#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Hello & welcome to the #personalizedPD chat. This engaging chat is here for you each Tuesday 8pm CT. Please say 'Hi" to tonight's moderators @MrsStephenson3 & @froehlichm
Welcome to #personalizedpd chat! Please introduce yourself and let us know your favorite thing about the holidays.
@froehlichm and I are excited to co-moderate tonight!
Hi I'm Jason. Co-author of the #personalizedPD book, co-host of the chat, teacher, innovation integrator, & more. The only thing I love more than triangles is pyramids.
Hello. Kenny Bosch, co-author and co-host of the #personalizedPD book.

Favorite thing about holidays is simply focusing on family and not meetings, emails and activities.
Hey everyone! Mandy Froehlich - Director of Innovation & Technology - Wisconsin. Happy to be co-moderating with @MrsStephenson3 tonight! #personalizedPD
Come on Eileen! Oh my gosh, how many people start singing that song to you on a daily basis? Remember...my name is Mandy. Get Barry Manilow ALL THE TIME. #personalizedpd
Great to have you join us again, Steve. Do you start holiday music before Halloween or are you a traditionalist- no holiday music prior to Thanksgiving?
#personalizedPD
A1 Developing trust takes take. Districts and schools need to continue to put time into building trust. Staff turnover makes this a priority every year.
#personalizedPD
A1 Positive culture will develop trust as a matter of course, just as negative culture can break schools and districts apart. Find the positive in your building and support it! #personalizedpd
A1: The culture & a belief in the professional safety of it can be liberating for some & allow them to take risks. Let's see what happens...You've got our support... #personalizedPD
Agreed. I think too often districts move too fast toward looking for growth and change and the foundation of trust building is skimmed over. #personalizedPD
A1 Building positive culture and climate takes time. Get to know staff individually. Celebrate strengths and encourage them to share with others. #personalizedPD
A1 Have time for collaborating and working together, build relationships and create the support system, and go from there, take risks together, reflect, push forward #personalizedpd
Agree. Educators need to believe that if they take risks they are not going to be fired. It only takes one time to break trust. Hard to rebuild it.
#personalizedPD
A2 Be sure that admin/mentors/teacher leaders model risk-taking and failure - embracing the growth that results and the learning not only Ts can take away but Ss too! #personalizedpd
A2 Celebrate all successes, even those very small. Within every failure there is something to be learned and grow from. Edison's 10,000 attempts at the lightbulb... #personalizedpd
A1: Sometimes the culture doesn't support the innovation, but courage isn't an absence of fear. It's having fears & doing it anyway. Some folks are courageously innovative. #personalizedPD
A2 Admin must model risk taking with students and staff, celebrate the effort and not the result, and learn from what doesn't go as planned. #personalizedPD
A1 teachers and students feel free to think outside the box when they know that they have a leader who is right there with them, encouraging them. They must be assured that they are not on an island if it doesn’t work out. #personalizedPD
I saw "Flash Lessons" at CEL a few weeks ago with @bkulak11 . It was a great idea on how to take risks as a leader and get into classrooms! #personalizedPD
A3- a principal I know is setting her office up on a cart. She is tired of being in the office and is going to hang out in the hallways with the kids and teachers! #amazing#personalizedPD
A2 Model it and talk about it openly, share the failures and successes, gather input from others, encourage one another to take some risks #personalizedpd
A2 Schools need to brag about it, when it goes well and even when it fails. Google celebrated the team that created Google Glass even though it was considered a failure. Celebrated that they were forward thinking and taking risks!
#personalizedPD
A3 If you want Ts on Twitter, you better BE on twitter and them how it's used. If you're not modeling, people will assume it's not important enough to spend their time. Model the type of learning you want to see in the classroom in your own PD. #personalizedpd
A3: Great to see our administrators as mentors of our sixth grade students. So great to see the excitement of Ss sharing when they pass an assessment to mentor. #personalizedPD
A3 Good leaders aren't afraid to get their hands dirty and model/participate. If the expectation is that Ts do it, As should be right in there. Everyone succeeds together. #personalizedpd
Exactly. Then word spreads behind the scenes that "leadership" says one thing but will do another. Everyone focuses on protecting their job. This is the opposite of a creative environment.
#personalizedPD
A3 Loved making a Carpool Karaoke video with an administrator to kick off the school year last year. Showed Ts and Ss it's okay to make a fool of yourself. #PersonalizedPD
A2: Ss, Ts, Admins, coaches all taking risks & being recklessly optimistic that things will work out. Acknowledging when they don't, & learning from the process. Learning IS a process. #personalizedPD
Collective efficacy is the most impactful solution to building a culture of shared leadership. All students can learn. All learners are “our” students. #personalizedPD#WeLeadEd
A4 Within my IT department we've instituted a family courtesy policy. Regardless the attitudes that day, we greet each other and say farewell in a cordial manner. Our interactions have become much better as a result. #personalizedpd
A4 Allow for connections between staff that are unrelated to work. Allow them to build personal relationships. It is much more difficult to speak negatively to, disagree with, and be blatantly unfriendly with someone you have made a personal connection. #personalizedpd
Wow! This is exactly what we talked about, Lindsey! Jay: I’d be happy to share what we’ve done with flash lessons in my district, and yes, admins need to leave the office and model risk taking!
