I'm Kate from South Florida and a dream I have is to travel the world in order to have a wider view of the "ART of living" by interacting with people from around the world #formativechat
Hey all, my name is Jeff, and I am a math intervention teacher in Kennewick Wa.
Last year, I was working as a Process Improvement manager, and my dream was to be a math teacher. So based on the opening question, I'm actually living my dream now.

Hey everyone, David here! I am the @goformative Head of Community and soon to be full-time coding student! I am currently in SF and one of my dreams is to become a software engineer! #formativechat
Dan from Wisconsin. I partner with students to help them learn science. A dream I have is that my son will not have to struggle through life. #formativechat
Hey hey Dina from VA Beach 😎 Professionally my dream is to help others integrate technology in their everyday classroom habits. Personally the dream is to make it to Japan one day! #FormativeChat#ArtsEd
Brian, 8th grade science from IL...my dream is that all students know they can succeed & get the opportunity to know what success feels like #formativechat
I usually can't make this chat due to the time and a meeting at school. However with the day off I thought I would give it a try. Thankfully the Monday meeting is also going to stop earlier, so I should get home in time in the future. #formativechat
Hey #formativechat! I'm Greg, an elementary school principal from Northern California. I have a dream of meeting @heARTISTatWORK in person someday! She's inspiring and I can't want learn from her (and y'all) tonight!
A1: The most effective formative assessments lead to iterations in our process of learning! We must communicate and show our students that formative assessments cause reflection and changes to the learning process based on results. #formativechat
A1) formative assessments should be focused on growth, feedback, improvements, change. Focusing on these processes leads to deeper understanding, which really is the goal, isn't it? #formativechat
A2: Formative assessments are about checking progress along the journey. It's not all or nothing, but identifies what our Ss haven't learned YET. #formativechat
A1 @heARTISTatWORK#formativechat If you approach art making as process not product it is very similar to formative since it is feedback along the way, allowing time for the student to reflect and process their course of action.
Formative assessments inform where Ss are in their individual learning process. They all Ss and Ts to make adjustments to what they are working on. #FormativeChat
A2: Formative assessments are about checking progress along the journey. It's not all or nothing, but identifies what our Ss haven't learned YET. #formativechat
A1- I love this question! Focusing on the process allows us to think about our thinking, to dive deeper into understanding the concept. Not to mention the process tends to be messy in art, much like learning. #FormativeChat
A1: Formative assessments can really help Ts to understand where Ss learning and understanding is. With this the process can be changed in the moment to meet the needs of all. Why wait until the end to make changes to what was finished. #formativechat
A1: As author Ursula LeGuin once wrote: "It's great to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters in the end." The arts and formative assessment are both about the journey. It's about the learning that happens along the way. #formativechat
A1: Focusing on the process each time improves our technique. Each time we work on a project and focus on our technique, the end product improves. Formative assessments allow us to assess our technique as we go. #formativechat
A1. When I think of formative assessments, I believe that you have to be deliberate in how you present them. Whether formal or informal, there is a process to it.
If your formative assessment doesn't have a process behind it, the result will not be valuable.
#formativechat
Stopping in to #formativechat. Thanks as always for the tag... don’t know much about this topic but interested to listen in on anything with an arts connection!
A1: The arts cause us to step back and review our work, measure twice and cute once. For native's force us to do the same, measure where students are multiple times before the summative to determine what review or remediation is needed! #formativechat
A1: If you’re assessing right, you give various forms of assessments throughout the unit. Then use that data to drive your instruction before you get to the final product that shows all the knowledge gained from start to finish with check point/ focus areas. #formativechat
Hey, #formativechat friends! I'm a literacy coach and international literacy consultant based in Tokyo. I'm happy to jump in and learn with all of you!
