The goal of #wvedchat is to provide educators an opportunity to connect, share, and learn from others by engaging in conversations around issues and topics in education.
#wvedchat A1: probably 6 years ago I was using Celly, which was cool then bc it allowed for 2-way text msg based communication in safe, secure environment. Celly did it before Remind.
#wvedchat A1 Love seeing "the phone" in responses. The phone is your friend... until it starts ringing! Use that phone! Way too neglected in many classrooms.
Always encouraging Ts to call. Sometimes you have to take a deep breath and make those calls, but if you do the positive ones to start, it makes the more difficult ones easier if they become necessary. #wvedchat

There really isn't a better form than phone or face to face...although in todays world of work and parent, digital communication is pretty vital #wvedchat
#wvedchat It's an easy way to increase the positive touches. The SAMS or COSCO theory. "Touch a person 7 times and they're more likely to come back." A positive phone call is a service and a 'touch'.
A2: #wvedchat It depends on what the message is…. I like FB or Twitter to share what is going on in schools with people. Emails get to me quickest and I am able to respond quickly. Phone calls are best for confidential matters.
A2: As a band director, @remindhq was my best friend, so I would go digital for basic communication, for more important personal things, Friday nigh at the edge of the Football Field was a great place to communicate. #wvedchat
A2: With the small group I have @RemindHQ has been very effective. There is the opportunity for face to face after our meetings, but most Ps ask questions via Remind. My situation is different since I don’t have a class of kids. #wvedchat
#wvedchat I'm still a big fan of the weekly Tweets (hashtag) curated by @Storify with link shared across Facebook. There are just more people on that medium. Visibility is huge if you're strategic about time, reshares, graphics.
This might sound a little strange, but I love to make a call, and the parent to be a little worried for a second (I don't really enjoy this part of it), and I get to say, "No, it's good!". #wvedchat

#wvedchat A4: I wrote handwritten notes to parents last year and delivered them to parents at ball games. Message was simple: I love getting the opportunity to influence your kid. You're doing a great job. Thank you!
A3: #wvedchat I mostly use twitter to share what I see when I visit schools. Today was an awesome day at the elementary Robotics competition. Kids and parents like seeing what is going on.
I feel like when I make these calls, no one listens, but honestly I have no idea if they listen or not. I just think multiple means of messaging hits everyone at their preferred way of getting information. #wvedchat
I have a 3 to 1 call ratio
Even though each negative call does have some positive, I make sure to make AT LEAST 1,nothing but positive call, for every 3 negative #wvedchat
A3: #wvedchat A lot of our curriculum specialists and Learning 2020 team tweet when they are in schools too. Did anyone see the Star Wars mechanical arm that a Capital student made with 3D printer? Rosie Rhodes tweeted it.
A3: I’ve share news about events that I think Ps would like on @Seesaw. Also, pictures of the kids. Use @RemindHQ for after school meeting notices and reminders for the tech team to wear their team shirt. Use @twitter for school events or class happenings #wvedchat
Mega Smiling beakers! Capital HS & Adam Drake’s physics and engineering student , Alex McMillian for designing, engineering, & printing a 3D robotic hand to assist a young man!
AWESOME!
A3: on Facebook, I share our stories - good news. I posted today about our students at the county SS fair, last week was Hour of Code posts. I share on my personal FB, because I do accept friend requests from parents - it's a small town, and I decided no avoiding it #wvedchat
I share classroom activities, fun lessons, and student work on School Twitter. I also host a monthly Twitter chat #rhsspanchat with my students. Parents can see that their students actually communicate in Spanish #wvedchat
A4: Persistence! Where there is a will there is a way! I called other numbers on the emergency card to make sure I had parents’ correct phone numbers. #wvedchat
A4: I’m fortunate that all 10 of my after school kids parents are connected with Remind. I do have one student who lives with mom part time and dad part time. Mom is not on Remind, but dad is great to make sure she is informed. #WVEdChat
I have done several over the years. Looking back, it probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do in some cases. Always ended up with a story to tell… #wvedchat
A4 I think I communicate quite well. I just don’t like initiating the one on one because I don’t do the positive phone call. Need to do the positive! #wvedchat
When my son was in third grade his teacher went to each of the kids homes. She sat on the floor of my living room and played N64 with him. That showed me how much she cared about those students. #wvedchat

A5: Always find a positive! Always. No question, finish all communications with a positive, end your day with a positive. Go to sleep thinking of a positive, #wvedchat
A5: I think you state facts rather than make it a negative. You let the parent know you are contacting them because you want to work with them to solve the issue.
A negative can become a positive if you work together. #wvedchat
@stowers_melissa Just wanted to stop in and say hi and that I’m proud of you! Trying to get the kiddos in bed!! Looks like you guys are having a great chat! #wvedchat
A6: Teachers can’t communicate with parents too much. Keep them in the loop. You may be a caring professional, but it’s personal for parents! #WVedChat
In previous years, I kept a well maintained website...all information that was needed daily was there, all other special information went out as needed... #wvedchat
They do indeed like to find the information, they don't always need a one on one... I found 25% of my parents just need the information, not someone #wvedchat
A6 There’s definitely some growth opportunities for me here. Especially when it comes to parent communication. I need to communicate far more often. #wvedchat
I have some room for improvement too! I am better this year since I’ve read #kidsdeserveit it has help me understand how important it is to communicate with parents. #wvedchat
