Nathan Adams, Juneau, special education teacher. My favorite thing to do over the 4th weekend is to relax and do a 'me' activity.

What was the new curricula for you?

A1 95.5% graduation rate in Kodiak!

Reading Wonders. Not really curric, but materials…But Math in Focus is still pretty new to us, too.

I have my head halfway around reading wonders, because I spent personal resources there, MiF not so much.

What is the new school? what made it so good?

Have a contract as a SSOS Coach in Nunapitchuk. I visit approx 4 days 1x month

In the city the age distribution of the population shows 41.8% under the age of 18
-
offering things that our students are interested in i.e. CTE and real world certifications, trauma informed care, & more
-
Trust and confidence grew in the relationship between myself and the staff and students. Looking forward to next year!

Really regret missing the on trauma informed care. Hope to have it again next year!

A2: not did I survive my transition from secondary to primary special education but I wholeheartedly signed up for a second year.

It can't be a year one change, what has been going on?

A2: Still managing to provide EdTech PD to AK sch districts & play granny nanny even w new coaching contract which is abt 1/2 time

it's a nice statistic to have after years of work, yes, it hasn't happened overnight

checking in from Auke Bay. Eye opening to learn more of what's going on in other states this yr.

educate the planet? I'm still trying to figure out how to do it here in Kodiak! shared leadership, RTI, PLC's to start

What advice would you give Alaska educators, based on what you've learned?

Thx. More yes than no. Some things took more time than expected. Tough start w/complex schedule.Got better...

The lack of teachers entering and staying is greater than feared, esp in neediest area.

What are the neediest areas and what did you learn we need to do about it?

A3.. Haven’t totally abandoned my children this first year! .

develop a schedule that allows students to personalize educational priorities to fit what they need

Very important, I liked you took your Son? for his driver's test at a time I was looking for you in your office.

Also Tenn cancelled their state tests and Mississippi's scores are questionable. Fontas&Pinnell best for literacy in US.

Rr areas, low soceco areas; need to address housing equity and access to equal funding within districts. More trauma trng needed.

Share the joys you find in teaching. Tell yr stories. This is a fab profsn n we need to encourage n suprt others.

A4: 1 thing that is meaningful to me that I learned this year is professional learning with gen-ed teachers produces great gains.

Having a hard time with A4! My whole experience in a village school was eye-opening. Amazed at the struggles.

A4: Education in a school needs to be personal to the students in that school.

Pick one, pick the eyes of that one kid, that one time that....

A school is comprised of a unique group of students. Just because the sch is in your state doesn't make it same. Esp AK
-
A4: every school community has needs and those should be honored and reflected in their site goals. Not 1-Sz-fits-all.

I taught 14 yrs in Ktn, considered a rural sch. Nothing like tchng in Nunapitchuk. Some S have same needs, but many diff
-

I'd add even within a district. Needs are diff. PLCs should reflect those needs.

A5 cont. it sounds like local differentiation is needed, and when that happens gets a 95.5% grad rate.
