Here is to a great night of learning!
A1 We can begin by becoming expert kidwatchers who notice that kids are telling us by their actions how much these visual paper trails support their learning. If we’re very wise, we would nurture and elevate that thinking. #G2Great
A1 I was introduced to this topic from @TannyMcG herself a few years ago. I have used it ever since while reading professional text. It helps me remember my notes in a deeper way. It is now my “go-to” for note taking! #G2Great#ReadSketchThink
A1: I have been sketchnoting personally for about four years, and doodling for a lifetime before that. I love teaching some of these techniques I the kids I work with! #G2Great
A1 Reading/viewing/listening with a pen in hand always helps me deepen my thinking. Writing and sketching keeps me tuned in and supports my comprehension and retention of ideas and concepts. #G2Great
#g2great A1 While I'm inclined to relate this to literacy, I've actually offered "visualization" for problem solving in math. Ss are sketching what they see happening in the problem and using words to support thinking to access the math.
A1 When I need to focus while reading or listening I often choose to make my thinking visible. Keeps me from daydreaming. Helps to tune out the noise in my head! : ) #G2Great#InkAndIdeas

Please tell Dr. Escalante how much we appreciate inspiring students to start their own commitment to learning early. So honored to have you on #G2great Ki
A1: I have tried different visualization strategies. One being Map it where students visualize different events and draw them out. I find that giving students multiple avenues to express their thinking makes it easier for everyone. #g2great
A1: When we noodle our ideas, we build “tracks in the snow” about what we are thinking—interpretations & misinterpretations are important in our meaning making process. #G2Great
A1. I’ve always been a nervous doodler and didn’t realize until Tanny that it was actually helping me concentrate and focus. Now I’m a proud doodler. #g2great
A1 I want to introduce sketchnoting to my HS students as a way to to draw out visual summaries of their learning and questions on a given topic or a given unit. It is a great way to synthesize information & review. I always want it to be a differentiated option for Ss. #g2great
A1: when I take my own notes I use multiple pen colors to highlight, circle, etc. I doodle small symbols for what I want to remember. Have not explored this much with Ss, but want to try it. #G2Great
A1: I have been sketchnoting personally for about four years, and doodling for a lifetime before that. I love teaching some of these techniques I the kids I work with! #G2Great
A1: I have found that sketchnoting helps me focus more - I tend to get overwhelmed with too much auditory information, and it helps me filter out a lot of background noise. #G2Great
A1 I always include a visual reference when I create anchor charts WITH children (and invite them to do the same). The visual offers a cognitive HOOK that extends the print in a mutually supportive way. #G2Great
A1 I’ve used sketchnoting myself for professional reading and durin PD, but I’ve only dabbled in the classroom. I’d like to use it more as a tool for students. I’m betting Tanny’s book will get me working in the direction! #g2great

A1: I definitely encourage students to draw pictures to help them brainstorm and elaborate on ideas for writing. I need to work on incorporate this strategy into reading as well! #g2great#LitBankStreet
A1:in K, visuals are key to developing storytelling, showing comprehension and understanding of just about everything 🙂. Much time at the start of year is devoted to learning how to draw and express ideas visually. #G2Great
#g2great We are studying character in reading and I'm now curious how we could incorporate sketchnotes into Ss repertoire. My next lesson is internal/external, so head is spinning w/ideas at moment!

