Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.
If a school wants to accomplish its goals, it has to know where it stands. It has to look at itself in the light of the scoreboard - how has instruction changed to empower learners and how as this improved results? #edcochat#leadlap
So excited to be hosting #leadlap this morning. Please introduce yourself. Share your name, role in life, and location. Be sure to use #leadlap and in your tweets.
Jeff here, also from Washington! 15 year building admin. 3 hs asst principal, 12 jh principal, now Exec. Director of Teaching-Learning-Innovation! #LeadLAP
We'll be using the standard Q1/A1 format in today’s #leadlap chat. Get ready for an hour of engaged learning and great conversation w/ today’s #leadlap PLN #10principles
Evaluate how consistently & effectively you consult your scoreboard. If you are not doing it as well as you should, then create a system that helps you to do it or empowers the leaders on your team to share the responsibility. #leadlap#edcochat
Morning, everyone! Sara from snowy Cincinnati. This is my first #leadlap chat! Currently school counselor, moving to AP role in July. Excited to learn with you all today!
#UhOh.. I should be doing drone #preflight (later i guess), but hey! it's time for #LeadLAP. urbie, learning experience designer [clinician PD] from out in Arizona somewhere. g'day.
Don’t be so focused on the moment that you forget to check the scoreboard. We need to keep an eye on what’s happening regarding instruction and results. #edcochat#leadlap
A1: We open #10principles w/ this quote we have seen often: "When you base your life on principles, most of your decisions are already made before you encounter them." #LeadLAP
A1: we can’t just wing it. Must have some solid bricks@and foundation of which to build. Make them malleable as we need to reflect and change and grow! #LeadLAP
Howdy #leadlap family from Barbara, school counselor and author of What's Under Your Cape? in Friendswood, TX, eager to learn and grow with you for a bit this drizzly rainy morning.
So true, Jeff. Whether leading at school, district, or classroom level, "winging it" only takes us so far. We must be intentional about how we lead #LeadLap
A1: Core beliefs helps us to focus on a vision. In times of adversity, they help us draw our line in the sand. They strengthen who we are on a personal and professional level. #LeadLap
Pleasure was all mine, Shelley. I was hesitant to read this one because "I'm not a leader". Thanks for the message that we are all leaders, either in our classrooms or beyond. #leadlap

A1: You set the tone and lead the way. They are looking for you to step up, share your thoughts, offer guidance AND be unwavering in your dedication to doing what is best for Ss #leadlap
A1: A leader’s decisions should be grounded in their values...if others know your values they can make a decision abt whether or not they want to join your journey #leadlap
A1-Principles help paint a picture that inspires everyone with vision & purpose; principles provide a barometer for making some of the difficult decisions #LeadLAP
A1: Only by understanding what you value most can you be the leader you want to become. Only by knowing what your people value can you touch their hearts and become the leader they want & maximize your potential as a person and as a leader. #leadlap#10principles

A1: Values and principles help you be consistent. They let others know where you fall on topics and what your over all goal is. When you have solid values and principles and make decisions with kids in mind first it adds to a positive school culture. #LeadLAP
Hello!! So excited to join you this morning. Love the #LeadLAP family!!
Allyson, elementary principal in Zeeland, MI and author of The #Path2Serendipity, which will be released by @dbc_inc on Thursday, May 3!
A1- Core values allow leaders to have something to always go back to when they need to make a decision. Does this solution/decision fit with my values? #LeadLAP
My first superintendent taught me - if you do what is right for kids, you will always land on your feet. Have those core values written down and review them everyday. @supt100#leadlap#10principles
A1: Not only must a leader have core values to provide a strong foundation, but they need to be agreed upon by the school family so that everyone knows, embraces and joins in on the school's vision, mission, standards and expectations. One band, one sound. #leadlap
A1: Everyday we need to answer the question, “Who do I want to be for this student or teacher today?” Our core values help us answer this and stay true to this if the situation grows tense. #LeadLAP
A1 without visible core values, direction isn't clear, staff is confussed and frustrated. Transparency is key in a positive culture #leadlap#10principles
A1 These are important because leaders are called to set a vision for the organization that they are a part of- There will be times of uncertainty, distraction, & disturbance. Values & principles establish steadfast drive during these times to help leaders focus on goals #leadlap
A1b: We have to have a compass to gauge the day to day by. Know when to adjust the sails. Know when to turn around. Principles, values, vision are that compass. #leadlap
A1-Core Values and Principles will guide the many decisions leaders have to make and help the leader stay on track. Without them, leaders decisions could be all over the place. #LeadLAP
A1. Your core values are the framework for which you do everything. As a leader you need to make sure you understand your values and stand tall when it gets tough. #LeadLap
A1: Everyday we need to answer the question, “Who do I want to be for this student or teacher today?” Our core values help us answer this and stay true to this if the situation grows tense. #LeadLAP
This is a key point, Michael. It is imperative that leaders build a team of persons who have similar values and commitments to organizational growth #leadlap
#LeadLAP A1 In my first days serving with the US Navy and again working with Intel I learned values, mission statements are the soul of an organization. Its leaders should model so team knows where/how they're going.
