Good morning. Josh McLaughlin, Arlington Public Schools
A1: Collaboration, Connecting- takes all forms with focus on Ss learning!
Happy New Year. Executive Director Ohio Leadership Institute Columbus.
A1 I think the best PD is introduced and then supported consistently I also think some of the best PD comes from Ts teaching Ts
A1 PD or professional learning means developing my capacities so I can better support Ss It centers on reflection & conversation
A1 PD or professional learning means developing my capacities so I can better support Ss It centers on reflection & conversation
A1: PD should be the opportunity to expand my learning in ways that will be valid and beneficial to my students.
A1:If its Personalized PD I get to grow in the areas that I Need,if it our school's PD its what the district needs
Can we talk about professional learning instead? PD sounds a bit like a one time event that done to you.
A1: Prof Dev to me: That which helps me or my teachers move in the direction they/we decided to go, for the benefit of students.
Great response. Hit key point!
https://t.co/w9ehV96tiv
A1: PD is learning more about what I love to do...making me a better educator serving Ss & Ts
Good Morning! Kathy from CT
Happy Saturday friends! I'm Allison - Academic Tech Coordinator in ATL. I develelop PD 4 Ts - ready to hear some new PD ideas!
A1: It means a chance to learn and grow in my field (education).
A1. Prof Dev = a pre-planned learning experience that develops my abilities as a teacher directly or tangentially.
...and expand the traditional PLN to a real network of experts from anywhere - face-to-face and virtual.
A1: PD needs to be differentiated and include coaching---90%+ effective over the 10% effects of "drive-by" PD
A1: PD is constant self-improvement. It should be focused, constant and benefit the teacher and students.
To me, PD is a learning opportunity. The quality and applicability of that opportunity, however, can be questionable.
Professional development is useful and meaningful. Helps me to develop and grow as an educator.
Hello. Rich Novack. English T and teacher activist in CT.
A1 Time to grow & learn as an educator as well as meet requ certification needs. Should be differentiated to meet everyone's needs
A1) PD is a time for growth, reflection, relaxation, empowering my staff, sharing, and ready to experiment.
A1: PD means exposure, familiarizing, collaborating, swimming deeper, immersion & partial or whole adoption into one's own pedagogy
Hi Good Morning! Spiri from PA. G&T
A1) PD means collaboration, sharing new ideas and reflection. No matter the topic--engage me!
Well said! Love the personalized PD that is Twitter!
PD is growing as a T, learning from others, and discovering new strategies all in the name of helping Ss
A1:PD to me is a chance to learn, grow, & share in meaningful ways. I am a PD junkie - live new & innovative ideas!
A1: an opportunity to develop my craft to another level. The challenge is to keep learning.
A1: PD means always learning, always growing, always improving, PD means getting excited about what I am passionate about!
Good evening team & friends Andrea, Sydney
A1. The best is , professional development that is designed for .
Welcome back! Always good to have you join us.
RT Q1 of https://t.co/9ljrtyAdli
Q1: We often don't get asked this so...
What does professional development mean to you?
. A1. The opportunity to fine tune myself everyday.
Good Morning Urbie. and Thanks again for your support of
A1 To me PD challenges me to stay informed, try new things, big picture - learn & question
A1 we should always be learning and growing as people. PD is how we learn and grow as professionals
A1: PD means info/training that is needed to improve your craft as a teacher and life long learner.
A1: Meaningful learning for teachers. Lots of ways to do it
I agree - PL is about learning; PD tends to be externally mandated hours of scattergun 'development'.
Experimenting is a huge part of this! Always be willing to try and share! https://t.co/sYOq7nlMvb
A1) PD is a time for growth, reflection, relaxation, empowering my staff, sharing, and ready to experiment.
A1: More I think about it more my answer evolves. Believe PD needs to make us better educators so we can help students learn better
A1 PD means learning and practicing something that stretches my thinking whether I am on the delivery or the receiving end
Professional learning has to be related to your "class", whether that's students, teachers or principals. What do they need?
A1 PD is the way we get better as educators. Learning and getting better with one another. https://t.co/8WP71PRvAl
Q1: We often don't get asked this so...
What does professional development mean to you?
Staying Informed & finding way to 'keep up’ is an important component!
A1:Reality-Many organizations continue to use traditional-sit&get method, instead of personalized opportunities
That sounds like a perfect PD session to me. I love when I'm asked how I can be supported/what I need. https://t.co/rhfGLW7G9n
A1: Autonomy to explore/research anything at anytime through SM. Rely on PLN, Ts & . No excuses-find a way
A1. Good PD keeps me energized and loving my job. Twitter is the best pd ever.
Good Morning everyone. Lisa here- Personal Finance Teacher in Maryland & PD Director for Take Charge Today out of Univ of Arizona
Good morning from the Badger State, John Gunnell, middle school Principal from Baraboo, WI
A1 Still not a fan of PD - Wish we called it Professional Learning Development is done to people + learning focuses on the learning
A1. This means, among other things, the PDL includes participant voice in planning, is varied in medium, and includes follow-up.
A1) PD is learning by example, connection with new content & colleagues, continuing conversations beyond school walls & days.
Staying Informed & finding way to 'keep up’ is an important component!
I like that you included the focus should be "in the name of helping Ss" this can often be overlooked https://t.co/TEOc8nlIux
PD is growing as a T, learning from others, and discovering new strategies all in the name of helping Ss
A1: Professional development is an opportunity to grow and strengthen skills - most powerful when part of an individualized plan
A1) Prof. learning is developing a continuous improvement culture continually.
A1: PD provides us with the tools to do our job at the highest level possible. It should be individualized and meaningful
Heyooooo our moderator from Australia!!!
Welcome to and glad to have you here
Yes. We have moved some to call it PL not PD in my district.
A1: Professional development is empowerment of Ts to empower their Ss.
Good morning ! Joining late...lurking and learning this morning! Laura, from Michigan
Look at you up at it early! Good for you. Hope all is well.
Mornin'. April in MD - teacher librarian :)
A1:PD is about growth and learning more today than you knew yesterday and reinforcing what u may already know. Should be energizing
The term I use is . Separate the PD from that designed for true learning.
Good point! https://t.co/Eil6OjB3AM
A1 Still not a fan of PD - Wish we called it Professional Learning Development is done to people + learning focuses on the learning
A1: PD should change the way I think or open my eyes to new resources, strategies, and ideas. PD can come in so many forms.
. Reflection is absolutely essential to learning.
Yes, LEARNING is exciting and fun... it always is. so PD must foremost be about LEARNING!
Good morning Laura! Hope all's well!
#2 I'm thinking a lot about PD in terms of special education. How do you make a new teacher a great special ed teacher? Thoughts?
A1 PD = Giving/Making Choices in learning
A1 PD is about coming to know what I don't know I don't know.
A1: For real? "Better charge my phone, Kindle, Mac." lol. I'm giving my 1st PD; I want boredom universally changed:)
was thinking too about certification needs, interesting profession we are in
A1: PD should focus on not only the achievement gap, but also on the opportunity gap
. do you think really good PD, motivational PD makes you want to be a life long learner?
Excited that the new delivery of PD is personalized & constant and not one size fits all. Still, it comes down to each T to use it.
Love the focus on ongoing support=critical & often lacking/ Change is often hard so support after PD is key to success
Good Morning. Joining late, Corey from RI, MS Technology Coach.
A1: Quality PD forces me to grow and think about my craft, my instruction, my classroom, and my own knowledge in a different way
A1: when I am responsible for PD I want teacher choice to be the main factor
A1: Professional development is rooted in the growth mindset & a commitment to working towards one's potential & lifelong learning
A1: PD is a time for me to learn, grow and equip myself with tools to help others. It is also my professional responsibility.
A1: PD means an opportunity to learn from others. Sometimes at conferences I skip the sessions to learn from my PLN.
A1) PD should inspire, motivate and provide opportunities to connect and reflect; peers leading peers is best
Good morning 😀 Joan-EdTech Dir from not so sunny FL
A1 developing of new ideas
Good morning Amy! I hope all is well with you too!
GM fr. Fl. Q1 PD means learning and growing in my practice.
A1 Let's make 2016 the year we shift our words, thinking & the PD-PL paradigm. "Learning" is everlasting. https://t.co/HtzUV1rUWD
Can we talk about professional learning instead? PD sounds a bit like a one time event that done to you.
A1: It's the old term for "professional learning." It's learning anywhere, anytime, 24/7, w/personalization front & center.
Q1 - PD, anything (formal or informal) that increases our knowledge base in our field
A1: At its best PD is the opportunity to learn together w colleagues in job embedded practice, to have deep discussions
Morning . A1: PD should be . Should be what the learner needs & WANTS. Starting to make that shift.
A1: When done right, opportunities for staff to learn & remain current in best practices, research & approaches. Essential.
#2 I'm also setting a goal to provide more pd for our teaching assistants? How to manage a class, how to teach effectively
A1: PD means opps for growth, networkimg, challenging myself and changing my practice. Good PD means doing this in a sustained way
A1: PD should be constant, collaborative, and personalized.
Good morning! Can't stay long...getting ready to head in to work.
Yes, the best PDL includes modeling by learning leader, and follow-up to exhibit how learning impacted practice.
A1: Professional development means that I have the freedom to make myself a better educator so I can impact the success of students
Yes! I would love to be given time to explore all the possibilities and what other Ts are doing. https://t.co/N4DJ6oxRpp
A1: PD should focus on not only the achievement gap, but also on the opportunity gap
Good pd should make you think. My makes me do that every day.
A1: PD is an opportunity to learn something to be a better educator. Thanks to tech, it does NOT need limited.
A1: PD to me means being able to explore passions & learn from others to be at the top of my game & support the profession.
A1 PD is exploring ideas that spark my curiosity & inspire ways to be innovative & grow. PD offers collaboration, connectivity.
PLearning is about whats best 2 kids. Take the adult all about me out of the picture. What is best 4 kids & adults make it happen
A1: I love PD that you can use immediately and that fits with your school's mission and goals (rather than the two contradicting)
A1: Highly effective PD for ANY profession is targeted to address a personal growth need. Otherwise it’s a waste of time & money.
I love the concept that this is a daily experience and not a few times per year
A1: Professional development is growth, it's owning your own łearning. It's about the relentless pursuit of better.
A1: PD is an opportunity to grow a stretch our skills, whether it's formal PD or learning something new in a Twitter chat.
What a wonderful welcome Scott Thanks :) https://t.co/pGyOJZjrlO
Heyooooo our moderator from Australia!!!
Welcome to and glad to have you here
A1. Professional learning. Learning things that will make you better at your job. I think we should keep it simple.
Absolutely! It's actually why I go to each year. A great way to restart your engine for the last stretch.
You just stated my idea of PD perfectly! https://t.co/gDemFXOfZd
A1: PD to me means being able to explore passions & learn from others to be at the top of my game & support the profession.
A1: lots of talk about PLN&SM but how can Ts do this if they are not allowed devices in schools,poor/no wifi? STARTS W/ Leadership
A1: .... and PD should inspire you to be better. Just getting info without inspiration is a waste.
A1: PD is for improvement in areas that are weak.Growth, change, knowledge, & building collaborative relationships within the field.
A1 part II Well ---- learning is also uncomfortable and hard sometimes too -- then it's fun and exciting
Right on point! https://t.co/QuQsvD016q
Morning . A1: PD should be . Should be what the learner needs & WANTS. Starting to make that shift.
It can be challenging w/more requirements being added, some must be on our own time but PD time could also help
A1 My idea of professional development evolved from hoping to learn 1 thing in school into searching out the PD I need for students!
I've started differentiating "professional development" from "professional development for learning."
A1: PD is a chance to learn and grow. Also, should be an opportunity to collaborate.
PD means meaningful, relevant, research-based, interactive! Not "sit and get" Q1
I like inclusion of practice. I think practicing in the company of others alleviates discomfort in trying new things
PD is not exposing teachers to a concept in a workshop, should be a change in teacher’s practice to increase student learning
There is so much talent around us. Teachers teaching teachers through , team mtgs, etc can be powerful PD
. interactive adult learning along multiple paths; builds & extends expertise throughout career
Great PD is job-embedded- it challenges our thinking and inspires best practice- and then it is integrated into practice!
A1: with Twitter, I no longer see PD as a couple of days each year. My chances to learn are now everyday.
A1 PD Means learning what I am interested in to make myself a better teacher and that will help my students succeed.
Prof. Development or Prof. Learning -- Some teachers at my school love it while others don't care at all.
PD! Professional and Personal Development! We have to move to becoming better teachers, learners and human beings! Loving!
Is there ever a space for "sit and git?" Can lecture-based PD ever work?
Done. Change the vocab in your circle of influence and people will get it.
A1: PD allows teachers a chance to grown their own human capital
The best PL I've done in the last few years is my PhD; it's been transformative.
Good point! Growth mindset is so important.
A1: it's also how we show we're authentic about our claim of "lifelong learner"
Hey friends -- first timer. Quinn, Salt Lake City, district social studies specialist. Looking for ways to improve PD. Bring it.
A1) PD should be based on the teacher's IEP. We all need Individualized Education Plans. One size never fits all 4 PD.
A1: PD means continuing to grow in your craft, personally and as a community. We can always improve! https://t.co/ZklFQBcPnm
A1: PD is for those that want to "get better" and "do better".
it's also about the Attitude Gap. Right mindsets can move the right way.
A1 PD is my opportunity to learn the things I want/need to continue to grow as an educator/leader/father/person.
.A1 ongoing self improvement, that allows me to do my job better
A1: Effective PD also means that it's not a one time event. It must include follow-up & implementation like https://t.co/IPxUnTrjH9
Change driven by the Ts personal desire to grow in a certain way. Self direction leads to great success
Morning, . KG in Boston. Gonna chat before I get an early morning haircut.
Good Morning! I'm jumping in a little late.
We learn best when our different "minds" are involved in the process. That means our "doing" mind too.
#1 I foolishly used the term PD with noneducators and they had no idea what the word meant. I was on an ed jargon binge
I agree it's all about growing to benefit our Ss
- better educator - I wish we could all see PD as helping us be better, that's the challenge
I agree. And if given the choice, the ones that don't care may do nothing. They can not handle individualized yet.
Absolutely correct. It is throughout our careers
YES, using this time for passion is great , too much spent on drudgery in a one size fits all https://t.co/FVS4GOLbGQ
A1: PD to me means being able to explore passions & learn from others to be at the top of my game & support the profession.
A1: PD=Educators using available resources to improve their craft and practice!
A1: I always say prof. learning is about "mixing brain cells" w/ those who know more than me..colleagues, authors, presenters, etc.
Agreed, a measure of good PD is how I feel when I leave.Inspired to try something new? Great. Overwhelmed? Not so great.
exactly! Autonomy is essential for PD to be relevant and meaningful!
Yes! Any HR will tell you that a workplace needs focus on team and personal growth
A1: Professional development is about being open to change. It's about considering other options to "the way we things around here"
I like that you mentioned job-embedded practice. Ongoing support is critical to sustaining new learning. https://t.co/RM0TX5GcKL
A1: At its best PD is the opportunity to learn together w colleagues in job embedded practice, to have deep discussions
Sometimes I think our greatest obstacle is between our ears. What's stopping us from exercising this freedom to learn?
or developing professionally is another term I've heard.
Couldn't agree more! I learn something new everyday! https://t.co/Ec7mdom3m7
A1: with Twitter, I no longer see PD as a couple of days each year. My chances to learn are now everyday.
Good morning! Robbie from Atlanta joining in
Hey Spiri. So, how can we move beyond exposure in a workshop to everlasting practice?
A1 I prefer Professional Learning over "PD" - the best = growth & opportunity for both faculty & Ss
We need to keep in mind that true learning is hard. Exciting, but hard, because it means a change in thinking and behaviour.
A1 PD is not an a event that happens a couple times a year. It is my ability to continually learn + grow to be better for my Ss/Ts
A1: My PD time is a time for me to grow as a learner, empathize w/ my Ss about the learning process & reflect upon my teaching.
A1: PD is NOT an overnight stay in a hotel, an opportunity to miss school, or a chance to shop half of the day.
May I also add that it is for affirmation and validation in areas that are strong. https://t.co/gxVAP7gXEv
A1: PD is for improvement in areas that are weak.Growth, change, knowledge, & building collaborative relationships within the field.
A1: love PD that isn't a short term fad, but valuable long term practices that staff follow through on/try/admin. check-back, etc
Good early morning Thoughts from Scott in Texas along with Rocky and Bullwinkle.
Yes old terms. Aren't "growth" "development" and "learning" the core of our profession? Is this redundant?
A1: PD must be relevant.
And it should be ongoing. No drive-through trainings please!
Welcome
We are on Q1 and going to Q2
Q1: What does professional development mean to you?
Thanks for joining!
Best approach to getting better? mentality. :) Welcome, Quinn.
A1) We need to get away from "prof dev"- people don't want to be developed. Needs to be "professional learning". Learning is key.
I hear ya. Sometimes I need to step away for a while because my head hurts.
just read study that over half of America's workforce thinks there is a skills gap- but it's other employees not them
love the word "immediately", PD's like that are the best
Q2: What types of professional development opportunities are you hoping to experience in 2016?
A1 PD Should also be passion based!
For sure! Excellent point of view.
I think personal growth can sometimes affect professional growth in a positive way, too.
Welcome Quinn to your first ! Great topic today! https://t.co/679kuGqOvh
Hey friends -- first timer. Quinn, Salt Lake City, district social studies specialist. Looking for ways to improve PD. Bring it.
Indeed! What YOU know YOU need to improve and grow. Simple, organic, effective.
Awesome! Personal development...I haven't thought of it that way but that's exactly what it should be. https://t.co/D94cDatwpE
PD! Professional and Personal Development! We have to move to becoming better teachers, learners and human beings! Loving!
Kevin from NW NJ 7th Grade History. A little late to the party. Good Morning
A1. PD currently means slogging thru. Should mean learning, sharing, showing off w peers.
Indeed. My brain separates "school PD" from the continual learning I do. Time to merge on the highway!!
Welcome thanks for joining. We are just starting Q2
A1: Every day in your classroom is PD if you are a reflective teacher. My students show me how to be a better teacher all the time.
I think so. Just please Lord not a PowerPoint presentation. Best lectures are fast paced (to me) and well prepared
PD isn't putting everyone in a room to learn the same thing at the same time. All learners, but not clones. https://t.co/7Px5KBmnGl
great point! Without continued scaffolded support for Ts, PD is just a waste of time
A1: I see many awesome responses. Bottom line "when you know better, you do better" - Maya Angelou
. . Agreed! Too often k-12 PD, when self selected, isn't as much about collective good, but individual enrichment $
A2: I want to learn more about increasing student leadership, especially for challenging kids. Got to finish reading too.
A2: I look for PD to help me gain understanding about the mindset of elem Ts and Ss. K-5 is new to me this year, looking to grow.
A2: I'm hoping to experience PD that allows me to collaborate and network with fellow educators.
A2 There is no hoping for PD. I learn from PLN thru voxer, blog posts, twitter, edcamps and more. PD is not a date on calendar.
A1) Professional learning is a continuous cycle of improvement to be better for kids tomorrow than today.
A1: focusing on growth in the profession to eventually help students & my own skill set. Individualized for each learner
So important. This is one of the areas where, as a whole, we still miss the mark. Need more long-term PDL.
A2: First, really looking forward to this
A2: I just attended some great PD hosted by my last week 👍
in a sustained way, really challenging yourself in your practice - I like this! Good morning btw :)
Man oh man. Where've ya been? Great crowd. Welcome to the learning party.
here we are, learning on a Saturday!
I believe that meaningful PD is about learning over time that is as closely connected to the desks and thinking of Ss as possible.
A1 for me PD should have two elements: teacher choice, something that's immediately implementable in the classroom.
A1 PD means allowing yourself to be not just a student--but a good, engaged, serious student. A student who won't quit. Ever.
A1. PD needs a vision - it should reflect the direction you are trying to go, and help you to fulfil the vision
Love the phrase "drive-by training" Might be borrowing that from you and yes, PD should be ongoing https://t.co/gHxiP6UK1c
A1: PD must be relevant.
And it should be ongoing. No drive-through trainings please!
More solutions than there are teachers. The next generation will need more than we do now.
A1. When orgs dedicate time for professional learning it proves that lifelong learning is valued and it's not just talk.
And another problem is that the ones that don't care, are the biggest distractions. It's a battle we will win though.
GM fr. Fl. A1 PD means learning and growing in my practice.
For me, I need time right after PD to plan and commit to trying this new idea or skill.
remember old saying - some work their first year and repeat it 30 times - I believe we are better today
2 kinds... targeted, embedded, & sustained and what we are doing here... seeking learning to change our actions.

