Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
I am Brittany Sunderlin and I currently have a license for Early Childhood Education. I am going for my Master's in Special Education Mild/Moderate. So excited to participate tonight. #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A1: I think that our roles as educators vary. We are educators, nurturers, and many other things throughout the day. #21stedchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
A1: Our largest role as educators is to inspire students to want to learn. Our number one priority is to prepare our students to be successful and productive citizens in the world. #21stedchat
A1 It was ok for classrooms to have a T at the front of the room, who was the only knowledge resource, as the internet didn't exist. Desks could be in rows bc it replicated the workforce. But times have changed; we must prepare today’s Ss for a different world #21stedchat
A1: The role of an educator is to prepare students for the next level. We need to develop a learning space that supports student understanding & allows students to build on prior understanding. #21stedchat
A1 Our roles as educators and parents are the same:
We must honor and attend to the core needs of the #WholeChild— socially, emotionally, soulfully, and intellectually. #21stedchat
@Edu_Thompson a1: our role is SO much! Role model, teacher, social emotional facilitator, connector btwn interests & learning, surrogate parents, counselor, I could go on. #21stedchat
A1: This is the biggest problem with education in America. No one can agree on an answer! Until then, teachers, politicians, parents, Admin are arguing about symptoms! #21stedchat
A2. When I started, 40 years ago, I knew exactly what my role was. Now I am not so sure. In an at-risk school, in an urban setting, the roles are so blurry - teams of educators try their VERY best to meet the needs of students. #21stedchat
A2: No, it is not possible for school reform to be possible if the role of Ts do not change. If the role of the T does not shift from what it was when we grew up, there is no way that we will be able to prepare our Ss for the world they will soon be entering. #21stedchat
Sorry I'm joining late...I'm a Carolina fan;-( I am new to Twitter chats but have really enjoyed reading the 21sted posts from this past week. Think I'll learn a lot! #21stedchat
Wow, thanks! Parents you most admire *on Twitter.* The kids are in the other room on their own devices. The jury on my actual parenthood is still out. ;) #21stedchat
A2: the teacher must understand the role--not as a fountain of knowledge that must douse the students, but rather a mentor who helps lead students to the rivers of knowledge that we all have access to in the 21st Century #21stedchat
A2 School reform needs all stakeholders to change from the traditional roles. Education has changed so much, which means we all need to be adaptable to the ever changing needs of our ss. #21stedchat
I feel that we need to redefine the roles of teachers with regards to our changing world, changing students... Learners should be at the center. #21stedchat
A2 teachers have to be models and leaders. Plus change needs examples for others to see. Plus everyone needs to share what they are doing and be proud of it #21stedchat
A2: Teachers need to be adaptable in order to continue meeting the needs of students. I also agree with @dprindle on the need to self-advocate as educators, so we can in turn advocate for our students #21stedchat
A2. I found this headline fitting "Redefining the Role of the Teacher: It's a Multifaceted Profession" by @edutopia
and it was written in 1997! Just shows how the role is always changing https://t.co/kU10Anw5AT#21stedchat
A2: School Reform is a Constant, not a Variable.
In Today’s Schools, We Are Seeing Constant Change, Experimentation, New Approaches, & Strategies. Reaching All Students Is Different From Sorting & Selecting. The Goal Has Changed. #21stedchat
As an art teacher I work to help my students develop creativity, curiosity, and confidence as the learn project management skills and increase their eye-hand coordination and ability to really see the world. I work to create a safe space for them to learn and grow. #21stedchat
A1: Our role is (1) to equip our student with a skill set they will be able to utilize after they leave us... And (2) to inspire and empower them to do something awesome as they move on. #21stedchat
A2: School Reform is a Constant, not a Variable.
In Today’s Schools, We Are Seeing Constant Change, Experimentation, New Approaches, & Strategies. Reaching All Students Is Different From Sorting & Selecting. The Goal Has Changed. #21stedchat
Didn't reform begin in the early 1800s? I am not sure it ended yet. Teachers have less to say in the reform than they did during the time of Horace Mann. #21stedchat
A2. Doesn't the word reform, in its essence, imply change? Cannot have reform without at least a little give from all stakeholders. The onus is shifting, but the Ts role is still KEY in the changes happening. #21stedchat
A1: Our role as educators is to prepare students to become citizens and to teach them the skills that they need to be successful #21stedchat (This is my first chat- sorry for the delayed response)
A2: Schools and teachers should always be changing. Schools can’t be static organizations...ever. And teachers must change with their students every year #21stedchat
A2 I don’t think we need to reform education as much as we need to refocus on developing students’ self-control, self-confidence, self-expression, and self-efficacy. This balance is the most important aspect of nurturing and educating every child. #21stedchat
