Hello fellow #ohedchat chatters! Jarrod from Marysville. HS social studies teacher, now w/ state of Ohio. @OhioState grad, @ohiodominican grad student.
Evening #ohedchat - Meredith joining from SW Florida - I LOVE learning with all of these students tonight!! HOW EXCITING to have them in the chat!! Please follow me and reach out if I can ever help you with anything!
A1: personal goals in reading and writing. Letting them decide how to share their reading and writing. Offering so many choices, sometimes it’s overwhelming. #ohedchat
A1: I promote voice and choice in my classroom by giving instructional choice to my students. I give them a list of tasks to complete and allow them to choose which they want to complete first. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A1 It is important to ask open ended questions to get the students involved! Allowing many opportunities for students is also a great way to have them voice their opinions and make their own decisions! #ohedchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
A1: I feel that it is very important for students to feel they have a voice and choices but they must be controlled choices. A way to promote this could be just giving students small choices like what color paper to use, or wether they use a pen or pencil. #ohedchat#barbersclass
A1: If I were a teacher I would try to promote voice and choice in my classroom by creating a safe environment where students had opportunities for discussion, and choices in how they do their work in the class. #ohedchat
A1: Discuss w/ Ss what you want them to learn but allow them to decide how to show they learned it. When a Ss says “I’d like to do this”, give them the opportunity. Don’t box them in. #ohedchat
I also believe that voice is key. I think it is really important to let the students know that their voices are being heard and you care about what they have to say #ohedchat
A1: tech tools make it easy to give students choice of process and product. Show me what you know, in the best way you can. Be creative! Entertain me! Must value personalization not industrialization #ohedchat
A1: I like to provide times where students can share as well as make decisions on assignments in class. Their voice and opinion counts. I just like to guide them in a direction to help #ohedchat
A1: I allow my student to pick what what they want to start their day off doing, I always have at least 2 options for them to pick from allowing them to feel like their voice is being heard. #ohedchat
A1: I feel as though it is very important students have a voice and choice in the classroom so therefore, giving children options and giving children a chance to solve some of their own problems, before teachers intervene, is important. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
I would promote voice and choice by giving my students the opportunity to have a saying in how they complete their tasks for the day! @barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
A1: I love to invite students to share their ideas of process or product. It's so exciting when their idea is better than any options I thought of, and they fly with it! #ohedchat
A1: By promoting choice, students may be more inclined to learn and by allowing them to voice their opinions and share stories in the classroom can allow the rest of the class to learn from their experiences! @barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
I love the idea of open ended questions. I often tell my Ss that answers backed up by evidence are the right ones, and that there's no one answer. Good response! #ohedchat

@KelseySchu2, @TebnerEbner, @barbersclass
A1: an example I recently used to give voice and choice is Gave Ss 4 options to explain the XYZ Affair - using flipgrid paired with legos, telling the story with GIFs, writing it out as an essay, or something creative they could come up with. #ohedchat
A1: You promote voice and choice by treating the students as respected human beings. This is hard to do, it requires consistent school-wide effort to allow students this freedom without having chaos. PBIS is a good option to use to aim towards this goal! #ohedchat
Gary, former Supt, now trainer for character ed. Even when working with Ts, I offer up options in types of projects to complete & collaborate with them in creating a criteria chart for assessment. #OhEdChat
#ohedchat In my future classroom I think that a great way to provide choice is by presenting lessons to appeal to different learning styles, be it visual, aural, oral etc and letting them demonstrate knowledge in their preferred style #barbersclass
A1: Encourage students to stay engaged in think-alouds when doing activities. I also think allowing them to decide on what task they complete first when it comes to the agenda gives them choice! #ohedchat
I've loved how Backchannel Chat enables quieter students to use their voice in a way that is more comfortable. Some amazing insights and ideas have come through those chats! #ohedchat
A1: Giving students a chance to voice their opinions is so important. I have observed several classrooms that have given the students the freedom to select what books to read, or how they want to present their work. #ohedchat
