#ProsperISD chat open to all in and out of district teachers discussing best practices and working with students K-12. It will occur on the second Thursday of every month at 8:00pm CST.
A1 There is always a better way than a worksheet. Students don't get excited about a piece of paper. My son comes home with stacks of paper and can't tell me the importance of any of them. #Prosper4Ward
A1 I think worksheets can have a place as a formative assessment, but you have to have a PURPOSE for it. It can't just be a time filler or just because. #Prosper4ward
A1: Depends upon what is being taught.1st graders learning how to spell yes. With all of the tools GSuite has made available, there is no reason for packets to be made when a student can submit work right into Classroom, using Google Docs. #Prosper4Ward
A1: This is a tough one for me. Of course my 1st reaction is NO WAY! But I was guilty of using quick 1-2 question "worksheets" as a warm-up before I had devices. I think it depends on the activity. Is it drill and kill or engagement? #Prosper4Ward
A1 part 2: There is usually a more engaging and interactive way to teach a lesson than with a worksheet. It is just taking the time before to create it! #Prosper4Ward
A1: BORING! A student doesn't remember how awesome a worksheet was. They remember the experience and getting up moving around and using their hands and voices. Worksheets are allowed in Room 409 #Prosper4Ward
Worksheets are not engaging and they definitely should be limited. However, I do think there can be a time and place for them occasionally. Sometimes the Ss need 2 practice pencil-paper. But not a way of learning for sure... #Prosper4ward
A1. Worksheets are tricky. Teachers can gain valuable assessment data, but, oh boy, do students love a more interactive approach.... which can also provide the same valuable data. Think #Kahoot#flipgrid and #googleclassroom#Prosper4Ward
There is a time and a place for worksheets, but we also need to think about what will make students productive citizens. Most of my job as a teacher is done digitally. Sooo..... #Prosper4ward
A1 Thereās always a better way than a worksheet. Our top priority is student engagement to produce learning. Worksheets arenāt engaging. #Prosper4ward
A1: I would say they do have their place for a quick exit ticket possibly or CFA data??? I do think we need to move away from these things...and use more of the G suite and apps #Prosper4ward
A1: I think a worksheet (not a packet) can have a place in the classroom, HOWEVER, if that is the *only* way we are trying to engage Ss we probably are not hitting the mark w/ them! Worksheets aren't helping them LEARN the material. #Prosper4Ward
A1 There is always a better way to assess and to make it more engaging and interesting. According to my 3rd grader...writing so much gives him a bump on his finger. #Prosper4ward
A1: for kinder especially itās so important for students to learn how to hold and write with a pencil, but everything is good in moderation. Mix it up at add in technology, make it engaging! #finemotorskills#handwriting#Prosper4Ward
YES! It makes my teacher heart so happy to look around my classroom and have all my students engaged. This rarely happens with worksheets. #Prosper4Ward
A1 Thereās always a better way than a worksheet. Our top priority is student engagement to produce learning. Worksheets arenāt engaging. #Prosper4ward
Q1 As stated can have some small benefit if used sparingly. In my experience worksheet was code for: "ya'll work quietly while I sit at my desk and grade last night's work. Feel free to ask ?'s but I would prefer you not." #prosper4ward
Iām not sure if they have a place or not, but I think we can usually do more with something else - more collaboration, more and faster feedback, more and faster connectivity with other programs or people #Prosper4Ward
A1: With this generation of Ss worksheets are quickly moving towards āretirementā. I donāt feel the engagement level is high when theyāre being used!
#Prosper4Ward
YES. Problem is, Google tools, as much as I love them, can also be used as busy work too. We need to be intentional about whatever we use... #Prosper4Ward
Q1 As stated can have some small benefit if used sparingly. In my experience worksheet was code for: "ya'll work quietly while I sit at my desk and grade last night's work. Feel free to ask ?'s but I would prefer you not." #prosper4ward
A1: Very sparing use. Need a better purpose than "fill some time." Can Ss answer a few ?s, then collaborate with others to build a better response?