Question 2
https://t.co/H4OHMvXnxJ
Q2: What types of professional development opportunities are you hoping to experience in 2016?
Very true! PD isn't just about the professional impacts. Thanks for this critical reminder, ! https://t.co/3fd2prpY7K
A1 PD is my opportunity to learn the things I want/need to continue to grow as an educator/leader/father/person.
. Congrats - hope there's lots of time for talk and thinking in small groups: 2 to 10 ratio of you and them talking.
Yes! The spark to change, try, and grow is important! Without it, no fire to develop...
I think so too. But, provide an introduction to learning via an Ignite ppt, and I'm likely hooked.
I've been going for years! It's amazing!
RT Q2 of https://t.co/Tqx3zYio6K
Q2: What types of professional development opportunities are you hoping to experience in 2016?
A1: PD is about growing my mindset, improving in areas where I may be weak, learning from others and developing a PLN.
Good morning, btw! Chris here from Ontario.
A2: second, more writing and blogging, I learn a lot this way - creating content
A2:I am hoping to grow my PLN and gain PD everytime I log in on Twitter, and see what these amazing educators are doing
a1:means I am working to help myself hone craft, explore new things, and revisiting what is am already doing with new perspective
A2: Looking forward to a variety of PD in 2016 including today and next week
Good morning, ! Chi from FL. A1 Prof dev means an opportunity to refine or innovate & connect with other professionals.
A1 PD to me is.. https://t.co/YiXU98dWvX .. A little story for engagement followed by butts out of seats activities with others.
A2 I am hoping to gain understanding of digital text reading, programming, wearables & stress mngmt 😀
Q2: I am currently designing/facilitating edcamp style pd (unconferences) for staff and a Teach Like a Pirate book club
Like much else, all has its place. But purpose must fit form, and audience.
Hoping to attend many EdCamps in the area, read some great lit, attend Twitter and Vox chats. is a stretch
A1: PD means new learning something new, different perspectives, alternative way to do something, making connections, and growth.
Isn't it ironic that we are expected to differentiate but most pd doesn't.
. Agreed. Have seen this before and shared with district. Good visual reminder when planning
I think it's a matter of acknowledging the need to develop https://t.co/pM8YBdlLYv
A1) We need to get away from "prof dev"- people don't want to be developed. Needs to be "professional learning". Learning is key.
A2) Continue w/ F2F PD as well as digital PD to assist others. Getting the most out of all the teachers all the time.
good morning to you too! Usually I am not up for
A1 PD is fluid, changes as our needs and world changes. Being willing, open to transformation of ideas that impact learning.
A1: PD is like air. Without it there would be no teaching of value. Might even be hurting Ss.
. And not based on when something is being "provided." Just go learn it, and take some people with you!
How can we, as Ts, do a better job of processing what we learn & implementing a greater percentage of it?
Another inspirational in house PD I run at my school is a Techie Brekkie - it's amazing-find out more here: https://t.co/kzImIxCO5X
Why do you think this is?
Professional development should be self driven - where the learner chooses to not only go but actively seek information & implement
. Hi, Scott! I used to teach at . Was a editor at TIES Magazine, in the tech ed dept as well. Million years ago.
A2: Would like to take part in the conference again this July
Q:2 I'm hoping to be in participatory professional learning where I construct my learning
Sometimes those things are needed with colleagues! I think it's ok if they are thrown in around valuable PD. :)
We use collaboration, debate & reflection for Ss, PDs I've had rarely apply same learning techniques to teachers
A2: I am look for professional development opportunities where I have a chance to network with individuals in an informal setting
A2: Planning to experience PD around Cognitive Coaching, Art & Science of Presenting, Effective Teaching...
A2: Really interested in maker movement and want to learn more... hopefully in hands-on PD. Looks educational, challenging & fun.
I'm hoping to learn from connections, conversations & blogversations with educators, experts, researchers & academics.
A2. Looking for PD for my students who are prospective teachers and the opportunity to be cutting edge.
Do you feel there is any difference between 'PD' and 'professional learning'?
A2 I am hoping to keep learning what global activities there are for my Ss
A1) The best PD is tied to ongoing initiatives at the teacher & team level. Plus, PD should serve long & term outcomes.
If you enjoy reading blogs, a great way to follow and read in one place is I do that when I'm waiting anywhere.
Or combine them. Why can't they be the same?
A1 PD are opportunities to grow as a teacher that reaps benefits for your students
Good morning! New to . A1: PD means inspiration with useable ideas. Leads me make at least one change.
I plan to incorporate more Twitter chats https://t.co/GU0Lbb7Ns9
Q2: What types of professional development opportunities are you hoping to experience in 2016?
An engaging for staff because it's what they want/need! Can't wait! https://t.co/C1tzcPkHdT
edcamps are so much fun to run!
one small step (or one person) at a time!
A2: I'd like diverse topics, resources & ideas shared by passionate colleagues. This is the year I want to roam through ed topics.
One step further: I want to learn what I need/want to learn. . I learn & convert constantly w/o mandates:)
I totally agree! PD has to enrich Ts craft to better enrich Ss experiences. https://t.co/vQbjEqhPLe
A1: More I think about it more my answer evolves. Believe PD needs to make us better educators so we can help students learn better
100% yes. Make it meaningful and transformative. I should be charged up when I leave. https://t.co/RsC3wwEyBQ
A1: .... and PD should inspire you to be better. Just getting info without inspiration is a waste.
A2: My will consist of learning through my PLN, chats, visiting other schools, attending in June, & read!
Yes. Follow-up can't be just at midpoint of the year.
True PL is about us learning together based on our collective and individual needs - on-going, in depth & sometimes risky & hard
I agree mostly but sometimes you don't know what you don't know-it takes a gentle push to explore new https://t.co/dosnUq18IR
A1: when I am responsible for PD I want teacher choice to be the main factor
Data obsession w/o connection to you know, actual human students? I'VE NEVER SEEN THAT https://t.co/KPdT4FJuwI
worst PD I've ever been to dealt with a group of counslers explaining how the got the data for a remediation program 1/2
Success! Tea cup is in hand and toddler is still out!
A4:make it your own, put your passion and heart into it, not a passive, scripted, robotic experience, fit to your specific students
A2: Book study "Word Journeys", more tech application
A2. PD in 2016 should be walk-thrus, , conf., presentations, & my own exploration.
A2 Hoping to attend more freeform PD using the Edcamp model. Love the autonomy of edcamp PD!
A2B: Trying to find anything that will benefit our Ss and school
PD should include a leadership activity! Quick & simple and easy to replicate w students later if wanted. https://t.co/bNSEmRbU2Z
A2: My goals for 2016 are to focus more on leadership opportunities and technology.
Yes! That is why the traditional sit & get, one-size-fits-all approach is so outdated.
A2: learning from others in areas as grant writing, PBIS, & RTI. Gaining PD through technology, my PLN, workshops, & conferences
Good morning Tom, and hello Jeff.
A2 WI state principals' conference, special guest coming to our district, , PLC conference https://t.co/NmTP7JA6E9
Q2: What types of professional development opportunities are you hoping to experience in 2016?
Definitely, & sometimes this is indirect:our deep personal reading makes us better able to model what we do as readers.
. And how do you envision that time?
Part of the pd needs to be embedded action.Let me have time to work w/ the new content w/ the expert present.
Do you ever participate in or chats? Those books are very useful!
There is nothing that holds back good teaching more than poor classroom management.
A2: Hoping to continue to grow from my PLN and make more F2F connections. I'm interested in getting better at everything
A2: I am lucky, we get a high degree of choice and get to offer input into topics. Gamification a topic I want to learn more about.
And yet so much PD is about policies--they're information meetings, not learning, not development. Stultifying.
Prof learning is preferred for sure. Development Ian s funny word
Questions we have in classroom everyday should be focus of PD https://t.co/EvNrKIU9xw
A1: Every day in your classroom is PD if you are a reflective teacher. My students show me how to be a better teacher all the time.
A2 Continued growth of our Inst. Cycles & style PD, hoping the rest of our district will join in w/more indiv PD
A2 Q:2 I'm hoping to be in participatory professional learning where I construct my learning
For me, it would be to know the plan or timeline for the idea. We are not informed as Ts.
A2: I'm excited for some opportunities, book studies via and GHO, traditional conferences, presentation delivery
Me too (re: Makers). Also: NASA has a program called the Hunch program that I would like to learn about / implement
A2: I am planning on joining as many edcamps as I can
Thanks. My entire thought is, "What would make me say 'Wow' & be beneficial, not "We have to do this."
A2: Excited for our district twitter chat this week
A2 Learned to really make professional development count- make the most of time & energy- choose the best PD, chats & conferences!
A1 PD is an itch it's I can scratch with others. It's curiosity manifest. It's meeting people. It's ongoing conversations.
Same here. I think that means facilitating meaningful discussions, like and other chats
Agreed! Model the classrooms you want through PD! Keep giving sit/get and that's what you will see.
A2: National Conference on Teaching and Learning. Never been and I am so excited about it! Also Twitter of course
This is an educator that understands the importance of impacting pre service teachers with meaningful PD https://t.co/QBhCgN1TDs
A2. Looking for PD for my students who are prospective teachers and the opportunity to be cutting edge.
Differentiate PD For Optimal Teacher Engagement - Work in Progress - Education Week Teacher https://t.co/YwxI8cQxxW
A2: I don't want to be focused on one area or initiative. I want to broaden my PD in ways that can move my school forward.
A1: PD means learning something meaningful and relevant to my work. Even better if I can use it to improve in some concrete way.
I do struggle with how semantics can hang us up in education. But these terms represent mental models.
I haven't yet, thanks for the referral! I'll check them out.
A2) Would like type PD for teachers where teachers take the lead and share discoveries
A2. Plan on reading more research, converse with more experienced & knowledgable ppl from all over world & listen with more intent.
A2) design Professional growth opportunities for my Ts that are applicable to our environment, using individual teacher strengths
A2 Hoping to experience PL in smaller groups as thoughts partners- sharing our "collective wisdom" to the field for FB & leadership
Honestly, they can call it Prof Gooflunky as long as Ts control its content, its location, & its implementation.
A2 Continue to refine S choice in lit & WW, expand , and attend some great EdCamps including & .
A2. My hope is that my PD involves me as both a receiver and a provider of learning
