So true, Debby! It can be easy to forget at our fast pace and with lots of "to do" lists, can't it?
a1 find a mentor. Don't be afraid to try new things but don't try too many at once. Relationship is everything.

A1) you will fail! Failure is part of every great learning process. Never stop learning!

A1 Dont be afraid to ask other Ts about their experiences
A1 addendum: Don't be afraid to say "I don't know the answer to that, let's go find out together!"
A1 - use twitter for advise, guidance, to vent, to collaborate, to learn
A1: Is this really what you want to do with your life, a calling...or a job. This matters when the work gets hard and it will.
Thanks for following - great to have you here
Do you recommend your mentor is another teacher at the school or someone totally separate?
This is so important! Stay focused and expand involvement as you gain comfort. https://t.co/B3ggXsrTkg
A1: Don't try to do EVERYTHING. Focus on a few things that matter and do them well. Spend time getting to know Ss.
Yes getting involved in the community in any way possible is really important

Hi , how is life treating you all? Leslie down in Mty, MX. My favorite part of the mountain as evidence https://t.co/xU1IYbW66f
A1) I'd say just be open to the idea of new things and a willingness to be flexible in your classroom and school
A1 Treat the people that help you well. Be empathetic to the office workers, janitors and IT support.
I always had 2. One from my school and one online or somewhere different - perspective is key
Yes, I suppose that's true. Need to strike them up in conversation and see what happens!
A1: it's ok to feel like you're flying by the seat of your pants everyday...and it's ok to ask for help!
A1 Balance. School and Life. So important. Don't want to burn them out. Lots of support, get to know them
Listen to Ss. They will let you know whom they trust and admire!
A1: "When people are determined they can overcome anything" Mandela
A1: can't even imagine how different my life would have been if I had been on Twitter my first year teaching!
A1.Take chances,be open to new ideas, embrace change ,give your best and always teach from the heart and NOT from the book
it can be anyone who you respect as a colleague and trust
(A1) Be prepared and collaborate with others.
A1: You will have to change...don't get set in stone.

Gotta have heart, passion, YES!!!
: Greetings from San Diego. Sitting in a meeting for new teachers in my district.
Excellent advice esp the wrk/life balance and sleep esp the sleep
someone who has great educational practice and who is willing to help &share. Location isn't important
A1: Ss know if you are being sincere or not, build positive relationships
Gonna save this and pour over it later, thanks for sharing.
A1b: Keep a as you try new things. Fail forward. What you plant will grow. Find a way to make each S your fave!
Ask them what they want to learn
A1 Be the best that you can be & don't stress that your best isn't good enough for some
I tell my Ss we need to stop and "reboot"!
. I'm still learning that. Instead of being the T that will do it
A1: Find a mentor willing to invest in you. if not in your school building then somewhere close. Dont be afraid to ask
I was a football coach for 1 week. Premature child and never went back! It's okay! https://t.co/giZx0RuDm7
A1 Know that it's okay to say "no." You can't do everything, but you can do your important things really well.
aw shucks. We're all in this together! Enthusiasm &fresh perspective coupled w experience is powerful
A1:Been reading a lot of articles about Question number 2 and I have to admit, its scaring me as well. How do we address this?
A1:Never quit on a kid. We're called to serve every single one. If you try 100 strategies to no avail, move on to number 101😊
Its a good phrase. I caution though: practice what we preach!
A2 lack time to access support and mentorship
A2: Unsupportive Administrators!!
Dealing with administration different from they're own personal beliefs 'cause it makes a tough workplace to be in
a1 start a professional blog if u hvnt already - grow your PLN wish I had had one way back then
A1 ask kids what they like to do and use it in your class
A2: Negative talk can scare anybody away. Surround yourself with folks that raise you up and keep it positive!
A2: Lack of support, confidence, collaboration
A2 lack of support from admin, too much paperwork, unhealthy rel with peers are just a few
A2 negative media coverage and so much to do - have to learn to focus on in your class - not out. Remember why we are there
A2: Lack of agency pushes away teachers at all levels
A2 Poss failure & mayb overload. Like trying to eat a elephant or build a plane..in mid air. Lots of support, balance, Guiness
A2 - what scares them (or should) is teaching to the tests and the amount of testing our young learners are subjected to
A2 Either the amount of preparation or misbehaved students. Also, lack of support/resources from admin.
