#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Welcome to #k12artchat My name is Jason & I teach elementary art in Dublin, Ohio. I’m a happy to mod tonight’s chat.
Who are you, where are you, how are you?
Do we encourage creativity only when it’s convenient for us as adults/teachers? A child’s creative mind is on 24/7/365. What about the time outside of traditional creative acts? #k12artchat
I'm Beth from IA- currently working on student teaching during my third year of college. I'm a fairly good artist, and people always tell me I should be an art teacher (I'm getting an el-ed major). What's it like to be an elementary art teacher? #k12artchat
A1: One way is by trying to let my ss take ownership over our classroom and school. I try to act on their ideas and passions while sparking curiosity and challenging them as change agents in our culture. #K12ArtChat
A1: in my classroom, I try to allow my students to express their interests through the projects we do. I may provide guidelines, but they come up with the content and style. #K12ArtChat
A1 listen more. Talk less. Create a space where ss need to articulate the “why” behind their learning and making. Invite challenges that are supported by passion & purpose. #k12artchat
A1b: I'm gearing up here to once again do a school impact project with my 5th graders. This was the result last time! https://t.co/qv4gne8y2P#k12artchat
A1: students have more freedoms to explore, discus, and learn in art class. I don’t stump their conversations- I enhance them by allowing them to make choices, have space in the room, and foster an environment where their opinions matter #k12ArtChat
A1 #k12artchat I try to design lessons that require thought from my students - to use knowledge in a different way. We did a lesson about the power of words this year that really spoke to this.
#k12ArtChat Linda from WI, K to 6,
Excited 5th grade could do this in one class period for Read Across America
They went BIG 23x30 in
Happy to be here tonight
A1: just finished Night in the Arts at school. Art show and 3 concerts to celebrate the full arts connection! Ss created art to use as their voice on a variety of topics important to them #k12artchat
A1: I'm open to their suggestions for projects and as to how they want to modify an assignment. I also give them lots of choices in sketch assignments or to design their own.
Guess what today is!?!? MARCH 🎨🍀💫 YOUTH ART MONTH!!! I will be hosting and participating in #31DaysofYAM on behalf of @ArtEducatorsNJ 💥 Daily Posts to come! ✨ Join in the art challenge! We are all still learning, after all...🙋🏻♀️ (reposted with corrected handles)
We are glad you are here tonight! It is an amazing place to be, when you see a Ss process through a struggle & have the look of enlightenment on their face when it works! #K12ArtChat
A1- I allow 'open seating' in my Art classes; students sit wherever they feel more comfortable to create, in either the classroom or the Fine Arts Hallway. Less stress to create #K12ArtChat
A2: My students keep a Visual-Verbal Journal and I try to give them time to draw/write freely in their journal about events that occurred throughout their day and their feelings. They respond well and love doing it #K12ArtChat
I do the hallway, too. Some of them use the quieter space to "think" or just get a break from their peers. (The problem is when there are more kids in the hall than the class...) #k12artchat
A2 #k12artchat it’s hard to not be vulnerable / real when I’m around art! My students may think I’m crazy sometimes but I express my joy and sadness for our content every day. I think my behavior models to them that my class is a place to be real.
A1 I invited students to collaborate with me to redesign our classroom to suit creative learning- we painted colorful murals, changed the seating & then began to rethink the structure of the class itself! #k12artchat
A2: right now I am loving @Flipgrid for my students to reflect on their work. They are so open and honest with themselves and about their creativite experience! Documenting & celebrating the productive struggle❤️ #k12artchat
A2: I share my vulnerabilities and journies that are appropriate for middle school so that Ss understand that it is part of the creative process so they will embrace it when they experience it. #k12artchat
#k12artchat We are taking our class on the road next week. Student panel will be giving a workshop to a Middle School. So excited to see how this goes.
A2: be willing to share the great & the tough. I would always tell students when I’d enter a show & then if accepted or not. Win some, lose some & that’s ok! #K12ArtChat
A2 with my most vulnerable Ss giving them positive praise or a hug can make their week. Sometimes it's the smallest gesture that means the most. Those Ss with well developed skills love an extra challenge & responsibility. They embrace it and feel empowered. #K12ArtChat
A2: I always try to celebrate mistakes and encourage them to turn them into creative changes. Spilled ink gets sopped up with paper and drawn back into! I also am very encouraging no matter what ability #k12artchat
I’m trying to create a space for the introverted learners. Collaboration is great, but reflective isolation plays a powerful role in learning as well. @livequiet#K12ArtChat
I do the hallway, too. Some of them use the quieter space to "think" or just get a break from their peers. (The problem is when there are more kids in the hall than the class...) #k12artchat
A2: I also encourage Ss to travel to new places. Too many don’t leave the area and believe the entire world is exactly like their hometown. New experiences lead to new ideas and direction #k12artchat
A2: I want to tell my future students that being vulnerable is one of the hardest things in the world, and showing vulnerability makes you stronger, not weaker #k12artchat
A2 I try to encourage risk, vulnerability & authenticity in my classes by creating a respectful, supportive environment & by modeling it- sharing & listening to students is just as important as teaching #K12ArtChat
While @SirKenRobinson is having a profound effect on creativity & education, I feel @BreneBrown will have an equally impressive impact with regards to social/emotional learning & ed. I would love to hear a conversation between them. I’d gladly volunteer to moderate:) #K12ArtChat
A3: at the end of every project, my ss do a self and peer reflection where they identify glows and grows for themselves and their peers. It really helps them define quality work and helps them develop skills #K12ArtChat
A3 #K12ArtChat middle school can be super tricky with this. I try to put artwork of talented Ss who don’t have a ton of confidence out (but not on display) in the room. Classmates see the work and comment without realizing they’ve been set up to praise a quiet peer.
