Hello #MEMSPAChat - I'm Rich Bacolor, science consultant for Wayne County RESA and your guest moderator for the evening. Please introduce yourself and tell us about your school. @MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat = STARTING NOW! Come join the collaboration of leading and learning!
Mike Domagalski - Checking into #MEMSPAchat tonight as a participant. Excited for @richbacolor to lead the way about NGSS
Checking in: Mindy McGinn, principal of Voyager Elementary School in Howell, Michigan. I work with some of the most dedicated faculty and staff around. #MEMSPAchat
Hello @richbacolor Craig McCalla from Dexter, MI. Principal of Cornerstone Elementary a Young five through second grade building. Hello Everyone!
#MEMSPAchat
It's a whole new level of learning...T's are excited about it too - and that type of thinking and learning applies to other content as well. Connections by staff is inspiring #memspachat
A1: The new standards cross all domains of science, are interdisciplinary, and connected to "real" life application. The former standards isolated standards into subject areas. #memspachat
Hate to rock the boat (😉) but I’ve stopped saying Inquiry because there are so many definitions — everyone describes something different. It’s tough to know if you’re all talking about the same thing. #MEMSPAchat

Q2: What do you consider the biggest challenges in supporting teachers to make these shifts? Professional Development, Curriculum Resources,
Assessment or Other Demands on Time and Resources #MEMSPAchat
A2: One Professional Development that really helps teachers see the shifts is the @ngsxproject brought to the Mitten by MDE and @MiMathScience#MEMSPAChat
A2: Yes, Yes, and .... Yes! Tough all the way around. Must have great PD, then understanding and willingness to let go, then collaboration time, then look at resources. It's more about the instruction, evidence, and collaboration than materials. #MEMSPAchat
Q2: What do you consider the biggest challenges in supporting teachers to make these shifts? Professional Development, Curriculum Resources,
Assessment or Other Demands on Time and Resources #MEMSPAchat
Q2: What do you consider the biggest challenges in supporting teachers to make these shifts? Professional Development, Curriculum Resources,
Assessment or Other Demands on Time and Resources #MEMSPAchat
A2: A - Professional Development. Ts have to feel confident in understanding and letting go so they learn how to let Ss lead. Then look at time/resources, curriculum... #memspachat
Q2: What do you consider the biggest challenges in supporting teachers to make these shifts? Professional Development, Curriculum Resources,
Assessment or Other Demands on Time and Resources #MEMSPAchat
A2: Helping teachers make the shift. Time needed to teach 3D means learning to integrate subjects in order to have time to facilitates dimensions. #MEMSPAchat
A2: Process, inquiry, thinking, and speaking...a mindset shift in many ways. For Ts, available PD, collaboration time, support with materials, and a culture to support the trying/failing/success of new things.
#memspachat
Q2: What do you consider the biggest challenges in supporting teachers to make these shifts? Professional Development, Curriculum Resources,
Assessment or Other Demands on Time and Resources #MEMSPAchat
A2: Our ISD has implemented amazing PD for all staff - we have committed to sending all staff - because the learning applies to all content areas - It is the pedagogy of great teaching #MEMSPAchat
A2: All. I believe few people will argue w/ the better ways of doing science being necessary. It think the how, 'new ideas' of authentic phenomenon being presented, support for the 'messy' learning that will take place as well as how this can be assessed statewide #MEMSPAchat
A2 I have to choose? I actually thing B and C in my world. Curriculum and Assessment haven't caught up with standards yet, but there are a few out there. I can imagine D is a huge issue in elementary. #memspachat
A2: Our ISD has implemented amazing PD for all staff - we have committed to sending all staff - because the learning applies to all content areas - It is the pedagogy of great teaching #MEMSPAchat
A3: We have given our teachers PD in several models that can help with teaching NGSS or MSS. Front-loading them with instructional methods of collaboration and investigation instead of reviewing curriculum materials. #MEMSPAchat
Lot's of collaboration / support with my teachers, support teacher leaders (the pioneers), leadership from Ts and @scottpanozzo , communication with Curr. Director, and connection with ISD specialist. Truly a collective effort. #memspachat
Our ISD has had nearly 20 cohorts including 5 full days of PD for teachers. Nearly all teachers have come back ready to apply their learning to all content areas. The main focus was always on the process of student learning #MEMSPAchat
A3: When we focus on what observation models really intend to do v. compliance we can have real conversations w/ Ts that get us to leading learning w/ them so they are confident to let Ss voice lead. #MEMSPAChat
A3: Most Danielson "highly effective' wording stresses students leading the learning vs. the teacher leading. Doing NGSS well lets Ss build knowledge collaboratively which will support 'highly effective' teacher goals. #MEMSPAchat