Praising students for their appropriate decisions and remarks as well as encouraging individuality could definitely help promote voice and choice within classrooms! #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A1: I am constantly asking my students for feedback on what we are learning and what they feel we need to cover more. I utilize Google Forms to ask for their voices at least twice a quarter. #ohedchat
This is one of my fav. tech tools for introverts, too. I've even had Ss run their own Twitter style chats via https://t.co/t3UvbaPmnL. Let them be the leader! #ohedchat
In reply to
@TebnerEbner, @jillcolaw, @AlyseConsiglio
A1: To promote choice and voice in learning, you have to be willing to promote and encourage teacher risk. Get out of the comfort zone. Build in collaboration time. #OHedchat
I've used @Flipgrid a lot this year, Ss can initiate conversations on books w/ other Ss. Today Ss used the @BookCreatorApp new collaboration mode to allow choice & voice in publishing content together. I love @KidblogDotOrg too for choice in writing ! #ohedchat
In reply to
@bethctech, @Flipgrid, @BookCreatorApp, @KidblogDotOrg
A:1 I'm currently not a teacher, but a way I would promote student voice and choice would be by having discussions boards. I could put up weekly topics, where they could voice their opinion or comment to others. I wouldn't make it mandatory #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
The issue I see in many classrooms is that students, at times, would rather stay silent and not speak their voice in fear of their peers, or disengagement with the topic(s) #ohedchat
A1: Another good method is allowing students to suggest rewards to work toward. This not only gives them a choice, but is a motivation tool for achievement in the classroom! #barbersclass#ohedchat
A1: I love having conversations with Ss about their thinking or why they created something. This might lead to discovering their passions/ideas as a way to use them for future learning. #ohedchat
A1 I firmly believe in Ss choice & self selection of reading in the classroom, & to offer guidance when asked, rather than forcing a "one book for all approach" #ohedchat
A1: I started student led book clubs this year. Each group wrote own contract with goals and consequences. I only meet when they finish the book. They love it. #ohedchat
@MrBradleyHMS
Sorry gang...late to the party.
A1: We give students voice/choice by allowing them to work at their on pace through teacher-curated playlists. Students decide when they're ready to assess.
#ohedchat
Using technology at first and then gradually removing the technology devices, having small group responses with volunteers sharing, then rotating the sharing to individual group members and so on. #ohedchat
Sorry gang...late to the party.
A1: We give students voice/choice by allowing them to work at their on pace through teacher-curated playlists. Students decide when they're ready to assess.
#ohedchat
I do not consider my self a writer, but I think it would neat to have a topic and the student write about it in their journals!
@barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
A2 I do not see myself as a writer, but I do love to write. I model as much as I can for my Ss, I free write with them, but I need to share more about how I write outside of the classroom. And make myself write more! #ohedchat
A2: While I was still teaching I wrote a weekly column in the local paper. Humorous stories, commentaries, etc. We would talk about them in class and discuss how I came up with the columns. We shared them around the school. #ohedchat
Q2: Personally, I do not see myself as a writer, I do enjoy collaborating with my co-workers about new ideas and topics! #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A2: I have never seen myself as a writer but im currently maintaining a blog for my #immooc book study. It’s a great way to reflect and make changes in my teaching. #ohedchat
I think it starts with giving students confidence with their voice, not saying "you matter", but saying other perspectives are very valuable and support for the same argument is also valuable #ohedchat
#ohedchat I am a big fan of journaling in my personal life as a way to wind down and sort my thoughts. I would love to see this used as a behavior intervention for students instead of traditional detentions #barbersclass
A2: I enjoy journaling each day and maybe I would incorporate some journaling within the classroom as well! This would be something fun for the students to start doing. I would then allow them to share with the class if they wish too! @barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
A2: Challenge to our future teachers - for the sake of your students, see yourself as a writer! Regardless of what content or levels you teach, your students need to see you as a writer! #ohedchat
I do not have a classroom yet, but I have always liked the idea of having weekly discussion questions or daily journals that the children would write in. I think writing is a very important part of communication! @barbersclass#barbersclss#ohedchat
A2: I've done a unit in the past focused on writing poetry. Teach the rules of writing, and then ask Ss to break them. Sitting down to write with Ss is one of the best parts of teaching #ohedchat
A2: I write some pretty funny Facebook posts about my kids. Then this year, started my principals blog. It's scary and awesome at the same time, especially when you watch the view count! #ohedchathttps://t.co/Y9xc9C4Sx8