I was writing a blog post the other day about professional development books. I went to search out the name of a book on literacy I could have read when I graduated from college - there weren't ANY! NONE! Yes, times are changing quickly! #21stedchat
A2: Our role as teachers does not have to change for reform to occur, but we should always be making adjustments and change our methods to stay current and promote changes #21stedchat
As someone with zero experience in the art classroom, how has the art classroom changed from 20 years ago? In my own observation, it would appear that much appears to stay the same due to the skills being taught. Just curious. :) #21stedchat
A3: Technology is but a tool for teachers. Technology is a means for teachers to facilitate more and allow students to produce for a more authentic audience #21stedchat
A3: It helps streamline the compliance (attendance, evaluation) tasks and every other administrative mandate. But it adds synchronous communications with parents and students. #21stedchat
A2: There is no hope for improvement without changing how we operate on a day to day basis. If we don't change anything... nothing changes. #21stedchat
Also, my best teachers (in the 80's and 90's) lived up to the role I described to Q1 - to inspire a love of learning. In that sense, the role hasn't changed. The methods have. #21stedchat
A3: Technology supports our role as educators, but it should not change it- Tech helps us stay current. increase inquiry in the classroom, and better adapt to changing student needs #21stedchat
A3: I heard someone at #NCTIES18 say "Let technology do what it does best, so you can do what you do best." Ultimately, it helps us to be more efficient and effective at our job (or at least, if we use it well, it should) #21stedchat
A3: Technology is a tool that we can use to create more intriguing lessons. Also, we can differentiate much easier now than before. #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A3: Technology supports our role as educators, but it should not change it- Tech helps us stay current. increase inquiry in the classroom, and better adapt to changing student needs #21stedchat
My friend is an art teacher. I see her using technology with them frequently. There's even an entire unit on the digital manipulation of images. This is, of course, for MS and HS. I don't know about elementary. #21stedchat
A3 For the most part, tech has not transformed the role of teachers. Why? We have not changed our instructional and assessment strategies to leverage tech's power. #21stedchat
A3. Designing technology-integrated learning will continue to play a crucial role. Teachers that do not get onboard with using technology effectively and to promote innovation and high order thinking will be get replaced with those teachers that do #21stedchat
A3: Technology makes it easier for educators to facilitate learning. It does not replace the role of the educator, just makes some things, like personalizing learning, a bit easier to do. #21stedchat
The pendulum is swinging away from testing and standards and toward meeting students' individual goals/needs. We may be in a transitional period but I am optimistic. Teacher pay is in the news. Students are leading national movements & social media PD is a great tool! #21stedchat
Q3: Technology has changed my methods and the fluency with which I can provide answers not already in my head. It has given students an easy way to find answers, so they are more likely to do so. #21stedchat
The pendulum is swinging away from testing and standards and toward meeting students' individual goals/needs. We may be in a transitional period but I am optimistic. Teacher pay is in the news. Students are leading national movements & social media PD is a great tool! #21stedchat
A3. One redefinition involves the multiplication of places I can "be" in one time. Students can refer to different instructional or "How To" videos as they need. I can multiply myself times 29. #21stedchat
I believe the role of educators are to help build the minds of the future. To help students discover who they are and to become strong and confident in themselves #21stedchat#firstchat
A3. We have gone though different stages in our use of technology as a tool for learning. We began very badly and are moving now toward greater success. Students are certainly helping us now as they can guide the way as they are natives. #21stedchat
I heard a teacher say recently, "I'm not doing that (use more engaging lesson materials) because I want to have a life." Sad times. Still... I want to believe that we are moving in the right direction. #21stedchat
A3: When using technology, we need to be sure to still connect with our students and build relationships. Tech should NEVER take over the main teaching. #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A3 I hope that tech doesn’t change our roles as educators at all. I hope that teachers continue to interact with every student though discussion and face-to-face collaboration. Tech must not diminish that. #21stedchat
A3: When using technology, we need to be sure to still connect with our students and build relationships. Tech should NEVER take over the main teaching. #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
I suspect there are more than two directions that rely on soft and hard assessments. The repetitive nature of games can push for greater thinking skills. The use of narrative can shape memory. Etc #21stedchat