A2: I will continue empowering great teachers to lead PD sessions, but also provide time for them to collaborate, model, & share.
A2. Hoping to experiment with blended sessions that allow for access to tremendous expertise at economical costs to districts.
#2 We have some novice special ed teachers and I'm just wondering how I set up PD to make them better
A2 Time, always about time. Not only to hear/read great ideas, but time to plan & implement.Sadly the last 2 neglected in most PD
A2 I plan to attend and other unconferences. Of course there is always !
A2: Targeted PD...focused on our Ss...what do they need? Adjusting our PD based on what we see in the classroom
Status quo is not an option https://t.co/VJZMHZU0WG
remember old saying - some work their first year and repeat it 30 times - I believe we are better today
A2. More teacher driven professional learning through video analysis, reflection & peer feedback w Teams & ATLAS
.A2 attending conference in April, bringing to our district in spring, want to learn more with
a2: just keeping eyes and ears open for opportunities that might arise .. Can't plan for great experiences
Me too! Let's keep in touch!
morning. Bill from snowy Springfield, MO
Try and for chats if you haven't already.
A2: I want to lead more PD sessions and travel. Huge wish, hard in reality!
a lead coach shared her is inspire "2breathe life into ..." Learning for anyone should do that
Agree
Especially grant writing. I've won a few but there is benefit learning from "pros"
https://t.co/BEbEd61ulr
A2: learning from others in areas as grant writing, PBIS, & RTI. Gaining PD through technology, my PLN, workshops, & conferences
A2 In 2016, I'm hoping to reach the next level of prof dev and facilitate more sessions for teachers and parents.
A2: Any I can make it to, in just a couple weeks, and expanding the Twitter chats I regularly join.
A2: Hope to make Atomic Learning more of a PD focus for our staff in 2016 allows for teacher choice
Grace from MA, MS sp. ed. T. Just dropped my daughter off for a track meet. Where can I find the Qs?
Not informed proactively of large district wide changes?
A2 Also love to go to conferences to connect with people from diff areas about education. Love the smaller Saturday conferences!
I'm increasingly interested in this: PD 2 confirm what we do or challenge us 2 do things differently?
- Thanks, friend. :) Hope you are well!
A2: Looking forward 2 learning from my Voxer groups, presenting & attending , learning from & growing w/staff
I think that we should take better advantage of the PLN when they think of PD. Too often we rely on others to shape our PD.
A2. Would like to learn more about screencasting & recording online conversations.
If you love , join tomorrow at 9am ET to talk teaching movies. Tag a friend. Get some popcorn
A2. And, hoping to provide learning through regional Ts and leadersw to complement current consultant pool.
A2 Look for more opportunities to meet other educators F2F/digitally (especially-who push my thinking)- bounce ideas, learn + grow.
A2: Lots of "micro-PD" that helps me learn & grow on a daily basis through interactions w/ my peers, whether that's F2F or virtual.
Tried 4 PD yet? Ongoing opportunities to learn! Our group presents sessions on EdTech Leadership https://t.co/qLpejKdXem
Agree that learning must be ongoing. Ensuring time to do that is not always so easy.
- Sure. Goes for any term we use in education.
A2 hoping to bring more mentality into district level training -- more choice, more self-directed, more personal passion.
Nicely said https://t.co/fgJeBLRAAM
A1) We need to get away from "prof dev"- people don't want to be developed. Needs to be "professional learning". Learning is key.
A2) By seeking new challenges & learning - situations which stretch me. Sharing Peer-to-Peer Learning w/ new audiences.
A2: Finish my Google Trainer cert;evaluate ed. tech frameworks(eg. S.A.M.R);develop MYP units. For me, greatest PD is in the doing.
Although conferences still have a place in PD. Still hoping to go to some year. :(
hop onto talking PD today
Good morning! Doug-MS librarian from central PA.
The term PD often seems to be combined with what I think are administrative duties/functions. That makes it less appealing.
A2: Excited to attend in Denver. The networking w/ other educators at this conference is off the charts!
A2 Looking forward to finishing grad school and have time to seek out other PD opportunities!
A2: on the topic....need to try a virtual conference this year! Any favorites you would recommend?
A1: just attended - learned offers free PD! of bringing in experts!
Understood| I have gone from frequent Tweets of classroom activities & strategies to next to none. 😔 https://t.co/a3zDQN66gW
A1: lots of talk about PLN&SM but how can Ts do this if they are not allowed devices in schools,poor/no wifi? STARTS W/ Leadership
A2) Hope to attend EdCamps and Teach Meets. Most of my growth in the past two years have been from UnCons
I want my teachers to learn from each other, regularly. They'll own it rather than me forcing it.
I know the best PDs have turned me into a fanatical life long learner!
A2: Continue to utilize & Stakeholders voice and empower them with ways to find their desired PD
A2 Exploring more opportunities alongside my students & expanding opportunities.
I want more PD that I can bring back to impact my Ss and Ts immediately this year
A2.1: Want to find more ways to share learning with colleagues as well. Excited to present at for the first time!
Or how about pd where we directly discuss kids? There have been many pd sessions where kids never come up.
Good morning ! Just dropping in quickly!
Unfortunately, it is still mainly "sit and get".
A2 I also feel there can never be enough PD about technology. We need to prepare Ss for job that haven't been created yet.
agreed! But even beyond "knowing" the plan, actually being involved in the process!
have then brainstorm what they would like...get them on Twitter, connect them to other special educators!
A2 I'm attending the technology conference in Raleigh, NC, should be a great PD experience
I'm looking forward to presenting & learning at next week and hopefully this summer
Yes!!!!! I would love some PD time to do these things I do on my own at midnight. https://t.co/s9zPrxh5FW
A2: Finish my Google Trainer cert;evaluate ed. tech frameworks(eg. S.A.M.R);develop MYP units. For me, greatest PD is in the doing.
A1 What PD is not.. lists of tricks, tips or best practices. It's stories about real peoples experiences.
A5: Access-ability. Ex: I am doing PD right now in my sweats while doing laundry!
my PD/PL is 75% self directed now. I don't wait for it to happen to me. Twitter, Voxer, Skype, GHO all allow me to learn on my time
great idea. used to do something similar at our middle school. Need to get back to it.
Most of it is traditionally top-down; beginning w admin navel-gazing, proceed from there. https://t.co/vH4M8JpRfZ
The term PD often seems to be combined with what I think are administrative duties/functions. That makes it less appealing.
A2: How awesome is this? Can't wait to collaborate w my colleagues district wide this week! https://t.co/mxE61jdP9I
That's what I like most about Twitter...on demand learning opportunities with people committed to learning.
What Ts need most is time! Given the time they will dig in & learn how and what they need
Look around-we have amazing educators happy to share...we don't always need outside consultants. Maximize internal resources first.
A1 principal focuses on differentiating PD like we do w Ss. No longer about staff in 1 room. PDing has many diff outlets
- I look forward to Twitter chats, , faculty book clubs conference + rich professional discussions over beverages
If I'm going to use it, I want to know the direct application and how it will work for Jimmy, Joe and Laura.
Morning ! Nice to see you in 😀 love today's topic!
PD facilitators must talk with participants, not talk at us
What is your session? I'm doing a poster session Friday Building your PLN
A2: I want to see my staff grow along the continuum
A2: I'l also like to get my school involved with the
I like this. I want my ideas pushed and challenged--opportunity to grow https://t.co/0DVOovl4Xp
A2 Look for more opportunities to meet other educators F2F/digitally (especially-who push my thinking)- bounce ideas, learn + grow.
When we take PLN-building seriously, we get to choose from a WIDE variety of colleagues.
Isolationism is not an option in the world of education. The more educators share, the more student success will be impacted.
A2) By creating new professional learning modes for our educators.
Maybe. Have you read "Presentation Zen" yet? PPT can be an effective medium if done right.
A2 most exciting learning experience I have had for PD was hosted by
So true. A lot of untapped opportunities out there that we need to take advantage of for Ss and Ts
Amen to that! https://t.co/7xm26nIylB
A2 Look for more opportunities to meet other educators F2F/digitally (especially-who push my thinking)- bounce ideas, learn + grow.
Indeed! Otherwise it's a PLN in name only...not helpful.
Good morning everyone. In think the best professional development offers the participants an opportunity to think creatively.
I've never thought about affirmation when selecting my PD. I usually go for challenging or improvement.
A2 Exploring more deeply the NGSS as well. Lots of neat ways to connect globally & explore inquiry.
allowing leaders to put issues out there & network via PLN's to collaborate on best practices
. This is fantastic!!! thanks for sharing.
A2: I love to read to learn. What great PD books have you read lately? Putting together a summer reading list!
Q2, I've really been interested in my Ss who are unmedicated and all over the place with their ADHD. I'm committed to PD 4 them.
A2: Looking forward to PLC conference this summer & the state writing conference!
- Can't wait to see you in a few days in sunny FL!!
is now trending in USA, ranking 1
excellent point and tech helps us do this. Take for an eg
Interesting https://t.co/m95sKS7GLP
I believe that meaningful PD is about learning over time that is as closely connected to the desks and thinking of Ss as possible.
Q3: Are there lessons learned from past professional development opportunities that you wish not to replicate in 2016?
Use the resources you have to facilitate PD- staff inspires staff! https://t.co/PsKh6SAip4
PD facilitators must talk with participants, not talk at us
A2: Would also like to see progress in makerspaces at our school
A2: My personal PD goals would be further Twitter PLN and attend a few Edcamps.
kathy better late than never 😊
In 2016, I'd ❤️ to help Ts develop personal PL for themselves
So true! I hope it goes well.
A2: work with , attend , attend another camp, grow my PLN on here and embrace what ever comes!
A2: Playing more. Learning about more play in my classroom via , working w and by simply playing
A2) I'm hoping to connect with innovative educators in the new county that I'm working in. Interested in creating a PLN to grow.
A2: proposing a summer Twitter PD chat for school district, I am hoping it gets approved
. Nice idea. Thanks for sharing
A2: Teachers need help with classroom management more than anything. Without that, it doesn't matter how well you can teach.
A2 We're planning an edcamp for parents. We need to learn from them. PD is needs a wider lens.
I'm able to learn anytime, anyplace, & in any space with these digital tools & with the help of Twitter chats & my PLN
A2: Start M-F w/ . At least one chat in PM, on Sat, and filling in btw. It's Now! I'm Here! Rest speculation.
A1: PD to me: BOTH my choice to grow in areas of interest AND obligation to grow in areas identified by my empoyer.
A2: Most important is that I find ways to inspire and help my T's be continue to be better. Help them grow https://t.co/zDOAPZipyY
A2 - I want to see students at our PD! Running sessions for teachers. That would make 2016 for me!