A2: I am not really sure that I would consider myself a writer, but as a teacher I would allow my students to see my own writing before completing an assignment. #ohedchat
A2: I do see myself as a writer. When I first started blogging, I asked my students to share with me what they wished their teachers knew about gifted kids. It became a powerful piece--they saw me wrestle with it and polish it up. #ohedchat
A2: I do consider myself a writer, however I don't see myself sharing any of my writings with my students. Maybe though one day I may create a short story for the students to read in class. #ohedchat
A 1: voice and choice allow students to have more opportunities to create engagement with their peers and promote student centered learning. They are able to understand the why behind certain material. #barbersclass@barberclass#ohedchat
A2: I do not have a classroom yet, but I have always liked the idea of having weekly discussion questions or daily journals that the children would write in. I think writing is a very important part of communication! @barbersclass#barbersclss#ohedchat
A2: I do not see myself as a writer. I have always struggled with writing because the first time I wrote a paper was in college! #barbersclass#ohedchat@barbersclass
A2: I definitely see myself as a writer. One of my favorite things to with Ss is slip articles I have written into our Article of the Week...Ss get excited when they recognize my writing and have the chance to respond to it. #ohedchat
I like the idea of writing and expressing ones feelings. I think it is important and helps children. Assigning a journal entry every week would be something fun and positive!! #barbersclass#ohedchat
A2: Yes I do consider myself a writer! I currently keep multiple journals and as a student I love to share my writing with classmates and friends! #barbersclass@barbersclass#ohedchat
Technically we are all still students of life, there will always be a constraint to outsmart or outwork to overcome. its a fun part about life in a sence #ohedchat

A2. My plan was to be a great writier. In HS I sat at home and wrote for hours and hours. Finally, I had to courage to turn it in to the teacher. Months later she gave it back - only thing it had was a 'B' at the top of each page - that's it! :-( Rarely wrote again #ohedchat
A2: Here is a question that I love! Be a blogger! Share your passion and reflect on your work. Be transparent. Be proud. Share! #compelledtribe#ohedchat
A2 I consider myself a writer on certain days. I like to have Ss write to a prompt and I will write along with them on the board for all to see. #ohedchat
I write down my own stories as examples for their stories! I change the details of course, but I share how much I love writing through this process! #ohedchat
A2: when I taught math, we would write frequently - compare/contrast, persuasive writings about best methods, etc. Learning to communicate in all content areas is so important #OHedchat
That is so funny! I post some pretty silly thing on social media as well! I was thinking about starting my own bog too! @barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
YES! Ownership is more powerful than choosing which activity to complete or "do" first. it respects the learner, their metacognition, & where they are "on the path" #ohedchat
A2. As Ss are doing the assignment when writing out observations, I'll read mine to them so they can compare differences in experiments. Writing is an important tool, and this is how we can share and express ourselves. #ohedchat
A2. Recently I began blogging! :-) You can read it here https://t.co/AAAObdC9nT if you would like to check it out on the new website I am working on #ohedchat
A2- I don't see myself as a writer, though I enjoy editing papers. I could share my writing life with students or staff by creating a website that discusses everyday activities in my future classes. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A2: I personally do not write a whole lot but I feel like it could be beneficial when I am a future teacher that I keep a notebook to help myself keep notes to better my teaching style. #ohedchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
Hi Matt! I never wrote in math class, and I think that is a great way to help understand math and be a great motivator! #barbersclass#ohedchat@barbersclass
My favorite class in 7th grade was Language Arts because we did creative journals every day for 20mins of class time. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass

A2: I do not see myself as a writer, but I would like to work on it. I would likely start with a commonplace book, a book of centuries and written narration. I would then share these with my students. #ohedchat
Yes! I encourage you to do this! The best observation I got to see what a teacher that shared her rejection letter from a magazine about her paper. She walked them through the revision process - cool to see her grit in real life! #ohedchat
A2: if I were grading myself on a standards-based scale, I'd definitely be developing to meet the standard! Don't promote writing near as much as I should. Do try and share what I am reading with staff. #ohedchat
#ohedchat for those of you interested in my last tweet about journaling as an alternative to detention, I was inspired by this article about the benefits of meditation in schools!