#personalizedpd A1: Trust is the result of several opportunities to work with one another. For one another. If such cultures can be allowed to flourish through projects or learning then trust is bound to be the outcome.
Ohhh man! Up my alley! We kick off our year with a @breakoutEDU, we did “teachers read nice tweets” (a play on the Kimmel bit), we have coaches on whom we lean, we give out kindness cards to each other, we tweet @ each other constantly. Should I keep going? #personalizedPD
The human relationship is such a powerful thing. I took a period out of my schedule today to visit a teacher who tweeted out of character last night and ended up having a fantastic discussion about grading, eval, etc. Get to know ppl & everyone benefits. #personalizedpd
A4: Staff have been taking turns planning off campus activities. Had a great Pre-Thanksgiving dinner at a colleagues restaurant, 5K coming up in Dec, cookie swap. #PersonalizedPD
This made me think, I try to take out my staff for holiday or summer vacation meals, or for a round after standardized testing, etc. Good team building. #personalizedPD
A4 LISTEN to the teachers. They are in a unique position to develop close relationships with the students and therefore can advise the district/bldg as to what is needed. The key to innovative change. https://t.co/U9HwOUdtgN#personalizedPD
A4 Provide uninterrupted time to meet inside of school hours and keep it sacred. And a chance to get together outside of school on a regular basis doesn't hurt, either. #personalizedPD
A4: We hand out raffle tickets at PD for several reasons, but one way to get a ticket is to use our "innovation stations". Building space for innovation time is important. #personalizedPD
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
Didn't get that sweet Lurker Tank that you wanted on Black Friday or Cyber Monday? Don't worry, we have your Lurker Tanks here.
Feel free to join in, or not, it's cool.
#personalizedPD
A5: I like to drop positive notes in teacher's mailboxes when I see them applying things they learn into their classroom activities. Notes of appreciation go a long way! We must encourage teachers to take risks. It is how our students will grow! #leadlap#personalizedpd
We abandoned sit and get PD so we can actually talk to each other, we go to each other’s events, we started #chsonegoodthing, we genuinely like each other, we have an amazing superintendent responsible for most of this. #personalizedPD
I think that is because we have not been praised much so anything feels great.
Schools need to be more creative on how they praise educators, find outside funds or simply tell your school families in some way how proud you are of your staff.
#personalizedPD
A5 We don't do enough of this. I have been trying to send personal emails thanking them for specific things...trying something new, helping someone out, etc. I want them to know I appreciate them. Not enough celebrations, though. #personalizedpd
As an #educoach, I try to listen to what people mean, not what they say. Sometimes what sounds like negativity is an issue to consider. #personalizedPD
A5 Encourage staff to lead PD, compensate them for their time, staff facilitating book discussions, classroom visits with admin covering. #personalizedPD
A5: #personalizedPD New doesn't always mean better. So if a system is designed through which teaching is impacted and as a result learning is exemplified, then schools have the duty to help that become part of the culture of the community in some way.
Those sound great! Staff want to know their principals as real people. Spending time outside of school and being friendly is the easiest way to build relationships. #personalizedPD
This made me think, I try to take out my staff for holiday or summer vacation meals, or for a round after standardized testing, etc. Good team building. #personalizedPD
Yes...sometimes complaining is complaining, but sometimes it's an underlying issue. And if the complaining IS just complaining, well, being a good listener is being a good coach, too. #personalizedpd
appreciation is one thing-- acceptance into a culture of mediocrity is another. Ts are hard on themselves. True Professional Learning starts with the culture of growth. #personalizedPD
A5: Our staff present Rock Star Awards (painted rocks or other items) to colleagues at monthly staff meetings to recognize one another. It frequently gets emotional. #personalizedPD
A5 If a teacher proposes a wonderful idea that yields great results, pump up their ego and don't miss the opportunity to give them credit for thinking differently. This encourages everyone really invest in the success of the school. #personalizedPDhttps://t.co/U9HwOUdtgN
A6: Observe how often teachers are collaborating and sharing tools. When you see things like @flipgrid and @padlet and @quizizz taking off in classrooms you know that teachers are seeing the positive impact. Let teacher leaders share out at faculty meetings! #personalizedpd
Absolutely a great way! Also important to ask about something personal for staff, even if small. People are proud - find that and support them in it and they will value your relationship more as a whole. #personalizedpd
They keep it. Some pay it forward and present a rock the following month, and others may jump in at any time and present rocks. Some are creatively themed. #personalizedPD
Everyone at #personalizedPD if you haven't followed Marvin yet you are missing out!
This man firmly believes in all the ideas we discuss here every week. I pretty much favorite everything he tweets. Thank you for joining us again.