A1- Leaders should always be looking to improve themselves and their schools/District sbut staying grounded in your core values, your why should always be the driving force #leadlap
A1: We need to be the change we seek in the world. As I became more reflective and transparent with my values, I hold myself to a higher standard for EVERY interaction, EVERY thought I have, and for modeling what I expect of those around me. #leadlap#Path2Serendipity
A1. Your values don't change whether you're at school or at home. Your colleagues notice the values you lead by because they direct your decisions and how you speak! Good Morning! Andrea Patrick from freezing cold San Antonio! #LeadLAP
A1: School leaders need a set of core values to provide consistency in their work. Making difficult decisions is less difficult when one has a strong set of core values. #LeadLAP
A1: My core values are what guides me in every decision I make, and teachers know that. No matter what happens on a daily basis in a school, there are always those underlying beliefs. These are constant reminders to me of what is essential a successful school. #leadlap
A2:
1. Schools are first and foremost for the students.
2. Teachers need to be valued, supported and appreciated
3. Parents are an integral part of a child's education.
#LeadLAP
A2- Kids before curriculum, people before program, always grow and learn even when it means reflecting on my mistakes which is often times painful #leadlap
A2:
1) Always do what you say you are going to do.
2) Solicit feedback and use it to make meaningful change.
3) Never expect others to do what you won't do or haven't done.
#LEADlap
A2: 3 nonnegotiables.... Everyone has a role and responsibility, be the person you would want to work for and always stay focused on the "WHY". #leadLAP
A2:
1. Schools are first and foremost for the students.
2. Teachers need to be valued, supported and appreciated
3. Parents are an integral part of a child's education.
#LeadLAP
A2: I feel putting Ss first should be the top non-negotiable. The other two would be fostering autonomy for Ts while preserving the mission/vision of the district and community involvement. #LeadLAP
A2: 1- What’s best for Ss? 2- How do we create opportunities and eliminate inequities for ALL? 3- How do we support and encourage our Ss, staff and community? #leadlap
A2: 3 non-negotiable leadership principles:
1) Get in the trenches and put in the work alongside those you lead (don't tell others to go where you are not willing to).
2) Give everyone an opportunity to use their voice.
3) Listen WAY more than you speak. #leadlap
A2: I feel putting Ss first should be the top non-negotiable. The other two would be fostering autonomy for Ts while preserving the mission/vision of the district and community involvement. #LeadLAP
A2
1. Do what is best for #EveryChild every day every minute every second
2. Do what is best for schools, families & community
3. Build relationships
#leadlap
Q2: Allowing people room to give them autonomy and ownership over a project. It's not about doing everything yourself but not about delegating everything either. It's about leading as an interdependent collaborator. #leadlap
A2:
Assume good intentions
Lead through strengths
Listen to understand and ask LOTS of questions
Smile ALL the time
Wake up thankful, looking forward to the day
#leadlap
A2: 3 non-negotiable leadership principles:
1) Get in the trenches and put in the work alongside those you lead (don't tell others to go where you are not willing to).
2) Give everyone an opportunity to use their voice.
3) Listen WAY more than you speak. #leadlap
A2: Students first, always, in every decision; we work with people--never forget that we all are HUMAN--we need to build relationships and connections to all stakeholders; be positive--offer support, guidance, and encouragement...#LeadLAP#10principles
A3.
#empathy ~ we must stop where our feet are and step into their stories.
#compassion ~ we must embrace struggle and choose to help.
#kindness ~ we must give empathy and compassion wings by creating a culture of caring.
So many more but they will follow these! #leadlap
A2: 1) Respect for each other as professionals and for our students, 2) Set high expectations and teach students how to reach them, 3) Meet the individual needs of students - academically, socially, etc. #leadlap
A2: Love what you do , presume positive intent, be vulnerable so others will feel safe to do so too. The last of which can be very scary but is the space where magic happens.
A2 1. Consistent commitment to constantly build up team members 2. Unwavering focus on the collaborative vision that the team has set & 3. Routine, purposeful reflection that connects to strategic innovation #LEADlap
A2: Although I'm not a religious jew, I'll paraphrase Pirkei Avot 1: On three things the world stands. On Torah (education), On service (of God - or any other thing you believe in), And on acts of human kindness. #leadlap
If you treat every person with respect and seek out the greatness of everyone, that pretty much covers everything! #Leadlap Goes to the foundation of building relationships.
A3: Oh baby I love this question! We follow the lead of our teachers. Each school has different needs, based on their own kids and staff members. Then 'the district' comes along side to support learning to address the school's priority! No. Top. Down. PD. #LeadLAP
A3- We establish priorities by being transparent in the why our guiding principles are important, educating our staff, allowing for mistakes, encouraging risks as long as they align with our why #leadlap
A4: Our district has a strategic planning committee analyzing priorities right now...Board, admin, staff, community have voice. Ss are our priority. #leadlap
A2: 1) TRUST: You can trust that everything I do is with my best intentions guided by my core values. 2) Open Communication: Let's talk. 3) We are a team, each with gifts to bring to make a wholly functioning body. I need you to share your gifts. #LeadLAP
Q3: This year, our school performed data digs and built goals around that with input from staff and parents. It was a start. Hoping they continue in tighter ways and add student voice as a collective. #LeadLAP
A3: Listen to all shareholders, especially our kids. They know what they need most of the time. Sometimes it isn’t what we want to hear, but it is so vital that we listen to them and include them on decisions. #leadlap
A3: Generally, we make these decisions through consensus based on core values. As a school we have a "learner centered" vision (slightly different from "student centered") so we use that. Small passionate working groups design solutions to collective problems. #leadlap
A2: Here are mine.
