#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

I'm going to throw out the first Q and see if we can bring out any lurkers!
From Manitoba, host of CanCred.ca, a service based on Open Badge Factory in Finland. But mostly about in general

Jumping in from LA. Sue from
A1 it can take recognition Beyond seat time.
A1 also, badges can become an index for a school leader to search in order to find which teacher have expertise
A1: I think especially any profession that requires for maintaining licensure is a great place to use !
Michael from Maryland/DC. Like , I'll be in and out but look forward to slow-chatting the archived if I must. Hello!
Hey Thanks for joining us! Here's Q1 again: What types of adult learning might we credential with Badges?
A1. If you can demonstrate that you've gained knowledge/insight/skills, you can badge it.
A1 Beyond K12, lots! Within K12: PD, Adult Basic Ed, recognizing parents, employers & other community orgs 4 community service
A1: I've seen badges used most effectively for but also from everyone between nurses and CPAs
demonstrate is the key word. Evidence as artifacts for accomplishments
Honestly, I'm currently taking my first online course since 2005, but not sure that it's badgable. It's new to me as a student
Haha, I can't believe I get to say this to you! Please include on your replies!!
i love the community orgs idea. Any example to share?
I want to build a portfolio of the things I've created. I want to show off my new skillzzz to the world.
Interesting is it something about the subject matter or the assessment approach?
Q2 coming down the pipeline
Q2: What are some present/future benefits to Badging adult PD?
still the beginning, but feels more informational than demonstrate-able. No product yet, but just conversation
Efficiency, efficiency, efficiency! Community beyond your locale. New ideas from new people
A2: The ability to store badges and display them with the evidence offered to earn them makes them better than a resume!
A2 relicensure credit based on competency, not seat time
. Wish I had more right now. Working up stuff with school community coordinators in Quebec. But orgs can be badged
Yeah, badges really come in handy when you need to recognize learners for their achievements
This is also one of my favorites We need to a customized , both for and other professions
A2. It's the ability to try new things. Somehow trying a badge seems less intimidating than taking an in person course.
A2 Filling unmet needs in credentialing. Mind is currently blown by 's disruptive concept of non-consumption.
One among a huge list of benefits for using for . https://t.co/dRtUr3iGBm

All right Get ready for Q3!
Definitely not ! I look forward to reading this!
Q3: What are the challenges we should consider around implementing Badges for adult PD?
Isn't it what we hope for for our Ss? Dip your toe in and eventually you find yourself swallowed up.
A3: being disciplined, starting small, meeting users needs before big buildout
Biggest challenge for : Getting districts and states to recognize badges as sufficient evidence for PD credits
A3. Isolation is hard. I want badges that bring me in touch with other learners so we can build together. Keep badges relevant
A3 Don't get caught up in quality; thinkmore abt utility, usefulness, fitness for purpose. Flies don't require sledgehammers.
Excellent point. Maybe keeping things bite sized is key.
yes, badges should build community
Ok it's time for takeaways!
Q4: Let’s reflect! What are your takeaways from this week’s chat?
Seat time is not equal to learning. Districts are recognizing it...keep moving up until quality pd is recognized.
A4: Starting small is good both from the learner and teacher perspective! Seeing what inspires and following is the best path!
A4 Schools are communities that form part of larger communities. Badges can help integrate and bridge those communities
A4. I need to get more involved with formalizing recognition on the part of districts/states to get badged learning accepted.
Thanks for your insights on ! I'm looking forward to digging deeper into !
Thanks again for joining for joining and for all your contributions! Make sure to join us again next week!