7.Good Saturday
8.Keemstar
A2. I also need to make sure that I'm exploring ideas beyond leadership and learning "box". Sometimes we get caught in same cycle
Agreed! And help reluctant Ts see this undeniable fact!
A3: PD with lack of focus never works. Even if PD is monthly or slower, make a plan for continuity toward a single goal.
A3 Trust teachers to seek viable PD when given time to do so. Don't overplan.
Had great PD on DI for G&T yesterday with Jeanne Purcell from UCONN. Heard ideas, worked in groups, created lessons to try asap
Agreed! PD should feel actionable and purposeful https://t.co/P3dMEHqmSf
I want more PD that I can bring back to impact my Ss and Ts immediately this year
Being involved in creating the plan. We often have a better idea of tools & techniques.
A2: I'd like to see PD opportunities that a student let
A2: Seeking more authentic collaboration with campus teams.
PD should be uncomfortable. Growing pains often are
no, I haven't. adding it to my list! Thanks!
Good morning. Teacher in small rural community. Twitter opened doors for PD everyday. Ignite passion and fires to teach and learn
PD has to reflect institutional priorities & individual. It is true that we all need a push sometimes! https://t.co/x4lEhwaK6X
I agree mostly but sometimes you don't know what you don't know-it takes a gentle push to explore new https://t.co/dosnUq18IR
A1: when I am responsible for PD I want teacher choice to be the main factor
not sure why, the best PD is ongoing, experiential, collaborative, & personalized, hence the chats we attend
A1) We're a part of the PD process. It's about learning, sharing, and growing.
Curiosity-yes! How can we do things better? https://t.co/lGYg26VBQ6
A1 PD is an itch it's I can scratch with others. It's curiosity manifest. It's meeting people. It's ongoing conversations.
I love it. Why is it so bad to give Ts time to do what they'd like to make themselves better?
Q3 yes one shoes does not fit all. Sit & git is bad. Use talent from within. Model good practices w/ delivery of content.
Share best practice resources in 2016 utilizing the hashtag.
A3 Not asking staff what they need or want to learn and just making PD one size fits all. https://t.co/z6uFDtgQdS
Q3: Are there lessons learned from past professional development opportunities that you wish not to replicate in 2016?
a2: seeking actionable oriented learning
I agree. An idea of how we are expected to implement the new idea.
Yes yes yes!
https://t.co/eVcT27VFWb
PD! Professional and Personal Development! We have to move to becoming better teachers, learners and human beings! Loving!
I agree! https://t.co/ru8N7bxNdZ
I want my teachers to learn from each other, regularly. They'll own it rather than me forcing it.
Great book. Easy to follow and makes SENSE. Key for me: Stop with the text and let pics tell story.
good morning Lorinda! I'm addicted to this !
You got that right! https://t.co/0sHoDbjPfw
we must give our teachers ample quality (stress free) time to get out of their 4-walls!
you really can not go wrong. Well said.
A2: More of this: what I and some other great Ts are doing to change the face of PD across a whole region: https://t.co/okK2gyrRWF
exactly! same with involving Ss in their own learning
A3. PD requires time for reflection, creativity, & playing… I’ve had PD that was just facts, facts, facts… leave room for process
Would love to hear more about this
yes I think there is so much potential there!
A3: leaving PD without an action step will guarantee that the PD will not be acted on. Ts must connect PD to their practice.
Love the word ongoing. So true. https://t.co/IymQcGv6QH
not sure why, the best PD is ongoing, experiential, collaborative, & personalized, hence the chats we attend
A2. Currently studying for the Level 2 exam.
Love using 4 book studies & "in the moment" reflect betwn classes w/ thought partner
A2: It would be nice to go out in the community & find people who want to build relationships w/schools. Learning opp for all.
I think the term "best practices" is over used: Prefer what "works for my students" ....
hahaa kaut posted with the word actionable as well!
And leads to action. . . It's all good, but only PDL when it leads us to change what we currently do!
and if it will actually work with the Ss we have.
A2: learning from small group PD with my teaching team and of course Twitter
A2: Continuing with excellent Twitter chats, reading, book studies, collaborative inquiry with colleagues (school-based).
this is key: trusting teachers & empowering them to follow own learning paths (generally within organisational vision)
And how do you decide if it's meaningful? https://t.co/TDgcPBjJgC
A1: PD means learning something meaningful and relevant to my work. Even better if I can use it to improve in some concrete way.
Q3, accidentally showing up in a session at a conference put on by the company - a sales pitch. No thank you!
very much the same here. Why wait to learn and develop when you can go and find resources and support for yourself.
This is a neat idea. We need to do better job of making parents informed partners. . https://t.co/aPxdRYFUCD
A2 We're planning an edcamp for parents. We need to learn from them. PD is needs a wider lens.
Conferences have always helped me to network with like-minded educators and share best practices. in July.
I usually do that over breaks. Take time to recharge and refocus.
A3: Just listening to something I'm already proficient with. Waste of precious time & don't want to be disrespectful to presenter
Agreed, like an style smackdown at a faculty meeting, or poster session in your school cafeteria https://t.co/IyTzGPGCAw
Look around-we have amazing educators happy to share...we don't always need outside consultants. Maximize internal resources first.
A3: "Pray & Spray" model with a full room of Ts was not effective...PD needs to be in small groups to foster authentic discussions
A3: This is simple but I wish more organizers would utiiitze the surveys that they make us fill out at the end of PD days.
A3: Make PD choices that pushes me. Put learning first but make sure to have some fun, too, or it's easy to get burned out
Question 3
https://t.co/Cfzod0buB1
Q3: Are there lessons learned from past professional development opportunities that you wish not to replicate in 2016?
we must become "more understanding" human beings. As educators especially Ts we have to "get" the lives of our Ss.
We hope to remodel or lib into an LLC. W/ adm support we visited two other schools to learn from their process! Great Prof learning
A3: I want to be more focused on implementation and follow-thru. Don't want to drop ball after PD
Join today! That will be their focus.
A3: PD isn't one size fits all & needs to be individualized & relatable. The followup support AFTER is just as important as the PD
Just like students people who are in the professional development want to know that the presenter cares about student success.
A3: I learned to take more ownership of my PD and not to hold back. We all have valuable insight to share.
A3: well, any PD that people are forced to sit through or that comes tacked on to a staff meeting
I also teach in a small, one-section school. I agree that Twitter has opened doors!
A3. Continue to remember that just because great PDL can be designed, doesn't mean it should be. Audience always matters.
they will go further with their own learning if they are in the drivers seat rather than having it done to them
A3: Sit & get for 45 minutes on an early release day needs to stop. Instead, work with school team to deliver PD & build capacity
True! Ss should be involved in the pd plan as well!
A3: I find traditional "sit & get" conferences much harder to sit through. I need connection + collaboration with other educators.
A2: I am going to focus this year on increasing student reflections in my class. Going to do this through Google Classroom.
A3. Couldn't beat 2015 PD. Feel very fortunate-Harvard, ISTE & visiting & meeting many friends from twitter https://t.co/l6ifYdbkXP
A3 I really like the model and wonder about opportunities to explore this alongside colleagues.
Yes, I usually end up with a book list and 4-5 articles bookmarked to read!
A2 I welcome any and all professional learning experiences that STRETCH my comfort level. I wrote about it: https://t.co/XNJXZMxOeU
A3 I begin worrying if I'm attending professional development no presenters are connected & learned I'm usually right to worry!
in total agreement. Work to create this culture/provide time for these oops. As admin imp. to invest in Ts.
A2. Attending our is always a yearly highlight to my PL
A2) I'm hoping to attend edcamps in 2016! (and hoping to organize some ) as well
A2: Spending the year supporting my students leading PD on what kids need.
A3 Lessons learned -- Don't try to use too much technology when providing tech PD!
A2: I'd like to see for teachers in 2016!
A3: Why assign PD to specific days? See a great TED Talk? Share the link via email. Find a great book? Leave a copy in the lounge.
A3. An example: We put together what would have been amazing math clinics in partnership with our regional districts (1/2)
A3) UGH… don’t you hate these. Sales pitch disguised as PL for teachers. https://t.co/e5mQT0omIc
Q3, accidentally showing up in a session at a conference put on by the company - a sales pitch. No thank you!
A2 I love EdCamp and I plan to attend 3 or 4 this year. Also working to bring some more colleagues with me this year
A3: Sometimes, the change is mine. A negative attitude can ruin the value of great PD! Be open minded and willing to try new stuff
I lean on the term 'professional learning'.
A3 To be an active participant in PD and not expect the presenter to make me learn or get better.
A3 Lessons: Vary pace of session, have samples at the ready, and always allot time for Q&A (10-15 min)
I can't tolerate PD that preaches DI & then has me sit & be lectured to for 6 hours Get me involved through backchanneling & active
A3:That there is not a 1 size fits all PD,having Personalized PD allows the T what they need to help reach their greatest potential
A3 PDing just for the sake of PDing. Lucky to have ops to develop skills I can see the most growth in n will impact Ss most
A3: Sometimes the best PD happens when we admin get out of the way. Empower teachers, let them run, and get out of the way.
What a morning of sharing!!
and
Does it get any better?
Sounds like EPIC learning: Experiential, Participatory, Image-rich, Connected!
good luck!!! I really liked lvl 1 and 2, it was a lot on the pedagogy and not just google as a tool.
Q3: As a PD facilitator it's so important to identify teachers needs & interests and use that information to plan a day of learning
A3 I begin worrying if I'm attending professional development & no presenters are connected-I learned I'm usually right to worry!
totally agree sit and get is someone's else's idea of what is good for you
A3: I don't want to replicate past mandatory summer sessions of teacher PD. PD should be individualized and choice should be given.
A3: The question confuses me: Learning from mistakes; or not repeating the same PD?
. What?? No devices allowed in 2016?
A3 That when you are in initiation phase, you must pay close attention to affective/emotional response of learners
"" shows up as trending topic in United States at rank 1.
A3: Lesson 1: Continue to give choice but must also guide people by helping them understand what is needed and why
Is term "Best Practice" over used in education? Implies other practices are inferior... aren't practices student dependent?