1. Students First, always.
2. High moral commitment relative to the learning of all students regardless of background
3. Strong instructional practice;
4. Desire to work collaboratively;
5. Commitment to continuous learning. #leadlap#10principles
A3: At our school, there is no decision making on this. Children get the priority. If it doesn't impact them positively, we have the wrong focus. #leadlap
A3: It's important to consider the whole child. Body, mind, spirit. Priorities are determined by academic, social, AND emotional needs of our students. We poll the audience! Hearing from all stakeholders & Ss themselves. #leadlap
A3: It all comes back to Ss. No joke. We often ask ourselves, "Is this being done b/c it's easiest for Ts?" If the answer is yes, we look make adjustments to re-center our focus. #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A2
Write it down to remind self/others what we're there for.
Be humble. A leader facilitates others growing into their potential.
Model behaviors you want your team to exhibit.
A3: At my school we meet, share and discuss what we have to do, what we need to do and what we want to do. We are working on this process because time is always scarce and conversely external demands never seem to be lacking in quantity. #LeadLAP
A3: Based on the voices of students, teachers and leveraging skill, research & resources. Asking, what will net the biggest surge forward in success of the whole child. #leadlap
A3: With our @disney mentality we alsways talk about how we are getting to that experience for all: ss, parents, staff. Intentional about those moments. #LeadLAP
Let’s try this again with the right answer 😊 A3: Our district has a strategic planning committee analyzing priorities right now...Board, admin, staff, community have voice. Ss are our priority. #leadlap
#10principles#LeadLAP Priorities should come from the deep dive into the achievement data while surveying the"wants" of the students and teachers. Both priorities can co-exist.
A3: We make our core values visible to start; what's the writing on the wall and in the hall? That's our priority.
When we put kids first, people will know they're our priority.
How we act and talk about our school family when we're out and about also tells our story. #leadlap
A3: Prioritize based on if it is best for kids first. Then look at feedback from all stakeholders and if it matches our mission, vision and values. #leadlap
A3- We establish priorities by being transparent in the why our guiding principles are important, educating our staff, allowing for mistakes, encouraging risks as long as they align with our why #leadlap
a3 I'm blessed to work in a district that is very aware of the changing needs of our Ss. Ts are encouraged to learn & grow. We look at research, data, & listen to stakeholders (Ps, business leaders, colleges...) These guide the policies. #Leadlap
A3: Ensuring that everyone agrees (Ss, Ps, Ts, admin) on the vision of the school, then asking "does this reflect our vision?" If it does, then it's up to us to find any possible way to implement what's best for our students. #leadlap#edchat
A3: Hard question because we are constantly learning & want to do it ALL for our students. Data is not everything, but is such a help when determining priorities. Data does not come only in form of standardized assessment results. Use surveys, observational data, etc. #leadlap
A3: I hope our priorities are always student-centered--always thoughtful about student success. At the end of the day, we should sleep well at night knowing that we did what was BEST for our students--every day, every decision. #LeadLAP#10principles
A3: Put your money where your mouth is (pun intended...) If you defined your core values and you're spending money or measuring other things (like standardized testing - ugh!) then you got your priorities wrong. #leadlap
A3: Our school reviewed the mission statements of our district, major initiatives (GEAR UP, AVID) and our school. After whole staff review we developed a mission with our priorities that align. #LeadLAP
A1: Leaders need core principles so that everyone understands the non-negotiable s. So all can remember that you were not hired to maintain the status quo but rather to be a lead learner and inspire and move others forward to improve and lead as well. #leadlap
Thanks! Never thought of this as disruptive. One of our favorite lines is, "We like to think about things that make sense." This makes sense to us! #LeadLAP
A3- My district maintains consistency with the district's vision and strategic plan which were created by a committee representing ALL stakeholders. #LeadLAP
Yes, but moving toward pos change would assume Ts understand where we need to move. That's a challenge with a STEM economy. How well read are those Ts after that last master's course? #Leadlap
I will! Thanks, Sue! Found out I can sing 🎤 through my SA Face Shield! That’s the drummer and my daughter, bass guitar, in their face shields behind me. #LeadLAP

#LeadLAP A3a My kids went to Tarwater Elementary in the Chandler Unified School District. At least one my my grandkids will go there, too. Leadership seems transparent.. info's accessible https://t.co/qnXd5uZYcn
A3: the priority principle should always be and will always be do what’s best for kids. And sometimes that’s not what’s best for the adults. Important to remember our primary purpose. #leadlap
A3: COLLABORATION is the key to deciding what takes priority in our school. Although there are some decisions that need to be made without soliciting input, there are many times when more voices = more solutions. That also leads to more buy-in and support. #leadlap
#10principles#LeadLAP We need to understand that not priorities have to be full year initiative. Sometimes "short term" priorities are motivating and boost morale. Go for winning moments throughout the year to keep spirits high!