#Prosper4Ward
A1...The best question ever, "How will the worksheet impact the learning in such a profound way that the student will remember the learning?" Things that make you go hmmmm...#Prosper4Ward
A1. I agree! Worksheets can be easy to use but I love digital tools for increasing student engagement and for how quickly you can collect data with them. I love using #seesaw, #Kahoot and #nearpod to transform student learning! #Prosper4ward
A1: In some areas, say handwriting, worksheets are ok. For most other tasks, apps or websites can be better. When comparing Prodigy to a worksheet.....š¤Ø#Prosper4Ward#ruckerrocks#firstgrade
A1: There are varying degrees of "worksheetness", in my opinion. The best are always teacher-created, well-timed, and designed to allow real thinking to still occur through writing. #Prosper4Ward
A1) a tool, not THE tool. There are so many options available to teachers today beyond a piece of paper. Why wouldn't we start with something else? Kids are not one dimensional why should our activities/assessments be?
#Prosper4ward
A1: I agree worksheets arenāt always the best method, but in my subject, they can be incredibly useful for students learning to read, write, reproduce, notate, & COMPOSE music. Music literacy is the goal w/composition & improvisation as the highest order of thinking #prosper4ward
Q2 What is your most commonly used method of reviewing content with your students?
Make sure to add an A2 in front of your answer and the hashtag #Prosper4ward

#Prosper4ward
A2 Anything that allows for student voice and peer feedback is great! @Flipgrid, Collaborative Slides, Hyperdocs, Questions in Google Classroom, etc. #Prosper4ward
A2 I love using Kahoot, Quizziz, hyperdocs, and having students create posters to share with the class. These are fun and interactive ways for the students to review topics! #Prosper4ward
A2: I do a lot of small group instruction when reviewing content. I am currently obsessed with Nearpod! We did a GREAT review on rhyming words using nearpod last week! #Kindergarten#rhyming#Nearpod#Prosper4Ward
A2: Reviewing looks different every week in our class. It could be exit tickets, warm ups, GrudgeBall, or a simple conversation I have with the kiddos. #Prosper4Ward
A1: Want to make a worksheet impactful? Pair up two students with different answers/thoughts and let them debate until they agree. Limit their use but maximize their impact. #justify#Prosper4ward
In general worksheets are a snoozer for most students, but in certain scenarios worksheets can provide concrete visuals students can readily use for reference. #Prosper4ward
A2: Well, normally it would be a quick mini lesson, with some review and practice, but lately these things called #hyperdocs have me on fire!!!!! #Prosper4ward
A2: When I was in the classroom, I usually reviewed using games. Jeopardy-type stuff, writing on desks with dry-erase markers, etc. Towards the end, I started to make Powerpoint games to review. If I were in the classroom now, how could I be more innovative? #Prosper4Ward
A2: Anything with high engagement! Games, stations, etc. Where does your lesson fall on the SAMR model? Higher SAMR, Higher engagement, higher learning outcomes! #Prosper4Ward
A2: I don't know if I have a common one...like to switch it up...Quizzlet live is good, discussion, good ol jeopardy, grudgeball, scoot, breakouts, scavenger hunts....the list goes on and on #prosper4ward
Q2 What is your most commonly used method of reviewing content with your students?
Make sure to add an A2 in front of your answer and the hashtag #Prosper4ward
A2: Love to have them construct something (Easy in science) We use so much digital tech that breaking out glue and scissors is a NOVELTY!
#Prosper4Ward
A2: SeeSaw is an amazing tool to use for students to explain their thinking. It can be used as a review or a CFA. Teachers can really see the breakdowns in their logic. #Prosper4Ward#ruckerrocks#firstgrade
I agree. We will begin noticing more and more than fine motor will be lost the more screens they are touching. I guess there's a fine line there. #Prosper4Ward
A2) I am the first to raise my hand to use technology with students! However, there is power in relational connection with well planned cooperative learning structures or students to interact, laugh, learn, discuss, and review with each other. #Prosper4ward
#Prosper4ward
NEW 1st grade Teacher at Hughes....new to prosper and Texas in May. Came from IL. I am loving TX and loving Prosper even more. So excited to learn more tonight!
