Hate to rock the boat (😉) but I’ve stopped saying Inquiry because there are so many definitions — everyone describes something different. It’s tough to know if you’re all talking about the same thing. #MEMSPAchat

  • richbacolor Jan 25 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2: One Professional Development that really helps teachers see the shifts is the @ngsxproject brought to the Mitten by MDE and @MiMathScience #MEMSPAChat
  • MrDomagalski - Moderator Jan 25 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2: Yes, Yes, and .... Yes! Tough all the way around. Must have great PD, then understanding and willingness to let go, then collaboration time, then look at resources. It's more about the instruction, evidence, and collaboration than materials. #MEMSPAchat
    • MEMSPAchat Jan 25 @ 8:14 PM EST

  • HarvestLearning Jan 25 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: A - Professional Development. Ts have to feel confident in understanding and letting go so they learn how to let Ss lead. Then look at time/resources, curriculum... #memspachat
    • MEMSPAchat Jan 25 @ 8:14 PM EST
Q2: What do you consider the biggest challenges in supporting teachers to make these shifts? Professional Development, Curriculum Resources, Assessment or Other Demands on Time and Resources #MEMSPAchat
  • HERprincipal Jan 25 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: All of the above. Ts need time to develop the curriculum and then assess properly and aligned with how they are now teaching! #MEMSPAchat
  • HowellMcGinn Jan 25 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: Helping teachers make the shift. Time needed to teach 3D means learning to integrate subjects in order to have time to facilitates dimensions. #MEMSPAchat
  • richbacolor Jan 25 @ 8:17 PM EST
I like your thinking Tim. #memspachat
    In reply to @tlyman1976, @HarvestLearning, @BuckmasterKelly
  • dougammeraal Jan 25 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: Process, inquiry, thinking, and speaking...a mindset shift in many ways. For Ts, available PD, collaboration time, support with materials, and a culture to support the trying/failing/success of new things. #memspachat

Q3 up in one minute. Keep up the collaboration! #MEMSPAchat
  • CraigMcCalla24 Jan 25 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: Professional Development is going to be the key. Helping Ts see the path to use it interdisciplinary. It will be a shift in thinking. #MEMSPAchat
  • mcculloughmg Jan 25 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: All. I believe few people will argue w/ the better ways of doing science being necessary. It think the how, 'new ideas' of authentic phenomenon being presented, support for the 'messy' learning that will take place as well as how this can be assessed statewide #MEMSPAchat
  • VogelWendi Jan 25 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2 I have to choose? I actually thing B and C in my world. Curriculum and Assessment haven't caught up with standards yet, but there are a few out there. I can imagine D is a huge issue in elementary. #memspachat
  • BuckmasterKelly Jan 25 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: support ts as they take risks and experiment with their practice in supporting students in such a different way #MEMSPAchat
  • richbacolor Jan 25 @ 8:19 PM EST

  • MEMSPAchat Jan 25 @ 8:20 PM EST
Q3: In what ways does your district’s teacher observation model support these shifts? #MEMSPAchat
  • PaulLiabenow Jan 25 @ 8:20 PM EST
    It’s going to be great! @MEMSPA #MEMSPAChat
  • richbacolor Jan 25 @ 8:20 PM EST
Can you give us a couple examples of PD that did that for you? Shout out to the ISDs! #geln #memspachat
    In reply to @tlyman1976
  • VogelWendi Jan 25 @ 8:20 PM EST
This is a HUGE committment, but I've seen other districts do this too. The pay offs are worth it. Kuddos and thank you! #MEMSPAchat

