I'm Diana M. from upstate NY. I work with a scholarship program at a SUNY school. Cold and snowy, but the sun is out and the temperature is on the rise! #preservicelit
It's important to expose students to texts outside of the curriculum to broaden their interests and expose them to all types of writing and genres! @ktkelly14#preservicelit#EDU434
Reading aloud was my favorite when I was a child. It was great to be able to look forward to the next chapter of a novel or a new picture book. Reading and reflecting is a great way to build a classroom community! #Preservicelit
Q1: I celebrated World Read Aloud Day by reading to a group of kinders! I think it is important to read aloud everyday because it can build a tight community in a classroom. The books a teacher can read could help make connections with the students. #preservicelit
A1: I had planned to read to my mom's class yesterday! With the snow though, the roads were very dangerous to drive on so I was unable to make it there to read. #preservicelit
A1: World Read Aloud Day is a great idea, but I think it should be celebrated everyday! I read aloud to my son for twenty minutes! We can promote reading aloud every day by incorporating it into our school days and making it a way for students to be engaged! #preservicelit
A1 Continued: We need to encourage reading aloud to students every day. Teachers should be planning to read aloud very frequently. Educators could also have students read aloud to each other and encourage parents to read aloud to their children every night. #preservicelit
Excited to see how this International conversation about reading works in the world of Twitter! Through as I would say... “Twits”, ha! #preservicelit@ktkelly14
Hi, my name is Ines Cosme, and I am a 7th grade ELA teacher at a public school in the Bronx. I currently attend @UAlbanyEdu, and I am here for #UAELTL615, and #preservicelit.
A1: Yesterday, I created my first lesson plan! In it, students will read aloud a particular math problem and discuss different ways in which they are thinking about how to solve it. #PreServiceLit
A1 Yay for #WorldReadAloud2019. Daily read aloud must be a non-negotiable every day in every grade. I read aloud “I Am Enough” by Grace Byers to discuss identity and how each of us contribute to the beautiful diverse world we live in. #preservicelit
Q1. I didn't get a chance to read aloud on World Read Aloud Day however I plan on reading aloud each day in my classroom and encouraging my students to read aloud with their families. #preservicelit#fsu__20#REED473
A1: As a preservice, teacher, I could privilege read aloud each and every day of the year by encouraging families to read aloud with children daily. #preservicelit@DrKMcGee#fsu_20
A1: Sadly, I was in meetings, so I charged my Ss to read in their placements, or in the room they were subbing in for the day. I believe in the power of reading aloud, so I model it in every class I teach. Schedule it- just like you schedule everything in your day.#Preservicelit
A1: I wasn't in a classroom, but my kids were home for the afternoon. We read LOVE by @mattdelapena and snuggled up for some independent reading. #preservicelit
A1: It is important to have read alouds in the classroom everyday. As a teacher, making sure to set aside a time during the day, maybe just before or after lunch, for read alouds can ensure success. @ktkelly14#EDU331#preservicelit
A1 Read alouds should be a part of everyday: a classroom expectation built into the daily routine! In my house--no kids, just my wife and I in our very late 30s/early 40s--we read aloud regularly! #preservicelit
A1. I don’t have my own class right now, but I did read aloud to my own children yesterday. I read them Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges. I felt this was an important book to share with them. #preservicelit#UAELTL500#UAELTL615
A1: A very wise person once wrote that read alouds are a nonnegotiable cornerstone of effective ELA instruction. Okay, I was that wise person, but still it's an important point! #WorldReadAloudDay#preservicelit
A1: For World Read Aloud Day I started my semester goal of reading a children's book to my current class of 4th graders each day I'm there. As their reading skills vary, I wanted to read books that the entire class could read on their own. #preservicelit#EDU331@ktkelly14
A1 Unfortunately many schools are lockstep test prep and teachers have to adhere to strict procedures and do not have time to do such amazing things like World Read Aloud Day. Our Read Alouds page https://t.co/kfkjfCg9x2#preservicelit
A1: I'm at #SCCTE19 and was particularly inspired by @donalynbooks's presentation. She reminded us the importance of reading aloud to children at every level. I want to read a poem, a passage, or an interesting article to my students every day! @ktkelly14#preservicelit
In reply to
@AffinitoLit, @donalynbooks, @ktkelly14
A1 For world read aloud day my pre-k students celebrated the completion of their own book. This book was based on Moose on the Loose by Kathy-Jo Wargin. A digital copy was shared to all families! Check it out here: https://t.co/ltdEQcgAzN#preservicelit