A2: When I was in the classroom, I used a lot of game-like review tools such as @GetKahoot@quizlet@Socrative@nearpod - Anything that made reviewing more engaging than here's your paper review, now let's go over the answers.
A2 I donāt have a āmost commonly used methodā. Using a variety of methods: quiz a friend, Kahoot, journaling, Flipgrid to check understanding, games (online & traditional). The possibilities are endless, and one size doesnāt fit all. #Prosper4ward
A2: Lately, I've been using a lot of @flipgrid for review & reflection. I love Google Groups, too, not only to allow time for their thoughtful responses, but also for their replies. It's made grading easier for me, as well, which is a huge plus! #timecruncheveryday#Prosper4Ward
Q2 What is your most commonly used method of reviewing content with your students?
Make sure to add an A2 in front of your answer and the hashtag #Prosper4ward
A2: singing games, interactive white board games, manipulative activities, student-led collaboration, all kinds. Come play with us (they donāt realize theyāre learning). #prosper4ward
A1: I agree -Kinders need paper to practice fine motor skills, such as handwriting and scissor skills, but the need hands on and tech for engagement #prosper4ward
Q2 - Things have changed since I started teaching [an unnamed amount of years ago]. If I were a classroom teacher today, I would use data gathered from @GoogleForEdu Classroom, @GetKahoot, and other #edtechtools in addition to the paper/pencil here and there. #Prosper4Ward
Just wait until you see what @nearpod is coming out with very soon! Got to meet with them today and they just reaffirmed move love obsession! LOVE #Nearpod! #Prosper4Ward
A2 I donāt have a āmost commonly used methodā. Using a variety of methods: quiz a friend, Kahoot, journaling, Flipgrid to check understanding, games (online & traditional). The possibilities are endless, and one size doesnāt fit all. #Prosper4ward
I want activities that motivate kids to try there hardest. If there brains are engaged the reviews are more impactful. Haney quest, quizzizz, Kahoot it someone please ask me what a haney quest is #Prosper4ward
A2 anything that makes them write. Exit ticket, free response. Most people have difficulty writing coherently about anything they don't understand. #prosper4ward
Just wait until you see what @nearpod is coming out with very soon! Got to meet with them today and they just reaffirmed move love obsession! LOVE #Nearpod! #Prosper4Ward
A2. Review games are my favorite! Making it fun and engaging creates a memorable experience. Also, Kagan strategy Quiz-Quiz-Trade is great for student led review sessions. #Prosper4Ward
A1: I agree -Kinders need paper to practice fine motor skills, such as handwriting and scissor skills, but the need hands on and tech for engagement #prosper4ward
and to add on to this question: I used @goswivl to record a mock panel presentation for my students last week, then they did self critiques and heard from their peers, as well. This was a great review method for that specific task. #Prosper4Ward
A1- worksheets are one tool we use. Our team is working on incorporating better options for the students. Iāve earned a few new badges working on the process! #Prosper4Ward@BakerElem
I want activities that motivate kids to try there hardest. If there brains are engaged the reviews are more impactful. Haney quest, quizzizz, Kahoot it someone please ask me what a haney quest is #Prosper4ward
A1 -A worksheet can be a guide for the students when they learn a concept for the first time. It will never be as effective as "playing" a game with friends and CREATING something by themselves. Technology is also great, nothing replaces personal collaboration.
