Hello #bookcamppd and #TeachPos. I have been looking forward to this chat all week. My name is Tika, and I currently serve 26 amazing 2nd graders and fabulous teachers in Las Vegas.
Good evening y’all. Elyse In North Texas & Social Emotional T. We’re supposed to get a blast tomorrow and the lows will be in the teens some of the week. That’s cold for us. #Teachpos#BookCampPD

Q1. "No one can stack the deck against a smile, passion, enthusiasm and desire. No district superintendent or school admin. is going to say you can't do those four things."
YOUR CLASSROOM IS YOUR STAGE - HOW ARE YOU GOING TO USE IT?
#BookCampPD#TeachPos
#teachpos#bookcampPD - BTW - It was in the 40s in RI today.
I lived in Chicago for 10 years, and I have never regretted the move. Much warmer by the coast!
A1: Start by learning who your students are and placing them at the center of the work that you do: their interests, their questions, their curiosity, their needs. Building rigour is much easier than developing engagement and community. #BookCampPD#teachPOS
A1: One thing I like about teaching and being a student, is that in every class you get to reset, reflect, and reinvent who you want to be. #WildCard alludes to Didion: “We are the stories we tell ourselves.” I aspire to improve. #BookCampPD#teachPOS
Our classroom and schools are what we make of them! If we want them to be places where real learning happens let’s make sure we are leading by example and enjoying what we are doing! A smile, and a good morning go a long way! #bookcampPD#teachpos
A1: The new intervention I've started w/2nd grade gives me an hour as a classroom T. I have 5 rotations at 10min a piece with 2 min brainbreak/transitions between each rotation. We start rotations for real tomorrow. Looking forward to it all coming together. #teachpos#bookcampPD
A1: I use my "stage" to empower the next generation to believe that their voice matters now, at age 12 instead of 21, and to encourage those that cannot see the great qualities they already possess.
A1 - I try each day to help students love our stage and show. While things can always be better, we try to focus on each child’s desire to feel happy, safe as welcome in class. #BookCampPD#teachpos
A1: One challenge of teaching for me is creating a classroom (the feeling, the lessons, the assignments) where curriculum expectations connect to texts which connect to students. It’s a challenge that I love to face and overcome with creative solutions. #BookCampPD#teachPOS
A1 Know your students, cultivate that JOY in learning and celebrate learning every day. Your students will remember the experiences you create! #teachpos#BookCampPD
A1: I have never felt constrained by expectations or rules by my board, my administration, my curriculum, or my colleagues. The classroom is an opportunity to express one’s self (for the teacher and students): experiment, fail, reflect, revise. #BookCampPD#teachPOS
#teachpos#bookcampPD - A1 - I have access to over 40 K-8 classrooms between 3 schools. now There is so much opportunity to show off the great learning going on in these rooms by some amazing educators. I get to be creative in how I support them. That is my stage.
A1: Actually, my classroom is my students' stage; I'm just the director. Once the "play" is chosen, it's all about preparing for the final performance (in front of an authentic audience, of course!). #BookCampPD#TeachPos
A1: I'm going to use it to build safe/genuine relationships, to foster Ss' curiosity/wonder, & to encourage authentic skill development for my Ss academically/socially/emotionally. #bookcampPD#teachpos
A1: YES!!! Our classroom is OUR stage which means is a comfortable and judge-free place where we can take risks and develop to our full potential.
We laugh.
We cry.
We talk.
We fail.
We succeed.
That’s what our stage is!
#bookcamppd
I know it sounds crazy. This group of 25 littles are very busy. I think they are going to enjoy their time. Our learning and practice last week went well. Maybe this is why I'm not a gen ed teacher. #bookcampPD#TeachPos
Q2. "If you want to create magic, you must NEVER settle for "good enough," because that's what your students will become."
HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN CLEAR & CONSISTENT EXPECTATIONS ON DAYS YOU'RE ROCKING YOUR TEACHER ROLE AS WELL AS ON THE DAYS YOU'RE STRUGGLING?
#BookCampPD#TeachPos
That sounds like an awesome opportunity to experience learning in a different way. Lots to share and lots to learn from in that role. #bookcamppd#teachPOS
I love teaching in an environment that allows for expression and exploration of the practice without feeling stymied by other adults.
My mind spins that the thought of tiny snippets from all of those classrooms being shared on Twitter for all to learn from. Marvelous! #BookCampPD and #TeachPos
Very cool. When they get to make decisions on that stage and for that show it must lead to increased engagement and student empowerment in their own learning. #bookcamppd#teachPOS
I try my best to share on twitter as much as possible the great stuff going on in our district. Check out my feed during the week! #teachpos#bookcampPD
A2: Our students need consistency. I try to be consistent with our process and if I’m changing anything, I involve students in the process.
Having their input sets the bar high
#bookcamppd
A2 - This is all about loving your job and realizing the importance of bringing our best each day. Kids will always know you care when you’re consistently about being a difference maker. #teachpos#BookCampPD
A2: Every once and awhile, you gotta pause and hit reset. As leaders, we need to model reflective practices, and be willing to refocus vision for those in our care. Sometimes, it involves calling people to a higher standard. #teachpos#bookcamppd
A2: Coming in I set expectations - they are posted on an anchor chart. We review daily, if expectations are met we try again. I laugh at my mistakes, and giggle along w/ my littles when they are silly. We are a family & learning to be together for the hour. #TeachPos#bookcampPD
Absolutely. And that is the gift we need to give our students in their learning. #bookcamppd#teachPOS The ability to inquire and explore what fascinates them and use that to demonstrate connections to curriculum expectations.
A2: Expectations are set from those first days of school. Build relationships and challenge your students early! Show them that your expectation is that we are in this together, we work hard and aren’t afraid to try new things! #bookcampPD#teachpos
A2 We live and breathe by our pledge and cheer. We hold each other accountable. My Believers understand the importance of owning their education and their behavior. It is not always pretty, but it is always worth it 😊. #BookCampPD#TeachPos
A2: Part of teaching (to me) is establishing patterns and frameworks that are recognizable to students in terms of what happens in the class and being flexible with individual lessons. With enough experience you start to trust your instincts. #BookCampPD
A2: I think the "clear and consistent expectations" become more evident on the days when I'm struggling. My students get to see that I make mistakes, too. Then they get to see how I respond to that by modeling how to try again to meet those expectations. #BookCampPD#TeachPos
Q3. Set up a camera in the back of your room & record a few lessons. Play them back, ask yourself, would I like to be in this class day in/out?
IF YOU DID A VIDEO OF ONE OF YOUR LESSONS, WHAT POSITIVE THINGS WOULD PEOPLE SAY?
#BookCampPD#TeachPos
A2: #WildCard refers to Confucius: “By 3 methods may we learn wisdom: 1st, by reflection, which is noblest; 2nd by imitation, which is easiest; and 3rd, by experience, which is the bitterest.” Imitate, then iterate. Serve kids in the moment; reflect after. #BookCampPD#teachPOS
A2 Keep the expectations high and the engagement higher. We all have our days but it’s vital students know the routine to be able to support others when you’re not there or it’s not the best day. #teachpos#BookCampPD
A3: He's authentic. He's approachable. He's on their level. He's personal and personable. He's transparent. He's honest. He loves his students as much as he loves his own kids. #teachpos#bookcamppd