Been there ... done that... Lesson learned: create plan before attending a conference.

Q3, accidentally showing up in a session at a conference put on by the company - a sales pitch. No thank you!
A3: Making sure there is a clear PD vision and school/district plan.
A2 I'm really looking forward to in June. I guess it's mostly application discovery..
A2: also want to explore PD possibilities on in 2016.
A2) When I design PD, I begin with goals and audience participation in mind, I cannot stand unilateral, unrelatable presentations
Totally agree with this...easy to fall short here https://t.co/OuoTqCZQzB
A3: I want to be more focused on implementation and follow-thru. Don't want to drop ball after PD
A3: I hope that educators are not forced to sign up for and sit in on sessions that are not relevant in 2016
Agreed. Working together. As admin I recognize the Ts are the real experts. https://t.co/dX9W73TYdK
PD facilitators must talk with participants, not talk at us
A3: There are some that I just wish not to repeat, remember, or acknowledge in anyway. Yeah, useless...
A3 play needs to be included in PD and it needs to be more CD (collaborative development)
Q3: Large trainings on a literacy tool- where 100 plus staff are learning from the company who created the tool- no impact!
More PD is needed in culturally responsive pedagogy to create an inclusive school climate
which is why everyone should give an a try!
A2:We are exploring cross-cultural conversations, what are the challenges, benefits & risks, why essential https://t.co/UqnwkajrGg
professional learning 4 NGSS is all about three dimensional learning
Differentiated PD is the best!
https://t.co/3xYrVJHNBa
Q3: As a PD facilitator it's so important to identify teachers needs & interests and use that information to plan a day of learning
I agree! You get what you put in when it comes to PD.
A3: School specific PD was much more effective..Ts sharing with Ts where relationships are fostered by learning together
will try! thanks for the tip!
I want to scream this from the rooftops! Let me guide my own pd https://t.co/1mJYMku0sI
I can't tolerate PD that preaches DI & then has me sit & be lectured to for 6 hours Get me involved through backchanneling & active
Question in the moment - How do you guys curate & organize all of the great resources you gain from ? Which app/program do you use?
I'd say what you experienced and don't want to experience again. https://t.co/0TVq4oYpFi
A3: The question confuses me: Learning from mistakes; or not repeating the same PD?
We ask what next step we will each take.
great opportunities through Voxer!
Yes! It's also great to have time to share new learning with staff--
Some great PD per since he is an encourager educator! So, too, 🍖👔
A3: One size does not fit all!
A3. Give others time to practice. Ensure that the PD that has been shared also comes with tools to accomplish the work.
A3)Any PD where Ts are not engaging needs to be reevaluated. Admin needs to be open to surveying staff to evaluate effectiveness.
The "golden ticket" to professional learning... https://t.co/8VQEwTJg0u
A3: Sometimes the best PD happens when we admin get out of the way. Empower teachers, let them run, and get out of the way.
A3: Don't take on too much. Change is a process and must be gradual.
A3 don't want to replicate: 1. whole group mtgs (200 Ts) 2. data w/o purpose 3. not acknowledging/using Ts professional experience
.A3 not having plan for application is a recipe for wasted PD time/$ https://t.co/663GNuZSgn
Q3: Are there lessons learned from past professional development opportunities that you wish not to replicate in 2016?
a3: I use the "rule of two feet" at any conference. No point sitting through a session that doesn't meet your needs
A3: With increasingly limited professional development dollars, the "bang for your buck" factor is a paramount concern.
A3. We need to trust teachers to be professional and to give them time for PD. One session can’t meet all needs
A3. In the name of all things holy, don't read your powerpoint slides for an hour, give me a couple of handouts, and call it PD.
Yes sir! https://t.co/nLAlzpwaL6
in total agreement. Work to create this culture/provide time for these oops. As admin imp. to invest in Ts.
A3: A great article that articulates what I hope we don't replicate (i.e. a traditional PD model): https://t.co/9ww4owxwV6
A2 connecting with Ts to find ways to empower/engage students. Creating opportunities for Ss to collaborate/share their passions
A3: we are focusing our PLC time on the math curriculum. Bringing resources, assessments, etc. We will slowly build our own.
Yes! I always pay attention to the presenter name & title now. I'm not afraid to walk out of those.
Not even a little bit! Why can't we differentiate our pd?
I believe S led PD is a great way to increase . What do you want to learn, how. Etc
also let conference know when session is a sales pitch
A3. But, wasn't a high importance initiative for many districts, so many did not run. Frustrating for all. Must do our HW.
I've found great for learning & connecting. got me into it. :)
A3 I really take PD surveys seriously and try to modify and adapt PD based on feedback.
We need that time and different teachers need it at different times. Some before, during & after school.
very true. So question is how do we encourage more teachers to engage and share?
A3) Attitude is everything. Bring it and you will get something.
I despise the term and yet I use it to appease my director for evaluations. Working on changing that mindset.
Catch a recap of the action from Denver where the Broncos beat the Chargers 27-20.
It seems like elementary schools do this better than secondary where I'm from; more community-focused https://t.co/p0zr8oQJFF
A2: It would be nice to go out in the community & find people who want to build relationships w/schools. Learning opp for all.
YES! One size does not fit all. https://t.co/8yC4PuuMh6
I think the term "best practices" is over used: Prefer what "works for my students" ....
A3: The top-down, one-size-fits-all, sit and get, hours-based accountability model of PD shows NO impact. Get away from it.
A3: Step back and allow me to learn! Don't talk at me! I want to engage in the process and walk away ready to implement.
A3: I don't want to replicate PD that turns into a meeting which could have been handled through an email.
a3 part two: when presenting, don't be there'd when people leave, it may not meet their needs and that is okay!
doesn't meaningful comes fr inside others - I can setup situation 2 increase likelihood but I can't mandate
A2: Ways I hope to experience PD: EdCamps, webinars, book studies, MOOCs & of course Twitter chats on topics of interest!
Good stuff Jon! https://t.co/g7GbDzQCap
Brad, I just shared this concept during a Twitter training session, but you worded it much better than I did!!👍🏻 satchat
A3: Changing Ts mindset that they all have something to offer!
A3: the usual, be introduced 2 several something new/exciting things in 1 day and then back to having no time to actually integrate
We must be active participants. What are we bringing to the table to add value to the learning? https://t.co/D58GmdWDAr
A3 To be an active participant in PD and not expect the presenter to make me learn or get better.
A3: It's simple. Even when leading PD, don't speak AT people, speak WITH people. Ask Qs, engage in meaningful dialogue.
A3: Sit and get, spray and pray, one size fits all doesn't work. Its traditional and it needs to stop.
Preaching to the choir! PD must be followed by 1:1 coaching and support or it can be a waste of time! https://t.co/TM15TJJvV6
A3: leaving PD without an action step will guarantee that the PD will not be acted on. Ts must connect PD to their practice.
As moderators we will crowd source a few times per year and put that out to our PLN
https://t.co/jcOYQ3f0QB
Question in the moment - How do you guys curate & organize all of the great resources you gain from ? Which app/program do you use?
Hoping to make this happen w a district edcamp-style@event in March! https://t.co/sCDyZUILTM
A3: Sometimes the best PD happens when we admin get out of the way. Empower teachers, let them run, and get out of the way.
When I look at a "Best Practice", I ask, looks great on paper but does it work in clssrm of real students
A3. Ensure that PD as some active moments. This year in team meeting & large school meeting we start with an icebreaker/game.
Admin navel gazing! Funny. How should it be in your ideal world?
is that the (im)possible dream, Brad?
Ongoing is important! Be always growing as instructors, learners, and individuals. A persona growth mindset!
Feedback is paramount to PDL success. Surveys, F2F convos, and phone calls are required!
Sad but true. Can't tell you how many Ts are restricted/fearful or denied, especially in NJ
oh man I am so over the sales pitch sessions. I never walk out of a session midway but these I do
A3: Assuming what Ts need and giving it to them is not a road I want to travel.
A3: Square peg -> round hole PD. As a band teacher, I've spent far too much time in PD that is not relevant to my classes.
Any certain book your interested in?
A3: limiting myself to just one/two goals. If not, I try too many and never fully implement anything. Down side of Twitter!
A3) Lesson: so often PD is dropped into teachers' laps and then no follow up as to how or if ideas were beneficial, tried, etc.
A3: Its all good though since for every useless PD I have numerous outstanding ones in contrast.
Thanks. That's what I hear about it. A little nervous to do it.
You got that right l! Pedagogy and relationships trump technology https://t.co/Q5yuXQHYTl
.A3 not having plan for application is a recipe for wasted PD time/$ https://t.co/663GNuZSgn
Q3: Are there lessons learned from past professional development opportunities that you wish not to replicate in 2016?
A3a I gave two talks at K-12 conferences last year. I didn't do so well. Next time I need to ground shares in teacher context.. +
Exactly! PD should be differentiated like we do for Ss. We're all still learners.
build positive relationships: open doors to quality planning/instruction/reflection. This minimizes issues.
Until it comes to HS athletics, then it's all about taking everything the community can give. https://t.co/p0zr8oQJFF
A2: It would be nice to go out in the community & find people who want to build relationships w/schools. Learning opp for all.
The key is we must use the data we collect. If we don't we've wasted responders time!
Yes I did & & team nudged me ever so gently :) https://t.co/n2rBQtzNlY
I've found great for learning & connecting. got me into it. :)
A3 NO MORE PD that includes k-12 Ts in one room, getting talked at or PD w/out a purpose Differentiate, allow T input !
Crave interaction to avoid the sessions getting so boring https://t.co/v3MjiwHiXd
Q3: Are there lessons learned from past professional development opportunities that you wish not to replicate in 2016?
A3. Involve your teachers and your students in PD… their voice is powerful and everyone has something to offer
thanks Trish - we've played with the with adults and kids in last few weeks
I also use the rule that anyone should be able to speak during a presentation
a3: Absolutely! Early on when presenting pd I used to talk too much. Get out of the way & let them learn.
Nice!
I hope so to. Really feel that PD needs to grow from within. https://t.co/EiSEikBqsO
Hoping to make this happen w a district edcamp-style@event in March! https://t.co/sCDyZUILTM
A3: Sometimes the best PD happens when we admin get out of the way. Empower teachers, let them run, and get out of the way.
A3: This year I experienced another 1-2 hr lecture for PD. I prefer teacher-led, hands-on, roundtable PD! ( rocks!)
A3. We have to provide support/coaching through the process- it can't be a one and done event.
thanks. need to map out time to make sure we do this.
A3: Present from your heart. Attend what brings you joy. Time is too valuable to do things that take away from you & your family.
A3: Looking forward to hearing speak at our regional gathering this month!
A3) PD that doesn’t give you anything you can use the next day…
Q4: How important is autonomy as it relates to professional development?
A3: We need to stop herding Ts like cattle into large rooms, talking at them for hours at a time and calling it 'professional' dev.
With need admin this year we have gotten away from the meeting that could be an email & it's appreciated.
A3 PD should result in some type of new inst. 4 inst/learning in the classroom
So many school leaders talk the talk, but DEFINITELY DONT WALK THE WALK- reality in 2016
Hopefully a desire to learn and a positive attitude. :)
A3 Communication to stakeholders, leading prof learn, classroom interactions-- should all start with the WHY
just looking at key hashtags can help as well!
Avoiding one size fits all PD would be nice, esp. @ grade level. KNG is VERY different from 3rd, 5th, 7th.
But it's important for admin to participate- modeling risk taking and learning alongside! https://t.co/3Gl0ngapQw
Hoping to make this happen w a district edcamp-style@event in March! https://t.co/sCDyZUILTM
A3: Sometimes the best PD happens when we admin get out of the way. Empower teachers, let them run, and get out of the way.
, agreed! This is definitely my favorite aspect of Edcamps. Why can't this be a norm in ALL conferences?!
A2: together, talking, bouncing, writing, thinking, improving, mind-blown
Sometimes -- but admins are key to sustainability. Admins need to model their vision.
A3 Pd is great but must have time to utilize what was learned or else wasted opportunity
We do that once a month but don't utilize the half day for T need. Just district directed pd.
We have a biweekly district chat & did a book study chat . Inspiring conversations!
A3: want to better maintain connections made with others to collaborate on projects.
Interesting, in that I used to talk much more when I was teaching, as well. I listen much more now.
I'm in charge of one that's Soc Studies-specific grades 7-12 in August; I'd love to see how yours works https://t.co/6O4F0Lwy94