#Prosper4ward
A2: my kids love a good Kahoot but after exploring @ClassFlow and @nearpod I think Iām obsessed!! You can add in questions and get instant feedback on how your students did!! #prosper4ward#ruckerrocks
A2b) Kids still love a white board & marker to quickly write a response for review & hold it up. There is something about being able to hold it, touch it, and connect for students. Tech is great but so are hand helds! Multiple ways for a mutipilicity of modalities #Prosper4ward
The reflection and feedback pieces are HUGE to the learning process! If we don't offer that to our Ss, we aren't really getting them to the goal! #Prosper4Ward
A1: In kindergarten, I think they have a time and a place (handwriting, letter formation), but there are also so many other ways to engage those young learners. #Prosper4Ward
Q1 worksheets can sure be boring! One challenge for me has been making sure my technology uses are not just worksheet like activities on a computer. Is my technology use doing things that couldnāt be done before? #Prosper4ward
A2: I canāt say that I have a commonly used method or prefer one over the other but I love using #googleforms to check for understanding. #Prosper4Ward
A3: Engagement. I found those students who were reluctant to vocalize an answer were more engaged with a game. Got a lot more out of them then expected! #Prosper4Ward
Absolutely! I love that Swivl doesn't require the Ss to have an account to see the video. I posted to Google Classroom and assigned to the appropriate Ss and have them add comments on improvements on the assignment. Worked beautifully! #Prosper4Ward
A3 Online tools allow for collaboration any time from anywhere. Feedback can be given in real time which helps students understand any misconceptions quickly. #Prosper4Ward
A3 Students enjoy using technology in the classroom so why would we NOT include that in a review. Digital reviews can also include more interactive pieces which make the review fun which then makes them take in more info #Prosper4ward
It looks like our PROSPER Peeps at TCEA have made some new friends! Welcome to all of you joining us from other school districts. Just an FYI, Prosper ISD is one of the Top 100 places to work...just sayin' #prosper4ward
A1: I have a handful of varying thoughts about this... many people will say āabsolutely no worksheetsāā then assign something equivalent to a āworksheetā through @googleclassroom and consider the rigor to be higher just bc itās digital #Prosper4Ward
A3: Like any tech tool, online practice tools are "force multipliers." Used well, they can deepen learning. Used poorly (busy work,) they can be detrimental. These tools are great, but we must always ask ourselves why, and make sure that we use tech with purpose. #Prosper4Ward
I also think digital responses give a voice to ALL students. We have started using @Flipgrid for number talks and it has been a game changer! #Prosper4Ward
Completely with you and raise you one! Would love to see students create self assessments. Are they not the one's being asked to own the learning? Student centered learning from beginning to end! #Prosper4ward
A3. Using online tools piques student interest and provides a level of interaction they arenāt going to get with paper and pencil looking down at their desk. Think collaboration and communication! #Prosper4Ward
A2- my students created their own game to review concepts. The 8th grade boys that volunteered in our class were very impressed with the game and what 2nd graders know. Stop by and play a round of āHeads-Upā with us @BakerElem#Prosper4Ward
Q2/Q3 Students worked collaboratively as a class to produce a Google tool for analyzing text structures. It was an instant resource for all of them once it was created & they have referenced it many times since. Collaboration rocks! #Prosper4Ward
Yes, this! Does the activity lend itself to lower-level thinking, closed questioning, low engagement? It's a worksheet in disguise!šµļøāāļø #Prosper4Ward
Q1 worksheets can sure be boring! One challenge for me has been making sure my technology uses are not just worksheet like activities on a computer. Is my technology use doing things that couldnāt be done before? #Prosper4ward
A2: I use a variety of tools to review such as Kahoot, Nearpods are engaging, hyperdocs have definitely helped us kick it up a notch and I absolutely love Seesaw to explain their thinking. #Prosper4Ward
A3: 1. You don't "lose" the review. 2. Kids think they are playing a game, not reviewing. 3. Kids can play the review over and over. 4. They are just more fun! #Prosper4Ward
A3: There are lots of benefits. They usually require minimal prep for Ts & are updated so often we donāt have to worry about using ādatedā material. They allow for individual & collaborative practice, high engagement & differentiation. #Prosper4ward
A3: So many benefits: for me it saves me TIME and that alone is a lifesaver. For my students, I think being able to meet them where they are technology-wise is a game changer. It also allows for differentiation which I've seen firsthand with my @cisdSWAT
Ss. #Prosper4Ward
A3) Reviews and assessments can be dynamic and collaborative. Connecting students and teachers to digital tools can create meaningful pathways to material. #Prosper4ward
A3: I love that using #GSuite apps like Google forms allows you to collect answers in one place! No more lugging tons of papers home to be graded! #prosper4ward
I may have told like 10 people that they should apply to work at Prosper! Page 20 of the Tech Edge Magazine is also great advertisement :) #Prosper4Ward
A3: 1. You don't "lose" the review. 2. Kids think they are playing a game, not reviewing. 3. Kids can play the review over and over. 4. They are just more fun! #Prosper4Ward
A3: One benefit to using online tools is the ability to make your instruction specific for what your students need. You can edit from anywhere!! Bonus, you are able to share with your team by a click of a button for the benefit of ALL students!!
