#Resiliencechat Tidbit: The 3 most impt protective factors that mitigate/buffer risks: 1. caring relationships; 2.high expectations; 3. Ops to participate/contribute
We can't even begin to imagine how our beliefs in our students can help to "make" or "break" them. Let's begin believing in ALL our students! #resiliencechat
A1 Kid O had a few really wonderful teachers who recognized her intelligence. The rest, not so much. Or more to the point, they didn't do as much as they should have to engage her. #resiliencechat
A1 In Kid O's case, just because she cannot speak in the tradition sense doesn't mean she can't communicate thoughts, ideas and preferences. #resiliencechat

I wouldn't put it that way, Rob. For the most part I think they felt overwhelmed. But then they wouldn't engage my husband and me in how best to open Kid O up. She's about to turn 22. Too little too late. #resiliencechat
"High Expectations" isn't about getting the "A" or a "trophy." It's about sticking with something; putting forth a good effort; process--not product. #resiliencechat
More to the point, @ResiliencyGuy the first school psychologist labeled her in the severe to profound category and essentially indicated that mentally she wasn't going anywhere. #resiliencechat
A2: my "high expectations" are that if they want me to 100% in and respectful of their ideas, then it needs to be 100% reciprocal. We will learn, be mindful and innovative. #resiliencechat
A2: Whatever the high expectations, be sure that we hold all students to strive to achieve them, regardless of color, gender, or socioeconomic status. #ResilienceChat
A2: I think it depends on the student. Could be a high expectation to have a 'quiet voice' for one and 'write an expository essay' for another. For ALL students I think we need to convey respect, mind engagement, and safety. #resiliencechat
And @ResiliencyGuy we had a video taken with her first yoga instructor showing she could follow instructions, and they denied what was right in front of them. She was a dummy. End of story. #resiliencechat
A2 #resiliencechat I believe that we must seek to help each child set high expectations for themselves, as well as providing information, and guidance, as to what we mean. If we tell them succeed, yet, don’t explain what that means to us, or understand them, we risk failure.
A2: my highest expectation is that my students come to school to be safe, welcomed, loved and ready to learn. If they are not ready, then it’s our job to help@get them there. #resiliencechat
A2: Some great answers here so far. I'd add that high expectations as far as those "little" things like looking in the eyes when talking, firm handshakes and holding the door open for others... they may not ever learn these things anywhere (or from anyone) else! #resiliencechat
Very important to individualize, to the degree needed for each child. If we only have one goal in mind, then we run the risk of many not succeeding. If we differentiate, we seek to support each person’s success. #Resiliencechat

A3: model the behaviour you want them to learn. Share open thinking. Set the bar to achievable but workable standards. Watch them bloom! Body language, posture, tone, and attitude. #resiliencechat
A3: By walking the talk. Show respect & expect it. Ask for their thoughts and give them ours. Allow them to share their feelings and embrace them. #resiliencechat
A3: By leading by example and letting students learn by natural consequences once in a while. I think that by setting the bar high for yourself and modeling how to set goals and reach them as a human goes a long way. #resiliencechat
Absolutely! Some might call it the “Pobresito Pedagogy” “Oh, you poor little child, of course you can’t be successful” This type of approach only builds learned helplessness. Children need real goals, real plans, real skills to accomplish those goals. #Resiliencechat
Regan, jumping in a little late! K-6 Math & Reading Teacher. A2 High expectations that Ss are in charge of their path and their learning. #resiliencechat#IHMarchMadness
Yes. And so is service learning--as long as it is sincere/authentic/from the heart and not just a tool for Ss to check a box that they did it. #resiliencechat
A4: Most Kids like to talk so opening that forum in multiple avenues - whole group, small group, one to one so that everyone can feel comfortable #resiliencechat
I’ve seen this many times, when labels are so big, they block that potential to succeed in the eyes of teachers. But many see beyond and can support reaching huge potentials. #resiliencechat
A4: Contribution is vital for Ss. We have Ss (who are troubled) read to younger Ss. Makes them have a purpose/commitment to help someone out. #resiliencechat
A4: Give lots of opportunities, and lots of different TYPES of opportunities to contribute and participate. Our job as teachers is to find that hook, or that tipping point for those reserved or withdrawn students. #resiliencechat
