Hi everyone! I am Kaitlyn Smith and I am currently a sophomore majoring in elementary education at NC State in Raleigh, NC! I plan on teaching 2nd or 3rd grade! #dojochat#eci201
Hi everyone! I am Sarah Morse a NC State College of Education student! I plan to teacher K-2! I am excited to learn and make new connections tonight! #dojochat#eci201
Whats up Dojo Lovers? Welcome to #dojochat tonight! Excited to be your host this evening - first off let's get acquainted! Where are you coming at us live from and what grade / subject are you teaching? :)
Welcome everyone! :) Tonight we are chatting self care - don't forget our format as we begin! Q1/A1 and #dojochat in your answer! Let's get started with Q1 coming up!
A1: Although, I am not physically in the classroom yet, I feel as though teacher burnout is when you are not able to come up with new ideas or find any ways to engage the students in the classroom. #dojochat
A1: It looks like neverending exhaustion and for me it started when I fell into a rut and started doing the same thing year after operating on autopilot. Good thing I changed my direction #dojochat
A1: Although, I am not physically in the classroom yet, I feel as though teacher burnout is when you are not able to come up with new ideas or find any ways to engage the students in the classroom. #dojochat
A1 I always felt burnout when it was less about helping my students develop into awesome beings, and more about test scores for the district. #dojochat
A1: Though I personally haven't experienced this, I believe teacher burnout is when you have sort of a brain block and can not think of new ideas to incorporate into your lessons. It is when you are exhausted and are just tired of doing the same old thing. #dojochat
A1: Wanting to go home as you drive in. Lose heart. Lack effort to solve difficult situations. Next thing you know you won’t solve the simple ones. Find a groove & sit is until you’re almost dead inside. But you can recover! #dojochat
A1: Teacher burnout can happen when you don't enjoy what you are doing and teaching anymore. This then rubs off on students creating a negative effect on learning and its outcome in the classroom. #dojochat
Let me give a solution as a response... POSITIVE praise goes a LONG way. Having your admin stop in and take notice of the hard work you're doing goes a long way #dojochat
Working your rear off without results, or the result never being enough. In education, it will never be enough and some people can't handle that kind of stress. #DojoChat
A1: teacher burn out is exhausted teachers with no excitement for teaching anymore because they've lost it. We always need to be learning, growing, and changing things up for our students! #dojochat
A2 Don't take school home. It's hard to do, but it makes a world of difference! When I'm home, I want to enjoy MY time to watch TV, play stupid games on my phone, & hang w/ my husband. #DojoChat
A2 when I am home I try to present with my family and I go out of my way to enjoy all of my non-school hobbies like gaming and instructing martial arts. #dojochat
A2 QUIET HOURS! Put away all tech for a good portion of your time at home. Disconnect. Quiet hours on ClassDojo, no emails, no grading. Remember to love on your family, walk your dog, go for a run... you're a person and deserve real person stuff too #dojochat
A1: For Everyone it can be different but for me it’s imagining that I am swimming and just can’t get my head above water. Doing too much at one time is usually the cause #dojochat
A2: I will say balancing work and life takes time. I've been teaching 7 years and still don't have this totally figured out some weeks. But sometimes I just leave without getting everything done and fund myself so much happier when I spend time for myself. #dojochat
A2: Though I am not teaching yet, I feel it is sort of the same as being a student. For me the biggest thing is having a planner!! It allows me to keep track of what is going on in my "work" life and my "personal" life #dojochat