#BookCampPD#TeachPos
I think that is a good thing that they get to see when we make mistakes. We should almost highlight and discuss it with them to encourage them to do the same thing with their own learning and performance tasks. #bookcamppd#teachPOS
#teachpos#bookcampPD - A2 - Luckily, every day is different, This week I literally went from PLCs at the middle school to teaching 1st grade how to use @STMath. If I am struggling with something, I can have time to reflect before making decisions.
A3: I flip a switch as I enter my class. Time is not wasted. I’m mobile. I interact with each student. I listen and respond. I explain and question. I support and enjoy my moments with each child. I give feedback and appreciate their victories. #BookCampPD#teachPOS
A3: The teacher has a clear plan and time is efficiently used. He loves his subject (English) and invests himself in preparing for each lesson. He enjoys interacting with his students and he has high expectations for everyone in the class, including himself. #BookCampPD#teachPOS
A3: I hope people would say I notice errors and work to acknowledge and fix right away, I smile and laugh right along with my students. We are moving and working the whole time. #TeachPos#bookcampPD
A3: Recording yourself during lessons is something powerful i learned from the awesome author and FRIEND @MsSalvac
It’s definitely a great resource to see how we’re doing and what can be done better for students and the profession #Boostingachievement#bookcamppd
A3- I hope they would say that we are supporting one another, asking lots of questions and that there is a joyful undertone to most of what we do #teachpos#BookCampPD
A3 I constantly redirect and praise per my current administrators. It gets me through the tough times and difficult moments. Praise all day long and trend the positive. #teachpos#BookCampPD

A3 - If nothing else, I think people would say:
1. He is crazy
2. He loves the content
3. He loves kids
4. Totally about Health and Wellness
5. Smiles and greets kids.
6. Probably talks too much😏 #teachpos#BookCampPD
Those are big. Great modelling for the kids, great for establishing relationships with the kids that can be leveraged when having high expectations for their performance and success. #teachPOS#bookcamppd

#teachpos#bookcampPD - A3 - I think people would be positive about my classroom management. I worked hard to get good at it, and continued to maintain high expectations of behavior in my classroom.

