Hi Jason, lifelong WV resident teacher/TIS, & regional mgr.
Julie LMS from Wirt Co HS. Hello . I'll be in and out tonight
Student voice is so, so important.
Q1: What challenges are present in your school that you believe are unique to West Virginia or Appalachia and its culture?
Kevin Sears - Jackson County Schools Tech Coach, TIS, Coordinator
I think it will help move other edus to join too, knowing that student voice is welcomed.
Hey Julie! Happy evening :)
Gr8 seeing new & familiar faces tonight in
You have a profile pic now!
Glad to have ya! You ROCK!
Hey does anyone have the chat set up on ?
A1: Appalachian culture and poverty are key players in the education of our students and we must start with an understanding.
A1: SLOOOWWW CHANGE more than others and why we are behind
A1: Good q...huge lack of student connectivity outside of the classroom via internet & if they do, it's terrible
Agree. Perhaps because of how spread out & isolated our pockets of innovation are in WV. https://t.co/VV97Bw9KN3
A1: SLOOOWWW CHANGE more than others and why we are behind
I couldn't agree more. I wonder how Ts can better understand this...get an accurate picture of modern Appalachia
yes! Culture is so important!
A1: I agree that poverty is a huge challenge and agree with on slow change. Especially concerning tech.
True. Can be a challenge. Ways to combat this? https://t.co/Ukree4k23f
A1: SLOOOWWW CHANGE more than others and why we are behind
A1: Economic challenges. Few jobs n so many WV communities for Ss seeking professional path post-HS.
A1: The mountains make it difficult for kids to stay connected on the bus and at home.
A1 slow 2change, the place of religion, the idea of "place" ie not being above your raising, the lack of knowing what is out there
And Frontier is horrible and the only service for most in this county
Great point. Being connected is so powerful...disadvantage is major
A1) Children coming from "working poor" families. Also, young children raising younger brothers and sisters. So sad.
Connectivity equality is a problem. https://t.co/HQo7FXS33N
A1: The mountains make it difficult for kids to stay connected on the bus and at home.
Nailed it https://t.co/NkfBq2hh4F
A1: Appalachian culture and poverty are key players in the education of our students and we must start with an understanding.
very true and a lack of desire to change
Good point! Geographic challenges do exist. Especially now in"snow season". https://t.co/frJXSCEIVI
A1: The mountains make it difficult for kids to stay connected on the bus and at home.
I set up transcript 4 the hour.
A1: Keep on top of what is happening nationally and petition our state gov.
A1: Isolation & poverty. Perspectives are inward facing & not always connected to outside of WV.
You can't do the Blooms stuff until you take care of the Maslow stuff
Yes! Place has so many connotations. https://t.co/xIiAcVVec4
A1 slow 2change, the place of religion, the idea of "place" ie not being above your raising, the lack of knowing what is out there
A1: Like many of you -- poverty, deeply ingrained culture and attitudes towards education & progress...a true challenge
A1: Too often the edu system & grad requirements do not empower non-college seeking Ss to pursue their passions.
southern coalfields are being decimated. How can education help reverse this course?
I listened to a presentation at Model School Conference about a school district putting wifi on their buses
Yes! Very inward and somewhat afraid of change.
A1: A true lack of understanding of poverty. Classrooms built upon compliance that only reaches Ss of higher economic families.
Isn't Kanawha doing that? I know it was some county in WV
Starting with open minds first...
A1) Lack of basic vocabulary and speaking/listening skills due to lack of interaction with other children and environments
I like this as long as they park the buses around the district to be used all night not just on the ride https://t.co/MQ7R2kKTRk
I listened to a presentation at Model School Conference about a school district putting wifi on their buses
A1: lack of cultural diversity, economic challenges, and geographical obstacles discourage students from setting higher goals
A1: What day does your WalMart toss out their unsold food?
Our Ss lack experiences beyond their country border at times. Thx 4 sharing this! https://t.co/UASJwBwWDq
A1 slow 2change, the place of religion, the idea of "place" ie not being above your raising, the lack of knowing what is out there
Love this question & avenue of thinking
I'm not sure. I would be interested in learning about it tho!