A2 For me, it is pressure. Pressure comes from many places. Perhaps much comes from me, but we are dealing with kids' lives!!
A2: Pay rate and work hours. I wish the career here was more realistic with renumeration
A2: Being a preservice teacher, I am afraid of having no support from other faculty and admin.
A1: Keep a smile file in your desk or classroom. On rough days you can go back to it, smile, and remember why you teach!
A2) state testing :-/
Not being able to help the students who need it due to federal red tape
A2) Dealing with administration different from they're own personal beliefs 'cause it makes a tough workplace to be in
A2: increased admin/paperwork tasks!
A2 - possibly feeling lack of support from on high and feeling out of their depth with the sheer scale of it.
more experienced teachers negativity or fixed mindset scares new teachers
A2 A lack of a support system, mentors and weak leadership
A2: Lack of mentoring and leadership.
I think it is important to know what kind of learners you have
A2: Many struggles w/ things that AREN'T teaching. That + low pay/benefits makes for a lot of pressure on young teachers.
A2:It's sad to say but income. We all know we don't do it for the money, but feeding a family can be a struggle on Ts salary😞
A1 join Twitter and learn something new
A2 If schools are like vocational training in AU - drowning in administrivia!
A2: for me personally, the transition and being multiple people at once/workload. Im still trying to find my feet.
A2: I'm really not sure. Fear of failure is probably a biggie? It's impossible to do this work perfectly!
A2 - lack of support trying to do everything themselves - lack of a good mentor
A2a) Lack of support/guidance, feel overwhelmed & unappreciated/valued, poor leadership
A2: State mandated testing.
YES! The feeling that they're in a "gotcha" situation where someone's just waiting to catch them messing up.
A2: bureaucracy. exists in all industries. have to be able to empower and support Ts with skills and be stronger advocates
That is my fear as I enter into the classroom!
Indeed, pressure & ss are at the heart of everything. Got to dev tools to deal with pressure
I will add to Nathan, stick with Twitter and enjoy the ride for an extended time.
A2.Workload ,accountability, lack of empathy ,lack of leadership and poor PAY
.A2All the admin"paper work".Am I good enough?Such a time consuming job wkends/evenings bt the most worthwhile job in the world
The pace this one is going is enough to scare even the most ardent twitter-er
Tough classroom environment and perceived lack of support.
During my preservice I had to sit at a table for the "not teachers" in the lunch room at one school. I get this.
A2 Public opinion doesn't help: "Oh but look at all those holidays you get"
A2 could be the structures of a career but in Germany u dont have too many options anyway
Hi, Anna here, in and out today.
Have your students help you set up the classroom
A2b) Have good intentions but are beaten down, must LOVE teaching/learning all of it...the good, bad and the ugly parts too
A2 Yes, or lack of parent support https://t.co/Ao2GTKCxxr
A2: Being a preservice teacher, I am afraid of having no support from other faculty and admin.
Yup, the job was hard but the second and third jobs on nights and weekends drag a body down! https://t.co/pKVJ7JVtrY
A2:It's sad to say but income. We all know we don't do it for the money, but feeding a family can be a struggle on Ts salary😞
A2: I worry about being able to help every student effectively and leaving a good impact on their lives and school experience.
A2: the trial and error of classroom mgmt.No one gets it right their first couple of years & it can be overwhelming at times.
thanks for following Charlie
A2 Paperwork! Too much time spent on accred admin that could be spent on more important things like thinking about the Ss
About to be driving I'll check back in soon! 💗
A2: balancing classroom management ss engagement pedagogy as well as lack of school structures to support teacher induction
David Bowie , , Prince , , The 1d ,
Catherine from Kingston, Canada jumping in for a bit!
Thanks mm,/ncvbnb Thanks Tobie
So true. Pressure can be tough. Often makes me feel as though perfection is a necessity, yet not realistic.
A2) having the responsibility of a child and also the common core standards can be pretty hard to deal with
A2 high expectations but insufficient support. Not tolerating failure. Colleagues who don't show reality just highlight reel
A2: Also...SUPPORT. ALL teachers need support systems, especially beginning teachers!
