The #INeLearn hashtag is used for both asynchronous sharing and synchronous conversations. Include #INeLearn in your tweets if you want to share resources or questions with Indiana educators and school leaders. Asynchronously, the #INeLearn hashtag provides educators across the state of Indiana a central space for sharing. On Thursday evenings beginning at 8 CST/9 EST when you use the #INeLearn hashtag, you are joining a live conversation--the #INeLearn Twitter Chat. For one hour, we interact in real time having a virtual discussion.
Welcome to tonight’s #INeLearn chat! I’m Amy, principal/lead learner from Angola, your moderator tonight!
We are continuing our series on Digital Opportunities! Tonight, our focus is on Exposing Digital Myths!
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for private online HS (IUHS). Won't be able to stay for entire chat but hoping to keep an eye on both #sstlap and #INeLearn.
R1: Ss may be comfortable with technology & digital media but that doesn't mean they know how to use it effectively, safely, or educationally. #INeLearn
R1-This myth has kicked our butts in our corporation. Our kids know how to text, tweet, and snap. They aren't so good with problem solving their devices, sending apprpriate emails, or accessing files they've saved (is it on the laptop or the network?).
#INeLearn
R1: Making this assumption is an equity issue. Not all students have had equal opportunities to learn/explore. It's more accurate to say they're naturally curious and adaptable. Teachers, experienced with tech or not, must help guide the use educationally. #INeLearn
R1 "Fortunately" there has been of evidence to debunk this myth. Our generation of students may not be afraid to jump into new tools, but effective use is more than instinct-there is a lot of learning to do #INeLearn
R1: our Ss for the most part have been around tech all their lives but that doesn’t mean they are responsible. That’s why #DigCit is important for us to teach. We should offer #PD for both Ts and Ss. Maybe together. #INeLearn
R1: I don’t know that they know more about tech than we do, but they are for sure more comfortable trying to figure it out. I often find myself learning WITH Ss, and it’s a good thing. #INeLearn
I think many are in the same boat! Assuming kids know all about the digital world can lead to learning and management issues. We need to have honest convos on how to intentionally teach these skills. #INeLearn
Our corporation has made it a goal to provide resources to help the Ss create a site both Ts and Ss can refer to when they need a refresher on our devices, apps, tools, etc.
#INeLearn
R2: Nope!! The TEACHER is the solution to increasing student engagement in the classroom!! If a piece of technology can replace a teacher....it probably should!!
#INeLearn#EdTech#Myth
R2: Engaging -> empowering lessons are the key. Tech can make that easier sometimes! But it makes classroom management skills on our part and teaching self-discipline skills on our students' part even more important to make tech-infused, engaging lessons possible. #INeLearn
R2: Nope!! The TEACHER is the solution to increasing student engagement in the classroom!! If a piece of technology can replace a teacher....it probably should!!