The digital infrastructure of WV is atrocious!
If only our busses operated in decent service areas.
A2: Stop treating teachers the way they do first so that the good ones want to stick around
agreed! The district I listened to also got business to fund it by putting a small ad on the bus.
Q1: I have seen many kids who have decided their future is only as bright as those of their parents. The lack support, for sure.
. Hi, Coleen VANNOY here-KCS elem. curriculum specialist
sadly it looks like we will have to be the change we need & it will be a gut check moment 4 many tchrs
My friend has some gr8 histry of partnering w/ local businesses to provide free wifi for Ss.
Especially as this guy keeps showing up in my feed! https://t.co/i8CFnfJTht
Good point! Geographic challenges do exist. Especially now in"snow season". https://t.co/frJXSCEIVI
A1: The mountains make it difficult for kids to stay connected on the bus and at home.
Yes, so many Ss rarely leave WV.
parents/caregivers need to read, read, read to kids but are often too stressed to do so https://t.co/pRBj10cOJF
A1) Lack of basic vocabulary and speaking/listening skills due to lack of interaction with other children and environments
So true! I taught in NYC. Poverty has similar implications nationwide, but isolation much greater here. https://t.co/AJqn0oRbkV
Our Ss lack experiences beyond their country border at times. Thx 4 sharing this! https://t.co/UASJwBwWDq
A1 slow 2change, the place of religion, the idea of "place" ie not being above your raising, the lack of knowing what is out there
A2: Total overhaul of edu lrng based on seat time. Had a gr8 convo w/ Sunday abt pursuing change.
A2: Allocate funds to pay Ts for participating in options. Embrace the value & quality of those lrng opps.
also need to work with communities to get free wifi like Charleston's East End did
and isolation breads narrow minded leading and teaching https://t.co/kkDClOYs45
So true! I taught in NYC. Poverty has similar implications nationwide, but isolation much greater here. https://t.co/AJqn0oRbkV
Our Ss lack experiences beyond their country border at times. Thx 4 sharing this! https://t.co/UASJwBwWDq
A1 slow 2change, the place of religion, the idea of "place" ie not being above your raising, the lack of knowing what is out there
. A.1 I think the biggest challenge is the fixed mindset about edu. in our state.
Our budget issues are so bad, the county won't approve out of county training at this time
A2: Taking ownership for our deficiencies and quit making excuses for why we can't succeed. More doing and less talking about it.
A2: From It is educational malpractice to limit Ss experiences by what we are unwilling to learn.
A2) Get away from manuals, teach what we know is best & developmentally appropriate for Ss. Bring real world experiences to them.
Had convo recently w/ a friend complaining about Ss missing school for travel- I wish my Ss could travel! https://t.co/ltkAS6yrqN
Yes, so many Ss rarely leave WV.
Why do we have to learn in a building? Gr8 idea https://t.co/RL54wN9xqO
A2: Total overhaul of edu lrng based on seat time. Had a gr8 convo w/ Sunday abt pursuing change.
That might work in a city but not in Lincoln Co.
student voice is truly crucial to this. I am doing my doc research on student agency. Research supports this
& We wn't get mor Ts 2 embrace this type of lrng if they stll hav to engag n 18 hrs of seat time tht prducs lil chnge
Q3 coming up fast. Look for it in about a min.
need admins from state level to school level to understand this and stop telling teachers they have to use manual
A2: TECHNOLOGY! Proper use of tech can mitigate budget deficients & encourage greater engagement among Ss.
A2 Stop dwelling on the past & push to the future! Our Ss deserve the opportunity to thrive.
AMEN!!! Preach on! Teach the kids and not the curriculum!
A2: Teachers need appropriate, challenging PD and support to implement novel experiences for Ss
Until they cut the TIS in the county that helps Ts to learn how to implement and provides the resources/assistance
A2: we have GOT to start embracing teachers that are bright and creative and do not teach like the past. Stop being afraid of diff
A2: We need to focus on how individual kids learn and not how we like to teach. Individualized learning for all.
