Heeeeey, #ditchbook! Evan Mosier, Tech Integrationist and 6th grade Language Arts - Davenport, IA. Excited about this evening's chat! Thanks @herrplatt for moderating!
Jumping into the new year with the #ditchbook chat! Elizabeth McCartney, 2nd grade & tech model teacher from Davenport, IA! I love the feeling of having a good fresh start! Always a great time to reflect on the year and what to improve!
Lance, K-4 principal in MO. I enjoy the fact that educators have two huge opportunities to rejuvenate, reflect, and come back strong #StartofSchool#NewYear#ditchbook

Q1: Whether for professional or personal life many resolutions can seem cookie cutter and boring. How can you make one that is both Different and Innovative? #Ditchbook
Hey #DitchBook! Matt here, author/blogger/speaker, 10+yr HS Spanish teacher from Indiana.
HUGE fan of #DitchBook (I made it) and my fellow ditchers!
New year = new start.
Hi, I'm Jessica. I'm a college student in Southern California studying to become an elementary school teacher and looking forward to learning from you all and contribute what I can #ditchbook
#DitchBook A1 I'm not a fan of resolutions, because if it's worth doing and important enough to do, then I shouldn't need to wait for January 1st to start. My different and innovative "resolution" for the time being is to continuously explore the "adjacent possible"...
Meg Barker, grade 3-5 librarian in Maine and so far in the new year I am enjoying the lingering later sunset on the Kennebec River! and seeing the s's come back from break looking MUCH older than the mere 10 days it's been since I have seen them. #ditchbook
Kim Wienholt aka olddognewtricks /Spanish grades 8-12/ditching sleep/best part- seeing look on ss faces when I dropped new tools on them today! #DitchBook
#ditchbook I donāt need my resolution to be innovative I need it to be personal. My resolution this year & towards the end of 2018 was āprogress, not perfectionā. I need to understand that I am not perfect and perfection is not attainable on this earth of ours. Itās the journey.
Q1: Whether for professional or personal life many resolutions can seem cookie cutter and boring. How can you make one that is both Different and Innovative? #Ditchbook
I am not really a fan of resolutions either. I am a go-getter. If I want something, I will work towards it. I don't need the new year to motivate me. #ditchbook
A1: I think if it is one that challenges you personally or professionally is the best choice. I usually struggle mightily to stick to one resolution, as I find myself constantly changing my goals. #ditchbook
A1. Try 2 do something new each year both professional & personally. I figured out how to use Adobe Spark to create week in reviews for Ps over vacation and personally I am crossing things off my bucket list. Harry Potter World, #FETC, and @NFL Pro Bowl all in one week #DitchBook
Q1: Whether for professional or personal life many resolutions can seem cookie cutter and boring. How can you make one that is both Different and Innovative? #Ditchbook
A1: This year, I wrote out a timeline and steps of what Iām going to accomplish this year! Usually, I write them down and never look at it again. Iām going to journal and sketchnote my way through the year! Iām even having my students for it too! #ditchbook
Q1: Whether for professional or personal life many resolutions can seem cookie cutter and boring. How can you make one that is both Different and Innovative? #Ditchbook
Here's Q1 again: Whether for professional or personal life many resolutions can seem cookie cutter and boring. How can you make one that is both Different and Innovative? #Ditchbook
Q1 - my friends and I did a pretty effective exercise on NYE - we came up with resolutions by discrete category - eg instead of "being healthy" we came up w a resolution specifically about fruits or vegetables. Forced you to focus=interesting and doable. #ditchbook
A1: I'm looking for purpose in personal challenges. How can I use situations and circumstances to help others or build community through the challenges. Still thinking... #ditchbook
I just read about it recently, after taking note of it in a quote in @gcouros' #InnovatorsMindset. I am amazed, by the way that every time you try an "adjacent possible" thing, new possibilities appear that were not there before. #DitchBook
A1 - Iām reflecting on: what goal/dream has been consistently on my mind/heart? If we make goals around something we feel called to pursue, theyāll inherently be different/innovative & will be something we're motivated to go after both personally & in the classroom. #ditchbook
Q1: Ask the students to create one for you. They have such great insight. For me that would make it more meaningful and Iād be more likely to keep it. #Ditchbook
A1: I am me and no one else is like me. I take that as a gift and make things my own. So to be different and innovative my resolutions are small and simple- so I can attain and maintain them! #DitchBook
Q1: Whether for professional or personal life many resolutions can seem cookie cutter and boring. How can you make one that is both Different and Innovative? #Ditchbook
Hi my name is Kyra! I'm in a masters program at Chapman University with the hopes of becoming a High school English teacher! Really interested in innovative teaching methods, any advice would be appreciated. #ditchbook
A1: By making a resolution that isnāt totally out of nowhere. We canāt be unrealistic that weāre going to change our lives completely in a day. Make action steps to a better life than a wild resolution! #ditchbook
#DitchBook A2. A "Tech-Laden Classroom Resolution" is to consider, with every lesson or activity, where tech can enhance the students' learning experience, especially by involving the student in creation.