https://t.co/lbnmg6psmT
As writers, we're always growing and learning more. I'm trying to remember which author it was who said she can't look at her published books without finding things she would revise and change--maybe Lois Lowry? That really struck me. #ohedchat
I kept an interactive journal with my cooperating teacher in student teaching, and with my mentor my first year of teaching. It was a literal spiral notebook (yeah, I'm old), and it was wonderful because I could reflect on practice, ask questions, & get feedback. #ohedchat
A3. I ran into this article the other day about helping a class write a successful blog - I bookmarked it - https://t.co/dU8WbXQIXE - I love the tips and have used some of them myself! #ohedchat
A2: I enjoy writing...have tried blogging (I need to pick this back up), but am sometimes hesitant to share. I want my "voice" to come through in my writing and worry that I'm not always able to achieve this, so I don't share it. #ohedchat
Q3: I think a way that we can support our students and staff to take a risk and be vulnerable is to promote acceptance and the idea that all thoughts are valued no matter what they are. I also think using praise helps. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
It is always nice to reply to someone on what they have to say. Tell them what you liked about what they are saying. This shows that you care and you are listening and actually reading what they have to say #ohedchat
A3: I think that sharing your own wriitng with students can be the first step here, as well as acknowledging that your own insecurities with writing. Beign open and honest with your students will help them to feel comfortable doing the same! #ohedchat
A3: critiquing their grammar and sentence structure. Ha! JK. FEEDBACK that is 2-1 positive to critique. FEEDBACK that tells them their opinion is valued. Mostly FEEDBACK that you cared enough to read it. #ohedchat
A3: Given the opportunity to write about something you are passionate about or enjoy is key! Find what motivates Ss or colleagues and encourage them to write! #ohedchat
A3: In one of my writing classes we would do anonymous journals and everyday after you wrote in them they would be randomly handed out for you to write a positive and critical note in it for the other person to read. #ohedchat
A3: As a musician, I liken writing to singing - you are exposing a part of yourself, and that can be scary. Being in an environment that is supportive, and encourages risk-taking is the only way to make that more comfortable. We have to create that culture. #ohedchat
A3: Make it public! Keep writing and reading from others. Let people know your why and your learning journey - being transparent reveals who you are. #ohedchat
I feel like podcasts are a great alternative to writing but it is still personalized and I feel students could really learn a lot from them. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
Sometimes it's tough to overcome that hesitation. I want to blog more, too. It's probably lame, but time really is a factor right now--first year in a new position, taking classes, mom . . . #ohedchat
A3: Being open and vulnerable when it comes to sharing writing is hard for some people. Give positive feedback and support. Motivate students and staff to write and share! #ohedchat
It is important to encourage students to share their work and thank them for sharing! This will hopefully allow more students to write and share their work with others! I would share some of my personal writings as well to start them off!
@barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
A3: I think that sharing your own writing with students can be the first step here, as well as acknowledging that your own insecurities with writing. Being open and honest with your students will help them to feel comfortable doing the same! #ohedchat
A3: I make sure students know that they have a safe space to share their writing by encouraging them to give 2 kind reviews to each other when they share out in a class #ohedchat
A3 Learning how to give and take feedback is key to being okay with vulnerability. I think having a good relationship with those you are providing feedback or receiving feedback from is very important! #ohedchat
A3: model it 1st. I'll write something in the moment and share. Often it's bad enough to get a laugh, but it makes the process less stressful for Ss #ohedchat
A3: I think we can encourage a supportive writing environment by having students to share goals and allowing classmates to share suggestions on how to achieve those goals! #ohedchat#barbersclass
A3: Something that has always helped me is having a good thought partner who reads/listens to my ideas, sifts through them and points out the kernels of beauty and insight, and helps show the "fluff" that isn't needed. #ohedchat
A3: I think a good way to support others as writers is to take an interest in the things they write and have a meaningful discussion about what it means to them and how you can relate to that. #ohedchat