Thank you!!! https://t.co/4ULKqJXS1d
A2 Stop dwelling on the past & push to the future! Our Ss deserve the opportunity to thrive.
A2: make schools, Ss, Ts and learning a priority in the state! It is getting lower each year - do more with less and less
YES!!! This needs to stop! Good curriculum can't replace good teaching!
Q3: Despite what many across the nation think, Appalachia is a richly diverse place. How does your school address diversity?
research is showing tech can have negative effects. We need to know why? Use the correct tool for correct job
Bingo. Very little PD is offered during year outside of this in our district
WE ALL MAKE THE DIFFERENCE! WE make the CHANGE!
Yes! Every kid has their own road map to learning. Teacher has to be a master navigator!
completely agree. I also think we need to get the PD we need, not what some else thinks we need
Every Ss can learn! We need more educators like https://t.co/bifo7YvNJT
A2: We need to focus on how individual kids learn and not how we like to teach. Individualized learning for all.
A.2 Teachers need respected by all & need higher pay. We're not missionaries. This would be a start.
BOOM https://t.co/DtCCQ9nxcr
A2: make schools, Ss, Ts and learning a priority in the state! It is getting lower each year - do more with less and less
Hamp Co is looking to cut dental/vision to cover budget issues. We are lowest paid county already
We have this awesome diversity club that is helping address this issue!
A3 We do very little school wide.
A3: As a member of our Diversity Club, we address this by finding dynamic/interactive ways to educate students on ALL types of...
A3: Very little is down. Some schools may do a WV Day, but other than that...
Yup. https://t.co/NC6R4q9mhP
A.2 Teachers need respected by all & need higher pay. We're not missionaries. This would be a start.
AWESOME! https://t.co/rSfxuJ5Um3
A3: As a member of our Diversity Club, we address this by finding dynamic/interactive ways to educate students on ALL types of...
It's hard to focus w/all the WV snow day alerts coming in.
Absolutely. So, better conversation and communication with the higher ups, too?
A2: Move the needle! Are our efforts to move the needle in classrooms being effective? Why this? https://t.co/zyK7V0ZGTO
A3: i work in one of the most diverse schools in the state and there are many, many issues. But the biggest issue is lack of vision
A2: Learn how to look at data. We really aren't as low as media wants us to believe...
A3: Focus on relationships. When Ss are treated with respect and love then handling diversity is easier.
A2 student engagement through use of technology & instructional practices that cause students to think. Keep it relevant
this doesn't show in the feed without the #
Differentiated PD that is ongoing https://t.co/vnDtfYZqAW
completely agree. I also think we need to get the PD we need, not what some else thinks we need
My county just cut/transferred 77 people. My position was eliminated
A3: Diversity is MORE than just race! If we value individuals, then we value diversity!
A2 Less data charts.More figuring out who the students are &what gets them going. Ex: Even non-readers <3 Read What You Want Day.
A3: Most of my Ss have limited exposure to WV's diversity, so we have to engage the community members help bridge the gap.
A3: ..diversity, not just cultural. This month we are hosting a series of Black History Month presentations during lunch
yes i think so but too many teachers are afraid 2speak up or don't think their voice is valued. That needs 2 change
Well said https://t.co/DIOl15xiKu
A3: Diversity is MORE than just race! If we value individuals, then we value diversity!
I hear more and more teachers saying this is a need! https://t.co/SWmkUpui2g
Differentiated PD that is ongoing https://t.co/vnDtfYZqAW
completely agree. I also think we need to get the PD we need, not what some else thinks we need
Hello everyone! Gregg, an teacher with a passion for tech integration.
A3: Not related to WV but when my class needs dwn time, I put on shows so my Ss get prspective of those facng HUGE challngs.
A3: i think we also need to think about what diversity is. Are you only defining it by race? What about family types, SES, culture?
From a student... https://t.co/SPfBGQLfjK
A2 Less data charts.More figuring out who the students are &what gets them going. Ex: Even non-readers <3 Read What You Want Day.
