About to start up #PBLChat. Some norms - let’s have some #realtalk to move past the echo chamber. Push and be pushed. Beginner’s Mind about our topic. Sound OK?

A1: Sometimes, we don’t have PD that is personalized and meaningful. We have to move past the “one size fits all” PD model and more individualized among educators. #PBLChat
If you prefer to watch the video cast of my interview with @katiemartinedu, you can watch it here: https://t.co/dyFrQqC8wa New episode of The Dr. Will Show is live.
A1: Sometimes, we don’t have PD that is personalized and meaningful. We have to move past the “one size fits all” PD model and more individualized among educators. #PBLChat
A1 Rather than one-off initiative-driven PD days, teachers need their professional learning experiences to fit together as a purposeful, coherent system aligned to our school values—much like the units of study we design for our students. https://t.co/3xO8C5atrM#pblchat
A1 - Personalization - Co-constructed goals (and ASPIRATIONS!!) and guide/collaborator/thought partner on the side while simultaneously modeling how #edtech platforms can support this. Some team, some individual, just like great #pbl#pblchat
#realtalk I imagine the lack of time & multitude of stress make it hard for admin and central office people to plan innovative PDs a lot of the time. It would be easier for me to lecture to my students all day too... #PBLchat
A dream of a teacher...PD with clear objectives, Ts that come with K/NTKs to drive our learning as a staff that isn't focused on the less important details or the "I/we can't." #pblchat PD that provides deep thinking and pushes us out of our comfort zone!
A1: We often want to be innovative and creative in teaching our kids, but want to put teachers and educators in a “sit and get” PD. We have to do the same with our adults. #PBLChat
Any good lesson plan includes differentiation, continuity, clear outcomes, etc -- all of things many of us are mentioning. PD planners have the opp to tap into their true educator selves & we'd all benefit I think #PBLchat
A1 - Aaaand a moment of gratitude and a big shout out to some of the AMAZING #PD experiences (and designers) I've been fortunate enough to have been a part of! #pblchat
I think that would provide a much more meaningful, authentic, and powerful experience for all educators if this was the approach to our PD sessions that are already so limited on time! #PBLchat
A2 - Experiencing the practice being targeted first-hand in the design of the experience itself....i.e. great modeling! And then having structured opportunities to reflect and connect #pblchat
A2: most meaningful PD ever was at the #deeperlearning summit @hightechhigh - because it models DL so well through formal and informal sessions and play time! #pblchat
A2) LOVED my experience via National Equity Project-tapping into my story & personal journey, time for reflection, application & lots of thought-push. #pblchat
A2: Experiencing a project through a project simulation experience. Placed into groups, given a deliverable, provided resources and the opportunity for application. Presented to a live audience. All as a learner, not a leader. #PBLChat
A2: PD that provided a clear objective, clear outcomes, & a clear road map. PD that honors what we are doing & helps us build upon best practices through inquiry & agency of our own learning. I personally love PD that pushes me out of my comfort zone. #pblchat#criticalthinking
A2: I like choice and finding PD that will help me to become a better educator. Also, being able to collaborate with other colleagues and reflect on what I have learned. I’ve also been able to take what i learned and apply it to practice the next day. #PBLChat
A2: best PD ever? My #newtechnetwork training with @jodihawk! No assuming I knew the jargon or concepts, no condescending attitudes when I needed clarification, offered tons of differentiation when I needed workshops & 1-on-1 #PBLChat
A2:CLMOOC (https://t.co/dbWXmMxaDb) - informal online summer institute which applies connected learning principles. Have established long-term community of (virtual) colleagues. #pblchat
A2: I experience some math PD as a teacher w/ @geoffkrall & I appreciated time to really process and the feeling that I was competent and adding to the work around me #PBLchat
Doing the NTN badges was so helpful for me because it was at my own pace and it really made me evaluate and evolve what I was doing in the classroom. Don’t be afraid of teacher paced PD #PBLchat
A2 #pblchat - best PD I have had is PD that is relevant, personal, directly related to what I am doing and involves the people with whom I am working with daily. The experts are around us each day, they provide all the motivation a person needs not “guru quotes & tweets”!
A2 - We've been leading Project Slice experiences, one is with a biomimicry invention design challenge that has been fun to lead (and LEARN in) as well as model the #pbl process...so cool to see Ts sharing their work and connecting to authentic problems! #pblchat
A2 Great PD—like a great lesson—includes a clear outcome, a meaningful progression toward that outcome, a practical (make & take) or experiential (do as students will do) component, and reflection with colleagues. #pblchat
A2 - We have been exploring more opportunities for teacher externships and personalized #pd that is embedded AND that earns graduate credit (not just cont. edu) #pblchat
A2:A sense of all belonging in the PD & owning our work. We can't overlook the need 2 feel like we r all n this together & through the work we will succeed.Respect that we are all in different places n our learning & the ability to lean on each other during this journey. #pblchat
Great PD has a #designthinking basis - drawn from the experience of the people involved with an emphasis on contextual problem solving and learning. #pblchat
Yes, and! ... that this collaboration is normed or with roles or somehow structured so that it's equitable. (You know I can't go a convo without plugging this haha) #PBLchat
A2 - We've also been experimenting with incorporating our Learners' voices into #pd with "student takeovers" and students involved in feedback on #pbl design concepts and much more #pblchat - We should be engaging in this work in a participatory manner!!
A2 “Teachers’ initial exposure to a concept should not be passive, but rather should engage teachers through varied approaches so they can participate actively in making sense of a new practice.” from this post: https://t.co/TitmKHTu2X#pblchat
A2: I also appreciate when my perspective is challenged and a new understanding is developed through good, ole fashion dialogue with colleagues. #PBLChat
Here you go! https://t.co/h2bSwrxVRC
Super fun, it shows alignment to multiple grade levels / disciplines so that teachers all can connect to the relevancy of the context anchor :-) #pblchat
#PBLchat conferences have become the realm of the teacherpreneur - self-help for the educational crowd - it’s about selling books and increasing speaking engagements. #saskedchat