A1 John Medina’s Brain Rule #10: VISION TRUMPS ALL OTHER SENSES. We have the research to support this visual shift so now we need to explore how we can support and extend that research in meaningful ways. #G2Great
A1 Visuals are great to use during PE activities to demonstrate especially for ELL students who don't understand the language yet. #G2Great#becomingateacher
A1: I've seen YouTube as a great was to give students a supplemental source of information. Hearing concepts explained in a different way by someone other that your teacher can be useful especially in science and math #G2Great#becomingateacher
Without a doubt! They take it and run. I have used this from K-5 at my school, as well as presenting about it in my son’s middle school and for teachers. The kids are a lot less nervous about the process (for the most part). #g2great
A1: I have been sketchnoting personally for about four years, and doodling for a lifetime before that. I love teaching some of these techniques I the kids I work with! #G2Great
A1 visuals are excellent for our ELLs who struggle with oral instruction. Visuals allow them to put words into context and get meaning out of the lesson #g2great#becomingateacher
I would just like to point out the we have MANY preservice teachers here tonight. Just soak that in for a moment #G2Great friends. These future educators are making their own learning a priority before they are even out in the field. I find that so very inspiring! ❤️
A1. A great way to teach visually is to always have a picture to represent the topic you are addressing and to reference it to help connect the topic material. #becomingateacher#G2Great
A1: In our class tonight, @kescalante_edu had us do the Color Personality Test. This is an amazing way to get to know our students a little better and in my future classroom I could use candies to demonstrate the different colors. #g2great#becomingateacher
I share picture books with kids to help us get past our “art scars”. Favs are “The Girl Who Never Msde Mistakes” and “Beautiful Oops”. #G2Great#InkAndIdeas

A1: Great question! I’m still in my observations but I’ve seen my host teacher use lots of visuals and encourage her students to draw a picture to explain their thinking. #g2great#becomingateacher
A1: As reading: What I'm seeing... (labels near the heart parts that most made an impact) or what I'm seeing... what it makes me think (or wonder... or feel... or believe or now understand...) #g2great
A2 providing blank paper, sketchbooks, introducing digital tools such as the 53 paper app on iPad. When I go back into the classroom I am going to provide my Ss with materials and experiences where they can make learning visible through sketching. #G2Great#ReadSketchThink
A2 I use sketchnoting marginalia style in my books and references as I read. It really was a natural process that supports and enriches my thinking. We need to explicitly model and teach the same thinking WE use. #G2Great
A1 I showed my Ss some examples from a chapter of a bevel, and now a few of them think they can’t listen to our read aloud without sketchnoting! They love it! #G2great
#G2Great#RDG672 In our grad class learning from @TannyMcG - we use CC to learn about strategies for readers! Making our thinking visible through Twitter tonight!
A1: Watching videos and creating models are great visual ways for students to learn and deepen their thinking. I would love to learn more! #g2great#becomingateacher
A1. Pictures, diagrams, and videos are great visuals to promote learning. The teacher I’m observing currently uses the whiteboard and videos all the time. #becomingateacher#G2Great
A2: I have experimented with lots of different tools for myself, but when modeling for teachers or in a classroom try to stick to what they already have on hand. My go-to set right now is flair pens and twistable colored pencils. #G2Great
A1: Sketches can also show understanding of words and vocab... including homophones, homographs, nonliteral connotations, and multiple meaning words. Prepares students for greater comprehension- or using words regularly & conventionally while speaking or writing. #G2Great
A2: Art is in the eye of the beholder. When I have Ss sketch to stretch in their notebooks, the art is just one part of it. Conveying ideas through choice of design, use of space, captions, labels, etc. counts and makes a difference in the msgs being captured. #G2Great
A2: analog- good old-fashioned colored pencils and notebooks. Digital- drawing tools on seesaw or in the notes app. Important that there is a breadcrumb trail of thinking left in some capacity. #G2Great
A2: I have a few different sketch pad apps on my ipad with my Apple Pencil. I still just love a paper and pencil notebook and document camera though to show my kids #G2Great
Hey #G2Great ! Kimberly from north TX jumping in late!
A2 I read through The Sketchnote Handbook this summer and it is a great resource for getting started #sketchnoting .