#INeLearn#EdTech#Myth
R2 technology can certainly be engaging and help remove barriers bit to be truely engaging teachers have to create meaningful learning experiences techie or not #INeLearn
R2 Technology is an amplifier. Simply put, if the teacher is engaging, it will be; if the T or the lesson is not, then it will be a distration #INeLearn
R2: I have had this conversation this week. You can have all the tech out there but knowing how to create meaningful and engaging activities with what you have is what is the most important. #INeLearn
R2 technology can certainly be engaging and help remove barriers bit to be truely engaging teachers have to create meaningful learning experiences techie or not #INeLearn
Technology may briefly increase engagement at first, but simply using technology as a substitute for non-engaging tasks will not increase engagement. #INeLearn
R2: it is the understanding of pedagogy that is the true area where engagement starts. It’s the big ideas that Ts can develop passion for the content. After this, tech can come in and help. #INeLearn
It all starts with the learning outcome. What do we want kids to know & be able to do? Pedagogy, instructional strategies are key, no matter what! #INeLearn
R2: The key to student engagement is not the technology it's the teacher. When you pair an innovative, inspring, enthusiastic teacher with the right technology the sky is the limit on student engagement. #INeLearn
Another caveat is that you can have totally engaging activities that have nothing to do with the learning goals. Just sayin' my kid loved creating stop motion but not everything should be stop motion #INeLearn
R3: NO! We need to teach As to be responsible digital citizens. Don't punish the 95% who will follow the rules for the 5% that wont. Proper consequences are in place for a reason. #INeLearn
R3: If they don't get a chance to learn & develop good digital citizenship & safety skills in school, let's face it - many won't get them at all. #INeLearn
R3 Of course, a good filter is important in school, but blanket blocking (like YouTube) keeps Ss form many valuable resources. Also, Ss have to learn to filter for themselvws bc the real world has no filter #INeLearn
R3: Training wheels are one thing. I sometimes wonder, though, if we aren't just making it worse by leading students to proxy servers the more we block. Like everyone else said, digital citizenship is the key. #INeLearn
R3: There are dangers and negatives in driving on our nations roads, but we don't park our cars, we teach. Same for the Internet, we teach digcit #INeLearn
This ties into the @INeLearn book club--why give our Ss these tools if we're limit their use? This is part of teaching them to be responsible consumers AND creators of tech. #INeLearn
R3 I know @AmyHeavin had to go to the extremes on this one. We need to do risk analysis and filter, but not with the mindset of that making the web "safe". We have to teach our Ss how to be safe #DigCit#INeLearn
Rules are for those 5% that have a difficult time. That’s when we provide alternative opportunities for those indivuals and learning opportunities that reinforce #DigCit#INeLearn
R3: There are dangers and negatives in driving on our nations roads, but we don't park our cars, we teach. Same for the Internet, we teach digcit #INeLearn
And sometimes those pushing the limits are Ss trying to become more engaged in tech. Empower them by teaching them the right way to push those limits with #DigCit. You won’t know if you carpet block them #INeLearn
R4 I chuckled earlier when this started being addressed (even by our moderator). Preaching to the choir. But what do we say to the real worrierers? #INeLearn
R4: Just had this convo with a student. It's on us to give them opportunities to collaborate and break down walls with the digital/connected tools they use at school. Otherwise, yeah, kid, here's my youtube channel. Go learn somethin'. #inelearn
R4: I think it's our responsibility to make sure we're irreplaceable. Any teacher doing strictly DOK1 and only worksheets can be replaced by a YouTube video and multiple choice quiz. #INeLearn
Teaching is an art and a science. It takes a person to design learning experiences that will help each child move at his/her pace through skills and content. People teach. Not computers. #INeLearn
R4 think of tech as a LEVER or other machine that enables a teacher to do more, reach more, etc. BUT remember a lever needs a fulcrum such as supportive administrators, sufficient resources, etc. #INeLearn
R4: FAKE NEWS. The only things getting replaced are outdated methods. Teachers are as vital to our future as ever. Technology doesn’t teach responsibility, creativity, innovation, etc...those things require a passionate teacher. #INeLearn
R4: if AI ever gets really good, MAYBE. But is AI going to care about Ss and allow Ss to interact with all stakeholders and teach the 4Cs and be the caring individual for them? #INeLearn
R2: Tech is not a solution, merely a tool. As teachers over the years we have gained many tools to help increase student engagement. Tech can help, but it’s more about what is the purpose behind the lesson u r using the tech. Tech is just 1 tool 2 enhance the learning. #INeLearn
@JeremyDBond Plagiarism for one. How many teachers take images from Google for "educational use" without regard to copyright? Many if not most. #DigCit#INeLearn
R4--There's no doubt that tech has enhanced what a T can do; but the human side of the Ss isn't nurtured by a device. I don't see this ever changing. #INeLearn
Likewise, when we talk about creating learning experiences, that's exactly what they have to be--experiences. I can't imagine tech replacing a teacher on that front. #INeLearn
In the end, we are all still human beings who crave communication and connection with other human beings regardless of technology. One reason why there are so many problems. We don't connect enough with others?? #INeLearn#DigCit
Valid point. I know at the HS I came from our credit recovery IA was phenomenally compassionate and helpful to those students, but she wasn't a T and she didn't have the broad knowledge base. #INeLearn
R5: Not sure its any higher than on pencil/paper assignments. Just makes it... easier. When I taught in a computer lab I saw them searching all day long for online answer keys to their other teachers' worksheets and packets. #inelearn
R5: I think we have to reexamine our definition of cheating. Is it cheating or using our resources? If you have an assignment where Ss can Google the answer, is it a quality assignment? #INeLearn
R5: Cheating happens when the teacher becomes disconnected with the class. That can happen with or without the use of technology. Ts need to "be present" at all times #INeLearn
R5: Ts need to learn to make their assignments and assessments Un-Google-able. @micheeaton has lead a great session on this. Ts need to be more creative = more engaging. "Be more interesting than the technology!!"