A3-collaborative learning spaces, reliable tech, time depends on purpose, most important is established norms & mindsets for the desire & attitude to learn something new #PBLchat
A3: “space”...for this “PD” all I need is the space of my recliner and the charger for my iPhone. Space is relative to what we are expected to accomplish. #PBLChat
Q3: NORMS are key & sticking 2 them. There is never enough time, so we need 2 have protocols & plans in place 2 make it meaningful & relevant. #PBLchat
A3: dedicated time for planning and collaboration, opportunities for teacher AND Ss voice to be in PD and talent plans for Ts - personalized for their strengths and opportunities to grow. #pblchat
A3 FEEDBACK structures for teachers and their learning matter. “Few other professionals are so isolated in their work, or get so little feedback, as Western teachers.” https://t.co/cWRCfxVrKU#PBLChat
A3 - I think you build with what you have, but tend towards depth over breadth. I really struggle with the short 1-2 hour sessions where rich/deep work gets started and then truncated. #pblchat
A3:
✅ Facilitator willing to ask adults to put away machines & focus on learning.
✅ An inquiry Q.
✅Clear objectives.
✅An explanation how it fits into purpose of learning org.
✅Experience and/or simulation.
✅Concrete next steps.
#pblchat
A3 every other week we have a grade-level collaboration day to work on/debrief projects, certain days we have receive personalized PD through @craftEDcm#PBLchat
A3 - Alberta Edu talked about 7 conditions for growth towards org-wide goal: shared vision, time, PD, leadership, resources, research/evidence and community involvement/support..if the #pd could incorporate much of those instead of them being silo-ed, that would be cool! #pblchat
Q3: What I find interesting is the great lengths we go to as Ts to create collaborative environments for our Ss, but our PD usually takes place in settings that do not lend themselves to collaborative conversations. #PBLchat
The first two years we opened we had close to 80 1/2 PD days called CPL - collaborative professional learning. We also use the FIT system to provide feedback. #pblchat
A3 While more time and space is always nice, meaningful learning is less about form and more about function. What are teachers doing? Practicing a skill? Creating something they’ll actually use? Asking questions? Connecting with colleagues? #pblchat
A3: There should be ample amount of time dedicated to PD, various forms of technology and strategies, space such as collaborative learning spaces and engaging activities and facilitator. #PBLChat
A3: Structures don’t mean PD looks the same for everyone. Assets Inventories are paramount with @Proj_ARC to determine what needs exist and supports are already in place #PBLChat@Kubikhan@IBPBLJill
Seating that is flexible based on the purpose, functioning technology, a place that allows for all to feel comfortable, access to the content in multiple ways, the environment allowing for differentiation and risk-taking! I would want it to look more like my classroom #pblchat
A3: making sure each PD builds on one another and are all assuming towards the same end goal/vision rather than each PD having a different focus that feels like multiple initiatives running parallel. #PBLChat
A3: “time”...interestingly enough, if it’s a PD I enjoy, it could never be long enough to satiate my passion and curiosity and desire to learn, but if it doesn’t reach me, it could not end soon enough! #PBLChat
Late to the #PBLchat, but so many great ideas + questions, I have to jump in. I work w/Ts to teach entrepreneurship + coding to students. See bio for details.
#pblchat need to reimagine schools, reimagine teaching and reimagine Learning. It’s about creating an ecosystem of learning not a factory- for all involved.
So true, sometimes less is more. Many of the #edleaders we've been working with have fundamentally reduced the number of goals in their organizations. Quality with less instead of everyone drowning with too much on their plates #pblchat
A3 “... if the training merely described a skill to teachers, as traditional workshops do, only 10 percent of teachers could transfer the skill to practice.” https://t.co/TitmKHTu2X#pblchat
@CCNTH has developed a staff project that addresses this :) We call it Showing Up! You can purchase a copy here ~ $ just to pay for the site to be up :) #pblchathttps://t.co/RcuaZDBeEG
Interesting literature out there. Dissertation by a freind @mqroth explored connection to learning and Twitter. Def encourage checking it out. #PBLchat