So much yes...or stuck feeling like they're living in a success-free zone
A3: I can't change my Ss world, but I can try to bring the world to them thru community members, field trips, & technology!
A3 Diversity is limited in race, but wide in other factors. Think SES, beliefs, culture.
Splitting attention between and tonight
glad to have you! Enjoyed listening to your ideas at Model Schools
My man is rocking the world!
Welcome! Plenty of time left to chat!
yes. I travel a great deal. I need different PD than someone who maybe cannot go to conferences, etc
A3: Diversity means allowing for multiple solutions to the problems encountered both in and out of the classroom.
With budget cuts, this will be difficult.
I don't like the term "race" we are one - HUMAN. There r diff cultures though. I think that is a better def.
Q4: How can we promote more community/parent involvement? & does geographic location play a role in this?
YES! Teaching kids how to love reading is key!
...except when they cut TIS/TSS positions first due to budget
great start. Now make sure it isn't just during one month 😊
Some really wonderful ideas & educators here tonight!
A3: Accepting who we are and moving on: Do What you can, Where you are at, With what you have!
A3. Our school this year has its own Diversity Club & has traveled to Intermediate Schools to educate younger generations.
More the reason why schl leaders need to rethink PD time & not squander ANY opps for Ts to lrn.
yes i have attended a conference and witnessed just that. but need to do so any way
Yes! Building a community of learners celebrates diversity!
A2: Throw common core in the trash.
Agree - back to where are our priorities for the future…. thing that make you go humm https://t.co/sjY8lbaG9J
...except when they cut TIS/TSS positions first due to budget
Not feeling well. Gotta go. Great discussion everyone. Will catch up in the archives. Goodnight.
A4: Reach out to families as partners, not adversaries. And never stop offering the hand.
will think on that. I think to negate race is to negate both positive and negative implications it brings
A4: I think building a brand for your school helps parents get more involved. Social media is a big help! Meet them where they are
A4 Tough 1! Involvement is better in community schools, but wanes in consolidated. Reach out 2 parents, w/good news & ask for help
I agree!, and have build a sense of pride, community, and ownership within it!
Going to throw out Q5 as well--we've already mentioned topic.
I've got to big up who is our Diversity Club sponsor. She's rocking it at Spring Mills & empowering students.
Q5: How do socioeconomic challenges present obstacles? How do you & your school create success despite these challenges?
A4: Shift the mindset of edus. Many dnt know why Ps & Community shld be involved.
A4: Geographic location plays a huge role in parent involvement. Lower educated areas have less involvement. How to get more? idk
A4: Title I & PTO at my elem school do great with this. Events for parents based on needs, and fun nights for family as well
Thanks for joining us, Amber! Feel better!
A4: involve parents and interested members of the community in chats like this!
That's awesome! We have a culture around the worlds club at my school. Ss love learning abt places in the world
We do it with a school based community TV channel and social media (FB&Twitter)
A4. Offer helpful advice for parents to be involved. Some may stay away due to ignorance of what to do and who to reach out to.
I love this idea of a "brand" for your school. So true! https://t.co/MuVqXeMFb0
A4: I think building a brand for your school helps parents get more involved. Social media is a big help! Meet them where they are
McCormick ROCKS this! Get the parents in the school - great way! https://t.co/bp4eKNMQHr
We do it with a school based community TV channel and social media (FB&Twitter)
I'm not seeing Q4 yet I see answers!
A4: Celebrate teachers' strengths by posting on social media to a district hashtag.
A4: be the model in the community and use the tools the parents use. Make the effort, meet people half way
A5: As a HS math T, I face those challenges. Teaching 6-7th grade stndrds but giving a grade for math 1. System problem.
A4: Yes, geo. impacts it, but creative approaches & tech can allow us to think outside the box towards reaching parents/community
A5: stop using SES as a crutch or reason kids cannot do. Education is the only way out. Understand poverty but dont let it rule
A5: Students come to school with needs that need taken care of first as part of well-being before they are receptive to learning
A5: Poverty, and generational poverty, set up challenges...but each challenge will, if given the opportunity, allow you to grow...