Hi! I am Rachel Kestenberg a student teacher from UofM...currently teaching in a kindergarten classroom. I believe our role as educators is to help young people become lifelong learners who can and will contribute to our society in a positive way throughout their lives.
A3: Technology allows us to do things we could not have imagined just a short time ago. But the educator will always be the most important factor in the work being done in the school building. #21stedchat
Hi I'm Hannah Klayman a student teacher from @UMichEducation and I believe technology helps educators become more innovative. It allows us as educators to find a new way to extend their learning outside of the classroom
A3: Technology can provide:
Student Voice, Contribution, Person. Learning, Online Learning, Formative Assessment, Collab. Projects, & Innovation. Technology is not the answer, but it can provide Ss with additional opportunities to demonstrate their understanding. #21stedchat
I heard a teacher say recently, "I'm not doing that (use more engaging lesson materials) because I want to have a life." Sad times. Still... I want to believe that we are moving in the right direction. #21stedchat
A4 I have learned from a lot of experience, that the most current PD is online, such as on Twitter Chats. Then, to research and dive deeper. #21stedchat
A4: The best professional development is Twitter and participating in Twitter Chats. Participating in these have definitely made me a better educator. #21stedchat
I also feel that technology is apart of our day to day lives and not using technology in the classroom does not set up students for the real world #21stedchat
A3: Technology is a tool for teaching that can help offer more options for students. But, the teacher is the one that brings the lesson to life and connects to students. #21stedchat
A4: The best professional development is Twitter and participating in Twitter Chats. Participating in these have definitely made me a better educator. #21stedchat
A4: PD should be tailored to individual teachers. All PD should be experiential and practical. Teachers should be able to take PD and immediately take ideas back to implement in the classroom #21stedchat
I'd argue... Yes. When you recycle a lesson (PPT)/notes over and over for at least 5-10 years, it is way easier than continually reflecting on what current best practices is. Best educators are continually reflecting and making the necessary investment of time. #21stedchat
A4: Since I am a substitute, I haven't been to many PD's. However, I think that online PD's are great, such as these tweetchats! #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A4: I like PD where we are given choice in topics so I can spend more time focused on learning a new skill and less time learning a tool that I already use #21stedchat
My parent ears prick up whenever somebody mentions communicating with parents, but it's true. Tech has expanded the possibilities and opportunities immensely. I wish all were taking advantage of that. #21stedchat
A3: It helps streamline the compliance (attendance, evaluation) tasks and every other administrative mandate. But it adds synchronous communications with parents and students. #21stedchat
A4. Ah, one of my favorite topics! I adore professional development! After sitting in conferences and meetings for 40 years and trying and trying to learn .... #21stedchat
A4 (cont): I also find that the best has come from classroom teachers who know the practical day-to-day of teaching (hence why Twitter chats can be more helpful than an inspirational keynote at a conference) #21stedchat
A4 Professional development should follow the classroom model of learning. Individualized, relevant, with voice/choice for learner. Teachers can/should take charge of their own learning. #21stedchat
A4: While there will always be a need for everyone in a building to learn something, our teachers are becoming great at finding PD for themselves on what they need. These Twitter chats are one example. #21stedchat
A4: While there will always be a need for everyone in a building to learn something, our teachers are becoming great at finding PD for themselves on what they need. These Twitter chats are one example. #21stedchat
A4: I also believe that educators who seek out their own professional development get the most from it. We want our students to love learning, but we must model this and ensure that we are constantly learning as well. My best PD has been ones that I have found myself. #21stedchat
A4. Teachers learning from each other through the books they read and the children they teach - this is the best professional development I think there is. #21stedchat
Wasn't suggesting recycling stuff for 5 - 10 years either. Just that we spend a lot of time outside of school working on school things. What's the balance? #21stedchat
I completely agree! It is so important to continue to change and update our teaching styles. Technology has so much to offer if you are using it effectively for what you are teaching. There is definitely a time and a place for technology in the classroom. #21stedchat
PD that is personalized and teacher driven. Groups like this, allowing teachers to network and learn about innovations daily/weekly, are accelerating the pace of change I think.#21stedchat
I'm not sure I follow. PPTs of years past would be way easier and less time consuming... Transitioning to student centered instruction requires more time for me, at least! #21stedchat
A4 Prof Dev should show teachers that it is possible to give leadership to students and not lose control of the class, that finding new technologies to implement will not require days of searching, that even though methods are changing we are still needed #21stedchat
A4. This is why I created #BookCampPD and spend each Saturday moderating the chat. So that teachers can learn from each other ... <-- this is what I learn after 40 years of others trying to teach me :-) #21stedchat
A4. To be effective in the midst of such change Ts need to become more reflective and being open to examining their craft. This can be done in a personalized PD that meets teachers where they are in their journey #21stedchat
I would argue that if I'm using my planning periods effectively, I shouldn't need to bring work home or sacrifice time with my family. (Still happens, but I'm getting better at this) #21stedchat