A1: I LOVE read alouds! My 3rd graders and I read another chapter of EllRay Jakes. I implement read aloud right after lunch. It's a great way to get my students settled and engaged. Having at least 15 minutes in your day will make a difference. #preservicelit#UAELTL615
A1: I read Maybe Something Beautiful in the 4th grade class I was subbing in! We can privelage read alouds everyday by reading aloud everyday to our students. It is a great way to start a lesson or start the day! #preservicelit
Love this @eallen1400 And by reading aloud often, we are giving students an idea of what the goal of reading is. They are exposed to the richness of story and language and the feeling of a reading community! Bravo! #preservicelit#litbankstreet
A1: For World Read Aloud Day I started my semester goal of reading a children's book to my current class of 4th graders each day I'm there. As their reading skills vary, I wanted to read books that the entire class could read on their own. #preservicelit#EDU331@ktkelly14
A2 Continued: Also, with technology becoming a huge initiative in the county there are apps and websites that allows students to have access to many different texts and readings on their iPads.#preservicelit

A2: To ensure a well-stocked classroom library, I think it’s important to have a variety of different books. Different genres, reading levels, culture, etc. It’s also important to always have new books for your students so they will have a variety to choose from. #preservicelit

Great idea to "add in" for
districts choosing an "elearning" component to snow days.
Listen to a Read Aloud.
Ss read aloud and record themselves.
#preservicelit

Good Morning everyone! My name is Camilla, I’m a junior educational studies major here at Furman University! I am interested in non-profits that support children and their families. #preservicelit

I agree, reading aloud is so important allowing students to view educators as a mentor! Students reading is also an excellent way for them to become more confident in their reading ability! #preservicelit#EDU331
A1: For World Read Aloud Day, I collected books and articles celebrating diversity (people, ideas, etc.) for my students! We can privilege read alouds everyday by carving out class time and instilling a passion for texts in our classroom. #preservicelit#edu331@ktkelly14

A2: To ensure a well stocked classroom library, I would make sure to have a variety of genres available for all interests and reading abilities. @ktkelly14#EDU331#preservicelit

A2. Develop a "wish list" of books.
Check to be sure that library reflects students (mirrors, windows, doors a la Bishop), as well as S needs and desires. Create a passion for learning (and reading).

A2. Make texts available year round. Books should NOT fill the shelves in the summer. Ss need access to books to read. Make sure they are available!
#preservicelit
A2:To me, high quality print in a classroom library must include books that give students an opportunity to see themselves in the story. That way students know reading and writing includes them. That might mean finding and adding different quality books each year! #preservicelit

A3: I have not been exposed to many books, which is another reason why I am excited to be a teacher! I will be exposed to different books every day. I’m hoping I can learn about new books that are culturally diverse so I can add to my classroom library! #preservicelit

A2: Students need to have access to books that represent THEM, so I hope to create a library full of books from a variety of genres and interests. I also want them to open up a book, read about a character, and say, "hey! they're just like me!" #preservicelit#EDU331
A2: I keep a running list of my students and peers' beloved texts in the back of my Day Book! Not only do I hope to supply my students with high quality texts, I aspire to give them books they will adore reading and want to pick up again! #preservicelit#edu331@ktkelly14

Here it is! Our final #preservicelit question of the chat. Reply, retweet or create a new tweet with your response, but don’t forget to add A4 and the #preservicelit hashtag!
I read Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion. It's Little Red Riding Hood, with a safari twist. Red, in this story, is also a girl of color. My students were surprised but excited to know that the character could be portrayed any way the author wants. #preservicelit@ktkelly14