A3 I am trying to get older ss to focus more on talking to each other, more than talking directly to me. Doing more kindness challenges, having ss create for each other more. Using more Human Centered Design Process @IDEOU to build creative confidence & empathy. #k12artchat
Sometimes just noticing their taking risks is the most important. I try to call them on it when I see it, just to let them know that I understand how they've challenged themselves. (And vice versa: calling them out when you see they're getting complacent)
A3 I encourage the "ask 3 before me" for everything including, am I done, what else should I add, observe your neighbors because we can learn from each other, I don't want them just relying on me because it is their artwork #K12ArtChat
A3: I give a lot of challenge days, between projects, so that ss are creating with unconventional materials. The goal is NOT a finished work, but just to see what the materials will do. #k12artchat
A3: I encourageSs to group brainstorm and assist each other in their creative process. Sharing ideas and allowing peers to offer creative suggestions to other Ss projects during the production #k12artchat
A2- I model moments of vulnerability by working on projects with my students. When my students see Me in the same struggle as them, & students see Me trying to work thru those same problems as them, students learn so much more; 2 pics of my work, made with students #k12artchat
A3: through the idea of mid process gallery walks & talking to 2-3 other Ss for feedback. We talk abt how to ask the question. (Not "Is it good?”, but “What can I change or add?”) #K12ArtChat
A3: I think student grouping as well as fostering a safe environment naturally leads to conversations based around creativity in the art room. It allows for constructive criticism and growth when students feel safe.#K12ArtChat#K12ArtChat
A3 Trust needs to be the core ingredient in class for students to feel comfortable taking risks-students in AP art collaborate & work with partners for feedback, advice & encouragement as they follow their creative paths #K12ArtChat
A3- From time to time, within the workings of our projects, I have All Students STOP, Stand Up behind their chair, and circulate around the room for 5 minutes, viewing other S's artwork. Must do's: be honest, be talkative & talk about How others can improve their art #k12artchat
So yea... maybe not followed by everyone on instagram, but here’s a self addition to the #lariosarthunt that I posted over there! #k12artchat#copicmarkers
A4 create boredom challenges. Think of the most boring tools, tasks, etc. and see where it takes you. Creativity begins where boredom ends. I had ss watch paint dry on @YouTube to begin a lesson on boredom. Boredom usually brings out the playful side in us all. #k12artchat
A4 Bring in the “toys” & try them out together! Go outside! Use random materials! Give time to play and experiment before committing to your final work. #k12artchat
"Play" gets such a bad rap. I'm sure someone's done their dissertation on the history of that word and how it's become a 4-letter word for education (and how it's making a comeback) #k12artchat
A3: I have discussions in which they write post it notes of support for each other's work or each make a positive comment during looking sessions and I encourage them to learn from each other as much as they can #k12artchat
Q4: I “play” with other teachers allowing Ss to witness and join in. Ss become more relaxed and willing to take risks and go outside the box due to the playful atmosphere and a more relaxed comfort level. #k12artchat
A4 Make time for fun, make time for play, make time for expression & make time for experimentation- they form the gateway to true #creativity & innovation. It's essential for students & teachers alike! #k12artchat
A4: In my internship for my principals cert I’ve been helping to implement a lot of PD. I’m all about learning by doing! Instead of talking about collaboration we played a @breakoutEDU & then our ts went and tried it with their ss. Play inspires! #K12ArtChat
A5 I have used @GlimmerGuy provocative prompts to get ss creating from a place of curiosity/passion, not compliance/conformity. “5th grade ss have nothing important to say about their world.” Have ss generate only q’s to this statment & see where it takes you. #k12artchat
A4- I make my classroom very welcoming & inviting by simply playing music All The Time while we work on projects. I have s different playlist for each class, based on personalities #k12artchat
A5 #k12artchat I like to spend time with museum educators and learn from the way they lead inquiry with artwork. Thinking about how a viewer might interact with an image or object is a helpful starting point for me.
A5: I use Artful Thinking to sometimes start lessons/ or Design Thinking! Gets their brains going in all diff directions! #K12ArtChat Starting my 3rd grs See/Think/Wonder w/ Van Gogh - “Irises"
A4: play is worked into most lessons with chances to experiment with materials and ideas before starting projects. I also show lots of videos about artists who are playful and experimental. #k12artchat
#K12ArtChat A6 I've let go a lot more...I try to find a way to say YES more....but I do ask WHY? Every student in my class can advocate for their own learning but workshops are great mixed in with mentors.
A6 sharing projects only within the class or grade. I want to share across grade levels. I want to try & create an opp. for older kids to share w/younger ones and teach younger ones. It’s a schedule rule I am going to try and break. Creativity thrives on constraints #k12artchat