AGREE! We teacher Students - not content! https://t.co/3VHcafxNeW
A5: Students come to school with needs that need taken care of first as part of well-being before they are receptive to learning
A5, pt 2: ES created a list of kids that might need extra attention to build relationships with. Really neat
A5: Low SES provides many obstacles, but offers opportunities to reach out to community & organizations. It takes a village...
A5 cont: and expand yourself in order to reach our students. It comes back to relationships each and every time.
It's part of the reason why I'm so active here, FB, & Yammer. I want to shape my own brand.
I think my connection is the issue.
I wonder if adult education or continuing education classes taught by Ts or Ss would help? That would be so awesome
Just reach out, good point!
Yes! Love this! We are teaching Ss into poverty. Empower Ss out of it, don't love them into it!
A5 Many kids genuinely not have the resources at home. Teachers at our school often apply for grants to provide for those in need.
A4: I moved from 8th grade to a 9th grade course at HS this yr. Met with loads of Ps during schl day lst yr. This yr, met with 1.
A5: We work with local churches to get snack packs for struggling students
Great point! Relationships - what everything is built on! https://t.co/OA8hT1asWO
A5 cont: and expand yourself in order to reach our students. It comes back to relationships each and every time.
You ladies are inspiring. https://t.co/UiOsm1QyTf
Yes! Love this! We are teaching Ss into poverty. Empower Ss out of it, don't love them into it!
is not keeping up with the convo tonight!
Social media allows schools to come to them. Creative mindsets can allow schools to reach parents in new ways!
crosses over into our focus tonight Check it out 2
Change the culture! How many Ts at ur schl cheer when the toughest stdnt gets suspended?
i see the "loving them into" waaay too much. You said it very well!!
I use FB groups for my clubs to keep up with (most) parents and alert them of changes & such. Saves paper too!
perfect example of parents who assume that starting high school means a student is ready to be independent
THANKS!! We are all stronger together 😊
It doesn't hurt to have a social worker on staff in your counselor's office to run a food bank and look out 4 kids.
A4: Teachers, communities, & their leaders must be the models in disadvantaged SES areas.
A4: Each schl needs a handful of Ts committed to shrng the lrng exprncs of schl across SM. Most FB/Twitter feeds r sports scores.
Yea definitely. I think that's part of the issue.
Q6:Do your school or district promote a “college going” mindset? Share successful methods for creating a college going culture.
Plus ready to make decisions on career choice when you have ask to do anything.
Yes! I do that too.FB is where my Ss parents are. We must connect to parents in real, meaningful ways
A6: if your school and/or county has GEAR UP! That is successful! all schools should have!
Q6: Does your school promote a “college going” mindset? Share successful methods to create a college going culture.
A6: MS has advisory lessons at times and they use a website that helps them prepare for potential career paths and colleges
A6: our school 100% encourages college education, but pushes for in-state schools and community/ technical colleges
Q6 Good Q! My goal is for Ss to be productive in society. How is up to them - college/CTE both good options.
How many Ts in this chat can thnk of those Ts who would cheer? Hmmm. https://t.co/vZsWr6XtCX
There is so much truth in that statement.
I have seen bulletin bds. that show where the teachers went to college & kindergarten rooms that say..Class of 2027, etc.
A6: i have an issue with "college going" ideology. Not every kid is right for college. Stop throwing out vo-tech education
A6: I'd like to see WV adopt a "success" mindset-and that means MORE than just a 4 year degree!
A6. Guidance counselors meeting one on one w/ each senior to discuss their future. Holding FAFSA workshops. College Fairs.
A6 Pt 2: And again, budget cuts sometimes want to cut votech programs. Our building trades is under fire
Yes-there is no expiration date on learning.
Throwing Q7 out in a minute so we can end on a high note...☺️
A6: I feel our county pushes for college but I think tech-schools should also be pushed. Tech ed will be HUGE in the near future
absolutely & defining what success looks like for individual Ss and encouraging them to keep reaching
Yes! Local churches are angels. Ask and you will receive! When I need more ppl to help w/ Ss, I go to them!
