I use to hate those, I felt like they always asked about stuff they barely covered in class

A1- my 1st thought was the CSETs because I have yet to find a time when I had to know every possible thing about anything

Q1:Describe the best Summative Assessment you have ever given to students, why do you think it's so effective?

The learn and purge assessments always suck

A1: The best assessment I have given to students was a combination multiple choice, essay and semester project in Biology

A1: I asked my reading students to write an alternate ending to "The Outsiders". Their creations told me much.

My best assessments in the classroom were when I worked with the Ss to find ways to see what they know based on how they learn

I always got a kick when you let them alter things and let their imagination run wild.

I constantly assess them with questions through class and then they say why I ask them so many q's

SO important in informing instruction

It showed me how much they knew the story and their improvements in grammar and spelling (pre spelling check).

All teachers have an inner comedian inside and if they don't they need to find or create one.

So true, if you can't laugh at what you do, find something that does make you laugh

A0: worst for me was a Brit Lit test in college. Struggled to connect a lot of it.

A1b: If you can't answer a test question you are giving your students then it probably shouldn't be on the test.

A1b. Yes, don't over-rely on them. Be holistic.

They think something is wrong when you communicate with them. I reassure them that it's what we are suppose to do

A1: best summarize for me was a whole system of cumulative tests throughout semester. Built better retention throughout semester.

A2 Standards, SBAC, etc don't really matter, if we cannot inform and impact instruction. I do hate using high tests to measure

A2:Standards are very important, but Nationalized ones make it a bit hard for some. All Ss should be meeting the same goals.

A2: many thoughts! 11th grade Eng T- have my scores back: much work to do-hope students get help from all Ts

A2- like w/any assessment we can't rely on just the SBAC. It has a place but it should only be a small measure of knowledge

Should we be focusing on 9th and 10th since they will eventually be the next batch

A2: I'm not a big fan of tests. Almost everybody passes a driving test and many still drive like idiots.

What about standards make them very important? Like is it the accountability component you refer too?

A2: from what I've seen SBAC seems to be improving, and has good challenge.
Key = balancing the big assessments w other measures.

How might we get better together?

I think as a guide to make sure we keep things in sight, but reality is that all classes and Ss are different

Literacy in all content areas the PTs are written, Ss didn't get it.

Absolutely, I use it as a gauge where they could be. I always want to see growth, but it doesn't always happen.

I'm huge advocate of literacy. Why is it so challenging to imbed these elements in all content?

True, I am willing to bet some Ss, like me, don't experience growth linearly, but rather exponentially...

A3: PBL if done correctly can help students enhance their Critical Thinking which can impact their learning and application of it

Test assumes linearity among learners, not always the case.

A3: gut reaction is PBL assessment is significantly more complex.
Second reaction = feels like diverse measures which is good.

A3: My students make amazing projects in our and teach me but fail some traditional classes at the same time.

Sounds easy, but it is more complex as you stated

A3: PBL is super valuable IF it is well designed & can help to balance/reinforce and inform you understanding of Ss mastery.

How might we sell it to get others involved? Could we start w/small cohort?

A3: Students learn differently because humans learn differently. Sometimes we forget that they are people.

I'm teaching 2 classes 1 MS, 1 HS, next year..interested in expanding your PLN to do some literacy?

A3b: SBAC, no se, pero accountability is here through testing, and hopefully other measures is staying

A3b: I have been in Ed for 11 years and it's like Herodotus said it's all cyclical

How might we define the cyclic nature to be better for Ss and learning?

A ton of planning and cooperation goes into PBL - for all involved

Create autonomy during collaboration and site-level PLCs. Top-down agendas and walk-throughs do not help

I think there are factors that just keep things changing that dont consider the education of Ss