Oh yes but I crossed meeting you off my bucket list @masscue But ALWAYS love to see you in person. Means the world to me we started as connected educators and now are friends! #DitchBook
Search for, #DitchBook, make sure it's sorted to show the newest at the top. Keep your eye out for the questions (Q1, Q2...) and you reply with (A1, A2, etc.). I'm going to share a tweet with you to help you out...
To help with setting new habits in a new year, I love the habit stacking idea from @JamesClear's Atomic Habits.
Find an existing habit/recurring event. Add a new habit to it so the new habit will have a trigger.
#DitchBook
a1 my resolution is literally to try something new - so maybe thatās innovative?? lol #Ditchbook I look to my own children when I need to break the mold
A2. We are using My Maps or Tour Builder to go on a Colonial Adventure of a life time. And yesterday a Ss was drawing his composter in Google Draw and said "I have never used this before. I have no idea what I am doing. But Look! It is pretty good!" #DitchBook
A2: I'm going to say that it's having a heart to be open to new things and be willing to explore new tools, tools you haven't tried yet, or reworking old news into new ways. #DitchBook
OMG Yes and next year I am managing my time better because I will not be doing ten roles. So we can spend more than 30 sec together if that is ok with you! #DitchBook

@herrplatt, @jmattmiller, @NFL, @masscue
A2: Making a resolution to find a new way to integrate tech into a different subject area. Or maybe a resolution to encourage another teacher to join the tech party. #ditchbook
A2: a tech laden classroom involves using technology to accelerate student learning. What lessons do I have where tech can allow and enhance the 4 Cās? š¤#ditchbook
A2: iāve seen several educators on Twitter use @Flipgrid with great success. I am going to try it out this semester. That is a goal of mine this year. I think part of growing as an educator is always willing to try new things and push yourself. #Ditchbook
Hi! Amber Harper from Fort Wayne, IN. šš» R1. Set 1 big goal at a time and list the tasks that need to be done to complete that goal. Think Understanding by Design. Plan backwards. Some goals have more small tasks and will take longer. #ditchbook
A1: Did a book study on business book the 4 Disciplines of Execution last year. I try to come up with personal/professional goals that have 2 parts: Lag Measure (what will happen) and Lead Measure (what will I change to make it happen). #ditchbook
A1 a resolution I want to stick to this year is to make life simpler with the use of technology. Whether that be for myself, in the classroom, or for my students. This is a way to not be "cookie cutter" that makes me want to learn something everyday to make life easier #ditchbook
A2: MIT Scratch 3.0 w/Makey Makey board & a contact switch on classroom door. When opened animation will sing hello. Ss will go to laptop & leave a Flipgrid resonse about how the greeting made them feel & make a text connection if possible. Then ck in on Google Form #ditchbook
A1 I gotta confess that I am pretty anti-resolution. I liked thinking about intentions rather than resolutions, but as a TOSA by the time students get to me - they usually written out resolutions in at least 2 of their classes and they are kind of over it. #ditchbook
A2- I loved what @JakeMillerTech said in his recent #eduducttape podcast we need to gather our materials into our tech tool box then when the right lesson comes along we can get it out of our tool box!
#ditchbook
A2: I try to limit myself to 1-2 new tech tools each year. Any more than that and I don't develop any depth in the tool. This year my focus is on Digital Portfolios and @Flipgrid. #ditchbook
A2 tech with purpose, not just the purpose of tech. Right now, heavily into using tech to provide choice. Choice in engagent and expression. Using different tech tools to create products that show knowledge. #Ditchbook
A2: Using Adobe Spark to help students make their thinking visible and demo their understanding.