For sure, I think everyone (if they don't already) need to try inviting random groups (not just "student leaders") to staff meetings and welcome/listen to their input. Very powerful to both Ss and Ts. #leadlap#edchat
A3) Our private school Model is #inclusion. Most of the time we decide priorities based on what facilitates equality and support for students and teachers. #ittakesavillage#LeadLAP#10Principles
A4 Give the gift of time. Have real face to face conversations. Acknowledge a colleague's contribution and value. Learn more of their story--Listen. #leadlap
A4: Empathy is a critical attribute of a leader. We must listen as leaders because we will make decisions that others in the organization will not like, but as leaders we have to do what is best for Ss. This is why core values and the “why” are crucial. #leadlap
Is well read more important than knowing the Ss? I would say that those who are well read need to work with those that know the kids best. That combination can create the best plan. Valuing one over the other will probably lead to missed opportunities. #LeadLAP
A2- Treat others the way you want to be treated. Model kindness and caring. Be willing to get your hands dirty along side those you are leading. #leadlap
A4: My mantra Judge Less. Love more. helps me to remember to step into their stories and find out what's happening in their orbit. Don't just ask how they're doing, listen, not to respond, but to understand, to embrace their struggle, to think w/my heart & care for them. #leadlap
#LeadLAP A3b When my kids were in K-12 "curriculum night" was where a P learned about priorities. Looking back, I think they focus too much on policies [dos, don'ts]. They have to move a LOT of people through in a short time so i guess it's a good way.
It’s about giving others permission to be imperfect. It’s on us to be mature enough to realize their hostility has nothing to do us personally but some difficulty they may be going through acceptance #Leadlap
A4: Practicing empathy is just good business. Figure out what is important and don't let anything get in the way! Reschedule observations, sub in order to release a T to work or learn, share thoughtful and meaningful feedback, and (maybe most importantly) LISTEN! #LeadLAP
A4: I try to never forget what it is to be on the front lines in the classroom. I try to listen to teachers as much as I can and make my leadership decisions based on what is best for kids, which is what we all want #leadlap
A3: Sometimes I just don’t know. As a future leader, I’m not actually involved in the decision-making process. I do realize that there is sometimes a battle between what we know to be best practices, state laws, & budget. #leadlap#10principles#edchat
A4: I practice empathy by pausing to reflect on my time in their position, doing their positions with them so that I understand better, and staying current in the classroom. Listening and observing to get a better understanding and be a stronger support. #LeadLAP
A4 Always try to put yourself in other people's shoes. Understand that there are always things people are going through both happy and sad. Your experience is not theirs. Do not project yourself onto your staff #10principles#leadlap
A4: Empathy involves feeling the emotion of another. It is a superpower that we must use often, because it can become dormant over time. #JoyfuLeaders#leadlap
#10principles#LeadLAP Q4 Listening to their stories without telling them yours is the best way to show empathy. When you tell yours, you are now looking for empathy.
A4: being intentional in listening and providing the time to talk held go a long way with empathy. Being willing to do whatever to help out when someone is in need help also #leadlap
A4: It is always my first inclination to teach with a faculty/staff member. I think about positive/negative interactions I had with admin when I was a teacher and also acknowledge the different but just as important stresses and time demands for a teacher vs admin. #leadlap
A4: Love how @BreneBrown puts it...sympathy is feeling FOR and empathy is feeling WITH. Don't put yourself in someone else's shoes. Let them keep their shoes on because it is not about YOU. It is about them. Keep it about them, feel WITH them. #leadlap
A4: For me, empathy in leadership of adults is about awareness. I know that I must listen, observe non-verbal cues, read subtext, ask questions and above all, don't endeavor to help with their problem unless they ask me to. #leadlap
#LeadLAP A4a I learn as I go and improve, overcome, adapt [many thanks to C. Eastwood in "Heartbreak Ridge"] as I go. The org's culture is the guide. What works 1 place might not at the next one.
A4: listen, really listen. And do that lots. My goal is to let every student and staff member see me at least once a day. You never know when something will come up! #LeadLAP
A4: See past their bad days or less than glamorous moments to who they really are in their shining ones. Don’t let their mistakes or shortcomings have any bearing on how you view them. Give them the benefit of the doubt time & time again. Before you judge, offer to help. #leadlap
A4: This one is paramount and dynamic. Show up even when you dread it. Empathy always wins where pride and coldness lose. @BreneBrown We must #RISE to each occasion to lead with vulnerability and authenticity. #Leadlap
A4: Practice empathy by stopping everything to actively listen. Look them in the eye while they speak, put the phone away, and don't talk! If they need to vent/share/cry, give them the opportunity. When they're done, ask if you can share your thoughts. #leadlap
A4: Empathy is demonstrated through our daily interactions- taking time to build relationships, sharing our own learning journey. My staff know so always come from a place of caring. #LeadLAP
A4: Empathy stems from building relationships with people. If you make connections to people, it helps you to remember that they are PEOPLE who come from different backgrounds and experiences. I think humanity and grace are invaluable traits for a leader! #LeadLAP#10principles
A4: Love how @BreneBrown puts it...sympathy is feeling FOR and empathy is feeling WITH. Don't put yourself in someone else's shoes. Let them keep their shoes on because it is not about YOU. It is about them. Keep it about them, feel WITH them. #leadlap
A3- Our district and campus have a process in which we have a needs assessmwnr in which we look at multiple sources of data to create needs. Then we look at strategies and resources needed to overcome deficits. #LeadLAP
A4: I am an empath. Empathy is something I have in spades, and it might actually work against me at times. I can feel overwhelmed by the needs/feelings of those around me. It is going to be challenge for me as I go forward in leadership to find balance. #LeadLAP
A4- Priority everyday! I often struggle to get out of my own head and put myself in other people's shoes.evry1 is dealing w challenges, important to remember it is not always about us, 1 way is to just try to make everyone better off for interacting with us that day. #leadlap
A4. Empathy to me is about knowing that we might all see things through different lenses. Sometimes I need to put the other person’s glasses on. #LeadLAP
A4: I love the #designthinking leading question: How Might We... it puts you in a mindset that everything is possible, and leads you to "get inside the customer's head" in order to succeed. #leadlap
A4: I share my story. I share when I mess up. I laugh at it, and we move on. In doing so, I try to send the message that we all screw up; it’s what you do afterward that defines you and your work. #LeadLAP
A4: Empathy comes naturally when you lead with genuine care for your people balanced with holding them to high expectations because you believe in them. #LeadLAP
A4 Leaders practice empathy by engaging in conversation with their team, listening to their perspectives, & genuinely reflecting on this dialogue. This is partnered with follow-up conversations & support actions that show team members they are valued. #LEADlap
A4) After school check-ins allow my coworkers and I to talk about daily challenges or victories. Sometimes a quick trip to a classroom helps me consider others and leaves us more empowered. #empathy#teachershelpingteachers#LeadLAP
A4: I share my story. I share when I mess up. I laugh at it, and we move on. In doing so, I try to send the message that we all screw up; it’s what you do afterward that defines you and your work. #LeadLAP
Everything you do is either helping or hurting. There is no in between.
