Q1 Share your favorite 1st day/week experience as a student. Why did it stick with you more than others?

A1 sadly I have to admit, that I dont know of a 1st day that stuck out in a good way. Perhaps that why I hope for more for our Ss

A1- I always loved icebreakers and team building activities! We did the marshmallow challenge in college & i still ❤️ that!
That is the kind of stuff I tend to dislike, not saying its bad, but I am not very social.
same here! The only thing that was remotely OK was an about me worksheet 😕
A1 I don’t remember any day/week 1 activities, but I try to plan things my kids will enjoy!
Lets hope a few great ideas come out in some later questions. I know they are out there!

A1: Never really loved the first days of school, they were always a bit scary and overwhelming

There is always SO much paperwork on the first day! Yuck!
ONce I get started I am fine, and love the idea of it, Im trying to grow myself in many ways

A1 I always loved first days in choir because we started singing right off the bat. It started the year off with a team mindset

yah but you still have to pass it out sometimes! I used to have so much when I taught 8th grade!
A1- First days in elementary are always full of craziness and excitement! Not much down time.
100% agree! With things like skyward, paperwork seems to be becoming a little obsolete.
A2- love the trailer hook! Text it to kids in remind... Want to know what happens.. See tomorrow in class!
I know its real, but I believe the 1st day is too valuable to waste on paperwork. Must lay learning foundation
A1- For any users I found an awesome 1st day activity modeled after Pokemon Go called Seesaw Go! Great for the first day!

Nope, not usually. Never really had a way to. Meet the teacher was always after school started.
she is a mess and the kids love her! Not good in the class all the time, but doesn't mind a visit!
would there be a version of something like that for HS? Or is too young?
A2- Tonight we had Mt. the T and I had letters that authors had written back to us! They loved it! Authors like J.K. Rowling!!
Our T's do have a way, so that is good, we dont have that problem. Now just to get them interested in the ideas
Q3 Tell us about your 1st day plans. What do you have in store to make it one to remember for Students?
A2: answer=T, Ss go 2 them and get a clue for a math assignment due on Friday. Each day=new clue
It could be adapted but is QR based, we would have to work around that perhaps with cell phones
A3 Not in classroom but I liked to have S's write thank you letters to past teachers. Let me know what they liked and didnt
A3: we always do rules, but they are simple and quick then we take a personality test... Sounds lame, but they but in b/c
A3: I am going to let my Ss finishing inventorying 500 laptops and collect forms and money! Sounds fun, right?
A3: pt2 I make sure they know we don’t do it as a filler, but so I can get to know all 100+ of them faster!
I've given a personality test before too! Kids like that a lot and comparing results
A3 I did a dance montage, High heels, hats, all kinds of random mess. Srs were rolling. No room 4 being uncomfortable in my room
A3-We will start our word spirals. Kids create spirals out of words that describe them
No problem. I want to hear more about new job though when you have time
A3- I used to write a letter 2 each S & then they wrote back 2 me. Told ab themselves & told me things they thought I should know

To me the 1st day should be about making connections. I just heard speak & his words are stuck in my mind!

A3- I also have write something they want the teacher to know. Very informative. No one sees their answers. Some are so sad.

A3 I also used to do rotations and 1 would be a small group with me, then I could get a little 1:1 time the very first day
Q4 What do you think Students will say / what do you want them to say about 1st day/week impressions. Does your plan line up?
YES YES YES YES. His CHANGE message is much more positive than my get out of the profession one.
A4-I want them to be excited about learning new ways of writing! Look at it as a new adventure and not torture!
YES! kind of want to say same thing to Ts about tech. Ok, you don't like it? you aren't good at it? LEARN! CHANGE!
A4 I wanted S's to be comfortable when they mess up. Its inevitable in math, but they MUST try. I tried to embarrass myself 1st
A4:“Mrs. Butler cares more about me than a lesson plan... We read some cool stuff too.” - hopefully my students 😳😂
I cant relate, I was born being good at tech, maybe a bit tacky?
another thing I like 4 1st wk! Ss write down their theme song/anthem- play a diff song each day as s come in! Hey that's my song!
A4 I wanted them to enjoy it. I always felt like if they liked me or felt comfortable, there was a lot of time to do the learning

Choir was ALWAYS my favorite :)

A5-Passion project! Ss learn the research process by researching things that THEY are interested in!
A5 Our first lab! Thumb War lab! Who doesn't love to play thumb war and learn about variables?
A5: this year I'm pumped about having a geek squad. We are going to make a video introducing ourselves & services to Ts

Ss find what they are passionate about and create a presentation. They get to choose the platform!
A5 I am so excited for our new “Absolutely True Diary...” Unit. I hope the kids connect w/ Junior

That is a great idea! Ts are excited to have a student tech team, but never thought about how to intro them.
He can lurk. While not too many are chatting, I do get feedback that we have lurkers. That is great too

Measure wrist circumference, thumb length, and thumb circumference. Try to keep it controlled, we didn't mix sexes.

A5 I love introducing movement activities to teach/practice technique. It gets the kids out of their seats and moving

Sometimes during sight reading to practice for UIL, but I like standing and movement as much as possible.

They sit down so much during the day that I make sure they get their blood flowing for at least 47 mins of school

I do my best! And feel a little weird that you used the word giddy...just saying. lol.
That is good! They do too much sitting in other classes I am sure.
A6-Continually find ways to challenge them. Always shake it up!!
A6: stay ENGAGING! Don't get in a rut and keep on with the same stuff.
I know, sorry... You'll see the further removed you get from classes. S's amaze me w/what they can do
A6 change it up! Find yourself doing a lot of ppts or monotonous tasks, find something else to do. Incorporate games.
A6: maintaining the relationship. Connections through real, valid literature. Interactive lessons. Just talking & showing them ❤️
A6 We must continue to share and build each other up through the year. That is why these are so important. 2 easy to get down
