#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
A1 In my 100% choice art room with flexible seating some students have trouble with figuring out appropriate space and sharing materials. Some Ss also struggle with not distracting others from doing their best work. Important skills to work on for sure! #k12artchat
A1, I’ve noticed Ss struggling with confidence & many struggle with accepting compliments or suggestions from peers. I also have some that have a huge deficit in social communication & they have trouble working in groups #k12ArtChat
A1: I was placed in a headstart classroom this last year and I noticed several of my students, even those as young as 2 & 3 years old suffered from anxiety. Many did not have good home lives and were overly shy or timid with a few non-vocal children. #K12artchat#EDSP454
A2: I created a “Relationship Action Team”, made up of Ts, to use/teach restorative circles, relationship agreements, & behavior reflection activities to build healthy student relationships & teach appropriate behavior. #K12ArtChat#AspireLead
A2, I had a S that had a difficult time in K- couldn’t express himself in proper ways, acted out against peers, became extremely frustrated at challenges. This year, he had very few breakdowns & was able to use his calming techniques to work through situations #k12ArtChat
A2 Many students find success in collaboration and self-confidence in their ability to create. In my room all voices are honored so students can find success regardless of products, we celebrate process. Interests are shared and possibility is expanded. #k12artchat
A3 the arts help learners conpregend their lives. Through the arts a wide range of voices can find success. Students can learn to take risks, try new things, and create art that speaks even with limited skills. The arts foster joy and connection. Making is merry. #k12artchat
One of the greatest benefits of our social emotional learning program is that it gave a sense of permission to prioritizing connecting w/ students & considering their emotional health, my teaching has extended beyond mere curriculum #K12ArtChat
A3, Just about every class, “ We are all different. No one in the room draws or colors the same. Plus if we did , it sure would be a boring world.” We’re all artists & it is our responsibility to practice different techniques to find what we’re successful at the most! #k12ArtChat
Finally sat down from a crazy busy day and realized I have missed #K12ArtChat BUT I did have a phenomenal interview today and played in my garden. So. Summer has kind of taken over my life.
One of the greatest benefits of our social emotional learning program is that it gave a sense of permission to prioritizing connecting w/ students & considering their emotional health, my teaching has extended beyond mere curriculum #K12ArtChat
Q1: my students had many difficulties this year because of a need for self regulation skills and strategies. Language, talk time vs listening time, needing adults who cared about them.. juvenile records. #K12ArtChat
A4 For most students the art room is a social experience. Private Art is often made publicly. It’s a burden to some but it adds a social dynamic that fosters companionship that can often be surprising and spark conversations and ideas that often would be buried. #k12artchat
Q1: I learned kids really craved structure and I actually had kids wander into my room because they were Looking for consistency in consequences and procedures they weren’t getting. These were the kids that gave teachers all kinds of problems everywhere else. #K12ArtChat
Q4: it teaches Ss how to ask and give feedback from peers & how to use that feed back to improve their work instead of getting angry/sad abt it! #K12ArtChat
A4, I personally try to compliment those students that I know need a little boost- not only on something they may have created but maybe their good choices, behavior
, or doing something positive without prompt. I try to find the good & highlight it. #k12ArtChat
A4: the arts allow them to see that everyone has struggles and that the arts are a way for someone to release those feelings in a positive way. #k12artchat
A4-When students create together it enhances relationships and builds a special bond. My classroom is always full at recess time when students from different grades come to ‘Arty’-create art and socialize #k12ArtChat
Q1: I learned kids really craved structure and I actually had kids wander into my room because they were Looking for consistency in consequences and procedures they weren’t getting. These were the kids that gave teachers all kinds of problems everywhere else. #K12ArtChat
A5: making critical decisions is risky so giving Ss the skills and confidence to evaluate a problem, think of a solution, and implement it in a safe environment can be mirrored in their life choices! #K12ArtChat
Well said. I often talk about how our interpretations to music is a great way to see how different we all really are...and that's ok and beautiful! #K12ArtChat
Q2: successes would be 1. One of my Ks went from screaming tantrums to happily listing off colors when he would get frustrated to cool down. 2. Having students work on found object sculptures and giving them a destruction day to let out their frustrations #K12ArtChat
A5, Art is always about making choices. Ss have to decide the right media to use for the situation. If there is a mistake, how can they fix it - which leads to exploration, imagination & risk taking. Ss begin to build that courage & develop strong character #k12ArtChat
A5: The arts allow for lots of choices and it gives Ss a soft landing when a choice doesn't work out so they can learn from missteps - we learn from every choice positive or negative #K12ArtCHat
Q2: 3. giving students time to share stories before starting instruction. 4. Collaborative projects and planning.. being a human for my students so they could see real reactions and emotion.. being respectful to the tough kids and gaining their patience and trust #K12ArtChat
A3: time management is key in a visual art classroom. My Ss learn how to plan plan and plan some more before getting into an actual project. They are always surprised at how smoothly the project goes after the planning! #k12artchat
A5: I talk to my Ss abt how important it is to be helpful to others when looking for feedback. (Just say it looks nice doesn't help anyone get better). Once they see the positive, it only makes things better. #K12ArtChat
A5 In my choice based art room students have to make choices. Like all skills, quantity is the path to quality. Students learn to make choices by making choices and receiving feedback (internal or external). The arts provide a platform to explore all kinds of skills. #k12artchat
A6: art is such a natural connection to #sel -it just fits- but I think make it a more intentional connection and an overt target is important #K12ArtChat
A6: going back to Q1, learning positives ways to deal with the stresses of life. And learning that the stresses won’t go away but can be managed. #k12artchat
A4 I often have Ss from another class or independent study who may encourage a Ss from a new perspective. The Art room is a safe place where Ss seem to be more vunerable w/ each other. #K12artchat
Thanks for the great chat! Nice to talk #sel and art with all of you tonight. The arts matter because they help us explore, comprehend and communicate our human experience. Keep up the good fight!cheers. #k12artchat