How are you going to help your students, colleagues and families ROCK this last quarter?
@StarrCommon@TLCchildtrauma#Path2Serendipity#QuincyOn
A4: Truly listen & respond accordingly. Don't simply sit there & wait for them to finish talking so that you can talk. Sometimes (often), people just want to be heard & simply be responded with compassion. #leadlap#10principles
A4: As someone on the receiving end of compassion & empathy this year, I feel the need to find opportunities to pay it forward. I lift you up; you lift me up. If we all had this feeling of compassion & support, we could be rock stars! #leadlap#10principles#empathy#support
A4: We must have the resolve, empathy, courage and the compassion to stand with our children, families, staff and community today and tomorrow. It is our moral obligation to do so. #Leadlap#10principles
Ask for feedback from those you give feedback to. Make the art of teaching a partnership. Be vulnerable, accept criticisms, work to make positive change. All of this comes down to the secret of empathy... Listen. #LeadLAP#10principles
A question I've been mulling for some time is what would the effect be of beginning to discuss a hypocratic oath for teachers? How would it change our practice to consider as a governing principal, "First do no harm?"
A5: Outcomes for me...positive learning environment, students developing a growth mindset and love of learning, build teacher professional capital #LeadLaP
A5: Do our students...
- strive to make the world a better place?
- have opportunities to find and pursue their passions?
-treat each other and themselves with kindness, courtesy, and respect?
-prepared to be a contributing member of our community?
#leadLAP
A4: I sometimes have too much empathy (if that is possible) and empathy can prevent me from being courageous at times. I’m working on having the “captain conversations” sooner than later while remaining confident that this IS showing empathy. #honesty#courage#leadLAP
A5 One outcome that I hope for my students is that they have an appreciation for this great country and the opportunities that they have to make any of their dreams come true! #leadlap
These are key practices, Heather. Leaders are constantly engaged in forward-thinking and reflecting on how their actions will build capacity in others #leadlap
A5: “Improving outcomes relies on aligning instruction to solid research, ensuring that pedagogical shifts are occurring, holding ourselves (and others) accountable for growth, and showcasing evidence of improvement.” Via @E_Sheninger#leadlap#10principles

A5 unfortunately test scores right now. Whether it’s sbac or maps. But we have a small group of teachers looking to change that into a more student focus. #leadlap
A5: Do our students...
- strive to make the world a better place?
- have opportunities to find and pursue their passions?
-treat each other and themselves with kindness, courtesy, and respect?
-prepared to be a contributing member of our community?
#leadLAP
Good morning #LeadLAP trying to jump onto this amazing chat-A4 I'm working hard to show up and just listen vs wanting to immediately fix a situation or bring it back to something I've been through. It's challenging but I'm trying!:)
#10principles#LeadLAP Every school should be outcome driven. Some outcomes should be the results of the planned initiatives, others as a result of serendipity.
A4 carving out a consistent time that we meet weekly so that we can share & collaborate, if we don’t block out time the calendar can fill up quickly, we must prioritize an opportunity to continue to develop and strengthen relationships #LeadLap
Receiving empathy definitely is a gift that allows us to eventually empathize with others. I’m grateful as a first yr teacher that ppl have been patient to empathaize w/ me thru the ups and downs. #LeadLAP#10principles
A5: an outcome for me is moving schools forward in positive ways, creating those positive moments, working on my own skills and the skills of others and developing, growing and changing as a leader #LeadLAP
A5: we are working on this now with a focus on what we want our Ss to know and be when they graduate—we focus on what they would say now upon grad vs what they would want to see upon grad #leadlap
A5: Our school wants all students to be successful when they leave our walls. Success takes on different forms for different students at different paces. It is our job to help them find that correct path to fill that passion. #LeadLAP
In a perfect world, my outcome indicators are student engagement, student attendance, & satisfaction with the school culture. Kids are in school, excited, and happy to learn! #LeadLAP#10principles
A5: Outcomes for me...positive learning environment, students developing a growth mindset and love of learning, build teacher professional capital #LeadLaP
A5: This is still a work in progress for my school, especially as I am in my first year as principal and some days working to keep my head above water. Currently, the outcome we are looking for is improvement on a daily basis. Giving 100% in all areas. #leadlap
A4: Being transparent and authentic. Our relationships are what drives us, without those nothing else matters. I model with and for students in that regard. Empathy is shown daily #leadlap
A5: We want to base our decision making on the reality of what is happening in our classrooms, not on arbitrary preferences or guess work. At our school the ultimate outcome is empowered citizenship. Students must be active, reflective and incharge of their own learning. #leadlap
A5: We have to be outcome driven. If we can't articulate what our goals/outcomes are, define what success looks like and then steer our organization in that direction, we are just floundering... #LeadLAP
A5: We are redesigning school as a system. We've focused this year on our "outcomes" and they are built around: the whole child focus: social-emotional intelligence, engaged and empowered students, and students as thinkers, learners, doers. #LeadLAP#10principles
"Empowered citizenship"
That is an AWESOME term.