Ts need to see how they can incorporate their reading and writing instruction into the science. There will be so many opportunities to combine learning to make it more authentic. #memspachat
Q3: Howell uses 5D+. The correlations/connections are clear. Quality of questioning, student talk, meaning making, discipline specific instruction... I could go on and on. #MEMSPAchat
Q4: Across the curriculum, students are being asked to do more higher order thinking. How can we help teachers and students make meaningful connections among math, literacy, and science? #MEMSPAchat
Having students lead science learning is a terrifying and huge shift for many teachers. We were so used to being sage on the stage. #honesty#memspachat
Subs can be tough to find, but SI and DI plans can aid with the funds for them at least, or summer cohorts are happening too. I have one in June. #MEMSPAchat
In reply to
@MrDomagalski, @tlyman1976, @richbacolor
A4: We need to get our staff into the best classrooms, where student voice is the key to learning. It looks different in those classrooms, and often it looks scary too. But the learning is the difference between good and great...See it, learn it and live it #MEMSPAchat
A4 Here is one way we did it for ou EL students --> Math + Sci + Presentation skills + real life problem they solved! --> https://t.co/bwXIBdsw3F#MEMSPAchat
A4: You have to make it real for them and give them a chance to lead their learning. What change or positive impact can this learning have? We have to not think in curricular silos. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Culture -- we have to model, remind, recognize, challenge, and support connections, thinking, literacy on a daily basis in our building with all teachers. #peerobservations#notinisolation#memspachat
Q4: Across the curriculum, students are being asked to do more higher order thinking. How can we help teachers and students make meaningful connections among math, literacy, and science? #MEMSPAchat
A4: Ask questions w/out 1 correct answer. Allow Ss to ask more ? as they move through the discover process. Include research, writing, thinking, doing. #memspachat
Q4: Across the curriculum, students are being asked to do more higher order thinking. How can we help teachers and students make meaningful connections among math, literacy, and science? #MEMSPAchat
A4: Going back to T observation, higher order questioning is a very important element of the classroom. As many subjects that we can connect, the better for the Ss we teach! #MEMSPAchat
A4: Once again, through thoughtful and purposeful PD. Bring in consultants and experts to model the way for teachers, go slow, and expect to see these instructional changes in the classroom #MEMSPAchat
A4: Project Based Learning is key to bringing the core subjects together. Meaningful projects will enhance learning and bring teachers and students together. #memspachat
A4: Once again, through thoughtful and purposeful PD. Bring in consultants and experts to model the way for teachers, go slow, and expect to see these instructional changes in the classroom #MEMSPAchat
Q5: The Michigan Science Standards include both Science & Engineering components. How has your school integrated STEM programs into the curriculum? #MEMSPAchat
A4: Rigor, relevance & relationships. If those three things can be integrated into what kids are learning, engagement will increase & the learning will become more meaningful. #MEMSPAchat
You guys. Betty is on to something huge here. We have to help teachers use student questions to drive instruction. And THAT is aligned to the new standards.
#MEMSPAchat
A5: PLTW has really helped to move us, STEM is integrated. We also use STEM boxes - open and independent for Ss to discover. Genius Hour/Flex Fridays/Wonders. #memspachat
Q5: The Michigan Science Standards include both Science & Engineering components. How has your school integrated STEM programs into the curriculum? #MEMSPAchat
And connect teachers to see models. Nothing better than teacher-teacher peer observations to see how it’s done. I love the open door movement. #memspachat
A4: Once again, through thoughtful and purposeful PD. Bring in consultants and experts to model the way for teachers, go slow, and expect to see these instructional changes in the classroom #MEMSPAchat
I agree. However, resources don't often support full integration. This requires time and skill. How do we support that, especially in 3D standards in sci and 2D standards in math? No silver bullet. Feedback welcome. #MEMSPAchat
A4: You have to make it real for them and give them a chance to lead their learning. What change or positive impact can this learning have? We have to not think in curricular silos. #MEMSPAchat
Q6: Finding and evaluating curricular materials aligned to the new standards is a challenge. What’s been your process or experience so far? #MEMSPAchat
A5: Van Buren Schools are excited about our first STEAM showcase on Saturday, February 3 to demonstrate the things our students K-12 have done related to STEAM. #MEMSPAchat
A6: PLTW mets many of the standards but we also have teams of Ts who are creating, compiling and organization resources & materials to provide opportunities for our Ss. Some of the best science instruction we've seen in a long time! #MEMSPAchat