I think Ts who take the time to engage in twitter chats like this may not realize that every teacher in the world isn’t at least trying to be engaging. I don’t get it, but I’m not blind to it. #changetheparadigm#21stEdChat
To return them bc my district refused to connect them to our district’s server. I couldn’t get online w them, so they were basically overpriced paperweights #21stedchat
Many teachers by their nature to be best for their students put in a necessary amount of time outside of school. The line is when you start to neglect your personal life/family. We must always be cognizant of this balance. #21stedchat
I struggle with this. I spend much of my planning time w/kids... pulling them from classes or wandering through their other teachers classrooms. #21stedchat

Those first few years of "paying your dues" are hard in every profession, but they are possibly the most consuming in education because your clientele expects you to be as good in your first year as your tenth, which isn't possible. #21stedchat

A5 Within my 4-walls, I AM redefining education. Starts with relationships and confidence, Mindfulness. Then working on mastery through engagement-extreme! #21stedchat
A5: Never stop learning and moving forward. You can't move forward if you're constantly worried about what happened yesterday. #21stedchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
But I have many students who are not ready for student directed school (by upbringing or school has beat it out of them). We need to start in preschool and build from there. #21stedchat

A5: Look at the students in front of me. What do I need to be this year? I don't mean throw away everything I know has worked in the past, but if it isn't working now, I should change it for now. #21stedchat
How about read a book - for the person you will be in five years is based on the books you read and the people you surround yourself with .... #21stedchat
I've talked to some in my school who feel that the students don't care and they are frustrated with the students' efforts so that stop putting forth an effort. It's a cycle and as the leader of the class, we should bring so much enthusiasm our students catch some! #21stedchat

A5: Listen to Other Educators. Take Time For Reflection. Visit Classrooms and Observe. Read and Continue to Grow. Visit Other School Districts. #21stedchat

I don't mean "student directed school" at all. Sorry if I miscommunicated that. I just mean that when we are figuring out the right thing to do in our classrooms, we don't design around the slacker. We shouldn't design PD that way either. #21stedchat

Last week I created a new website in hopes it would help others understand what #BookCampPD is all about. I wanted a place for all of the book's resources to be in one place and for educators to connect with each other. https://t.co/S5pzTtgW6A#21stedchat Check it out if you can?

But, I think it is... For the better. I am now able to know each of my 100+ students better because we are always conferecing, which did not happen before technology (in my classroom). Tech allows me to create engaging lessons that are not ME dependent. #21stedchat