A3 high expectations mean nothing without the relationships. Listen, ask questions, collaborate with each other and of course T needs to model. #resiliencechat#IHMarchMadness
A4: Encouragement, interest, questioning, positivity and more encouragement for positive outcomes...if students feel confident and passionate they will participate and contribute no matter what level they are at. #resiliencechat
A1) sorry I’m late guys, watching @KUHoops secure #14! Take in their activities outside of school, give them nicknames, joke with them, let them see you make mistakes. Treat them as humans, not just kids. #resiliencechat#IHMarchMadness
A4: Act like you actually care. Forget acting and genuinely care. Students and parents, like all of us, want to feel validated. It’s all about relationship-building. #resiliencechat
A5: That honesty, kindness, caring for others, and respect matter. That we look out for those in need for we could be them one day. And that it's okay to ask for help. #resiliencechat
A2) I try and push the high expectations in the way they treat other people. Saying thank you, holding doors open, sitting with someone new, etc. I want them to be leaders in our building even though they aren’t the oldest ones. #resiliencechat#IHMarchMadness
So important to truly know each child. The more we, as a collective or educators, have the time, resources, skills, and focus on knowing our children, we absolutely increase the possibility ot changing the potential negative trajectory that could occur, unnoticed. #resiliencechat
A4 Build more of a community within in a school. Make students feel important and build bonds with variety of people including other Ts and Ss. Some Ss are not able to find their niche because they are in their four walls #Resiliencechat#IHMarchMadness
A5: avoid saying “High School is the best time of your life” not true for many, rephrase “ I hope High School is a positive time you will look back to fondly #Resiliencechat
A5: change starts with you.
Find your passion.
Do what you love.
Never be afraid to try.
Stand up for what you believe in.
Be kind.
💖💖💖 #resiliencechat
A3) high expectations mean nothing without the relationships. Listen, ask questions, collaborate with each other and of course T needs to model. #resiliencechat#IHMarchMadness
A5 When I was in Sunday school, the best class I had was about ethics. When you are honest, not in the disingenuous way people have of really being harsh and critical. #resiliencechat
I believe that to be true. It takes an adult who is willing to see outside his or her own perspective and have relationships and responsibilities that goes beyond teacher salary. It's about empathy and communication and being real. No one should feel so alone. #resiliencechat
Let's make sure there are no "ghost students"--you know...the one's that fall below the radar b/c they are NOT acting out and getting attention that way but rather following along #resiliencechat
A4) started genius hour for them. They are contributing to our classroom learning as a whole. They beg for more time to learn and to teach each other! #resiliencechat#IHMarchMadness
A5: That every person matters. That we value each and every one of them in our community. That they have the opportunity to make a positive impact locally and globally. #resiliencechat
A5 Honesty is huge, all are deserving of respect, perseverance is a characteristic that will get Ss far, process is more important than answer, integrity #Resiliencechat#IHMarchMadness
A5: I think believing in oneself is a standard that should be set. It goes back to modeling..."OK this week I am going to __________. In order to do that I need to ___________, ____________, and ______________." Not everyone gets that at home. #resiliencechat
Not to self promote but...Here's my bk for educators and parents on how resilience begins with beliefs. It contains info./activities/lists re: protective factors to support the resilience of our children and youth AND our own resilience! https://t.co/GtQfvIXZMY#resiliencechat
I really believe that putting this book in the hands of teachers and parents might stop Ss from putting guns in their hands! Just saying'... #resiliencechathttps://t.co/GtQfvIXZMY
A6 #resiliencechat Keep focusing on the importance of helping others to believe in our children, to see the possibilities, to work like made to ensure that we are providing equitable opportunities, safe places, and supports so that they all can grow in peace.
I am always so grateful and impressed with the participation and great thoughts expressed on #resiliencechat Thank you, all!!! (And a BIG thank you to all the newbies! Pls come back!)
Let's make sure there are no "ghost students"--you know...the one's that fall below the radar b/c they are NOT acting out and getting attention that way but rather following along #resiliencechat
A6: I'm going to keep on setting the bar high and showing my students exactly what kind of behavior is expected to help them reach their goals. They can do it! #resiliencechat