A1: The creative process requires a lot of feedback and focus on the process. The final product might be messy, but the learning is beautiful. #formativechat
A1: The process is the most valuable part. Life & learning are both about the journey and not always the destination. The final product is only as good as the experience along the way! #FormativeChat#ArtsEd
Argh! At volleyball pictures for my daughter, plus trying to stay alive with low battery power on my phone. Will do my best to chime in, Rachelle. #formativechat

A1 You take the skills and break them down. You assess them individually with multiple checks and adjustments. By building on the skills you come up with a work of art. The product is the sum of all the smaller parts. #formativechat
a1: I don’t care how a student “gets there” as long as they do. I provide options... in arts terms—different media— for Ss to demonstrate learning. #formativechat
A1: There is so much that goes into a piece of art, just like there is so much that goes into formative assessment personal growth. If we can shine a light on the process...we can help Ss discover and seize new learning opportunities. #formativechat
A1 Formative assessments are all about looking at the process. How are students working through a concept? Where are they wrong? What do they need for next steps? #formativechat
A1~
~ makes me think of meeting the kids where they are, building on those skills & forward motion in Learning that involves innovation, curiosity, exploration & ingenuity
#formativechat
A1- Ability learn from and use mistakes to learn and create from. Can approach from different angles. Feedback seen as opportunity to create better. Seen as a craft not a product. #formativechat
It is very similar to ballet. The instructor will stop you and correct the basics of your performance practice immediately. They will replay that music until you have it right. #formativechat
A1: LEARNING is a lifelong process—not a product. Formative assessments help us see where students are in their process of learning—most importantly they should allow students to reflect upon how things are going and the steps they want to take next. 🌟 #formativechat
There is process in learning. Too often T's are stuck in a poor process of their own-text, worksheet, test repeat for next unit, w/o opportunity for revision, or relearning. Then comes the big, hi-stakes test, with exam prep, cramming and more moving on when done.
#formativechat
A1: The formative assessment process is just that, a process. There is the thinking stage, that leads to the action stage. Them there is perfecting, editing, and live learning. #formativechat
A1: Working just to complete an end-product is not learning, it's completing a task. The process is the learning - improving knowledge, improving skills, improving understanding, and applying that learning at every stage. #formativechat
A1: The process is the most valuable part. Life & learning are both about the journey and not always the destination. The final product is only as good as the experience along the way! #FormativeChat#ArtsEd
Like the arts, I’d like to think that humans don’t fit into neat little boxes. And have different ways of expressing themselves and demonstrating what they know. #formativechat A1
A1) We have to get away from the notion that we are perfect on our first attempt. Learning is a journey that requires #Feedback#TrialAndError and permission to not be identified for who we are in the moment. #Growth comes with #time and #experience. #formativechat
Hi everyone! A1: Process over product makes me think of #growthmindset and #notyet. When Ss earnestly engage in the process, the product inevitably improves. It IS about process in all content areas. Ss don't do well on a test or a project w/o iterations& revision #formativechat
A2 If? In science modeling is a big part of the formative process. Many models have a taste of the arts which is a great connection to students background knowledge The arts make FAs easier #formativechat
A1: Art is a form of self-expression and enables appreciation from multiple angles...you can likewise create formatives that allow Ss to express their unique thinking and allow for appreciation from diff. perspectives (self, peers, Ts, audience) #formativechat
A2: I think the Arts allow for individual expression which would open students to taking risks and taking their own paths to learning without feel constraints. Imagine that! #formativechat
A2: I think the arts could be used as assessment tools to gauge the understanding of core standards/objectives. Would increase engagement levels and provide an array of products that show learning. #formativechat
We are constantly working to prefect the piece in art and when conducting formative assessments. I know when we are working on a show, it's always being tweaked, as should student learning. There's always room for growth, improvement and new discoveries. #formativechat
A1 Jeri fr Jersey English T-The process in art is like the list of requirements needed 4 final product 2 find success. Formative assessments r short, quick assessments 2 measure where students r so success can b found on later summative. Both are the baby steps! #FormativeChat
If arts were integrated into the core subjects I would most definitely encourage students to utilize creativity as a formative assessment #formativechat
Don’t think I’m going to make it tonight. Got back from bball practice. Gotta see if I can fire hammies. If I don’t do it now, they might not until Fri. should have blogged about this ordeal. Tried finding someone who’s been here and I can’t. Cant be the only one. #formativechat
A2: Somewhat! I try to appeal to the interests of all students as much as possible, this includes through music, art, science, history, pop culture, and more. Teaching English gives me those liberties! #formativechat
#FormativeChat you are absolutely right! It’s a lifelong process! And if we say the final product says we are done then we have stopped any further exploration
A1: LEARNING is a lifelong process—not a product. Formative assessments help us see where students are in their process of learning—most importantly they should allow students to reflect upon how things are going and the steps they want to take next. 🌟 #formativechat
When I do project based units, I do more unofficial check ins similar to formative assessments. That way I can help in the process as well by asking questions to get the students to think/be creative. #FormativeChat
A2: I'm not sure that I would. My most powerful formative assessments are when I get to chat with my Ss and observe their understanding by listening. #formativechat
A2: Absolutely! One thing I love about arts is the social learning aspect of it all. Whether you're an individual artist getting critiques and feedback from peers or a single voice within a choir of singers, you are constantly learning and growing WITH others. #formativechat
We are constantly working to prefect the piece in art and when conducting formative assessments. I know when we are working on a show, it's always being tweaked, as should student learning. There's always room for growth, improvement and new discoveries. #formativechat
A1- I also see that revisions and a variety of iterations are not just accepted, but encouraged in the arts when creating. Imagine if we applied this to the "core" subjects! #FormativeChat
A2 No. As an edu of an elective, not core, I have a different perspective. While the largest room in my house is the room for improvement, I'm pretty happy how I've built in regular performance based competency measurements that we can consider formative.