A2: I’ve seen students in my observations use Flipgrid to create short videos where they explain a concept they are learning about. They can add pictures and graphics too. #g2great#becomingateacher
A2 It seems to me that the sky is the limit. I seem to do my best learning when I use a pencil or pen but I am intrigued to explored other digital sketchnoting alternatives. #G2Great
A2 What I love about sketchnoting, is you don't have to go complicated. If you start out, use Google Drawings, Explain Everything, Padlet, Google Presentation. If kids are scared of drawing, have them use images, fonts, words. Let them be creative. Let them try! #g2great
A1: Visuals help students build connections between the abstract ideas with concrete context. Visual aids bring a lot of 'aha' moment to the young kids. #g2Great#becomingateacher
A2 I think writer's notebooks are a fantastic place for incorporating sketchnoting: responding to writing, planning for writing, and as a text on its own. So many possibilities! #G2Great
Many of the sketchnotes featured in #InkAndIdeas were created digitally, and just as many were with good ‘ole paper & pen. It’s the AND not the OR! #G2Great
In reply to

A2: ReadWorks & Prodigy are great digital resources for students to use as instructional practice. I am currently working in a second grade classroom that uses these and they LOVE it! #g2great#becomingateacher
A2. Make colorful, large posters and use them to present materials, and possibly make a game where one poster is the question and three posters are answer choices and the students get to choose which poster they think is the correct answer. #g2great
A2: my 13 year old sister lives on @YouTube and from what I have experienced on YouTube there are so many creative ways students can learn and create material for the classroom. #G2Great#becomingateacher
A2: Letting students find what is comfortable for them. They can use colored pencils, markers and/or crayons (or highlighters) as they see fit (we don't have colored pens on supply list) #g2great
A2 It’s essential to teach a wide range of sketchnoting options (analog + digital) and then allow kids to choose what works for each experience. I don’t see it as a one-size-fits-all process but letting sketchnoting match the sketchNOTER #G2Great
A2. Also, provide materials such as k-necs and ball and string for the students to use to conduct science experiments or make and answer math problems and other things. #g2great
A1 I have found the picture book ‘Ish’ to be a helpful way to introduce you to elementary Ss. Then the expectation is set that sketches are always ish and that is OK! #G2Great
A2 Long ago, we used a strategy called "Crazy Artist" to encourage Ss to sketch thoughts about their reading in margin of short texts. It's hard to find balance of quick sketches and those that get so intricate. 9/10 y/o's may struggle w/knowing how much time to devote.#g2great
A3 I am NO artist, but I make some good sketchnotes! The thinking is probably the most important but adding graphics that make sense and help draw connections is also VERY important. So it’s both! #G2Great#ReadSketchThink
A3 No I don’t believe you do need to be an artist - which is a big relief for me. A thoughtful scribble can have big meaning to the creator when it means little to nothing to others. Quite frankly, it’s all about the creator in this case! #G2Great
Stick figures are just fine. It’s all about capturing information. Basic stick figures, speech bubbles, thinking clouds, and simple boxes are great starting points. #G2Great
Subbed in library for two days. Follow up to Marion’s Librbray Book, has kinders draw pictures about situations where they read books #g2great They sketched and wrote to make sense of what they understood. sketching their way of taking notes.
A3: I think it can be both but the thinking is what matters. Unfortunately with the instagram and pintrest lovers of the world we don't see a lot of striving note examples and teachers tend to get stuck valuing pretty over product. #G2Great
A3. Both can be very helpful. I think the thinking is the stronger source of information as it can encompass much more material and strategy, but a well designed image can provide a great description and provoke much thought. #G2Great
A3: I believe that the thinking is more important than design but there does need to be some level of cohesion in the design, otherwise we risk confusing our students #g2great#becomingateacher
A3: Both are important! The design is there to supplement the thinking, so if the design isn't great, at lease the comprehension and thinking are improving #G2Great#becomingateacher
A3: I have students who get very self-conscious/upset when their drawings don't look "perfect". It's important for students to know that drawing is never perfect, and we are all artists in our own ways. The thinking behind the design is most important #g2great#LitBankStreet
A2. One student in the class I’m observing created a word problem for a multiplication problem. To further her understanding, I would have asked her to draw a picture and share it with the class. #becomingateacher#G2Great
A3: As someone who is not very good at drawing, I would hope that thinking is more important than the stick figure I am drawing. It is also important to understand that being creative is more than just knowing how to draw. #G2Great#becomingateacher
