Welcome to #xplap! Introduce yourself and leave a gif that shows a hobby of yours.
Standard answer format, but each Q has a side quest that can be answered using SQ.
✨I'm Kimberly, and I teach 7th grade ELA! Favorite hobby is of course spending Tuesday nights with the #XPLAP Crew! So excited for @MrsCford_tweets to be hosting tonight! ❤️✨
Hi #xplap crew! Welcome! I’m Stefanie Crawford, an instructional technology coach from Illinois, and a passionate gamified educator. And I actually enjoy knitting.
Hey #xplap, Dwight here from the beautiful Adirondack Mountains where I teach 7th grade social studies. One of my hobbies includes making YouTube videos, and today I dropped a new one on why I spend two days staring at pennies with students. https://t.co/0HfCs3UyAU
A4 Start small and only do what you can. Remember the important things in life. I know I missed tonight’s #teachermyth and #xplap however I wanted to weigh in on this Q being so important spend time on what truly matters in life: faith, family, and friends
Q4: What advice do you have for others who are trying to give all they can afford to give? What advice do you need to remember when you start to hit your limits? #TeacherMyth
SA 1: I have so many ideas of what I want my side quests to look like, but I just can't get it to paper. I would envision something where they will go outside, and possibly use the skills they learn in the classroom to help them solve their quest. #xplap
A1: Ss came up with the idea of creating how-to sites for something important to them. Could be for sports, video games, dance, drawing, so many options. #xplap
A1: This year I am moving to a sidequest choice board. https://t.co/I7I9NPGBDC As long as it ties to a unit (any unit) they have a choice on what to do. It's been really cool. #XPLAP
A1: One of my first ones is to have Ss design a new wing to the LOC that will house all our work cataloging & preserving natural & historic sites to help create the @NatlParkService in our game world of 1916. #xplap
A1: One of my favs is called Copy Cat... Students have to create a replica of a magazine but must be fake article on front cover. You must make me believe that Time did this one. https://t.co/T8CZ5jUFng#XPLAP
Still learning. It's my 1st year to gamify the whole year. My 2nd graders are fairy tale detectives. Sidequest: Make a wanted poster for Goldilocks. Mystery XP- depends on the details! https://t.co/4skfzRJZcP#XPLAP
A1: I do side quests differently. They're actually classwork/ homework, but as a student astutely pointed out today, "They can't be called side quests if they're not optional." Couldn't argue with that 😂 #XPLAP
A1 my side quests honor interests that I see in students. Each year, I find myself tailoring for students. Love that I can post in google classroom just to that individual! #xplap
I struggled to get my side quests up at first and realized I just needed to launch them a little later in the year. It took the pressure off of me, and they released and built well after that! #xplap
Super cool @MarianaGSerrato I like what you have setup here. I don't think it is for everyone but it really help many teachers. Thanks for sharing. #XPLAP

A1 i am working on providing different experiences in both narrative and product development for the students. Wrote a bit here #xplaphttps://t.co/Q8OCY0TN8z
A1: I just started gamifying my class this year so haven’t done much w/ sidequests yet. But, I asked if any Ss wanted to create a “house” flag for their class and I was amazed at how many were willing to spend their free time being creative for science class! ❤️❤️#xplap
A1 im working more on gamifying my school library. But I would love to include @Flipgrid into more side quests to help me leave more about them than just what I can gather in our 40 minutes a week. #xplap
A1 We do a minecraft side quest where students build one of the body systems. Also, origin story side quests tell you a lot about your students. #XPLAP
a1) I have some fairly basic ones, that pretty much came from the #xplap book. Now I'm trying to introduce more specific ones such as they can choose a theme song for their superhero. Trying to get a wide variety of activities so that one of them appeals to each person.

Katie I would love to see how you gameify in the library. I took your VR/AR session at @AASL in November. Excited to #xplap along side another school librarian
Q2: If you designed your own #IdeaFlood for your students, what are three themes that you could use for them as side quests and still build relationships with your learners? #xplap
A1
✨🔭✨🔭✨🔭✨
CREATE