Use Post to create images, Pages for simple webpages and Video for easy videos!
https://t.co/D6dZp3LWcI#DitchBook
A2: Thisnis easier for me since I am in a 1:1 classroom. However, my challenge comes in to make sure I change it up! This year, I am working w/ other Ts to bring tech into their classroom. I start with simple@things like Google Docs and @padlet and @Flipgrid ! #DitchBook
A2: I know it's already been said, but I am totally digging in to @wakelet these first few days of 2019. So many different uses and capabilities for the classroom! #ditchbook
A2 using tech to enhance/build on practices. I was just looking at online quizzes and using them differently such as Blind Kahoot, Fast and Curious, and even Connected Kahoot!ing. #ditchbookhttps://t.co/tXXgNrcXN4
A2: Letting students run with projects that interest them as opposed to sticking to my scope and sequence AND creating some kind of showcase that allows their homeroom teachers to see what they can do with tech and together brainstorm ways to make it cross curricular. #ditchbook
A1 HOWEVER, I do something called the CREED project with my students which asks them to dive deep into the things that matter most to them - character traits, people, etc and determine a personal creed for themselves. It's really powerful #ditchbook
A2: Definitely being willing to take a lesson or unit and finding some way to incorporate some sort of tech tool! When Ss know that you want to take their learning to the next step, & will learn with them, it is very powerful! #ditchbook
A new year's resolution that deals with #EdTech
Finding more ways to use FEWER tools rather than trying ALL of the new, flashy tools.
Eliminate overwhelm for you AND your students. #DitchBook
A2: I need to explore what is out there so that I can incorporate it into the classroom. Haven't done much research on useful tech tools and programs yet #ditchbook
Q3: Resolutions that are Creative and Hands-on can make for a long lasting impact. How will your 2019 classroom resolutions embody these attributes? #Ditchbook
A1 I donāt like the word resolution, I prefer making an intention and it should be something realistic and obtainableābut involve a habit change. Intention allows you to revisit it if you wander a bit. Mine is to blog once a week. #Ditchbook
Q1: Whether for professional or personal life many resolutions can seem cookie cutter and boring. How can you make one that is both Different and Innovative? #Ditchbook
A2 I really like looking through @cultofpedagogyās Teacherās Guide to Tech. It gives an overview of each tool as well as reasons for using it and much more. Iāve learned about so much great technology that students can use in it. #Ditchbook
A2: My students use a googlesite they've created as their Learning Hub -- they share all the things they are learning - including their passion projects and their work on their creed. #ditchbook
Think Padlet or Todays Meet, but free, extremely user-friendly, and great for the classroom. Hat tip to @SEANJFAHEY for steering me towards it! #ditchbook
In reply to
@mccartney2grade, @wakelet, @SEANJFAHEY
A2 I was discussing with a teacher at our school today about how we can expand the 3D printing club to work on soft skills such as design thinking, presentation skills, entrepreneurship, and so much more! #ditchbook
She does such a great job curating that list each year! It's not an "everything" list, it's a list of recommendation with sound pedagogy-based rationale for each! #DitchBook
#DitchBook a3: I'm going to try to give students a chance to teach others something creative. Otherwise, I'm not sure. So much to do. Maybe skits of romeo and juliet... modernized
A3. I am going to be selfish for a moment and say I am going to look for creative ways for me to learn that are hands on so I can bring back exciting experiences for Ss. #DitchBook
Q3: Resolutions that are Creative and Hands-on can make for a long lasting impact. How will your 2019 classroom resolutions embody these attributes? #Ditchbook
A3 - as an educator I'm really focusing back in on CLARITY - trying to always focus in on WHY we are doing something. I don't want to just teach random tech skils, but rather have students use their tech skills to create, express and design. #notconsumers#ditchbook
A3: I have decided that Iām going to plaster my word, progress, all over my room. Iām going to try to incorporate it into all of my essential questions as well. Students need to understand that it is the process that makes education worthwhile. #ditchbook
A3- I would like to see students creating more! Rather than students consuming information have them take their knowledge and going deeper with by creating a podcast, infographic, video, ect
#ditchbook
Here's Q3 again: Resolutions that are Creative and Hands-on can make for a long lasting impact. How will your 2019 classroom resolutions embody these attributes? #Ditchbook
A3: I used to be 100% in the Google Slides camp, but after watching @tonyvincent in the #ditchsummit, I am leaning back into Google Drawings. So much potential for creation in each of them, but I like the open space "border" that Drawings provides. #ditchbook