IF YOU DID A VIDEO OF ONE OF YOUR LESSONS, WHAT POSITIVE THINGS WOULD PEOPLE SAY?
#BookCampPD#TeachPos
I totally agree. I am not a big fan of giving students big chunks of time as work periods. So much more we can do together in the short time that we have. #bookcamppd#teachPOS
Q4. I check in with myself to make sure my WHY is about my students and their futures. I'm especially motivated by research that shows literacy is the key to breaking a cycle of poverty."
WHAT IS YOUR WHY?
#BookCampPD#TeachPos
A3 We laugh, we agree, we are not afraid to respectfully disagree 😊, we encourage each other, and we love to play games as we learn. #BookCampPD#TeachPos

#BookCampPD#TeachPos
A3: The teacher is positive, enthusiastic, and passionate. The students are interested and engaged in the learning. The learning is student-centered, fun, & relevant. #BookCampPD#TeachPos
Michael, all of that shines through with your tweets and the way you express yoursself. It is obvious that you love your students as much as you love your own chlidren. Keep on rockin' it my friend. #teachpos#bookcampPD
A3: He's authentic. He's approachable. He's on their level. He's personal and personable. He's transparent. He's honest. He loves his students as much as he loves his own kids. #teachpos#bookcamppd

WHAT IS YOUR WHY?
#BookCampPD#TeachPos
Successes need to be visible, they need to be on the wall, they need to be curated (typically online, for example in a website) and we need to feed off each other's successes. It shows what is possible and we compete together instead of against one another. #teachPOS#bookcamppd
A4 My why is for my students in front of me to see themselves succeed in different aspects of their lives. Their needs, their academics, & their emotional bank all need to have cultivated positives daily. #teachpos#BookCampPD
A4: My why is uplifting kids. I am so lucky to have had teachers who cared about me and lifted me up. I am where I am because of them. I teach so I can do the same for my students. We do this because we love and believe in kids! #bookcampPD#teachpos
A4: To gently guide Ss in my room to become better readers, writers, thinkers, speakers, and people and to help them realize how much innate power they have inside themselves already. #teachpos#bookcamppd
A4: My overall why is helping someone else. I enjoy that. More specifically, I want to help people learn. I really enjoy the process if the learner initiates it and I can help. I also like to learn from students and colleagues to go the journey with them. #BookCampPD#teachPOS
A4: Literacy is foundational to being successful and that includes reading and writing (as well as talking and thinking). As educators we must make daily time for our students to exercise these skills sacred. #BookCampPD#engchat#literacy#teachPOS
:) Thank you, Steph. You got to experience some of that first hand last summer in Denver. Such a wonderful treat! Grateful for the opportunity to chat with you IRL. #teachpos#bookcampPD
My why is:
1. Health is all about feeling better each day.
2. Kids always need a person they can count on.
3. Helping to make a positive change helps shape our world.
4. Teaching is awesome!
#TeachPos#BookCampPD
Q4. I check in with myself to make sure my WHY is about my students and their futures. I'm especially motivated by research that shows literacy is the key to breaking a cycle of poverty."
WHAT IS YOUR WHY?
#BookCampPD#TeachPos
A4: Teaching English and English Language Arts is about communicating successfully (receiving and transmitting information). The text, the learning task, the unit, and the theme all serve that overall purpose. #BookCampPD#engchat#literacy#teachPOS
Some are greeted as they come in. Some participate in the whole class discussion. Some come to me for help and some I go to. We have independent reading in class where we do conferences. We have writing time when I am mobile. Getting to everyone is not easy. #bookcamppd#teachpos
A4: I desire my Ss to have a better experience than I did growing up. I see so many young versions of myself, so each day is an opportunity to change the course of someone who is walking the way was. So many Ss with potential...gotta help them reach it.
A2: The routines and structure of my ELA classes stays the same but the activities and lessons are different. This ensures that if I’m out or not on my game, a student could basically take over and direct the class that day #teachpos#BookCampPD