A2 Coaching others (in formal, informal, and peer formats) makes me a better teacher and leader. Accountability + collaboration push my practice. #alwayslearning#pblchat
A5: I seek out twitter chats, webinars, District PDs, & when I can’t find what I need, I start asking around! Someone is bound to know where I can get help! And that someone sounds like @funkdaddytweet! 😂 #PBLChat
A4: Participating in #pblchat, signing up for NTN virtual workshops, spending time looking through other's Twitter feeds and researching, serving on our Building Leadership Team, self-guided exploration of topics, attending NTAC! #PBLchat
A4: we need to realize that a one size fits all approach doesn’t work in the classroom and doesn’t work in PD. Teachers are also learners. We must model in our PD what we expect in our classrooms. Teachers must call out PD orgs that don’t differentiate. #pblchat
A3: Can we differentiate and individualize so that we get most of the learning on our our timel and terms, and the 30 minutes is used for sharing and showing? #pblchat#edchat#pd
A4: I curate my own learning through social media, push to attend opportunities, share my learning with others, and present to staff and faculty... #pblchat

A4: We can influence PD by constantly posing I Wonders & Next Steps. As Ts we can use Critical Friends when designing PD. We can also ask ourselves, "Is this something I would want to attend on a Friday afternoon?" :) #pblchat
Purchase ($ to keep the site up) & make a copy of @CCNTH Showing Up: Personalized PD Project & give it to your leadership team! #pblchathttps://t.co/RcuaZDBeEG
A4) Also...finding opportunities to develop oneself along the SWLOs we champion for our students as an educational professional would be quite the adventure... #PBLChat
Purchase ($ to keep the site up) & make a copy of @CCNTH Showing Up: Personalized PD Project & give it to your leadership team! #pblchathttps://t.co/RcuaZDBeEG
A4: I advocate for my own learning by sharing what I learn and create because of it. Sharing the results leads to interest in "how you did it" grow your #PLN and level of influence #PBLchat
This can be tricky, especially being in our third year.I would say it is our biggest goal area. We share our learning and start small. With small groups, they become larger and in hope will eventually spread to the entire school. Agency is key..practice what you preach! #pblchat
A4: I don't wait for learning opportunities to present themselves, I seek them. I also let others know what I need from them for my own learning and ask what they need from me to support their learning. Can influence by always bringing the focus back to whats best 4 sts #PBLChat
Good question Mike. How to get this as part of the learning culture for all staff? Ryan - do you have space to share what you find in those other opportunities? #PBLChat
A4 Teachers can advocate for better PD by creating it ourselves: starting or joining PLCs, growing PLNs, making #Observeme signs or a #pineapplechart, writing about our practice, or presenting at conferences. #pblchat
A3: Best PD is ongoing and immersive in practice. Punctuate it with deep experiences where Ts dig into new strategies + content. Just read this gem of an overview today! #pblchathttps://t.co/hCQBVfVbSk
In recent travels to Hong Kong, we learned about some REALLY cool learning experiences to immerse Ts, Ss (and parents/community) about new future trends with #blockchain, #AI#IoT and much more. If we better understand the future, we build greater shared "why" for #pbl#pblchat
Facilitated. Possibly in a professional company of site to bring in an authentic #why to focus on modern collaboration and agency in the workforce #Pblchat#edchat#pd
I start by doing it myself. I show others I’m trustworthy by opening myself up. People follow when they know they won’t be standing there alone. #PBLchat
Facilitated. Possibly in a professional company off site to bring in an authentic #why to focus on modern collaboration and agency in the workforce #Pblchat#edchat#pd
A4: Agree w/many that PLN through tech is easy way to stay engaged. I have to advocate for self, make time + set goals to learn/participate in conferences as learner/leader; say yes when offered. Told friend yesterday: confusion = fun for me. #expertlearner#pblchat
A5:
Can we please start getting credit for twitter chats?
Can we please get some info on upcoming PDs happening outside our school mandated ones?
Can I try leading one?
#PBLchat
After this #PBLchat I really want a PD that includes student voice and offers collaboration between students and teachers. I also want more small group personalized PD specific to our school’s needs. @SaldanaMissy@lcorral07
Folks have to see that there is value is searching out their own PD. They also have to be passionate about it and engaged for their own intrinsic reasons. #pblchat

Q2: All the feels... seeing student learning come to life. Seeing investment, pride, critical thinking and all real aspects of learning is my favorite part! #pblchat#pbl#CCBOEInTech
A5: Is it authentic, relevant, meaningful, empowering, goal-oriented, outcomes driven, an opportunity for deeper thinking/collaboration, and differentiated for those in attendance? #pblchat
A4: in a recent trip to partner with teachers in Saudi Arabia, we incorporated culturally relevant PD. We must advocate for this for our teachers to transfer it to our students. #pblchat
Big #pblchat takeaway tonight was about adult agency-educators must demand to be engaged! Spark the #pdrevolution today, comrades. Thx @newtechnetwork for leading a great convo!