A3: I believe that both the thinking and the design are important. Some students learn though an artistic lens and others through a more analytical lens. Both show merit. #g2great#becomingateacher
A3: I hope you don’t have to be an artist, otherwise I have to bow out! I think it’s the idea that the sketch makes your thinking visible, whatever that may look like. In that sense they’re equally important. #G2Great
A3. I feel as though both the thinking and the design are important for different reasons, as they engage different groups of learners. #g2great#becomingateacher
A3 I think thinking is more important to sketchnoting. Although artistic skills are important, I feel that students need to be able to properly write out their ideas and thoughts before they get into drawing. #G2Great#becomingateacher
A3 I have a colleague who has her Ss do something similar and calls it a “Brain Dump.” I think this term can really appeal to those who say, “I’m not artistic.” #G2great
A3 Sketchnotes can be about content AND design. Colors, lettering styles, shapes, lines, etc. can contribute to the meaningfulness of our notes. Again, its the AND not the OR for me! #G2Great#InkAndIdeas
A3 I have always worried that like everything in education, we turn it into a TASK rather than a personal process. We need to loosen the reins and allow kids to launch their own visual exploratory quest. #G2Great
A3. I think both are important! While the thinking drives content, visuals can be a great tool for organizing information as well! #g2great#becomingateacher
A3: I think it depends on your purpose. If you are sketchnoting or class or for yourself, the process and the thinking and information captured is most important. The only time the “art” is equally important is when you are sketchnoting for a public audience. #G2Great
A3 I am definitely a novice, but for me personally it is the process of creating. The end result is a nice artifact, but the process of sketchnoting is what helps me understand and remember. #G2Great
Yes this is not about perfect this is about using the best tools for our learning. A combo of both #g2great whatever helps the learner sharing their learning
I don't call it sketchnoting...I call it dual coding. Here's something I wrote about it with fantastics comments from some of my students and a few experts on the subject:
https://t.co/0l1hF5JsOj#g2great#InkAndIdeas
A3 It is the thinking & the idea design that is most important. How they get that across belongs to kids. We should not force an image on them. Have them call out to their creativity. We should not kill a child's creativity because it isn't our representation or vision. #g2great

Sketchnoter @insearchofbees shows us how content AND design can work together to convey meaning and capture what is important. Joy has live sketchnoted in my sessions @ILAToday#G2Great#InkAndIdeas
A3 I used to see picture perfect images of visual experts like Tanny and found it out of my league. I’ve since realized that unless I share it professionally, it’s the thinking it illuminates rather than how it looks that matters. #G2Great
Hmmmm I have a small group working on summarizing. Now you have me thinking - this might be a great strategy to help them pick out and synthesize important information. #G2Great
The danger in making things "pretty" is that you have one person's view of what is beautiful or pretty. We need to be open to so many more way of expressing ideas. The "pretty" container does not mater. #g2great
A3 - the thinking is the goal ... listen to a lecture, podcast, read a chapter and sketch your own thinking .., it organizes the thinking in your brain so that you recall ... it is a phenomenal learning tool .. for example #G2Great
A3: Getting the ideas down is a great place to start and then editing and adding to the design helps dig deeper and flesh out ideas #LitBankStreet#g2great
The danger in making things "pretty" is that you have one person's view of what is beautiful or pretty. We need to be open to so many more way of expressing ideas. The "pretty" container does not mater. #g2great
A3 The thinking is absolutely most important, but maybe as we get more sophisticated the design starts to carry meaning as well. Size, colors, placement, and links between images tell their own story. #g2great
We are also working on summarizing in fourth grade... having students sketch thoughts as they read to help them summarize is such a great idea, and I know several students who will love it #g2great#LitBankStreet
We can call it many things: edusketching, visual representation, graphic marginalia, etc. The important thing is that we offer it up as a viable response option for students! #InkAndIdeas#G2Great
A4 I believe that if we keep our eyes wide open, we would be amazed at the unique ways that our kids are teaching us about these visual references. Kids are always talking if we can just stop talking long enough to NOTICE! #G2Great
A4: When we collect our sketchnotes across time, we can line up how our thinking has either stayed the same or changed = powerful reflection tool for Ss. #G2Great
A4 I have learned tons over the years, One of those being not one method of __ works for all Ss. We need to allow and give them tools that meet their needs individually. For me, sketchnoting makes sense, traditional note taking doesn’t. But that’s me. #G2Great#ReadSketchThink