A3: As a student I have always been hesitant to share my writing because I see it as personal. So as a future teacher I will keep those thoughts in mind and intend to create a safe environment where the students feel comfortable sharing! @barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
A3. As writers, we are constantly sharing our works, learning from one another, sharing ideas, improvements which can be made for growth and understanding. Encourage, learn, share ideas, take risks which will allow for growth! #ohedchat
A3: Make a website or page where everyone can share their writing! They will feel comfortable and connected to the school and each other. #barbersclass#ohedchat@barbersclass
A3: We can support others by telling them it is okay to feel vulnerable and to get things wrong. It is also important to create a safe enviornment where the student does not feel pressured or stressed. @barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
A3: I think it’s important to remind others to start small with writing/maintaining blogs. I also believe it’s important to remind others that it’s ok to be wrong - we are constantly learning and growing. #ohedchat
A3:Being vulnerable can be very helpful it can lead to others expressing how they feel as well and if you start the chain everyone will soon follow. It's all about being open, you never know who will be positively effected by what your write. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A3: I would try to create an accepting environment so all the students feel safe sharing their ideas. I would also be open and share what makes me vulnerable #ohedchat
You wouldn't believe how many times I read over one of my blogs before I press that "Publish" button. At some point I just have to press it and realize that as you said, "we all make mistakes." #ohedchat
A3: We can support our students and staff by giving our opinion, but in a positive way! I would give positive feedback to what they wrote, then give my opinion without trying to offend them! #barbersclass#ohedchat@barbersclass
A3 I start the year with silly power writing. We write as much as we can time limits. Then we get up and group up and share. Mixup groups each time. It’s so fun and there isn’t any judgment. It helps set the stage for the year. #ohedchat
It's okay to be personal with Ss. You judge your comfort level. I tell my Ss that they can share what they are comfortable sharing and feel privileged when they share their lives with me. #ohedchat
In reply to
@Scibili_Melanie, @TebnerEbner, @barbersclass
A3: Being sure to voice connections we as teachers make to student writing which allows kids to see 1. We’ve read it. 2. Their voice matters. It’s vital we show kids that what they say/write is important #ohedchat
A3:Having weekly journals to write about anything that is on your mind in a writing class would be very beneficial, especially to students that might not write because this will get ideas flowing more & become more comfortable free writing. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
And I usually make my best friend (who works with me) read it before publishing, because I need that extra push of "it's fine" to have the guts roake it public! #ohedchat#bloggingishard
A3: Culture of a classroom, building and rapport are a big part of this. Resilience was a topic last week and the responses shocked me as students became vulnerable with me and each other. Students won’t take risk if they feel no support from their leader. #ohedchat
A3: one of the hardest things I have done was put an introduction video of myself on twitter for #Immooc but it had to be done - stepping out of my comfort zone has been one of my goals this year and slowly but surely I’m getting more comfortable. #ohedchat
A2: I think it is important to be a writer and a teacher. As teachers we are supposed to be good at communicating. Writing is a way that teachers can communicate. Writing can also encourage students to communicate their thoughts through pen. #ohedchat
A3: I am inspired by a variety of writers from all walks of life - having a list of writers (bloggers, Twitter accounts, authors, etc) organized by topics available to students helps to encourage their efforts as a writer #ohedchat
Never easy to be vulnerable and asking for feedback. On the flip side, giving feedback can be difficult too as you try to balance perceived harshness and getting to the point. Tone is so important #ohedchat
Hi Adam! I complete agree with you! It’s okay to be wrong, that’s how we learn! While giving feedback, it should just be in the best positive way #barbersclass@barbersclass#ohedchat
#ohedchat I was lucky to be a member of one of the top HS choirs in OH. When asked how we did it, I always tell people that it is b/c my peers and I were always encouraged if not required to give constructive and positive feedback to each other every!