Q6: Finding and evaluating curricular materials aligned to the new standards is a challenge. What’s been your process or experience so far? #MEMSPAchat
A5: We have PLTW, shipwreck alley class at the HS, CTE course that integrates geometry and construction, robotics, science Olympiad and working to bring more STEM opportunities next year. #memspachat
A5: As we roll out STEM or STEAM opportunities, I often think of equity. It's a great movement, but I wonder how we able to engage ALL students in it, or only ones that can "get there". Something to ponder. #memspachat
#memspachat A6: I've definitely figured out you really have to spend time as Learners of 3D instruction and the Framework before you can even begin a review
A6 Proceeding with great caution. Focusing first on shifts in instructional pedagogy (via talk moves and claims/evidence) before advocating implementation of any specific curriculum materials. Science consultants have recommended some units for teachers. #MEMSPAchat
A6: With minimal options out there, we are piloting curriculum before making our final choice. The pilot also serves as PD for teachers as they are immersed in the NGSS on a daily basis. #memspachat
A6: Have a district that is going to unpack a few standards associated with a lesson and then use the Achieve Lesson Screener to see how 3D lesson is. https://t.co/8MJUjZdYQz#memspachat
#memspachat A6: I've definitely figured out you really have to spend time as Learners of 3D instruction and the Framework before you can even begin a review
Q7: Ensuring all students have opportunity to learn science is critical. Share a challenge and success from your building’s work around equity in science. #MEMSPAchat
A7: I am sooo curious how K-3 gets their science "in" beyond reading nonfiction text. Please share. Any schedules or time frames appreciated! #memspachat
Q7: Ensuring all students have opportunity to learn science is critical. Share a challenge and success from your building’s work around equity in science. #MEMSPAchat
A7: All students have equal access to curriculum. PLTW is all done in the classroom. Challenge: Not all of our students have equal access to technology. #MEMSPAchat
We're very fortunate to have both an elementary and secondary science consultant for our county. They are really working to support teachers in shifting instruction. It is the "right" work, but not a fast process by any means. :) #memspachat
A7: Challenge - State mandates that demand time upon time upon time devoted to reading intervention which can pull "at-risk" readers out of class during other content. Success - all Ss engaged in PLTW (adjust intervention so all are included) #memspachat
Q7: Ensuring all students have opportunity to learn science is critical. Share a challenge and success from your building’s work around equity in science. #MEMSPAchat
A7 Proud of our equitable science experiences in Kdg and 3rd grade (where we have started roll out) - disappointed our 1st/2nd/4th graders are still waiting #MEMSPAchat
A7: As building leaders we have to make sure science has a place in the daily/weekly schedule. Many of our Ts will create blocks of science learning during a month. #memspachat
A7: Challenge—holding staff accountable for keeping students in science instruction rather than pulling from science to provide support services. Kids love this stuff! Why take them out of an area where they can have success? Push in! #MEMSPAchat
This is from Jaqueline Barber’s work from Lawrence Hall of Science. Can we use some reading block time to address how scientists might read? Driven by phenomenon and student Qs? #memspachat
Q8: #MEMSPAchat Homework: Look at the implementation indicators listed below. Where are you making progress? Where do you still need support? https://t.co/UIlxndMADr
A7: Almost any subject can & should be connected to science, because science is not only how we live, but why we live and what seals our fate. #Memspachat
All students can use science as a jumping off point into other content success if we use practices, crosscutting concepts, engineering, and disciplinary core ideas. I really believe that. #memspachat
A7: Challenge—holding staff accountable for keeping students in science instruction rather than pulling from science to provide support services. Kids love this stuff! Why take them out of an area where they can have success? Push in! #MEMSPAchat
A7- this literally isn’t rocket science. So much of our world can be observed w the naked eye. Let’s kids explore a problem. Discuss their thinking. Journal about it. Explore. How many strands did I just hit? #memspachat
Q8: #MEMSPAchat Homework: Look at the implementation indicators listed below. Where are you making progress? Where do you still need support? https://t.co/UIlxndMADr
A8: I think that we are making progress with implementation in that we are talking at grade level meetings how we are implementing. Support: I need more information as the building leader on how I can support Ts in this work #MEMSPAchat
Asking questions is a science practice. So is analyzing and interpreting data (observations). Argumentation and discussion. Communicating science information. You got it, sir. #memspachat
Really grateful for the opportunity to learn with you tonight #MEMSPAChat Thank you all. Shameless plug - it would be great to see you & your teachers at @MSTAMich in March. #MSTA18https://t.co/ADnuERcu9h