A2.2 My first year teacher I worked EVERY weekend. I wouldn't show affection to my boyfriend (now husband) in public for fear of running into a student, etc. Remember you're a person, and that's okay too, thank goodness for growth #dojochat
my students always love running into me outside of school because they find me in the most interesting places. I even had one show up at my martial arts school once #dojochat
A2: Trial and error. Sometimes I cut things at home & it doesn’t work. I have to question what I do for school. It’s more about maturing in having boundaries. Am I trying to serve a role larger than teacher. #dojochat
A3: I play with my dogs, take them for walks, take Zumba classes, read non education related books, play games, and hang out with my husband and our neighbors. #dojochat
A1: Burnout happens a lot when you don't take time for yourself. If you are constantly going and not seriously taking a break, burnout will come earlier than expected. #dojochat
A3 Allow myself to sit on the couch and cuddle my dog and not think about any real responsibilties, lol! Also, hikes, weekend outings with friends, reading a non-work related book nightly #dojochat
A3: I make sure to take some time for myself and to do some of the things I enjoy doing, whether that be spending time with friends or going on a run! #dojochat
A2: Balancing teaching with my personal life took a while to figure out especially my first few years of teaching. Prioritize times to do teaching work and then actually spend time with others or some time with @netflix and "juice"! 😉 #dojochat
I like to focus on the positives that are happening in my life, and not be clouded by the negative things that are occurring. I like to take time to relax and do things that I enjoy #dojochat
A4: Breathe... take 5 minutes for yourself on a recess break or at some point in the day, and just listen to music or do something to re-focus! #dojochat
A4: I like to focus on the positives that are happening in my life, and not be clouded by the negative things that are occurring. I like to take time to relax and do things that I enjoy #dojochat
A4 I remember I had a really bad day teaching day and my husband got me out of the house. Just took me for a boba tea and time at the beach with our dog. Remembering the world is big and beautiful and this is just ONE day. #dojochat
A4: honestly though after a rough day of teaching I usually stop at my favorite place to eat and get an amazing Italian beef sandwich and go to bed early #dojochat
A4: Breathe... take 5 minutes for yourself on a recess break or at some point in the day, and just listen to music or do something to re-focus! #dojochat
A4: We need to remember the reason why we decided to become educators: to make a positive impact on students and teach them! Remembering that helps me when I am having a rough day. Not only do we get to play with kids all day but we get to positively impact them!! #dojochat
I also think its important to reflect on what sent the day sideways and consider if there was anything I could have done differently or if the issue was out of my hands. #dojochat
First, possibly cry! (We're all human!) Then, get a good cardio workout to get out all of my anger and frustration. I also meditate and reflect on why it was a rough teaching day and how it could be improved to never happen again! #dojochat
A4.2 if I'm still with the kiddos I often ask "can we just reset?" We all dance or shake it off for a minute, I ask someone to tell a joke, and we re-enter the room, start the day over! #dojochat

A4: Connect with my teacher friends. After school you can always find 3 or 4 of us on the school deck or together in a classroom— it’s the best. I also love talking through my day with hubby @ldillon33. #dojochat
A5 look at what time I have left in the year, plan some fun projects, maybe even a field trip. Give myself and students some fun learnings to look forward to #dojochat
A5: 1st I acknowledge that I'm bored and try to think of something fun and different I can do with my class. I work with some great people who are really creative and fun. #dojochat
A5: Support - you need to have a team of support both inside and outside of school! Without collaboration, sharing, and more it's a tough job to do! With a support network it makes teaching life much easier! #dojochat
A5 Plan your days with fun activities. If the kids stay busy it makes everything much easier. Also, Friday afternoon happy hours with your teacher friends don't hurt. Or so I'm told... ;-) #DojoChat
A5: Remember the sole reason you became a teacher: to make a difference. The difference might be small to you but very impact to the students. It will be hard, but always remember you're not alone and many teachers went through it as well! #dojochat
A5: Great question! With twitter I always have fresh and new ideas from my #PLN. And I always have a 20 day balloon pop countdown to the end of the school year. Each day a special activity. #dojochat

A5: I think switching things up or adding something new and exciting into the lesson can help both the students and the teacher reach the end of the year! Maybe add some field trips or fun (and maybe even gross) science experiments! #dojochat

Q5: I put fun activities every week for me and for the students to look forward to. I also put my teaching into perspective and remember why I am teaching. #dojochat

A5: Projects. Maker sessions. Learn to make something new. Learn a new tech. Make an App on AI2 or Thunkable. Gonna dove into https://t.co/c09CgUnu4L - my Ss area head of me. #dojochat
Alright Dojo-ers - Q6: Let's make a resolution to end the year well (or in my case kick off the school year well) - What can you do tonight after #dojochat to help take better care of YOU! :) Bonus if you tweet evidence that you followed up!