Wow, that's definitely isolating!
여기가 강남풀싸롱01021543560 강남야구장 강남풀싸롱
Thanks Craig! Happy to be here :)
A2: Complete and utter feelings of expectation and overwhelmingness (new word, haha) without adequate support mechanisms.
A2; The workload. New Ts are sometimes shocked by the work and stress. Burnout may be something else https://t.co/AmvSZiVcpX
yes! But make sure it's a good one - seen some burnouts try to disillusion newbies 😑
So cool to see you here Anna
A2: new Ts challenged by, concerned abt, societal perceptions of teachers & education; undue emphasis on extrinsic motivators
I made it through, but it made me feel very lonely and sad at the time.
A2 A disconnect between what they think teaching is, and the lived experience of their day to day
A2: Teachers love what they do & invest time in their job leaving little time for themselves, family & friends!Manage time well
5 years before I stopped screwing up my entire year in the first month of Ss interactions! https://t.co/fsI6Wnf48X
A2: the trial and error of classroom mgmt.No one gets it right their first couple of years & it can be overwhelming at times.
Excuse my ignorance from NZ but what is preservice?
A2 Personally I get frustrated when I can't find ways to help my students succeed! Few Ss practive Eng outside class...
(A2) I agree with . This changes everything for 1st yr teachers. https://t.co/h2bnsSqjFI
A2: Lack of mentoring and leadership.
What was it like when you actually started teaching?
A2: Workload. High expectations. Collaborate with your team. And be kind to yourself
A2 Many feel overwhelmed. As teachers we have many roles, counselor, nurse, parent, friend etc.
Kingston! A lovely little city!
I think that parents can scare teachers away
Q3 coming up in 1 minute ………..
A2: it sincerely takes time to develop time management
.So true Stress is such a big factor for many Ts.Its hard to take a step back sometimes& breathe.Gd advice on yr blog
A2 not having friends that will let you sit outside their house during a Twitter chat
That's definitely tough! We do what we can at school, but what is reinforced at home is so important!
I wanted to quit for the first 3 wks, but we were in MX, so my hubby patiently waited for me to like it, and I did.
A huge thing is the circumstances from home of students... I worked in amazing places but a bit rough...
Many colleagues will have your back if you listen Teaching alongside peeps makes you friends for life
Yes it is! Are you familiar with it?
A2 Discovering that you work a lot more hours than you get paid
Thought I'd sneak a Twitter chat in before heading into work to redesign my classroom.
Most of my students are adults...it's in their control!
A3. Schedule time when you can and let them come into your lessons when they can.
A3 Simple. Make time. Relationships count. Schedule it in.
thanks mate / it's always a busy time! Have 2 devices going st once haha
A2.As an experienced grey haired leader I learn much from new teachers .They have vision and enthusiasm to take schools ahead
A3 I still feel like a new teacher! There is so much to learn and such a big gap between what I'm doing and what I want to do!
six for me, then I left teaching for a short time to coach college soccer! I'm back and still working on it!
A3: so many ways schools can be very creative settings up a beginning teacher network is one
Both interesting and sad that the same sentiments are felt by new teachers in so many places. https://t.co/EZYNprM44i
A2: Complete and utter feelings of expectation and overwhelmingness (new word, haha) without adequate support mechanisms.
A3 share share share - ideas, lessons, email updates, but also pop in - hey I heard a great lesson as I was walking by...
Ah, then this must be doubly frustrating!
A3: Chat informally, staff get togethers, drop by and say hello - ask questions and don't be a stranger
Literally laughing out loud 😂
A3: setting aside time to listen and meet
A3 set meeting dates in advance stick to them and most importantly be "present" in the meetings
A3: sharing instructional materials
A3: Check in. It doesn't have to be formal or fancy. Just offer a hand and encourage questions.
A1) Don't be afraid to bring new ideas and ways of doing things to the table. Fresh eyes! https://t.co/U42kyBEo1s
Q1) What is the best piece of advice that you would give to any Early Career or beginning teacher? https://t.co/02DAR55jZJ
I agree about mentoring, makes a world of difference
I hope that when I get a job, I will have someone like you to listen!
Classroom practice before certification. It's called preservice (USA) or a practicum (Canada).
