Darla Williams Health and PE teacher Eugene Field and Webster checking in on my __ birthday (can you guess how young I am?) #hint4u31yearsofteachingsofar#wcedchat
#wcedchat Just talk to the students, find out what they enjoy, what their interests are....when you take the time to ask just about their day, they will know we truly care. And laugh at your own mistakes, shows we are human too :)
A1. We will begin relationship-building on the first day; attempts will be made to greet Ss at the door & immediately confirm they are where they need to be. Later, we will pursue conversations, plus we'll cover procedures, as structure can make one feel safe. #wcedchat
A1 I plan to try many of the inclusion activities from the Adaptive Schools training throughout the year to build and maintain relationships with and between students #wcedchat
A1 listening to Ss and engaging in their interests, making sure they feel loved every day, saying sorry when you make mistakes #wcedchat I also found an anchor chart I plan on doing that asks the Ss how they feel loved!
A1: I will build relationships in the beginning of the year with some team building activities and introduction games. Throughout the year, I will model and expect respect of myself, each other, and our classroom. #wcedchat
A1 Start of the school year is great time to develop habit of "slinging dopamine" i.e. put smiles on faces of Ss and Ts...high fives and smiles can get us started #wcedchat
A1: I like to ask the students questions about likes and dislikes. It gives me a chance to find ways to encourage them, as well as what things I can avoid. #wcedchat
A1. This is challenging in my position. However, the key is be visible and make the students interact with you. I must make a point to leave the management items for later and get to schools where my kids are. #wcedchat
A1 I plan to try many of the inclusion activities from the Adaptive Schools training throughout the year to build and maintain relationships with and between students #wcedchat
A1: Personal welcomes at the door with high fives, elbows, pinky hugs etc.. Every day starts with that and our "Good morning" circle. I make purposeful mistakes during calendar and have them help me through it to show that it's okay to make mistakes. #TheListGoesOn#wcedchat
A1: I will listen to Ss and engage in their interests, making sure they feel loved and listened to! Having a smile and kind words go a long way! #wcedchat

A2. Couple of ideas for authentic learning: have Ss come up with strategies to address real community issues they face; also a foundation activity could be giving them math exercises with the answers, and have them figure out the process for getting that answer. #wcedchat
A2 Create functional art piece for holding items useful to elderly person in a nursing home.Think about the small space they live in, and what they would put in the art piece. Take pic of you delivering to elderly in nursing home for extra credit #wcedchat
A2: Don't be afraid to derail and pounce on those teachable moments. Sometimes, those are more meaningful than any of our best planned lessons. #wcedchat
A2: Authentic learning engages students in lessons that apply to their current lives and future hopes. If they can see significance, they can engage more effectively. #wcedchat
A2: Problem based learning is one way to engage students in authentic learning. Students pick a real world issue they care about and then research and problem solving it across the curriculum. Even students that struggle can succeed and have issues they care about. #wcedchat
I saw you do that last year Mrs. W. always enjoyed walking by your classroom or coming in for a lesson. You always had your Ss engaged in fun and learning activiites! Kuddos to you #wcedchat
A2 I like the idea of asking students about finding solutions to problems in their lives or the school or even the world! Little minds can come up with some big ideas and become engaged in authentic learning #wcedchat
A1: I always like to do team building activities with the students. I also go to every classroom on the first day of school and do an introductory lesson. That way when I start pulling for fluency, they feel more comfortable! #wcedchat
A3. In building up thinking skills, I like for the students to come up with three reasons for why they decide on something. My 3 reasons for this is 1- it makes them think: 2- it solidifies their stance; 3- this is great for essay pre-writing! #wcedchat
A3 modeling critical thinking skills to build a foundation for K Ss that can then be expanded upon throughout the school year by facilitating questions that lead to deeper understanding #wcedchat
A3: Is special education, students are often lack the confidence to think critically. By building their confidence, they can start to work toward independent critical thinking. #wcedchat
A3 Give students tasks (and the time needed) that they know enough to solve but have not explicitly been taught the process of how to solve, aka those tasks that require them to analyze and synthesize information in order to come to a feasible solution. #wcedchat
A3:Teach Stds skills about the process of creating. Model thought process of critical thinking for them, think out loud. Ask higher order questions, etc. as they listen to your thought process.
#wcedchat
A3:
Critical thinking skills- One strategy is turning around any problem students bring to you with a simple, “What can you do about that?” or “How can you fix that?” Also, using compare and contrast as well as identifying reliable sources to cross-reference info #wcedchat
A3 Teaching students to take. Step back and ask a few questions will engage them in critical thinking. What are the facts? Who benefits from this? What are some other potential impacts? What might be some other solutions? #wcedchat
A3 Often, we need to let Ss struggle with a problem to solve or circumstance to overcome...in spite of what we see on TV, our problems are rarely solved in 60 minutes #wcedchat
A4: Students in resource classes can collaborate within the learning community by sharing information from their different homerooms, other service providers, and life experiences to help peers gain perspective and background. They love sharing what they know! #wcedchat
A4 When working at the whiteboards, students can see each other's work. If they are stuck, they can see who to ask. If they finish early, they can see who to help. The goal is that every student walks away understanding the problem. #wcedchat
A4 In art class, stds are consistently sharing ideas with each other. I hear a lot of, "oh it would be cool if you added this or tried that,". I also allow Sped stds collaborate with a Reged stds on some projects #wcedchat
A4 Ss work together during stations, centers, and lessons to better understand what we are learning. Some Ss may learn better from a peer explanation rather than my teaching collaboration gives them that opportunity #wcedchat
A4: Student collaboration mostly happens during small group activities, in my classroom. I also collaborate with students when creating their goals with them. #wcedchat
A4 Collaboration among Ss makes me buzz w/ excitement because it’s a powerful way to increase language in #ELLs Hearing Ss consult with each other about their questions, problems, ideas is evidence of community & critical thinking. Ss collaborate in the best classrooms #wcedchat
A4 Some of my favorite strategies in the classroom (or meeting room) include Sort Cards, Small Fires, Stir the Classroom, First Turn Last Turn...#wcedchat
A4: We LOVE using elbow partners, small fires, picnic tables etc. We break the ice by finding fun and educational ways to decide who talks first (e.g. Longest hair/shortest kid, Most syllables goes first, add the vowels in your first/last name. +/- # goes first). #wcedchat
Damn, missing another Webb City chat. I wish all my teacher friends a great 2018-2019 school year. Miss the kids but not the other. Just know that dreams do come true over the rainbow. #wcedchat
A5 by giving my K Ss multiple options during work stations and having options for where they do their work allows for choice in the classroom. Also by using @Seesaw allows for choice in what they want to share with their family during the school day! #wcedchat
A5 Some days students get to pick to have the lesson live with the teacher or to watch it via video. Students who like interaction can choose live, while those who prefer to go another pace (faster or slower) can watch the same content via video. #wcedchat
A5: Art class is all about choice. I have added a couple of Choice based lesson, Stds choose the Medium and solution for the project, as long as they meet the standard, they choose how they get to a successful end. #wcedchat
A3: Ss can have choice in by providing parameters for content, but open choice for product. Ss could also choose content but give same product depending on Ts goals. I introduce Thinglink as an option bc it's very visual and let's you see how a Ss brain organizes info #wcedchat
A6 I plan to build inclusion activities into my course throughout the entire year in order to not only build relationships from the start but to help maintain them. #wcedchat
A6 I like the idea of choice boards and I plan to be more intentional in helping my Ss build relationships by providing many opportunities to work with different peers #wcedchat
