#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Welcome to Diversity & YOU! Tonight's questions will all contain IF statements. As we gather, consider what diversity "ISN'T" and share that with us along with a quick intro! #FLEdChat#theYinYou

A1) I'v said this before on here for sure but I feel that I was lucky to have been introduced to diversity at a young age growing up through the very diverse @browardschools and then having the chance to teach there as well! #FLEdChat

Hello Diversity actually happened to me ... Grew up in a town with 3 brown people two were my Mom and Brother ... Oct 12, 1989 I landed at MCRD Parris Island ... hello diversity. Marine Corps style #fledchat
I love that you've experienced the diversity of the military. I am thankful for the experience I had there too as an Airman. If I didn't know diversity then, I certainly learned it. #FLEdChat
I don't think we can ever over-celebrate diversity..and I also believe that it is so powerful, that introducing it to everyone we meet can be transformative. #FLEdChat
Doug Konopelko - #FLEdChat co-mod from Martin County, FL - Educator, graphic designer, newly minted blogger, all around slacker - https://t.co/Ptd82BXsUS
Yessssssss, Extra credit for the accent! I have to say I love hearing "accents" and some I could likely listen to all day. For example, my maps app is all British... "Proceed to the route!" haha #FLEdChat
A3 - It would look like just another day for our educators! Always ready to help our students. Meeting students where they are and guiding them on their journey! #FLEdChat
For me I don’t know what diversity looks like but I do know what diversity would like to see. Students getting along feeling safe to exchange ideas #FLedChat
That experience was life altering on so many levels ... my first real conversations with people of color came in boot camp ... 1st Muslim ... 1st gay people (during the Don't Ask Don't Tell Era) ... eyes were opened #fledchat
A3: I believe it looks like students who understand the value of others and are willing and genuinely interested in what others have to say/offer and add value to them. #FLEdChat
I find it amazing today that there are still some who have not ever seen anything outside of the city limits. I tend to think that everyone should travel somewhere, see something, etc. We will be better for it! #FLEdChat
The problem with talking about diversity is that too often people think they know ... understanding diversity is an ongoing event ... every person you meet adds another piece to the diversity puzzle. #fledchat
A4: So I wrote a song called "What If" and taught it to my students. The nature of the inspirational song plus it being my diverse students...screams diversity. #FLEdChat
Music should bring our emotions to the surface. It also can stir us to action (dancing). However, when our instruments don't blend, all we get is noise. It all depends on how you use the instrument. #FLedChat
And.. “The value aspect of diversity comes when we understand that a person is more than just the color of his or her skin, but also the bank of his or her background, experiences endured, obstacles overcome and challenges conquered.” #FLEdChat
Isn't it interesting that they say music is a unifier, its a thing that we fall back on,..something that every culture of people can understand and embrace..#FLEdChat
A5: I think it would be a buffet. A fusion of flavors. An opportunity to enjoy our favorite dishes, but also branch out and try dishes we may otherwise never encounter. #FLedChat
A5) it would be school lunch as you never knew what type of combination you would be served (spoken from a true school lunch aficionado, check my bio)! #FLEdChat
We have to be careful that we value what everyone brings to the table, while at the same time honoring our differences. Colorblindness doesn't let us honor anything. #FLedChat
A6: I am going to steal this one right quick, the first thing that comes to mind is the March on Washington...all kinds of people supported the event.... #FLEdChat
We value it more through our actions ... understanding people's differences is way different than embracing them as equal players ... actually listening and doing something about it. #fledchat
So in my class, I like to include all students in our socratic discussions and intentionally draw out #powerthoughts and synthesize them together for students....so they see that I am affirming them and they understand that all are valuable, goof idea? #FLEdChat
I dig this. Everything about it. In One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia, I remembered that Fern, Delphine and Vonetta would learn so much from watching people on TV. #FLEdChat
A8: I tend to believe that challenges (good and bad), obstacles (good and bad) to include other variables are what might constitute diversity..or is at least part of it.. #FLEdChat
It has been a pleasure hosting the Diversity and Community conversations for 14 months. I am grateful for all of you who have come and continue to make these chats meaningful and reflective. Have a great night! #FLEdChat#theYinYou