True. I see it everyday. Can be heartbraking at times.
yes! A3 Make it a point to check in & see how you can help
A3: Door is always open, willing to share resources & collaborate. Most important: Let new teachers know you WANT to help.
A3 invite into your room. Have them drop in! Drop in their room ( with perm). Content is easy part https://t.co/zWlYc6D0bp
A3 My time management philosophy. Always keep some time to support others, especially friends.
I just reinvented myself after 15 years of teaching - loving it! Always more to learn
A3: mentorship, feedback, opportunities for reflection, mentor leaders too---new folks need support in more than content know.
Yes! I find that even if NTs don't use it, it's comforting for them to know that they have support.
.A3.Always make time.Tell them if they want anything just ask& check in, in case they are too hesitant to.Impt to support new T
A2: I was almost scared away by lack of support from admin.
A3 make time. Share resources&ideas. Listen. Provide perspective&assurance. We are all still learning. They need to know that
A3: As an administrator, I try to put Ss & Ts needs ahead of most other duties..
Love it! How did you reinvent yourself?
A2: having to take on the role of parent/mentor right away 4 many Ss...they don't teach us that in teacher prep programs!
A3: You support a new teacher with an "open door" policy mentality. Drop what you are doing and help. Servant leadership.
is now trending in USA, ranking 24
beginning teacher network can be facilitated to address the unique needs of the teachers
A3: having conversations about "building stuff" (request for a day off, mailboxes, copiers, etc.)
A3 Be an ear, share resources, stay positive, get in each other's rooms!
A3) Well, I'm a talker...surprised? talking, asking Qs, how they're doing, etc. I'm a "sharer" too, got goodies for them 😊
You right, sometimes you wanna peace out, but stick around for informal exchange it may be worth it
A3 Make yourself available to them in times of peril and uncertainty
A3: Create a mentoring program - pair them up with the most positive person in your school
A3 Invite them to lunch in the teacher's lounge. It's a small gesture but allows them to join in the community.
A3: Sometimes new (and vet) teachers don't know what they don't know yet. Try and remember your challenges and offer advice.
I've got a great science tribe, and that's how we roll, but expanding the tribe is the thing now...
You rock! I love my PLN - so inspiring - we have people here today from 8 countries and counting!!!
A3 extend help during vacant times as well as let them join you in school wellness programs
A2 testing always testing
& Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone
A3: Checking in with them, drop a note of encouragement on their desk or inbox, offer lesson ideas or to collaborate.
(A3) Absolutely. Sharing is key. I always feel like a better educator w/fellow T support. https://t.co/qWnRYLgK4P
A3 share share share - ideas, lessons, email updates, but also pop in - hey I heard a great lesson as I was walking by...
You're so kind! Thank you! :)
A3: iThink just having someone that shows that they are intrested and care about how my experience is going who will check in
a3- being that supportive T that lets them know it's ok to fail. Not all your ideas will work and it is alright. We all do it
A3 Find the best match for them on staff to use the skills of all to help the school community. Time to answer Qs and support
A3: Build relationships with them.
A3 Provide time to interact with experienced teachers and mentors. Conversations that are filled with compassion help.
. A3a. You can learn from new Ts too. Get them involved , accept new ideas & try together. Buddy classes at times.
it's def important to checkin, often they don't even know what & when to ask 🙌🏻😉🙃
A2 Many feel overwhelmed. As teachers we have many roles, counselor, nurse, parent, friend etc. | MORE: https://t.co/P2EcQgoCpe
Ah ok - yes we call it Practicum too. Haven't got to that point yet. Am loving all advice on here
gave myself permission to bring in my passions (comics, Star Wars, hip hop), to let go of the reigns as well
A3: Be human. Be real and kind. First year of teaching would've been so different had I not had an amazing mentor turn friend
A3: Support new teachers by checking in and simply listening.
A3 Regular short catch ups, schedule short training sessions with them, lots of informal water cooler chats, introduce to Tw
A1. Love your students. Make each day count in your class. Be relevant. High, attainable expectations.
A3 being approachable, observant & communicating the struggle is real for us all, specific structures needed from leadership
A3: Support them in whatever they lack, encourage them, Model good practices for them
This is so important! Ts have diff skill sets and strengths and really blossom when they feel "in their zone"
A1) Quality mentor, effective PLC team, & adminstrator who takes time to observe and give constructive feedback!
