A1: During the season, Monday is heavy scheme install day/walk thru day, Tuesday’s is more of the focus for fundamentals. During spring it’s more fundamentals than scheme. #txhsfbchat
A1) Depends on how many/if any wrinkles we’re putting in that week. Typically try to do a walk thru with the OL before practice to go over scheme. We do have a specific period for blitz pickup everyday separate from Indy time working pass pro. #txhsfbchat
A1: Truthfully it changes every year depending on the experience of the "Team" last year we spent 2/3 of practice time on fundamentals & technique. Our kids were incredible young in terms of experience most playing for 1st time. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: In season, really not much. I'd say 20 minutes a week for indy skills. The rest of the time during indy is spent working plays and learning the opponent...really makes spring and fall camp extremely important to get our skills up to speed #TXHSFBCHAT
Work fundamentals everyday and build the scheme into it. Figure out what you want to do and then teach kids how to do to it.
Perfection in the little things #TXHSFBCHAT
A1 Continued on our State Title & really good teams we still spent at least 1/3 or slightly more to Fundamentals & Technique . Monday was heavy with them & Tuesday & Wednesday 20 Minute Indo Periods #TXHSFBCHAT
#TXHSFBCHAT I’ve always liked showing them the big picture, rep the fundamentals to make the big picture look good, then practice the big picture together. Big->Small->Big
A1: We did too much time with Team periods. We will spend more time with Indy periods this fall, working our fundys along with scheme by position. Going into year 2 should help also. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: With coaching WRs, fundamental techniques and route timing with QBs is more important than scheme installation, so I spend most time with that. I try to cover the nuances of releases and separation vs various looks we will get that week for our concepts. #TXHSFBCHAT
A1- Depends what part of the year we are in. Probably 50/50 at the start. As the season progresses we do less indy. I think this year I might try to keep an equal balance of indy and scheme. Instead of cutting indy, try and cut from both portions. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Our Head Coach makes the practice schedule but we staff meet everyday before practice to go over and make adjustments as needed and talk about what we are doing in all 3 phases for that practice. #txhsfbchat
A2: Head coach makes the practice plan on Sunday for each day. Sends it out via Google Docs, Coordinators edit/plan their time, and coaches add their indy. #TXHSFBCHAT
Our best years of coaching had the staff lay out the overall practice plan together and then position coaches could break down their periods into the needed drills, coordinators could script and we got better.#TXHSFBCHAT
A2: My first two season as an HC we put together a rough plan of what practice needed to look like, or what we needed to emphasize. Then I sent out the final scripts, coaches filled in their Indy periods. This season at a new school, I put together scripts. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) Our head coach talks to the coordinators finds out what they need each practice. Offensively the Head Coach and OC script out all parts of the offensive practice. #TXHSFBCHAT
Exactly we are a Veer Option Team & Multiple Defense playing rural football. Our success is based a lot on our ability to execute the fundamentals of Veer Blocking & Controlling Gaps on D etc #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Together as a staff on Sunday evening of that week. We use prior plans and we will modify based on injuries, special needs for the week, and areas of concern/improvement. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2- The head coach plans the st team portion and the offense. I plan the defense. I ask the other coaches for input on the practice schedule, but we don't plan it together in a meeting or anything. I know what I have scripted and what looks I want from the scout team. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2) Pretty much everyone has input on how to plan out practice but obviously the HC has a certain structure he likes to stick to and OC/DC have more say. #txhsfbchat
A2: Our HC plans the practice periods with input from the coordinators, and flexibility for assistants to change things up during individual and some group times. It's important to give coaches ownership in their part of practice #TXHSFBCHAT
A2 practice scripts and drawings like Hudl make Scout team easier. I still remember drawing up multiple sets of plays on index cards and color coding them for scout team! #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: I'm the HFC & we debrief after practice for about 15 to 20 minutes, then after dinner I'll type it up & send to them for tweaks all has to be complete before 10:00 PM so it can be posted and emailed to all players first thing in AM #TXHSFBCHAT

A2 we plan practices on Sunday once game plan is complete. We meet after each practice to adjust if needed. Coordinators must have scripts turned in for print and distribution by 8am daily. #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: Our coordinators plan our practice. We defensively give input to the DC when we meet on Sundays and decide what to work on schematically and technique wise. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3 I try to keep the lecture to a minimum. I like to try and multi-task drills when possible. Adding a catch into a footwork drill. Routes run with distractions. Finishing a catch drill through the blaster or gauntlet #TXHSFBCHAT
A3- Lecture little to none. That is what pre and post practice meeting are for. Reps, reps, reps. Learn by doing, not by some old coach giving a dissertation the entire period. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: Curious to see the answers for this. We were all hands on and “lecture.” As an assistant we did have time we would spend 10-15 min watching film. That would depend on practice set up. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: I draw up the blocking sheets for text/visual learners. Also combo lecture/visual with part of indy for the OL. Post game is film/visual. The rest is kinesthetic with an occasional visual example by me or our other OL coach. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3 we just started bringing our end zone camera to film practice at the end of the year. Would be nice to be able to use that film to help teach...once I am off #teamfreeagent#TXHSFBCHAT
Everybody has different learning styles. Not all football players are kinesthetic learners. They may be able to perform the skill, but how they learn it may be different...differentiation can make a huge impact! #TXHSFBCHAT
A3) Indy time is all about providing context for when/how to apply appropriate skills based on different schemes so ideally we are putting them in those situations through movement. Could be 1/2 speed to full speed depending on player comfort with particular scheme. #txhsfbchat
I always give the why. This is the Y generation. I will say we are doing this drill because...
