t.co/TJdNZROegs
If I really have to erase something I draw a black box over it
I did the first half of , but started nodding off. :(
I am trying to stay up for it tonight. Missed it the past few wks.
mine 2 drawing lecturer once covered whole wall with paper 4me2 draw on!
A6 It's takes effort for Ss to use them on their own. Many resort back to bulleted lists or graphic org they are familiar with
is that Moby in your picture?
A6: As I do so much practical in Music I confess to not doing as much as I would like, however my Y8 students love it!
I found the ELL students LOVE this because it levels the playing field. Pictures are universal. https://t.co/85iYu6qYVw
A6 some found it difficult others absolutely loved it. Ss who thought they were terrible writers produced some of the best ones
Yes! tradition every year. This one was from last year, I need to update it.
might be useful to try with kids then show teachers "what kids can do"; Ts more apt to try
It is called and it's fairly rad!
A6: I model on the board and won't erase my mistakes. I also share with Ss my notes from meetings and own reading, travel etc.
I LOVE this advice.
https://t.co/wMppmlFrm2
might be useful to try with kids then show teachers "what kids can do"; Ts more apt to try
I NEVER force the Ss to take notes this way. Some love it (most) others are like, NOPE. It's a tool... https://t.co/w0E4Ta3qfr
A6 It's takes effort for Ss to use them on their own. Many resort back to bulleted lists or graphic org they are familiar with
I enjoy the "just start" method of getting things attempted and/or done! hehe
If there's time for a nap after school, I'm good but usually... School vacay in 2 weeks!
Yes. I have it on the mini iPad.
It is really cool! Will be checking that out! The kids would LOVE it. https://t.co/K8f93IxnnG
It is called and it's fairly rad!
Some of my rdrs would benefit from this as well esp w/ comprehension of content areas.
When you hit "glow" a rocket ship goes by. It's a definite perk, but haven't managed a screen capture of it yet.
I started to read the archives for some of the chats that I miss but it is just not the same.
A7 Not very fancy, my phone is often the link between hand made work and digitizing.
The key: Just play, and I think you've got the right spirit for that!
A7: I want to know this one! Something that isn't just for iPads either. I did use Notability, but don't have an iPad anymore.
Mine too. Sketch, snap, repeat! https://t.co/YdEUIqcHIF
A7 Not very fancy, my phone is often the link between hand made work and digitizing.
A7 Lots of apps out there. Paper 53 has been my go to lately.
earned the nickname...might need to apply to sketchnoting :-)
The live version of it is much more engaging!
I am very much the same. I'd love to know what digital tools are out there https://t.co/v6QfYXSf2G
A7 Not very fancy, my phone is often the link between hand made work and digitizing.
new Ukrainian 5th grade boy's notes on Paris landmarks. Smiled the whole time. Finally, his language https://t.co/6a409Te03S
A7 At basic level, share a pic of a sketch and let it be the starting point of a conversation via (insert tech tool here).
A7: Paper by altho Im pushing myself to pick up the Sharpies thx to &
A7: I'm a developer & I sketchonte to get away from the computer, so no plans to go digital
Me too!! Except my pictures aren't always great, hah!
makes you rethink your own teaching!! Where are my dead spaces? ;-)
A7 Might have misunderstood Q7...
I've been sending my notes to staff, so curiosity is there. Maybe T 1st for the motivated, S 1st for others...
This is totally my question. I can't be "that girl at the tech conference with a sketchbook" forever. Haha. I get weird looks.
without question - a definite "you had to be there" sitch
It's okay, as long as we're all sharing!
I find the version easier!
You rock! Thank you for that!
I look at those as awards!
That's one of my favorites! I use Scanbot to digitize multi-page notes into PDFs. https://t.co/VMRFRfV2a1
A7 Lots of apps out there. Paper 53 has been my go to lately.
Hey Ashley! Glad to see you at w/ my friends and
It is the pt esp for lrng w/ the PLN's. Plus, I need the interation & laughter.
anyone have the new apple pencil? Dying to try it!! Heard awesome things about also. Sharpies are so much cheaper..
great point--and yes, so good for all types of learners, diff reactions for diff content, too
A7: on the iPad - I use Notability regularly and Procreate when I'm feeling fancy
You are quite lovely, -ters! Thx to for gorgeous slides! Nxt wk-building classroom culture! https://t.co/ZCygDy9Nxp