A3 I sometimes get random notes from colleagues. Leaving those for a new teacher lets them know they are not alone!
Hopefully a team of positive people, team mentoring, great variety of perspectives
A3) Possibly a lack of self-confidence. We're sure it can be scary and overwhelming! Persevere! https://t.co/hidQPsohxY
They keep getting better and better 😂😂
Listening does wonders! We don't always need to solve their problems. They just need someone to LISTEN!
A3.Make them feel welcome.Talk to them and support their efforts. That was me a long time ago,That is my two daughters today
A3: Check on them, over & over again, in person, by email, a text. Let them know you're here 4 them & glad they're here!
A3) Quality mentor, effective PLC team, & adminstrator who takes time to observe and give constructive feedback!
A3 They're always happy when I share materials w/ them, its always good to share the good stuff
I used this line on my students and they nodded in agreement, "Oh yeah, we don't know it all!" Good stuff!
Yes and is an international city, plenty of foreigners! Yet perhaps it's cultural?
schools that have a collaborative culture support all teachers
Shame you are not closer then Spiri - I would love to learn from you!
new Ts need to feel safe in their teaching environment ... Free to spread their wings and fly
A2 Understanding all the different learning styles and behaviors can be overwhelming
A2 The amount of work is scary. Teaching consumes you the entire school year. But the rewards are AWESOME.
A3) Whether you are co-worker, spouse, friend, etc. just be there to let them talk about their day. https://t.co/WTXhc5nsLZ
Of course! We're off to a great start! Dark chocolate, coffee and a road trip to TCT conference in NJ!
A3: I also extend the welcome to pre-service teachers and make sure that feel welcome! Paying it forward!
It sure is! (Also, I love Barcelona! We were just there in October!)
experienced teachers should be positive influences
It is imp for all staff to know they are also resp for T dev just like every child is everyone's resp
A3: Kicked myself for sucking at this last year. This year: regular F2F check ins, listening ear, offering help/ideas.
Hi friends. Carol ELA consultant from Long Island is here to chat.
A3 Be a connector - link them with others who can support/help in ways you can't. Listen & validate their ideas & feelings.
A3: One of my all time fave principals would always drop in each Fri afternoon how Ts r feeling, no agenda, just care
. Or aren't sure if you mean it. Show an interest, mentor if they want you to but don't force
Was there a star wars memo I failed to receive?
Totally! Because new teachers are not the only ones who need to be supported!
A3 Share "hidden rules" of your building such as never bring your papers 2 grade 2 faculty meeting 😜 https://t.co/8gdX5esM7D
A3: Build relationships with them.
Q4 coming up in 1 minute ………..
A3 Its important to make yourself available. Offer to help even if they don't ask. Make them feel welcomed.
haha little bit warmer than that here mate
Had the same experience thanks to 😘 https://t.co/dPfeGV94Zx
A3: Be human. Be real and kind. First year of teaching would've been so different had I not had an amazing mentor turn friend
. There has been a suggestion that too much of this stifles new T autonomy and creativity. Thoughts?
Need more leaders like that!
We communicate our care when we give time and attention, the opposite when we r too busy too talk
Exactly Nathan! Always fall back on humor.
Yes. Every year of my life for nine years now...
or out to real lunch on those teacher workdays ... Don't leave them alone ...
Our provinces NTIP program in every school board and school supports new teachers with mentoring, PL days, etc.
yes! Introduce them to others in your building with similar interests
A3: Create a mentoring program - pair them up with the most positive person in your school | MORE: https://t.co/P2EcQgoCpe
Persevere is good advice. Seek a mentor. Stay . 1st year is an adjustment. A3
A4: A mentor should be a model, one you can go to and feel comfortable and safe. Help: advice, support Hinder: lean too much
Perhaps offering it and not forcing it. And then being open to receiving their input too
Of course! We're off to a great start! Dark chocolate, coffee YUMMMM 😊
thanks for following Michelle
Why I moved here! Yet still locals need to realize that English opens up so many opportunities!
It sure is, but I guess amplified when a green teacher and unfamiliar with expectations.