A side-by-side writing conference can make a world of difference in how feedback is perceived. Not always practical, but a great, powerful tool to use when needed. #ohedchat
A4: We can use an online classroom and we can model what is appropriate and what isn't appropriate behavior to our students. Some student may have never seen the appropriate ways to act online. #ohedchat
A4 This year, I made digital badging with @WeAreLRNG to teach digital citizenship, and then expected blogs to model appropriate behavior. It needs to be embedded in what you teach. #ohedchat
A4: I think an important way to teach students digital citizenship is to allow them to use the technology and giving real life examples while teaching them how to use etiquette online. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A4: I think the first step is how you view students use of the digital world in your school or classroom. If you ban technology, you are not giving yourself the opportunity to teach and model responsible use of technology #ohedchat
A4 we started blogs first week of school and had Ss writing mean things in comments. It happened so fast. But, it led to a great talk about moderating comments and how public it all is. I try to keep it as real for them as I can. Apply it to their life. #ohedchat
Digital citizenship shouldn’t be a stand alone silo but intertwined in everything we do. Talk about the positive and negative power of social media. #ohedchat
RT Q4: Just as we teach students to use their voice, we need to teach how to be safe and how to behave online. How do you add teaching digital citizenship to your already full plate? #ohedchat
A4: I would add teaching digital citizenship the first week of class. I would add it to my rules, which will have consequences if they don't follow them! So anytime someone doesn't follow the rules, they already know the consequence. #ohedchat#barberclass@barbersclass
A4: Modeling is huge. A few years ago, some of my Ss learned I was active on Twitter. Next day they informed me that I am very boring on Twitter because I only Tweet edu stuff. #ohedchat
When I discuss classroom rules and expectations, I would mention that this positive behave applies online as well. Be respectful when communicating online too! (Classroom Blog) @barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
A4: Not only did I teach but I was the Communication Coordinator for the district including social media. Ss saw me as an “expert” in social media, we communicated through social media, and had many learning sessions w/ Ss. #ohedchat
A4: I collaborate with my colleagues to share the responsibility of teaching digital citizenship! Make sure to utilize the other amazing professionals in your buildings who know their stuff! #ohedchat
A4: We could teach them how to behave online by modeling it in our classroom. Having a teachnoolgy based game. One teacher I shadow lets the students text him through this app about questions on homework and stuff! Its really neat and builds relationships with students! #ohedchat
Q4: not only teachers, but parents too, need to show their students/kids how to behave online and stay safe. It is known, once something is put online it will always be there! #ohedchat
A4 there is always someone who means well in a comment, but it comes across mean. I try to relate it by using examples from text messages that start fights because someone misinterpreted it. #ohedchat
A4: I encourage and help teachers teach digital citizenship lessons that coincide with the content already being taught. Don’t make it an extra item. ELA and SS seem to be the easiest to do it with. #ohedchat
A4: I think you just have to incorporate it into your daily routine and learning. We use technology almost every day in our classrooms now days, so we should incorporate teaching students how to be safe and kind online just like we incorporate Ohio Learning Standards. #ohedchat
A4: In addition to modeling, sharing the stories of issues that happen when people aren't responsible can be helpful. Also worthwhile to point out the positive power of social media/online platforms when we use it for good. #ohedchat
A4: b/c internet etiquette changes constantly and is difficult to navigate, I think that Explicit Instruction is the perfect method for teaching digital citizenship so that students can see examples and nonexamples #ohedchat#barbersclass
A3: We need to praise their hard work more than we criticize what they still need to improve. It is a long process and we should not expect perfection overnight. This also holds true for ourselves and our inner critic. #ohedchat
A4: Have any of you ever heard of the "bucket filling book"? Since it seems kids these days are getting social media accounts at young ages, we need to teach kids about being kind on the internet and that can be taught just by everyday tasks. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
I often get asked why more schools don't ban cell phones, and I always respond with the same answer. If we don't teach them how to use tech responsibly, we are missing teaching a huge part of their lives. Tech is everywhere. #ohedchat
A4: As soon as we start using technology in the classroom I would address online etiquette and hold a class discussion on how others can interpret your words online. #barbersclass@barbersclass#ohedchat
A4: besides modeling and having a pretty strict social media policy (private school) I love Google's "Be Internet Awesome" https://t.co/Scvuqk1Djy#ohedchat
Hi Gary, I agree with you. Technology is in our everyday lives and therefore we need to model responsible use of technology! If we do this, it will help students know what to post in school and at home! #ohedchat#barberclass@barbersclass
A4: at the beginning of the year we went though digital citizenship using @CommonSense lessons. Valuable lessons for the Ss, but this is an area I could definitely improve in. I could be more consistent with reminders. #ohedchat
A4: Our LMSs are scaffolds.