#INeLearn#EdTech#Myth
R4: was thinking about the Star Trek Voyage Home where Scotty picks up the mouse of a computer and speaks into it “Hello, Computer?” Tech can’t interact with us like this yet. #INeLearn
R5 11th grade chemistry: class of 30 kids. 2 didn't cheat on the final. My brilliant best friend and me who was certain my mother would find out (she worked in the office). Year: 1986. Pretty sure the odds are the same for 2018. #INeLearn
The care and relationship a teacher can give to a student will never be replaced by technology. Teachers are the designers for learning experiences. #INeLearn
R5: Students have found ways to cheat since the beginning of time. Tech may make it sneakier, but it's still up to us to remain one step ahead and/or to choose assessments where cheating isn't so easy we're practically begging them to do it. #INeLearn
R4 what ought to intrigue us teachers is putting the lever (technology) in the hands of the students...that's ENGAGEMENT & EMPOWERMENT so students can decide which "loads to lift", i.e. what they want to learn (with teachers pointing some of the "loads", i.e. questions) #INeLearn
R5: Not sure its any higher than on pencil/paper assignments. Just makes it... easier. When I taught in a computer lab I saw them searching all day long for online answer keys to their other teachers' worksheets and packets. #inelearn
A5: Tech can take away traditional cheating as there isn’t “copying” occurring but rather students are searching for answers, which is learning and discovery. #INeLEARN
So important learning experiences go beyond simple recall, regurgitation of memorized content. If it can be Googled, then we are not challenging our students to think! #INeLearn
I think this does apply-especially in metropolitan areas where choice is prevalent; parents can be sold that "personalized" learning is the solution #INeLearn We wouldn't do that with workbooks, but somehow the screen makes it okay.
R5: what are students creating, curating, and sharing with an authentic audience. It’s not “fun” to do a worksheet and share or take a multiple choice test. There are better ways to do summative and formative assessments. #INeLearn
R5 it's a tragedy when students don't want to work in groups because some students don't do their share of the work, but tech can reveal WHO isn't participating by leaving an audit trail and by documenting attribution #INeLearn
So glad you brought up the word collaboration. Collaboration is a key skill for the workforce. I guess I use collaboration a lot daily! Embrace it & give kids this opportunity! #INeLearn
R6: Openness to new methods, ideas, techniques using technology along with good planning will result in effective technology use in the classroom #INeLearn
R6: Being a techie master isn't required, but Ts have to be comfortable with what they are using. Pick 2-3 tools and get comfortable with those, then move on to another new thing, and so on. It's a process. Rome wasn't built in a day.
#INeLearn
R6 There is still a lot of work to be done on dispelling this one, but I believe #INeLearn coaches are hard at work sharing Ts stories that prove this wrong!