Loved hearing about this book, Delaney! Hearing about Ivan finding his own identity and who he is is so important for our students to understand. Books can help us teach so much about inclusivity and diversity! #preservicelit#EDU331
#edu331#Preservicelit Q3 diversity and inclusivity are super important. This past week I did a book talk in @ktkelly14 classroom on The One and Only Ivan. This book was amazing and talked about inclusivity but also being an individual!
A4: As a preservice teacher, I could help students explore their own ideas through writing by allowing them to free writing journal opportunities and completing mini research projects on topics of their interest. #preservicelit@DrKMcGee#fsu_20
A4: #preservicelit I believe that reading & writing are married together. If we want our Ss to feel comfortable writing their own stories, they need to hear stories like their own in the books we read every day in our classrooms.
A4: It’s so important because students need to learn writing skills and they cannot learn them when they are disinterested. Teachers must hold their students attention so that they can learn necessary skills. #preservicelit@ktkelly14
A1: We have more than enough time to read aloud to students, even at the secondary level if we do away with skills based reading comprehension death by worksheets, and actually let Ss read, write, and talk as much as possible in class! #preservicelit
A2: Keeping a well shocked classroom library has been a challenge for me in the past. But, with the amazing help from my school's librarian @NBuddy59 AND a bunch of @DonorsChoose projects funded with great books that I read in @AffinitoLit class!
#preservicelit#UAELTL615
A4: It is important for students to have time to write everyday in a day book where they can record their own thoughts and ideas. #preservicelit#EDU331
A4: I want students (and their teachers) to understand the power their words can have on the world. If we only allow 'schooled' writing, then how will they ever uncover their creative and powerful impacts? #preservicelit
A4: Let's encourage more authentic, engaging ways of writing for a real audience...instead of persuasive essays, turn it into a script for a TV commercial. Instead of how to writing, make it a YouTube script #preservicelit
A3: I adore "The Day You Begin" by Jacqueline Woodson! She writes so beautifully and her message of inclusivity is a powerful tone to kick off the school year in the fall. I also love "Elmer the Elephant" for meeting uniquity with optimism! #preservicelit#edu331@ktkelly14
A4. Choice of topics allows a S to truly develop their writing voice.
Also choice of genre, medium and process are critical to ensure that Ss develop the confidence & expertise that they choose!
#preservicelit
Here it is! Our final #preservicelit question of the chat. Reply, retweet or create a new tweet with your response, but don’t forget to add A4 and the #preservicelit hashtag!
A4 Writing can be tricky because you want to teach students how to write properly while still nurturing creativity and freedom of expression. Finding that balance is a challenge! #preservicelit
A4. It’s important for students to have choice when they write. Students are going to be more engaged and passionate about writing if they have the opportunity to write about topics that matter to them. #EDU331@ktkelly14#preservicelit
A4: Set aside sacred time on a consistent basis. If Ss know that they have time across days/weeks they will build a writing habit --> increased writing volume! #preservicelit
A3: It is so important to have diverse books readily available in the classroom, and it is just as important to be reading them ourselves. I am excited to read "Ready to Fall" by Marcella Pixley this year and present it to my future students! @ktkelly14#EDU434#PreServiceLit
A4: Ask them open ended, opinion-based Q's that they can choose from. S's need structure, but we should not take that to mean limited choices, which then limits their thinking. We can also encourage them to engage in a free write about any given topic. #preservicelit#UAELTL615
Student choice and voice is so important in writing! Students need to be given the opportunity to write about what matters to them! @ktkelly14#edu434#preservicelit
a4: We wants students to be invested in their own learning, when students write about what they are interested in they have the chance to be experts in that topic and can teach us. I think having that perspective of wonder is important. #preservicelit
Here it is! Our final #preservicelit question of the chat. Reply, retweet or create a new tweet with your response, but don’t forget to add A4 and the #preservicelit hashtag!
A4: encourage students to write in a journal. It's a low stress activity where they can express and explore their own opinions. You can give them the option of sharing aloud or keeping it private. #preservicelit
A1: I did not get a chance to celebrate World Read Aloud Day. However, we can have read alouds every day of the year by reading students new books everyday that pertain to their interests. We can also have students read aloud to each other. #preservicelit
#preservicelit#edu331We can help students explore their own ideas by writing about what they want to write about, not a prompt. It is important for the students to gain their own voice. it is also important for them to read to learn what other people think.
A3. Some of my very favorites are featured here! The Day You Begin, Last Stop on Market Street, and Drawn Together are all fabulous books. Each one uses diverse characters and vivid illustrations to celebrate and honor relationships with one another. #preservicelit#EDU434
Q4: Allowing students the opportunity to explore their own ideas through writing is one of my main goals. I want my students to gain agency through their writing and become advocates for not only themselves, but those around them. #preservicelit@ktkelly14
Two books that I defiantly need to have in my classroom are “The Day You Begin” by Jacqueline Woodson and “Drawn Together” by Mink Lê #preservicelit@ktkelly14
A3: You're Here for a Reason by Nancy Tillman, Love by Matt de la Pena, and The Big Umbrella by Amy and Juniper Bates are my current favorites! #preservicelit#EDU331
A4: Time + choice to write about what they want, preferably in response to something they've read. I can think of few things more valuable. #preservicelit
Can we get students obsessed with writing! Writing is all about self expression and having a voice. If we can provide children with the space they need to discover how to express themselves through writing, could we guide them to an obsession? #preservicelit
A4: This is important because it helps them grow as individuals, writers, readers, as well as share their authentic views on any given topic. This also builds their confidence. #preservicelit#UAELTL615
A4: It encourages them to think about personal stories throughout there life. Engage students in this to show that writing can be a fun and creative process instead of writing to a prompt. Students may be aware of proper grammar techniques. @ktkelly14#EDU331#preservicelit