A4 I have learned that you need to be open to new possibilities. It is all about the dialogue & conversations. I show Ss how I use post-its, how I note take, they show me their strategies. We discuss, assess, share and find way of combining & making choices stronger. #g2great
A4: That there isn't one right way! :-) and the way that works for you/makes sense for you is pretty awesome. (need to also tell this to myself as I build my confidence with this newer-for-me style) Fitting our work into a box or comparing it to others isn't helpful #g2great
A3 I'd like to think that the deep thinking yields thoughtful design. I don't think the execution is critical once the thinking has taken place. If anything, it will seal the deal on committing the info to memory. #g2great
A4 The traditional notetaking I learned in school put up boundaries to my thinking. After HS I broke down those barriers and created my own unorthodox & somewhat disorganized system that works for me. (YAY ME!) #G2Great
A4 Over my years as a teacher, I have seen that everyone thinks differently. I am definitely more of a bullet-list person (sometimes with arrows thrown in), but others love webs, full sentences, doodle scenes, etc. it’s all good stuff if it works for you! #G2great
A4 Kids have taught me how important it is to just give it a try. I'm hesitant to try sometimes because I'm afraid to fail. Kids just jump right in enjoy the process. #g2great
A4 Everytime I explore sketchnoting with teachers and/or students, I learn something new. The students of @charrod showed me how an affinity group of sketchnoters can work together to make thinking visible. Here’s a photo of The Sketchy Lunch Bunch! #G2Great#InkAndIdeas
A4: sketchnoting can be collaborative - 1st grade author study posters and responses. Each class leaned and sketched about a different author and posted them in the hall for other classes to leave comments and questions on. Such a cool way to share the learning! #G2Great
A4: taking notes should be individualized- what makes sense for the learner? I’m more of a traditional/linear note taker b/c that’s how I was taught. My students definitely aren’t. It’s about giving the choice to see what works for them. #G2Great
A4 It’s so important to celebrate what works for our kids but then teach them new thinking that could enrich what they are already doing. It’s not about assigning but exposing them to these powerful tweaks and additions #G2Great
A4 having taught Ss what I call “visual notetaking” for about 4 years-Ss teach me each year.Putting your thinking & learning into combinations of words & images is a useful tool-especially to EL Ss-to organize & recall thought.Kids know it’s not about art. But learning. #G2Great
This is SO important! No two sketchnotes look alike, and that’s part of the beauty of the process. Each brain interprets and processes information in its own way. #g2great
A4: That there isn't one right way! :-) and the way that works for you/makes sense for you is pretty awesome. (need to also tell this to myself as I build my confidence with this newer-for-me style) Fitting our work into a box or comparing it to others isn't helpful #g2great
A4 Here is a great example of giving students that is empowering/agency, what you will, to demonstrate how they learn whether with SketchNotes, paper research or model it in makerspace #g2great
We cannot forget that Cara. I just posted my notes from a wonderful webinar on differentiation from Carol Tomlinson on that very topic https://t.co/YdqdFTSTlc#G2Great
A4 Over my years as a teacher, I have seen that everyone thinks differently. I am definitely more of a bullet-list person (sometimes with arrows thrown in), but others love webs, full sentences, doodle scenes, etc. it’s all good stuff if it works for you! #G2great
I remember getting one of the greatest compliments I ever got- my HS English teacher told me she loved the way I took notes because it was just like how my brain worked. I guess I found ways that worked for me, too. #g2great
A5 for me it’s absolutely focus. I have ADHD so focusing is a daily, by the minute, struggle for me. This helps me calm my brain and bring focus to everything I do. #G2Great#ReadSketchThink
A5: Since there isn’t an answer sheet for sketchnoting, it gives Ss freedom and autonomy to take risks and make choices for how they want to show what they are thinking and what they know. #G2Great
A5 Definitely all three. Choice allows kids to bring themselves to the learning table while memory and focus elevate the learning itself. I think they all work so beautifully in tandem to create a powerful learning experience. #G2Great
A5: all of the above. But, for me personally, (as I age), the memory part is HUGE! I need to be creative to find ways to help "the new" sink in and then be easily retrieved whenever needed. #g2great
A5 I think that their memory would benefit from the dual coding! Focus would get better with practice. I have a few Ss who might go off on a tangent and doodle about other things! #G2Great
A5 If transfer is the ultimate goal of learning (and it is) then these three features of choice, memory and focus providing a stepping stone to transfer What could be more important than this perfect marriage of awesome. #G2Great
Sketchnotes offer up so much choice! I created this with a class as we discussed what kinds of things might end up in a sketchnote. Options galore. #G2Great#InkAndIdeas@HeinemannPub