A6: As I am living in a college dorm currently, there is no such thing as "Quiet hours." Therefore, I will be listening to music, catching up on a book and relaxing before my 8:30 tomorrow morning! Fun times! #dojochat
A6 After #DojoChat I'm going to watch Celebrity Big Brother and catch up on my Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Ridiculous reality shows make me feel better about my life! :-)
A6 Tonight I will make myself tea and read my book before bed. This year I will be better with my time and remember that it's okay to LOVE work, put everything into it, and still enjoy my time off too 😉 #dojochat
A6: my hubs bought me at @fitbit for Christmas. I’m tracking my sleep and set a goal for 6.5 hours or more per night. (Typically I sleep 4-5 hrs.) I’ll be intentional about going to bed earlier! Promise! #dojochat

A6: I will balance my plate - I will not take on too many things and make life chaotic, I will however take on more of a social life as that always gets pushed to the back burner! #dojochat

A6: Really take time for myself and schedule school work, grad school work, and family time. Good luck @MissAinChile with the start of a new school year! #dojochat
Another question coming at ya! Q7: Does your school district have any teacher self-care or mindfulness policies? If not, what are some you think could be beneficial? #dojochat
Another question coming at ya! Q7: Does your school district have any teacher self-care or mindfulness policies? If not, what are some you think could be beneficial? #dojochat
A7: We did have a self-care workshop this year - it was nice to check in like we are now and bounce ideas off one another... it would be great to have mental health days incorporated! Just a thought haha! #dojochat
A7: We provide clubs & tutoring days after school until 4:15 (charter school) one day a week we get a stress relief and can leave at 3:15. That's the day I can do me things. I never stay past my stress relief time. It's important I give myself that break. #dojochat
A7, no policies that I was aware of. But would love for the district to encourage it. We did however arrange our own #selfcare. A few teachers would get together twice a week to workout, we even hired a trainer! #dojochat
A7 I don't know if my district has any self-care policies in place and in all honesty I don't know where to start. One thing my district does that I really like is that our "sick" days are called annual leave and we can use them at our discretion #dojochat
Oh I take it back, there was a newsletter LOL! I forgot about that. You could get gift cards for "caught in the act" but was mostly about safety (not climbing a ladder without someone there, etc.) #dojochat
A7: I think it's important for schools to have workshops on subjects like self care! We have to make sure our teachers are the best them so that they can teach the best!! #dojochat
A7: The school nurse would send weekly emails on how to destress and stay healthy. We did have the yoga teacher do a PD on how to destress and it was super beneficial. #dojochat
A7: My school usually holds a couple of wellness “trainings” each year and they are v helpful. I have also found them to be incredibly supportive of T health/well-being/etc... #dojochat
OMG I wish! I do my work every Saturday morning. Funny thing....I can't concentrate during my prep haha don't tell my Ss! I often use the time to catch up on emails, write ideas down, then socialize w the office staff or other Ts on prep 😅 #alwaysofftask#dojochat
A7: joing late.... but YES!!!! We have a district health and wellness program and school committees. We are rewarded with “chip currency” to purchase gift cards. Team health challenges are sponsered by the district and an annual district award is given! #dojochat
Another question coming at ya! Q7: Does your school district have any teacher self-care or mindfulness policies? If not, what are some you think could be beneficial? #dojochat
A8: Respecting teaching hours! Don't start earlier or end later than you have to! And make sure parents respect your time and hours too! Its hard setting limits with parents! #dojochat
A8: I want to make sure I don't overwork myself and I always have time allotted to relax and take deep breathes. I want to balance my work life with my personal life when it comes to stress and be equipped to handle anything! #dojochat
A8: Limiting myself on how much time I spend on @Pinterest and working on lesson planning. 🙈 Also, not focusing too much on others' classrooms and envying them. #dojochat

A9 @mylifeasatechie is my BFF in all aspects. We've worked together for 13 years and support each other in EVERYTHING we do - which is usually done together. We're kind of a package deal... #DojoChat
A9: I am supported as an educator by all of my past teachers, mentors, family, friends and current teachers such as @bethanyvsmith and @RebekahSDavis who encourage/teach future educators to implement technology in the classroom! #eci201#dojochat
A9 shout out to my Principal and admin assistant. They are the dynamic duo for the staff and Ss;willing to roll up their sleeves at any time , able to create a matrix for any situation. Teamwork makes the dreamwork #dojochat
A9: My husband, @rican_90, because he sees how much I put in to being a teacher and working on my M.Ed. Also, seeing me in action and knowing that he could never teach students because it's a lot harder than it looks. 😀 #dojochat
Dojo Lovers! It's been a lovely time with you all, thank you SO much for an amazing #dojochat! I can't wait to host again with you all! Don't forget - self care is important, you matter and make sure you take time to take care of YOURSELF - It's all about that BALANCE! #dojochat