I love this! The consistency is key, often Ss can get anxious to get everything done at once, w/ a regular writing habit you are removing that anxiety. #preservicelit
A4. Students need to have choice when they write: choice in topic, choice in genre, choice in audience. This encourages them to use writing as advocacy and to take action! #preservicelit@ktkelly14
A4: The best way to help students explore their own ideas & opinions is to supply them with various texts so they can make their own INFORMED opinions! Texts should come from diverse perspectives & genres to prevent the danger of a single story. #preservicelit#edu331@ktkelly14
A2: We must not fall into the trap of collecting books that only tell a single story! Our library should include diversity of texts, genres, and perspectives. Allowing all children to see themselves in the text is essential! #preservicelit#EDU331@ktkelly14
Thank you to all #preservicelit educators chatting today! Let’s keep the rich conversation alive and slow chat throughout the month. The archive of our chat will be posted soon!
A4: Students should have the opportunity to choose what they write! As teachers we can support their chosen topics by encouraging their ideas and conferencing with them to guide them through the writing process! #preservicelit
Q4: Allowing students to express themselves through writing shows students how much we value them and their opinions. When we show students we value them, and give them a voice, there is no limit to what they can achieve! #preservicelit@ktkelly14
A4: Connect reading and writing through integrated learning if/when possible. What are Ss reading that they want to write about? It's not about prompts to prepare for state testing, it's about writing about topics that ignite curiosity & passion. #preservicelit
A4: I plan to incorporate more creative, authentic writing in the classroom to allow students to have a voice! I am integrating opinion writing through advertisements in my Math PBL unit this month. #PreserviceLit#EDU434@ktkelly14
A4: We can provide books and other opportunities such as workshop projects that reflect what our students are interested in. This is why I find it so important to get to know our students as individuals and provide content that relates to them. @ktkelly14#EDU434#PreServiceLit
A2: To ensure a well stocked classroom library, be sure to have books of all different reading levels, genres, and even some in multiple languages. Also, get to know your students' interests and have books that relate to their interests. #preservicelit
When students are given the opportunity to write about what is important to them, they become lifelong writers and at the end of the day that is what we are here to teach: the joy and passion of making your thoughts heard through literacy @ktkelly14#edu434#preservicelit
A4: By providing books about social issues in the classroom library as well as access to current event magazines either online or in print #PreserviceLit
A4: Yesterday, I watched one of my students compose his own story the way he wanted it. He talked to me about what should come next. No prompt, just him. His story was all that he wanted it to be. I hope to create a classroom where this is the reality #preservicelit#EDU331
A4: In #EDU331 we’ve discussed how the writing process should mimic our natural writing habits. No strict prompts & allow students to write how they feel is best. As educators we are meant to guide each student’s individual skill. Help them tame their own style. #preservicelit
A4: Students should have the opportunity to choose what they write! As teachers we can support their chosen topics by encouraging their ideas and conferencing with them to guide them through the writing process! #preservicelit#EDU434
A4: Student voice and choice should be encouraged in the classroom. It can be useful for students to have an idea journal or daybook for them to expand on topics that they are passionate about. Frequent peer and teacher conferencing can support this. #preservicelit
A3: #preservicelit i think it is also really important to start redefininy what it means to be diverse especially in light of childrens learning. Diverse doesnt mean one culture or person of color respresented in contrast to a book with only white children/people. #litbankstreet
A3: I love reading aloud, my favorites are: Bud, Not Buddy, Esperanza Rising, Crossover, Amal Unbound, A Poem for Peter, and for a quick read aloud at the end of the day Young, Gifted and Black. I read a page at dismissal every day. @ava#preservicelit#UAELTL615
A2 We must share about books and stay up to date with own voice texts and award winning books. We must also critically analyze text for stereotyping and tokenism. Check out our new book for lots of suggestions! https://t.co/3znWiKmy4A#ReadingToMakeADiference#preservicelit
Two books that I definitely need to have in my classroom are “The Day You Begin” by Jacqueline Woodson and “Drawn Together” by Mink Lê #preservicelit@ktkelly14
A3: #preservicelit i think it is also really important to start redefininy what it means to be diverse especially in light of childrens learning. Diverse doesnt mean one culture or person of color respresented in contrast to a book with only white children/people. #litbankstreet
A4: I think we can help students explore there own ideas and thoughts through oral conversation first. Then, model it in writing. Students should also know that writing is a form of conversation. #preservicelit@ktkelly14
A4: We have to instill our students with a true love of writing and how writing is the doorway to self-expression and communication with others around us. #preservicelit#EDU331
A4 It’s important for our students to feel that their voices are heard. Allow them to explore causes that are important to them. They can write letters, make posters, write emails, etc to help bring awareness #preservicelit
A4: #preservicelit i currently teach 4/5s & they are not quite writing yet and some chidlren are not creating representaional drawings yet but we do story acting. This is when children create a story, teachers dictate and then their peers act it out. #litbankstreet
Here it is! Our final #preservicelit question of the chat. Reply, retweet or create a new tweet with your response, but don’t forget to add A4 and the #preservicelit hashtag!
A3: Moses Goes to a Concert by Issac Millman! I think we often for get to include text that includes characters with various abilities. Story’s have powerful messages that set classroom expectations! #Preservicelit#EDU331@ktkelly14
A3: I have always liked the Dr. Seuss series. I think it is a fun series for children of all ages that will keep them guessing what will happen next. #Preservicelit
Did you get to hear @lesleanewman last year when she came to Furman? So inspiring and we are so thankful for her voice and her work! We feature some of her work in our new book! #preservicelit#EDU331