#formativechat
A1: With all things, there’s a difference between learning and performing. And it is critical we separate these two so Ss recognize feedback from judgement. #formativechat#sblchat#atassess
In small schools, art instruction sort of defaults to the ELA teacher. We get the drama, we do hands on projects. My Ss did a project where they tied art from the same time period to their novels. #FormativeChat
A2: The arts can & should be a way for students to show what they know while they are learning it. When I was in the classroom, we would take 3 column notes. Column 1 = key word; column 2 = definition; column 3 = their drawing, acronym, slogan, or one word. #formativechat
A2 Working with English Language Learners I often see them respond through drawing when they can't find the words to express themselves. Art is already incorporated into the curriculum of creative teachers and students. #formativechat
There is process in learning. Too often T's are stuck in a poor process of their own-text, worksheet, test repeat for next unit, w/o opportunity for revision, or relearning. Then comes the big, hi-stakes test, with exam prep, cramming and more moving on when done.
#formativechat
A2: I feel the arts and Eng go hand in hand. My formatives wouldn't change much since I already allow for different types of assessments, and I bring in the arts as much as possible: write a song, create #arvrinedu Hero's Journey, create a cartoon strip summary. #formativechat
A2: I don’t know if it would necessarily change my approach but it certainly would require me to gain some more knowledge about how I could integrate them seamlessly into a unit of study. I’d like to think of myself as a free and creative thinker! 💁🏻♂️ #FormativeChat
Absolutely! Are we looking for the task or the learning? Of course there will be times a task needs to be completed, but not at the expense of the learning. #FormativeChat
A1: Working just to complete an end-product is not learning, it's completing a task. The process is the learning - improving knowledge, improving skills, improving understanding, and applying that learning at every stage. #formativechat
Hey Linda, I have been teaching #sketchnote to my 8th grade STEAM class the past 2 weeks, braving it, and thanks to @HeckAwesome for encouragement! #formativechat
A2: I don't teach core subjects, I really think integrating arts into core wouldn't change it for me. I quilt, & I plan out my pattern, I make changes while in the process due to what I see & how my brain "clicks". Core and the arts would be the same way. #formativechat
A2. this is a tough one. I want to make a comment about observing glitter, but I'll withhold.
My formative assessments would stay the same. I feel like having the Ss show me their model drawings for a story problem would fit right in with the Arts.
#formativechat
A1: The formative assessment process is just that, a process. There is the thinking stage, that leads to the action stage. Them there is perfecting, editing, and live learning. #formativechat
A1: The formative assessment process is just that, a process. There is the thinking stage, that leads to the action stage. Them there is perfecting, editing, and live learning. #formativechat
A2 coming up with multiple iteration models pull in the arts process. They can LEGO builds, drawings, lists, an equation or whatever they thing is a representation that leads to displaying knowledge gained #FormativeChat@Rdene915
#formativechat A2 No - it wouldn't change - there should be many opportunities for students to reflect at various stages within their work and formative assessment allows for this - regardless of the subject students need time to process and reflect.
