#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Welcome to ! Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
Great to see you Mike! Welcome!
I'm Noah in Denver. Big believer in using Badges to credential awesomeness. Proud to be part of Badge System
Intros: Mike, tech coordinator at a middle school in the ATL suburbs, looking to start badging/gamification by Jan.
I'm Rich in So Cal - I use digital badges with K12 educators for EdTech PD
Hello Chris from Robin Hood land England - Badges no but yes to certificates. I teach adults. https://t.co/ynzvShvNna
Do you know ? She's also in Georgia and launching some
Anh in California, don't teach anymore. But I do things with badges. I usually lurk...
Awesome and welcome! Thanks for ensuring we're multinational tonight:) Hopefully in Canada will join..
Q1: What kinds of Badges have you earned or seen offered at conferences?
A1: I've seen badges awarded after attending sessions & for demonstrating competency after putting learning into action
Sweet! Was the demonstration of competency Badge issued by presenter or the conference itself?
Hi Anh! is awesome and glad you are with us
I'm Michael in Rockville, MD. I'm interested in badges & for . Hello!
A1: Do the ribbons you get at conferences count as "badges?" If so, our state's conference has tons of different ones.
A1: I've mostly seen conference Badges related to attendance...
A1: acknowledging participation in a learning activity (STEM lab) & for attending a student showcase at a conf
Great question! Don't see why they can't count as Badges. They'd have to be digital to be Digital Badges though
Check out bringing people together. Bravo.
Hi Michael - great to have you
A1: Participate is now issuing Badges to people who reflect after an . Any thoughts about that yet?
Q2: Why should/shouldn’t conferences consider issuing Badges? What’s the point?
...does it still work the same if these are not issued but collected and assigned by the user themselves.
https://t.co/V91KbkwExs 's awesome, was against participatory badges for long time, until I got hit by an epipthany
A1: Participate is now issuing Badges to people who reflect after an . Any thoughts about that yet?
A2: I think it is helpful to award badges when they can clearly communicate acquisition of new skill, knowledge or experiences
No, at least I've never gotten one "myself," only for things like attending certain sessions or trying some app.
What was the ah-ha moment?
I was exactly the same way - took me time, but & had great rationale https://t.co/NZfzFEkOIi

You are welcome - tonight is 1 hour earlier than yesterday here in the UK now we are GMT instead of BST
I agree w Rich! When it is meaningful, it's helpful! https://t.co/FnhxSmvGa3
A2: I think it is helpful to award badges when they can clearly communicate acquisition of new skill, knowledge or experiences
A2: Conf should, even participatory badges represent hard to quantify learned skills. And a track record of specialization
I'd be cool with getting badges at conferences, but would need them digital/online. Don't hand me a piece of paper right then.
Great rationale for conf Badges! At the least, they can *signal* toward interest, passion, learning https://t.co/Mt7q1kkBb3
A2: Conf should, even participatory badges represent hard to quantify learned skills. And a track record of specialization
To clarify, you want both or just the digital?
Ready for our third question?
A2 "what's the point" <--been thinking about that. badge would need clear "here's what you did" for me to show to my P & brag.
Q3: What types of Badges do you hope to see conferences offer in future? Why will attendees care?
I'd be happy with just dig, but maybe an option to print, stick on wall. But dig. first in context of conference.
Agreed . I've got no beef w/ participatory badges. The metadata should make clear what the badge represents.
But my thing is, if the conf. this week offered badges, is that alone enough to influence my behavior? I'm not sure.
I agree-the info that displays when a digital badge is clicked (metadata) is an important element
A3: I'd love to see conferences use micro-credentials to replace signature sheets for continuing ed credits. More meaningful
That's exactly what I'm talking about! I need to make a pot of coffee and read your blog start-to-finish one day.
Great critical point. What's the value proposition beyond giving earner recognition?
jajaja. Hope you'll also push back on my ideas, poke holes!
https://t.co/excUgU5jKb Why should it impact behavior at all? Badges quantify and quality data of things already done.
But my thing is, if the conf. this week offered badges, is that alone enough to influence my behavior? I'm not sure.
Nice. Did you all notice 's seamless definition of key here. Teach! + !
Then I'm back to "what's the point?" If I'm doing it anyway, this is one more thing to keep up w at the conf?
I liked the game that put together using at . Added to the fun & experience
Good question Ahn. Do you think it's motivation? Badge chasers seeking creds, doing what's best for themselves
One last question on the outro...
Q4: Let’s reflect! What are your takeaways from this week’s chat?
Hi Jay - that was a fun way to engage the conference!
A4: The needle has moved on this in last year...
Was: *if* we should Badge
Now: *how* should we Badge
A4: I'm def. cool with badges at conferences but would want more info on how it works before I get on the hype train.
Motivational if there's an above bar benefit, what happens when all PD confs issue badges? https://t.co/bHm12Yc9ua
Good question Ahn. Do you think it's motivation? Badge chasers seeking creds, doing what's best for themselves
A4: Conferences are wise to consider why earners will care, who they will share Badges with (like principals) and why
A4 Also, I could see finding successful examples of this and modifying for local use: planning days, faculty mtgs, etc.
Thanks to the new Badge Chatters who joined us! Thanks to regulars and thanks to the lurkers!
Love it. Think that could truly get at the heart of the meaningfulness issue for you
Have a Badge worthy week everyone! Thanks for being here and continuing the learning!
fyi, 1st chat in Dec will be our 2yr anniversary. Any ideas to mark it?
U get atomic record of PD. Currently conf attendance not really recognized in industry @mikevigilant https://t.co/Gwo7MSzxtm
Then I'm back to "what's the point?" If I'm doing it anyway, this is one more thing to keep up w at the conf?
what about having a special badge for all participants?
.. The 1st time I've been wished a "badge worthy" week. Is that a competency badge or participatory? Just asking ;)
A2 like this idea - tangible benefit especially with soft skills development