Do what's right because you know what's right and have the power to do what's right!
LOVE IT!
#leadLAP

A5: Want every Ss to
LOVE school
LOVE learning
Be problem-solver
Have strong, positive relationships.
Also :
Read at/above grade level,
Think like mathematicians,
Be curious historians/scientists
Be competent in all grade level expectations.

A5) Outcomes at @Hopetechschool look goals set a/ teachers, Ss, and parents. Then consistent effort and progress in those areas. It’s a very #collaborative outcomes process. Different for each S. #LeadLAP#10principles
Sounds crazy, but I'm longing for SBAC. I reviewed for them & then a lawyer in MO got them thrown out. Now we have assessments created by Ts who don't fully understand the intent of our standards (basically CCSS) & Ps have no way of knowing how Ss compare until ACT. #LeadLAP
A5 It's important we understand the difference between an outcome and a result. Outcomes are inherently somewhat about data whether academic, cultural, engagement. Successful students is the results of all of our outcomes aligning together. #leadlap
A5: When you say "this is an outcome we have". It needs to be followed up with: "this is how we know we have achieved it." or "this is what success will look like". otherwise it's just a wish. #LeadLAP
A6: Are they relationship people? At a recent career fair, a neighboring district brought kids. It was amazing to watch prospective teachers talk with kids. And then to talk to the kids afterwards. #LeadLAP
A6- When adding someone to the team I look for someone who loves kids, is a positive person, is a hard worker, and in recent years have realized important to find people who think differently then I do. #leadlap
A5: For many this comes in the form of “proof of success” such as AP scores, ACT Aspire or ACT scores, graduation rates, etc. I believe there are other measures, but some people need to see a concrete number. What about anecdotal evidence? #leadlap#10principles#edchat
A5) For my ELA class the outcomes look like: have the Ss learned something new, mastered something they struggled with, have they explored beyond just getting a correct answer. Those outcomes make me think I’m on the right track. #LeadLAP#10Principles
A6: I always ask the applicant “How will you make our school a magical place for kids?” I look for talent that is willing to create moments beyond worksheets and textbooks #LeadLAP
A6 #leadlap#10principles@HUMANeX Evidence based selection of staff — talent defined by traits and aligned to Organizational Psychology research —related to “Big 5”
A6: I always ask the applicant “How will you make our school a magical place for kids?” I look for talent that is willing to create moments beyond worksheets and textbooks #LeadLAP
A5: I hope our school is a place where students & staff learn together--where everyone feels valued & knows that they matter! I want our students to leave feeling like they know how to be members of a caring #CommUNITY & productive 21st century citizens! #LeadLAP#10principles
A6 Talent in hiring is about finding people that are here for the right reasons. They want to be a teacher or leader for the right reasons - not just play one on TV :) #leadlap#10principles
A6: talent for me is do they love kids and bring passion to work—we can teach the technical, but it’s true talent finding bucket fillers and people who will give 120% for Ss #leadlap
A6: I'm looking for someone who cares about students and will do whatever it takes to help a student to succeed. Also, someone who is open to giving and receiving feedback. Someone who will be a positive, uplifting member of our school community who helps everyone grow. #LeadLAP
Agreed. I want to track student engagement authentically but it is so hard with kids being engaged and showing engagement is so many different ways. #LeadLAP
Are there any ways that educational leaders have used to track student engagement authentically and consistently?
A5: When you say "this is an outcome we have". It needs to be followed up with: "this is how we know we have achieved it." or "this is what success will look like". otherwise it's just a wish. #LeadLAP
A6 - I look for people who believe in understanding math and not just doing it, those who are open to growing professionally, and above all they must love kids #LeadLAP
A6: When I think of talent in education, I think of...
❤️Relentless nature to learn
❤️Collaborative
❤️Connector
❤️Risk taker
❤️Empowers others
❤️#JoyfulLeaders mindset
#leadlap

A6: When hiring a PE teacher last spring, we had two great candidates.
We went for the one who ran over to kids to greet them in the middle of a conversation with us. His focus was them, even during a high stakes interview. Solid gold.
#LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A6 - I always want to know two things. 1. When was the last time you failed and what you did about it? 2. How do you handle new things? Both tell me about character.