or for Dwayne, Nadeen or Ahmed?
Learning alongside our Ss--love this mindset! Not all Ta are comfortable saying that they don't know https://t.co/IPdyoDMUaY
A2 Exploring more opportunities alongside my students & expanding opportunities.
4) PD should reflect relevance and autonomy, Either of those could be represented through selection of topics or delivery method.
Great idea. This would really be insightful for teachers to hear student concerns. https://t.co/SblFvKhMzd
A2 - I want to see students at our PD! Running sessions for teachers. That would make 2016 for me!
I adopted this rule with my No-Risk book club, trying to run it like an edcamp, room is the expert.
Yes. This is why I love EdCamps and TeachMeets.
- Yep. Agree, 100%. Modeling for admin is key. Not just giving direction...
A3: want to better maintain connections made with others to collaborate on projects.
A1. Learning is a whole life process. is learning journey of exploring myself by means of puposeful learning
we need 7 hrs outside school hrs PD; chat would meet 5x over summer to learn/discuss just like we do here
So true. And the freedom to utilize. Must be revisited.
https://t.co/ywV2xb779U
A3 Pd is great but must have time to utilize what was learned or else wasted opportunity
how can you have best practices since we are always trying to improve PD
so agree with that, don't be the sage on the stage, facilitator of key dialogue
This is important. But so is process. What facilitation moves allow for all voice and valuing process?
A3) presenter reading slides& not elaborating, sit & git, a PD for the sake of just having a PD
A3: Main focus has been on in-house collaboration and developing strong teacher leaders/relying on their professional expertise.
A3b I thought if I figured out the HOW teachers like to experience PD it'd be ok. Nope. WHAT still matters more. WHY, too.
A3 Mistakes not to repeat: stay for the afternoon session at & do not pass up a session.
A3 no more sitting in a classroom at desks while I listen to a teacher lecture! I want to participate in workshops
A2: I want to attend an edcamp in 2016. Never been to one. Many on Twitter rave about them & I want 2 participate 2 stretch myself
A4: extremely important - the best PD is formulated at the local level with teacher input
LOVE these phrases! Best descriptions of the worst type of PD https://t.co/PBxkMLczen
A3: Sit and get, spray and pray, one size fits all doesn't work. Its traditional and it needs to stop.
When I give a study skills or college prep professional development I look at current trends to make the presentation relevant.
Amen to that! https://t.co/VcTMxHSGBS
A3: We need to stop herding Ts like cattle into large rooms, talking at them for hours at a time and calling it 'professional' dev.
A3: You have feet! If the presentation isn't working for you, excuse yourself and seek a different opportunity.
Behind the Steel Curtain, a Pittsburgh Steelers community
A3 In 25 years, I think I walked away w/few ideas from "scattershot" auditorium style, one size fits all PD lectures
love this idea, I am trying to do this with Voxer.
I am sure you will rock it! The only awkward part is the web cam is on the whole time lol creeped me out
Devices OK;no Twitter: also,Haiku platform disabled as images won't load, thus Slideshows "erase"
How do you crowd source the info, though? Gather it and send it out in a blogpost? Some other means?
people afraid to be offended..need to change mindset
A3. I don't want PD that I can't see a use for - I stuff that applies. Instructor must show that.
E.g., Ss teaching Ts about LGBT issues. I've seen that in my school.
A3. If I'm so bored I'd rather be grading essays, there's something wrong with your PD. Make it relevent & engaging. Like we teach!
That sounds about right. There just isn't a lot of time or even a PL cert for what could be the best PL experience.
A3) Always aware of the "ratio" - who is doing the talking, thinking, reflecting, creating & working to raise it.
A3: Best PD is when passion meets practice. Too often, PD is about receiving info. and theory. Allow for T interest & inspiration.
I love PD that takes time to inspire or support me as a teacher. Not all about scores or fixing problems. Positivity is contagious
Thank you for the morning motivation! I'm off to be a learner today :)
presentations should also be modeling for the classroom. Modeling should be thought of everywhere
input from Ts, have Ts come up with options, Ts present. It's what we want from S; let Ts be professionals https://t.co/4KKE6PNkvU
Admin navel gazing! Funny. How should it be in your ideal world?
A3: we hope to keep professional learning differentiated
And join as a co learner. https://t.co/YCJwPGRcQG

A3. If I'm so bored I'd rather be grading essays, there's something wrong with your PD. Make it relevant & engaging. Like we teach!
A3: Be in control of your attitude even if you are not in control of the pd
A4: Autonomy is important. People must own their learning. Just like working with Ss, Ts must find it relevant and inspiring
Agree! https://t.co/CCxL614vOK
A3: Best PD is when passion meets practice. Too often, PD is about receiving info. and theory. Allow for T interest & inspiration.
I try to pause and ask questions to the audience throughout
Very important to listen https://t.co/tD6iWSBgjU
Interesting, in that I used to talk much more when I was teaching, as well. I listen much more now.
is great there's others on voxer.
A3. important that PD be done in house/when the mood strikes. We have had T lead PD on all sorts of topics. Provides choices.
And yet, sometimes those planning don't know how make it stick. What do you think works?
A4 Autonomy is important, but sometimes I don't know what I don't know and need some guidance. https://t.co/9YIaTlYOoA
Q4: How important is autonomy as it relates to professional development?
Plz install and rate Trivia Intime for android, link in bio
I keep saying this. gets it and provided a wonderful opportunity to explore for us.
Follow up critical for all parties involved.
ya I think so! We often miss the biggest stakeholder at the table...the students. Not that they know EVERYTHING ;)
It's very hard 2 instruct a large & diverse group. More focused groups, such as grade levels work best! https://t.co/woqEjU5ysE
A3 NO MORE PD that includes k-12 Ts in one room, getting talked at or PD w/out a purpose Differentiate, allow T input !
A4. Very important if pd is to be personalised for individual teacher needs. Self directed Pd / PL
What if it was higher frequency & how amplitude than that? What if Ts were given an hour each day for pd?
A3 We had our firs library media "Unconference" yesterday. PD was based on survey of TLs and what they wanted.
A3: I think it depends on the goal. Sometimes, it's huge. But sometimes forced learning and discomfort can also help us to grow.
Another positive trend has been increased collaboration with neighboring school districts to discuss + share best practices.
That's why more planning needs to go into PDL design. Not just about facilitation of the session.
Yes to
https://t.co/HcENTJdB5k
A4. Very important if pd is to be personalised for individual teacher needs. Self directed Pd / PL
Consider learning things WAAAAYYY outside of ed for PD. Even new careers/fields. Will transform your teaching and vision.
I understand your view, but if you are learning, it is changing you as a person and a teacher…
I suggested at a local EdCamp that we start doing this at District PDs.
A3: Edcamp style PD's seem to be my favorite lately. Give's T's choices & the presenters are usually experts as well as passionate.
A4: I am torn here. Some Ts I know would benefit from an area, but won't go voluntarily. Making larger group first gets them there.
We set up either a google doc or form and have and then clean it up to send out to everyone. https://t.co/vHbI9XKpes
How do you crowd source the info, though? Gather it and send it out in a blogpost? Some other means?
yes! I want to be able to leave a Death by PowerPoint presentation
What if PD was valued in the same way as lunch and prep and garnered similar time and support?
A4: Autonomy is critical. In our district we provide teachers with the time and freedom to improve their craft
Had Canadians eds visit TeachMeet Sydney Opera House. That was pretty cool to share. Free PD by tchrs for tchrs
A4: it is essential. Ts know what they need in their classroom & need ability to choose their oppurtnities.
wait for the PhD to kick in! It's pretty awesome learning.
Often the "What & Why?" is misunderstood and interferes with the delivery of an effective PD presentation
I am 4 every five minutes, but I usually don't plan presentation more than 15 mins into it. I flow w/ the spirit
PD must be meaningful and relevant!
True story. It happens that lessons get planned during sessions that can't easily be left for another. https://t.co/qW2dDdA0Fd
A4 makes a bigger impact then anything else- is a key motivator & choice leads to investment in learning
Yes. And provide appropriate wait time. Adult learners need processing time too!
"" shows up as trending topic in Canada at rank 1.
A3: specific topic-umbrella topics lose me, choose for grade level specific- need application and room for growth.
I'd settle for a half hour check in to see if other Ts can help me grow my new idea!