@GigglinJ, @lesleanewman, @YangsookChoi, @lesleanewman
I agree! I have my students write journal entries. Their prompts are often a combination of creative writing prompts and prompts that allow them to view different perspectives. I like to link what we’re learning about or discussing into their journals. #edu615#preservicelit
A4: Using a daybook. Get rid of worksheets, give them something they can personalize. This is SO important because when we let students write their opinion, you are telling them that their story matters. #preservicelit#EDU331@ktkelly14
A4: Students can explore their own ideas on topics by free writing about what matters to them, and then share ideas with classmates to see new ideas and viewpoints. Students will be more motivated to write when free writing. #preservicelit
So true. Wonder what creative things schools are doing to get these books in homes in summer? When we were in Finland we learned they open the school library as a public library and free gym too! #preservicelit
Yes! My library is full of a variety of genres. I also have a combination of chapter books, picturebooks, and books that cover themes of diversity. #edu615#preservicelit
Joining the chat late. This is my first time seeing the chat but it looks like one that interests me. I'm Bill, a teacher educator in St. Louis. #preservicelit#preservicelit
My school just had a book swap day, so I had my students bring in their favorite books, and share the title, genre, author, a little explanation and why they love the book. Some even shared series. They LOVED it and are now reading each other’s books! #edu615#preservicelit
A: 4. Acceptance is a key. I talked of this topic just last night with my wife who is from China. A major challenge for her is feeling accepted. Same is often true for our students. Let's be welcoming. Celebrate diversity and strengths (e.g. funds of knowledge) #preservicelit
A4 The Other Side- J. Woodson “Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real/imagined, familiar/strange. A window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us”
Rudine Sims Bishop #preservicelit
I’m a first year T and I started collecting books last year as a student T. This year my Ss give me book requests to build help our small library & I order them. I love watching their excitement as the books they requested arrive. #preservicelit

Diana, this is a definite challenge for me, but I began the school year with creative writing, then I had them peer edit, and I’m just now beginning to edit their work myself. I wanted to get their ideas flowing first and allow the pure joy of just writing. #edu615#preservicelit