A6: Are they collaborative? Do they talk about content or kids? Are they still learners? Are they willing to take risks? How would we know all of this if we saw you teach? #LeadLAP
A5: We have to constantly check in with our results. Are we doing what are aiming to do? If not, what needs to change? Changing practice can be like turning an aircraft carrier. It isn't easy, but the reason is often urgent. #LeadLAP
What does passion look like in an interview situation? We get candidates in front of kids as much as possible but it is hard during the summer hiring season... #LeadLAP#10principles
A6: Defining "talent" for prospective school leaders goes beyond book smarts and experience. What is their passion and energy level? Is their love for education evident? Are they honoring? Creative? Have a team mindset? Can they collaborate effectively? #leadlap
A6: I look for winners. I always ask, "Tell me about a time you have been competitive." It can be athletics, with self, in music programs, etc. I need people who are competitive so they are looking for wins and will fight to see their students find wins. #LeadLAP
A6: Are you a "we" or "I" to start, that sets the tone. Do you follow the idea of "safe" answers or are you willing to step outside the comfort zone? Can I "see" how you build relationships when you come in to meet? Are you willing to o whatever it takes?
#leadlap
#10principles#LeadLAP Traditional interview models don't lend itself to identifying/recognizing talent. Asking about talent doesn't work either. Model lesson come up short as well. Visiting the prospective employees in their work place will give you the best indication of talent
A6: Explained at the job fair that there's one thing I'm looking for...passionate learners who want to pass that passion for learning on to our Ss...they deserve the best #LeadLAP
Absolutely! The starting point is to clearly define what you mean by "student engagement". It means many different things to different people. A shared definition will give you a starting point for how to identify and measure it. #LeadLAP
A6: I want to know what a teacher will do when faced with a student who doesn't understand a concept after he/she has been taught multiple times. As @carlovmaggio said to me, if someone on my team is doing something, either I allowed it or taught him to do it that way. #LeadLAP
A6: this is so important. I look at hiring as getting married. Can we grow together? Will you add to the magic we have at our school? Will you represent our school and be proud of it? Will you be stick with us when it gets tough #LeadLAP
A6b: look for those who will build a #cultureofyes that supports Ts and Ss with risk-taking and removing barriers to trying new things and being innovative, creative, collaborative #leadlap
A6: I'm looking for a variation of the response, "I love kids" somewhere in the interview. If you go through an entire interview and don't talk about your passion, then you're not the person for my district. #LeadLAP
A6: Student-centered, team-oriented, community-focused, relationship builders who care about people and love learning! Love to hear candidates talk about taking risks, building capacity, and helping students take ownership in their learning! #LeadLAP#10principles
You want a leader who exhibits leadership, models expectations, is fair and consistent, are people persons who build relationships, organized & prepared, excellent listeners problem solvers, visionaries & truly care about their students, staff, parents and community. #leadLAP
Shameless #LeadLAP pitch: If you haven’t read it, the interview questions themselves are worth it. People who come to LLHS say regularly, “I’ve never been asked that!”
A6: We look for foundational vocabulary in their responses that fit our outcomes, listen to what they will bring to the culture, and are there components of life long learning spoken. #LeadLAP#10principles
Agreed. I want to track student engagement authentically but it is so hard with kids being engaged and showing engagement is so many different ways. #LeadLAP

A5: When you say "this is an outcome we have". It needs to be followed up with: "this is how we know we have achieved it." or "this is what success will look like". otherwise it's just a wish. #LeadLAP
A6: Talent is something others don’t possess. Leaders don’t need 10 people with the same skills. Leaders need to hire people who can bring something new/different. They need to be aware of their weaknesses and seek out people who can strengthen the team. #leadlap#10principles
A6: When searching for “talent” I first look for heart. I can help with processes but not with passion. I keep my ears open for one phrase, “I love kids.” If I don’t hear that in a 30 minute conversation about kids, you’re not the right fit for our party! #LeadLAP
A6: Passion and talent are hard to identify within interview questions. I want to see you in action. We are changing the way we are interviewing for positions, because I want to see your talent/passion. #LeadLAP
For all my #LeadLAP friends... If you have not read "The Principled Principal" by our awesome hosts today, it is one you will want to read. https://t.co/iecvVOpuB5#10Principles
A6. It's not only looking for T who have a passion, engaging teaching techniques, but how you work with our Ss. What are some different techniques, used to get our kids to respond for behavior, etc. #leadlap
A7: You can't do everything at once. Listen. Be present. Build a reputation of being out and about. Be enthusiastic at all times, even, and especially, when you don't feel enthusiastic. Have fun. Model your learning. #LeadLAP
A7- Your first focus should be getting to know your Ts Ss Ps and other staff members...build relationships and trust first...then you and your team can move mountains together. #leadlap
A7 Know what you stand for. Listen and respect the views of others but never compromise on what is best for kids. Do that and you will be fine no matter what #leadlap#10principles
Agreed, without our students reading for pleasure their whole education is affected. Support their love of reading, support the school library and librarian and academic attainment goes up. #LeadLAP
A7: You can't do everything at once. Listen. Be present. Build a reputation of being out and about. Be enthusiastic at all times, even, and especially, when you don't feel enthusiastic. Have fun. Model your learning. #LeadLAP
A7:
1. Listen more than you talk
2. Get to know the culture by sitting down with every teacher, staff member, parent leader, community leader
3. Spend as much time at recess, lunch, before school, and in classrooms getting to know students AND THEIR NAMES!
#LeadLAP
A7: Don't lose contact with where you began. You were in a classroom once, you know how it was. As a leader, get back in there on a regular basis. Volunteer to sub, be an aide, cover a duty. And for goodness sake, learn the names of all the Ss. #LeadLAP
A7: Do what's right for kids. Listen to and learn from your faculty and staff members and other admin. Listen to your students. Always seek to grow professionally. Hold fast to your principles because you will be challenged on them. #LeadLAP
A7: Your effectiveness as a leader will be determined by your ability to build trust and relationships. Model the way. Walk the talk. Be a PIRATE! #LeadLAP

A7 #leadlap#10principles Advice LISTEN -lead with your core values -accept silence -don’t agree if you don’t agree —participate in Twitter chats —join professional leadership orgs
A6: “When you hire new person your goal is to have your school become more like them, not to have them become more like your school” via @ToddWhitaker#leadlap#10principles
A6- Can they build relationships with Ss? That’s #1 with me. Having a solid classroom culture is so important. Without that, it doesn’t matter what they’re teaching. Our school has a lot of high-trauma Ss that need to feel comfortable and cared about. #Iloveourteachers#leadlap
A7 Remember that you do not have to do it all yourself. Delegation is a huge part of leadership and knowing how to let go but still be in charge is a skill to be worked on. #LeadLAP
A7: Don't lose contact with where you began. You were in a classroom once, you know how it was. As a leader, get back in there on a regular basis. Volunteer to sub, be an aide, cover a duty. And for goodness sake, learn the names of all the Ss. #LeadLAP
A7: Leadership is a collaborative effort. A true leader cannot look back and I articulate one person responsible for leading but has groups of people working together to drive an organization. #LeadLAP
A6: I look for a team player, child focused, passion, growth mindset and pedagogy. The Last one is important but that I can help develop if the candidate has the others. #LeadLAP
I'm not an administrator, but my advice is to listen and learn the stories of the people in the school, learn their names, strengths, talents, and dreams. (Kids and adults) #LeadLAP
A7: This chat is a great summary for A7. Know and lead with your principles, don't attempt to do it all alone, have empathy, and keep your eyes on your why -which for a principal is students/staff. #LeadLAP
A7 I'm with @abney45 on pitching #LEADlap 😊☠️ first advice for a new leader would be read this book before anything else. I would also say show your staff who you are and why you're there and remind them as much as absolutely possible.
Yes & pleasure doesn't always come from fiction. When professionals read for professional growth their growth will likely affect their Ss in a million ways. #LeadLaP
A7: It is very easy to take things to heart and lead with emotion. Understand you are leading something much bigger than yourself. Seek to understand all sides before making decisions. Thick skin is a necessity as you will have to have fierce conversations. #Leadlap
#10principles#leadlap A7 Resist the urge to take any position just to get that leadership position. As important as it is to pick the right leader, it is important for you to pick the right place to bring your leadership skills.
A7: Be fair to yourself. You won’t always get it right. Do your best. Ask for help. Acknowledge it when you get it wrong and do better the next time. Never forget to be a learner as well as a leader. #leadlap#10principles#edchat#schoolleaders#lifelonglearning
A7 know your own belief system, observe, listen, be positive always and take time to reflect before making decisions (make sure to scan the whole balcony otherwise the unseen dominoes fall) #leadlap
A7) I would say don’t REACT to obstacles. Easy to get disappointed when we meet challenges. But continue to look at the vision, without letting the challenges completely stop you. If you want it to happen, it CAN happen. #LeadLAP#10principles
#10principles#leadlap A7 Resist the urge to take any position just to get that leadership position. As important as it is to pick the right leader, it is important for you to pick the right place to bring your leadership skills.
A7- Relationships first, learn values of where you are at and communicate your values and then live them out while helping to lead, shape and model the values of your school/district. #LeadLAP
A7: Focus on your stakeholders and build relationships--these two things will help you to take care of your culture! Communicate your vision and brand your school! Surround yourself with people who share your core values and vision! #LeadLAP#10principles
A7 Have a vision and push for it. Moderates are great for settling arguments and compromising. However, we can't compromise on what's best for students. If you know what's up and you have your research - push forward! Don't let bureaucracy diminish your dreams. #leadlap
Yes, yes, yes :) that is why I started an online book club for school library staff.https://t.co/cG7rHjLOzy Teachers need to lead by example too. Do as I do not do as I say. #LeadLAP
Don't lead within a bubble. Get out, listen, connect and relate. Find a mentor to help guide you. You may have moments of the imposter syndrome. But you are there for a reason. Stay true to your values. Learn from your others as well as your own experiences.
#leadlap
A7: Be vulnerable 2: Find a PLN and absorb the collective knowledge that your PLN shares. 3: Reflect every single day. 4: Do what you love each day in the presence of those who love what you do... or find a place where what you can. #loveistheanswer#LeadLAP

1. Harness the energy of potential
2. Tap into your imagination
3. Discover your strengths and focus on them
4. Learn to build momentum
5. Appreciate those that help

Q5: Maybe something is lost in translation for me.... IMO it's best to be somewhere in the way between outcome and process. More to the outcome side (for me at least) #leadlap
A7: As a new leader have conversations with staff, students and parents. Find out what is important to them, what they love about the school and where they think improvement is needed. #LeadLAP