A2: This is how #STEAM works. Rigidity of structures (schedules and periods) make it dificult for this type of collab, but the process used in art is essential in #designthinking#formativechat
A2) Whoa! yes! I teach math - what a great place to use art as a form of formative assessment! My gears just started cranking... there's got to be lots of good stuff out there about this. #formativechat
A2: One of the many things I love about working within the @iborganization is that there are many transdisciplinary integrations across all subjects. The conceptual understandings and approaching to learning skills are all transferable. #formativechat
A2: We try to incorporate the arts as much as possible but if it were standard practice I think the creative process would be much more strong. Ss would feel more comfort in the journey rather than every little activity or assessment holding so much weight. #FormativeChat#ArtsEd
A2: I always integrated art. As an English teacher I had students create artistic representations of what we were reading - all the time! We were even able to hang our art on the Student Wall of a nearby gallery! So, I guess I wouldn't change much.... #formativechat
A2: I do think that it would lend itself to more creative formative assessments. There would be more choice and freedom of expression---at least in ELA and history. #formativechat
A2-Give Ss an opportunity to express their understanding of a topic in another way. Have new perspectives on concepts and promote and recognize new ways to assess learning. #formativechat
A2. I am not sure that I would change. There is an art to the way we present ourselves, or at least one should feel comfortable enough with themselves to express this. So the art of rational thought should be expressed and assessed at face value. #formativechat
A1: This reminds of of the 1:1 assessments I do with my kinders—I can hear their thinking and reasoning and not just a number they wrote down or a bubble they filled in #formativechat
A1- not so much for me, but I think that is because I have an #ECE background and we promote process over product and whole child in all we do. I do think it would make some activities more "acceptable" to others at times. #FormativeChat
A1) We have to get away from the notion that we are perfect on our first attempt. Learning is a journey that requires #Feedback#TrialAndError and permission to not be identified for who we are in the moment. #Growth comes with #time and #experience. #formativechat
Thinking of a band or chorus, the director or conductor knows what the final price should sound like. He or she works with individual sections and parts prior to putting the whole thing together. The parts are necessary for the whole to be effective. #formativechat
A2: I'm always pushing my Ss, & our kids, to incorporate their artistic talents into their core subjects. Why can't you #sketchnote to a lecture or compose a piece of music to showcase interpretation of mood in a story? I want something other than what's been done. #formativechat
A2: This is how #STEAM works. Rigidity of structures (schedules and periods) make it dificult for this type of collab, but the process used in art is essential in #designthinking#formativechat
I love that @davidbfrench pushes us into this way of thinking. Hopefully it will catch on in the bigger world of education. It truly is the way the world of innovation works. #FormativeChat
A2: I'm all for integration when it makes sense. But I am not sure how integrated art can be with some subjects, unless more time is dedicated to those subjects to allow for better integration.
How would you integrate art with science/math/SS in a meaningful way?
#formativechat
A2) Whoa! yes! I teach math - what a great place to use art as a form of formative assessment! My gears just started cranking... there's got to be lots of good stuff out there about this. #formativechat
A2 #FormativeChat I’ve already integrated arts into my English lessons & it has changed my formative & summative assessments. My summative assessment for my Maus I (graphic novel) unit involves hand-drawn comics. A formative for vocabulary is Visual Vocabulary!
I'm highly competitive, and I'm sure colleagues might say I'm good at #suckupchat , so I'll have to learn from you two, the masters, and join in. :) #BetterTogether#Formativechat
awesome! that's great that you create a culture of learning where Ss and peers alike are working to understand and appreciate one another. #formativechat
Good thinking! I also think of those with certain learning disabilities or other characteristics that make traditional means of expression challenging. Artistic forms of expression can be a sort of UDL. #formativechat A2
A2 Working with English Language Learners I often see them respond through drawing when they can't find the words to express themselves. Art is already incorporated into the curriculum of creative teachers and students. #formativechat
This is something that I have been suggesting more this year as I stepped out of my comfort zone and am learning to #sketchnote with my Ss and trying to teach them :) #formativechat
A2 we are always looking to incorporatethe arts and creativity into process and product in my building! Our work with PBL has opened up so many options for showing mastery of information. #formativechat#ChampForKids
There’s power in collaboration as well as opportunities for developing interpersonal (SEL) skills as well...the arts have some magic to them! #formativechat
A3: I strongly believe in student self-expression. I allow students the options of showing their journey towards mastery in creative manners that they create. #formativechat
Hmmm... I'll read this. I'm skeptical. I'm a math teacher and would no way consider myself able to teach art. Unless the point is not to "teach" it but to facilitate students' learning it. I wouldn't be able to give them any feedback, though. #formativechat
Don’t know if these count as creative or fun, but they get kids thinking...which should be the goal:

A2: I do think that it would lend itself to more creative formative assessments. There would be more choice and freedom of expression---at least in ELA and history. #formativechat
A3: while not groundbreaking (and my littles don’t really know they’re being assessed) learning about their geometry skills by building creations with pattern blocks #formativechat
I agree, some students have designed dioramas, watercolor books and other visuals to present their #pbl love seeing their creativity and interests #formativechat

I remember last year, walking up to one of our 8th graders and seeing she had a sketchbook, I suggested that she drew her notes for history class. Her response: "I CAN DO THAT?" I smiled and asked, "Why not?" Ss need to realize there are many options out there. #formativechat
My formative assessments are pretty bland - direction convos, google form mastery checks...my summative assessments in my #pbl and #studentchoice units get some creative responses. #FormativeChat
A3: To build confidence Ss collaborate in teams on the multiple choice portion of the AP exam & SAT, by competing to answer questions, submit, review, then submit again. They have different supports they vote to remove so they are left ”without a leg to stand on.” #formativechat
A3: Conferring is the best formative assessment I know. Nothing beats engaging in meaningful dialogue with students and developing your relationships while also getting an in-depth view into their learning processes. #formativechathttps://t.co/sWLRNXxMiw
That's a great question. I personally haven't done this before. Maybe breaking up the creation of the art product into chunks so students need the core content to create each part? Not sure. #formativechat
A3: my students are creating maps of the school in our age of exploration unit! They will then need to lead a group of students using the map to find 💰 and 🌶! #FormativeChat
Love the conversation in #formativechat tonight! I have to head out to get my little on from gymnastics. I encourage everyone to join in the the #LearnLAP chat at 8! I hope to be back in time for the #TLAP chat at 9!