A5: I would say all. Kids try to rush everything and by asking them to take their time and be thoughtful in their sketches they get the moments to really let the thinking set in. #g2great
Yes. Me too. For me it’s distracting background noise - I have trouble tuning it out, so sketching in meetings an presentations really helps me focus. #g2great
A5 for me it’s absolutely focus. I have ADHD so focusing is a daily, by the minute, struggle for me. This helps me calm my brain and bring focus to everything I do. #G2Great#ReadSketchThink
A5 I want to work on all three areas. Just like education should not be viewed in silos, we need to approach visual note taking with similar approach. Work on being all around good students. Going back to the classroom, I see the challenges ahead & how this can support. #G2Great
A5: My students would definitely benefit from strategies to enhance focus. Often I find lack of focus during reading comes when there is not enough accessibility in the lesson... sketch-noting would open access and increase focus #g2great#LitBankStreet
A5: I think it helps with memory. My Ss are little, sometimes they can’t remember things that just happened. Notes help them remember what they thought and also how they felt. Similar to BHH. #G2Great
A5 For me, the choice and adaptability is the most important part of sketchnoting. Focus and memory are bonuses and are what can hook a person into it. #G2great
A4 Hands down, most important thing Ss have taught me over last 2 academic yrs is that they are seeking more visual structures for choice independent reading. Knowing graphic novels are on the rise, we need to think about how this can transfer to other academic areas. #g2great
A5 I think we often fail to draw student attention to what we know a process can do in our lives. It’s not just about teaching the process but teaching how our brains work as we elevate sketchnoting to include a student centered WHY. #G2Great
A5 If transfer is the ultimate goal of learning (and it is) then these three features of choice, memory and focus providing a stepping stone to transfer What could be more important than this perfect marriage of awesome. #G2Great
Ultimately, sketchnotes can help us to merge our thinking with the text (or with visual art, realia, music, etc) It’s all about meaning-making. #G2Great#InkAndIdeas
A6 We need to create our own systems of coding our sketchnotes. Elements that help us remember or bring us back to the topic quicker. This will ensure that the thinking is sticky! #G2Great#ReadSketchThink I like to use big ! to mean LOVE THIS or OMG
A6 As a NON artist I’m so intrigued by this idea. I used to see that as a roadblock but I now it seems more of an invitation. Since this is a visual paper trail of my own thinking/learning, the getting there seems far more relevant than the arrival. #G2Great
A5 I think all three are important. It’s amazing what students do when given choice. It enhances their memory because they are writing notes in a way that works for them to remember the information. I’ve seen a huge increase in focus when my students are sketchnoting. #G2Great
A6 The more we doodle, the more doodles we have control over! We collect a variety of doodles that we use repeatedly and quickly which frees us up to do more thinking! #G2Great
A6: Oh, gosh...the more you sketch, the faster you get because you develop signature ways of showing certain concepts that become second nature. You are basically building a high-frequency icon vocabulary. #g2great
A6 I love the term visual vocabulary! It also helps me see sketchnoting as something I can learn by increasing this vocabulary. The more examples I see, the more tools I have to make my own. #G2great
A6 We need to shakeup our view of learning & education. There are many ways to express ourselves & our thoughts. It isn't only in sentences & paragraphs. Let us be open to creativity. Let us be open to listening to the hearts & passions of students. #g2great
A6 Our visual vocabularies can grow as we give ourselves permission to explore this new “language”. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you learn new sketchnoting features as you notice the sketchnotes of others and “try your hand” at what you see! #G2Great#InkAndIdeas
A6 I love the idea of growing visual vocabularies and I think that comes with practice and the freedom to explore the possibilities unfettered by “rules.” We need to offer kids freedom to engage in that same exploratory thinking. #G2Great
Unsure of what to put on the page when sketchnoting while reading or listening? Here are two questions to ask yourself. These help me to determine importance and get started with pen on page. #G2Great#InkAndIdeas
A6 This makes sense to me bc I think in images. I love analogies and I tend to sketch those as I learn. I think this will be more common in the coming years. For example having a school wide way of annotating is an excellent practice. #G2Great
A6 The more we expose Ss to the choice to sketchnote, the more likely they will be to use the strategy as they will become comfortable with it. Squeaky wheel gets the grease! #g2great
A6: for example, it’s not “how to draw a brain” - it’s “how do I draw a brain?” Once you figure that out, you speed up because you draw it that way over and over. #G2Great
A6. As an adult I have this nagging question on if I'm "doing it right" when it comes to #sketchnotes. Do students too?
