Hi, Jessica, SLP and PATINS Specialist, it depends who you ask if I'm organized or not. I still don't know where 1/2 of my tupperware went, but I love digital tools to keep me organized. #PatinsIcam
Hi Everyone! Sandi Smith here.
Accessible content authoring, Apple & Chrome accessibility & integration, secondary age SLD & Secondary Age Transition specialist! #PatinsIcam
A1: To be organized, in my mind, is to know what you have, know what you need, and be prepared for things that can happen. That's hard across all domains, all the time, hence why they are skills to be built and it's not something you are, it's something you do #PatinsIcam
A1: Students can feel a teacher's ability to be organized or the inability. It's imperative to have a consistent organized routine in the classroom #PatinsIcam
A2: For Ss who do not know what is coming next, where things are, etc can FEEL and SOUND like chaos for them which can create behaviors that will throw them off the whole day #PatinsIcam It's like spinning out of control
A2: If Organization is a deficit, you are always late, letting people down, feeling like you stick out. It is a hard way to move through a day. #PatinsIcam
A4: For Organization I love My Homework, Skitch (for visuals) and a myriad of calendars (I use Google Calendar). Can Plan takes you through a task analysis of how to do something and Popplet and Ideament really help kids organize. #PatinsIcam
A4: I also like to use Popplet and Ideament as a tool to map out feelings and “what went wrong/right” in a day so a student can really visualize solutions, etc. A great teacher in Indiana taught me that technique! #PatinsIcam
A3: It affects nearly all aspects of what you want to accomplish and be successful doing. Being late, not getting anything substantial done, scattered which can create friction with others #PatinsIcam
A4: EF skills do not exist in a bubble by themselves. Work on language skills, which improve work memory and attention. Provide visual supports and strategies in all instruction. Teach students the vocabulary and semantics of using a calendar #PatinsIcam
A4: Talk to the digital assistant on your phone and ask for reminders. Google Keep for lists. Reminders on Google Calendar will float from day to day until they are completed. #PatinsIcam
A5: I like Doodle for setting up meetings with several folks—the feature of having everyone’s input in one visual saves a lot of wading through an email thread #PatinsIcam
Organization skills have to be taught & we can't set this up for Ss. You have to invest time upfront in order for Ss to understand the WHY and how #PatinsIcam

A6: 3d bar code on our freezer linked to a document that keeps inventory of our meat that we buy in bulk from a local farmer. Hooks in strategic transition areas for things going in and out of the house #PatinsIcam
A5: I do a whole webinar on these types of apps for EF, but The ones I mentioned are for organization, planning and priority, time management, working memory...#PatinsIcam
a6: give myself TIME to organize. When I first started things piled up quickly, and I still catch myself wanting to devote time to people rather than paper (I'm not alone!) but the "stuff" needs attention too #PatinsIcam
Apps & tools will not be useful, meaningful or carried thru without Ss having an understanding of the "cause & effect" of disorganization...the why. I feel that for some Ss, social stories are a good tool #PatinsIcam
A6: I am the post it note queen! I like to crumple them up and toss them when I have completed a task. I also use google calendar every day as well as setting the alarm OBNOXIOUSLY many many times a day! #PatinsIcam
A6: My own anxiety of being late or letting someone down due to my own lack of organization pretty much keeps me moving forward. Is that low tech or high tech? ha ha #PatinsIcam
A6: Also, does it need to be done that way? My students helped write their own progress reports. Before I was spending 4-7 hours writing them alone, but when I included my Ss as part of instruction, it made it meaningful. Why didn't I do that before?! #PatinsIcam
A7: The process that works for you is as different as each student. I offer ideas and help pick the ones that best match a students needs and abilities. #PatinsIcam
A7: I think that the challenge at times is to NOT force Ss to utilize what works for you, but listening and teaching them to use what works for THEM. #PatinsIcam
I couldn't agree with this more. We ALL have our own system and Ss are no different in that regard. We shouldn't teach them OUR way of how we organize & then force that but the actual skill itself...if that makes sense. Listening...YES. #PatinsIcam
A8: I guess I usually adapt...USUALLY. Sometimes I am not sure if it does not work OR if I am resistant to change. Familiarity and taking time to use/explore is really important to me. #PatinsIcam
A9: That's a good question because while teaching/modeling organization...we also have to align that with teaching the skill of flexibility #PatinsIcam
A8: I try it. So long as I know what I have, what I need, and I'm prepared, it's okay. Everyone has to learn how to adapt to new paperwork/systems, etc. #PatinsIcam
A9: Just like any other AT device, TRIALS are important. It is also important to give enough time to a new strategy to see if it will eventually work. #PatinsIcam
A8: odd fact: there's always a blip of the uptick of retirements in most industries when the systems change (like medicaid billing) We need to learn to be flexible! #PatinsIcam
