Ready for Q1!
When our classrooms are full of joy & passion, there is a certain magic that electrifies the air. How do you bring joy & passion into your classroom?
#AKEDCHAT
A1: the passion and joy starts with me. I meet my students at the door and welcome them to math class. I get excited every time we start a new lesson and let my math nerdiness shine through! 🤓 #akedchat
A1- believe in everybody elf your kids and make sure you students know it. Bring your passions into the classroom. Make it a fun and ezciting place to be! #akedchat
A1: Ss choose to be in my class so I make extra effort to making lessons that are exciting. That being said, I leaned that a smile goes a long way and that being yourself is the best thing you can be. #akedchat
A1: just being excited. I know that on the days I am not really feeling it the kids are not excited either. It starts with us. Even just sharing funny stories or a great book. #AKEDCHAT

Q2!
It's never too late to create magical beginnings in our classrooms.
What are some ways you can sprinkle a little magic at the beginning of a new unit or quarter to generate renewed excitement and curiosity about the content?
#AKEDCHAT
A1 I love doing “Good Things” every Monday! Fist bumps at the door, fun videos to start class like from talent shows! I enjoy it so students will too! #AKEDCHAT
A2: Love building in anticipation and excitement at the beginning of a unit or lesson. Here's a blog post on how I launched my Amazing Race game for our semester learning International Cuisine. https://t.co/MSMFQ8QugE#AKEDCHAT
A1 Invite children to pose questions & brainstorm ideas for figuring them out. Inquire deeply into passions & interests. Read compelling nonfiction & fiction. Talk all the time! #akedchat
A2: I haven’t tried this yet but it’s in my list to cross off before the end of the year, escape classroom to introduce a lesson. I like to use the cartoon corners from NCTM middle school journal throughout the year to get kids problem solving and laughing. #akedchat
A2: Have Ss go outside and find math. Ex: when I taught symmetry, I had Ss go outside to find line and rotational symmetry, then we would investigate further afterwards. #akedchat
A1 I bring joy and passion to my art room by providing as much choice as possible. I believe when kids can make choices based on their passions joy is a byproduct. #AKEDCHAT

I’m super excited for you to share about place based education later this month on #akedchat love that you have that in your classroom, your graduate studies, & your life :)
A2: I haven’t tried this yet but it’s in my list to cross off before the end of the year, escape classroom to introduce a lesson. I like to use the cartoon corners from NCTM middle school journal throughout the year to get kids problem solving and laughing. #akedchat
A2: Dovetailing from the dad’s jokes thing, I also fancy myself as a crooner. I would always seize the opportunity to kick off a new unit with some dulcet tones. #akedchat
Q3:
A magical classroom is bursting with imagination and creativity.
What opportunities do you give students to tap into their imagination and express themselves in creative ways?
#AKEDCHAT
So many people believe we have to teach everything. What I've learned though is that by focusing on one topic deeply, collaboratively, I can scaffold even my K's into beginning research. I'm teaching them HOW to learn, not just what to learn. #akedchat
A3: At the end of each unit I have Ss take a culinary method they learn and make it without a recipe. Then...they turn it into something all their own and blow the judging panels mind! They always amaze!!
#AKEDCHAT
A2. Getting into character and/or voices. Ss still referencing the time I dressed up as "that weird detective guy" who showed up to start our mystery unit and ask to hear my awful irish/british/new Yorker accent(s) #AKEDCHAT
A3- PBL learning is a great way. We were doing financial literacy. Students created a product, took out a “bank loan”. Advertised their product and sold it. They created some pretty amazing products and raised money for new play ground equipment. They were 9 years old #akedchat
A2: Give students an opportunity to share what they know on a Google Classroom Discussion, invite a guest speaker into the classroom, show an example of a final project, or watch an engaging video. #akedchat
A3: Can be tough at times for students to see the creativity in math. I try and give students choice in how they show me what they know. I’ve just started using @Seesaw for portfolios and kids are loving getting to record their thinking and draw/label their work #akedchat
Wow! 21 mins late to a full chat!! Tammy Morris wearing many hats: independent contractor as a 21st Century Learning Specialist providing professional learning opportunities; School Improvement Coach, #AkPLN Engagement Manager. Lover of education! #akedchat

I'm always amazed at what Ss accomplish & create when they work together as a team.
What are some ways that you could have your Ss collaborate in magical ways?
#AKEDCHAT
A4: My Ss work as a team on a daily basis in their kitchens. Each brings a special dynamic to their team and the collaboration, creativity, & bonding that happens as they learn and grow is astounding! #AKEDCHAT
Reach out if you ever have questions. I’ll never say that my art room runs perfectly but I love teaching art through choice. Feel it adds tons of energy and possibility to the room. Teaches creativity and helps students explore and develop their individual voice. #akedchat
#akedchat A3: A very easy and simple way to encourage students to be imaginative and creative is to give them time to write stories in a weekly journal and allow them to read their stories aloud to their classmates.
A4: I often have students work in partners or pairs. I like doing scavenger hunts in the library. Students love to compete for prizes as well. #akedchat
A4: I read Refugee with my whole class and after opened up the option for a team response or individual it was cool seeing groups creativity in responding to the Q. #akedchat