Hahaha! Great "hidden rule"
A4: Help - the right advice can be priceless and allow someone to swim instead of sink
I think collaboration is a great way to establish and maintain relationships! My dept does it all the time.
That fella is one of a kind, but point is, sweat the small stuff, pay attention
A3 As principal, make great connections with new staff so you can check they r ok. Keep the workload in perspective.
A4: A mentor listens and guides new Ts when they need help. But it may not give them a chance to solve problems independently.
Try not to feel that way. Folks are busy, however Ts are the most generous professionals around. We ❤️ helping!!
A3 New teachers need support daily. Listening ears help.
A4: sometimes a mentor can stifle the individuality of the newbie unknowingly. It's good to establish good working relationship
positivity is key ... Negativity needs to be flushed away ... New Ts don't need to be filled in with the gossip
A4 Encourage. And ask those questions that will lead to more effective teaching and learning.
A4: as teachers we do like to talk so maybe being an ative real listener before advice and coaching
A4 A mentor teacher guides, supports, listens, and encourages others.
A4: Hinder - if the mentor is a strong personality that can have too much influence on a new teacher
provide guidance at & outside of school.
A4 can keep that passion for teaching burning!
A3 just talk - find time in the staffroom, smile, ask how they are, listen
Yeah, it's in the delivery isn't it?
Thinking maybe this is what it'll feel like til the end of my career? =P
Q4 To be honest, I've only ever had a business mentor. I'd say teachers should develop their own style + have a good
.I had an excellent mentor too.He encouraged supported and guided. So I'm not scared to try new things
hi Valerie - great to have you here
A1 Always look for the best in every student and you will get the best
Mentor teachers are guides, listeners, givers of advice & support. Helpful when they are positive & offer advice. A4
A4) A good mentor should guide and answer questions but allow you to find your own style of teaching. https://t.co/5PDdU8vWI9
A4: Teacher/mentors are like fairy godparents. They have eyes everywhere and know just what to say/do/help with.
A4: Mentor teachers listen, provide support and asks questions
A4. Guide on the side - should show new T that it's a reciprocal relationship- we have much to gain from them also
always be an ear, check in frequently and keep them away from negative people who can steal their enthusiasm!
The concern is less with T-T during the year and more with new T arriving, we have so much stuff!
I find that NTIP isn't implemented with the same effectiveness province-wide, though
A3 I like to introduce myself and let them know I am there to help ...
A4: Be available. Everyone's as busy as each other. Check in. Relationships are two way streets.
. Yes! That can be so hard as a new teacher. You're often feeling bit anxious already, don't want to add to that.
A4 If a mentor hinders they are the wrong person. Find them another mentor!
A4) Mentor Ts should listen, encourage, support, guide, assist, help Ts reflect & give meaningful, honest feedback
A4: A mentor shines light on the things a new T doesn't know they don't know. Things others only learn through error.
Nailed it on the head ! https://t.co/BLeIOERqfM
positivity is key ... Negativity needs to be flushed away ... New Ts don't need to be filled in with the gossip
as a mentor don't be afraid to ask some hard questions with support
Loving today's chat - be sure to connect and follow all of the amazing educators here today!
As long as we are lifelong learners and never settle I suspect you are correct! Never a dull moment though!
A4: If "hindering" is in question when paring a new teacher with a mentor, drop the mentor.
A4: A mentor teacher should run along beside instead of take control of the wheel for the newbie.
Turn every mistake into a lesson well learned
Perhaps it's accurate to say the more you learn, the more you realize you don't know!
A mentor needs to use a coaching model. Being a know all stifles discussion, risk taking & results in immediate disengagement
as a new T it is hard to invite yourself to lunch with an established group
A4: Mentors guide...listen...collaborate...be positive...help offer suggestions but not solve every problem.
A4: support them but not speak for them on their behalf
Gossip is disruptive. Positivity looks at the bright spots of each day not the negatives.
Q4 Listen, paraphrase, question, listen again....give advice only when asked or ask for permission to give it
glad we found it! Great questions so far. We are teachers, but are enjoying participating.
A4: If "hindering" is in question when pairing a new teacher with a mentor, drop the mentor.