Model digital citizenship through threads and other writing there and then transfer to the worldwide blogosphere with an authentic audience #ohedchat
A4) First and foremost, I see myself as an example on social media. I avoid polarizing or confrontational issues and am always aware of my audience. I also remind S’s that college reps, future employers, etc may be watching! #ohedchat
A4. Modeling for Ss appropriate behavior in the classroom. Teaching digital citizenship and the importance of the dangers that are out there on the internet. Along with crime, hacking, etc.#ohedchat
A4: Since technology is so prevalent in today's society, it would help to make sure you teach students at a young age how to act on the internet and how to always be kind to others. That is most important. #ohedchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
Modeling behavior is huge. Some parents don't keep an eye on what their students do online and they may just need to be educated on what is and isn't appropriate. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A4: it is also important that we as teachers use social media appropriately. Students can look us up easily, and we have to set a good example! #ohedchat
A4: I think that the use of technology in the classrooms is huge! I would model for my students what appropriate behavior online looks like, so they know what I expect from them. #barbersclass#ohedchat@barbersclass
Because when in their future will they not have a tool AT LEAST as good as the phone they have now. It would be like making the calc class use slide rules. I don't even know what that is #ohedchat
Absolutely! Heard a clip on the radio last summer about how colleges are looking at prospective students' social mediaaccounts, and some aren't accepted to their first choices because of what is seen on social media. #ohedchat
A4: let's be honest, our students struggle with this, and they've heard every acronym out there to guide their behavior. Being intentional in the teachable moments can make a difference, however #ohedchat
A4: Modeling for students and sharing examples that are are good/bad digital citizenship. Awareness is the key! Decisions/Actions that are made now, though they may be "deleted", never go away. #ohedchat
Q5: If your students and/or staff are blogging already, what resources can you offer to others eager to start? What concerns might keep you from wanting to start? #ohedchat
A4. There are so many different aspect of digital literacy - sharing this chart often leads to great conversations with staff, students and families. #ohedchat
When I discuss proper language/interactions for the class I will be sure to go over the importance of digital citizenship. I will also explain that social media goes well beyond the 5 inch screen that is seen before them. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
Sorry I’m so late to #ohedchat tonight. Was playing “Name that TV theme song with wife and sons! Totally worth the time spent. Anyways- high school counselor; Delaware, Ohio. Excited to join in here at the end!
I have noticed this feels like another assignment. If you want Ss to think about the way they act online when you're not watching, letting them show you how they act before they learn lets you know what to touch on and why they shouldn't act that way online is better. #ohedchat
Q4: Digital Citizenship should be included in every classroom, each day! Whether you’re pointing out where you found a resource, talking about password safety, or how to respond appropriately online...it can be part of our classroom norms, shouldn’t be a one week unit! #ohedchat
A5: I loved the support I found through @teachingquality and the community there, as well as blog training. I know @teachingpartner has offered some support, too. #ohedchat
A4: I think it's also important for adults at home to be a part of the digital citizenship conversation. We model at school, but it's equally important for Ss to see responsible uses at home. #ohedchat
A5: Have a goal in mind for what you want to blog/wrote about. Each of us have strengths and we should focus on those strengths in our writing. Focus on what we are good at and take a deep dive. And start reading all the great ed info out there! #ohedchat
A5: Personally, some of my concerns for wanting to start a blog is 1. not knowing what to talk about, 2. will anyone even read what I have to say, and 3. when will I have the time to blog? #ohedchat
A5: I would tell others to take a risk - we ask our Ss to take risks, we should be as well. If it fails, admit it, reflect on it, create a new way to use it. #ohedchat
A5: In order to encourage others to start I would incorporate it in my classroom via activities. My concerns would be students not having enough access to computers or not feeling comfortable sharing their ideas in such a public way. #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A5: I started blogging this year by sharing updates from our school. I would love to branch out and write original posts, haven't been brave enough yet! #ohedchat
A5: My main concern about starting a blog is that I may not know what to write about. What should it be based around? #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A3 I have my Ss look back a journal article they wrote earlier in the year. It lets them see the value of revisiting a piece of writing, while exploring privately their weakness & celebrating growth. #ohedchat
Two days ago I knew I needed to blog so I texted three people and got their input and BINGO - off to the races I went once they shared a few suggestions! It was wonderful! #ohedchat
A5: Once I become a teacher I will use blogging. It is a great way to keep the parents updated because it's hard to trust some kids to bring letters home to their parents. The only concern for me would be the privacy policies. #ohedchat#barberclass@barbersclass
A5: I was struggling to have my Ss blog this year, to me it seemed random and inconsistent. I went back to the drawing board and designed a project where they are blogging from the perspective of a federalist or democratic-republican. #ohedchat