Or do they naturally pick up visual language similar to learning a 2nd oral language quicker?? #g2great
Ultimately, sketchnotes can help us to merge our thinking with the text (or with visual art, realia, music, etc) It’s all about meaning-making. #G2Great#InkAndIdeas
A6 The idea of developing visual vocabularies extends across languages and opens up the classroom to honor different cultural backgrounds. Very helpful perspective to respect and encourage second language learners! #LitBankStreet#g2great
A6 We may need to do some Unteaching first. So many kids see their visual limitations rather than how they can create their own visual personalities. That needs to be a big part of the conversation around sketchnoting. #G2Great
I think that some of those seeds of doubt were planted long ago. Tanny always emphasizes that it’s not about PRETTY. We have to keep reiterating that! #G2Great
A6. As an adult I have this nagging question on if I'm "doing it right" when it comes to #sketchnotes. Do students too?
Or do they naturally pick up visual language similar to learning a 2nd oral language quicker?? #g2great

Just like you need to learn how to effectively communicate in written words and oral talk, I’d have to learn how to use pictures to communicate meaning #g2great
Students are just like us. Some just jump in and do it and others fret about being correct or “doing it right”. It just take time and practice. #g2great
I tried teaching my Ss last year and I had a few that didn't get the concept of a sketch! They spent way too much time on a beautiful drawing! Reteach!! #G2Great
A7 Yes absolutely there is a place for all of the above. If we want to enrich “traditional” forms of notetaking then we have to be careful we don’t turn sketchnoting into a traditional version of what is possible. No limitations! #G2Great
A7: I’m thinking about the benefits of Ss being consumers of sketchnotes (peers) coupled w/conversation + producers and the empowerment the two combined can create! #G2Great
A7 I am going to try and model ways teachers can incorporate these strategies into their day-to-day teachings, just adding in components where it would naturally fit to offer more choice and personalization. #G2Great#ReadSketchThink

A7 In our next unit, after introducing this concept to students, I want to challenge them to build their sketchnote during the unit. This way they could see the evolution of their thinking as our learning progresses. Who knows, maybe a private less from @woodard_julie ? #g2great
A7: I’m taking away the idea that it’s ok for notes to not follow a standard outline form (including my own). Go in students the chance to try out what form works best for them is a must. #g2great
A7: I learned so much from tonight's chat! Going to try sketch-noting, having students doodle as they read, and incorporating drawing into visualizing lessons and reading responses #g2great#LitBankStreet

A7 I definitely want to find ways to incorporate visual sketchnotes as an option for Ss when writing about reading: chapter books, short passages, info texts, etc. #g2great
A7 I’m going to consider my own notetaking style a playground of possibilities. I’ll just keep my mind open and let those possibilities flow. I love that Tanny has shown us a new side of this entire process! #G2Great
A7. Show me what you learned.
Open up the choices. Oral, visual, musical, drama . . .
Whatever "coding" students want to use - their choice of medium!

We (and our students) can sketchnote in the moment and after the fact. We can sketchnote to synthesize, to reflect, to focus, to share. The possibilities are endless. Sketchnote summaries, exit tickets…and more! #G2Great#InkAndIdeas
Thanks for some great ideas for me as a student and also as a teacher. Excited to delve more into different kinds of note taking. Thanks @TannyMcG and #G2Great tribe
A7 I can’t wait to go back through our #G2Great@wakelet after the chat tonight. I’ll post our wake later but you can also find them all here; https://t.co/T86mFXst2F

That is so awesome- having the notes grow with the learning .. and private GHO lessons have happened before, friend. One way to to cover your kids tables with butcher paper and we practice some together— #g2Great
I’ve had kids sketchnote while listening to a podcast. They don’t have time to spend on a detailed drawing because it keeps going! And I created my own sketchnote on the document camera at the same time to model. @Brains_On is a great kids’ podcast! #G2Great

That’s such a great idea Emily. And the sharing afterwards would be amazing to see how everyone has different representation of what they heard. #G2Great
