#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Welcome to . I'll be your moderator tonight
Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
just curious. teaching at English at juvenile detention
I'm Noah in Denver. Passionate about Badges' power to credential + communicate skills and achievements for users of all ages!
I'm Rich and I'm in California. I work w Ts, badging edtech skills
Awesome to have you here! Don't hesitate to jump in with your unique perspectives!
Hey ! Ben from Santa Cruz! I run and always looking for more ways to help teachers learn about badges!
Great to see you two as always!

Mark from San Diego in a workshop with credential cohort at CSUSM, Say hi to them!
Hola Ben! Thx for being here to offer your POV as a Badge issuing platform!
Hola to you and your cohort! Thx for joining us!

A1: Outside issuers can provide trainings/certs that we may not be able to.
A1: Ss can bring a wealth of experiences, & skills that might not be acknowledged but have value
A1b: I got my MIE Trainer badges from so I can have access to all their resources and community.
Great first answer! Can you say more about that? Examples?
Always a pleasure ! Love me some
ooo, the "Legitimacy" word:) Say more about that...how might outside issuers add this?
Also organize the SoCal symposium, happening at UCI this coming Sat with locals and
Can you share a link for anyone in the area who wants to join y'all?
A1 As one client said, "why reinvent the wheel" -recognize good badges from elsewhere: LRNG, PDLN, VIF, OBA, Badgelist, etc.
A1: There are learning experiences happening everywhere, not just in school! Recognizing them is very important for schools.
A1: It's hubristic for districts to believe only their credentials matter; outside creds belong in narrative of who learner is
This is gonna be great! Wish I could go!
Being Google or Microsoft certified is something I can't offer. Microsoft has a series of badges to earn to get certs
A1Helps your sustainability and helps build consensus about what's good across communities.
I think 's last point is good segway to second question...
Q2: How might we evaluate outside Badges for schools? Which Badges do we accept?
A2: If they follow the school's vision and goals, I think they should be accepted.
Such a great point! These are valuable credentials and should be valued by edu systems!
CSUSM credential candidate Single Subject P.E.
Love tying Badges to Vision/Mission. Would you go by gut or suggest a rubric?
A1 introduced me ideas at so I just wanted to follow tonight I teach at medical magnet school
Great to have you with us Coach!
Welcome to - glad you joined us.
A2b: I wouldn't want to tell a teacher not to pursue a passion or PD opportunity. Hopefully they do it for more than the badge
A2: Look at the learning evidence offered to earn the badge! If there's good evidence, there's reason to endorse the badge
Hi Maggie - so great you can join us!
Great point! Piggybacking on this, should evidence be a requirement? https://t.co/yjM4JuKhrf
A2: Look at the learning evidence offered to earn the badge! If there's good evidence, there's reason to endorse the badge
A2: Depend on locality, might be some badge from existing org that already work with schools? https://t.co/IfhvzyHEHM
Q2: How might we evaluate outside Badges for schools? Which Badges do we accept?
A1: Identify specialized skills of teachers and pre-exisinting interests of students outside the classroom.
Friendly reminder to make sure we all see your tweets by including the hashtag
Wahoo! We have Lloyd in the house!
A2 External frameworks help a lot: ISTE, 21C, ConnectingCredentials, etc. Up in Canada we have Essential Skills
A2 I like that you can see criteria, and option to show evidence
A2-B: In CA we have the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) I got certified in typing and book keeping in HS…
PRO TIPS! Love suggestion to lean on existing tools we know to crosswalk Badges into our systems!
There are activities worth recognizing that are not just about learning. If its a learning badge, evidence is key!
Great convos here...feel free to dwell on with second question even though 3rd is coming in hot!
A2: Might educators map the skills Ss submit to existing standards & count prior demo of skill?
Agreed ! Being able to see the criteria and evidence is crucial to the meaning of the badge
Yes, should be an option. Maybe reasons not to show evidence. Need good criteria/issuer rep though
Do I hear that to mean a sort of vetted list? e.g. If it's from Issuer X, we can trust it
I like that idea, was hoping something existed. How do we create it?
I just look to see if the tech tool will be used in a way that helps/engages students.
Q3: What do we do when 2 Badges from different issuers have the same name?
Thx! External standards help a lot with alignment between badge systems.
True student learning data does need to be kept private within the school context.
For example, if we have multiple Badges called "Padlet Badge" ..how to reconcile? Trust? Value? Accept?
A3: Might the embedded criteria for earning the badge help differentiate?
a3: Look at evidence and articulate levels from that perhaps? depth will vary depending on the what/where/who of the issuer
A3 I wonder if is onto something that would help the CUE Padlet Badge standout from the Noah's Padlet Badge...
Great idea https://t.co/itmVUqoh3E
a3: Look at evidence and articulate levels from that perhaps? depth will vary depending on the what/where/who of the issuer
A3: Again, I think the criteria/evidence piece is key here. The badges should be compared based on demonstrated learning
a3: rather like developing a rubric for badge evaluation of a specific topic maybe?
This "WHO" piece is key, isn't it? Audience for Badge can confer degree of value based on who the issuer is
Yes! Criteria should be the core basis for comparison! https://t.co/pIYAYRFnnr
A3: Might the embedded criteria for earning the badge help differentiate?
Time has really flown by this week! Let's quickly reflect with final question...
Q4: Let’s reflect! What are your takeaways from this week’s chat?
For sure! Also we need a better Alignment field (coming!), e.g.: "This badge aligns to ISTE 12b" - or whatever.
A3: Pretty much the work that I tackle with Credmos. Lots of data isn’t there to resolve well yet :( https://t.co/i5bDAHnV2n
Q3: What do we do when 2 Badges from different issuers have the same name?
A4: Default should be to avoid reinventing the wheel. Existing, known and trusted tools can help inform systems
A4b: We can lean on tools like standards to inform our evaluation of outside credentials
Huge thx to our 1st time chatters/lurkers for joining! Hope to see you back soon!
A4: Need for criteria (& other badge data) to have meaning so it is relevant to anyone who views badge: Ss, Ts, & others
Thanks for your amazing facilitator skills... we ought to create a badge for that:)
A4 One badge system does not rule them all - think ecosystems, transferability, based on shared values, frameworks
so true! https://t.co/fqQxylQjT1
A4 One badge system does not rule them all - think ecosystems, transferability, based on shared values, frameworks
A4: Standards and verification helps create a series of loosely confederated potential assessments. Fun stuff this.
Shoutout to for being here every week to push our thinking!
And to the lurkers, we love ya! It's a form of active engagement and we value that here!
A4 is easy for me I need to research & learn more thanks for letting me follow along
Looking forward to learning more about it - sounds awesome!
Have a Badge worthy week everyone! FYI, we may be on Youtube next week so watch the hashtag for that link
Let us know if we can help with any aspect of getting started - happy to help
I really like "loosely confederated"
And we'll definitely be on YouTube 10/24 to learn about a super cool K12/College collab using Badges in admissions!