A4 Just like the Ss mentors need to enc Ts to try new things &find what works for them in safe env. Be available for debriefs
A4: I notice that you asked us about mentor teachers. Can you say more about that? I wonder what other Qs you have?
A4: Mentor teachers guide, support & seek answers to questions. Helps knowing you have someone to count on. Shouldn't hinder. #
A4 Listen, paraphrase, question, listen again....give advice only when asked or ask for permission to give it
A4 Mentor tchrs shld listen, support, hold up mirror, not "tell", encourage tchrs 2 uncover own strengths, challenges, strats
Check out my answer. How did I do? ;D
you bet! Not nec. all the way I'd write it out, but just shared with me at a meeting yesterday ;)
.Just answered Q4 without seeing the ? I believe a mentor needs 2 encourage let you take risks, support
A4: Sometimes mentors will be too mothering, not want their T to try out of the box/norm things Mentors should let them go
How are people paired up as mentor/mentee in your experience?
. It is, I think I may have sat in my room by myself the first day.
Agreed finding the right mentor is a bit like dating. The core values should be in sync
I'm glad to hear the mentor program is alive and well. A4
A4: mentors and coaches work shoulder to shoulder in the classroom with their teachers
A4 putting to much pressure on the new T or givestandard advices and let him/her try out more
A4) I prefer the word <===> <===> as s(he) can become MORE personal for showing a way and somebody ;)
Don't be afraid to look outside of bldg for mentor. I was only band/music T in district. Was lucky to find one in our road rep
A4: I think successful mentors understand the need for new teacher exploration and error while keeping perspective on growth.
Mentoring ... I like to ask what their vision is ... Then I try to help them get there
Building and subject if possible. Ex. special ed-special ed.
Open up communication with parents ASAP tell them something good about their child as often as possible
A4 As an old grey haired experienced leader I praise and enhance good work.I model areas that need attending.Teachers love it
Yup. Thats why we stick to asking good questions and listening
Q5 coming up in 1 minute ………..
A4 an ear to listen but can be bias
mentors offer suggestions/strategies in classroom management and pedagogy... And show them how to unjam the copier😝
Risk-taking is a positive move when you have someone who will guide you. A4
Finding the right mentor with similar values can be tricky, but worth it! https://t.co/4TfcjxKvo6
A4 If a mentor hinders they are the wrong person. Find them another mentor!
My mentor many years ago is the reason I stayed in education and pursued leadership. Also the reason I gave them up. All good.
is also a fabulous resource for educators
Q5) How important is the relationship established between a mentor and mentee? What does it look like? https://t.co/tLRCmemDOe
A4:Ts should model vulnerability and humility, so they don't intimidate new Ts. Awe can be unhealthy. https://t.co/VlmRQi90wH
and pushing school/district mandates are not an effective way either ... Individualized help
. This is so true. It's nice to have support so you can find your voice as a new T. That trusted colleague.
u must make mentoring new teachers a priority- a big rock
Praise validates others' work-fills them w/ sense of pride. Glad to hear you encourage your Ts and model 4 them. A4
Got to jet ✌🏻️ off to take kiddos to tumbling, till next time 😊
I think also recognizing that mentor/mentee relationships are fluid. Some are lifelong, others aren't
A4: My mentor is across the country now.We are still in contact & she got me on twitter!
Twitter and subtlety like oil and water. We got gifs though! :-)
A4: As an ELA T I received a math T as my mentor. Thought it was strange but ended up being perfect! https://t.co/vXN2qKboVh
Must drive before the rain sets in (a car load of school ware to deliver). Thanks for the chat.
Have to empower each other.
A5: It should be almost as close as a friendship, but supportive like siblings, with a touch of padiwan and master jedi.
A5 Trust, understanding, communication, useful feedback, patience
A5: Very important - the mentor needs to be a positive person, positivity is contagious! A smile goes a long way
A5: It's very important. Trust is the key cause otherwise its not beneficial!
nothing more deflating than hearing everyone go off to lunch ... without an invite ... Insert "L" on forehead
A5: Relationships are instrumental! Be honest, open, transparent, genuine, considerate, helpful, & an intentional listener.
A4. Mentor Ts can help w/support and navigating the school. It's nice to have a go to person. Free of judgement towards new T.
