Hi, Tim from CT. Elementary AP. Thank you for hosting!
-
Tonight we are discussing "Fostering an Environment for Growth"
-
Robin Coletrain, Priincipal. Checking in from South Carolina. Love topic
-
A4. I reflect daily, constantly work on relationships, seeking to understand.
-
Is it an environment for Ts? Ss? Both? I need support/ideas for the Ts on my campus!
-
-
Sharin, Middle School AP from outside Milwaukee joining tonight
-
Q2: How can we foster environments that promote growth for teachers?
-
I missed Q1...can some retweet or share?
-
Sharin, Middle School AP from teetering between and tonight. Looks like similar topics, too!
-
A2: provide support through open door policy; regular, but informal checkins b4 school, during conf or after school
-
Brooke, AP from MD jumping in. A2: Create safety in taking risks with new ideas, listening to needs and input.
-
A4. We huddle a lot. Quick meeting in the halllway, constantly work on relationships, seeking to understand, & being trustworthy
-
A2. We huddle a lot. Quick meeting in the halllway, constantly work on relationships, seeking to understand, & being trustworthy
-
Jon, AP from NC joining in! Q2: Relationships with all school stakeholders is key - especially teachers!
-
A2: I'm a big proponent of thinking broad--giving Ts more ownership for what they want to learn, how they will learn it and show it
-
A2) hire folks who are reflective and believe in power of continuous improvement; create environment where feedback is embraced
-
Q3: How can we foster environments that promote growth for students?
-
agree. Teacher directed is important. Different people need different things at different times. Just like students
-
TJ from NC, jumping in. A2) We encourage teacher growth when we help them feel comfortable taking risks.
-
A3: I've seen Ts do some great things with Ss goal setting & 2nd chance learning- showing Ss that room for growth is not weakness
-
A3:by helping our Ts grow we help our Ss grow. Foster an atmosphere that encourages risk taking, even at the risk of failing
-
A3)We start by talking with students about having a growth mindset. Teach them that they have the ability to become their dream.
-
A3) read Mindset! Discuss growth vs fixed mindsets and really dig in with staff - fixed mindset is bit of an epedemic in schools.
-
A3: At the core, going back to basics by 1st knowing our learners. Then, we know where they are at to grow them. Simple, but true
-
A3: From a HS perspective, get rid of grades
-
My question earlier to myself when reflecting on staff/Ts, "How can we expect Ss to have Growth Mindset if WE don't?"
-
A3) make sure structures don't reinforce bad beliefs. In other words, is there tracking? Are instructional groups truly flexible?
-
A3. Relationships, Risk-taking, Acceptance, building on weaknesses. Having a space everyone can see themselves in.
-
And MS! Grades suck the passion out of LEARNING. I'd add, "get rid of x + x = School. Change to x + x + x = LEARNING
-
A3) celebrate growth and progress, not just performance and perfection. For adults and kids.
-
Q3: Admins have 2 model 4 Ts how 2 treat Ss- w/ respect, dignity, compassion. Again relationships are key-in halls, gym, classrooms!
-
I like the 'having a space everyone can see themselves in." and how do we really achieve that?
-
Just discussing the SAME thing over in right now. Get rid of Grades, focus on Learning and Feedback.
-
A3) Also, students become more interested in improving skills when they believe their learning is relevant.
-
Q4: What common barriers keep us from fostering sustainable environment for growth?
-
A4) getting caught up in "adult" issues, being distracted, not focusing on student learning
-
A4: Constraints from District: grading, tests/assessments, checklists, sometimes behaviors, pressure of content/curriculum
-
A4 Status quo and fixed mindset are some of the biggest barriers to fostering sustainable environment for growth.
-
A4: "This is how we've always done it."
-
Lack of staff buy in, unwilling to change/adapt
-
Q5: Final thoughts, resources, and commitments to fostering environments for growth?
-
A5: Continue to hold the bar high. Those who want to, will grow and empower Ss to grow --modeling as a leader helps tremendously!
-
A4) culture of nice prevents progress. We are sometimes more concerned with making adults feel comfortable than we are pushing
-
A5) starts with leaders. Model being a learner, being vulnerable, being challenged. Then expect of T's who will filter to students.
-
A5) this comes to my mind It's time for us all to have the courage to be our best. Take chances. Be bold. Get creative celebrate Ss
-
Be sure to check out our Expert of the Week at the website this Tuesday.
-
A5.Continue to model & set bar, build relationships, be trustworthy, take chances, put Ss first, & Admin need an outlet to breathe
-
Surprised how much I have heard schools talk about students focused on growth, yet nothing changes for the adults
-
-
Be better every day in every way - our students deserve it
-
APs - After 6 yrs managing/supporting leaders, I'm now a coach specializing in teacher Ob/fdbck/eval. Contact me if interested :)
-
Be sure to check out coming up next with my friend and yours
-
In most districts, APs conduct 60-80% of all teacher observations and evaluations. HUGE influence on schools. Ya'll rock!!
-
Mahalo Jared! Appreciate the friendship!