A5: I would start a classroom blog that all of my students contribute ideas toward writing one collective post each week. Having a group blog might make them less nervous to share ideas on their own blog later! #ohedchat#barbersclass
A5.2: Blogging is cathartic. And amazing when you see someone at a wedding or your financial planning appointment or other random places and they say "hey I read your blog" say what??! #ohedchat
A5: In my Ed Tech class this semester we used https://t.co/4z0cAq6ukg & I felt like it was very easy to use! The only concerns are that blogs for younger students might not be as benefical than to older students. #ohedchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
A5: Start the list. Share what other bloggers are doing and how they are leading and learning. Have students read and reflect on each other’s work. #model#ohedchat
Q5: If your students and/or staff are blogging already, what resources can you offer to others eager to start? What concerns might keep you from wanting to start? #ohedchat
You might be surprised, though, too. I found KidBlog to be very user-friendly. I had my Ss using that, and I kept it locked down tightly for privacy. We could see each other's blogs but not anyone's beyond our classes. #ohedchat
A6: I personally do not follow any blogs but I would be interested in following some to help me as a future educator #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
If you let your students write what they want then the shy ones will write less revealing posts to start, but after writing a little most students open up more due to positive interaction with readers and classmates. #ohedchat
A6: I will demonstrate what my blog looks like and hopefully this will encourage students to get involved with blogging and sharing their voices! @barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
Hi Beth! That is probably the first thing that I would do! Thats a great idea to have them be anonymous, thanks for the great feedback! #ohedchat#barberclass@barbersclass

A6: I think my favorite blogs would be helpful to students so they can get ideas to write about, and how to appropriately get your thoughts across on the internet. It would turn into a great model for the students. #ohedchat
A6: I am not aware of any blogs, but it would be helpful to see a resource that shows blog templates with varying writing, organization, and formatting styles #ohedchat#barbersclass
A6: I honestly think blogs can be very empowering, therefore when students use them they will be able to use their voices and speak their mind (in a positive way).
#ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A6: I have so many favorite blogs on https://t.co/nAvIOo1kev --so many great bloggers. There are some that would be excellent for starting discussion and also showing Ss how we can write our stories. #ohedchat#CTQCollab@teachingquality
A6: As students begin to use their voices they can explore other blogs and bring the knowledge they’ve learned from the blogs into the classroom! #barbersclass@barbersclass#ohedchat
A6: I do not blog, or currently read any. But I think students could be guided and directed on the right path if they are reading other blogs. This would help them feel more confident when it comes to using their voice! #ohedchat
A6: I believe that it will help motivate them to get their voices out. Some students may be shy, but if they can relate to one of my favorite bloggers, it may open their shell! #ohedchat#barberclass@barbersclass
A6: Ss can become comfortable. It also creates a buffer time for response. Sometimes it takes a minute to process and and begins to flow once the thoughts flow through the fingers to the keyboard. Just as I did in this response #ohedchat
A6: Viewing something already successful can show students what they need to look for when creating a blog of their own, design, themes, structure etc #ohedchat
A6: My students would be able to refer to my favorite blogs and resources for encouragement and strength to use their voices. #barbersclass#ohedchat@barbersclass
I’m trying to connect with another class outside of my school with kidblog. It is a good resource to use because I have to approve the posts. #ohedchat

No just obsessed with the soundtrack. Today I explained to my 6 and 8 year old why Angelica had to introduce A. Ham to Eliza. Delicate verbage! (They know all the words too) #ohedchat
For younger students you can also use @Flipgrid which allows students to record themselves (takes away the typing prob for K/1).They have lots to say and can make amazing discoveries! So important to allow even our youngest students a way to share to a wider audience! #ohedchat

I will have to check them out! I am super excited that I learned so much about blogs! I want to start one now! Thank you all so much. @barbersclass#barbersclass#ohedchat
A6 Students can begin to find their own favorite blogs and offer suggestions as to what they want to see! This way instructions will be designed to meet the students wants and spark class excitement as activities will be students ideas! #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
Big thanks to our moderators and fellow educators! There have been so many creative ideas shared tonight to help our students find and express their voices! #ohedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
Sending a huge THANK YOU to tonight's moderator's from Florida - along with some sunshine and warmer temperatures! I love all of these students being here - it is outstanding. Learning together is what Twitter is all about. #ohedchat
Following each other on Twitter is such a terrific way to continue to grow and learn. Never can tell when you might need to ask someone a question or reach out for help. #ohedchat
Thanks so much to @bethctech for joining us tonight and sharing so much about how she amplifies student voice! You are doing great things for kids, and we appreciate you! #ohedchat