A3: Ss create @LEGO_Group stop motion movies to accompany “scripts” they’ve written. They create the scenery/backgrounds along with their brick creations! #FormativeChat#ArtsEd#LEGOlearning
I am trying my best, and also admitting when I am not that good at it, and that is okay, because I try and students actually encourage me :) #formativechat

A3: In my Greek mythology heroes unit, I have Ss create cartoon strips of the 12 labors of Heracles (Greek name, Hercules-Roman name). Cartoons must include 14 panels (birth, death, 12 labors), and emphasis is on info not art, but they create amazing cartoons! #formativechat
A3: No-stakes quizzes. Ironically, my students actually think they are fun! It allows for #retrievalpractice and allows me to give specific feedback to help students (They seem to enjoy this part too).
#formativechat
Nothing special - students draw the main concepts within the confines of a 2x2 inch square they draw in their notes. Then explain the connections between the drawing and the concepts #formativechat
we had used @RecapThat as well as @Flipgrid and students felt more comfortable and became more confident speaking in class, in their words #formativechat

A3: It was so much fun. kids created board games that allowed their peers to review content. Other Ss created @kahoot reviews. Fun for me and fun when their peers engaged,...#formativechat
I must say that having my students create their own formatives to express themselves have given me more authentic examples of assessments than I could ever collect from books... #formativechat
This is great! Many times formative assessment is unknown to the students! In the art room it’s kind of a mental note of how the Ss are progressing, who’s getting it, who’s needing help...not formal at all!! #formativechat
A3: while not groundbreaking (and my littles don’t really know they’re being assessed) learning about their geometry skills by building creations with pattern blocks #formativechat
A2: I think the arts are pioneers in formative assessment as the emphasis is on the process not the final product. This reflects in the #English#langnlit classroom by ensuring Ss know writing is a process- it takes time. This is an important mindset to foster. #formativechat
A3: I have an upcoming formative where students will create couplets in teams & then add them to an intro & ending couplet to create a class Ghazal on Twitter. It will assess if they understand the very basic structure, & they can be creative. #formativechat
#formativechat A3 I have the students take a "gallery" walk thru classroom giving peer feedback during in process creation so Ss can see their work thru the eyes of others - gets kids see work differently and inspiration strikes again @heARTISTatWORK
A3: I love using storyboarding in English. It really helps the students get a visual sense of the settings, characters, and perspectives. Sketchnotes are awesome, and anything that connects music and poetry. #formativechat

Well that wraps it up folks! Thank you @goformative and @Rdene915 for the opportunity to guest host! And all of you for dabbling in some creativity ideas with me! #formativechat
A3 Students chose one word (kindness, hope, positivity, growth, etc.) to work on for the year and drew or used digital images to bring that word to life. Now they are reminded of it daily as it hangs in our walls. #formativechat
#FormativeChat math teachers have Ss create rooms based on “scale” and they are amazing @gdslaff Science classes created artistic versions of creatures who would be the King of all animals. Different parts of aminmals were put together. Writing explained the whys.
I did, Ss loved it, and then my trial ran out. :) I'm in a small rural D, so I have to choose my subscriptions carefully. Went back to pencil and paper for storyboards/cartoon strips. #formativechat
Hi #formativechat friends! Patrick here from the Philippines, Director of the Learning Environments and Innovations Office of @MalayanLaguna. I also teach Senior High Biology and Earth Science.
Shout-out to @heARTISTatWORK for guest hosting tonight's discussion! There's a lot to be discovered and learned in exploring the relationship between the arts and #formative assessment and we love the way she unpackaged it with these Qs! #formativechat

A2: #formativechat Integrating art in SS is easy as history and cultures have been depicted with various perspectives in endless ways. Same can be said for ELA classes. Science / Math harder but may take a artist's mindset, a sense of creative thinking / problem solving.
#FormativeChat as a writing teacher, the one-to-one writing conferences are transformative for most Ss. When they trust you (relationships built from day one) and feel safe, they love the time together too!