A4: I've used so much collaboration in my class that I don't remember a time when Ss DIDN'T collaborate.
Specifically, I always love seeing them work on collaborative Google Slides. I strongly believe we are better together. #akedchat
A4 I Love discussion and academic conversation! I use “speed dating” style discussion and @Flipgrid to get student voices out! Both are great to hear personal reflections! #AKEDCHAT
Thank you! This is my first year teaching art as an elective (in a room without a sink, no less!). I'm kind of fumbling my way through it, but it's on the schedule next year again. I love learning from those farther along on the journey. Onward and upward! #akedchat
A4 Part of what I love about offering choice in my art room is the collaborations that occur between students. Creativity can occur in many different ways, allowing students to explore those ways provides a sense of possibility which promotes engagement and learning. #AKEDCHAT
Sounds awesome! I've just discovered Twitter & all you inspiring people since Nov; so, the tech is something I'm learning every day! When we wonder, I'm afraid our wonderings & questions are much more conversational, through class logs, child writings and sketchings... #akedchat
In reply to
@spiralEDU, @tishrich, @AlaskaTeacher, @padlet
A4: popping in! My HS Ss collab w/ @hmarrs24 3rd graders on #kindness & no reason you HS Eng can’t collab on writing with @LeachTeach4 or any one, any where. #AKEDCHAT
A5: I love the game Catan because their is an element of strategy, chance, collaboration. I love Snake Oil because of the laughter and creativity.
#AKEDCHAT

A5: Hmmm... favorite game. Tough question. Not as much time for them. But love Apple's to Apples... so games that let kids express own identities and play off the community/relationships they've built #AKEDCHAT
A6: I bring in guest judges at the end of each unit for our MasterChef Challenge, at our Amazing Race Pitstops, and Regional Challenges in our Food Truck Race. To see the Ss shine & learning becoming real & meaningful...priceless! #tlap#xplap#akedchat
A6: Brought in Community members to paint faces as my HS Ss explored the power of masks in Lord of the Flies. Brought in CosPlay friend to be the Red Death in Poe's Mask of the Red Death so Ss could "live" the theme that you can't escape death. #AKEDchat

#akedchat A6: When addressing service opportunities, bring in Rotary Club members to discuss their contributions. How can a class of students participate in the same? Or what ideas will be generated for their own service project?
A4 For the first time in over 25 yrs, I've watched kids collaborate on words & illustrations in their books. Originally inspired by @jerrypallotta, their pieces have truly shown us the potential of thoughtful collaborations by partners. #akedchat
Q7
Bringing your unique personality & passion to the classroom, creates a special magic all your own.
How do you bring "YOU" into the classroom? #akedchat
A2: Ive been making @animoto videos to kickoff units/projects. Not all the time but enough. Super easy. Last one I made in my hotel room with pics from the hotel.
https://t.co/LUpA3Rh3jC#akedchat
By giving students variance in how they demonstrate what they know. Accepting multiple means of representation allows students to creatively express knowledge and meaning. #akedchat

A7: I have my letterman jacket from Eielson hanging up, I have my b-ball practice jerseys displayed, and a quilt a parent made me hung up. I talk with my students about weekend plans, summer trips, it’s about building relationships. #akedchat
A7: I model risk taking and let them see me fail at times and how I recover. I let my quirky, silly self shine through and share my personal interests and goals. I laugh often, cry occasionally...let them see the real me.
#akedchat
A7- if you do this make sure you know who you are. We sometimes fall into the traps of deciding who we are based on others opinion. Know who you areas know what you like. Own it. And bring that passion into your classroom. #akedchat
#akedchat A7: Share the active moments of your life! When I was expecting my first grandchild, kids knew I had my cellphone on (almost 16 years ago!). They were so excited if the phone rang!
A7: Just being honest and being an open book. Building relationships with those short conversations that show that you are human and you have a life outside of teaching too. #akedchat
Actually, it's lucky ME! Kids learn through so much. Their organizational skills in that library-redesign were phenomenal. Their science engagements have been profound & have pushed us in compelling ways. And I have the joy & privilege of learning alongside them! #akedchat
Thanks for letting me sit in on #AKEDCHAT but getting late here. Awesome responses everyone and great job (of course) @tishrich on leading. Enjoy your week all.

Learning how to let go of control has been really important for me. Trusting children and their ideas has exponentially changed the rest of us. You can imagine how excited the others were to try to create something just as wonderful! #akedchat