EXPLORE!
Love the idea of student
created side quests!
✨🔭✨🔭✨🔭✨

A1: This year I am moving to a sidequest choice board. https://t.co/I7I9NPGBDC As long as it ties to a unit (any unit) they have a choice on what to do. It's been really cool. #XPLAP
A2: school (shows attitudes towards and likes and dislikes), forms of entertainment (shows whether they prefer screens, pages, etc. and gives possible connections for later lessons), family (aside from the obvious benefits, Ss sense of humor could really come through here) #xplap
If you’re not familiar with #IdeaFlood they’re #sketchnotes that flood the paper with images and text about a certain theme. Check out @HeckAwesome YouTube for monthly idea flood challenges. Loved using them as side quests. #xplap
SQ 2: love the use of #sketchnotes in the classroom and even for me in my own PD. Here's a student exampletud when we studied utopias, Communism, and population policies. #xplap
Q2. Idea floods in my library for connections to our county’s portrait of a graduate standards to reflect on themselves. Would be a great artifact to talk about in their reflections for #capstonexperience#xplap lots of ideas for guided inquiry design and interrelationships
A2 I'm sure a Fortnite ideaflood would be well received. Ideafloods around favorite series -books, shows, movies. Hobby and family themes could also be good. #XPLAP
A2: IDEAFLOOD Topics to learn and engage:
- What makes you, you?
- What parts of History stand out to you?
- What do you do when you are not here in my class?
#XPLAP
Here is the map to our kingdom Marchen. The detective agencies are from different parts of the map (except for the Forgotten Realm- it's still a mystery) https://t.co/y9OMF2HU08#XPLAP
When I taught science I could have in idea flood of how the kids saw science in their world beyond school. Now as a coach it could be cool to have an idea flood where the Ts share how their learners are using digital learning in innovative ways in their classroom. #XPLAP
Q2: If you designed your own #IdeaFlood for your students, what are three themes that you could use for them as side quests and still build relationships with your learners? #xplap

#XPLAP
A2: #IdeaFlood of anything & everything they know about your given subject... forget a pre-test, start with a flood... then re-examine a flood again in the spring. #xplap
Here is one of their detective badges- these are just for fun and the game but they had a blast designing them to fit their part of the kingdom. #xplap
A2:
My students are #Sketchnote pros thanks to @HeckAwesome's awesome YouTube videos! We used them for an "All About Myselfie" get-to-know-you activity, and I learned so much that could be incorporated into side quests too! ✨#XPLAP
A3: Maybe a side quest deals in making a map/giving directions (could be ss, math, ELA) and the item is a compass that allows the owner to get guidance (maybe once or twice) on a difficult challenge. Once it's used up, it's gone. #xplap
SQ2: I don't know if it counts as a sketch note but I had kids drawing what they were visualizing while we read our novel and I had a couple of kids each hour do theirs on the front board. #xplap
Q3. For me I could give my students an extra book to check out on top of their normal limit if they can complete a side quest. There is a lot of excitement for extra books in the elementary library. #xplap
A2: I’m new to #ideaflood, but not #sketchnotes! Seems like a super beneficial way to simplify an idea or draw connections. I think I need to add that while I take notes in class tomorrow! #xplap
Q2: If you designed your own #IdeaFlood for your students, what are three themes that you could use for them as side quests and still build relationships with your learners? #xplap
A3: If it's a #IdeaFlood#SketchNote, give the student a special marker or something. Nothing wrong with adding a bit of physical tchotchkes into your game! #xplap
a3) A student came up with a med kit idea to get rid of the penalty for missing a day of class or being late. (Ss get "paid" in my game for coming to class on time) #xplap
SA 3: I was thinking of making badges with perks on them that's good for a certain amount of time. Discounts on buying packs of cards or something. #xplap
A3: My theme this year is pirates so the kids got a "loot" bag for completing one part of a sidequest, and a gold coin for completing the whole thing, NO idea what it will be used for though...#xplap
A3- my students are doing a unit on the 5 themes of geography and I put up a side quest for each theme. Each theme earns a power crystal and when you earn all 5 it turns into a power gauntlet #xplap
A2: -Do humans form groups for the same reasons animals do? What are your groups?
That is all I can think of right now. We are investigating group behavior in animals right now #xplap
A3: My kids favorite item from a side quest was a "speed bump". It let them add a few points-bump up (based on how impressive their quest was) to an assessment. #XPLAP
"med" as in medical, and not really. it's just a special item they can earn/buy. generally they'll have to do side quests to earn enough money to buy items like it. #xplap
Their fate will be determined by chance... dice, cards, challenge etc. They may find themselves on a island, or even aboard a new ship, the options are endless, but perfect incentive to pursue side quests! ✨#XPLAP
A3 I'm going to go with an Volcanic Eruption card that reduces points from 3 random groups in a guild competition. We have just started talking volcanoes w study of rocks. #xplap

A3 Opposite desires of an item... I would like the chance to improve or hurt another clan. (Don't really like how the second one makes me sound... but I get competitive. ) #xplap
I do this all the time. It I call them brain barfs. Students like it. They get a minute to “barf” on their group’s whiteboard and then they rotate to another group’s board to barf on that board, which is reviewing a different topic. Ss love the challenge. #xplap
They were also drawing in their journals while I read, so I don't think it was too distracting. It gave some of them a starting point when they got stuck. #xplap
I have a phaser to freeze someone from answering a question. I also have a shield to stop the phaser. I'm going to have spys in my second game this year that could steal resources. #xplap
Thanks all for a great #xplap tonight... so much fun as always. It's been a full week already... I'm looking forward to a nice sleep tonight. It's been a busy & filled school year so far. Love it!