A6: I saw stdnt created posters at Wirt Primary Center. Posters included Ss dreams & college choice. Cool to see from elem Ss.
A6: Our counselors host a series of college/career-readiness presentations for all grade levels, along w/ lots of scholarship help
You're looking at the new sponsor for LCHS, and it's a bit slow 4 the 1st yr, but we are making headway.
same here. 100% & the only way they get out is if i do more than just the text book and more than feel sorry 4 them
A6: I have to make a plug for . AVID is an incredible program and I've seen it work. It would be a perfect fit in WV
They have Gear-Up in the county! https://t.co/Ee02noG93B
A6: I saw stdnt created posters at Wirt Primary Center. Posters included Ss dreams & college choice. Cool to see from elem Ss.
A6: I need to utilize Hangout/Skype more often to bring professional & blue collar workers into my classroom more often.
Q7: How do you hope to "be the change" you wish to see in your school or district? How do we make WV stronger through education?
Firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, policemen-all can do w/o degrees. Retail, food service-move up in management-$$$! ALL w/o college!
and that is soo wrong. Welders make a great salary for example
You can't teach their mind if their bellies are hungry. Ts have to teach & reach all Ss needs, esp their basic ones!
Yes. The T had a hearing. He has quite a few masters in his trades and others in various journeyman stages.
A6: my kid's HS has a fantastic engineering and computer science program as well as IB. Wish CTE was in building 2 build w/ those
Agree - I teach students. Not tech or content. https://t.co/3iuRayLry9
You can't teach their mind if their bellies are hungry. Ts have to teach & reach all Ss needs, esp their basic ones!
A7: I'm just going to be me. Putting kids first. Hopefully, I'll do my part to cause some waves.
A7: I want to try new things in my classroom and share my successes and failures with whoever will listen. Think outside the box.
A7: I am leaving at year's end, but I have worked hard to leave behind a legacy of what a TIS should be/do, going above & beyond
A6: We have an excellent GEAR UP person that promotes post HS training & education based on stdnts strengths.
Again I say-teach a growth mindset. To teachers, prin., parents & most of all to students. It gives them hope.
A7: Teach like ur hair is one fire. Reach out to communities members & strive to bring the world to ur Ss! We am their ADVOCATES
A7, Pt 2: I had a hearing b/f BOE & told what they were losing. They noted my passion and drive, but that doesn't pay my salary :(
you are brave to do so. Many do not have that, we need to help them be brave but it is hard
A7: Cont collaborating w/ smrtr minds. Exposng myself to what is better. Schl-Dstrct doesnt provide this. https://t.co/WxyIJsldOI
A7 If we make kids #1, then change will happen. I strive to leave the world better than when i entered.
"Hair on fire!" Love it! https://t.co/PHJwggwc25
A7: Teach like ur hair is one fire. Reach out to communities members & strive to bring the world to ur Ss! We am their ADVOCATES
A7: I'm Debbie Downer. WV has to value education 4 real change. I'm tired of swimming upstream & doing more with less.
A7: Believe in kids, love them, do right, work harder than you ever thought possible, maintain hope and some idealism
A7: As a student, I hope to challenge others to enjoy learning for their own benefit, not for a test score or a perfect GPA
Yes! https://t.co/wJusFopjRL
A7 If we make kids #1, then change will happen. I strive to leave the world better than when i entered.
A7 pt2 This chat demonstrates that Ts in WV choose to make that change.
A7: i keep pushing.2many do not like it or r afraid of me, but i only want our schools 2be better. Keep fighting our kids need it
A6: We hve Wall of Dreams w/ Ss pic w/ career goal in the hallway. Thru career unit, Ss r empwered 2 dream beynd circumstances
Those giving of their own time to push, grow, reflect, and share need some kind of affirmation! https://t.co/otWUARK87B
A7 pt2 This chat demonstrates that Ts in WV choose to make that change.