A3: Edcamp style PD's seem to be my favorite lately. Give's T's choices & the presenters are usually experts as well as passionate.
A4: Autonomy aligns with learner ownership and creating lifelong learning. Key in all learning including PD.
My tweetdeck 🔥& crashed from all the activity! Switching devices…
A4: Autonomy is PD is like autonomy with Ss in the classroom- admin needs to help with alignement to vision and connection 2 goals
a3 part two: when presenting, don't be offended when people leave, it may not meet their needs and that is okay!
A2) Really working on creating a few good questions similar to and give space for conversation - face-to-face "Twitter chats."
point and case- too many traditional mindsets at Admin levels, which denounce tech
very true. So autonomy combined with collaboration and sharing
A3 - tired of 1 size fits all whole school model - got to meet Ts at their level - challenge them just enough and honour knowledge
well put! School should provide an environment that fosters teacher passions as well as student passions!
Autonomy is a key factor - but what about those who don't have it? Where there is no drive to push forward or try new things?
Love this idea. Many of my great lesson connections came from my hobbies/events, not from direct PD.
This sounds like such a great idea!
Yes- thinking marathon not a sprint. I have to keep telling myself that. :)
Same thing with any non-mandated PD https://t.co/fUIHAW404L
a3: I use the "rule of two feet" at any conference. No point sitting through a session that doesn't meet your needs
A4. Autonomous PD is essential. I have to want to be there to learn. But I'm not above bribery, so cookies and coffee help.
Ss may be the on demand generation, but that makes us theon demand gen of Educators. https://t.co/X7QLP1xCHo
I want more PD that I can bring back to impact my Ss and Ts immediately this year
, absolutely, and I think this can happen if we shift the frame of focus in PD from the presenter to the participants.
We can and we must...for meaningful learning to occur! 😊
Thanks . Intense Lego building has erupted in the living room. It is hard to resist that kind of hands on PD. Have a great weekend.
Yes, and I'm interested in that internal criteria.
That was supposed to be A4 https://t.co/DWA4JA2gmU
A3: Edcamp style PD's seem to be my favorite lately. Give's T's choices & the presenters are usually experts as well as passionate.
A1. If someone forces me to develop, it is not my personal development. My PD must be motivated by my intention
A4: I think autonomy should be 50/50. Some choice, some guidance.
I'm imagining applying that rule to required PD day, lol. The shock! The horror!
There are Ts who are there bc they're REQUIRED to be, and resent it--how do we inspire them?
Love this! I visited and his staff to learn from them and ended up Collab on a totally different project!
In 2016...PD for school leaders on supporting teachers to be more creative and autonomous! Giving them space to take risks!
Thank you for adding that. Cultural context is essential. We live in a smaller world, every day.
figuring it out that is reflective process of time together and apart to engage & that is something we own
RT A1. If someone forces me to develop, it is not my personal development. My PD must be motivated by my intention
Attitude is important. I've sat thru tons of boring PD but with proper attitude, I still learned something.
Yes. Great PD ideas. But avoids culturally responsive pedagogies. Let's work on inequities thru these strategies.
key 2 PL - allow voice & choice 4 Ts. Same as Ss. We own it, we learn it, we apply it by creating, making, sharing, growing 2gether
, how was the response? Are you able to do this in your district?
Yes. Gladwell's "Tipping Point" is a must-read too!
I think it's important to learn with one another.
well said. it's same for class everyday. I shifted title of "lesson plan" to "student experience" better focus
Totally would agree with both of you on that.
A4 Autonomous PD great except one don't go it alone. Where's your school going? What do learners need? Be ready when they get there
I think more schools should start there own blogs so parents can get information to help their students.
A4: PD should reflect what we want for our students...autonomy is high on the list!
. Great point John! Open the doors, share the practice, and tap into resources in your area!
Professional learning in classrooms can be powerful!
Typos- sorry "should say "in PD" and "alignment" (typing too fast) :) https://t.co/J5luQXWWja
A4: Autonomy is PD is like autonomy with Ss in the classroom- admin needs to help with alignement to vision and connection 2 goals
The trend is starting to shift but not enough. I hate wasting precious learning time. I'm so eager to grow.
A4: Be explicit about being explicit. Too often we don't paint a clear enough picture of what the change should look like.
A4: Autonomy + Ownership = ++good. Autonomy + Lackadaisical-ness = ++bad. Never forget the Professional in PD!
agree Jay. There are times for both.
I can learn anything today. Over past 4 years I've learned 2 new careers. This is what kids'll face, too.
The size of your PD team is probably not a 25 to 1 ratio like classes. Based on alone, Ts have to own their learning.
.A3 having a disconnect b/w mission and PD outcomes. Learners w/o understanding of how this will improve their craft
A3: learn not be bring in outside people who don't know audience
A4. Autonomy can be related to differentiation. With autonomy you can get what you need. Not one size fits all.
A4) Teahcers need to have a say in their own professional development. They want to be involved in each stage of the process..
And professional learning sessions must have ample opportunity to be an active participant. 2 to 10 ratio.
is trending #1! Keep sharing your insight!
Intriguing. That's how I've found my best ideas for Ss; how does it play out in PD https://t.co/pKCFNwftVh
Love this idea. Many of my great lesson connections came from my hobbies/events, not from direct PD.
Ah, ok. How does that get sent out? I would love to see it.
A4 Self-driven learning - autonomy- is important, but also need to differentiate PD and allow gradual release.
Yes. Free flow is important, but we must make sure audience can answer: "Why am I here?"
A4)Autonomy is critical. Our Ts are professionals. They may need some guidance but they know their Ss and what they need to meet them
A4:Autonomy is important,it gets Ts to buy in and own their learning,Ts see the value in it and not as a time to clean their inbox
Autonomy -necessary. Our district is giving us time to work on our own projects this year
A4 without autonomy can you really change something? When a tree falls n forest w/ 0 people around does it make sound
A4: Autonomy is important but sometimes, you don't know what you don't know. There needs to be exposure to new ideas too.
. A4. Pre-service Ts and Ts should have the opportunity to choose their own PD, from a variety of provided choices.
A4: how you learn/develop the idea is where autonomy comes in. What the topic is may be selected for you. Is that wrong?
The teachers thought it was a great idea, but are afraid to do it. I encouraged it at my training session.
A4 Absolutely essential, builds trust, allows everyone to participate & explore their passion. PD should model best practices
We encourage Ts to give Ss choice in the classroom, so why would we approach PD without giving choice
How do we empower people to advocate for their learning needs? Not just what to learn but how they want to learn.
, people knowing what's best for themselves? Of what craziness do you speak?! Haha :)
I thought that was the force
A4: Autonomy is important but difficult for some. It should be a condiment, something to be added as desired to a solid framework
PD should never focus on paradigm, but rather school culture and mindset growth - then, design PD around it
feedback component often left out but critical to learn. Love doing it as an admin.
A4: "Ownership" and "autonomy" are essential for effective PD. Has to be what I need & will use.
The model provides us w/an excellent point of reference. Norms & conditions for success.
Pure excitement & passion usually pulls Ts in!
I'm not sure I understand "gradual release"
A4 Autonomy is important/ every Ts has insight to share to collective wisdom We also learn thru modeling & coaching
A4. Also autonomy can be the difference between professional development & professional learning. W/autonomy comes responsibility.
Great Point Ross! https://t.co/1CHjBITQ9Q
A4: Be explicit about being explicit. Too often we don't paint a clear enough picture of what the change should look like.
A4 Admins giving Ts opportunities to choose/develop PD demonstrates trust in their professionalism. Only can benefit S in the end
The passion that is on the inside of you will show on the outside as long as the teacher is willing to learn.~Dr. Jones
Sounds good to me. I'd love to have the time to see others teach, too.
Not quite that simple. Sometimes building relationships and planning well solves behavior problems, sometimes not.
A2/3: would ❤️ to showcase our district talent and coordinate with nearby districts!
A3: PD lesson: Network! You can learn as much talking to fellow educators at lunch & dinner at a conf as you can in formal sessions
I would like to try that too! School or district based. Great idea!
It is important that Ts know they have flexibility. I think sometimes group PD is necessary to foster team growth too
& coaching & mentoring cld help them determine 'their' goal &PD. Cld be viewing another tchr etc https://t.co/l39Hel6w7B
A4) Teahcers need to have a say in their own professional development. They want to be involved in each stage of the process..
agreed we want differentiation for students, why not teachers?
A4. Autonomy in learning process and in learning focus is very important. That's why PDL design must include right audience.
A4 differentiate where possible but some PD like equity & inclusion should be mandatory but different entry points based on Ts exp.
Exactly what I've been reading about in The Global Achievement Gap by Dr. Tony Wagner.
The year I realized that I, not my employer, determined what info, resources & teaching inspiration I wanted & needed was PIVOTAL.
Simple. Stop micromanaging PD. Trust professionals to learn what they value. Give time to share. Create that culture.
It plays out by letting Ts choose a PD day off to pursue/shadow/attend event without judgment
A4B: Autonomy is important in our district, as they are allowing us to count Twitter Chats as PD Hours
"the Force" has a copyright. Spirit doesn't
A3: Time to get up & move to other sessions (or chats, but not this one! ha) when not being pushed. Personalization trumps egos.
Choice Ss may have in the classroom are still centered around a main topic. How they demonstrate knowledge is up to them. Same 4 Ts?
I know there is great teaching/learning happening in my school but I don't get to learn from enough of it.
Trending Topics Now # # # # Will
Right. When isn't the edcamp model appropriate. When is planned PDL a necessity?
A3: anything that is not meaningful to me as an educator. Things that are one size fits all
That is AMAZING! How does that process work?
We have a structure in place to do this continuously!
A4: I'm on Twitter on a Saturday morning: is it because I HAVE to be? People learn best when they are invested. Autonomy is crucial
has its place but within a multi-faceted strategy with structured outcomes. Variety is spice of PD https://t.co/oTTqyLEMXl
a3: I use the "rule of two feet" at any conference. No point sitting through a session that doesn't meet your needs
but really, this represents the broader issues we have in edu: the thought that teachers need to be 'schooled'
A4: Autonomy is HUGE and respect for educators as professional learners.
because you can't "explain future ideas through three ring binders" via
A4) With individualized professional development plans, autonomy is a must.
A4 Every teacher should have a say in their professional development plan - empower teachers as lead learners
Being talked at is not learning. If you can't show me a reason/purpose, just like Ss, I'll turn off. & I want to learn!
A4 Autonomy is import. but we also need to be clear. Provide time for Ts to improve. Also provide ongoing support/coaching.
kids and adults resist being boss managed - Bill Glasser talked abt diff b/t lead vs boss management
Right now we're told what to do. That's demeaning. Imagine if we were out learning constantly intrinsically. Kids see;)

A4: Autonomy is critical. In our district we provide teachers with the time and freedom to improve their craft
A4: Autonomy and PD is equivalent to teaching in the classroom..differentiate, choice, individualized, meaningful promotes learning
How much could I gain & my Ss gain if I was able to see how they learn in their homeroom context?
.A4 autonomy needs to balance with direction. Choices in topic, timing, method balanced w/ district needs/mission/goals
I met yesterday w/ a group of Badger Conference middle school Principals (we meet monthly) I always learn so much from my peers.

A5: Tech/SM/Twitter have been the strongest booster of my ed passion in the last year. I'm sure I won't be the only one to say that
Q5: How has technology and social media played a role in your professional growth?
I think too many see not knowing as vulnerability & weakness. I see it as a strength & opportunity to learn & grow
A4: It's the most important. As a presenter, if I don't have autonomy to let the PD be shaped by learners I'm wasting our time.
Such critical elements! Time/freedom foster agency and empowerment! https://t.co/l1fZt1SQKt
A4: Autonomy is critical. In our district we provide teachers with the time and freedom to improve their craft
A3 Looking forward to & more PD days where passionate educators r coming together to share-twitter coming to life:)
Group PD offers perspective which helps us grow https://t.co/AEQ2ta8DQr
It is important that Ts know they have flexibility. I think sometimes group PD is necessary to foster team growth too
which is why we need to keep sharing positives of it. . Have a great new year!
I'm looking for the questions, but don't see them. I'm new to this
Professional development that includes students
Timeliness and relevance are also critical components as well. Value added professional learning is what I seek.
That would give me greater empathy for my Ss & possibly learn new ways/tools to personalize for them.

A4: I'm on Twitter on a Saturday morning: is it because I HAVE to be? People learn best when they are invested. Autonomy is crucial
True. But, there are times when we don't know what we don't know, and outside forces, more than guidance, are needed!
, what were they afraid of? Consequences? Offending the presenter? Deviating from the norm?
what if Ts never choose to address inequity in their PD plans? What if culturally responsive PD is never an option?
A4: Autonomy is central to our PD - teachers make up their own learning plans and then receive release time
PD and training are not synonyms. I need training to do things, I need PD to figure out what I need training in and why.
You could truly see exactly how to support that learning.
A4: when I feel I have an option I feel more positive about PD days, not forced to sit through something I don't see benefit of

Yesterday I tackled my fear of the back end of WP. Lots of learning! Been refreshing my MBA math...endless...
The more experienced I am, the more self-directed I am in PL...resentful of forced meetings & wasted time.
So important. We can still have autonomy within a topic that will promote learning for all.

well said. it's same for class everyday. I shifted title of "lesson plan" to "student experience" better focus
and for Ts who've been to an , a familiar experience. Easy to learn/jump in
A5: Tech & Social Media has made possible. You learn on your own time & meet educators who share your passion.
If we have schools filled with passionate/excited teachers we will have more schools filled with engaged Ss.
A4: It depends. Are we talking about autonomy re: PL choices or concerning required groups like PLCs?
How often do we ask our sts? I asked for feedback after Design Thinking & PBL units but cld be more often. https://t.co/GipEdzM6a5
Professional development that includes students
a5: Social Media has helped me meet my own PL needs and is on going. Connect with some amazing Edus who I continue to learn with
definitely! If Ss learning is the focus of PD, why not include Ss in the planning process?
A5 answers can be found in less than a 3.457 minutes with social media. Plus you can learn more about glitter
And when trust is an obstacle for us, imagine how are Ss are effected by that each day.
Autonomous PD can serve as powerful learning individuals e.g. EdCamp. Hard to see it as the only PD structure though
Q4: Teacher voices must be involved in the shaping of the overarching vision - where you are headed
A5 it's reduced my carbon footprint & saved me $! Can't afford to fly for PD - Twitter is a good substitute
A5: Technology has made input and help from other educators sooo much easier to access. Helps diminish the loneliness of teaching.
A5: Tech allows us to learn more about events or presenters to make more informed decisions and to participate online
So great. I often wonder if PD hours should be allowed for anything, as long as it changes practice.
Trust is critical between admin and Ts https://t.co/EgbYRuI3ME
A4 Admins giving Ts opportunities to choose/develop PD demonstrates trust in their professionalism. Only can benefit S in the end
Ts need to get into classrooms together...learning at the desks of students, in my humble opinion.
A5 PD and tech? Think blogging, voxer, twitter...I'd say tech is HOW I get most of my PD.
A5: Tech & soc media have allowed me to learn from educators I would otherwise not have known.