Agree! But the bigger problem is the equity issue that exists now between what Ts are doing with Ss and what others are not. The digital divide has shifted is more about exposure than machines #DitchBook
This really resonated with me when you shared it in #DitchSummit. It's good to hear someone who's respected and trusted by educators encouraging them to not try to do it all - just do some and do it well! #DitchBook
A3: Trying to work more science into hands-on tech without just being a substitution or video. I canāt bring the solar system into the classroom or acids for chemical reactions, but I can have them experiment with websites that allow for trial and error. #DitchBook
Q3: Resolutions that are Creative and Hands-on can make for a long lasting impact. How will your 2019 classroom resolutions embody these attributes? #Ditchbook
A3 I really want to run with student choice this year and harness a few new tools (like @wakelet) to keep the train moving. #Ditchbook curating a few key āwakesā for both ts and sās that give options and depth with resources
A3: I started the yr intending on integrating 2 big ideas: aquarium & cooking. School set up a PBL workshop this month led by a special educator. So I think my 'resolve' is to dive deep into things and integrate. #ditchbook
A3: Iām hoping to learn more new tech tools with my Ss right alongside me. I think this hands-on learning experience will be so beneficial for all of us. #ditchbook
A3 Writing a clear learning intention on the board or in my google classroom for every assignment would push me to make sure that I have clarity when assigning work #ditchbook
Thanks. Too many teachers feel bad for not doing it all. The only thing that they should feel bad about is if they're not trying to add ANYthing. #DitchBook
#DitchBook A4 Success in the goals that I have for the educators and learners in my school is growth, but not a growth that's easily measured. The best way to see it is to watch for the ripples... Are they spreading?
A4 Set clear goals with action steps and deadlines. Tell others to help hold myself accountable and revisit progress. Biggest struggle is straying from it to pursue something else that excites me! #ditchbook
I keep joking to my kids (who I don't let play fortnite, because of their age) that one day we're going to play forKnite. Everything we eat, must be consumed with a fork. Soup? fork. cereal? fork. pudding? fork. #DitchBook
A4: I want to dive into these with the end in mind. Set some milestones along the way and gauge the success by student engagement and "buy-in." Then I will know what to tweak for the future. #ditchbook
A4: for me, itās about whether or not the students truly learned and understand the material. Going for SBG here and the goal of true understanding! #DitchBook
A4: I use a bullet journal to track my habits (especially new ones I'm trying to add) - thank you @JamesClear but I would imagine talking to other educators to help keep me accoutable would be a great way to ensure I maintain clarity #ditchbook
A4: Maintaining accountability doesn't have to be anything flashy.
A calendar.
Checkboxes on an index card.
If you find the right app, it provides GREAT data. I love my Google Fit app.
#DitchBook
A4 - I measure success day by day, tās stop me in the hall and pull me in to show me something theyāre trying - to me thatās success. Theyāre excited, kids are excited and the train keeps moving. I love when the buzz gets louder! When everyone is engaged, scores go up #Ditchbook
A3 to make a lasting impact it has to be the Ss choice. Giving a variety of tools and letting Ss choose how to share their learning is the best way for them to show creativity and be hands-on. #DitchBook
Here's Q3 again: Resolutions that are Creative and Hands-on can make for a long lasting impact. How will your 2019 classroom resolutions embody these attributes? #Ditchbook
A4: I think Ss engagement and knowledge of new tech tools will be a good measure. Also hoping to have some teammates/coworkers (@mccartney2grade) help to keep me accountablešš #ditchbook
Hi I'm Priscilla from NJ jumping in late! I teach grades 1-4, technology, STEM, & Gifted Ed. I like having a time to reflect & then set new goals. #Ditchbook
A4:as a new teacher mentor, my Ts have goals, we will revisit & possibly adjust in Janā maybe a #oneword2019 or phrasešas a mentor team we will look at our #gratitudejars monthly & reflect individually & as a group #ditchbook
This one of my favorite things to do. Ss are truly doing that this year in math. Only thing I changed about math this year is to give them (and me) more time. #ditchbook
A4: I want my word progress to be so embedded in everything they do that they begin to use the word consistently in the learning process! I want to see it ripple out. #DitchBook
A3: I want to help the students become content creators in my class. I'm still trying to figure out a way to hand over the reigns of the class Instagram and Twitter accounts to my students (while still maintaining a small dose of control for safety). #ditchbook
A4: Taking time to reflect and look back at my resolutions! I think the big part is making mini goals and creating the steps that need to make it happen! Knowing itās not all going to happen over night, but will take time for everyone! #ditchbook