A4 LISTEN to the teachers. They are in a unique position to develop close relationships with the students and therefore can advise the district/bldg as to what is needed. The key to innovative change. https://t.co/U9HwOUdtgN#personalizedPD
A6: I am a big supporter of formative assessments and watching growth and sharing the excitement of it with my kids. I am an ELA T that loved those #s#personalizedPD
Geez. There is just so much SMART going on right now in the #personalizedPD chat. You, yes you, are such an important contributor. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Yaaaaaas! Love it, Korny! We dressed up old trophies from our childhood and would give them out monthly. Same idea - we would take secret e-mails nominating people or let the previous winner choose a new one. Awesome! #personalizedpd
#personalizedPD Good idea. The only problem is if not all staff are getting the rocks at some point. Have seen schools where certain subjects are constantly recognized more than others.
A6 Data! But not too much! Keep your #personalizedpd focused and you will be able to assess the impact in your environment. Plus you don't want to overwhelm Ss with tons of new things and mastery of none!
It is all quite simply. Treat people like people. Think some admins/leaders are afraid to bond w/staff for fear of conflict of interest if discipline would arise.
Build a great relationship &that would never be a problem! You can always talk plainly w/ppl U trust #personalizedPD
My goal is to send 5 a week. They need to be specific and I won't send one unless I've spent time in that person's classroom. That was my goal at the beginning of the year. #personalizedpd
A7 I think the best coaching is when everyone has a coach from aids to admin we all need to grow and learn and creat culture of learning where risk taking is part of #PersonalizedPD
A7 Created a Technology Coach position to support #edtech and #stem in district and @Mr_F_Learning has been doing a great job developing teacher buy-in. Creating that relationship and trust is the hardest part! #personalizedpd
A7: Embedded coaching comes through our PLCs. Our teacher leaders do an awesome job mentoring new staff, modeling lessons, and supporting each other. Admin host power PD sessions and we are starting a book study to model close reading and reflection. #personalizedpd
I wouldn't say never, but many conflicts can be avoided. Those that can't are less confrontational because a positive relationship exists outside the circumstances causing the conflict. #personalizedpd
A7 -coaching is essential to the reflective practice of teaching and learning. Can be a position or a person or a teaching partner. Coaching can also be a mindset and vehicle to improve. #personalizedPD
Q8 What are some examples of how districts/buildings have provided the opportunities for educators to be creative and study those creative passions in education? #personalizedpd
A2: The best teachers are risk takers. Admin needs to encourage risk taking by accepting things that consequently go “wrong” as just part of the learning process. #reflection by all needs to then be the next step in the risk taking process #support#encouragement#personalizedPD
Again, that is the point. Teachers feel the same way too. That is how they know you are a real person.
Sports teams have team building activities by NOT playing that actual sport. Same is true in all professions- bond outside of your job then work will be easier. #personalizedPD
I will send some stuff your way. I have a cycle of coaching I work through based on 4 outcomes that support our PD focus. They choose a path and we go from there. #personalizedPD
Q8 What are some examples of how districts/buildings have provided the opportunities for educators to be creative and study those creative passions in education? #personalizedpd
Q8 What are some examples of how districts/buildings have provided the opportunities for educators to be creative and study those creative passions in education? #personalizedpd
A8: We have created innovation stations at all district PD. There are tables with swag on them and Ts can sit and collaborate and innovate. #nostringsattached#personalizedPD
A8: I pretty much accept any proposal for an elective because the teacher is passionate about material, kids will follow that passion anywhere, and teacher is validated/trusted. Win-win-win. #PersonalizedPD
A8: We have blown up our building PD structures to provide more personalized opportunities for our Ts in an effort to personalize learning for Ss. Also district level micro-credential offerings for professional learning. #PersonalizedPD
A8 We have used edCamp style learning, but not to study passions necessarily even though they could have chosen something like that. I'd say we should have a passion edcamp, but that sounds all kinds of wrong. But you know what I mean. #personalizedpd
I just started working on a rubric for a T to assess the impact and effectiveness of her tech tools she is trying. It is a new lens on each tool. #personalizedPD
A8: We have redesigned our media center to incorporate maker spaces, revamped our STEM program to all hands on learning, art teacher is teaching "free choice" in regards to art design, teachers are implementing genius hour. Schedule allows for common planning. #personalizedpd
At my wife's work they had an all-day bags tournament. Everyone was paid to be there as it took place during work hrs. People feel valued. When asked to work longer hrs on other days they feel like a team and WANT to help out. Let's get more creative w/our PD days #personalizedPD
HA! my 2nd answer was going 2 b you must b willing as a coach to b honest and vulnerable. . . perfect example, I don't know how 2 tweet! #personalizedPD
did I do it? :)
A9: Design challenge using the design thinking process. Ts identified problems they wanted to solve in our building and took it through the design process. #personalizedPD
A9 We're working on getting better at this one. Created a #peqpantherpd hashtag to share PD on twitter. @flipgrid is another asynchronous feedback tool. Time is precious so flexible feedback is critical for staff participation. #personalizedpd
Agreed. Never is improbable and yes, can be less confrontational if both sides have a feeling of respect and trust built by a relationship built over time. #personalizedPD
So, it turns out this is called cornhole out in NJ, which the admin team here is fantastic at. May go back to the earlier conversation about word pronunciation though... #personalizedPD