A5 Starts w/mentee being dependent. Mentor helps mvmt to independence. Result is interdependence. Both learn from other
A5: trust, respect, professional, confidential
A5: It's the most important thing. It looks open, caring, kind, and mutually agreeable, w/ flattened hierarchy (aka none).
A5: Relationship is of utmost importance. Trusting, inspiring, encouraging, available, respectful.
A5 it has to be a realtionship of trust and open-mindedness
Relationships are everything. You cannot mentor without developing a positive, respectful & genuine relationship.
A5: Mentor/Mentee relationship should be positive, honest, risk-free....
Alright, - I must go! Good chatting as always :D
A5: relationship is a loaded word. Yes mentor/mentee relationships are crucial, but each pairing will look different.
.A5 Impt Keep professional but friendly.U can lrn so much from them too.Be there after too.I helped get my last St T a grt job
A5 a good relationship makes all the positive difference a poor one should be identified and changed as early as possible
A5 mentor/mentee open relationship, willingness 2 learn on both sides, encouraging, smiley, real interest in each other as people
Thanks, Nathan! I didn't think it would be lost on everyone. Statistics tell me so! :)
A4: know thy impact! Meet the needs of the other ts where they are, help define their professional goals, listen empathically.
A5 got to show u value their ideas as well - not just about what we bring to the relationship
I love GIFs long time! :D
Love the padiwan/master jedi analogy!
thanks for following Shanna
A5: Positive relationships build trust, support & resilience. Crucial for teaching & life
A5 Build a relationship of trust, collaboration, and positivity. Work as a team.
A5: The relationship only works if both are bought into the same moral purpose: doing right by kids! https://t.co/aHtx8QH7lo
A5) ONLY will bring <=> <=> and NOT being prepared 4 the , excuse-me please ;)
Yes, free of judgment allows for confidence, risk taking, and freedom to ask questions!

Q5) How important is the relationship established between a mentor and mentee? What does it look like? https://t.co/tLRCmemDOe
A5) We think the best mentor/mentee relationship would be mutual respect and beneficial to both. https://t.co/1LDFkgUz13

PREPARE yourself for the final question! I cant believe the chat is nearly over
A5 Need to negotiate desired outcomes and expectations first. Trust, trust, trust.
A5 Find relationship that fits even if you need to seek alternate/informal mentor.
A5 Connect with those things that make us all human. We all have hopes, fears and desires.
it's all about the relationship! Trusting that you have their best interest at heart is key.

The mentee invests trust in the mentor to take him or her through the ed. gauntlet, believes mentor knows best.
A4: My mentor is across the country now.We are still in contact & she got me on twitter! | MORE: https://t.co/BE71XDf4Ft
Thanks Craig for a great international engagement. Its almost 1 am here in Ireland. We learn so much from eachother
A5 I think it's important that the mentor/new teacher relationship be authentic. When forced, if you don't click it's harder.

A6 build relationships, smile more, think about how you want to be remembered by your students
thanks Hannah - was a pleasure to connect with you tonight! Stay in touch
A6: A complete do-over? I might tell myself not to stay in one place for too long. A rolling stone gathers no moss.
Jumping in late. I would tell my 1st yr self to find my own groove. Spent 2many yrs trying to follow. https://t.co/AXUmWM9H6g
A6 The kids will not necessarily remember the problems we worked. They will remember how they FELT when we were together.
A6 That really shouldn't be published but... how did those kids learn to read? (Whole language days)
A6: Reflect, practice, reflect, practice, forgive quickly, reflect, practice, play, and get more sleep.
A6: you can't fix everything. But you can try.

A6 Teaching takes many forms. Good teaching takes time. Don't be so hard on yourself.
A6 Ask for help. Don't try to do it all in one year. And most importantly, give myself a pep talk, "Relax. You're doing good."
Agree negativity is also contagious. We must avoid negativity among us. Too much from outside the profession.
A6 Build and use a quality to accelerate your progress
thanks mate - great to see you here
A6 "Glad you spent time getting to know your students. That really made a difference."

A5: It is huge but not vital. You might learn more from others than your assigned person. Strong communication is key always
every new teacher should get that book too!
TY Another great chat. Glad to be able to join in today. Lots of great people to learn from and connect