R6: my former school had a group of ed tech leaders in Ss that show Ts how to utilize tech in their rooms. @PIT_Crew_ and @grizgoat are doing great things with Ts tat are NOT tech gurus. #INeLearn
Last couple of years in particular I've been building towards performance assessments (DIY Row Games or a Desmos Art for conic sections) for exactly that reason. It's never 100% cheat/plagarism proof, but it's a deeper learning experience. Fair trade-off. #INeLearn
R6: An oxymoron, tech constantly changes, thus it will never be mastered. To use effectively, Ts must be willing to be learning masters - constantly looking for ways to engage and improve. #INeLearn
R6: To use tech in the classroom, teachers only need two things: a willingness to give it a shot, and the ability to be okay in case it doesn't work out. #INeLearn
I strongly believe a school’s culture can debunk this myth too. When we all share, create, collaborate, and help each other, we are all in this together, learning together, to bring great experiences for our kids. #INeLearn
Ts and Ss can learn together in this wonderful world that has #HSDLead :) Learn all about it (and bring a team to the spring conference!) https://t.co/auayolPASH#INeLearn
R6: An oxymoron, tech constantly changes, thus it will never be mastered. To use effectively, Ts must be willing to be learning masters - constantly looking for ways to engage and improve. #INeLearn
Unfortunately, many Ts think that if they are getting observed and the lesson bombs that they will get docked. There has to be some trust with Admins as well that, just like Ss, it is ok to have unexpected results #INeLearn
R6: To use tech in the classroom, teachers only need two things: a willingness to give it a shot, and the ability to be okay in case it doesn't work out. #INeLearn
R6: An oxymoron, tech constantly changes, thus it will never be mastered. To use effectively, Ts must be willing to be learning masters - constantly looking for ways to engage and improve. #INeLearn
Trust and relationships are everything in teaching. To follow what you said, the lesson is more likely to bomb if the students' relationship/trust with their teacher is low. #INeLearn
R7: digital leaders can be the shy kid in the corner or could be the all conference athlete. It can be any stakeholder in the school that wants to use tech and be engaged. #INeLearn
R7 Yes, District and School Admin can be Digital Leaders. Especially if they are learners and participate in FocusForums https://t.co/RyQ0xazsIx, BUT they are not the only ones! #INeLearn
R7: Digital leaders can be anyone, not just school/district admins. Strong vision at the admin level is helpful, though! It's what makes risk-taking for others much more manageable. #INeLearn
Leaders are not leaders just because of a title or position. It is what leaders DO daily that makes them who they are - digital or not, leaders are those who inspire, empower, & lead the way! #INeLearn
Leaders are not leaders just because of a title or position. It is what leaders DO daily that makes them who they are - digital or not, leaders are those who inspire, empower, & lead the way! #INeLearn
R7 As a "digital leader" my goal is to foster and encouage other digital leaders at all levels... students, teachers, anyone! Anyone can be a digital leader and inspiration #INeLearn
R7: anyone willing to learn can be a digital learner. We all learn for different purposes. Being willing to share what we know is crucial for collaboration. #INeLearn
WU it is a digital myth that states like #Indiana are "backward" as some folks claim. #Indiana is a digital leader because of all of you especially our good friends at #INeLearn
Wrap up: my digital myth is that you have to know/do it all. Pick a couple tech tools and stick with them. Ss appreciate a chance to get comfortable too #INeLearn
We are just implementing @CanvasLMS. I'm so jealous I don't get to teach with it! I love Padlet and Screencastify as well. Have you used Mentimeter? #INeLearn
WU: I'd like to debunk the myth that tech-infused lessons are automatically better. We lose if we aren't always trying to evaluate our delivery method/assessment method in the context of what's best for our students--and sometimes, that's not tech. #INeLearn
A: That using technology results in adolescents who are disconnected. We have to show how technology today gives us the opportunity to connect with the world around us like never before. #INeLearn
WrapUp #Myth: "I'm too old to learn and use technology."
Nope!! I'd much rather work with a willing "more experienced" educator than a stubborn, thinks-they-know-it-all newby any day!!
#INeLearn#EdTech#Myth
Wrap up: The old fashioned way is best. Be it paper note-taking or holding a book. Studies cannot prove anything until we have properly learned the digital skills. In the meantime, balance is reasonable. #INeLearn
Thanks to @AmyHeavin for leading the debunking discussion tonight. Great as always. Thanks for all the engagement and thought provoking convo. #INeLearn