A2: Our ISD has implemented amazing PD for all staff - we have committed to sending all staff - because the learning applies to all content areas - It is the pedagogy of great teaching #MEMSPAchat
  • richbacolor Jan 25 @ 8:21 PM EST
Can you say more about this interdisciplinary part? So many times we hear “I can’t teach science.” OR “I’m not a reading teacher.” #memspachat
    In reply to @CraigMcCalla24
  • MrDomagalski - Moderator Jan 25 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: We have given our teachers PD in several models that can help with teaching NGSS or MSS. Front-loading them with instructional methods of collaboration and investigation instead of reviewing curriculum materials. #MEMSPAchat
  • dougammeraal Jan 25 @ 8:22 PM EST
Lot's of collaboration / support with my teachers, support teacher leaders (the pioneers), leadership from Ts and @scottpanozzo , communication with Curr. Director, and connection with ISD specialist. Truly a collective effort. #memspachat
    In reply to @richbacolor, @scottpanozzo
  • tlyman1976 Jan 25 @ 8:22 PM EST
Our ISD has had nearly 20 cohorts including 5 full days of PD for teachers. Nearly all teachers have come back ready to apply their learning to all content areas. The main focus was always on the process of student learning #MEMSPAchat
    In reply to @richbacolor
  • richbacolor Jan 25 @ 8:22 PM EST
How did you get a gif of me from today so quickly? #memspachat
    In reply to @mcculloughmg
  • HarvestLearning Jan 25 @ 8:22 PM EST
A3: When we focus on what observation models really intend to do v. compliance we can have real conversations w/ Ts that get us to leading learning w/ them so they are confident to let Ss voice lead. #MEMSPAChat
    • MEMSPAchat Jan 25 @ 8:20 PM EST
Q3: In what ways does your district’s teacher observation model support these shifts? #MEMSPAchat
  • richbacolor Jan 25 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3: Here's my take on the Danielson Model and NGSS. Would love your feedback. #MEMSPAchat https://t.co/07byLlDTK8
  • mcculloughmg Jan 25 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3: Most Danielson "highly effective' wording stresses students leading the learning vs. the teacher leading. Doing NGSS well lets Ss build knowledge collaboratively which will support 'highly effective' teacher goals. #MEMSPAchat
  • MrsKatieLee Jan 25 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2: Curriculum resources are minimal for NGSS. We have had a few days of awesome PD from science consultants from around the State #memspachat
  • VogelWendi Jan 25 @ 8:23 PM EST
This also key. Risk taking will need to happen and Ts will need support in doing this. Somethings will fail, some will be amazing! #memspachat
    • BuckmasterKelly Jan 25 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: support ts as they take risks and experiment with their practice in supporting students in such a different way #MEMSPAchat
  • CraigMcCalla24 Jan 25 @ 8:23 PM EST
Ts need to see how they can incorporate their reading and writing instruction into the science. There will be so many opportunities to combine learning to make it more authentic. #memspachat
  • richbacolor Jan 25 @ 8:24 PM EST
Subs is an issue all over the Mitten. Are there other PD opportunities or structures you’d like to see that are sub-less solutions? #memspachat
    • MrDomagalski - Moderator Jan 25 @ 8:22 PM EST
Your district has no issue providing subs for all these days?
      In reply to @tlyman1976, @richbacolor
  • HowellMcGinn Jan 25 @ 8:24 PM EST
Q3: Howell uses 5D+. The correlations/connections are clear. Quality of questioning, student talk, meaning making, discipline specific instruction... I could go on and on. #MEMSPAchat
  • VogelWendi Jan 25 @ 8:24 PM EST
Yes! I think it will be when Ts have a resources and the PD to take off with it. I'm aleady seeing some great things. #MEMSPAchat

A3: Observation models in the distinguished areas truly distinguished Ss and teaching; including NGSS standards. #memspachat
  • CraigMcCalla24 Jan 25 @ 8:26 PM EST
A3: We are looking for more student lead learning and inquiry. The highly effective part of our observation model supports this. #memspachat

A4: We need to get our staff into the best classrooms, where student voice is the key to learning. It looks different in those classrooms, and often it looks scary too. But the learning is the difference between good and great...See it, learn it and live it #MEMSPAchat
  • mcculloughmg Jan 25 @ 8:29 PM EST