If you know your why, then you know your what.#TXHSFBCHAT
Okay your right someone out there has a diagram of everything we are doing from drills to plays - LOL we keep the notebooks in our rigs on our field #TXHSFBCHAT
Nice! So important to continue the application of drill/technical work to the scheme. How else can we expect to see it being performed in the game? #TXHSFBCHAT
Everybody has different learning styles. Not all football players are kinesthetic learners. They may be able to perform the skill, but how they learn it may be different...differentiation can make a huge impact! #TXHSFBCHAT
Gives you way more credibility with the kids. They know why they are doing a drill, the importance, the planning involved, and are able to visualize the game situation it fits in. #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: I have moved away from the "learning styles" movement because recent research has debunked much of it. I focus more on Hattie's research on surface-level learning, deeper learning, and transfer, in addition to things like Teacher Clarity and Credibility #TXHSFBCHAT
A1: typically We try to work in scheme with fundamentals. Runs vs what we see on film. And work all fronts in pass pro. Killing 2 birds with one stone. Everyday! #TXHSFBCHAT
A4:
Move as fast as you can against bags whenever possible! Be very productive with your time and make kids go full speed all the time.
Quality vs. Quantity!
#TXHSFBCHAT
A4 that has been tough. Coupled with down numbers (2 years ago we started the season with 14 on Varsity, this year our senior class was 4 deep and only 1 kid played all 4 years. Our school is about 485 kids) it has been a problem for us. #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: Make the most out of the reps that you have!
Quantity vs. Quality
Do a lot vs bags whenever you can and always try to make sure you have the best looks whenever possible.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A4: For all of our non-senior players we do a Wednesday Night Raw, which is a short scrimmage where the seniors do the coaching and our coaches officiate. We get the chains out, use a play clock, and call penalties. Idea I got from @andylambertSNU in college. #Txhsfbchat
This right here. Study-Learn-Teach-Apply
Create the playbook, make templates, create cut-ups, teach off the film, rep in Indy period, apply to team sessions, play on game night, review the game film.
Be a ball coach! #TXHSFBCHAT
A2: more with O and D separate. HC gives us a template and we plug and play as an O staff with what we need. Certain periods like inside/ skelly/ pass pro are set times #TXHSFBCHAT
A4: We don't do a lot of full go. Most team and group segments are to thud. We may have 10-20 minutes a week of full go, tackle to the ground action. Our most competitive segment, 2 minute drill, is to thud, but our guys are practicing game speed #TXHSFBCHAT
A4 what are some ways you have been successful maintains high level of focus on bags? It always seems to bog down and not be as productive as it needs to be.#TXHSFBCHAT
Q5: How do you plan for quality reps for the sub-varsity players? What would you say your percentage of reps your sub-varsity players get in your scheme compared to your varsity? #TXHSFBCHAT
A3: All in a day. Lecture and visual during meetings. Visual again and slightly kinesthetic pre-practice. And hammer it home during practice. No lectures during practice! Coach on the fly...teach off film! #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: Really for us it’s more our 2’s. We try to get backups or guys that would be next up for a certain position at least 3-4 reps in a 10 rep session. #txhsfbchat
a5: Sub Varsity gets about 40% of the reps in practice. We try to run as much of the opponent stuff in current terms to try to make it as the same as possible.
#TXHSFBCHAT
A5: Are whole squad 9 through 12 is around 30 to 32- LOL everyone is getting real reps. #RuralHSFootball#TXHSFBCHAT we usually have to scale some kids back on reps.
Q5: How do you plan for quality reps for the sub-varsity players? What would you say your percentage of reps your sub-varsity players get in your scheme compared to your varsity? #TXHSFBCHAT
A5 Coming from a program that has had to practiceJV and Varsity together to get decent reps. We aimed for a 50/50 split of time or reps. Usually ended up 67/33 for the Varsity. We give the JV the best look possible minus any true physical mismatch #TXHSFBCHAT
A5: We try to get them in the mix throughout practice. We’ll mix in 1s/2s on offense and defense instead of just going straight 1s vs 2s. For the guys not in that mix they will get most of their reps Wednesday night. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5- The 2s get equal reps. Below that, those players may only get reps in 7v7 or inside if we are thin. Most 3rd team and below only get scout team duty outside of indy. #TXHSFBCHAT
A5 we also see that period as a place to get Varsity 2’s some good work or cross training positions. Let the JV see a tougher Scout O or D on Monday/Tuesday and they will kick@$$ on game day! #TXHSFBCHAT
Outstanding chat! Great job with each question!
Thank you to our awesome sponsor @justplayfb! Check out the playbook made for you, My Just Play ->https://t.co/pGzPKnDb3t#TXHSFBCHAT
A5: we had 18 OL this year. All got reps. 5 plays 5 plays 3 plays. During team some 2s and 3s made up scout team. Scout cards but worded to our terminology. #TXHSFBCHAT
Q5: How do you plan for quality reps for the sub-varsity players? What would you say your percentage of reps your sub-varsity players get in your scheme compared to your varsity? #TXHSFBCHAT