#Prosper4Ward#ruckerrocks
Q2 I make a lot of Nearpod and Google Form reviews for my students they are simple to create and provide quick feedback for reteaching opportunities. #Prosper4ward
A3. Collaboration! Digital tools like #googleclassroom allow for collaboration between students as well as giving a voice to those students who might otherwise not answer #prosper4ward
Variation and engagement are key to review methods. I do find most students enjoy any type of review that involves a collaborative challenge/competition. #Prosper4ward
A3: I love the immediate feedback option and they can see it privately. I do love writing on the desk or whiteboard, but I also don't enjoy lugging papers back and forth to school. #Prosper4Ward
A4: It's all about mindset and not being afraid to break out of the box. Try something new, remember, it should be STUDENT CENTERED, not teacher centered. #Prosper4Ward#mindset#breakoutofthebox
A3: one benefit that I LOVE about using online tools is the ability to easily differentiate for students. If used effectively, online tools make student driven learning very accessible for both teachers and students #Prosper4Ward
A4: I would invite them to come see how engaged my students are when using technology. I would encourage him/her to just try! Golden Equation: Technology + Authenticity = Engagement!
https://t.co/cVHOkbTU6b#growthmindset#Prosper4Ward
A4 Think about a training you have been to...what were the things that made it valuable to you? Probably had something to do with hands on, interactive, and gave you time to practice. These can all be accomplished through a digital review...not worksheets. #Prosper4ward
A4 A good way to reflect on your own teaching is to see yourself and then observe others. I would suggest the teacher record their own lesson and then observe a teacher that doesn't use worksheets. Change is scary but necessary for our Ss. #Prosper4Ward
100%! Collaboration is key. Exposing students to multiple ways of doing so and allowing for voice in various forms is a great use of tech.! #Prosper4Ward
A3. Collaboration! Digital tools like #googleclassroom allow for collaboration between students as well as giving a voice to those students who might otherwise not answer #prosper4ward
Honestly my āmost commonā method of reviewing with my students is good old question and answer. I love having real authentic conversations with my students and often find myself in my āmorning meetingā asking review questions. They love it. #Prosper4Ward
Q2: I am a big fan of Quizlets, Kahoot and any form of games. We recently did a human timeline of the TX. Revolution. Helped me see what kids really learned and what they didnāt know! #Prosper4ward
I have loved Flipgrid lately for that reason!! Gives all my students a voice and way to share their response without all eyes on them!
#Prosper4Ward#ruckerrocks
A4.2 Perhaps when they see how your Ss respond they will ask you how you did that! Or not-but worse case scenario you get to observe a colleague and possibly learn something! #Prosper4Ward
Q3: Online games and tools can be done anywhere, anytime. Quizlets on the way to school on the bus. Driving home from practice, or sitting anywhere in class. Not to mention keeping the kids engaged #Prosper4ward
A4: I would ask if we could collaborate to make an engaging activity to teach/review/assess and use all the knowledge gained at #TCEA to help them! #Prosper4Ward
A4) a worksheet is like a security blanket or training wheels for some. For others, it's just lazy - let's be honest. The point is to grow those around to us see the power of "what if" and explore other ways. Take a step. Start by modeling! #Prosper4ward
A 4. I would have them think about the professional development sessions they have been to and ask which ones they were most engaged in and why? #Prosper4Ward
A4: I would ask if we could collaborate to make an engaging activity to teach/review/assess and use all the knowledge gained at #TCEA to help them! #Prosper4Ward
A4: I always focus on the TIME they would save in their day. That's my "hook" and then once they begin breaking away from that mindset they slowing begin to transform and see other ways!