A3: School specific PD was much more effective..Ts sharing with Ts where relationships are fostered by learning together
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing.
Sounds great. How can you make it happen in your school?
Educators have an innate desire to learn and grow professionally, unfortunately, PD structure/requirements sometimes get in the way
Maybe when there's a need to share consistent content (state regulation changes, for example)?
What do we want all educators to know & be able to do? is a good ground floor filter.
A4: I think it's huge. I can do PD remotely via GHO, boxer, Twitter. It is also my avenue for learning about new opportunity!

A5. Social media allows you to get information quickly, learn from others experiences, gave new ways to try old things.
A5 Social Media PLNs keep you aware of Ed trends and knowledgeable about new tools. Invaluable!
Yes. District PDL must utilize edcamp format for some learning.
I totally agree, but you may learn amazing things that may not impact your classroom Monday morning
Would options for PD based on a common theme be considered "autonomous PD"?
The personalization factor is important in PD (as it should be in classrooms). Personal engagement and relevance drives commitment.
A5 A year ago I wasn't on Twitter. I have grown so much on here alone. Collaborating, sharing ideas w strangers that share passion
building the relationships and figuring out the quality plan/instruct/reflect can be the challenge.

This is true for me as well! https://t.co/Jb8FgIAGdG
A5: Tech & soc media have allowed me to learn from educators I would otherwise not have known.
For me, that's what autonomy means: you have the choice to explore all that's available until you find it.
I couldn't agree more. We just began a LA cohort which has been so beneficial to my instruction.
Poll: What type of PD do you prefer?
I once taught a class in artisan crafts on bookbinding, 3 types of calligraphy and glass. Solid history!
A5. Social media/tech allows you to reflect & reinvent your teaching, learning, and connections.
I seemed to be getting a little too serious up in here
A5: Technology (SM) has been a tectonic shift for my PD. I can now learn & grow every day, anytime I want. The way it should be.
I would also say when group of learners has identified a shared target for long-term study.
well put! same goes for Ss right?
It's cool to think about how my friendships and connections have grown so much because of conferences and Twitter
A5 Through Twitter I am able to see the amazing things going on in my district and ~ inspired daily!
A5. Twitter has helped me find other enthusiastic educators w/ passion for learning & collaboration. Antidote to bleak ones.

A4 Autonomy is important, but sometimes I don't know what I don't know and need some guidance. https://t.co/9YIaTlYOoA
Q4: How important is autonomy as it relates to professional development?
I am just starting to build a PLN. Any advice or must know tips when starting.
yes! Sometimes I see choice of diff topics so like yoga, equity, arts, tech - now go to one. Ppl usually choose comfort
It's what keeps me going on the tough days!
A5: Twitter alone has put me way ahead of the curve so many times...'new' stuff rolls in and I'm like 😏
I agree with this! This is why autonomy cannot always be available in PD-- any HR director will validate! https://t.co/5y2tQtwzjX
True. But, there are times when we don't know what we don't know, and outside forces, more than guidance, are needed!
A5: Smartest person in the room IS the room. SM increases room size exponentially! Gain ideas, inspiration, resources, etc.
Q4: need teams to plan & lead, differentiation comes in the level in which you choose to lead once we have all chosen a vision
Because of tech/social media, I'm on my way to while on a Twitter chat, all around 8 in the morning.
Especially if the PD is the ED Camp model https://t.co/PMhnataExE
In 2016...PD for school leaders on supporting teachers to be more creative and autonomous! Giving them space to take risks!
The 1st step in offering PD of value is creating a culture where people feel comfortable sharing their perceived shortcomings.
Yes. I often wish that we could count all as long as it led to action.
A5: Tech and social media have played a major impact on my PD since the last half of 2015. All started with going to an Ed meetup
I've gone from learning from/with a few locals to 1000's worldwide thanks to Twitter, Voxer, Skype, & GHO. We should do same 4 Ss!
Q5, my PLN had been priceless. Real people implementing things I'm interested in, helping me learn and grow.
Professional development is a great opportunity to develop teacher leaders and engage practitioner voice
or following out dated "best practices" Also use band aides to address short time, not long term plans
A4: Autonomy when making choices, but collaborative learning (inquiry) with colleagues helps to demystify our practice(s).
A5: It has allowed me to participate in so much more and it is more relevant and "updated".
A5: Tech & social media enabled me to broaden my view of the work we do & the diverse conditions under which we do it.
I prefer individualized PD - and Twitter, I like to choose the conferences I attend
Q5 district facebook to quickly share ideas, articles, perspectives
That a what makes Greg the Yoda of education
Working on it ;) my "school" includes 8 HS, 16 MS, 75 Elementaries. My boss still wants one size fits allll
W/out tech and social media I would be virtually stagnant
a critique of PD that it total T choice is that Ts can remain in bubbles and not explore what is needed to close opportunity gaps.
A5 Without Twitter and Voxer, I would just be average. My PLN pushes me to be better daily. https://t.co/QW2y90zCi6
Q5: How has technology and social media played a role in your professional growth?
Good at times. Not so at others.
A5 COMPLETE game-changer. Living on an island nearly prevented collab & growth until introduced me to Twitter
A5 2016 Hope: Use SM to find, collaborate, share resources/reflection, CR experiences that are working/ Involves people & product

A lot of management over leadership?
It was very out of character.
Twitter has opened up a world of possibilities for all teachers. Made it possible to connect around the world at anytime. Amazing
agreed. When Ts think of themselves or are viewed as independent contractors, real growth is difficult
Q5 Has supercharged my enthusiasm and linked me with outstanding educators world-wide. PD daily.

We do w/ our own chats. Curious how to you do w/ other chats. Any reflection/documentation?
My ELLs gave advice on what they think their classroom teachers should know about them.
Agree, like using Google Form 4collecting PD info from faculty b4 presentation~helps to provide focus on Ts needs
Yes. But that doesn't mean PDL is designed to be meaningless. In my opinion we can't always go edcamp.
poll A: I prefer learning via Twitter, at least initially when making connections. Hands down. cc:
Tech also allow us to find, share, curate learning opportunities like never before. wouldn't be possible w/o tech & SM

A5) Tech and social media continues to help shape my educational practice. I'm inspire by my PLN, my fellow educators.
A5: Voxer has allowed for in-depth conversations on topics of shared interest, great to be part of one of these chats
Lots of districts are moving towards a blended learning model for PD. Anyone have a platform they like best?
A5. Keeps me up-to-date with innovative practices, research, resources + my PLN filters info for me :) They know me now.
After we focus on "the why", we can sort out what (content) & how (pedagogy/design).
Willow started that four years ago!
Having taught in 4 districts, & using tech/soc. media also helped me understand the diverse needs of staffs, not just students.
A5: Huge role! 90% of my pd is done by phone. twitter while standing in line. while making the kids lunches, ect.

Great question. And do we listen? https://t.co/KV6BU42qdF
How do we empower people to advocate for their learning needs? Not just what to learn but how they want to learn.

A3: I will try to avoid either designing or being in learning that looks like the Banking Model described by Paolo Friere
A5: Social media have created a shared culture of learning that's living and breathing globally
A5 Often PTwitter PLNs are not recognized as "official" PD. For me it is in addition to required school/district PD.
It takes those things AND an effective classroom management plan to have consistent success.
definitely worth the read! Started in my classroom too which has been fantastic!
A5: social media great for broadening perspectives, but you need to search for quality info. You get what you put in
how did you do that?! Awesome
A5: With tech PL, I can roll my eyes, grade papers, &/or ignore it altogether without getting in trouble or offending. 😜
Yes :) ...making a connected educator a better educator for Ss https://t.co/tPsPREeAtF
A5: All the twitter chats are a great example of how social media has transformed education and PD. That's why we are here!
A5. Another point for Twitter: Can you beat PD in your PJs? No. No, you can not.
A5 I made a site in '06. Didn't build it until '09. That's when I joined Twitter.Revolutionized my teaching & learning.
A5. It's also helped me see the importance of action-taking in PDL. Chats are a first step (1/2)
A5: Social media = enormous factor in my prof growth. Finding likeminded educators, searching for answers, pushing my thinking
Voxer book study...hmmm...great idea!
Growing you PLN is an amazing transformation of the number of people that you can share and learn with
Ts have been conditioned to see admin/PD as lumbering dinosaurs. Social Media can make that more nimble. https://t.co/TZYrwGlXXh
A5: I enjoy using social media to connect, PD on-demand. You have 10 minutes...what do you want to learn about?
Gotta go early thx for the morning pick me up

Twitter and our class blog have given my students voice and importance. Shows they matter! Connection s with other countries
A5: Social media are not a replacement for conversations and constructive debate, rather an extension of those f2f forums
Twitter App, especially during or
During PDs, I'm constantly using the Camera app or Gdoc. https://t.co/K1cQBWHS8d
Poll: What is your favorite PD app?
absolutely! I hope you are well.
How do you use that knowledge in your practice?
A5: completely changed and inspired me. Twitter and voxer are my faves. Now I connect with Ts worldwide. Totally new perspective!
It's late in Oz-time to call it a night good night & all eds
A5: makes me realize there is so much going on in education I would not have known about; keeps me excited and challenged to learn
A5 Twitter chats have connected w powerful voices. have graciously moderated
Q6: What educational events will you be attending in 2016?
A4 Professional learning must fulfill a need , clear agenda, show respect for participants.
fascinating storytellers will always be a resource! I don't mind either, unless it's a full day of it
A5: Tech tools have certainly enhanced my ability to learn & connect w/others, but I do not consider myself particularly "techie".
Headed to ...Where we first met on that fateful day 3 years ago!
Interesting... Totally agree because there needs to be some collaboration 2 build community. (listening in) https://t.co/H2TmVQC3ru
A4: Autonomy is important but sometimes, you don't know what you don't know. There needs to be exposure to new ideas too.
good point! Learning that leads to action
I'm on the train to EdCampNYC now and heading into the tunnel. Have to jump off chat. Thanks everyone.
Tech has opened innumerable opportunities for personalized PD - social media helps me see what others have done and learned
I get antsy with 4 mins of sit and get. It is like my skin is crawly wit Edcamp
It has to. Otherwise, is it learning?
Suggest, propose, offer to lead, model. It’s a process & a slow one. Baby steps to change the perception.
A5 Social media also great for the fortuitous moment - stumbling across great things you weren't even looking for

EdCampRI next week... Do CT people drive that far, lol?
Time purpose and accountability Ts know what they need to get better allowing Ts autotomy in some PD selection is critical
Providing resources for my classroom teachers, sharing best practice strategies from national experts,...
A4:More so thn autonomy: seeing relevance & value of PD. District initiatives can't always give choice, but SHOULD include that!
and I would not have been able to be to
The first step is in asking and not assuming we know what people need to learn. Listening to staff voice is key.
That's so liberating for them (and us, too)!
twitter really helps with momentum, doesn't it?
YES! MT : A5 Social media also great for the fortuitous moment - stumbling across great things you weren't looking for

Has anyone here used voxer at this level, in a school community? Sounds like a great amplifier for power pd.
Q6 working with the ACTION collaborative in 2016 to support inst innovation
yes! I think we get lost in the initiative and miss the concepts of why...how... https://t.co/An66wmJaRp
PD should never focus on paradigm, but rather school culture and mindset growth - then, design PD around it
Can anyone recommend an online skills diagnostic assessment?
You are not a team because you work together. You are a team because you trust, respect and care for each other.
A6. Most importantly, numerous learning sessions in my own org. Also ASCD16, and number of edcamps. Twitter convos and F2F chats.

SO CRITICAL. https://t.co/cGLx996m0e
Much like our students, our brains need to be actively engaged after about 4 minutes of lecture
agreed. Depends on nature of PD. listening to world renowned expert is valuable tedtalk
actually I like that idea. Might try that at ISTE
I really don't even know what it is. I've heard a lot of T's using it. What's it's main purpose?
I had not seen any info about that edcamp!

it's a bunch of educators coming together to share. No agenda. What can you share? What do you need? Mashup follows.
We need as teachers one moment/person to excite/ engage us to be or create moments that motivate and engage our Ss. Fire to learn
I find that one odd myself -- after you figure it out, it's one of the fastest/easiest ways to connect
Right. So, one way is to provide everyone with skills to follow their own pathways, rather than lead them there.
I agree. Using Twitter has impacted my ability to support my classroom teachers as an ESL teacher dramatically.