#Prosper4Ward
A4- I would suggest they join our PLC and we can work together to come up with some new exciting options. I am very fortunate to learn from some brilliant educators daily. @BakerElem#Prosper4Ward
A4 - Sharing is caring. I would show them the benefits of using digital tools. I hope that by showing them the benefits, they would be more willing to try! #prosper4ward
A4 Honestly I would introduce them to: other methods, engaging educators, new tools and invite them to a lesson in my class or ANY PISD classroom. āš» #highfive#Prosper4ward
A4: I would also show them a tech infused, student/teacher engaged classroom, where failure is celebrated and let them hang out for a day....I can find many of these in Prosper and @RuckerRocks#Prosper4ward
A4: I would say you can take my word for it and that itās more fun, impactful and engaging or review John Hattieās 1200 plus meta studies on the effects of different teaching practices #Prosper4ward
A4: Hey can I show you this awesome new tool that will make your life so much easier? It will save you time grading and your kids will love it! I can even help you make it! What day is a good day to get together? #Prosper4Ward
A4: Observe your Ss doing worksheets all day and tell me what you see?? Is the excitement to learn there!? Engagement is critical in students learning and their WANT to learn. Our kids are not the same every year, and our instruction canāt be either.
#Prosper4Ward#ruckerrocks
I love this! There's something more happening than just worksheets if students are engaged. It may just take fresh eyes to point out the additions that are making the real difference. #Prosper4Ward
Although Iām not an āadvocateā of worksheets. There are beneficial moments for properly developed learning experiences through written form of review. I think teacher created curriculum focused work sheets are okay. But plain busy work, not ok! #Prosper4ward
A4 Worksheets wonāt revolutionize learning. Creating, imagining, and collaborating will. Our kidsā futures depend on their teachers giving them the right opportunities. #kidsdeserveit#Prosper4Ward
A4: Would you want to be a student in your class? Why/why not? I can pretty much guarantee you the answer won't be "yes, because worksheets". #Prosper4Ward
A4. "Can I show you this awesome new tech tool I've been using?" & "There are so many different ways to engage students lets find one your class will love!" #prosper4ward
A4: āBless your heart, letās do an experiment...Iām going to give you a worksheet, then I want you to tell me how engaged you were, and show me how exciting it was, or what connections you were able to make, ready?! #Prosper4Ward
Yes...the answer to many things is not "what" but "how." Presentation is HUGE. It's why the wrapping can often mean as much as the gift inside. #Prosper4ward
āAs important as the information we give is HOW we give itā Important tips on student centered assignments from @leith_tweets this morning! #transformprosper
Thanks #Prosper4Ward for the great chat tonight! Thankful for the partnership we have with so many of your teachers! You all make us better for our students.
A3: collaboration between teacher and students and student to student. Also, errors in my teaching or their learning can be corrected immediately and across all students. I would love more elementary music based technology & so would my students. #Prosper4Ward
Thank you to our hosts tonight and getting to learn and lead together. Let's all be great for kids as we build our group capital here. #Prosper4ward#Bettertogether
In reply to
@PISDLiT, @sullivan_2nd, @MrHaney17, @MrsKincaid_
A4: until someone creates a tech tool for musical composition & improvisation (not garage band) that can assist with standard musical notation (not finale or Sibelius), students will need to practice pen to paper- which isnāt necessarily a bad thing. #Prosper4Ward
Q4 Iād share and help. Being part of a PLC you never criticize you have to encourage and build others capacity to be great! Only through sharing can a community be great #Prosper4Ward
Q3: I havenāt used too much this year. (New teacher probs) but I see the benefit for teacher being less PAPERWORK......and for the student..real-time feedback #Prosper4ward
